UPDATE!! A Pic Of Ryan Reynolds As Green Lantern!!

Merrick again... A bodaciously-huge/embiggenable/high res version of the same image is online over at Collider. Find it HERE.

Merrick here...
The cover of the next Entertainment Weekly will give us our first sense of Ryan Reynolds as Green Lantern. This is what he'll look like...
As far as anyone knows, that's a CGI suit overlayed on some kind of mo-cap rig (a la Gollum). Wondering if the energy will surge and wane (as if its driving the suit's 'musculature', if that makes sense?)

im not really digging it. and did they give his hair a green tinge?

  • July 15, 2010 11:09 AM CST

    eh

    by Kenny_Fucking_Powers

I dunno. The mask is fucking awful and the suit looks to much like some sort of nanotech thing. Should of just kept it more simple IMO. But who knows, it might look fucking awesome in motion.

  • July 15, 2010 11:09 AM CST

    Is it just me or...

    by Cagliostro

did they take all of the B&W out of the suit and leave it completelty green?

this needed to be all cgi or not at all

    by maxin n relaxin

this is a character that wont translate well to live action too many crazy cosmic situations and weird characters. its like if they wouldve used bodysuits in Avatar

  • July 15, 2010 11:11 AM CST

    Looks Kinda Fake

    by Crow3711

But magazines give images that glossy sheen that makes it puts things in that weird uncanny valley. The suit looks kinda cool, IMO. Don't know if that effect really required cgi to accomplish. I'm sure it'll be glowing and pulsing and do all sorts of crazy awesomeness, which will be sweet. Overall, it looks good enough to me. Kinda badass. As long as it looks kickers in motion, I'm sold

  • July 15, 2010 11:12 AM CST

    Imageworks must be

    by Shaner Jedi

leveraging their Doc Manhattan tech for the suit for this film. Looks like a similar application(except for the head of Reynolds).

Sort of Dr. Manhattanish, but at least it's a semi-novel take on the tired spandex superhero suit.

  • July 15, 2010 11:13 AM CST

    Practical Costume > CGI Costume

    by luther0701

Even in a still picture it looks like shit. No way that suit is going to look good in motion.

  • July 15, 2010 11:13 AM CST

Mask looks like he painted it on.

    by cookylamoo

    Or it's a tat.

  • July 15, 2010 11:13 AM CST

    looks fine to me!

    by Yourbigpalal83

honestly. I got no big issues with it.Looks like any number of the green lantern suits in the comics. You fanboys bitch and moan way to much about every little thing! Atleast its not like that stupid superman returns outfit with the muted reds. God that sucked! they got the blue right but there reds were so dark, it almost looked like brown leather could have overlooked it though if the movie wasnt so borning.

  • July 15, 2010 11:13 AM CST

LOOKS LIKE MARDI GRA...from neck up.

    Fuuuuuuuuuuuuucccck pt.2

    by evilpresley

My internet crapped out yet somehow sent the previous one. Anyways, This is terrible looking. The mask is a bit wrong which is a shame as GL has an awesome mask. I tweeted Geoff Johns and pleaded for white gloves and I got no repsonse as expected but hits is almost worst than what I imagined. It looks like a bad SyFy channel costume. ALl they had to do was add some texture like theSuperman Returns suit or Spider-Man suit. I want to cry...

  • July 15, 2010 11:16 AM CST

Geez, got a real "mid-90's" feel to it.

    by IndustryKiller!

If this get's a pass and Thor get's torn apart then that's ridiculous, because Thor is far more in the spirit of its comic book counterparts, if you don't like the comic fine, but dont bitch then. This ont he other hand almost seems like a non choice, from before they knew how to make comic book films. Like the decided it couldnt look like the comic but didnt know what the fuck else to do but streamline it into oblivion. It's got zero personality and just isn't as cool as the comic. I kinda just don't get the point.

  • July 15, 2010 11:18 AM CST

    IT LOOKS LIKE FUCKING GARBAGE.

    by Bootskin

Seriously...I understand adapting costumes for film...but that's not even the same suit. Putting a different suit on him and making it Green doesn't make it a GL uniform. Like I said in the shitty Thor/Odin/Loki talkback, this looks like the suit they slapped on Oldman in Bram Stoker's Dracula, with light up features. Complete. Shit.

  • July 15, 2010 11:18 AM CST

    Hrm

    by XoanonTORN

Not too sure if I like this yet...why the fake mask? It looks REALLY bad when seen in high rez. I get the muscle-tissue feel of the suit..but dunno if I like it.

BTW, his hair isn't green..it's simply an effect they added to make it look like there is green light emanating from the ring/suit

  • July 15, 2010 11:19 AM CST

    Not bad...

    by DonQuixote

The detail in the suit makes me think of that whole 'Visible Man' thing. With Campbell in charge, I think it could be a first-class comic movie. Hoping they play up a whole "Right Stuff" vibe w/Jordan and that the cosmic stuff is on a grand scale.

  • July 15, 2010 11:19 AM CST

    GARBAGE

    by TheNotoriousDRB

How do you fuck this suit up? HOW?? I mean come on, if you are going to do something, do it right. I thought the idea of a CGI suit made sense, it really did. So WHY NOT MAKE IT LOOK LIKE SOMETHING OTHER THAN A GREEN STILL SUIT? I mean really folks, come on for a minute.

