Finally!! Details And Release Dates For The ALIEN Movies On Blu-Ray!! An Amazing Set It Should Be...

Published at: July 15, 2010, 11:16 a.m. CST by merrick

Merrick here...
We've been pseudo-tracking the rumored and impending release of the ALIEN films on Blu-Ray for some time now. They are, easily, among the most desired/anticipated/coveted Blu-Ray titles for AICN readers - and may actually be the one set of films our readers want to possess more than any other (with the possible exception of the STAR WARS features). Until now, we've had few (if any) concrete details about what would be included in that set. However, THIS piece at IGN has finally decloaked the uber-grand collector's edition of the quadrilogy, which will be hitting on or around the end of October depending on where you live. U.S. release date? October 26. U.K. will get them one day earlier (October 25), and Australia comes in a touch later - the discs will arrive Down Under on November 3.

Sounds like many of the same features from the previous ALIEN QUADROLOGY set are returning, along with an intimidating passel of new material as well.
According to IGN, the Blu-Ray set...
have been "reinvigorated for an intense Blu-ray high-definition viewing experience." It will take advantage of Blu-ray technology by incorporating the MU-TH-UR Mode, an interactive feature that lets you access the special features on all six discs and provides an index of all available content. And what does that content include? About 60 hours of special features and over 12,000 images, including material from the legendary early '90s LaserDisc release, the "Legacy" release and, of course, the Quadrilogy. There will also be new, previously unreleased content, such as original screen tests of Sigourney Weaver prior to filming the original Alien, unseen deleted scenes, the previously unseen original cut of "Wreckage and Rage: The Making of Alien3" and more.
The actual retail price of the set is $139.99, although you can already find if for thirty or forty dollars cheaper at certain outlets (it's under $100 at Amazon, for example). There's are many, many more details regarding this set over at IGN (dual cuts of each film in the series, multiple commentaries, a tremendous amount of "Making Of..." material, deleted sequences we haven't seen before, etc.), so head on over to IGN for the complete rundown. Fox is going batshit crazy with some amped-up Blu-Ray releases in the coming months. I love it, I really do, but I'm trying to figure out how to afford all of this. I just won't eat...fuck it. I need to lose weight anyway. A Blu-Ray of Michael Mann's LAST OF THE MOHICANS, featuring a new cut by Mann, is also on the way (HERE). Love this film but, to date, I've been unable to find out how this new cut will differ from the edits we've seen in previous DVD and theatrical releases of the movie. Also in the pipeline: a 35th anniversary issuance of Jim Sharman's THE ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW (available HERE), and the debut of Baz Luhrmann's MOULIN ROUGE (HERE) on the format. The ALIEN ANTHOLOGY Blu-Rays, meanwhile, are are already up for preorder HERE. Exciting...

    I own the quadrilogy

    by eric haislar

I really only want Alien & Aliens on blu ray.

  • July 15, 2010, 10:45 a.m. CST

This is nice, and I'm glad they took the time to do it right

    by DrumsInTheDeep

But I'd still rather have the LOTR-EEs on Blu ray. THEN original Star Wars. Just to burst that bubble in the first paragraph.

  • July 15, 2010, 10:46 a.m. CST

And how long will it take until we learn that...

    by RedEgiraahgnal

...the picture on these Blu-Ray's suck? Because that's what I hear about every long awaited movie, from French Connection to Predator. Seriously, just yesterday I saw a screencap from the new Predator Blu-Ray in which Arnold looked like they had put this creepy de-agin effect from the beginning of X-Men 3 all over him.

  • July 15, 2010, 10:46 a.m. CST

    YAY!

    by djangoilbastardo

The dumped the stupid made up word "quadrilogy"!

Blu-Ray is a pointless cash grab.

    by Stifler's Mom

Everything will be in high definition on demand within a few years. This format is still brand new and yet already endangered.

Will the movies be released individually at the same time? I only liked Alien and Aliens so would want only those.

    Last of the Mohicans

    by Samuel Fulmer

They had to do a new cut because the previous directors cut inserted scenes that looked slighly above VHS quality. Maybe the song that was in the original cut during the waterfall scene will be reinstated.

