Harry's DVD Picks & Peeks: 1st wk of July 2010: Buster Keaton, Ray Harryhausen, Gamera, Hallenbeck and Noir!!!
Hey folks, Harry here with another Tuesday of DVD PICKS & PEEKS. There’s some seriously beloved stuff on the list this week – and I don’t want to keep ya from it. As usual the pics and titles are linked over to AMAZON where you can learn more on the title in question, and purchase it if it fancies you. If you do follow one of the links and purchase something, part of that price goes to help support this column. And for that, I thank you. Here ya go, with the greatest Fantasy Film of all time…
Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS (Blu Ray)
In my opinion, the single most perfect fantasy film ever created is JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS. I’ve seen this film countless times. I’ve seen the various effects sequences even more so. But to separate out the visual effects, which are flat out masterful, by Ray Harryhausen is a disservice to this Fantasy Masterpiece. I’ve read the original myths and frankly, this is better. For me, Todd Armstrong & Nancy Kovack were put on this earth to play Jason & Medea – and my entire life, I’ve been pissed that there was never a tragic sequel that continued that great story. But relieved too. That tale isn’t as “family friendly” as JASON & THE ARGONAUTS, but this is enough. From the Goddess Pussy Galore to her husband played to note perfection by Niall MacGinnis, From Nigel Green’s amazingly unique take on HERCULES to Douglas Wilmer’s cowardly Pelias, to Jack Gwillim’s epic KING AEETES… the casting is perfect. Who doesn’t love Laurence Naismith’s Argos or that evil fucking Gary Raymond’s Acastus. Hell, even the blind man Phineas by Patrick Troughton… is note perfect. Then there’s Bernard Herrmann’s score. Jesus God… How can you discuss that masterful score? Whenever I get in my dad’s Dodge – I see the Dodge Ram… and my brain instantly belts out that majestic “Sailing/Adventure Beginning” music of Herrmann’s. Bombastic and powerful, it stirs some ancient need to be playing an unknown game with the God’s for their amusement. Jan Read & Beverley Cross’ script is note perfect. Wilkie Cooper may not have won a single award for his Cinematography over his career – but I love it. I love the daring use of color, light and shadow in this along with his work in 7TH VOYAGE OF SINBAD, 3 WORLDS OF GULLIVER, MYSTERIOUS ISLAN, JASON, FIRST MEN IN THE MOON and ONE MILLION YEARS, B.C. Then there’s the hero of the production, that isn’t often singled out. Alfred Cox. The Sound Editor. But man, as much as I love Ray Harryhausen’s astonishing work, every time Talos moves – I want to hug Alfred. Ray’s animation of a gigantic moving bronze statue is brilliant, but Cox’s metallic squealing causes me to shift in my seat – sending a signal right down my spine. The sound of the Hydra, the sound of the Skeletons being vomited from the earth from the seeds of the Hydra’s teeth… I love the sound of this film. Lastly and most importantly, there’s RAY HARRYHAUSEN – who serves as much more than “the effects guy” – generally conceiving of the project, working as a Producer with the great Charles Schneer. His drawings, sculptures and vision permeates everything. Director Don Chaffey perfectly fit into this – his direction over the performances were the strongest in any Harryhausen film. You are not a film geek without this movie. You’re just someone that likes a lot of movies. JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS is THE FANTASY FILM!

