More RISE OF THE APES Casting!!

Merrick here...
The great Brian Cox will join the already announced James Franco, Freida Pinto, John Lithgow and Andy Serkis in Rupert Wyatt's RISE OF THE APES - 20th Century Fox's pseudo-remake, pseudo-imagining of THE PLANET OF THE APES' origin story.
Cox is in final negotiations to play the villainous owner of a primate sanctuary who runs the facility without compassion for the animals that live there. James Franco, Freida Pinto, John Lithgow and Andy Serkis star in the "Planet of the Apes" prequel that Wyatt is directing from a script by Amanda Silver and Rick Jaffa. [EDIT] A chimp named Caesar (Serkis) leads the uprising among the apes after having been raised by Lithgow and Franco's father-and-son scientist characters. [EDIT] WETA digital is rendering photo-realistic apes for the first time in the franchise, as opposed to using costumed actors.
...says TheWrap HERE. In this instance, I'm hoping "photo-realistic apes" work out better than Peter Jackson's KING KONG. Admittedly, this isn't an entirely fair comparison in many regards, but it stands as a cautionary tale nonetheless. Meanwhile, if you haven't had a chance to do so yet, consider checking out the APES Blu-Ray megaset issued not too long ago - it's a really nice compilation. CONQUEST OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (which is among the source material being reworked for RISE) has an alternate version than appeared in theaters and TV over the years, incorporating material that makes for a harder film. You can find it HERE

I didn't have the slightest problem with the look of Kong

    by Hervoyel

Not sure how that works out to being a "cautionary tale". I thought the real warning in Peter Jackson's King Kong was about letting a filmmaker who's in love with an old movie run wild with a remake. That thing was what? 12 hours long? The CGI was fine. The movie just needed an editor badly.

    by mattforce7

Kong had some of the best(even to date) CG in film history. Weta can do (99.3% of the time) NO WRONG. If anything you should be cleaning your shorts with the news WETA is handling the special effects and not, say, ILM.

    by NomoredirtyjokespleaseweareYanks

There were some average fx in that film but Kong wasn't one of them. To me it is an amazing example of the benefits of CGI. After Avatar, can anyone possibly doubt WETA. For fuck's sake Merrick... THEY FUCKING NAILED KONG!

  • July 13, 2010, 10:10 a.m. CST

    by Rufus

Merrick, clean your mouth. King Kong had excellent CGI. You and your poor imagination wouldn't even be able to think of that kind of stuff, let alone create it, yet you're here flaming WETA, possibly the best special-effects studio in the world. I hope you feel bigger, cause talking crap about kong doesn't add inches to your dick. Said.

  • July 13, 2010, 10:15 a.m. CST

    Merrick is punching the fish.

    by blackwood

The only dodgy CGI in KONG came in the stampede scene. Everything else was amazing, especial Kong himself.<p>Or maybe he's referring to 'dead space' in the movie where it gets all talky and stuff.<p>Or that Ebert is DEAD... wrong in his review.<p>Or something something meme.

  • July 13, 2010, 10:16 a.m. CST

I Agree, Kong Looked Fucking Amazing

    by FreeBeer

I mean, what did you want Kong to look like? He looked like a fucking Gorilla!! Spectacular FX work. Are you perhaps thinking of the Mighty Joe Young remake?? This is the first time I've ever read anyone criticise the special effects work on Kong, even those that gave the movie poor reviews admitted King Kong was buy a a large margin the most realistic CGI character ever rendered. I would really like a more detailed explaination as to why you view Kong as a cautionary tale.

  • July 13, 2010, 10:16 a.m. CST

What the fuck does "PHOTO REALISTIC" MEAN??!!

    by BP_drills_america_a_new_asshole

Its a bullshit term. It gets mentioned to add kudos to an effects heavy project but its just standard CGI. Wasn't avatar meant to be photo realistic? I didn't see no photo realistic shots .

    by BP_drills_america_a_new_asshole

Jackson's Kong was flawed, but this continual lambasting is getting old. The main thing wrong with it was the length - it was horribly, horribly edited. If a good 30 mins were taken out its on par with ROTK.

