Info on the GALAXY QUEST market research being conducted in Chicago.
FATHER GEEK here with a report on one of those Test Marketing schemes being currently conducted in the Chicago area. The "Chicago Seven" give us a pretty detailed look at what these things are like and in the process we get a really cooool glimpse at the up coming Sci-Fi-Treklike spoof GALAXY QUEST...
Dear Harry,
Welcome to my home town. I'm glad we have some nice weather for your
stay here.
Yesterday (10/25/99), I was stopped by a research company in a north
suburban shopping mall that asked me to view a trailer for the upcoming
movie "Galaxy Quest" to get my impressions. I was led into a small room
and shown the brief video three times. This particular clip was labeled
"Abduction" and had Dream Works printed on the opening frame which also
showed a CGI animated ant crawling from screen left to right. It also
identified the announcer/narrator, but unfortunately, I can't remember
his name. The quality of the following film/video was poor and obviously
not finished. Tim Allen had most of the screen time as he portrays a TV
sci-fi actor, who is mistaken for a real space captain by aliens. He and
some of the TV cast are kidnapped and forced into a real life space
adventure.
Though I saw the tape three times, the individual cuts went
by rather quickly. I can remember the following cuts as an announcer
explains the films premise:
Allen sitting in a captains chair (obviously modeled on a Star Trek
bridge set), looking appropriately smug and pompous while grunting to
himself.
Human looking aliens with balding foreheads and dark hair combed back,
looking for and identifying Allen and cast as the ones they wanted.
An effects shot of Allen, in black and white, being sucked through space
in a kind of worm hole.
Allen and a cute young blonde running through hallways while explosions
and flames erupted.
Father Geek note: Her Cuteness is indeed Sigourney Weaver!
A nice effects shot of a large alien space ship (which reminded me of a
Romulan ship).
Some alien goo exploding, which covers the faces of several actors and
aliens.
Allen running away from a CGI rock monster, while speaking into a
communicator like device.
Several cast members fooling around with blaster guns and trying to look
cool as they walk through a corridor.
The blonde (from the earlier cut) looking at some cute, green, round
headed CGI aliens. She approaches saying "Aren't they cute?!" when
suddenly their mouths open, revealing long sharp teeth.
The overall effect of the trailer was funny/ interesting, but a few of
the jokes (the exploding goo) seemed hokey. The effects and CGI looked
really good, with exception of the worm hole effect. The clip identified
Tim Allen and Sigourney Weaver, but when the announcer said Weaver's
name they showed the blond I mentioned previously. The quality of the
video was not the best, as I said, but it didn't look a thing like
Weaver. Cards handed out with the viewing also mentioned Alan Rickman as
a star, but I didn't recognize him in any of the shots.

Another Father Geek note: Rickman is the Spock-like all knowing goodguy alien assistant to Tim Allen.

Nice idea if it's done well. Tim Allen though.... Oh yeah, speaking of STAR TREK, FREE ENTERPRISE makes it's way to VHS and DVD next week. woo-hoo
-
I once shared this scooper's amazement at Sigourney. Like Father Geek said, that hot little blonde really is Ripley. She was barely recognisable. She just looked so ... young. They had some pictures a while ago somewhere, and I just couldn't believe that it was her. But I'm looking forward to this film. I normally hate Tim Allen, but he seems perfect casting for a Shatner clone. ***** www.homestead.com/vertigofilms/

it's been how many years after the runaway success of MIB and we're STILL waiting for a decent version of hitchiker's guide to the galaxy? last i heard, douglas was working closely with disney to produce an actually GOOD version, but that was at least a year ago, if not more. why do we have to suffer through tim allen crap while the last thoughts of the falling whale are yet to be immortalized on the big screen (er, excepting that other version, of course)? "life. don't talk to me about life."
-
My hesitation about Tim Allen is that it seems everything he's done in the movies seems to be feel good fluffy family movies where the depth of the humor is usually a guy getting hit in the groin. Hopefully, this will be a step up. The concept is pretty cool and there are limitless things you can do with it. It's a good idea. Let's just hope they made a good movie of it.

Good God, this has to be the most over-used funny/scary line in the history of film. A pretty woman walks up to a cute-looking creature, says "Aren't they cute?!" and then nearly gets her hand bitten off by the tremendous jaws that appear on the alien/mutant/cub/monster. I am so sick of seeing this. I suppose it is a sign of yet another wholly original Tim Allen movie. Get ready for another insufferable load of "Tool Time" references and blunt-object-to-the-groin jokes. (P.S. If anyone is able to come up with an exact number of how many times the above line of dialouge has been spoken, please write in. I'm dying to know.)

Come on Eppy, you have to admit that the BBC version of "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" is pretty damn good, in a low production value "Dr. Who" type of way. It's very good at expressing the insanity, hilarity, and stupidity of the books (which expressed the insanity, hilarity, and stupidity of the original radio show). Of course, knowing Douglas Adams current distaste for the HHGttG universe, we'll be lucky if he ever even mentions the characters again, much less allows a movie to be made about them. Until then, we'll be stuck with derivative crapfests starring Tim Allen (who should not be allowed in a studio again ((with the notable exception of Toy Story)), under penalty of having to watch Jungle 2 Jungle for eternity...or even just once.). -Loki

I read this script almost a year ago when it was submitted to another film company I used to read for. All I can say is that I thought the script had lots of promise, and it really played up the washed-up loser/actors making ends meet at conventions. It did this humourously and effectively, while still maintaining affection for con folks. There were some really funny laughs and bits resulting throughout. My main concern was that no one would invest $$$$$ for really good effects on a comedic satire, but it seems as though the effects are great. Now the only hurtle will be whether or not the script was sharpened to be truly hysterical throughout, or whether it will lean more towards occasionally sluggish family fare.
-
And in any event, Rickman will be hysterical to watch as the washed-up, alcoholic Olivier-esque British actor who's career bit the big one after playing the Spock-inspired lizard-like intelligence officer, and who has been cynically hating life ever since. Between this and Dogma, Rickman should be enjoying his holiday season this year . . .

There is a Galaxy Quest web site with some pics (including a nice one of Ripley, err Sigorney). Can't tell if it is real of one of those bogus fan sites the studios have started creating. www.galaxyquest.com

Besides going blonde for Galaxy Quest..by now you all have noticed she now has breasts!...Look up at and SW shrine site the topless stills of her from one of the biggest bombs of all time "Half Moon Street"..shots of her riding a excersize bike topless (I am not making this up!)..SHE HAS IMPLANTS NOW! as proven by the stills I just mentioned, she used to be one of the flatest chested acresses..She still is the most untalented , over rated of them all. If she is reading this she can go to hell..
