A New Pic Of Odin, Loki, And Thor From Their New Movie!! + CAPTAIN AMERICA And THOR Will Be Converted To...Wait For It...3D!!

Merrick here...
The Los Angeles Times has a new picture from THOR, featuring Anthony Hopkins as Odin,Tom Hiddleston as Loki, and Hemsworth as the title character. Punch Odin's eyepatch to jump to the Times for a slightly embiggened version.
The same article goes on to reveal that both THOR and CAPTAIN AMERICA will be issued in 3D, although neither is/was shot in 3D.
"I'd say there's not a great feeling out there for conversion based on some of the films that may have succeeded financially but had their artistry come under fire," Feige said, not naming names but most likely referring to "Clash of the Titans," the Warner Bros. release that surpassed $490 million in worldwide box office but was savaged by critics for a rushed 3-D conversion that many saw as especially clumsy, distracting and ill-advised. Feige, in London for "Captain America," pledged that "an unprecedented amount of time" would be devoted to the conversion process. He also said the films will benefit from the fact that the 3-D choice was made early on with passion and planning and not in post-production, as was the case with a flurry of films that came on the heels of "Avatar" and its historic box-office success. "In being able to think in 3-D from the start -- and having every bit of our special effects rendered in true 3-D -- we have the opportunity to do it right," Feige said.
...says Marvel's Kevin Feige in a a piece that explains why CAPTAIN AMERICA isn't actually being shot in 3D to begin with. It's an interesting article - jump over to the Times to check it out. "In being able to think in 3-D from the start -- and having every bit of our special effects rendered in true 3-D -- we have the opportunity to do it right,". I'll believe it when I see it.

Even Avatar, I think was more satisfying on blue ray than 3d, and that's the pinnicale so far. I'm not swayed by 3D though I think that most of the ticket buying public is.

I wish Hollywood would get off its fat ass and start producing more movies containing: superheroes, 80s tv shows, cartoon franchises, bestselling novels, vampires, wizards, talking animals, sequels, prequels, sidequels, remakes, relaunches, and reboots. I am sick and tired of all the original ideas polluting the theatres.

if you dont get the costume right the whole flow of the movie will be off. Loki looks like a light weight Ozymandius. None of them look like Gods...they look like jackasses wearing left overs from Batman Forever repainted Gold and Green.

    Not Impressed

    by Dave I

I still don't buy Nordic Gods dressed up in futuristic Power Rangers-type armor. I mean, shouldn't they look all Norse mythology-like? Odin should be more like, I don't know, a Viking GOD, either in normal armor, or, I dunno, a cloak? He's a GOD, what does he really need armor for? And his eye-patch should just be an eye-patch. Neil Gaiman's portrayal was more what I'd like to see (it was a novel, but that subdued look/description, not bright-shiny sort of post-modern crap).

As for the 3D thing. Isn't that getting old? It was great in Toy Story, but not EVERYTHING needs to be converted to 3D. This could work, but I'm a bit skeptical. Especially since it wasn't shot in 3D. I AM still looking forward to Captain America though, I'll probably just see it in 2D though. I am not buying into the 3D hype, particularly after how bad it reportedly was in Clash of the Titans and The Last Airbender. I'll wait until they've perfected the medium before I start paying loads of extra cash for it.

-Cheers

  • July 14, 2010, 10:14 a.m. CST

"I'll believe it when I see it."

    by cloudrider`

exactly my sentiment. 3d conversion looks like poo. and i dont know why they would not just use cameron's 3d camera and do it right. what's with this "unprecedented amount of time" they will devote to get the 3d right. if you're going to do conversion then you're not doing it right at all.
and i still dont know what to think of the costumes. are they making a serious film or is this supposed to be campy? you want retro or you want futuristic? if you mix the two then it's going to look campy, like flash gordon campy.

    by ZombiKiller86

Seriously. Not every fucking movie needs the 3D treatment. It's getting old fast. If it really was intended for 3D, okay then, but doing the conversion thing makes the film look like everyday garbage.