STEAMBOAT BILL, JR. (Blu Ray)
The other day when I put this in I was just in a great mood. It was about 4am, I’d had a great night of film with some friends – still a bit high on that buzz one gets watching movies with great company – and I figured. Yeah, let’s watch some Keaton. I have Buster Keaton’s life mask above the doorway exiting my house, along with a few others. And when I’m put to the question about KEATON vs CHAPLIN, I’m a self-admitted sentimentalist… so of course I say Chaplin. But the reality is – Keaton awes me. I watch in utter awe of his majesty on screen. Watching him in the last half of STEAMBOAT BILL, JR – well, the only thing you can do afterwards, and that is put it on again, which I did. KINO has done a brilliant transfer on this. The image is so crisp and sharp that you’ll just be amazed by what you don’t see. Like any manner of safety. Nothing looks safe here. You’ll find your heart skipping beats because you know… this is all really happening. And it rules. It rules so much. Here’s what’s on this amazing Blu Ray:
This definitive Blu-ray edition contains both versions of STEAMBOAT BILL, JR. the Buster Keaton Estate version and the Killiam Shows Archive version each mastered from archival 35mm materials. All new Special Features include: Complete alternate version of Steamboat Bill, Jr., comprised entirely of variant takes and camera angles, Music by The Biograph Players presented in DTS-HD, Master Audio 5.1, Organ score by Lee Erwin, Piano score by William Perry, Documentary on the making of the film, Stills Gallery, Why They Call Him Buster (a montage of pratfalls), and Two vintage recordings of the folk song Steamboat Bill .

THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO (Blu Ray)
I received a standard def screener of THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO about a month ago. I’ve watched it about 5 times now. I love it. I love a good mystery, suspense, thriller. When those three genres are properly mixed, you can be so deliciously enraptured, almost more than in any other kind of genre. I love films of this type. Like SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, BASIC INSTINCT, PRESUMED INNOCENT, FRANTIC, DON’T LOOK NOW, INSOMNIA (the original), KLUTE… well, you get the picture. The modern, adult version of the Film Noirs, Hitchcock style flicks… well, they’re cruder – in the sense that you will see nudity and really nasty things, but hey… That’s what floats the boat of our decadent society these days. Now, this was my introduction to the whole GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO ‘story’ – and I’m in lust with the titular actress. And yes, that definitely makes me a perv. But knowing is have the battle. I will be reading the novel on my trip to the FAMOUS MONSTERS convention, because I am very curious what about the book has everybody that I know that’s read it and seen this film… kinda become dismissive of this fantastic film. And by reading and discovering that, I hope to get very very pumped for Fincher’s upcoming adaptation. One of my favorite films of this year thus far.

GAMERA VS. BARUGON
Weekend before last, my nephew came over to spend the weekend with me. It is interesting being an Uncle. I feel a lot of responsibility to get him excited about a host of cool things. Give him a sample of things that he gets to consider in his quest to discover more of everything. That is why I buy him classic literature, eclectic music of all variety upon his iPod, continue to feed his love of Science, classic boy stuff like Scouting & camping… And as you would expect… I give him a great variety film to like, hate, love and talk about. I tend to introduce things in order of how I discovered things – just to see how he reacts. But of course my sister introduced him to things I probably would have held off for Teenage years… But I feel starting off a kid with EVIL DEAD 2… well, it makes showing that same kid the B&W Universal Monsters… harder.
Well, this particular weekend I decided to introduce my nephew to GAMERA VS BARUGON. Turns out that, although I’ve shown him the classic GODZILLAs (not the more modern ones, not yet. Maybe sometime soon) – this would be his first experience with Gamera… as it was for me, ages ago on a fateful afternoon on Cable. THOUGH – this lucky rat bastard was getting it in its original language with subtitles… and I just fucking love that this kid is reading fast enough to watch foreign flicks with subtitles – and he’s jazzed he can do it. But as a result, his future has things like CHINESE GHOST STORY in it.
Basic review, I wish to god this was a Blu-Ray. As a DVD, it’s as sharp as they get, it is pretty much a pristine original language with English subtitles. The film is bliss – and I’m happy to report that my nephew thinks Flying Turtles are the best kind. About 5 minutes in, he asks me, “Uncle Harry who would win in a fight, Godzilla or Gamera?” All too easy… heh heh heh.

A SINGLE MAN
SINGLE MAN is a fantastic film. And I find myself wondering if Tom Ford will direct another film. I certainly hope he will, but at the same time I can imagine this simply being THE FILM he had to make. Its success as one of the best films of last year, pretty much guarantees we’ll see more. I just wonder if that’s what he’ll do. This movie is one of THE films from last year. Check it out.

