Holy crap! Check out these awesome Thor and Captain America concept pieces!!!

Published at:  Jul 20, 2010 8:16:06 PM CDT

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I just checked into my hotel in San Diego and when I plugged in I saw some cool-ass stuff hit the nets while I was traveling.

Yahoo has some awesome concept art images from Marvel's two big upcoming franchise pictures: Thor and Captain America. Both are drool-worthy (God, I love concept art), but pay particularly close attention to the Captain America image. If the movie is half as cool as that concept piece then we're in for some greatness.

Be sure to click on either picture to visit Yahoo and see the super big versions!

    Comic Con Footage

Will this be the year where we finally have the studios OFFICIALLY release the footage they show to the rest of the world post-premiere? Probably not, but a great thought. I'll be the first on You Tube Sunday morning praying for the bootlegs.

to mention that Captain America has a pistol? Is it so he can shoot people in the legs and arms repeatedly, or is he going to be a killer? It's kind of a big change. The first Cap image ever was Cap PUNCHING Hitler in the face, not shooting him in the face. The shield is both defensive and offensive, plus Cap's super powered physique allowed him to be a way better living weapon than the guns carried by all the un-super-soldiers around him. Also both of these heros should have wings on their heads. GIANT SQUID!!!

All you guys whining about no wings, give it up. I think it's fine. Would you trust a guy in a war if he had a couple of fairy wings on his head? No. Seriously tho, this is the WWII Cap, here. Who knows what the Avengers costume will be like, and you know they will update it. As well as Iron Man's armor, and the Hulk, and Probably Thor as well. So in time those bitching about no wings, will be bitching about how the wings aren't right when they do get them.

    Hmm, gun or no gun?

    by rabidfnark

The current Cap (Bucky) carries one and it works okay, so it doesn't surprise me that they gave him one here. I also suppose it's a bit more realistic for him to carry a gun... I mean, he is a soldier in a war (at least it's not a machine gun). As for for whether or not it is appropriate for the character... well, Captain America has undergone a myriad changes over the years (the gun being only a small one). Steve Rogers has used firearms before (albeit not with any regularity) and (Post 9/11) had even come to the realization that a soldier is sometimes required to kill to protect his country. I'd have to say that, as long as it remains holstered it's absolutely vital to his or someone else's survival (and Cap remains more regular Marvel than Ultimates), then I'm personally okay with it. I can only speak for myself though, so have at it.

He punched Hitler BEFORE the US Entered WWII. I believe it is still one of his biggest regrets, not shooting the fucker.

...I just can't believe that some kind of stylized/streamlined wing, or a wing image painted on the side of the helmet, wouldn't work.It wouldn't have to be the little sticking-out wing from the comic; something painted on would look just fine - think of the designs painted on fighter planes of the day, or on the sides of motorcycle helmets. I can't imagine it'd look more out of place than everything else in the Cap costume. It seems like such an arbitrary thing to omit.

I don't know. I'm willing to give Johnston the benefit of the doubt. Chris Evans is great casting. I loved HONEY I SHRUNK THE KIDS when I was little. Also he gave us THE ROCKETEER. You could even write the wings into the script. - Cap parachutes in, saves a bunch of soldiers in trouble, and they all call him their guardian angel or something and get wings painted onto his helmet (wings either side of the the A = angel). I'm sure some scriptwriter could do better...

Seriously, comic book adaptations are never going to please everyone, they are interpretations of another piece of work.

Some of you people really need to get a grip. If this doesnt fit your precise specification for how Thor or Captain America look, then dont go see the films.

But you will still go and watch it. Because otherwise you wouldnt have anything to bitch about!.

And I know this is squid territory now but...no helmet. It's a pathetic, stupid thing it really is but it's a quintessential part of the costume. It would be like no cape on Superman or no ears on Batman, it's just not the same. It feels wrong some how. I would have thought in a action shot where the helmet would have been worn it would have been there but it just doesn't look like Thor.

    No wings on Caps helmet

    by dannyocean01

I actually think they'd improve the helmet, as, even though it's obviously a GI, it looks unfinished, but as a huge Cap fan, I can live without them.

As for the gun, jesus, even non-fans can google to find out why that's true to early Cap continuity. In a concept image they're going to incorporate as much detail as they can so the gun could play a minor part in the film and it's all shield-slinging.

