    Ruffalo

    by clupula

They might as well have gotten Louis CK, for how much of a step down that is from Norton.

  • July 24, 2010, 9:47 p.m. CST

    I like it

    by JerryAurora

    This film will rock

  • July 24, 2010, 9:48 p.m. CST

    lol, Hawkeye

    by OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUUTTTTTLLLLLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWW

    How embarrassing.

  • July 24, 2010, 9:48 p.m. CST

    I'd go for Louie

    by cookylamoo

There's a lot of repressed anger there.

  • July 24, 2010, 9:50 p.m. CST

    re: Ruffalo

    by JerryAurora

I actually think his casting could work. And, Banner himself will not be in the film all that much anyway. I really liked Norton in the role too, but he brought it on himself.

  • July 24, 2010, 9:50 p.m. CST

I've liked Ruffalo after watching him ....

    by Ozman X

On "Eternal Sunshine" talking about The Clash. sometimes little things make me a fan of certain actors.

    HAWKEYE RULES

    by Br0ken_Finger

    OOUUTTLLAAWW is a giant dick.

  • July 24, 2010, 9:51 p.m. CST

    Bring back Edward Norton!

    by Yelsaeb

Ah, what's the use? Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye FTW!

  • July 24, 2010, 9:51 p.m. CST

    Yeah Ruffalo????

    by Annie The Pod Racer

Why not Balthazar Getty, a much better portrayal.

  • July 24, 2010, 9:52 p.m. CST

    Did they cast Wasp yet?

    by Shermdawg

    Wasn't Eva Longoria approached?

  • July 24, 2010, 9:52 p.m. CST

    Also:

    by Br0ken_Finger

Ruffalo is awesome. Ed Norton is cool, too, but wants too much control for this kind of ensemble piece. I hate to see Norton go, but this makes sense.

  • July 24, 2010, 9:53 p.m. CST

    lol, Bow and Arrow

    by OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUUTTTTTLLLLLAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWWWWW

    Thor gotta flop

    by Human_Bean_Juice_

Just got that feeling. Would love to see one more great role for Hopkins though before he kicks the bucket.

  • July 24, 2010, 9:55 p.m. CST

    Assemble this

    by Star Hump

Iron Man<p> Thor<p> Captain America<p> Hulk (likely the antagonist in this)<p> Hawkeye<p> Black Widow ? <p> Nick Fury (SHIELD liason?)<p> Is that the team then? No Hank Pym huh? Pym never gets a break, not since Jim Shooter turned him into a wife beater. It's a fuckin shame.

  • July 24, 2010, 9:58 p.m. CST

    Star Hump

    by Br0ken_Finger

The only thing Jim Shooter turned was Marvel into a bad joke. Hank Pym was a sexist dick from the get go, but I think it was Roger Stern who made Pym violent.

Huge Huge egos in this movie

    by RPLocke

I'd hate to be the caterer.

  • July 24, 2010, 9:59 p.m. CST

    See, you underestimate Hawkeye there...

    by Fuzzyjefe

this is a guy who cleared a room with fingernail clippings. He's deadly with just about ANY sort of projectile. <p> Especially if they're going more 'ultimate' version. He is a black-ops bad-ass.

  • July 24, 2010, 10 p.m. CST

    Sounds good to me.

    by MarionRavenwood

Ruffalo is sufficiently nerdy. I've never been one of those people who thinks that people have to match the precise physical type of the drawn character. As long as they capture the spirit, that's good enough. In fact, I'd like to see a more doughy Banner just to emphasize the drastic difference.

  • July 24, 2010, 10 p.m. CST

The huge egos is what the Avengers are all about

    by terry1978

Having a bunch of top actors who are each playing a character that doesn't really work well with others is probably the best typecasting you could do.

  • July 24, 2010, 10:01 p.m. CST

    P.S.

    by MarionRavenwood

Every time I see a post with the word "ego" in it, I think of that old Conan O'Brien sketch, "Famous Helping People" where Andy accidentally writes, "Check your Eggos at the door." They should post that sign on set.

  • July 24, 2010, 10:02 p.m. CST

so long as they recast him again

    by GavinVanDraven

in the incredible hulk 2 and again in the avengers 2, so that its like this running gag.... Tony Stark:"Banner, i know you're on the run from the government and all, but all this plastic surgery doesn't help, you still turn into Shrek on roids whenever you get pissed. oh, fuck! RUUUUUUUUUUN!!!!!"

  • July 24, 2010, 10:02 p.m. CST

Good choice there. I like it.