BROOKLYN’S FINEST
Ya know… I pretty much like every performance in the film, but the story just kinda doesn’t involve or interest me. There’s a whole helluvalot of acting going on, but very little in terms of compelling story. It is all rather dreary and uninteresting, because it never made me care about any of that.

Columbia Pictures Film Noir Classics, Vol. 2 ( HUMAN DESIRE / THE BROTHERS RICO / NIGHTFALL / CITY OF FEAR / PUSHOVER )
Ok – NIGHTFALL is directed by Jacques Tourneur – and you classic Val Lewton Horror lovers know what that means. A great director getting to work with the stunning Anne Bancroft, the always great Brian Keith and FUCKING ALDO RAY! The film is simply outstanding. A must see. Then there’s Fritz Lang’s HUMAN DESIRE starring one of the best ladies of Noir. Gloria Grahame, is amazing to watch. You may remember her as Violet in IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE, everyone loves her Oscar winning performance in the unforgettable BAD AND THE BEAUTIFUL. Here she’s great again. Then there’s Glenn Ford and Broderick Crawford. All working from an Emile Zola novel? Really fantastic Noir. I haven’t seen the other 3 yet, but I’m looking forward to checking them out soon. Another great volume of Columbia Noirs!

LAST MAN STANDING / THE LAST BOY SCOUT (Blu Ray)
This is just typical. Neither of these films have ever gotten the proper respect that they deserve. And here they are being put together as a double feature – and apparently unworthy as a separate with cool special features. Nope. Not the awesome of THE LAST BOY SCOUT starring Bruce in what is easily his greatest most awesome role as JOE HALLENBECK!!! I say this because it is so. You may argue the point, but it just simply goes to show you do not know what you’re talking about. And Hallenbeck would punish you in a punishing manner befitting of someone that just doesn’t give a shit anymore. This and TRUE ROMANCE are Tony Scott’s best films. THEN – There is Walter Hill’s gangster version of the Western version of the great Samurai version of this awesome story. The production design and cinematography alone are worth picking this film up for. That, and frankly it is pretty damn bad ass.

LOST KEATON: Sixteen Comedy Shorts 1934-1937
Ok, now STEAMBOAT BILL, JR on BluRay was great, I’d only ever seen a 16mm print of that, but I’d never seen Keaton’s EDUCTATIONALS before. You get all 16 sound shorts that Keaton did. These are frankly awesome. THREE ON A LIMB is my fave of them all, but that’s because I’m an Eagle Scout and the plot of Buster being the world’s oldest Boy Scout. Well, tis very rich. LOVES IT! 5 hours of sound Keaton! Definitely a must for Keaton geeks!

CHICAGO – The Original 1927 Film Restored
First, let it be known I fucking love Eugene Pallette. He played Friar Tuck in Errol Flynn’s ADVENTURES OF ROBIN HOOD a good 11 years later. Here he plays the guy that Roxie Hart famously conducted an affair with. You know the story, you’ve seen the musical version of this. This is Cecil B DeMille’s pre-Musical version of the actual case. Phyllis Haver is fantastic as Roxie. This is a tremendous film that many felt was lost for all time, only to be discovered in the late director’s archive… and restored beautifully. This is a two disc set, on the other disc you get THE GOLDEN TWENTIES, which is a doc that was made in the 50’s. And THE FLAPPER STORY from 1985. We’re very lucky to have this film.

LADYBUGS (Blu Ray)
I think this is hysterical. My wife thinks I’m crazy. I don’t get no respect at all!

SALVAGE
This was one of the highlights of FANTASTIC FEST last year for some… Me, I never got to see it, so when I saw it coming out this week, I was like… DAMN, now I can see why Neve McIntosh walked off with Best Actress. I’ll be picking this up shortly.