I was haphazardly flicking through my foxtel and I came upon Year One. Now, I have heard all the negatives about this film....and believe me, as a man who if he had to choose a religion, would choose the holy temple of Kubrick, this is hard to say. <p> I don't get the hatred. <p> Hey, I hate Bay's Transformers 2 as much as anyone.... but I still dig Bad Boys 2. It harkens back to the days of Rambo 2 and Commando for it's sheer dedication to well-executed violence. I guess even a troll like MJ's corpse can be right some of the time. People like RPLocke aren't however. They are just fuckin dumb. Where was I? <p> Oh yes, Year One. A movie that goes fine with a six pack of VB. I fucking laughed my ass off. Yeah sure, compared to Groundhog Day Ramis's direction was lackluster, but it suited the fucked up material. It reminded me of Billy Madison or Dumb and Dumber. Terribly directed films that are still piss-funny. It's beyond weird that I hold the iconography of a cynical 80's toy cartoon beyond reproach yet comedy gets a pass. <p> Fuck. What do I know, my favorite comedy is Ace Ventura 2(followed by Peter Sellers The Party) and I adore Hudson Hawk. It's an eclectic taste.

    Monkey Love!

    by Arcangel2020

I was a HUGE fan of the Original Planet of The Apes Movie series (I grew up during the time of their original releases in the Theaters but was either to young to see them or my sisters wouldn't take me to see I had to settle for when they first aired on the CBS Network), the Live action as well as the Animated saturday morning show...I also really enjoyed Tim Burtons re-boot AND Peter Jackson's version of King Kong too (My favorite scenes in the movie are the Bugs fight scene and when Kong fights the T-rexes!) Soooooo...I am keeping my fingers crossed that this new "Apes" themed/re-boot/re-imagining-re-whatever..turns out to be a good thing and makes those of us who love good Monkey movies proud (If's gonna have Frida Pinto in it which is a VERY good thimg in my humble opinion!! :) )

...I'm a little late to the party here, but I'm with you completely on Kong. 'Cept he shoulda cut at least 45 minutes out of it, including every slow-motion scene and everything with the Jaime Bell. And most of the Depression-era stage setting. And...well, okay: at least an hour.

  • July 13, 2010, 11:03 a.m. CST

Length was an issue due to bad dialogue/story

    by Flip63Hole

I still stand by it being one of the worst films made in this century, and the CG work looks cartoonish. The actors and cartoon monkey never shared the same space.

  • July 13, 2010, 11:04 a.m. CST

Kong was fine if u spread it over two days

    by mattforce7

mattforce - flip those numbers around

    by Hey_Kobe_Tell_Me_How_My_Ass_Tastes

52 minutes could have been cut, then you have a good story. The CGI of Kong was excellent but the movie sucked T.Rex balls because Jackson got full of himself a Jack Black can't act and was horribly miscast.

    by Monolith_Jones

And he was terrible. The movie had one thing going for it: Naomi Watts. Everything else was silly.

  • July 13, 2010, 11:17 a.m. CST

Yeah, KONG '05 could have lost an hour.

    by blackwood

No question. I also watched it again not too long ago; I liked it originally, and liked it quite a bit more five years later. The good is great, the bad is lazy and sloppy but a few eye rolls and it doesn't actually offend. I agree with most of Destry's edits, and I'll add: the confrontation on the Empire State Building. It needed to be cut down. Instead of being an exciting, emotional climax, it became excessive, lost in its own self importance. The climax could have lost fifteen minutes (it went on for half an hour) and been punchier.<p>PS I really hope they retitle this film before release. CAESAR is a much, much, much more interesting title. The previews will sell it as an APES film. This title sounds creatively bankrupt. This title is the result of boardroom decision-making by people who think money is far more credible that creative instinct. A film about sentient Apes called CAESAR? Could be a classic. RISE OF THE APES? Silver Surfer is laughing at you.