  • July 24, 2010, 10:08 p.m. CST

One villain for all those guys? Or some kind of team-up? Ultron? Kang? The Stranger?

  • July 24, 2010, 10:39 p.m. CST

A full video will be up by tonight I bet.

    by buffywrestling

But here's what Joss said: <p> I had a dream, and it was NOT THIS GOOD. These are The Avengers. My dream team! A team more than the sum of it's parts! More than I could ever dream of working with. I'm going to blow it, I'm not up to it, I'm very nervous...I need your love and your support (applause) thank you, I feel better. We're done, take care, see you soon!

  • July 24, 2010, 10:39 p.m. CST

Snipes goes to jail while corporate execs are free?

    by kevred

I bet there are at least 1000 corporate execs in this country, if not ten times that number, who've evaded more taxes than Snipes owed in his entire life. BP commits mass ecological murder and barely gets a furrowed brow by our feeble government. Meanwhile, street-level drug users get more jail time than anyone mentioned above. Justice is a subjective joke in this country.<p>Just saying.

  • July 24, 2010, 10:41 p.m. CST

    by JerryAurora

I dutifully retract my prior statement. Ejofer would a much better choice for T'challa and White is perfect for Cage.

  • July 24, 2010, 10:42 p.m. CST

So, again, who are they going to fight?

    by kevred

Any leads? Ultron? Kang? IMDB has Loki in the cast list, but would they really re-use him as the main baddie? Who can be a serious enough villain to take on The Avengers? Or will it all be a catch-the-Hulk chase, like the first issue of the original comic?

  • July 24, 2010, 10:42 p.m. CST

Have to agree about Snipes especially where BP is concern!

Origin: Nick Fury is going them together

    by leo54304

to deal with a threat. I mean the movies have been mentioning the avengers initative right? For villains Ultron is out as Thor fought the destroyer (repetition), Loki out (?) just gut feeling, same with Kang. Question is if Fury knew about Thors hammer must know about gods existing right? How does he know that? Just asking. Think there is some sort of invasion coming and Fury is gathering a strike force. Feeling is alien and my bet is either Kree (easy to do-human looking) or going on a stretch: THANOS. Remember howlife like the orcs were? Could do the same with him. Plus by having an army to fight, the weaker avengers will have something to do.

kevred, it is what it be: Ya' gotta pay your taxes

    by Amadeo Zeller

Snipes is old enough to realize, his feignin' ignorance of this country's tax laws just doesn't fly<p> Is it unfair that the McCort's (The L.A. Dodgers owners) can get away from paying taxes by way of some loophole? Yes! - But, they're part of the RICH WRINKLY OLD WHITE FOLKS elite, thus (most times) the rules don't apply to them. <p> In retrospect, Snipes should've done his bid when first sentenced, he would've been free to work out a payment settlement by shooting a few straight to dvd "B" movies.

  • July 24, 2010, 10:59 p.m. CST

  • July 24, 2010, 11:21 p.m. CST

    Cast group photo looks great

    by kevred

Looks like a group that will be a lot of fun to watch - easy to imagine the chemistry from the old comics with this bunch.<p>That said, as attractive as Johannson is, it's hard to not think it'll just be wasted screen time with her. She was out of place enough in a superhero film that just had one superhero; what role will she possibly have in a film stuffed full of them? And please, please don't tell me that she'll be the one to figure everything out and save the day while all the big, tough, men are rendered helpless. That cliche would drive me nuts, as it's always a pseudo-feminist pseudo-statement. Show respect to the female character by giving her her own film. Otherwise, your respect is fake.

    Zeller, re: White

    by kevred

I think White would make a fine choice. Personally, I find Crews to look a lot more like Cage. Also, I recall Cage to be more of a brawler, which would reduce the benefit of White's martial-arts background. Crews's American Gladiator stint might be more fitting for a Hollywood film. :) But I think either would do a great job.

  • July 24, 2010, 11:29 p.m. CST

    SpyGuy, I hope you're wrong

    by kevred

But history indicates you may be right. If all the guys in the film are turned into bickering, impotent stumblebums, I will demand a refund from Whedon himself. Hopefully he's not stupid enough to emasculate 4 different franchises all at once.

Hulk ehhh, think he's safe but might have him quit team at end of movie. Hawkeye? everyone like this choice so he's safe. Who's left? Oh yeah whatshername Scarlett Something right? Toast. 70's Cage movie

    by JerryAurora

I mentioned Black Dynamite earlier, and that is pretty damn close in my mind. Dude used his nunchuks on Richard effin Nixon. Luke Cage would have been down for that.

star. Was tempted to say something else but thought better. Yeah, if Hanks in, he better have his insurance paid up. Actually in a parallel universe Hank did die in the teams origin and they took the name avengers in his memory. The wasp changed her name to black widow and became a pretty cold blooded gal. Great concept.