  • July 15, 2010 11:20 AM CST

Need full body shot to decide.

    by malificus

Who knows, without the ring glare and with some black pants/boots to set it off it might be all right. Kinda early to write it off, but the pic doesn't interest me as much as the first Thor one did.

  • July 15, 2010 11:20 AM CST

    I like!

    by david19

Thats a very cool take on the costume in my opinion. It will be interesting to see how the costumes differ from person to person. Its a tricky costume to sell, and I think this is a great version.

    hate the mask.

  • July 15, 2010 11:23 AM CST

Its not a difficult costume to sell, sick of that mentality

    by IndustryKiller!

People are used to comic book films and superheroes at this point, there is ZZERO reason why we can't give htem the fundamental classics onscreen. Obviously suits will need some tweaking from page to screen, but it's not rocket science to get the gist of it and its certainly not unmarketable. You know what looks more dated? Those ridiculous leather outfits they used int eh X-Men movie. It would be far better if they just used a reasonable facsimile of the "yellow spandex" comic outfits. There is a reason these designs have been around for 50 some odd years and why no matter how many changes there are it always comes back tot he classic look in some iteration.

  • July 15, 2010 11:25 AM CST

    It's kinda creepy...

    by OutsideChance

...that whole "visible man" ripped muscles design is a little too "nipples on a batsuit" for me.

  • July 15, 2010 11:25 AM CST

wonder if this actually is the final deal

    by savagedave

Or just a shopped approximation? I'm pretty sure the mask is painted on, you can see the skin texture underneath (at least, thats what it looks like to me).

  • July 15, 2010 11:26 AM CST

    by david19

Dude, people are used to comics because the filmmakers were smart enough to know that a direct translation just wont work for the general public. Youre delusional. I LOVE comics, but Im not silly enough to believe Wolverine in yellow spandex is going to work on screen.

  • July 15, 2010 11:26 AM CST

I had to kill the Green Lantern because he made a mistake...

    by DickJones

Am I the only one who gets a "Batman & Robin" vibe from the costume?

  • July 15, 2010 11:29 AM CST

That's just a Photoshop jobby. Not the final version!

    by Snake Foreskin

I guarantee that is nowhere near what it will look like on-screen. And if somehow it does end up looking like that, this will be a monumental disaster!

  • July 15, 2010 11:30 AM CST

    Auto-Man!

    by Amazing Maurice

    Anyone else remember that shit?

  • July 15, 2010 11:30 AM CST

I think it looks pretty cool, actually.

    by moondoggy2u

Yeah, its a bit cgi-ish, but really, I think it adds to the otherworldy aspect of "The Power Cosmic," inherent to the lantern ring. Besides, at least its an original take on a comic book film. That's right, kiddies. No Spandex, black leather, or plastic/rubber chestpieces.

In that light, I actually think this take on the Green Lantern is a thing of beauty.

  • July 15, 2010 11:30 AM CST

I was hoping they'd go with...

    by OceanWang

The Kyle Rayner mask. That thing had a little more wait to it. Oh well, it looks WAY better than Thor.

  • July 15, 2010 11:30 AM CST

David19, you're taking what im saying too literally

    by IndustryKiller!

I know it shouldnt be yellow spandex, but changing it to look fundamentally different has proven, over and over and over again, not to work. There is ZERO reason this couldnt work better in it's comic book form with the black, I won't even ask for white gloves, but THIS looks like those red outfits they wore in The Cell. It looks silly and weird with the deep muscle lines, it just doesn't capture the classic spirit of the Green Lantern. You're telling me this picture is somehow less silly than this? http://therad. files.wordpress.com/2009/07/ green-lantern1.jpg ? Nonsense.

Love the idea of a CG suit.

    by Knuckleduster

Makes perfect sense for Green Lantern, considering the source of his powers and costume.

But that mask makes him look like a hammy supervillian.

  • July 15, 2010 11:32 AM CST

    To all the people bitching...

    by Life_is_Fatal

about his hair being green--did you ever stop to think that maybe that's the glow from his ring? Light has a tendency to reflect off of stuff, y'know? But still, the mask does look like a bad PhotoShop job. And is it me, or does it make his head look a little bulbous? Either way, hopefully it'll look better in action.

  • July 15, 2010 11:33 AM CST

Actually, I think this flick has great potential.

    by JDanielP

I'm waiting to see an a pic of the entire suit, with clarity. The mask doesn't bother me, considering the shape of the actor's head. And the glowing eyes help to sell it.

  • July 15, 2010 11:34 AM CST

    He looks like a cadaver

    by goodguy

This is the HERO in the movie? Between his cataract eyes and muscle lines, he looks like a zombie. He looks like he's been skinned. How is this design relevant in any way to the character? Horrible.

The movie could definitely still be good though...

    by Lazerman21

I am trying to digest this, but, one thing i can't stand, is that RING, Hal Jordan's ring is round with the Lantern symbol inside it. . . DAMN YOU! He is wearing KYLE'S power ring . . Will wait and see how the suit looks in film when teaser comes out . . And yes, I know it is finicky to harp on the Ring, but I got a gold one made 12 years ago painted Green so I can have my very own, even got half of the mantra written inside it. . .

the idea of the suit being organic looking and a part of the ring bearer is a fantastic idea. As for everyone talking about the mask being painted on... it's doing the same thing as his neckline and fading into his skin. A new idea, but I think it makes more sense than the universe's cops dressing like sixties super crime fighters.