    Kong and Apes

    by Biggie Kaiju

I gotta agree the CGI on Kong in the remake was excellent. But that first hour of the movie was brutal. And Jackson definitely botched Kong's big entrance. Hell, his intro in the '76 version was awesome. The music in that movie rocked the shit. I'm a huge "Apes" fan, and the casting sounds good so far. Doesn't really sound like "Conquest" very much, other then the whole revolt thing. But Franco, Pinto, Lithgow, and Cox (there's a mouthful) are all capable of solid work. Can't wait to see the first leaked picture of Caesar.

  • July 13, 2010, 11:33 a.m. CST

It wasn't so much the dinos in kong that made that scene look ba

    by RedBull_Werewolf

It was the terrible intergration of the humans, it literally looked like they were running infront of rear projected screen. The dino's themself looked good enough and if the animators had done better shading on the actors and the environment it would have been passable. But thats a small mark on an other wise great CGI performance in Kong '05. Kong himself is beautiful and the way he interacted with naomi was brilliant. for anyone to say Kong didn't look real then they are clearly retarded

Merrick you owe us an explanation

    by Screwbini

Just what was wrong with Jackson's CGI Kong? If the CGI apes looks that good then the movie will have a tremendous leg up. Of course the direction, the acting, and most of all the script will need to live up to the special effects.

  • July 13, 2010, 11:44 a.m. CST

Best thing about the '76 Kong...

    by Blue_Demon

was the music, I agree, Biggie Kaiju. The great John Barry gave us an awesome score. I have it on my iPod.<p>Now...regarding the cgi in P.J.'s King Kong: There was nothing wrong with Kong himself. Holy Jesus man, did you see his eyes? That was as close to a living creature as we're going to get with cgi. I'm a diehard practical effects fan, but if it's going to be cgi, I say you can't get better than WETA.

    by JayLenoTookMyJob

...Jack Black, a much-too-long running time, and too much schmaltz (the ice skating in Cental Park scene?) killed the picture. Still, CGI has that damn "fuzziness" and the only flick I've seen where it didn't have color issues was Avatar, which went almost too far in the other direction (over-saturated primary colors as opposed to murky grays).

In defense of Merrick and what he means about "KIng Kong"

I think I know what Merrick means about Jackson's version of Kong and how that also applies to the apes in the Planet of the Apes series. Many of us "old school" film fans that grew up on these movies never really thought of the apes in POTA as really being gorillas, chimps and orangutans. They were a hybrid of humans and apes, not just because actors in make-up were playing them, but because they were fantasy characters. I think the same school of thought was applied to King Kong. Willis O'Brien could have animated Kong as a real gorilla, but he chose not too. O'Brien was a student of nature and anatomy, but he chose to portray Kong as a fantasy character that walked on two feet like a human and was far more expressive than a real gorilla. The 70s Kong was just Rick Baker in a gorilla suit, be he also chose not to slump over and run on all fours like a real gorilla, but instead to walk on two feet. I've always believed Kong was a fantasy creature, not a giant gorilla, and seeing him portrayed as a very realistic gorilla in Jackosn's films lessened the imaginative nature of the characer to me in spite of the fact that the special effects used to realize him were perfectly amazing. I also see the POTA characters as John Chambers created them, not as real primates being forced to wear clothing. I don't want to put these words in Merrick's mouth (maybe he will respond), but I think that's what he's getting at.

The best thing about 70's Kong was the hotness of Jessica Lange. She looked completely bone-able.<p> As for the Jackson version of Kong, I had a tepid reaction, after my first viewing; but I bought a cheap copy a year or so later and, upon my second viewing, I enjoyed it a lot more. I had a better handle, on what the pacing was going to be and I really enjoyed how P.J. styled it. A solid 4*'s out of 5.

    More idiocy from Merrick

    by rbatty024

Jackson's Kong was hardly unassailable, but the title character was without a doubt a highlight of that film. Of course, this is typical Merrick. He makes snide comments without backing them up (probably because he is either inarticulate or doesn't have a point beyond sniping). Strange that the biggest troll on this website is one of the contributors.

    by BadMrWonka

you know if you make any kind of CG dinosaurs, you're gonna be compared to Jurassic Park, an I swear, the brontosaurus stampede scene looks WORSE than Jurassic Park, more than a decade later. just ridiculous.<p>Kong looked decent, most of the time, but the other CG in the movie was just pathetic. way too overused and unconvincing.