Have to get that movie Jerry, Playboy loved it

And too bad Jackson and Johanssen were not good in IM2

Thats what frightens me most at this point. Especially how terrible Jackson was play Fury as Jackson.

Have to agree Industry but everyone in IM2 sucked!

    Jackson is getting worse

    by leo54304

First IM ok, cool but those other cameos just terrible. Deadon observation industry. I read the Nick Fury secret warriors and he is no Fury. Granted they're using the ultimates version (I think) but wheres the fire, the warrior that is Fury. Nick would never say "Tony Stark I'v got my eye on you". What a waste of a character.

IndustryKiller! - In Whedon, you should TRUST!

    by Amadeo Zeller

Whedon didn't write the script to IM2. <p> Whedon along with Tarantino, are recognized as some of the most capable script doctors in the business...That's why Whedon is currently beefing up Zac's original script and is also tweeking Captain America's script.

    Good choices...

    by WeylandYutani

but it would have been nice to get Bana or Norton back for character consistency. Oh well. <P> Marvel's lawyers must be pulling their hair hour trying to get the contracts for this in order. Big ensemble films sound like a legal nightmare to me... I remember reading when they were making the Towering Inferno, Newman and McQueen had major issues with the number of lines each actor had and were constantly trying to one-up each other. It would not surprise me if the same thing happened with The Avengers.

  • July 25, 2010, 12:10 a.m. CST

    Why was Norton dropped?

    by cgih8r

Was it like the Terrence Howard thing where he wanted more than they were ready to give? If it's about cutting costs then it's understandable. If they throw too much money at the all star cast they will have little money left over to make it into the epic it needs to be. It needs to have 10 times more action than Iron Man 2 and better quality special effects. Iron Man 2's special effects were like a 6 out of 10. I'd like to see this having 8/10 quality with better story and pacing. The next thing I want to know is the budget cuz it's going to have to be pretty huge to make this work.

If movie does well but Hulk, widow get bad reviews

    by leo54304

I'd drop them and put she hulk in. Origin explained onscreen:Banner gave his cousin a blood transfusion and you know the rest. Widow is on assignment and unavailable. Plus wth she hulk not a CGI creation so you can do more with her character.

I doubted. With the exception of RDJ, the rest of the stars doesn't have the B.O. pull to pull a DIVA-LIKE move. <p> Norton, on the otherhand, is just all EGO with little to no B.O. pull to justify putting up with his antics.

Zeller, I was actually thinking of 70s Cage too :)

    by kevred

So we must just have different mental images of what would be ideal for the guy. If it means actually getting a film off the ground, I'd be happy with either guy in the role!<p>I don't even know what the current version of Cage is like, and as much as I love his original incarnation, I don't care! The rawness, looseness, and working-man vibe of the original was great. The whole concept of "hero for hire" was a great contrast to the marquee heroes, though it probably resulted in Cage never quite getting his due within the Marvel universe. But done right, it could end up being the Marvel film with the most substance and depth.

    by leo54304

when he's walking the NYC streets on a cold day and the shaft theme is playing. The scene is shown from a rooftop angle showing the beat of 70s NYC. Just a great vibe and why a guy like Cage would be in natural habitat. As you mentioned kevred it was that rawness of a working class african american that the comic audience was ready for and marvel wasnt willing to really get behind. Although in the defenders he fit in well. Course they were the perfect 70s team for him. No establishment heroes or govt ties. Defenders vol 3 reprint worth getting. Great writing and art. So, of course, they used volunteers from prison as their guinea pigs.<p>The racist guard found Cage in the middle of the experiment and turned all the dials up to 11 to kill him, but instead, it just made him super-strong and bulletproof. Just wanted to second the opinion that Kurt Russell as Fury would be a fantastic idea. I mean, for continuity's sake, you'd probably want to keep Jackson--after all, he is nice in his role as Ultimates Fury--but if a change was required, Kurt Russell would be a dream come true. The world needs more Kurt Russell. Hell, even his role in Disney's Sky High kicked ass.

Russell is a lot like Jeff Bridges

    by leo54304

always put in quality work even in crap. Once Kurt got away from teaming with Goldie Hawn, he started being in decent stuff. Both Russell and Bridges made movies in the 70s and early 80s that were really good but then they hit a rough patch. Understandable in hollywood as to keep a high profile gotta take some crappy roles in crappy movies. Just nature of the beast. But Kurt still has that dont fuck with me vibe that he can kick in when he wants. Good guy, good actor.