In terms of Thor, I'm not sure why a few pics are making people steam over the lack of helmet. Everything in moderation. As long as it's there at the right times, for maximum effect. Let's just concentrate on how Wagnerian that clash looks and how Loki will probably do a Joker and become the favourite character in the film.

616 Cap carried a Tommy Gun in WW2

    by mad_mike

Many of his early appearances had him using the gun.
He didn't even throw the shield until Issue #7 and that was only in a prose story written by a then 17 year old Stan Lee.

He is a Soldier so the gun is OK with Me. Also it wasn't until the 80's that he became the pacifist.

the Thor art looks outstanding. The armor reminds me of the Elf Armor in The Lord of the rings films. That is good with me.

Also, they will be giving away posters of this art at SDCC. for FREE.

You can get them signed by the cast and directors of both films at the MARVEL MOVIE panel

Asimov....Sorry, but Brannagh does not make

    by southafricanguy

me feel sure here at all. The last time he made a fx film we got Frankenstein, and that is truly a shitty film. I know he is good at Shakespeare, but ThOr aint Shakespear Asi. Its old school Jack Kirby Marvel. I grew up reading the Marvel (most of the titles), and so I really want to see the Marvel universe done well on screen (fingers crossed for Avengers), but Marvel has been tight with their budgets, and so they have gone for more second tier directors so to speak in the sense that they are nt "name" directors with a following, or who are very proven in sci-fi/fantasy genres. Obviously it can work as evidenced by John Favraue, but it can also really suck. Frankly of the two (Cap and Thor) im more inclined to think Captain America will be good due to Jhonston. Not because he is a great director or anything, but he has made the only good period superhero film imho, the Rocketeer. So Cap seems right up his alley. And Johnson made a better Jurrasic Park sequal than Spielberg imho (not that JP3 is anything to get excited about, but the lost world is one of the laziest and unimaginative sequals of all time imho)

So far I am not too excited by the costumes (they look a bit rubbery/plasticy), but the sets looks impressive, and they have cast good actors imho. Actually Asi, I dont know what the hell to make of a big budget Thor film. Thor without helmet is like Supes with no cape

    by bat725

The helmet is fucking integral. I've been fiending for a Thor movie since Adventures in Babysitting, and they couldn't give me a fucking helmet? No, this is just a typical egotistical director who always has to have his two-cents when it comes to superhero costumes. That goes for Bryan Singer and his homo-erotic X-Men and Superman costumes, Chris Nolan and his fucking black Batman body armor, Martin Capbell and his Tron-ripoff green-wave whatever-you-wanna-fucking-call-it abomination of a Green Lantern costume, Raimi's abyssmal Green Goblin/New Goblin Power Ranger suits, etc. For the most part, Marvel usually gets it right, but Thor is not Thor without the helmet.

..with Hugo Weaving as The Red Skull, Tommy Lee Jones, Bucky, The Invaders, Arnim Zola...I really can't wait. OK so it's Joe Johnston at the helm but then, character beats and humour aside, Favreau's no Kubrick is he? Iron Man's 1 and 2 were a whole lot of fun but not exactly memorable cinematic experiences. by philldwill

I understand your feelings, however it's not a question of Ego. The costumes were changed to fit the world in which they were being placed and to make more sense in a life-action setting. Cartoons and comics have a freedom film doesn't have.

Nolan's Batman is based in a realistic world, no man in spandex could survive.

Green Lantern is an Intergalactic Police Officer(basically) and he shouldn't be walking around in a leather or spandex outfit..cause that'd be lame. His suit is made of energy from the ring.

lastly, No, Thor with no helm is not like Superman with no cape, or batman without ears. Superman and Batman are wearing costumes, costumes used to inject specific thoughts in the minds of the people who witness them. Superman dresses the way he does to show power, batman to inject fear. Thor's helmet isn't meant to be ornamental. If there is no practical reason for him to be wearing it, he shouldn't have to.

    by immortal_fish

Once upon a time, there was concept art for a new character named Captain America.Someone had the idea to put the letter A on his head.Someone else thought that the letter looked silly alone, so offset it with wings on each side of his head. The character underwent many changes over the subsequent 70-years, yet this winged look endured. And now that the character is being adapted for live action, the wings were removed. Because it looked silly.Do you see how silly all of this is?