  • July 13, 2010, 6:04 p.m. CST

Rise of the Apes is a shit idea...

    by Baryonyx

...and Jackson's Kong was an overlong miss-fire. Weta poorly composited the actors with the CGI in Kong: during the sauropod stampede the actors look like they'd been cut out with scissors and stuck into the scene. Only the insect/ravine sequence is truly gripping and well-handled. And don't get me started on the 'Kong vs the three V-Rex dinos swinging on vines' scene. Utterly, utterly preposterous action that would look far-fetched in a video game. I know that nobody is supposed to like it, but give me the 70s version of King Kong (with the man in a suit, the giant rubber snake & the John Barry score) any day.

    by SminkyPinky

While it might have had some very dodgey compositing during the dino chase, Kong himself was a goddamn marvel. It looked, felt and breathed like a real gorilla only 20 times larger. It exuded true character and emotion and was as much a milestone as Gollum or Davy Jones. Jackson's Kong was not just a movie monster or character. He was designed, performed and rendered as a true animal with all the grace, character and nobility gorillas possess. Dude, please check yourself, or at least popular opinion, when writing.

    The '05 Kong...

    by Baryonyx

...looks like nicely-colored computer graphics, always. There's something 'special effects-y' about the gorilla. I think that the ape in the Mighty Joe Young remake felt more 'real' somehow. Jackson's Kong is better than the fuzzball in King Kong Versus Godzilla, I'll admit, though I think I preferred The Mighty Peking Man to Kong '05...

  • July 13, 2010, 6:55 p.m. CST

    Peter's Kong is seriously flawed

    by performingmonkey

Though the quality of the CGI had nothing to do with its failings. Just check out the New York scenes, utterly magical effects work both practical and CGI. The casting...I disagree with those saying Jack Black was miscast or gave a bad performance. He did great with what he was given and he and Adrien Brody played well across from each other, something that Jackson hardly capitalized on. Naomi Watts had exactly the right look for Ann but it's like there's no real interaction between her and anyone else in the whole movie. The stuff with her and Kong was pretty good, of course, but there's zero chemistry between her and Adrien Brody's Jack and with the scenes with her and Jack Black she hardly gives him anything back. The performances are so key in drawing us into a big CGI setup like this overall they were mostly boring turns with Andy Serkis as the cook and the guy who played Bruce Baxter giving us the odd moment of life in there for the first half of the movie. The script and direction are Kong '05's biggest flaws.

    by BP_drills_america_a_new_asshole

in Kong 05. A little ropey CG here and there, but I really believed in that hostile environment. All the scenes prior and after Skull island should have been trimmed like the bush of a 70s Playboy model should be trimmed. Those scenes were just baggage that killed the film.

Jackson wanted to cut 20 mins from Kong

    by Turd_Has_Risen_From_The_Grave

The studio didn't let him because they wanted the film out by Christmas 2005. He showed them a rough cut and they told him to just go ahead with that. What you're watching in the theatrical version is actually a rough cut but with polished effects.<p>And then, of course, he gave us a further extended DVD cut with added scenes which, unlike the LOTR extended editions, was completely pointless (although the new swamp sequence is pretty good). <p>Despite people's objections to filmmakers fiddling with their movies long after the fact, I'd be all for Jackson going back to the drawing board a few years down the line and creating a definitive version of the movie - polishing up the rushed effects in the bronto stampede, getting rid of the excessive slow-motion and go-nowhere sub-plots, and tightening up the pre-Skull Island stuff. Hacking off about 30 minutes but maybe adding back some of the deleted action scenes (including Kong fighting the army at the base of the Empire State Building). There is a very good movie buried within Kong. That said, even the existing film is far better than anything we've seen so far this year save Toy Story 3.

  • July 13, 2010, 7:45 p.m. CST

It needs more than 20 minutes cut, though

    by Tall_Boy66

Like, take out a full hour then we're talkin'. The pointlessness of the pre-Skull Island and the general meandering of the subplots are the film's near-fatal flaws. Hack the movie down to literally just the monkey and the gal and nothing with Jimmy and that other guy and we got a flick in there.