    Costumes

    by AdamWarlock

Okay boys I know you have your fantasies after the bully kicked sand in your face, and that your comic book heroes would have whooped him good. BUT IT'S JUST A STUPID COMIC BOOK!! You need at least $100 million to not make spandex look sillier than hell. Superhero costumes are basically the same things they wore in the circus in the 1930: a pair tights with a suitsuit over it. Try to make that look cool....

  • July 15, 2010 11:48 AM CST

I'll wait until a few more pics

    by Mr_Fancy_Pants

are released. But I'm not digging it so far. Kinda bland. If you're gonna invest in a CGI costume, why not make it visually interesting? I'd like to see a white, black, green mock up at least. I don't give a shit if the general publick won't buy it. Have some bals and confidence in the character fer chissake.

  • July 15, 2010 11:48 AM CST

This was an easy one to do -

    by squidman

and yet, they've made it overly elaborate. The old debate of Wolverine's yellow spandex having to change: yeah, sure. Yellow spandex would have looked ridiculous. But HERE? There is NO reason not to go classic look here, CGI or not.

    by codecrackx15

....LOL...I'm proud of myself today :)http://codecrackx15.wordpress.com/2010/07/15/new-power-rangers-nope-its-thor/ As far as the suit : Photos from the set not long ago revealed Reynolds wearing only a grey visual effects temp suit during filming, a suit that would be replaced by a costume to be almost entirely computer-generated according to reports. The final suit in the film looks to have avoided the matte green torso/black extremities body stocking of the comics in favour of a midnight green suit with muscle lines made of pulsing green light.

    by twogunjames

And that's really all there is to it. This looks twice as gay as the usual costume because it's CGI, and the man looks cross eyed as hell.

It's growing on me like ...

    by BrooseTheScharuk

...like something that grows really fast. Seeing the huge version that someone here linked to, it kind of looks like the suit is not really there, like it exists in a different dimension from him or something. The mask actually looks like it occupies a different 3-dimensional space from his face, and would actually be penetrating flesh and bone if it existed in the same dimension. Kind of surreal and cool in a very Green Lantern way, if you ask me. I like how they seem to be handling this movie. Wasn't actually interested until now.

Just came back from watching. 8/10

    by estacado1

    MAJOR SPOILERS!!!!!

It was entertaining. The special effects were special effects. Nothing groundbreaking. You know it's special effect when you see it. Other movies have done better effects. I dare say some part of the Matrix had better effects. It seems they used a bad camera for the super slo mo shot. It looks low res and a bit out of focus. And when DiCaprio and Juno walking "up" the road after its folded, that effect could have been done way better. Even the weightless fight of Cobra Commander was not very convincing.

There are some things minor plotlines that I didn't understand and maybe will if I watch it again, but the important 97% of it, i did get. One I didn't get was like how did the defib machine wake Fisher from a level 3 dream state death. Another one is that they show DiCaprio get old with his wife while trapped in the "limbo" universe, but when they decided exit the limbo with their heads on the railway track, they are young. Shouldn't they be old?

The best thing I like about the movie was the ending. Nolan leaves it to us to figure out whether the whole movie was just a dream or not. There are arguments to justify both. I feel the whole movie was just a dream. The scene in Mombasa where DiCaprio was being chased by several men and being shot at several times, he dodged every single bullet while running. It was way too many bullets for a person to dodge. It must be a dream as opposed to being the Matrix. If it was the Matrix, he would have not needed to dodge them.

I know that the sinewy/glowy effect is for wow factor, as is the Jon Stewart glowing green eyes. I just don't know that it's necessary. The mask shape is just wrong. Funny thing is, I would think that GL's uniform would be the easiest to translate to real life with out looking like cheap spandex or cliched leather/rubber. I'm still willing to give this a chance, but I'm not feeling good about it based on this pic.

  • July 15, 2010 12:41 PM CST

I dont know what to think

    by redkamel

No black? Thats the best part of the suit! They need to work on adapting these things better for movies. Wolverines and the X mens suit would have worked if they had toned down the colors a little and/or tried a little harder. Thor and Caps costumes are not even passable...unless its for like a spin off alterantive timeline comic or something.

Fuck, I just hope they use this tech to make a Guyver a movie. A real guyver movie, not a Dragon Ball Z adaptation or an Xmen style hack job.

    Comics to Screen

    by herow/1000faces

Why do filmmakers continue to think they can improve on the comic book vision? Again and again, filmmakers say that audiences will accept things in comic books that they won’t accept in a live action film. Or that a certain visual (Wolverine’s brown costume) or concept (Watchmen squid) may work in the comics but would look hokey and or be unbelievable in a film. Beatty showed us years ago that you can translate a comic to the screen EXACTLY as it is and it WORKS. That is why Beatty is Beatty and Singer/Campbell are douches.

    Ughhh

    by batmccoy

It's better to play it safe and let the story (if it's any good) make or break the film. The suit doesn't match what we've come to know as The Green Lantern. There's no reason to venture this far from what came before. Batman is a different story (unfortunately). he has to have armor. Superman, Wonder Woman and the Green Lantern have powers that don't require a modern take on their suit. 90% of the people watching this film are Green Lantern fans....why mess with it?

