SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

Have Gun Will Travel: Four Season Pack collects the first two-thirds of the six-season Western set mostly during the post-Civil-War “Deadwood” era. It’s a first-rate series -- from the days of black-and-white half-hour TV dramas -- following an improbably urbane, soft-spoken, well-funded and peace-loving San Francisco mercenary who is great at hitting things and people with bullets from a great distance. In his home at San Francisco’s Hotel Carlton he dresses like Sam Clemens; when he’s on the job outside Cheyenne or Tombstone or San Antonio he dresses like Johnny Cash.

I love this series for the same reason I love “Justified”: it’s built around a smart, funny, badass Stetson-sporting good guy I’d follow anywhere.

“Mission: Impossible” creator Bruce Gellar, “Star Trek” creator Gene Roddenberry, “Dirty Harry” creator Harry Julian Fink and “Wild Bunch” writer-director Sam Peckinpah all scripted episodes during these first four seasons.

They packed a lot of story into a half hour in those days (episodes ran a full 26 minutes) and a lot of episodes into a season (39 episodes in each of the first three seasons; 38 in the fourth).

Dragnet 1968 contains the second season of the third of five “Dragnet” series. Those five were:

1) The radio series with Jack Webb and Raymond Burr (1949-57);
2) The TV series with Jack Webb and Ben Alexander (1951-59);
3) The TV series with Jack Webb and Harry Morgan (1967-1970);
4) The TV series with Jeff Osterhage and Bernard White (1989-1991);
5) The TV series with Ed O’Neill and Ethan Embry (2003-04).

(If you count the big-screen 1954 “Dragnet” starring Webb and Richard Boone and its 1987 sequel starring Dan Aykroyd and Tom Hanks, I guess one could argue the late-sixties is actually the fourth of six “Dragnet” series.)

Even though the Harry Morgan version was on only four seasons, hot teen actress Heather Menzies (a star of “The Sound of Music” and the future Mrs. Robert Urich, whose name is slang for the menstrual cramps) appeared on it as five different girls, many of them mixed up with dirty hippies who had no time for Sgt. Joe Friday’s “jive.”

Confusing fact #1: Despite this set’s “1968” title, it actually contains all episodes that aired between September 1967 and March 1968.

Confusing fact #2: This “1968” set contains the movie-length pilot titled “Dragnet 1966” (95:38), which first aired in 1969.

Confusing fact #3: While Joe Friday doesn’t bat a eye when a white girl complains her baby-daddy has taken to boning an “oriental” girl, he loses his shit when a suspect drops an n-bomb.

Another extra on the 1968 set is “Jack Webb: The Man Behind Badge 714” (26:06), featuring interviews with Webb biographer Daniel Moyer and actors Peggy Webber, Herb Ellis, Tom Williams and Jackie Loughery.

    A shitty remake of season 4's finale, big fucking deal. Way to send off the series. Who gives a damn about a stupid movie series.

    Can you do away with the whole "VASTLY ENCHEAPENED" thing?

    by trazadone

    I know you're trying to be precious but it just fills me with murderous rage for some reason. I get the same feeling when Harry begs for "prezzies". Shudder.

    I WANT A FULL COLUMBO BOX SET DAMN IT!!!!!!

    by fat_rancor_keeper

    ....just like that cool cigar box set released overseas with ALL seasons & TV movies. I don't even think the final TV movies from Columbo have been released on DVD yet in America.

    Ugh. What's with WB?

    by jaka

    Why can't they get the Looney Tunes releases right? What is so difficult about doing giant retrospective sets that include EVERYTHING from the characters we love. Prices wouldn't even matter. If they could get these dame sets RIGHT we would buy them. Anyway, I haven't seen the list of which shorts are on the Bugs TWO DISC set, but I bet you more than half (if not nearly ALL) of them have previously been released on the Golden Collections. Total ass!Great price on those 4 Film Favorite sets. Wal-Mart has had them for $12.99 for a while now. So it's clear who Amazon is competing with. Was anybody else as disappointed with The Pacific as I was? I found it incredibly boring. Not 1/10 as good as Band of Brothers.Why does Julianna Margulies look weird on that cover. She's beautiful in real life, but somethings off in that pic.