    The helmet scenario...

    by carlotta_valdes

I foresee an opening battle on
a rocky plain. Thor (w winged helmet) stands atop a mountain flanked by Asgard's finest facing down an army of Rock Trolls led by Ulik. Battle ensues, Ulik clocks the Thunderer w a huge boulder sending him flying against a mountain with enough force to dislodge his 'wingy hat' causing it to plummet off a cliff...never to be seen in the film again. I love Thor, but visually...for a film? The helmet will look silly over long stretches. I think viewers will be able to relate better with the character w/o a giant winged silver helmet on his head. Again just MY opinion.

    Of Wings and Other Things

    by nativegaijin

It's pointless to get upset about the wings on Cap's helmet without seeing first-hand whether it actually works on the big screen. Does anyone honestly think that, on a movie with this kind of budget, the movie makers didn't camera test multiple versions of the helmet before deciding to leave the wings off? Especially when they must know how controversial it would be with the hardcore fans? Seeing small wings on the side of somebody's head may look perfectly fine on a small comic page, but blow it up on a 50-foot screen and maybe it gets kinda distracting. Especially in closeups. Maybe that's why the production art doesn't have the "A" on his forehead either. On the other hand, it's completely possible that these things get added to Cap's costume over the course of many battles, either by himself or his fellow soldiers. After all, the previously released renderings of the costume include the "A". Maybe the scene in the painting takes place earlier in the picture when he's just starting to lead the troops. This would also explain him having the pistol. If you were a World War II combat soldier, would you follow an unarmed guy (especially in that outfit) into battle? Maybe even Cap himself doesn't realize at that point that he doesn't need the gun. I also have a theory about Thor's helmet. It would be very cool if he doesn't get it until the end of the film as reward or recognition from Odin for saving Asgard. Even as a kid, I always thought of his helmet as more of a symbol of rank than protection. Like a crown that a prince of Asgard would wear.

Glad Cap America isn't a world hating Neocon..

    by ganymede3010

It's obvious that you blood-thirsty superior-minded tea-baggers would insist that Captain America put your deluded political interests ahead of the pursuit of justice and equality for all of mankind. I don't want anyone representing me who harbor hostility and trepidation towards our worldly neighbors.

Cap's been questioning America since the late 60s, folks

    by kevred

It started pretty early in his Silver Age run, so it's not some kind of post-modern revisionist thing to make it so now.In fact, all the way back then, he questioned all kinds of things that the right wing froths at the mouth over now, such as hate-mongering TV pundits who use divisive, race-baiting tactics to further an agenda.Cap is focused on American ideals. When America departs from those ideals, he doesn't abandon America, he challenges it to live up to its ideals. It's something most right-wingers can't seem to understand - you can love something and critique it at the same time.

    by ganymede3010

And fuck Alex Jones, he's the worst thing to ever happen to the 911 truth movement. Whenever he has the rare chance to appear on network news he's portrays himself as a bit-shit insane conspiracy theorist instead of a cool and collected intellectual who's only interesting in pursuing the truth. I'll never forget when he stoop in back of the MSNBC live political panel on his mega-phone screaming 911 was an inside job, anyone who saw that would of immediately associated the 911 truth movement with nut-baggers like him. I use to like him, but after he was exposed for what he really is I refused to go on his sites anymore.

    by thedudeinla

The helmet should be WWII...no wings.

His upper body costume looks much too modern. It would be better for the Avengers.

They should use the old traingle shield

    by malificus

for the initial WWII storyline, then switch to the round bad-ass shield for the Ultimates era. The old triangle would fit nicely with the costume as it is. Amazing pieces of art, just beautiful.

    by orbots commander

For those complaining about Captain America using a gun: this isn't new. Captain America carried a side-arm in the 1940's cliffhanger black and white serials. So yeah, this isn't some new-fangled radical take.

    Greatness

    by thx1968

The pics I've seen of Thor don't even come close to that concept art, but that's neither here nor there. If they capture the spirit of that concept piece, I'm in. As for Cap - I knew this was the way they were going with it, and I'm totally psyched. I'm also a big, geeky fan of Joe Johnston, and after The Rocketeer, I know the guy can nail a period.

Problem with CA movie? Too many characters

    by leo54304

and origins to explain to the audience. Lets see we've got:CA, Bucky, Invaders, each invader, the Skull, super soldier program. Cameos by Anthony Stark, Tommy Le Jones. Don't forget the british broad with the "tits so big they have their own zip code". Lat and probally least we need a decent story, action and a CA outfit so that people won't whisper "looks like a condom on his head".