  • July 15, 2010 1:29 PM CST

created the Silver Age Green lantern outfit and it is as perfect and iconic as you can get, basically this outfit is pissing on his creation. I'm all for the organic look with energy lacing through it but can you just use the comic as a template please. Black for upper arms and thighs, white gloves and white background on chest. You can use whatever textures, CGI mocap suits you like but can you please just actually pick up a comic. If you do pick up a Green Lantern comic and Entertainment weekly it'll be quite easy to realise "Holy Shit, they look fuck all like each other?". I've seen a lot of Photoshopped fanboy efforts which look 10 times the quality of this effort, I hope it get's tweaked but I can't see it changing much, my only hope is that there might be a "rookie" outfit and a full corps outfit. Also the mask is a physical construct of the ring not "paint", Star Sapphire pulls it off way back in GL 26 (Vol2)

what garbage and lousy face paint

    by rur

Hollywood always thinks its better than the material. Hey Hollywood boys, why the face paint if the entire suit is ring made? I agree with hyattmarc, pick up a comic, the original design is as simple and classic as it gets. The white gloves set off the rest of the suit. Now everything in that entire suit looks the same.

I'm ambivalent. The higher res pic unquestionably looks superior to the pic Merrick linked (particularly the eyes). I'll have to see more pics (and perhaps video) before I can truly judge yea or nay on the costume.

Aside from Batman, DC movies are in trouble. I'll take Neal Adam's version any day over this. I thought Green Hornet looked bad before this joke.

  • July 15, 2010 1:58 PM CST

    That stated...

    by Le Vicious Fishus

the high-res version makes it damnably clear that the "mask" was horribly CGI'ed on RR's face after the fact. Not sure how that got the green light (ugh--sorry for the awful pun).

    by rumpledforeskin

Okay, I get it- you dont want to do old school leotards. And you employ people who consider what they do an art form worthy of Awards and accolades. That being said..STOP DOING THIS!! Superhero Costumes are iconic-The man beneath just gives personality to icon. If you made a movie about Jesus you wouldnt put him in a leather suit to make him hip or so you're costume designer could put his spin on Emmanuel...For fucks sake...You ruined Superman with those dour fucking colors and now you went and messed up this.

  • July 15, 2010 2:11 PM CST

I do like the whitish eye effect, though...

    by Le Vicious Fishus

And i like the organic design of the suit, even if the texture seems a bit off.

Seriously, I wish costume designers could manage to make superhero costumes that didn't look like they were made out of PVC or latex (or leather). Shit, a quarter of the reason why IRON MAN seemed so fresh was that they nailed the look and feel of Stark's suit.

    The superhero/villain movie-design disasters...

    by Cervantes

    ...continue unabated!

Some of these guys are so redesigned compared to their popular souce material, that it seems like they are coming up with a totally different character sometimes!! While there may be some modest modifications in the comics between various artists, some of these movie incarnations are drastically misjudged.

I mean, take DOCTOR DOOM for instance- the FF makers managed to turn the comic equivelent of Darth Vader (Original Trilogy version) into a totally bland-looking and unmenacing character. And let's not forget how a gigantic, imposing GALACTUS was criminally turned into a boring 'tornado'...

Unfortunately, it seems that there's more misses than hits now when it comes to realising the look of certain characters

I just don't see the man fucking man up the ass gayness in the GL costume.

Oh... well... I may see what you mean after all. To be fair, though, the GL costume--although form fitting--doesn't seem to include nipples or 300ish abs. Aside from the mask and the neck area, I've got to say I don't hate it.

    by Le Vicious Fishus

Let me refer you to what Englund had to say about it in an interview:

""... the second Nightmare on Elm Street is obviously intended as a bisexual themed film. It was early 80s, pre-AIDS paranoia. Jesse's wrestling with whether to come out or not and his own sexual desires was manifested by Freddy. His friend is the object of his affection. That's all there in that film. We did it subtly but the casting of Mark Patton was intentional too, because Mark was out and had done Come Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean" --http://www.attitude.co.uk/news/viewnews.aspx?newsid=1144

You know, it never occurred to me either until I saw the movie with my wife about a year ago. So many of us were so fucking naive about sexuality in the 80s, but watch it again--the gay subtext is very VERY clear.

    by ckone

I don't WANT to not like it. But, there is something almost unfinished about it that is bugging me. I think that the mask looks like they couldn't decide wether it should be a full mask or some kind of painted on thing...and they decided to do both. I LIKE the way they handled the eyes, but the way the mask fades into his skin looks like those bad versions of painted on bikinis in Sports Illustrated, The suit itself I can handle being different since he can change it at will, and it could be that he emulates the way it looks when he is first given the ring?? and then changes as he becomes more in control with it? I sure hope so, I will reserve judgement for when I see it in motion...but I am not blown away. ugh.

    by Cervantes

...audiences were completely charmed by that movie when it came out.

Since then, it's like various director's seem to think it's cool to change the original source material's look for the sake of it. Which would be fine if they actually came up with something better...but they generally don't.

No offence to Sly, but he looked far cooler with the actual helmet ON! Is this a sign of things to come with the likes of THOR, LOKI, and CAPTAIN AMERICA I wonder?