    Norton

    by Rustle

I'm in the camp that wanted to see Norton continue as Banner. For me, the recasting does sour the project a bit.

    Loved Norton

    by enderandrew

I wasn't impressed with the trailers for either Hulk film, because a very fake CGI hulk smashing things never did it for me. But Norton was great as Bruce Banner. I really enjoyed his take. They told him he'd have story input, didn't credit him, and changed things on him at the last second and everyone says he doesn't have a right to be upset.<p>I contend he is one of the five finest actors working on the planet. Mark Ruffalo is exceedingly boring for a role that requires a lot of subtext. This move is insipid to say the least.

    HollywoodHellraiser

    by enderandrew

Don't forget that Marvel was initially refusing to pay Sam Jackson and supposedly low-balled everyone on Iron Man 2. So I'm sure this has absolutely nothing to do with several big names in one movie and the checks Marvel would have to write.<p>Except Branaugh also wanted to cast Alan Cumming and both Sarsgaards, and Marvel went cheap there as well. And for Captain American, Marvel went cheap there.<p>Again, I'm sure this has absolutely nothing to do with money.<p>You may also note they haven't hired a single expensive director either.<p>Again, I'm sure this has absolutely nothing to do with money.

Does anyone actually believe for a second...

    by Peter Franks

that Terrence Howard is a better actor than Don Cheadle? If so, please have your fucking head examined immediately. Kudos to Marvel for the Ruffalo casting as well. Well done, boys.

Mark Ruffalo's destiny is Lt. Columbo

    by Carl's hat

Much as I love Falk and the way he made Columbo, the torch will be passed. It is inevitable.

Muck Farvel. It's Norton or nothin'.

    by Timstuff

Let's see how long Rufallo lasts. Marvel had a multi-movie deal with Norton, too, and they still found a way to get out of it. Best of luck to Rufallo. I hope he enjoys being the next one-and-done in a long line of Hulk actors who Marvel chewed up and spat out.

  • July 25, 2010, 3:55 p.m. CST

I love Ed Norton as much as the next guy...

    by Peter Franks

but let's move the fuck on, shall we? As great an actor as he is, the man is a notoriously difficult actor to work with and that's certainly not what's needed in such an ensemble cast. It looks to me that Marvel made lemonade from lemons with the Ruffalo casting. Nuff' said.

  • July 25, 2010, 4:15 p.m. CST

    "Ruffalo, nuanced and subtle."

    by TakingScorpiosCalls

nuanced and subtle=snooze inducing boring no matter how you cut it. sorry but the most entertaining people like tony montana from scarface, tuco in GBU, william shatner in everything are the most talked about, no one gives two shits about anything else, but the more subtle performances at least have some guns packing like harry callahan weidling the biggest handgun in the world or arnold schwarzenegger falling out of an airplane and landing safely.

  • July 25, 2010, 10:19 p.m. CST

    Seriously - Mark Ruffalo?

That is some godawful casting, Marvel.

Ruffalo does meek and understated fine, he'll do good as Banner.

i wonder who will play banner in avengers 2?

    by TheManWhoCan

seeing as these "multi picture deals" arn't worth the arse paper there printed on!<p> Rodney was replaced <br> Banner now replaced <br> Downeys getting bored and will probably split after next movie.<br> Sam jackson is the only one that will hang around, dispite all his talk a while back, he HAS to keep making movies ,otherwise he'll end up back on the smack!

  • July 26, 2010, 9:27 a.m. CST

    I'll reserve my judgement

    by templar

until the movie comes out. Am I bumbed that Norton isn't the Hulk, sure, but Ruffalo can't be all that bad. He was good in Zodiac. His been in other good movies, so I'll wait and see and reserve my judgement. Though it would've been nice to have Norton in the role

  • July 26, 2010, 9:33 a.m. CST

I read that Norton was difficult to work with

    by templar

I'm not defending Marvel, I'm sure they make dickheaded decisions like the rest of the studios..coughspittle FOXphlegm. but I'll give the guy the benefit of the doubt.

  • July 26, 2010, 11:29 a.m. CST

Somebody above came up with a great idea...

    by Orbots Commander

Recast Banner in every single movie. It would be this great running gag in any future Hulk and Avengers movies. In the Hulk 3/reboot-sort-of-sequel, I say they get Doogie Howser. After that, Tom Cruise.