  • July 15, 2010, 10:52 a.m. CST

I had to kill FOX because they made a mistake...

    Alien 3 and Resurrection...

    by Jeditemple

...Never happened, in my mind. I'd rather think of those movies being a nightmare that Ripley had while in hypersleep. Hicks and Newt are still alive, dammit.

I always read the Quality reviews before buying BR

    by George Newman

I've read about too many disappointments to just blindly trust a new release nowadays. I go to Amazon, and read the 1 and 2 star reviews first to see if they are low because of picture quality. This crap is really important.

I wonder how many people noticed "Bob Morton=Ed Norton" connection. Hmmmm. Sorry about yee olde faithful mutt. As for RHPS it looks pretty damn good upconverted,so I can't wait for the Blu ray release!

In order for me to upgrade........

    by fat_rancor_keeper

...........I just have to hear the right thing. That the transfers on this set aren't bad in anyway. For example anything along the lines of "all the grain is gone and now the films look like a Pixar project" or "looks like they got lazy and ported over old transfers"....anything like that means I wont be buying. I already own the quadrilogy as well which is pretty awesome. But this set sounds awesome as well. Honestly I only really want the 1st and 2nd film, the rest is all about the docs.

  • July 15, 2010, 11:20 a.m. CST

    YES!

    by ewokstew

Glad this is finally crossing the finish line. And yes, Alien 3 the director's cut from the Quadrilogy, is a darned fine film.

    ALIEN director's cut

    by IAmLegolas

anyone else not give a fuck about this version? My main gripe is the re-insertion of the morphing into an egg scene which flys in the face of how the eggs are created in the rest of the series (thanks to ALIENS)

  • July 15, 2010, 11:27 a.m. CST

    @ludmir88

    by DickJones

You say that as if it's a bad thing.

    "Deleted Scene: Burke Cocooned"

    by savagedave

I know that one made it into the comic and novelization, always wondered if was actually filmed or cut at the script stage. Awesome.<P>I love the commentary on the Aliens DVD, Bill Paxton especially comes out with some great stuff, about how the film goes downhill after he dies.

  • July 15, 2010, 11:41 a.m. CST

Fox EDITED out David Fincher's criticism of Fox on Alien 3

    by BadWaldosRevenge

...on Alien Quadrilogy DVD. Can't say I am satisfied with the compromised version. Where's the uncut, unadulterated critical commentaries by David Fincher about Fox studio's interference with his trying to film a movie on the set? If Blu-ray eition remains compromised and is essentially identical to DVD version (Alien 3 special features with criticism excised per Fox's predilection for censorship), then it's not worth purchasing. Alien 3 special features need to be uncompromised with David's attacks. It's been 18 years since the movie came out, and it's about time for Dave to speak his side how he really feel, at least in archive.

  • July 15, 2010, 11:43 a.m. CST

    sounds pretty darn cool

    by Bouncy X

but yeah, it be good to wait for review to come out and see what the verdict on the picture is. i'm guessing 1,3 and 4 will look fine if not amazing. but i wonder if Aliens will suffer the fate of Predator since it has a lot of grain. like many others, i own the quadrilogy set so unless i see this really cheap i probably wont get it. but to anyone who doesn't own that set, this is a great way to get the series.......assuming the image isnt fucked with.

  • July 15, 2010, 11:44 a.m. CST

    by Jabroni

3 & 4 sucked, I only want to own 1 & 2, hopefully we will be able to buy them individually. But I am guessing we'll be fored to wait.

    BadWaldo

    by RedEgiraahgnal

From what I remember, they offered Fincher to do behind the scenes material, make a director's cut and speak free about his experience (and many other people did on the DVD), but he declined.

  • July 15, 2010, 11:53 a.m. CST

    rumor has it...

    by j_difool

...the studio managed to get their hands on some previously-unseen turds from Ridley Scott and Sigourney Weaver's bowels from during the production of the first film, and those will be sifted and analyzed in stunning 1080p HD in an hour-long documentary. captivating viewing i tell you.