GOD OF VAMPIRES
I don’t know anything about this film. Over at AMAZON, the director wrote up his experience making it, and it has made me curious enough to order it. I kinda dig the trailer. What do you folks think?
Next week we’ll be taking a look at CHLOE, the latest MST3K set, the Film Noir Classic Collection Vol 5, GREENBERG, Nolan’s INSOMNIA Blu Ray, Volume One of THE SUPER HERO SQUAD SHOW, The complete series of STREET HAWK! We’ve also got the great, IN BRUGES on Blu, the ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13 remake Blu, MIDDLE OF NOWHERE, ALPHA DOG (Blu) and SCREAM GIRLS. Yeah, slim pickens, but that’s the week ahead of us. Hope you enjoyed this week’s offering.

Willis gets to be as smarmy and smart ass as he should be able to in any movie. and i love last man standing. great action, but to much bad chat in between.
-
Harry, the first 2-disc set of the fairly recent GOLGO 13 animated series gets released and I very strongly urge you to check it out. You will NOT be disappointed.
-
shame on you.
-
Last Man Standing is better than A Fistful of Dollars. And this is coming from a diehard Leone fan. This basic story/plot is universal and immortal. They could remake it next as a blood-soaked actioner featuring a mysterious hitman arriving at comic con and inciting a war between Browncoats and Avatards. He immediately slaughters the winning side and pisses on their bodies while humming the theme song to Taxi. Someone make that right now.
-
. . . kills Jason & the Argonauts.
-
I concur, fucking great action film. That script deserved to make Shane Black however many millions it was at the time.
-
Last Man Standing i can only remember as being ten tons of awful though, i was in my early teens though, i have to give it a second chance.
-
The Last Boy Scout is fucking bad-ass. I worship at the altar of Shane Black. Kiss Kiss Bang Bang is a fucking masterpiece. Also, Harry, I'm with ya on Dangerfield.... I threw on Back to School with my wife once. I was all excited, but nuthin.... She just stared blankly at me afterward like I had smacked her in the chops or something. Oh well, I laughed my ass off anyway.
-
Other than Training Day, his movie have kinda sucked. Tears of the Sun wasn't very good. King Arthur sucked. Shooter wasn't that great. It actually could've been a better movie if Marky Mark wasn't in it. And it was kinda a ripoff of Most Wanted. I haven't seen Brooklyn's Finest yet, but I have a feeling it's not going to be awesome.
And The Last Boy Scout is an awesome movie. Whoever cast Taylor Neigron as Mr. Milo is a genius. -
Lots of blood and death. It reminded me a lot of my eighteenth birthday with those two hookers. Ah, good times.
I wish there were more low-budget horror pictures like this one. When you see something like this and then you watch "13 Hours In Warehouse" you can tell which one overcame the budget problems to deliver the goods. Sure, the acting in "Salvage" was a bit off at times but the execution was pretty damned good.I've just remembered that I've got to dig up those two hookers. The police were sniffing around there this morning. -
Harry, I get there aren't any extras, but whats the pic and sound quality like? Dig both movies and I'm pretty tempted to import it.
-
is the greatest Action Hero of all time.
And I am deadly serious.
He did stunts in the f'ing 20s(!!) that were still not matched in sheer danger and risk. And always with his game face on. A goddarn legend of cinema this man is.
AND (watch out for that arc) as badass as Last Boy Scout and Last Man Standing!!
Harry is so right, both should be treated to worthy publications, not a double feature.
Never were published on decently made DVDs either... Warner Home Entertainment just blows!! -
After last week's column and the farce that was his Predator: Scanner Darkly Edition review, he's proved beyond a final doubt that he doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about in this respect. He also thought the waxfest of Good Bad & the Ugly on Blu was fine as well.
-
He did stunts in the f'ing 20s (!!) that still ARE not matched. Damn, tenses are hard.
-
it's still not better than the original and best, Yojimbo.
-
Point noted and accepted. Can anyone who picks it up give me a shout on the quality?
Ta. -
As Harry said the special effects, the score and the cast are awesome. The lead actor may be kind of wooden but at least he exudes confidence in what he's doing. None of this self-doubt shit that they try to make a lot of heroes have these days. Looking forward to seeing the movie in High Def.
-
A fucking solid action flick. "He's asshole and I'm fuckface."I just can't seem to remember much from Last Man Standing, and it's one I've been meaning to catch again.
-
I thought Last Man Standing was based upon Red Harvest by Dashiell Hammet. I could swear that was in the credits.
-
hands down, best Hercules ever.