Oh yeah. Forgot about Jessica Lange hotness.

    by Biggie Kaiju

She was pretty smoking in that wet sacrificial garb. Another sucky detail about Kong '05; the 'three T-Rex scene' was kind of botched by having him holding/tossing Ann the entire time. He's fighting one-handed pitching this screaming blonde all over the place. That didn't quite... work. The Empire State finale is pretty fucking great. In the theater that shit was like you were up there.

    by ZodNotGod

Kong was fine even at 3 hours, far better than that hobbit bullshit. However, an hour or maybe 45 min cut from it, would help immensely. The lame sub-plots, with the Captain and the steward, stowaway, whatever he/it is- dump it. Just concentrate on Watts, Black and the Kong. Once Kong gets to New York, the film is flawless, especially the scene on the ice where he and the gal are having a bonding moment before the cocksuckers show up.

    Kong Jackson's best?? Ape Taint!!

    by Behemoth

Kong is Jackson with a raging case of Lucas-itis. Too far up his own ass to see and think clearly any more. The bugs scene rivals anything from the SW prequels in its sheer moronicity. Guys shooting bugs off other guys with MACHINE GUNS. Are you effing kidding me? The Flintstones bronto races? The film was horribly edited, ridiculously long and only made the original look even greater. I will definitely give tons of credit to the CGI Kong, though. He looked great. But I hope someone's given Jackson the Lucasitis antidote by now, or those Hobbit films will be full of guys hanging off ledges with one finger, multiple orcs getting stabbed in the gut just before delivering a death blow and an infinite number of closeups with people saying, "Saruman."

    Kong visually was awesome

    by MurderMostFowl

story wise it was a snoozefest, but I think the actual CGI was near perfect. That said, I thought the Burton Apes were really well done too, so maybe I am not a good judge of monkey business.

What's with the CGI bashing trend these days?

    by Math1303

I'll admit that sometimes CGI is over used for things that could have been done practically, but CGI is looking better then it ever was. There are some good company giving us awesome effects. Not just Weta and ILM (why are you bashing ILM, they are one of the best VFX company out there giving us incredible effects show after show), but even smaller company are delivering amazing effect shots and a lot of people are working hard to deliver those shots. VFX work is one of the thoughest most time consuming jobs. Especially after movies like Avatar. Now everyone expects that high level of effect work and people around the world have to put in so much extra effort to try and live up to the ridiculously high expectations and they have to do so in a fraction of the time and budget as schedule become tighter and tighter. There are some crappy CGI that always creep their way into every movie, but it's unfair to blame the VFX studios as most of these bad effects comes from bad calls from the clients/directors/producers/studio people that request an effect that's just plain wrong and can't work in a million years. VFX studios deliver what they are asked to deliver. The clients can do whatever they want thanks to CGI, they become spoilled and start asking for stupid changes and often fucks up the hard work of a lot of talented people because they know they can afford too and most bad CGI that makes their way to the screen comes from these bad calls. Plus, a lot of studio plays with the shot that they receive. They do color correction that don't hold up, crank the gammas or contrast and can completly fuck up a originally amazing looking CGI shot. I'm just really sad that the hard working CGI comunity get so little love. And it's often just a couple bad shots that gives the rest of the workload a bad rep. It's like they say, your chain is as strong as your weakest link. So much can go wrong down the pipeline. I just think people are unfair about all this. Look at old 80's movies and how cheap the effects looked. No one was complaining back then. Now that we are getting used to top notch work, we've becomed spoiled little brats that always want filet mignon instead of enjoying a respectfully good rib steak.

Talkbackers CGI because they're aging 70s manchildren

    by Tall_Boy66

Who watched Star Wars when they were, like, 8 years old or something and it was THE BEST EFFECTS THEY HAVE EVER SEEN!! So they're in denial that if CGI is in a movie IZ NOT PRACTICAL REAL MODUL AND THEREFOREZ SHIT!!! Listening to a AICN Talkbacker (and most AICN writers) for a rational opinion is like trying to find a needle in a pile of needles.