    On The One Hand . . .

    by Dave I

Visually, I'm not sure I like the painted-on-looking mask. I also think there should be some areas of black to make it less, well, entirely green. The bright webbing (of energy?) . . . eh. I was hoping for more of a straight up fabric-y costume with actual normal material with green and then the black & white accents, and then the powers would be in the form of that translucent green.

That said, I really only care if the movie is good. If it has a good script, good acting, and the cinematography is good, I'm fine with this. It sure as heck beats Schumacher's Batman w/ nipples look (and, heck, EVERYTHING about what he did to Batman), doesn't it? I'd envisioned it a LITTLE different, but people can't really be all that upset about this one picture in the grand scheme of things, even if you hated it. Can you?

    -Cheers

have put the gloves on before the ring. I hope theres some sort of trailer at comic con, that explains the suit better to the nasayers. I mean the masks shape while paper thin- looks just like the damn mask in the comic, So really people are mad that it's to thin that he's not wearing white leather gloves and the suit isn't two tone and now the whole movie will suck because of this.... This is the movie, not the comic. The rules change. Things do not have to be exactly like it was on ink and paper, infact it would look a little silly imo. Fuck be bottom white leather gloves, a spandex green and white, and a glued on rubber face mask. Yeah thats the look they should have went for...

    by Xeniten

He looks like a generic hero. There's no "there" there. A simple costume based on the original suit Hal Jordan wore would have been far better. Having said that this suit does make me feel better about the Thor and Captain America costumes.

    by JayLenoTookMyJob

...of how royally they fucked up Daredevil's costume back in 2003. You have a simple, iconic design, a costume designed by Wally Wood, and you turn it into some kind of Greenwich Village Halloween Parade leatherboy outfit. No GL's classic, simple, iconic costume, designed by no less than Gil Kane mind you, gets turned into Zach Snyder's art director's rejected sketches from Watchmen. Th' Fuuuuu...?!!!?? I mean, how are they going to defend this assclownishness? "We decided to go in an "edgier" direction with the costume, by utilizing the "modern technology" developed for films like Avatar and blah, blah, "darker" blah-de-blah "demographic" blah "more discerning viewer." Everyone caters to the cokeheaded, brainless suits in corporate and the result is shit piled on mountains of more shit. Nolan, get to work on Batman and Superman goddammit!

    by Coordinate_System

Don't care for the suit, but I am pleased that they appear to be going with the version of the Ring that Hal received from the Guardians in issue 90, circa August 1976. Not his original ring, but the best looking of the lot.

As an aside, if memory serves, this issue also showed a "Vulcan" GL and a Klingon-esque alien vessel buried on earth. Ahh, memories...

The energy mask is awesome, and here's why

    by JackSlater4

    1. The whole thing will move with his face, it's like the illusion of a mask, which will be much more expressive around the eyebrows than Robin/Zorro/Lone Ranger/Green Hornet etc.

    2. WHITE EYES. Seems like just yesterday The Dark Knight gave me white eyes on Batman, now they've done Green Lantern, straight up. This makes me so happy.

I have questions for those bitching about the suit

    by JackSlater4

    1. If you were to draw that suit, what color would it be? Just green? Looks like some heavy shading would require lots of black ink, black and green.

    2. If the suit is made of green ring energy like the tanks, hammers, boxing gloves, energy blasts and whatever else comes out of that ring, why would it have white material and black material when everything else he forms is all green?

That don't make no gotdam sense. You're all fucked up, and your shit's all retarded. You're outta your element.

    by DigitalBeachWar

Is the whole "It will look great in action" defense. '57 Chevys look fucking wonderful just sitting there. You're not tempted to buy a '57 Chevy because of how awesome it looks in motion. If they can't pull off a simple promo still to sell the fucking movie... they probably shouldn't do it at all. The suits for Thor and Green Lantern look so fucking stupid. The only reason they will appear to "look good" in motion is because you'll be missing out on all the fucking awful details of how shittily designed they are. Oh yeah... Iron Man is a fucking boring and shallow pile of shit.

I gotta say I am thoroughly disappointed in this route they are taking with the costume. It's screaming a bit to Venom/Spawn for me as well. I think about flicks like Spiderman, Kick Ass, The Watchmen, or even Burton's Batman where the costumes really looked the part and stood on their own merits as being instantaneously recognizable as the characters. I gotta blame X-Men for the reasoning behind these shitty costumes. Why not just make a really good spandex under suit with molded leather parts? It would've been a hell of a lot cheaper in the end as well. Not to steal Wampa 1's glory or anything... but who are the ad wizards that came up with this fucking bullshit.

Green Lantern sucks as a comic book character...

    by Darth_Von_Stroheim

so I can't see myself watching this, unless reviews are stellar. Ryan Reynold's isn't exactly a fave of mine either. Way more interested in Nolan's next Batman, the Wonder Woman film (whenever that happens), even a new Superman flick (what with Nolan involved as producer), and any future DC Vertigo adaptations which don't completely bastardize the source material (e.g. that Americanized Hellblazer abomination called Constantine). I wouldn't mind a Manhunter movie. That's Manhunter, the female vigilante, not MARTIAN Manhunter; a MM movie would probably be pretty lame...