Hey Harry, since you (and the site and its fans in general) have had such a good relationship with Sly, please forward our birthday wishes to the man himself if you can get up the courage to call him on this special day and tell him we look forward to seeing him in "The Expendables" later this Summer. Sly has been really generous with AICN, answering reader submitted questions, sending special video clips and keeping us in the loop on his future film ideas. My favorite Butt-Numb-A-Thon memory to date is the sound of floor stomping, rhythmic clapping and shouts of "Rocky! Rocky!", at the "Rocky Balboa" screening. Happy Birthday to the Sly!
-
Early reviews suggest rodriguiz and co have made one bugnuts insane predator movie. So where's the AICN reviews, the film is out in 4 daysAlso Lady bugs is totally awesome, it's the only cool soccer related thing ever done. If the worldcup was a lady bugs marathon rather then the boring game itself then maybe, just maybe people would give a shit

i mean a typical kids movie about a boy who dresses as a girl to play a sport and all these AICN folk like it? plus its a Dangerfield movie made when he was passed his prime. damn. lol
-
Sad that Jonathan Brandis isn't even featured on the cover...maybe because he killed himself?True story...I WANT the dvd/blu ray for SIDEKICKS!! Awesome movie he did that ripped off The Karate Kid and all of Chuck Norris' movies, but at least Chuck Norris was part of it. Sidekicks rules!
-
Whoever the fuck it is- he can't act to save his life.
-
I couldn't believe it. I was about to add it to my blu ray que when I saw that it's available for streaming. Can't wait to watch it. Spread the good news.
-
Jeez.
-
Fucking un-WATCHABLE. sorry. had to set the record straight.
-
his legacy is a talking dolphin as a best friend in SeaQuest, dressing up as a girl in Ladybugs and ......NeverEnding Story 2. least he got to sleep with Tatiana Ali.
-
and the aformentioned awesomenes that is Sidekicks!! That movie is pure cheezy 90's WIN!
-
Die Hard 2 1/2. Was so much better than Die Hard 3 IMHO ...
-
"THE movie." Harry Knowles.
-
7th Voyage of Sinbad is definitely the best Harryhausen flick. Kerwin Mathews, the skeletons, and that Cyclops.... Gave me nightmares forever.
-
Homey don't play dat!
-
LAST MAN STANDING / LAST BOY SCOUT.
Next week LAST OF THE MOHICANS / LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT.
ps. LAST MAN STANDING is not unwatchable. Record *now* straight. -
weekend and I don't get all the complaining about the "image scrub". The image was sharp and clear, and the jungle never looked better. The grain that was distracting during the dark night scenes (most of the climax) was cleaned up, and didn't bother me at all. I don't get the "waxworks" reference in regards to the look of the actors. Only one time did Carl Weathers look a little smoother than usual.
-
Kurosawa based YOJIMBO on Red Harvest by Dashiell Hammett. Then Leone did A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS which was basically Yojimbo as a Western. Then Walter Hill did LAST MAN STANDING, which was also based on Red Harvest, but most movie fans and critics see it more as the second "reimagining" of Yojimbo than as the second "adaptation" of Red Harvest. Never read Red Harvest so I can't really judge. Neither have most movie fans or critics I would imagine.
-
Seriously, couldn't agree with more with BLEST, I want that Blu-Ray right now!!
-
