EXCLUSIVE!!Learn Who Writes And Directs All The Season-One Episodes of Frank Darabont’s AMC Zombie Series THE WALKING DEAD!!

Published at:  Jul 18, 2010 9:51:45 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

“Hope to see you at Comic-Con,” says filmmaker Frank Darabont, writer-director of such big-screen projects as “The Shawshank Redeption,” “The Green Mile” and “The Mist.” “We've got a pretty cool ‘Walking Dead’ reel to show.”

We haven’t yet seen a second of footage from Darabont’s new AMC series “The Walking Dead,” but it could be this autumn’s most anticipated series.

Its first season, which comprises only six episodes, began shooting June 3 and will start shambling onto AMC in October.

It’s long been known that Darabont wrote and directed the first episode himself, but when AICN visited him on the set of the that episode last month, we knew next to nothing about who was handling these chores for subsequent episodes.

I asked Darabont himself and he just came back with the line-up for the entire first season:

Herc!

You have but to ask!

The directors for the first six are:

1) Me.
2) Michelle MacLaren (Breaking Bad, X-Files)
3) Gwyneth Horder-Payton (The Shield, BSG)
4) Johan Renck (Breaking Bad)
5) Ernest Dickerson (The Wire, Dexter)
6) Guy Ferland (The Shield, Sons of Anarchy)

The writers for the first six are:

1) Me
2) Me
3) Me, Chic Eglee, Jack LoGuidice. (Chic: The Shield, Dexter. Jack: Sons of Anarchy)
4) Robert Kirkman (wrote some comics I think)
5) Glen Mazzara (The Shield, Hawthorne)
6) Adam Fierro (The Shield, Dexter, 24)

(If Darabont is a typical showrunner, he’s overseeing all creative aspects of all episodes, from the writing to post-production, which he's said is “a full-time job in itself.”)

Eglee, whom I believe serves as the series’ co-showrunner, has been a grade-A force in American television for decades, having scripted lots of “Moonlighting,” “St. Elsewhere” and “L.A. Law” before creating “Murder One” for Stephen Bochco and “Dark Angel” for James Cameron.

Kirkman, for those unaware, writes the “Walking Dead” funnybooks on which the series is based. If I’m not mistaken, 1.4 will represent Kirkman’s first produced teleplay ever.

The “Walking Dead” Comic-Con panel is scheduled for Friday, July 23 at 11:30am in room 6BCF. Darabont, Kirkman and cast members Andrew Lincoln (Rick), Jon Bernthal (Shane), Sarah Wayne Callies (Lori), Laurie Holden (Andrea), and Emma Bell (Amy) are all expected.

Should win the Emmy this year for her work on "Breaking Bad."

This project looks solid all around. I am really looking forward to it.

Episode 4 should be very interesting

    by iforgotabout19

Can't wait to see how Kirkman translates from a comic writer to a TV writer, and with a Breaking Bad director at the helm, should be one of the best of the 6. For folks who've read the comics, I personally hope this includes the scene of Rick and Glenn heading into the city for guns.

Glad she's getting her dues, and to see she's getting some notoriety around here. And I don't mean this to sound misogynistic, but a really fantastic female director, which are in short supply.

    GREAT Writers / Directors

    by rollingbarreldotcom

I'm a very big fan of a lot of these writers and directors from their work on The Shield, SoA, and Dexter. If this can keep up the quality, excitement, edginess, and fun of he aforementioned shows then I'm even more excited about TWD that I thought was possible. Bring on the lurkers and biters.

Gary Busey's monologue in Surviving the Game is still one of the most badass things ever.

would be awesome as well, and is a very different zombie take than The Walking Dead. I'd love to see that turned into some type of series or done as a series of TV movies based on the various books.

    didn't Darabont say

that they're using the first zombie from NOTLD as their template in terms of speed? So no running.

The cemetary zombie in NOTLD *did* run

NOTLD zombie definitely did not run

    by tompiltoff

He did move a little faster than a generic shambling zombie, but it sure isn't 28 Days Later either. I read somewhere that the decay process will have an effect on Walking Dead's zombies, as it does in the comics. Fresher corpses move faster.

If this show is a success...

    by thedarklinglord

And, by the looks of it, I can't imagine how it won't be every bit as great as the shows done by those attached to write/direct, but if this is as huge as it deserves, it might just get more networks interested in turning comic books properties into serious shows, shows with real budgets and real talent attached, aimed toward an adult audience. Thanks to shows like Breaking Bad, Sons of Anarchy, and a few others, television is finally starting to be worth watching again.

    "Eglee, who..."

    by bronx cheer

The age old battle between who and whom can best be solved with this simple test.

If you would use him (or her), use whom. (Him and whom both end in M - easy to remember.) If it is he or she, use who.

    Darabont's "The Shield" episode commentary

    by ides

He really wasn't kidding when he gushed about "The Shield," given the people he has surrounded himself with since. It's one of the best commentary tracks of the whole series, and I've listened to most of them at least twice.