    Atomica, I have to disagree.

    by Darth_Von_Stroheim

Handled right, Malkovich probably would have been fine as Vulture. Vulture is not even the silliest Spider-Man villain in his Rogues Gallery. Handled right, he could have worked just fine. Spider-Man 3 was a boring, over-long mess which totally wasted its potential (e.g. making Parker act like a douche instead of making Spider-Man edgier and more violent because of the symbiote. Also, featuring more than one villain.), however I have doubts about this reboot. I really don't think we need another Spidey origin story movie. I think a semi-boot which ignores the events in 3 could work just fine. Maybe they could even take a character as goofy as Mysterio and make him awesome. With a little tweaking, Kraven the Hunter could be a fantastic villain. I heard they're going with Lizard though... meh.

Superhero movies have had their moment, but it's over. We've seen with Wolverine. Then there will be Thor, the new Spiderman, this crap, the new X-Men... The budget will be lower and lower and every movie will be like F4 and then they stop making this shit. It was time.

    Quiet down, old-timers.

    by stwolf

This was never supposed to be your Green Lantern costume. He is not wearing spandex. Actually, according to the producers, he's technically not wearing anything. What we interpret as a suit is actually a tangible manifestation of the green light wrapping up the man's body in beams of strength and power. It's not a costume that he takes on or off, let alone one that he has to clean. He's literally wearing green energy. Regardless of whether you like it, do you at least understand now?

    Damn...

    by GroolDemon

I didn't even notice the "embiggenable" image link until now... I can't believe Warners is even releasing this pic. It is absolutely horribly done. Like, so bad this has to be some type of preproduction render. It totally looks like someone shopped his head onto a pre rendered cg shot and then painted the area around the eyes green on an overlay layer. Not to mention there is a ton of bitmap stretching and antialiasing errors on the costume itself. Not to mention, what looks to be some clone stamp marks around the face. Truly awful. One for the Photoshop Phails bin.

    by GroolDemon

I know that the suit itself is going to be done in CG... but this seriously is giving me that floating head test shot vibe. I hope this isn't how bad the film version looks... I hope as well this isn't an actual rendered shot from the movie...

Traditionally, in the comics, the ring could create things of different colors, but it took extra effort and the GLs didn't bother unless there was a good reason for it. Even if it could only create green stuff, the costume is no problem. It can create many shades of green. The white parts are very light green. The black parts are very dark green.

  • July 16, 2010 1:55 AM CST

    No

    by stwolf

Of course his head looks Photoshopped onto the body; we've known almost from the beginning that his face was going to be the only non-CGI aspect of the look.

  • July 16, 2010 1:57 AM CST

    Given all that...

    by GroolDemon

I still don't get how someone couldn't have produced this suit in reality... It seriously just looks like someone could've sewn a bunch of muscle like patches onto spandex and had him put it on.

    I don't know

    by GroolDemon

I just think having some type of suit based in reality would've given the effects crew a better chance at putting it all together in the computer. Take how Iron Man this time around was pretty much a chest plate or other bits and pieces that the actors wore and the rest was put in during post production. That route at least makes sense from a technical in camera standpoint.

  • July 16, 2010 2:13 AM CST

    upon further review

    by ckone

this is still bugging me, but I can see that suit working ON film. Remember how awful the bat suit looked in Begins? The first time I saw the images of the first suit, I could not believe they hadn't updated it properly ( which they did nicely in Dark Knight) but I still held out hope that they would film it dark enough that it wouldn't show up that badly in the movie. With GL, I can dig the very similar design to dr Manhattan, and I can actually imagine the suit constantly shifting and changing itself, altering it's own look as he becomes more comfortable in the role of GL. The face mask thing really bugs me as you could still see his face , since it looks painted on and it does not hide it at all, but maybe again, there is something visually in the film that will make it work. Here's hoping.

  • July 16, 2010 2:14 AM CST

    Sort of like

    by GroolDemon

Even though Dr Manhattan was all CG, the actor still wore a suit with blue led lights throughout the scenes in order to cast light on the other characters and backgrounds not to mention give the effects crew a better in camera stand in for the all cg character that was composited in.

    by Joe Huber

this shit looks like Spawn. I hate the crappy lines on the suit and a lack of black makes him look way less interesting. The mask looks too Batman-ish. Hopefully in the movie they change this a lot based on fan response. Also hoping the lines mean the suit is coming into form and not complete in the pic. I understand comic book costumes don't usually translate well to the big-screen, but GL's should be a no-brainer. Clearly the designers of thia CGI costume wanted to change his look, but it just ends up looking bad here. They really should have gone with the designers of Spider-Man or Batman's suits and made a practical suit and add effects later. This is clearly a case when they screwed up what should have been easy ala the Superman Returns awful "red" in which they should have gone with the classic Reeve cosrume (bigger S symbol as well) but adjusted it to Brandon Rooth's size. I'm sure fanboys can come up with something better than this picture of Green Lantern.

    by Subtitles_Off

Kind of like they're going the-living-suit route and forgot the skin that goes over the tendons and sinews. It's probably necessary as some sort of "mapping" for all the CGI effects they're going to layer on top.

At least it looks more like the comic-book Green Lantern than any of the movie Batman costumes have ever looked.