Yeah, I'm guessing they kept his face off the cover because of his suicide. It's pretty messed up how bat shit crazy ex child stars can get.
-
looks awesome...kung-fu fighting with a vampire! That's pretty cool...(I know they did in blade....but this looks pretty cool...it's got a grainy feel like BDS1)
-
...now he's addicted to great horror and his Uncie Workshed has pretty much everything worth watching! Lucky chap. Got to say, I love Jason and the Argonauts but when I was a kid 'Jack The Giant Killer', 'Mysterious Island' and 'Valley of Gwangi' were just as impressive.
-
Hard to live a gay Chuck Norris movie down.
-
I can't imagine watching a Man-In-Suit movie with subtitles. I've got nothing against original language tracks with subtitles for foreign movies -- in fact, I usually prefer it -- but for a Man-In-Suit movie, the crazed redubbing is at least half the fun!
-
Harry is foiled again by spell check!
-
Not your biggest fan by a long shot but at least someone give some respect to Walter Hill. Last Man Standing is criminally under valued... gorgeous cinematography, crackin' Ry Cooder score and just drips with atmosphere... and you get Christopher Walken with a tommy gun.... WTF else could you possibly want
-
Did he go to jail?
-
typical chinese mafia trash with vampire garbage laid on top of it.
-
Pretty dang fun. Lots of Marvel Easter eggs and Hulk rules every scene -- as does Thor and idiotic Cap. Love this show.
-
If you've seen the adaptations then do yourself a favor and check out the original Hammett novel. It's faced paced and action packed and probably won't take more than a couple of days to read, if that.
-
Jason and the Argonauts does have the better skeleton fight, but I like 7th Voyage of Sinbad more as the total package. It has a cyclops battling a dragon!
-
Godzilla is a force of nature - Gamera is a fighter. Plus Gamera can fly - which makes him winner automatically to me. Unless you're talking about 70's Godzilla - like Godzilla vs Megalon - then it's anyone's ballgame.
-
I always wanted a little sister like Danielle Harris.
-
All the characters YELL at each other constantly, there are way too many fart/burp/booger jokes, and the female characters look creepy with their big boobs and tiny bodies, especially Ms. Marvel.
Gamera vs. Barugon is notable for being the only Gamera movie not to feature kids - TRUE FACT -
Actually, it IS true, my brotha. And yes, Yojimbo is better than both of them.
-
Was unaware any fans of the book were unimpressed with the film. I personally felt the film version was to a T how it needed to be done. The parts of the story I was less interested in got trimmed. The investigation was more or less lifted straight. Rapace meanwhile was devastatingly perfect as Salander. So perfect I think any debate over who should play the part here is really jockeying for second place. Excellent, gripping film. Absolutely no need for a US version.

Thats impossible...

movie...it was an awesome teen flick where the nerd who dreams of being the hero actually has the hero step out of his dreams and fight along side him...(okay, stole that from the old vhs cover)That movie is so much WIN! All the awesome dream sequences where he's in all the chuck norris flicks, Mako as miyagi, Winnie from the Wonder Years in one of her few movie roles, and Joe Piscipo as the crazy evil dojo leader...it was less of a rip-off of the Karate Kid as it was a sort-of different version.Absolutely love that flick! (and no DVD/Blu anywhere! Not even amazon has more than a few old copies...must've been a limited run)

