A Few More TRANSFORMERS 3 Filming Pics! + The Supercool TRANSFORMERS: WAR FOR CYBERTRON Game Is On Sale For A Few More Hours...

Merrick here...
More set pics from TRANSFORMERS 3's Chicago shoot are online over at The Chive (HERE). Pretty much the same thing we've been seeing over the past few days, although this set of images does reveal something about the armored race cars we've seen in previous pics. We've seen only one so far (to the best of my knowledge) but, evidently, it's actually part of a squad...or herd...or gaggle...or whatever groups sentient morphing weaponized vehicles travel in. Click on the racers below to see more shots from the filming. I have no idea how these will work out in the final film, but at face value they're dopey as hell...and kinda cool.
Meanwhile, Amazon has made the recently released TRANSFORMERS: WAR FOR CYBERTRON (XBOX 360, PS3) video game its Gold Box special for today only - its price has been dropped from $56.99 to $42.98. Is the game perfect? Not by a long shot - but it's a helluva lot of fun, easily the best TRANSFORMERS video game ever released, and it's the only title I've played all the way through in the last...four year or so. WAR FOR CYBERTRON is bigger, more hardcore, and more inventive than anything we've seen in any TRANSFORMERS films to date...or anything we're likely to see in the future. 1/2 of the sprawling campaign mode (set above, beneath, and on the surface of Cybertron) is playable as one of multiple Decepticons...the second half of the campaign allows you to choose your Autobot character. You can switch these characters as you go, and even change difficulty levels. There's also a wild and wooly online element. By the way, if you pick up the game, check out its fun closing credits - and be sure to detach those big-ass gun turrets you'll see sitting around. Imagine being a Transformer walking around with the equivalent of the Death Star's anti-aircraft canons...blasting the shit out of enemies who explode, vaporise, and even splatter on your screen. IGN posted another assessment of WAR FOR CYBERTRON HERE. You can find the sale-priced game itself HERE for the next 9 or 10 hours or so.

doubt those race cars are transformers

    by Bouncy X

probably just "suped" up by the humans to help out or whatnot. although another possibility is that they are transformers who get damaged and cant transform anymore so they have that done to them so they can still fight.

  • July 20, 2010, 4:04 p.m. CST

    by 2007

"WAR FOR CYBERTRON is bigger, more hardcore, and more inventive than anything we've seen in any TRANSFORMERS films to date...or anything we're likely to see in the future." Name one comic book film that's had a game made after it that you cannot say that exact same thing about. Games just have more freedom to be hardcore for some reason. That arkham game was actually alot cooler than any batman movie. and lets not get started on wolverine or xmen.

  • July 20, 2010, 4:05 p.m. CST

    More likely...

    by Saracen1

they are transformers in "high-speed" mode or something like that. An intermediate transformation mode.

For all the shit Bay gets...

    by Edman

He's doing an awful lot practical and on location as opposed to just green-screening everything. I tend to find most of his stuff to be entertaining eye candy, but even for the haters, you have to admit he does not follow the trend of doing everything CGI. There's a bit of old school in him.

The characterizations in WFC were dead on..

    by ganymede3010

I mean everything we're clamoring for in Bayformers is present in that game. This is how hardcore this fucking game is.***SPOILER*** There's a boss battle in the Autobot campaign where you get to square off against Soundwave. Just when we're about to kill him he ejects Rumble and he starts talking shit wailing on the ground in front of you with the pile-drivers. Seriuosly, this game will give you epic nerdgasms from beginning to end. Lastly, Megatron was finally done right. I can't understand why none of these movie writers can get his personality correct. The game depicts Megatron as reckless, however, it doesn't forget that he's a masterful tactician and maniacally brilliant; it also reminds us that a lot of Megatrons seemingly brilliant plans are often sighted.

    Can't 'Robofy' Nascar Stock Cars.

    by professor murder

It would be way out of hand to have Transformers copy Nascar stock cars. And why would people supe up these cars for the sport? Not to mention that they are in the CITY, not on a track. The only explanation I have is that they got all sparked during a race, transformed up a bit, and sped out of the track, under control of maybe soundwave or another transformer for a mission or something. Who knows though...?