  • July 15, 2010, 12:03 p.m. CST

I paid $25 for the DVD set

    25 dollars? lol

    by Bouncy X

i've seen it for 35-40 around here. but yeah its crazy, it was near or over 100 when it came out and now its soo cheap. blu-ray has knocked down dvd prices big time. whats interesting though, just realized the Back to the Future blu-ray set comes out the same day. gonna be an expensive tuesday for some. :P

    ALIENS

    by Harry Weinstein

ALIENS is a grainy, visually coarse-textured film - hope Fox doesn't give it the PREDATOR treatment and fuck that all up. That would be a real shame.

I Buy Mostly Older Films on blu-ray

    by Autodidact

I really love blu-rays of old movies that I've only ever seen on a small crappy screen in pan and scan with mono sound. Watching a blu-ray of say Superman:The Movie is like seeing it for the first time after watching it on TV and VHS growing up.

  • July 15, 2010, 12:41 p.m. CST

DESIRED? ANTICIPATED? COVETED? I think not

    by PinkFloyd7

While "Alien" and "Aliens" are awesome, "Alien 3" is disappointing and "Alien Resurrection" is total, utter dreck. There are many blu rays I would rather see released than this, including: STAR WARS (all 6), JAWS, CONAN THE BARBARIAN, SCARFACE, INDIANA JONES TRILOGY, TITANIC, and APOCALYPSE NOW.

Uncut ALIEN 3 Documentary? Fuck YES.

    by Leto III

For the poster who was wanting some uncut David Fincher anti-Fox vitriol, you're gonna get it -- it was in the original version of Charlie de Lauzirika's ALIEN 3 documentary, but some 30 minutes were edited out, due to Fox interference.<p> Now, we're gonna get to see the whole damn thing in all its glory -- and Charlie finally gets to remove his pseudonym from the documentary in the process.<p>Awesome news.

    by caruso_stalker217

I would say ALIEN³ is disappointing. I mean, yeah, it's a shame it got fucked over as bad as it did, but I think it could've been a lot worse. <p>It's got great cinematography, beautiful production design and features some of the best performances in the series. It may be a mess, but it's a wonderful mess. At least it stays more or less coherent (save for a plot hole or two) until the third act where there is just too much running around and nameless characters getting eaten. <p>ALIEN³ is my personal favorite of the series. I like the ideas and themes and the acting and shit. I think the Charleses, Dance and Dutton, are fantastic. <p>If ALIEN was horror and ALIENS was action, this would be drama. You could say this film fails as an ALIEN picture, since the alien is the least interesting part about it. But I enjoy the other shit so much it doesn't hurt the film for me. It's fun to play the "what if" game, but I can't see a third ALIEN film any other way. After reading a few of the rejected scripts, I'm glad. Because if you want some really lousy shit, there you go. <p>ALIEN RESURRECTION is also more entertaining than it has any right to be. Not saying it's good, but it's enjoyable.

    Will they be available separately?

    by SithMenace

All I want is Alien and Aliens. It would be nice for Cameron to go back and touch up a few things from Aliens digitally. I know that's heresy to say that, but there are a few shots I can think of that will look glaringly bad in hi-def. The biggest one is the drop ship flying into the reactor towards the end, right before Ripley gets out to find Newt.<p>If done right (unlike the original SW trilogy, although there are parts of the SE I like), touch ups can make an old movie feel brand new again.

The DEFINITIVE 'Alien' for me is still...

    by Cervantes

...the original 'theatrical' DVD version, as I damn well hated the 'recolorizing' that Ridley did for the Quadrilogy release!<p>Unfortunately, when he fiddled with the coloring for his 'Director's Cut', the 'theatrical' version on the Quadrilogy set was done exactly the same! It totally messes up the vibrant, natural look of the original colors and lighting...and this will no doubt be the DE FACTO version seen for this Bluray release too...<P>I don't know why Ridley wanted to fuck-up the amazing look of his classic, but he's done the same to BLADE RUNNER:FINAL CUT too. Both of these are too muddy and dark compared to their original perfect-looking color now, and unwatchatchable for me. I'll stick to the originals, thanks.<P>I wonder if they'll also be over-'digitally scrubbed' like the latest PREDATOR Bluray was?...

