DirecTV Gives DAMAGES Seasons Four And Five!!

Published at:  Jul 20, 2010 12:32:07 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

Two more seasons! 10 episodes per season!

And they won’t be on FX! Now you’ll have to get DirecTV, you swine!

Look! Press release!

CULVER CITY AND EL SEGUNDO, CALIF., July 19, 2010 – DIRECTV and Sony Pictures Television will team up to bring the award-winning DAMAGES, starring Glenn Close and Rose Byrne, back with brand new episodes to be produced early next year and debuting exclusively on DIRECTV. Emmy winner Glenn Close, Emmy nominee Rose Byrne and other principal cast members will return for the new episodes.

Unlike DIRECTV’s current deal for Friday Night Lights, whereby the show airs first on DIRECTV and then on NBC, the new episodes of DAMAGES will air only on DIRECTV. Additionally, DIRECTV will have the rights to air previously produced seasons 1through 3.

“We’re excited to partner with Sony Pictures Television as we breathe new life into this outstanding drama,” said Patty Ishimoto, general manager of The 101 Network and vice president of entertainment for DIRECTV. “It’s a win for our customers because only they will be able to see these new episodes and another great step forward for DIRECTV as we continue to build our growing portfolio of exclusive, award winning programming.”

“DAMAGES is simply one of the best shows on television, and we’re grateful to DIRECTV for the opportunity to produce more episodes of this groundbreaking show," said Jamie Erlicht, president, programming and production, Sony Pictures Television. Added Zack Van Amburg, president, programming and production, Sony Pictures Television, "We're thrilled to have a new home for the show and our team of award-winning writers, producers and actors will not only maintain that standard of excellence, but deliver our best seasons yet,"

“FX was very proud to have developed one of the best scripted series on television, but, in order to have a future, the show needed DIRECTV and we are thrilled they stepped in,” said John Landgraf, President & General Manager, FX Networks, who also heads FX Productions. "Sony Pictures Television is a great production partner and we at FX Productions are excited for these next two seasons.”

Over its first three seasons on television, DAMAGES has featured what is arguably the most impressive cast and guest stars of any series on television – Glenn Close, Rose Byrne, Tate Donovan, Ted Danson, Željko Ivanek, Anastasia Griffith, Noah Bean, Tom Aldrege, Philip Bosco, Nichael Nouri, Peter Facinelli, Peter Reigert, Mario Van Peebles, Marcia Gay Harden, William Hurt, Timothy Olyphant, John Doman, Clarke Peters, Kevin Corrigan, Paige Turco, Tom Noonan, Garret Dillahunt, Campbell Scott, Martin Short, Lily Tomlin, Keith Carradine, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Michael Gaston, Darren Goldstein, Sarah Wynter and Reiko Aylesworth.

DAMAGES recently received five Emmy Award nominations for its critically acclaimed third season, Glenn Close for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series, Rose Byrne for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, Željko Ivanek for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series, Ted Danson for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series and Lily Tomlin for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series.

The series earned seven Emmy Award nominations in each of its first two seasons and Close became the first actress from a basic cable series to win the Emmy for Lead Actress in a Drama; Željko Ivanek became the first actor from a basic cable series to win the Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actor for a Drama Series, and DAMAGES was the first basic cable series to take home the Emmy for Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series. DAMAGES and AMC’s Mad Men were the first basic cable series to be nominated in for Outstanding Drama Series. In its first season, DAMAGES earned the most Golden Globes nominations of any series in television with Glenn Close winning for Best Actress in a TV Series – Drama.

The show was created and is executive produced by Todd A. Kessler, Glenn Kessler and Daniel Zelman. DAMAGES is produced by Sony Pictures Television in association with FX Productions.

    by bungion boy

Glad for the save. I actually really hated the first season of Damages. Hated how they would flash forward to reveals so much. But seasons 2 and 3 were far better. Now I'm quite fond of it.

    Dumbest idea ever

The show had terrible ratings, so what makes them think people are gonna buy a satellite just to watch it?

Oh, well, let's hear it for NetFlix, I guess.

    by starhawke

LOVE that the show will come back, but BOO that it's only on ONE provider. I can't get satellite (no clear southern sky), and even if I could, I've seen satellite reception and it's as problematical as broadcast, which is why I got cable in the first place. And good luck on future Emmy nods. They can't recognize you if they can't SEE you!

    by brechtsky

i do find it interesting in that the show has clearly had waning ratings, and downright bad in the last season, if i recall correctly.

And Martin short was great this year, didnt know he was nominated, but he deserved it imo ... complete 180 from anything else ive seen him in, and he played the part really well.

    by newc0253

i really like Damages (and i really love Rose Byrne) but this show's ratings were in the tank last season, despite it being much less convoluted than season 2. I'd well and truly written it off as being over and done, and the season finale read that way too

    God bless DirecTV.

    by v'shael

regardless of the first-run ratings not being spectacular. If only all networks did this. The quality of shows across the board would rise, and the cotton-chewing American-Idol loving masses would have no choice but to see quality programming. And stop dumbing down all the channels for the rest of us.Yeah, I'm a telly snob. And proud of it.

    A pleasant surprise

    by the mcpoyle clan

S3 somewhat redeemed the writers after S2, but there were still some issues. The KZK guys need to do a better job on pacing the plot and not dumping the load in the last two episodes of the season. Still one of the better shows, though, with excellent casts.

    by optimus122

Damages was really good in seasons 1 and 3. Even season 2 was decent especially for a summer time show. I am glad they are getting 2 more seasons. I am already looking for the easiest way to get Direct TV hooked up in my neck of the woods.

    Very happy about this news!

    by loose_seal

Not so happy that only DirecTV will be airing it, as I'll not be switching over just for one show. But still, Damages lives! The first and third seasons were absolutely brilliant, and you know what, the second season was actually pretty good too. Can't wait to see where they go with it. Only ten episodes a season will be good for these writers -- if there's one thing they've consistently struggled with, it's filler, and less episodes will hopefully solve that problem pretty well.

    DVD sales justify renewal

    by mgthedj

The show does great biz on the DVD sales, and yes the official Nielsen ratings 18-49 were bad, I suspect it did very well with people 25-70, with incomes over 50k.There have been issued raised in the past few years about Nielsen not getting enough people who make more than 50k a year to agree to be in the survey, causing some shows to have their audience size under-reported. Glad it's back, and hopefully Netflix or iTurns will have a deal for those of us not with DirectTV.-----later-----m

A year ago that might have been doable, but it's almost impossible now. Most TSCC actor's have moved on to other projects already. I know Summer Glau is already set to co-star in a crappy superhero series this upcoming season.

This is as good a reason as any to go with satellite. As for the poster who said that cable reception is better than satellite. Um, no. That's what the cable providers would like you to think. Anyone who has had both can testify,

No satellite? That's what the internet was invented for.

    by the mcpoyle clan

it was/is one of those shows that requires a commitment to pay attention for 13 weeks at a time. Good luck getting that with today's audience. That also probably explains why it's seemingly more successful as a DVD or stream.Patty/Ellen is the core of the show, but the supporting cast couldn't be underestimated either. It will be interesting to see which direction they go, with Patty having pretty much destroyed everyone she is associated with.

    by warrensmooth

Anyone who believes Direct TV will not sell the re-air rights to the new episodes to another network doesn't understand the TV business. You may have to wait a few months but those new episodes will be airing on another channel.... and you won't have to subscribe to Direct to see them.