TRAINING DAY is over-rated, the movie got mistaken for a good movie because the script is admitedly pretty good and there was many good actros doing good work, but the directing itself is the movie's weakest thing. As for the rest of his movies, they all blow and suck. Fucker has no talent whatsoever. He can go back to blow Mickey Bay's cock, he has no business making movies.
-
is if he was drinking a tall, cool Colt 45. Or am I thinking about Billy D. Williams?
-
is a thing of beauty.
-
Drinking that Colt 45. But yeah it was Lando.
-
Also based on Dashiell Hammett's "Red Harvest"
-
...I was looking forward to it, had heard so many good things about it. The first half is pretty good, but then it ends up as a typical action flick. Part of my problem with it is I had worked at a plant back in the late 90's and was on top of a train when I was thrown off by a hydrolic hose. I was flung 15-20 feet and came down on my right heel, which shattered. I endured 3 surgeries and couldn't walk for 2 years. After much rehabilitation and hitting a gym almost daily, I get around pretty good, but still have a slight limp. Now I don't mind most action flicks, but if a movie tries to present itself as realistic but they includes a big fight scene where guys are waylaying into each other and falling off balconies onto cars and cement without much damage, it just kills the movie for me. Of course, Eva Mendes does a full frontal scene in it, so it's not all bad.
-
Now that is some 100% kick ass mustaches. They're practically identical too. Probably made of the same unknown yet indestructible material as Norris's beard. As in, Carl's and Billy's mustaches could probably be used as boomerangs as well as a tarp for really fast car (convertible, of course) where Billy and Carl drive around Hollywood picking up chicks with mega-gazongas and wearing tiny American flag bikinis holding a frosty cold Colt-45 in each hand.I bet this is happening right now as we speak. We suck.
-
Ok that was a bit harsh dude...not a huge Fuqua fan, but please don't lump him in with Bay, even though he may not always succeed, Fuqua, IMO, TRIES to make good movies, speaking of which I thought Tears Of The Sun was quite good. I know some people who were in the Navy and knew guys who were SEALS and they told me that the way they were portrayed in that film was damn close to how they are in real life, heck they told me that even some of the guys who actually WERE SEALS said it was accurate.
-
It feels wrong somehow (the book describes her as "short, pale and anorexic-looking") but I can't help myself
-
are you kidding me! you guys are gonna argue over the better of the two! Go buy both and please shut the fuck up! FOR FUCK'S SAKE,GET A LIFE!!! THERE BOTH GREAT FILMS!!!
-
sorry about that,life's short,enjoy it all! it's Harryhausen guy's, for god's sake.Even his crap is golden by today's standard's
-
A nice low budget and old school looking action horror flick. For some reason, reminds me a bit of a less polished version of Dog Soldiers.
-
I can watch it anytime it's on tv.
"Ain't life a bitch?" BLAM!!! -
"The Last Boyscout" is possibly my favorite action flick. Love everything about it, so it kind of bums me out that I have to buy it packaged with "Last Man Standing". The double packs take away from the cool collectability of movies for me. Plus I remember "Standing" having these incredible bursts of action but little else. If any of you buy these blu-rays let us know how the picture quality is. I don't really want to buy a blu-ray that looks worse than my dvd.
-
I had the Last Man Standing/Boycout Blu Ray right in my hands and I let it go. It only costs 20 bucks and I know I like both films, but I need to know about the quality.
-
Why would I bother?
-
That's how awesome this movie is, Billy Blanks is a action icon from classic movies like King of the kickboxers, HOORAY!!!!
-
They had a screening of God of Vampires at Draconcon. An independent Horror film shot on film. Standing room only. I loved it. And that crowned ate it up! I ordered mine at MovieStop($15). I will be picking it up Friay. I look forward to seeing it again at home.
-
That they are double dipping on The Hangover. The only thing to be added is extra pictures.

its so fuckin well made...the acting, look, the script, the casting you really can see that eveyone in the movie is in fuckin love with Patricia Arquette and the Hopper/Walken scene...CLASSIC!! Don´t care if Tarantino thinks he wrote a better scen in Basterds! News flash...U didn´t....this one is still the best!! And I agree with u Harry on TLBS it is really under appreciated and it is one of Willis better Action movie (up there with the first Die Hard)
Would like to know how BROOKLYNS FINEST hold up compared with the other Fuqua flicks??? -

a few weeks back and for some unknown reason started whistling that theme that accompanies the introduction of the skeletons in Voyage.

