Ain't It Cool News (

Mike Judge Outlining 30 New Episodes Of BEAVIS AND BUTTHEAD For MTV??

I am – Hercules!!’s Kenny Herzog quotes an anonymous source who indicates “Beavis and Butthead” creator Mike Judge is “outlining” 30 new episodes of the series for MTV. The last episode of the series, “Beavis and Butt-head Are Dead,” was cablecast on MTV Nov. 28, 1997. Judge has since been busy directing movies (“Office Space,” “Idiocracy,” “Extract”) and creating animated series for broadcast TV (“King of the Hill,” “The Goode Family”). MTV execs have recently indicated an interest in moving the channel away from reality shows like the cancelled "The Hills" and back toward scripted programming like the recently greenlit TV version of "Teen Wolf." Featuring the most music videos played on MTV in years

    by Tall_Boy66

And Judge should totally age them, in fact I think he's made vague allusions to if he ever revisited Beavis and Butthead, they wouldn't be high-schoolers anymore.

    About freaking time!

    by Atomica

I swear i'm a goddamned psychic. I told my wife about 6 months ago it was time for a Beavis and Butthead revival. Esp since Judge's movie career is, well you saw EXTRACT! And the genius of King of the Hill being over, and Goode Family not taking's a good career move. Plus, there is just SO fucking much to make fun of now! Bieber! Gaga! Hanson! (Still) I hope to shit this happens! Viva la Butthead!!!

  • July 8, 2010, 12:22 a.m. CST

    by Atomica

Are you serious? It's inconceivable to me that someone could watch the show and not find humor. Well, you could always watch paint dry. I hear that's fun. :P

  • July 8, 2010, 12:23 a.m. CST

    Bad choice of networks though

    by cookepuss

Probably not much choice if MTV actually owns full IP rights. Still, MTV is irrelevant nowadays.

That's not to say that there isn't great music now. There is. Lots of it, if you knew where to look. However, MTV is a relic of a bygone era.

When B&B started in 1993, MTV was still largely about the music videos because... well.... music videos still mattered. In a world that's moved on to using the internet and social networking to promote artists, music videos aren't the "it" thing anymore.

B&B's stoner schtick would definitely still work today, especially if they push the boundaries a bit more. If they softball it with easy jokes and played out cliches, the revival won't work. B&B were cool back in the 90s because they were fucked up enough for teens to love `em and parents to hate `em.

Regardless, I think that it's on a network that's no longer about music and no longer about quality. I also have concerns about Judge's own personal ability to make it work. Last time we saw them on TV, a couple of years back, the writing was stale & tired while Judge's Butthead voice seemed... different - and not for the better. Like puberty suddenly hit.

Anyway, if true, it's a mixed blessing. More B&B = Good. MTV = Bad.

That would be Clerks 2, ten/fifteen years later kind of thing. See them as wastoid thirtysomethings with no life still making fun of crap on tv and raising hell. ;)

Anyone else afraid this is going to be another Ren & Stimpy fias

    by cookepuss

Let's say that MTV mattered for a second. I've got a huge anti-boner for bringing this property back. I mean, Ren & Stimpy enjoyed a brief revival and that was a monumental disaster. If done right, a B&B revival could be a good thing. If done for the quick cash grab, this could be a nightmare. You really have to wonder what other reason Mike Judge would have for bringing them back, especially considering how very 90s B&B were.

Judge's been sort of hit & miss for me too in his post-B&B career. King of the Hill started off pretty solidly and ended up in Simpsons territory, where the characters stopped evolving. Then, Extract & Idiocracy were both good, but uneven, while The Goode Family feels forced & sloppy. Judge is legendary for a lot, but He's not out of gas yet, but - at 47 - he's lost some of his bite.

  • July 8, 2010, 12:51 a.m. CST

    by Sonny_Williams

Sometimes people need to go back a bit in order to move forward. Hope this is the case with Judge. I just didn't find a lot to love in IDIOCRACY or EXTRACT. OFFICE SPACE was 11 years ago, and that's the last time Judge really blew my skirt up (except for the occasional outstanding KotH ep.) I do hope he's aged them into at least their 20s, working some slackerly jobs befitting their continuing lack of ambition. And thanks to the reality glut on TV, they'll have endless fodder for their mocking pleasure. Hope Judge can recapture his edge with this.

  • July 8, 2010, 8:08 a.m. CST

    by adml_shake

This can't be happening. MTV is only interested in shitty low IQ reality TV. If it's not about some skanky group of bitches or some in the closet urban white boy thug wannabe then it won't get any ratings on their network. The fan-base MTV had when they aired shows like B&B all tuned out a long ass time ago.

I recently got a little nostalgic for B&B and watched an old VHS someone made for me back in the day since I had no MTV when the show first started. I've read that Judge is still proud of BB and has never closed the door on bringing them back. Either still as teens or adults, Butthead would have some crappy sales job and Beavis would be a landscaper. And if they did watch MTV I'm sure they would fight over Snooki, but they would probably have to end up watch something like VH1 Classics since they do still play videos some of the time. I was also at Target this week and saw a Butthead as uncle sam t-shirt. So it seems that the marketing is gearing back up which seems like a positive sign that the show really will come back. And I showed an episode to my 12 year old nephew, he thought it sucked.