  • July 14, 2010, 10:18 a.m. CST

Holy crap, that pic looks bad.

    by Nice Marmot

It looks like a Krull sequel. Of course I love Krull, but damnit, this is f'ing THOR. It should look like Braveheart w/ 1 extra hammer, snow, wings and horns.

With its 3D, M Night wanted 3D all along and he filmed with the conversion in mind and they were able to take their time and do it right blah blah. I will say visually M Night is fairly talented director, he seems to be very careful and considered in regards to shot composition, etc. I feel like if he couldn't get it right using the chances of Joe Johnson getting it are slim to none

Those outfits- Ugh! Why are they so exactly like

    by UltraTron

they're drawn only much cooler because Thor was always gay looking like captain America? Why isn't this all digital so the materials in the costumes can be truely amazing? Why isn't the whole film digital so it can all be made in true 3D? Why did they use gold spraypaint on ironman instead gold chrome like 3p0? Why do men ever have long hair? It's hot and it's alot to deal with

the more pics I see of this movie the more that it reminds me of a Daredevil / Ghostrider type movie. alot of potential but ultimately sucked. Thor is too girly looking, not a natural looking viking type. and the costumes look like they stole them out of Spinal Taps closet.

    What's the worst that happens?f

    by cookepuss

We get another Fantastic Four? Honestly. FF wasn't as good as Spider-Man or X-Men, but it definitely wasn't as bad as Elektra or Punisher War Zone. The worst case scenario is that Thor is like FF - fun, harmless, and ultimately forgettable. I guess that's okay. I'd much rather a "disaster" of 00's Fantastic Four proportions than 90s era Captain America or Corman Fantastic Four. At least the Tim Story FF or Ratner X3 were watchable and even occasionally not so bad, unlike Elektra - horseshit on celluloid. I can't see Thor being worse than that [00's FF].

As far as this pic goes, I can't help but remember stills for the Spider-Man or X-Men movies. I remember thinking how they looked like cheesy shit. In motion, and in context, it all looked better. I'm reserving judgment on Thor until I at least see a full 2min trailer.

Spider-Man and the Reeves Supes costumes are probably the best; the misses are too plentiful to mention.

    Fair Enough, Fuzzyjefe

    by Dave I

Hey Fuzzyjefe, yeah, we'll see. I'm also not voting for them to kill the fun by making all comic films into The Dark Knight or CSI: Super Heroes Unit. And it's one picture, so maybe it plays out awesome in a movie while being faithful to the comics and the Marvel Universe. I just personally wanted a bit more of a natural looking homage-to-Norse-tradition feel to it, I guess, or maybe just a different view than the Kirby-esque type of visuals (although I DO think the helmets should make an appearance, they just seem iconic and kind of ceremonial in iconic a strike-fear-into-their-hearts sort of way through recognition if nothing else). I guess I was hoping for a tad more, organic look perhaps? I'm not totally ready to crucify it though, and I don't have to have the movie custom-tailored to my fanboy-rants on AICN to give it a chance either.

-Cheers

I'm really confused about loserguy3000 being so upset that Howard Stark was recast. Are you upset that they didn't use the same guy who was only seen in photos in Iron Man 1 in Iron Man 2? I assume not? So then you're upset because Iron Man 2's John Slattery is not playing Howard Stark in Captain America, right? Except Captain America is set about 30 years before the 1970s footage of Stark seen in Iron Man 2. How would it make sense to use Slattery for that? They obviously will need a very young Howard in Cap. Your anger does not compute.

    by CreasyBear

but could we at least keep them around Gladiator levels? Something that actually looks like metal and not Halloween plastic? I know they're gods, but I'd prefer someone come up and throw some dirt on those outfits. Maybe smash a few dents here and there. That photo shouts, "What's up, 'Dracula!' We brought cheese dip and the Monster Mash CD!"

why is the armor so small? why does the 'armor' look like leather? the fuckin eyepatch is miserable. when i first heard hopkins was odin i imagined him in this giant armor, imprisoned almost in a giant prison, but making him appear 10 feet tall. instead they give him fuckin brian singer inspired xmen costumes. it is funny that 'marvel studios' will now be releasing crap just like every other studio in the country.

    by Chuck_Chuckwalla

Those costumes look a tad too shiny for me. I was hoping to see costumes that looked more Lord of the Rings — like Odin would have had armor like King Theoden. Until I see some actual clips of the film, I don't think it's fair for me to pass judgement that the whole film and declare it to be an "epic fail".

