I loved Deadwood, but this sounds lame. And I agree: Bring on Game of Thrones!!!
-
Anyone not interested in this has fucking suspect taste in film and TV.
-
Match made in heaven.
-
Shows like this and Boardwalk Empire are reasons for getting HBO.
-
Good job, HBO.
-
with Deadwood - lied and said there would be 2 movies to wrap up the series - never happened. Tell ya what Milch and HBO - give us a Deadwood finale or I watch nothing connected to Milch. Hope others do the same.
-
Deadwood was one of the two or three best dramas of the last decade, so I'm looking forward to this one. And Dustin Hoffman + Milch's famously incredible dialogue? Ladies and gentlemen, I think we have our Emmy winner for Drama Lead Actor next year (or whenever this comes out).
-
Been waiting on this announcement for months.
-
Deadwood was great, but the idea that the masses are going to somehow rise up in rebellion because there wasnt a TV movie wrap-up (something that anyone with 2 brain cells knew was a lie the second he said it) is laughable, almost as laughable as the 17 people who haunted TBs all over the interwebz complaining about Carnivale.
-
I'm actually excited about the concept, there's lots of scumbags involved in horse racing and Milch writes great scumbags.
-
He was given the chance to keep ALL of the actors and end with 6 episodes. For some reason he felt he couldn't deviate from the time lapse per episode yet he could make two two-hour movies?

John from Cincinnati sucked and who gives a shit about horse racing.
-
Lucks like it turned out OK.
-
Dustin Hoffman couldn't act his way out of a paper bag and horse racing doesn't inspire much fascination in me, but I'll give it a shot for Milch and Mann.
-
They're gonna need a little Luck to overcome the Gedrick curse...
-
...and how they're stunned that David Fincher would waste his talent on that premise...well. Now I know what that feels like.
-
I like Deadwood better than most every other series I've ever watched. I tend to go back and watch it at least once a year.
-
Milch owns racehorses, so this is a topic near and dear to him
-
1. It is not Milch's fault that Deadwood did not get to continue/conclude. HBO only partially owned Deadwood, and the expense made it barely worth their time - they felt that Milch's talents could be more profitably used on a show that they could own fully. This became John From Cincinnati. Milch did everything in his power to keep Deadwood, including trying by himself to get more financial backing.

2. John From Cincinnati does not suck, and is one of the closest shows we have to Twin Peaks (not on a superficial level obviously).

3. It's going to be difficult for this show to not be phenomenal.

People still parroting that "Milch screwed us" story
by Guy Who Got A Headache And Accidentally Saves The World
With deadwood? Get your fucking story straight on that one, he didn't "abandon" deadwood to do john from cincinatti, blame the HBO executives for that. And you think he can just wave his fucking hands and get the money and all the actors back and rebuild all the sets to do those two movies? Listen to yourself dumbass. Besides, as Milch himself said, endings are overratted, there's nothing wrong with the show ending the way it did. It would have been nice to have more but why are people still throwing a bitch fit about it.
-
because:

A) No Whedon B) No pwesents
-
You can't blame someone for investing the time to watch the series, liking it throughout, and being pissed at the ending. I liked the Deadwood ending as well, and I'm re-watching now for the first time since it ended. Flawless.
-
JFC was fucking flawless as well. "Look at the breasts on these women. This country is DOOMED!"
-
from the surfers that weren't real actors. The kid and the chick that ran the shop ruined the entire show with god awful acting.
-
Now I've heard everything!
-
Farina kicks all kind of ass.
-
Probably a good concept that no one will watch. Aiden Gillen of The Wire is Littlefinger for you Thrones fans.
-
and always will be. Milch could have made it happen if he really wanted. Yeah yeah I see all the posts - don't blame Milch blame HBO execs. If Farscape can be canceled before its time yet come back with a 4 hour wrap up movie, Deadwood could/should have too. HBO was thinking short term in screwing the Deadwood fans - I'll spend my hour doing something else. Show sounds stupid anyways.
-
The cast alone is enough to sign me up. Farina's turn in Snatch never fails to make me laugh. I've only seen Deadwood's first season, but that's plenty to get me aboard this one.
-
HBO was the place to go to for the best high-concept dramas for a while and I'll always be grateful for that. Rome, Deadwood and Carnivale were wonderful but if all they have to offer us now is dreary shows and one chick genre show like True Blood, I'd just as soon watch Basic Cable with shows like Mad Men, Sons of Anarchy and Breaking Bad. Heck with The Walking Dead coming to Basic, HBO's Game of Thrones series better kick butt or HBO will be dead to me.
-
But it made me feel oddly stupid. I was able to follow the general plot lines, but from minute to minute, I couldn't tell you what the hell was going on. The dialogue (which strangely carried over to John from Cincinnati) was wonderfully archaic, but more often than not it felt like a show staring speeches by Abraham Lincoln. But we need more tv like that. It challenged me to keep up, and I'm grateful for that.
-
There are at least a couple. Here's an interesting one mostly focusing on the important of the dialogue... http://litimag.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/content/extract/imp095 You might be able to access it free on a college internet connection
-
Last time was "Manhunter" so maybe this will be close.
-
Oh yeah, "Crime Story" and "Thief".
-
Not Milch.
-
It's the thing he used to work on compulsively going back decades typing the same twelve pages. It's a world he knows since growing up that speaks to his obsessions.

Can you imagine Game of Thrones, Treme, Luck, and Boardwalk Empire all on one network in the same calender year?
-
Do yourself a favor and watch, well any of his movies really, but more specifically Little Big Man and come back here and try saying that again with a straight face! I dare ya!
-
Lemme guess, Danial Day Lewis is a hack as well, right? Dude can't play a Native American for shit!
-
RedJester, I've been touting "imagine Game of Thrones, Treme, Luck, and Boardwalk Empire all being on the same network in the same year" for months now. Also, you're supposed to add Mad Men and probably Breaking Bad (though I haven't seen it yet), at least, and make it a general television greatness thing.

I foresee a "Great DVR Crisis of 2011". Even if you are just trying to DVR shows that are like top 50 ever, you're going to have unresolvable conflicts. Much chaos and gnashing of teeth will ensue.
