RED Sure Does Look Cool...

Published at:  Jul 23, 2010 10:06:50 AM CDT

Merrick here...

A new trailer for RED has gone online. Helen Mirren, Bruce Willis, Morgan Freeman, John Malkovich, Richard Dreyfuss, Karl Urban, Mary Louise Parker, and (!?!?) Ernest Borgnine and James Remar (!?!?)

Bruce getting out of that cop car...is the coolest, OTT manly-man thing I've seen on-screen in quite a while - although I think the gag would work a bit better without the slow-mo.

WATCH IT HERE!!!

Remar, by the way, was originally cast as Hicks in ALIENS and was subsequently replaced by Michael Biehn.

The film is based on the Warren Ellis/Cully Hamner graphic novel of the same name (available HERE).

Yes, this should've been posted yesterday. It wasn't, but now it is. And it's awesome. So there.

Karl Urban should definitely head up a cast for an upcoming action flick. Maybe they'll give him a role in a Marvel film. He would've been an awesome Bruce Banner

Helen Mirren shooting automatic weapons, however, now that's cool! And it's good to see Malkovitch showing his funny bone more often, he's a natural for comedy. "You are a mormon, for you everybody has a drinking problem".

    by james_camera_on

I'm sure Morgan Freeman plays God in some form. He always does. The only interesting thing here is Borgnine. I thought he died years ago. It would be cool if he was in bed with Helen Mirren and pulled the covers over them both and farted. Other than that, not interested.

Strays Far from Source Material (which is a good thing)

    by oneiros71

First trailer piqued my interest, so I picked up the graphic novel it's based on. The book is about a single retired agent marked for death and is far far far from a comedy. The book is very typical (though rather light weight) Warren Ellis fare. The movie obviously takes the title and very basic concept of the book and then goes in an entirely different direction with it. Based on the trailer alone the film is much more realized than the book which inspired it.

This second trailer killed my enthusiasm DEAD.

    by subtitles_off

You know how there all always knobs who insist - as if they know for an absolute certainty - that there are elements of comic books that will not translate to movies? They're always talking about spandex costumes and giant props - two of the things that SHOULD translate to film, if only the brilliant Auteurs making these films knew how.

The two things that DON'T translate well from comic books are in every, single, fukken, comic-based movie: Glowing, sparking, pulsating, colorful energy orbs and physics-defying "wow" moments. That crappy, Zack-Snyderish, "look how cool I am!" sh!t!

Like, leaping out of a spinning car and skipping past the bumper while shooting your automatic weapon. Or, a slow-motion bullet meeting a missile, just right, to detonate it in mid-air.

    Stupid.

A cast of great actors (Ernest Borgnine!!!) instead of mush-mouthed, muscle-bound ex-wrestlers and 80s action dopes? Check.

    A fun, silly premise? Check.

A young-punk director with his head up his ass? You betcha.