Does Sir Anthony Hopkins ever look... silly. He should have retired from acting years ago when he said he was going to and spare himself the indignity of THAT OUTFIT! -- Look I'm a Marvel fan and a fan of super-hero comics in general, but I can tell you that Jack Kirbyesque outfits do not translate well to film. The Thor film may not actually end up sucking, and I will not (like some AICN talkbackers) assume that it balls based on the sets or costumes, but I can't say that I am terribly excited about this one. I also fear that exec meddling will destroy The Avengers film.

    by SK229

Wow... I hope they do something to make these costumes look better. And I actually thought IM 2 was enjoyable and LOVED The Incredible Hulk... some of the effects were a little dodgy, but the lighting and tone of the movie was as good or better than Iron Man. And a lot of the scenes cut from the movie would have made it even better. Damn shame there won't be Ed Norton... or any sequels.

If there were not two cameras, and it's not CGI, THE INFORMATION IS NOT THERE to generate two correct left and right images. It CANNOT be done well, because it's trying to create information that Does Not Exist. Result: fuzzy images, floating hair, cardboard-cutout objects. If they were really thinking about it that far in advance, they'd have filmed it with a splitter, it's not rocket science.

    by kevred

I'm starting to think that I need to drop all my ideas about how this film might turn out. Every new image gets a little weirder adn less grounded in "realism", for lack of a better word.
Now, I know this is gods and Asgard, but I think a lot of us were expecting more of a LOTR look - more organic, lived-in. What we're seeing is more Flash Gordon, Iron Man, SW prequels - a sort of molded, plasticky, artificial look to everything. Take the set above - the lines are painted on the walls, but they don't really look *anything* like stone.
This isn't to say it's bad - I'm not saying, "they didn't do this right!" But it's all a bit "prettier" than expected. No Henry V here.

Costume Designer, Dost Thou Know A Great Design?

    by PITCHPERFECT

I really hate what I've seen so far in the way of publicity stills, concept art and behind the scenes footage. How could the costume designers get it so wrong? I understand the idea that the Asgardians are aliens who have taken the form of legendary Norse Gods, but what I'm seeing here doesn't really cry out Alien Norse Gods at all. It seems Branagh and co have opted to abandon any attempts to recreate the head gear, iconic helmets associated with the look of the comic book? No helmets in concept art or photos so far, Heimdall being the exception from what I saw from a short clip aired on a television show.

The negative reviews of 3-D experiences and the bad products that have come to use 3-D to justify a ticket markup will kill any goodwill for 3-D way before these two question marks hit the screen to the point where people will look at 3-D as a gimmick to sell bad movies and turn people off to the movies as a whole.

...because the Vikings are trying to look like the Gods of Asgard, but can only mimic the highly-advanced armour of their Gods with more primitive methods and materials. The Vikings are wearing rudimentary versions of this hi-tech armour, but made from stitched-together animal fur, leather and forged metals.

Why not film it in 3D if they knew from the start?

    by Eyegore

I read the article. The director tried shooting with 3D cameras for one day and found it to be complicated and confusing, like anyone who had no experience would. They should have fired his ass on the spot and hired someone younger who really believes in 3D and is willing to work with the 3D cameras to make a great movie. I love 3D movies and would be happy if every movie ever made from now on was filmed in 3D, but this conversion after filming in 2D is just making the haters yap louder and turning people against it. And screw you guys, too. You don't like 3D (whah it gives me a headache, the movies make me cry) just go see the 2D version, idiots! by Katet19

#1 not related to the eternals in any way "1,000 years ago, the Asgardian GOD Thor encountered some Eternals, but the encounter was erased from his mind, to prevent him from learning about the Celestials, who were about to return to Earth. An Eternal named Ajak became the Celestial's spokesperson, and put himself to sleep when the Celestials left, to wait for their return 1,000 years later to judge humanity."