It had a great story that made sense and actually had that spirit that made Transformers so great in the 80s and the what was lacking that made the first two films and no doubt the third crap. Normally I would never say a film is garbage without seeing it but no matter how many bandages Bay puts on this new film it won't repair the damage done by two completely garbage films.

If it's 3D, it's going to be converted.

    by Bronx Cheer

When I walked by the 'splosions etc last night, I noticed that the Arri 435 on a chase car was all by its lonesome. The significance of this? Well, I have been looking for 3D rigs ever since these folks showed up in my neighborhood, and I have yet to see a proper 3D rig. (For those not in the know, a true 3D shooting rig consists of two camera working in concert to create true 3D -interocular and convergence - and these guys aren't shooting that way.) So this is going to be another 3D bullshit job. Hey, it;s going to be shot anyway: it's Bay, and it's Transformers, and it is a license to print money for the investors, so why would they want to rent twice the gear to make a proper 3D film? Line up at the box office, suckers.

    War For Cybertron

    by the new transported man

As an old-school TF dork, I dig it. Good gameplay, environments, playable characters, & multiplayer. They really should've packed in more non-playable characters from TF lore, though. And I see why it's already on sale after only a month or 2 - I'm on XBox, & the multiplayer lobby rarely has more than 1,000 players in deathmatch. Nobody's playing it, & that's too bad. It's weird, I actually feel good about paying full price for it, like I supported something. Usually I couldn't give 2 shits, gimme that savings or GTFO.

  • July 21, 2010, 7:49 a.m. CST

    by the new transported man

Yeah, it's one of those pseduo-prequels. A few old characters, a few newer ones, & a story that takes place before the original cartoon series.

  • July 21, 2010, 7:56 a.m. CST

    Thanks transported man

Those sorts of things always annoy and confuse me until I realize it's a video game about a cartoon about a line of toys. Some things you have to enjoy it for what it is. I might pick this up when the price comes down a bit. It sounds like a blast.

You said it as it is.<br><br>Our friend 2007 said somethign to the effect that Bruck's moves have lost money when Bay is not making them. This is not so (sadly). The Pirates movies have made more money for Bruck then any movie Bay ever made for him. In fact, the first Pirate movie was made when Bay still worked for him. The first P*irate and Bab Boys were released the same year. And BB2 underperformed to exptactions, while Pirates overperformed beyond anybody's dreams and predictions. The National Treasure movies, also produced by Bruck, have been pretty sucessful commercial hits as well. Actually, Bruck ends up turning profits every year because he produces two or 3 movies a year, he always has his back covered. Expect this year, where both his movies flopped. All he has to do is look at the quality of the movies he has produced this year and call them for what they are- turgid, souless, popcorn bollocks that have failed to ignite anything in a movie going audience except indifference. <br><br> The mega-blockbuster has its place in cinema, but has to have soul and a story to give it credence. Look at Jaws- that movie INVENTED the summer blockbuster movie. If all other followed that simple premise (great story+great acting+suspense+great directing= fucking iconic HUGE BASTARD OF A MOVIE) the cinema would be a much better experience, apart from the money grabbing franchise waste of time it has become.<br><br> Look at this year! What a fucking waste of time! Quality pieces of cinema like Inception will never hit the dizzy heights of a Transformers movie where box office is concerned, but is a far superior movie by ALL accounts (including CGI and effects.)The rest of the year you can just write off- rescued by animation in the forms of How to Train your Dragon and Toy Story 3... movies that had SOUL and A PLOT and a decent SCRIPT and catered to the AUDIENCE, not the whims of a meniacal MEGALOMANIAC LIKE MICHAEL FUCKING BAY!!!!!!!

bay has said himself that he makes his films for nothing more than entertainment to the pop corn audience. It's talk backers that seem to think he's trying to do something more and failing. As for the quality of his films; why is it all the "summer blockbusters" of this very year arn't making transformers money? honestly, is it because bays just happen to speak to the evil in all of us moreso than clash of the titans and the Ateam? give me a break, he does what he does, he makes no illusions about it and he does it well. the fact that you hate his films more then others seems to me to be a matter of sour grapes due to profits and popularity.

curious how many people here even know what the word really means. plot? how many average movie goers can surmise the plot of inception vs the amount of people that can do it for Transformers. Inception didn't even have an ending and we praise that as an accomplishment.