    Alien3 had great moments

    by BP_drills_america_a_new_asshole

The opening credit sequence is genius. 99% of directors would have had normal opening credits and then spend the first ten minutes showing the facehugger hatching and then crawling around the Sulaco and then the escape pod crash landing. Not Fincher. He did all that in a very unorthodox way. The shot of the alien's head next to Ripley's head is iconic. And Bishop mark 2, with his human act had me fooled until you see his ear hack off. That scene of Bishop tempting Ripley is like Vader tempting Luke in ESB. Its probably the best character moment in the franchise.

Aliens is one of the few movies I'll double-dip for Blu Ray

    by Tall_Boy66

Honestly, it's like Star Wars saga, Terminator 2 and Aliens. I got screwed on the original DVD release - bought all 4 of the first edition, then bought a solo disc of Aliens from the Quadrillogy release mostly for Cameron commentary track. So that's a triple-dip, I guess with this Blu Ray. Eh, I love that movie so it doesn't matter. So that's less than half a dozen movies I'll re-buy on Blu Ray, so that ain't too bad.

I saw the Alien3 intro. differently, BP...

    by Cervantes

...and thought the way it was done totally ruined the way it did away with the characters of the previous instalment.<P>I reckon it might have at least been a tension-inducing WTF? kind of opening scene, if it HADN'T been intermingled with the CREDITS!<p>It just seemed like a rushed montage-style way of dispensing with the original characters to me, rather than a proper 'OH NO!' scene-setter...

    ALIEN 3 is beautiful

    by palimpsest

Yes it's narratively compromised, but the acting and design is great, the revised cut on the quadrilogy at least restores Golic / Paul McGann's character and explains how (and why - the why is important) the beast gets loose properly. I've got a lot of time for ALIEN RESURRECTION. it's way too jokey and the casting is off (too many comedic character actors rather than dramatic actors playing the material straight) but it has some strong ideas and visuals and some phenomenal practical and CG effects work which still stands up today. Yeah, some of it's ropey, but the good stuff is very good indeed.

Killing Newt/Hicks/Bishop fits the movie's hopeless tone

    by Tall_Boy66

Alien 3 is a bleak, bleak, dark movie. It wallows it, to the point where Ripley explicitly states at one point "All I remember in my life is you" to the Alien. So it's not as if Newt/Hicks/Bishop (who's not quite dead but dead enough) death is like "Oh well, we killed them off, let's go off on a grand new adventure" the Alien destroys Ripley's life and even kills her in the end. It fits what the movie is tonally about. It's a dark ending to the series. So either you roll with it or not.

    by southafricanguy

my two cents re Alien 3. Is it total garbage? No. But heres the simple thing, it will forever remain one of the biggest letdowns of all time for me. First, does anyone remember the original teaser that promised the xenomorphs making it to earth? Contrast the pant wetting excitement of what that teaser promised with what we ultimatly got. Second, Alien 3, no matter how you slice it, is a giant fuck you middle finger to fans of Aliens. It totally destroys all the character work that was done in Aliens, and robs Riply of what she won by the end. Furthermore, why the fuck would you so completely waste great characters like Hicks, Bishop, and Newt? Oh I know why, because of that cunt Vincent Ward who thought it was a great idea (watch this grinnning asshole on the Alien 3 extras disc)..

  • July 15, 2010, 11:39 p.m. CST

Fincher certainly was nt to blame, but I really

    by southafricanguy

dont give a shit how beautifully its shot 9which it is), or how "arty" it is, its still a lazy remake of the first film (ala ANH to ROTJ), and the characters are not very memorabel, and at the end you can barely tell who the fuck is who amidst some terrible alien fx. Personally I think the score is excellent, and Sigourney, Charles Dutton, and the doctor dude all give strong performances, but it just does nt save the movie...

  • July 15, 2010, 11:45 p.m. CST

Lets consider how perfect a sequal Aliens is

    by southafricanguy

it takes the same characters, same universe, but is a completely different genre of film. And it does this while introducing numerous new characters, and completely expanding the universe and the concepts within the original film to the degree that that its not even comparable to the first film, becasue its as good, while being completely different. Now lets consider what is set up by the end of Aliens with all the new characters and concepts introduced, the alien series could have gone anywhere (earth, the xenomorph homeworld), and have had limitless possibilities....but what did we get? ....Alien 3, which managed to destroy everything Aliens created, effectively kill the franchise (or at least doom it to the shlocky shit its become ala AVP), all while giving a giant fuck you to fans of Aliens. So by that measure then it was very successful

  • July 15, 2010, 11:47 p.m. CST

And as the above poster pointed out, not liking

    by southafricanguy

Alien 3 does not make anyone a hater, it simply means you have standards, and actually expect a sequal to live up to its predecessors, or surpass them. Just passable or just good enough does not cut the mustard....