    Asgardians from Marvel.com

    by Katet19

Inhabiting the Nine Worlds in the other-dimensional Asgardian system are six races of humanoid life forms. Each race is different and intelligent, but the most powerful race is that of the Gods. The Gods are the most human looking and believed to have inhabited Earth at one time only to move to Asgard sometime later. Norsemen and Germanic tribes used to worship the Asgardians nearly a millennium ago and that is why some of the names differ slightly like Wotan instead of Odin. Even though certain Gods are still interested in humanity such as Thor, the Asgardians do not have any more active worshippers or seek to have any. The gods possess superhuman abilities such as super strength and superhuman endurance. An average male god can lift up to 30 tons while an average female can lift up to 25 tons, but there are those that exceed these specifications. The Gods are also gifted with extremely long life, but are not immortal like the gods of Olympus. They are also immune to all terrestrial diseases and are highly resistant to conventional forms of injury.

    "Alien Origin"

    by Katet19

There has been some contradiction regarding the origin of the Asgardians. Main Marvel canon states that the Asgardians are descendants of the Elder Gods,[volume & issue needed] as are all other pantheons on Earth.[volume & issue needed] Some comics set in alternate universes have claimed that they are not Gods. Rather, they are aliens whose science and abilities are advanced so far beyond the science and abilities of humans that the Asgardians appear to be magic, such as in "Earth X" where the Asgardians turned out to be the final evolution of manipulation by the Celestials.[1]

Neo-futurist valhalla? Shoot the Art Director

    by KillaKane

I mean WTF? why does every comic franchise automatically necessitate a complete design make-over? Of late it's generally of the hackneyed plastic power ranger variety, kinda defeats the point of adapting such a popular IP - there's a built in fan-base with expectations to see a faithful representation of a character etc on screen.

    Story of an ex-Thor fan

    by Kontarsky

I used to be a huge fan of the Thor comics. I'd defend the comics all of the time when my friends who were into the more popular heroes would rag about it. Loki was my favourite Marvel character. I'd buy tons of Thor comic paperbacks, sketch the characters all of the time, and so on. Then Ragnarok happened in the comics. I was initially angered, but I thought the comic was good with Oeming writing and his fantastic artists. Then a piece of shit comic came out by that hack who was on Spider-man awhile. I finally came to my senses and my Norse heritage told me to wake the heck up, read the myths in their entirety, and stop reading an abortion of Norse myth. I've got to say I am happy it happened shortly before the film casting was announced, because this is some of the worst casting I've seen in my life. Branagh has filled the film with very good supporting actors like Portman, Feore, and Hopkins in an attempt to get people interested. It's not going to work - we've seen this shit before. Odin's casting sucks...as great as his actor has been in stuff...I just don't think he's going to give the over the top presence needed, considering his most recent outings. We needed Brian Blessed. And we were robbed of him. Brian Blessed can completely make something watchable. Watch Return to Treasure Island some time – only he and another character actor kept me awake during it. They actually made it a good series. Thor's casting is another problem…he’s a nobody from ST reboot. I'm not seeing it, really, and I am all for unknowns, if the casting makes sense (and it usually does not these days). Skarsgaard would have worked well, don't know why he wasn't picked.