The difference between what Bay says to cater to teh audiences and what he does is abysmal. He can bitch and scream all he wants about his all his movies are simple enpretentious entertaiment, the fact is, and given the evidence from his own movies, he does think he is making this serious important movies. His own style of self-importance are beyond obvious in his movies. I guess many people think that it's the goffy comedy in his movies that defeats the argument that he doesn't take his movies too seriously. Thing is, what he tries with thwe stupid crass comedy in his movies is to pull a Spielberg, where in the same movie you have serious scenes aliviated with situational and cinrcunstancial comedy relief. The thing is, what constitutes comedy for Bay is just the crassest unfunny shit imaginable. So, he mixes his own deranged self f self-importance and mixes it with the most juvenille type of comedy imaginable. and for the lesser attentiv,e it looks as if Bay is just making light-hearted movies. But he isn't. He does thing his movies are important. The way he makes them shows his misguided intentions and blindless. Nothignis more obviosu then that scene in TRASHFUCKMERS 1 when that yellow robot is captured, and the scene plays with the score playing as if it was a scene from Schindler's List! Nobody claiming they are just makind lighthearted movies would pull that. Bay trhing she is delievering pearls of cinemawhenever he makes a movie. He truly believes he'as god's gift to cinema on earth. The difference between what he believes and what he is couldn't be bigger. You could shove the entire solar system inbetween from the Sun to the Oorth Cloud.

    touching scenes and important messages

    by 2007

so youre sayting that just by including sense of weight he is infact attempting(and failing) to make a serious and substantial film? Incorrect, the fact is is you remove all of those scenes from the film than he would truly and finally be what you all paint/claim shout he is. His films are silly but they are grounded in good he's not the devil and he's not trying to turn the children of the world into devils like I've heard somewhere here. He makes funy little films comparable to light hearted comdies. Yes comedies tend to have morals and good intentions, not just films based on novels. something about mary as a random example. well meaning underdog overcomes luckstar world...etc. infact not many comedies don't play on emotional cards look at all of sandlers romps....Point being Armageddon is a fun film for the blue collar everyman to walk into and not feel like an idiot because he didnt' read the English patient in college or cannot break down the concept of a dream past the difference between a nightmere and a wet one. Even in crank the "good" guys win over the "bad" and his girlfriend mourns over his situation in a scene or two, does that mean the crank films are failures at art house movies. ...just last year Harry compared TF2 to the best picture winning Hurt locker? and then weeks later praised GI Joe...give me a break.

    by 2007

sure I get theater audience moaned when the credits rolled. in my mind that's like pulling a lost and holding out on information in an attempt to confuse the audience into thinking your film is so smart they have to really think to get it. that's not smart, it's gimmicky. Smart is the brilliant story structure of Million Dollar Baby.

You know what the sad part is? It's that Bay doesn't give a rat's as what people think of him, especially people like us. He is sitting in his Lamborghini sipping Cristal, getting blown by models, thinking that all he had to do for this was make loud, expensive, explosion filled movies. Any one of us could walk up to him and tell him what a hack jerk off whatever he is and he wouldn't even care.

    piece of cinema?

    by 2007

I find it interesting how people throw that word around as if it's a difinitive adjective. there are many differnt forms of good cinema. the modern idea is how well a director adapted a long novel ala revolution road where as there are people that believe in going to the theater to experience something they can't find in a book. All of sergio leone's films are example of pure cinema imo but the critics of the time called them tripe. bay may not adapt novelas but he and his crew work painstaking hours to craft out what some would ligetimately call cinema. and the fact that some imply that a person with a tripod and a damp basement is possibly more deserving of the revenue earned by the boys at ilm, and bays film crew(some of which risk their lives for your ticket) is just plain stupid. and again don't talk of rasicm and then defend the crank and hangover films without menitoning district 9 and inglorious basterds while clearly ignoring the true perpatrator of BLACK FACE Tropic thuder. all praised on this site.