Yeah, that's how shitty it is. It's just so damned... eurotrash. Everything about it grates my nipples. Ripley's stupid lines, her idiotic character, her age, worst fucking casting ever Winona Ryder as the android, aliens that talk to each other and go "RAWR!", the crap score, the crap Poseiden Adventure story, even Ron Perlman gets on my nerves, just everything! Oh, and at the end when they slam the ship into the Earth and create an explosion that would make the asteroid that killed the dinosaurs look like a firecracker. Gee, thanks a bunch Ripley and Co. for saving us from the aliens by blowing the planet up. Cannot sit through that unwatchable garbage. Fuck you, Jeunet, you gold digging whore!<p> Whoops, sorry about that. I went all Mel Gibson rage there for a second. Primal movies of fear and unbearable tension. <p> I was 17 when I saw Alien 3. I'd already been told by some kids at school that it was hugely disappointing. When I saw it I fell in love. It is my favorite for it's swelling emotion. It has glaring plot errors but it is my favorite ending to a trilogy. <p> 4 has it's moments but is pretty weak overall. That's my two cents'

Alien 3 is generally hated by fanboys

    by SubliminalJones

Not for what it inherently is, but because it wasn't ALIENS 2, with bad ass colonial marines running around blasting xenomorphs into goo. The film itself is fine(particularly Fincher's assembly cut), and much closer in tone to the original film than the second. It brings the "real Ripley" trilogy to an inevitably dark, tragic close. The less said about Resurrection, the better.

    SubliminalJones

    by Lord_Byron_Farthammer

One could just as easily say "Alien Resurrection is hated by fanboys because it [blah blah blah]." Also, if Alien 3 really matched the tone of the first, fanboys WOULD like it...unless they hated the first one as well. The truth is that the feel of Alien 3 was no where near the first one. It felt like a cheap straight-to-cable abortion. Sorry, I'm not going to go out on that limb and claim/agree that 3 was good, but Resurrection sucked. They both sucked. Spade a spade, etc.

    The Alien³ assembly cut

    by TheUmpireStrokesBach

Read this bit on another site concerning the Blu-ray release.<p> "De Lauzirika said that, while the Quadrilogy DVD was already very comprehensive, this Anthology Blu-ray set will blow it out of the water, with new extras and commentaries. Also, a new sound mix has been done for the extended edition of Alien 3, which involved bringing back some of the cast to re-loop their dialogue." That's fucking rad that they've gone through the trouble. Too bad Fincher won't have anything to do with it. Who knows how much more the film could've been improved upon with his input...<p> Oh, and Charles de Lauzirika is a badass.

    "Alien 3 never happened"

    by Kaitain

"Never happened, in my mind. I'd rather think of those movies being a nightmare that Ripley had while in hypersleep. Hicks and Newt are still alive, dammit." <p> I don't even think you need to jump through any guilt-inducing hoops to reach this conclusion. If somebody released Citizen Kane 2 in which it was revealed that Kane was in fact a cyborg from space, you could safely treat it as non-canonical even if it were an official studio release: the makers and the studio would have lost the right to have it treated by the public as a true sequel. So it is with Alien3, which starts off with the more-or-less impossible contrivance that there were alien eggs aboard to Sulaco. Sorry, but NO. There weren't. There couldn't have been. It does not connect up to the previous story. It is effectively a "what if?" story set in a tangential narrative universe. It shouldn't be treated as canon.

Alien 3 completely destroyed everything that was set up in the second film. It didn't have to be Aliens 2, but it could have built upon the greatness of Aliens with crapping all over it. With all the possible stories that could follow Aliens, they decided to have Ripley crash land on a prison planet and kill off all the other characters from the previous film? Sorry, but that's lame!