It might not be what you were hoping for, in your heart of hearts, but at least it's not Captain America.

    Let's See More

    by Dave I

Looking at it again, I'm totally cool with seeing how it is in the proper lighting/setting/action, if they tweak things or not, and have it actually be in the context of the movie. I think some color would accent it well (i.e. black and white), and think the CGI for the costume and the light-webbing/lines will end up largely wasted and unnecessary, but we'll see. The mask could be shaped a bit better, but we've seen MUCH worse.

I'll give it a shot. If the script is solid and the acting is pulled off, I doubt I'll be nitpicking the color scheme or the shape of his mask or if the ring is the right incarnation from the comics. I just want a good movie, please.

    SPEED RACER IS DEAD

    by PRESIDENT BALTAR

Peter Fernandez, best known as the title character's voice in the animated "Speed Racer" TV series, died Thursday from lung cancer at age 83, Anime News Network reported. Fernandez not only voiced Speed himself, but also his brother Racer X and several other characters in the English-dubbed adaptation of Tatsunoko's "Mach Go Go Go" anime series, the Internet site said. He also directed the voice cast and even wrote the lyrics to the signature theme song used in the show imported from Japan in 1967. He later played Lupin III, Daisuke Jigen, and President Jimmy Carter in a dubbed version of "Lupin III: The Secret of Mamo." His voice can be heard in such dubbed anime titles as "Astro Boy," "Gigantor," "Marine Boy," "Star Blazers: The Bolar Wars," and "Superbook." He made a cameo appearance as an announcer in the 2008 live-action "Speed Racer" film, Anime News Network said. Corinne Orr, the actress who played Speed Racer's romantic interest Trixie and younger brother Sprittle Racer, spoke with Fernandez as recently as last week, the Anime News Network said. The two had worked together on 200 productions, and she noted that he was a big star on radio and Broadway and had starred in the 1949 film "City Across the River" where Tony Curtis only had a bit part." Orr is the last surviving member of the "Speed Racer" main cast. Orr told the Web site, "His great joy was doing all these conventions and receiving the acknowledgement and accolades from all his fans at the end of his life." Producer and anime distributor William Winckler told Anime News Network that he was glad that renewed interest accompanying the 2008 live-action Speed Racer film, Fernandez "finally got the attention and respect he deserved from the general public and mainstream press."

when they change things for no good reason, change iconic imagery which has worked for decades. Like I've said over and over, no one is expecting Spandex, they just want some semblance of familiarity. Look at that Batman: Arkham Asylum game -- Bats' suit looks like the classic costume, albeit interpreted via sturdier materials. Though I don't care for the tall, forward sweeping ears, as it makes him look like a doberman pincer, same problem with the TDK cowl (now that is nitpicking ;-)

    Bottom Line (hee hee)

    by Le Vicious Fishus

The common consensus does seem to be that the painted on mask look sucks. I agree. Hopefully it'll look better in later pics/video. I'm thinking it will.

I also agree with the majority of TBers that the partially whited out eyes are pretty cool. In fact, wish they had whited out Bats eyes similarly.

I like the alien, organic design of the suit. Makes sense.

I don't like the (very typical) latex/plastic texture of the suit. Would like to see things smoothed out a little.

And, yeah--I gotta see more till I make a real judgment call here.

Until then, I'm, hopeful. And I definitely don't altogether dislike the costume from this one shot.

  • July 16, 2010 3:28 PM CST

    And I still don't understand...

    by Le Vicious Fishus

how in the fuck "gay" became a synonym for "uncool."

Hell, I'm pretty sure I'm a lot less cool than my gay friends. In fact--hell. I know I am.

I think the 2000s slang for "gay" has to do with the common misconception that gay men (always men) are all drag queens that wear the gaudiest, tackiest, most outrageous outfits. Very few of those guys, actually, and mostly they dress up like that for the pure campy fun of it.

So, come on guys. "Gay = uncool" truly is out of fashion with all but the pre-teen/young teen crowd. Time for a change.

    Spandex was never an option.

And, yes, of course those of you who are skilled in PhotoShop will pick up on any flaws in the photo, such as the fact that the head seems to have been attached to a CGI body. We've known from almost the beginning that the only aspect of the look that was not going to be CGI was the face. So, I guess, get over it.

  • July 16, 2010 4:03 PM CST

    It's not a suit...

    by rxse7en

and in the hi-res image I don't like the way his skin blends into the "suit". Looks like a poor photoshop job. Hoping it works better in the final film and when in motion. Kinda disturbing as is.

  • July 16, 2010 4:09 PM CST

    stwolf . . .

    by Dave I

    1) I just never got the impression the costume was energy the way the rest of the stuff the ring created was. I mean, I thought it CAME from the ring, but didn't have to look all energy/light/tangible-beams-of-power or the like. It's also not that translucent green like everything else that comes from the ring. Hence, I get it BUT I kinda thought it would look more like fabric, or more energy-converted-to-matter. But whatever.

    2) I'm already over it.

    -Cheers

    What's throwing me off…

    by rxse7en

is the leather look on his hands. Makes it look like he's wearing gloves when they're avoiding the whole suit thing. I'll stop whining now.

  • ...since it's all CG, it's bound to look worse in still form and is probably meant for movement that doesn't stop long enough to be considered in detail.