  • July 8, 2010, 12:25 p.m. CST

Judge quote for older Beavis and Butt-head

    by Tall_Boy66

From wiki, which is sourced from somewhere else. "During an interview for Collider on August 25, 2009, Judge told them, "I like to keep the door open on Beavis and Butt-Head, because it's my favorite thing that I've ever done. It's the thing I'm most proud of." However, he also added, "Another movie... the problem is it takes a year and half, two years, two and a half years - maybe - to do that right. And that's a pretty strong level of commitment. I'm going to look at that again. That comes up every three years." One of his ideas is bringing back the characters as old men, instead of teenagers. "I kind of think of them as being either 15 or in their 60s," he said. "I wouldn't mind doing something with them as these two dirty old men sitting on the couch." Judge added that he wouldn't completely ignore the time that has passed in between. "At one point I thought Butt-Head might do okay on some really low-level sales job. Beavis might be landscaping."" I think a 60 year old man Beavis and Butt-head would be a funny one-shot capper to the series, but I think revisiting them now in their late 20s/early 30s would be great and resonate with the audience that originally watched it. Bringing them back as high school students would be cool and nostalgic, bringing them back as adults would be genius.

That's what I'm hoping too, man. But the reality of it is (no pun...) we're the minority. Or at least MTV thinks we are. If they got back to ... hmm, I dunno MUSIC on MTV I'd be estatic. I can't stand watching videos on YouTube and the like. MTV2 was awesome and they ruined that too. But at the very least, I think we can hope for a genuine movement away from reality shows. Just like boybands and pop princesses before it, I'm hoping this reality craze is coming to the end of its days. And I agree with others here: The video mocking was the best part of B&B. Don't know how they'll handle that these days.

Judge in Cinema & 120 min. & That Metal Show

    by ToMonicker

You know, I always seem to catch it after it's already played out, but each time I catch one of his movies, I'm like, why haven't I seen this before?
I've watched occasionally VH1's classic 120min. and it's sort of nostalgic, but then you notice there's no interviews with the band, etc. and it just seems even more stale and pathetic retreading. But I wonder, and maybe someone can tell me, if there are any genre specific music shows anymore?
That Metal Show is kind of like that, a throwback- sans music vids, but it's almost as dumb as Beavis & Butthead(I could totally see them crackin' on it), and pathetic as well.

Mike Judge gotta eat, I suppose.

    by TedKordLives

I just think that his talents would be better used somewhere else, even if this is the thing that he's proudest of.

    "My liver!"

    by Somerichs

"Kick me in the Jimmy! Do it again!" "Hello? Ahm lookin fer some Spanish Tile? Anybody there? Hello?" (Butthead, while watching the video for "Sober" by Tool) "Heh heh heh, If I could move my hand that fast, I'd never leave the house." In case you can't tell, I'm of the opinion that Beavis and Butthead might very well be the best thing about the entire decade of the 90s... :)

    Mike...have you seen MTV recently?

    by Linguo_IS_Dead

Don't waste your time with your foolish, "scripted" television. Unless it's got Italian douchebags or ugly, orange chicks, they don't want it.

    Love seeing the quotes here

    by Uke_Crazy

I'm laughing just reading them. I started to say 'em out loud in character voices, but my wife gave me a look like I'm crazy. "It is in these hills that Juan Valdez and his trusty goat gather coffee beans every morning."

    Just watched idiocracy last night

    by INWOsuxRED

It would make a nice series, although nobody would advertise on it even if it had good ratings.

Beavis: Hey Butt-head, is it normal for the inside of your bunghole to itch?
Butt-head: Beavis, it's not even normal to ask.
Beavis: [watching a video with a girl in a tub] She doesn't wanna get up because she's got morning wood.
Butt-head: Uh... Beavis? I hope you were joking.
Beavis: [long pause] Uh... Oh yeah. That's pretty funny.
BRING BACK B&B!!!

  • July 9, 2010, 1:45 p.m. CST

Would be funny if he properly ages them...

    by thecomedian

So it's Bevis and Butthead in their late 20's/early 30s still living at home like losers, fucking with Anderson(who I hope they bring back inspite of "King of The Hill")and trying to make lives for themselves. That would be funny.

  • July 9, 2010, 2:54 p.m. CST

But Extract really sucked, so I hope that's not a harbinger of anything. Would love to see a methed out, pregnant Daria now dating Beavis.

    Videos and The Maxx

    by Jaka

Hells yes bring back The Maxx! Except, the comic was finite, too. Kieth would have to write new stories. Or I guess they could film more from the original comic book series, but it seems a bit late for that.
Mtv and VH1 show big blocks of videos from the middle of the night to the early morning. I've even seen some interesting stuff recently. If they would stop showing a GagGag video every hour I might watch more.

You and I might be the only ones who thought Greg the Bunny (the short lived genius show from whence Warren the Ape first debuted) was brilliant, and the lower common denominator couldn't handle the concept of a puppets as real people...I got it and it was hilarious-

    I just worry that...

    by Bob Loblaw Law Blog

MTV would do something stupid like have a live Twitter feed during the show on the side or bottom, or fade out to have one of their lame-ass hosts introduce new B&B episodes in clips.
But, I'd watch it if they came back.

Would rather see more King of the Hill

    by solanine

I loved Beavis and Butthead as much as the next kid that grew up in the 90s, but the show just isn't relevant anymore. I'm sure that I'd watch it and enjoy it, but King of the Hill is the better Judge show and deserves at least another season or two to finish the series in a real way, since Fox decided to fuck over everyone not named Seth McFarlane.

    Liquid Television

    by The Gipper

Don't forget, B&B started out as a short on Liquid Television. Personally, I liked Jack Mack and Rad Boy even more. They were 10x crazier than B&B -- they stole beer from a convenience store by walking straight out a plateglass window.

    Yeh, built in audience

    by Bash_Branigan

Of course as I was typing that I typed "guilt in audience". Maybe I should have left that; it's definitely on the guilty pleasure list for me.