The Loki casting, however, sucks so much it made me ill one day. Branagh just gave his pal from Wallander the job. The guy's British, he doesn't even have the looks or size for Loki. While Loki was quite thin for an Asgardian, he still was built enough to kick the shit out of you. Guys like Bela B (Dirk Dirk Felsenheimer from Die Artze) might be older, but they look HELLLA closer to comic Loki, have a mischievous look to them, and I'd sooner pay to watch some guy speak heavily accented English but give real umph to his role over another Brit. Fuck this film, fuck the casting, and fuck anyone who is silly enough to still be hyped for it. Loki needed an older and experienced character actor. This film has died for me just like Avengers (over Norton), and Captain America (shit Cap and Red Skull casting). In the end, my opinion is nothing more than my opinion and people are going to complain people need to quit whinging, but I needed to get this off my chest. I used to be a Thor fan and I could give a fuck less what they’ve done with that Comic now, whether it iis the comics or films. I’d much rather read about Loki tying stuff to his bollocks and having a goat pull him around by his bollocks. That’s in a real Norse myth, by the way – it is more raunchy and entertaining than anything you’ll read in a Thor comic. Funny thing is, I didn’t even start complaining about Idris Elba, but that’s another conversation for another day…

Have nothing against the concept of

    by Dingbatty

alien armor, but these designs simply aren't as dynamic, ALIEN, and mind-blowing as something Kirby or Simonson cooked up. The fact that they didn't even attempt to bring Kirby or Simonson's design's to life is what's wrong here; arrogant bastards think they are superior artist. Lack of faithfulness is what's destroying these Marvel movies. That, and using shit materials. Didn't production designers learn their lesson from Jackson's LOTR movies? The plastic crap is for distance shots, the real deal for closeups. This will be even more apparent in this age of high def home viewing.

I have a bad feeling about this

    by Excelciyour

As a Marvel fan since the early 80’s I am thrilled these properties are making the big screen all these years later no doubt. However it’s these last two – Thor and Cap – that have me shaking my head. These two iconic characters are absolutely essential to the Avengers AND THAT IS THE ONLY REASON THEY HAVE THEIR OWN BACKSTORY MOVIES. Back story moves. IMO that’s all the Thor and Cap movies are being made to set up the Avengers, that's it. And the quality will suffer for it just as Iron Man 2 did.

  • July 15, 2010, 2:12 a.m. CST

    Oh My god.

    by batmans_pants

Those costumes don't look like a norse god. I've seen loads of norse gods in my time and I can tell you they don't dress like that. Folks this is a comic book movie about the marvel Super-hero Thor. It's not supposed to be realistic. It's supposed to reflect the comic-book costume. To my eyes, it does. You are welcome to your opinion of course, but lets not forget the context. None of this is realistic. At all. It's supposed to be fun and entertaining. If it looked like we imagine a norse god to look like would you all be complaining that it looks nothing like the comic? Probably.

They shouldn't look like they walked off a toy assembly line. Ugh. I know this a very slight nod to Marvel's take on the characters but Hopkins' Odin looks like an old Art Deco space pirate instead of the War-wise All Father. I knew I would not get North myth takes on these characters, but between this and the 3-Dud, rentals for Thor and Cap at best now.

We need a gritty faux-Nolan Thor. Yes whilst building a covert meth bunker a Finnish redneck falls into a strange cavern in his back yard and discovers an ancient suit of grimy armor. Then in a hazy drug-fueled revelation he becomes convinced that when he wears the suit he is possessed by the spirit of an ancient Norse god. There's no magic, no shiny bullshit suit and we're never really certain whether Thor is even sane. Blah blah etc it basically writes itself from that point you can thank me for all the Oscars/cash later.

    Ringwearer9 re: fun costumes

    by kevred

You make a good point. My question/skepticism is, how likely is it that they'll also capture the *tone* of those great old Lee/Kirby stories? It doesn't do much good to have outlandish costumes if they're just going to shoehorn it into the "real" world of Iron Man, explain away the wonder, and ground the myths in some kind of alien nonsense (which hopefully, they won't do).
I'd be astonished beyond words if they could make the story, dialogue, and delivery as over-the-top as those old comics. *That* would make the wacky costumes make sense.
The main thing that's keeping my hope up is that it's Branagh. When i first heard he was attached to this, I thought, "if he can breathe so much life into Henry V and Much Ado About Nothing and make them work as easy-to-follow, fun cinema, then he is perfect for this gig". And reading that the film's producers appreciated 'Much Ado' the same way gives me hope that they hired him for his strengths.