If Bale in his TDK suit just stood there, motionless, in full daylight, it'd start to look bad pretty quickly.

That said, this outfit still looks terrible.

Laserhead: I believe that was Slim Goodbody

    by kevred

And a quick web search tells me that he's still doing it, all these years later.

More power to him. TV back then was cheesy, but so immensely better than it is now.

Should give you hope for movie. And Blake Lively looks like Carol Ferris should. Plus with it being directed by Matin Campbell (Casino Royale) eases my worries a lot.

    by luke_lymon

what isn't is that it's Reynolds wearing it. One typical Reynolds unfunny wisecrack, and that kills GL.

no, i doubt studios care at all these days about what a few fanboys think in advance of their movies. us readers of this site dont have the power to break an opening weekend, even though some tb'ers seem to think we do. i doubt very much anyone is planting this talkback. i think a few people who read the site regularly are just getting sick of the constant, incessant cries of disgust from a few nerds about every little detail of every movie drawn from 'geek' sources. i dont mind people voicing their opinion, but its now at a point where i can just look at a headline and know immediately what the flavour of a talkback is going to be. its boring, predictable and usually pretentious. 10 years ago we were all doing back flips at the thought of a big budget comic book film, no matter how good or bad it turned out to be. now we've decided that our precious childhood memories are in fact much too precious for the big screen. its like the id badge for being a film geek these days is adopting a vicous contempt for almost everything put in front of them.

    Wolfman Nards...

    by Master Bruce

Thanks man...I mean, how in hell anyone can bust on this Green Lantern suit for "inaccuracies" when costume designers have taken MANY liberties w/the Batman costume in EVERY film since '89 simply boggles the mind!

"The functional uniform that looks JUST LIKE BATMAN? We're really going to rip on that? Why, because the color scheme is off? It's got a cape, pointy bat-ears, a bat on his chest..." Yeah, I agree w/you in that it resembles Batman close enough that people recognize him as the character...AND the same can be said of this shot of Reynolds as Green Lantern. Are either costume perfect comic-book recreations? Sorry, NO. But if you're gonna cut some slack for The Dark Knight bat-suit, then why not for this Green Lantern suit? I'm just sayin'.

    Master Bruce . . .

    by Dave I

Fair enough. I am actually cutting slack for both. I mean, I DO like Batman's better, thus far. But yeah, I'll more than happily take a wait-and-see attitude. I'm just saying, TDK was probably the best comic-to-movie translation, at least overall and to most people, so bagging on that just seems, I don't know, unnecessary? Besides, compared to what came before it, not to mention how well it fit in with Nolan's vision and design? I am cutting it ALL sorts of slack (which, to me, it doesn't need).

    -Cheers

    dowjonesindustrialaverage, I understand

    by kevred

...especially when it comes to the proportion of your average talkback that's just a repeated strain of, "It sucks!" and "It looks great!". Now we add a third refrain, "stop complaining!", and 80% or more of every talkback is spent on those three statements.

I'm not sure how it can be fixed. It is a "talkback", and everyone wants their opinion to be heard. If everyone took the time to explain exactly what they like & don't like about each news item, it would slow things down and likely make for more worthwhile reading. But in this day of knee-jerk, short-attention-span "discussion", that seems unlikely to me.

Someone a while back had the good idea that talkbackers could complain all they want as long as they also said one good thing in every post.

For example, "I hate the silly muscle-fiber look to this costume, which I find unappealing, even repulsive. But I think the idea of the "living costume" created by the ring's energy is clever and appropriate." If I was following the rule, that's what I'd say.

As for the plants, you're right that it's unlikely. But not out of the question that, given the power of internet word of mouth, a few people trying to undermine the momentum of bad word of mouth would be a good investment for a project with tens of millions of dollars, or more, riding on it. I suppose it could work the other way, too - how many people from Marvel get on here to bash GL, and DC people to bash Thor? Who knows.

GL's costume should be the easiest one to..

    by Thanos0145

translate to film. (A difficult costume would be Wolverine's for example.)

The power ring is energy based not organic like the Venom symbiote.

    @Master Bruce

Batman's costume needs to be altered for the films because he has no super powers. A spandex like costume won't protect him from harm whereas Green Lantern's power ring does.

cowl/helmet is much too large and makes him look like a bobblehead doll (and is more reminiscent of a doberman instead of a bat), the cape just sort of twists awkwardly and only looks good when he is gliding, and the rest of it looks like a blown out, chewed up radial tire. It doesn't need to be spandex, but a type of fabric would be superior to rubber, which looks like cheap pvc on screen. There are thick, bullet proof fabrics, don't you know? All black is idiotic, as well. Black is the easiest color to see a night, particularly in a city lit by sodium vapor lights. Mixing the grey back in would make sense as camouflage, as most buildings in a city are grey. Dark blue is harder to see than black out in the countryside, where everything reflects the night sky.

It is the reason I am here, sir
I also find the negative for a positive talkback idea to be a good one.

Now, back to the suit itself. If stwolf is correct, I think the idea of a living suit to be pretty cool, actually.

Hopefully it will be done with better taste than the last living suit -- the Symbiote that Mr. Raimi felt the need to forever ruin in the minds of the movie-going nerd/dork ;)

The GL's suit looks better than Captain America or Thor's costumes. I hate to admit it.