I was not making a false image, I was simply saying in my own way that Bay is a mega millionaire who doesn't seem to care what people like us think of him or his movies, that's all. I don't know the guy, true, but it sure as hell seems as if he doesn't care.

"there are many differnt forms of good cinema." - I'm not disagreeing with you at all on that point. Cinema should be varied and appeal to all kinds of people. You are missing the point- Michael Bay, no matter how long he works or how many hours he puts in, or how dedicated his team are, or how good ILM are(which are not affiliated with Bay and freelance out to others with greater film making skills, so that is a moot point), can't make movies for toffee. <br><br> Example- all of his movies are the same mindless crap. Admit it. You know its true. You could CGI optimus prime over Will Smith in BB2 and it would fit right in. Same first act, second and third act throughout each, and each less entertaining than the last as the repetetive jokes wear thin and the action just becomes more and more overbearing. There isn't even a decent script to hold the movies together, and the actors employed to look good and beautiful cant deliver the shit dialogue with any trace of conviction. <br><br> And what does Bay do? Rectify the situation after each movie, learning from his mistakes and the outcry from the public? No- he says "fuck you" to the audience, "I know best" and hammers the screen with more mind numbing action set pieces. <br><br> He needs to stop, but wont as he thinks what he is doing is great. I'm sorry, but there is a reason that people hate Bay.

  • July 21, 2010, 4:02 p.m. CST

    by 2007

the reason is much so that it is inversely represented with his ticket revenue. I could argue that there is a reason people like bay to the tune of $400 mill domestic, not sure how many films have that kinda appeal this year. ILM's work reflects the directors input. It's been stated that not only does bay demand their best work but he contributes to it with his knowledge of photography. The fact is the movies look great even when the transformers aren't on screen. Pearl harbor had some of the most beautiful photography in film but it's ignored cause the script(nothing to do with bay) was poor...or rather cause bay was involved, never mentioning that the script would have been poor without bay but the visuals would have been alot more lame as well. high contrast photography yields strong cgi. see district 9 vs george lucas.

    by 2007

like you said, the scripts suck, like many movies but unlike many movies they are successes. that in itself is an accomplishment incapable by someone deemed a hack. if you put optimus in BB2 it would be alot different...I don't have the time to joke about that. lets try this Compare Bad Boys, bays first film to um say Cop Out, smiths' 16th. outclassed in every aspect of buddy cop comedy action and not because will smith is a better actor than bruce willis...or maybe it is.

Putting Optimus in BB2 was meant figuratevly not literally- it is to re-enforse the point that all of Bays movies are the same, no matter what character appears in them. Even you have to agree with that statement!!! <br><br> I doubt for one second that the script for Pearl Harbour woul have been that bad without Bay. Any decent Director would have looked at the shit on paper and changed it to suit their own stylings. It slike I said- with Bay its fuck the story and plot and script and just throw expensive CGI at the public in the hopes it drowns their senses. That does NOT make for a great director. It makes for a hack who only considers two things, what HE wants and how much MONEY he is going to make.

  • July 22, 2010, 9:52 a.m. CST

    by 2007

sorry dude, I don't agree. Optimus(even in a bay movie by golly) is nothing but noble, that's his character, noble and responsible for problems that aren't really his. Mike Lowrey(bb2) is a care free trust fund bachlor that some people believe is playing cop(wow I know a real characterization, all I had to do was look) will smith infact seems to have a vapid disdan for the lives of the innocent in the second film. I repeat, If you put optimus in that film it would be a different CHARACTER. next. I've seen good scripts and i've seen bad ones. platoon, thin red line, american beauty are good ones...whereas pearl harbor is a bad one, we can argue that a director could have fixed this and that with scripts they are not allowed to write unless they are part of the WGA or we could just mostly agree that there are good scripts and there are bad ones. A great director is someone that can make a great cinematic experience out of a written story, partly due to his resources and partly due to his ability to create film. bay does this in spades no matter how shitty the story is that he's given. Not everyone can do that or have you not seem them all try and fail this summer. You people all seem to complain about story, the one thing directors traditionally have little to do with. But I agree bay could stand to make better choices and still not sell out the audience that brought him his success. I'm sure that will happen at some point.