Harry, I don't think your are getting how these things work.
by fireclown
You don't put up something that you haven't seen. What you do is watch it, or at least wax fondly about the thing.
-
Brooklyn's Finest is shit.
-
I really fucking hate that shit. Dissapointed that Fincher would get on the remake bandwagon but then again after Benjamin Button he's fallen off the wagon considerably.
-
I'm on a huge film noir kick these days and I'm always looking for new ideas.
-
I can't wait for all his other movies to be released on Blu Ray the way Kino does 'em. Astonishing!
Hey Harry I'm a huge fan of Keaton's career from the stuff he did from 1917 till Spite Mariage (the movies after that with MGM are painfully bad, we all know the Keaton story)
Are the lost Keaton shorts really ok? I hope so, I couldnt stand what MGM did with Buster -
...be about 20 by now? I remember when I first discovered AICN back in '97 you'd talk about him and he was, like, 6 or seven. So now he'd be about 19-20 and he's STILL too young for the modern Godzillas? Talk about a sheltered kid!
-
...walk out of that treasure room and it's a low-angle shot looking up at that huge bronze statue and then you hear a sreeching metallic sound as the thing's head turns and looks right at the hapless Argonauts... that shit STILL scares me!
-
GAMERA IS SO VERY NEAT! GAMERA IS FULL OF MEAT! EVERYBODY LOVE GAMERA!
-
granted he's made a lot of DTV movies and has some sort of fanbase but to call him an icon is a big ass stretch. more people know him as the "tae bo guy" and i bet they would be surprised to learn he's actually an actor and has made a bunch of dtv action movies. and while his martial arts skills may be good, his movies....well there's a reason they never saw theaters.
-
is the correct answer. 70's rear nudity getting a rated G = awesome. Taryn Power & Jane Seymour = yum.
-
are underrated...especially Golden Voyage. Looking forward to seeing these on blu too.
-
Absolutely correct about Jane Seymour.
-
Is it out of print and being re-released or is this a special edition or something? The Best Buy I got to always has tons of copies of In Bruges on Blu.
-
"The modern, adult version of the Film Noirs, Hitchcock style flicks… well, they’re cruder – in the sense that you will see nudity and really nasty things, but hey… That’s what floats the boat of our decadent society these days."
Harry, love the site but this is categorically false. Rape may float your boat, but don't paint all of us with such a broad brush. What happens to Lisbeth Salander is not titillating and for you to say that it is 1.) tells me a little more about you than I want to know, and 2.)diminishes the film's impact. Did it not strike you as ironic, as you wrote that little blurb, that the Swedish title of the novel is "Men Who Hate Women"? -

While I do not disagree, I must nevertheless point out that Golden Voyage of Sinbad had Caroline Munro. She and her outfits made a great impression on my 7 year old self.

“Uncle Harry who would win in a fight, Godzilla or Gamera?” All
by takingscorpioscalls
Hehehe of course Godzilla! ;)

The Driver, The Long Riders, The Warriors, Southern Comfort, 48Hrs, Streets of Fire, Johnny Hamdsome. You little fuckers had better watch yer mouths when you talk smack about Walter Hill films. Last Man Standing is FANTASTIC you little shits :)

Sounds like an improvement on the old DVD, but not a huge improvement -
Because of your glowing praise for Jason and the Argonauts, I decided to watch it on Netflix Instant at midnight yesterday, despite having work in the morning. It was worth it.
-
I'm sorry but I'm a Bruce Willis fan for life and that movie....fucking bad ass in every way. I don't know whats not to like. He blows into town, they keep his entire background a mystery,he instantly fucks shit up and fucks some ladies at the SAME TIME. How can you hate a movie in which Bruce Willis is plowing Leslie Mann, then takes the time to jump off midfuck and blow some dumb fucking henchmens brains out without missing a beat? I just decided, if you hate that movie you just hate action movies in general.Enjoy Twilight.

i wonder how Willis's ass and balls look in 3-d
by beyondthunderdome2girls1cupbillcosby
he points them right at the screen in the scene mentioned above.
-
Dude was a hardass cowboy in real life! "Blazing Saddles" and all.
-
...by distracting them by flushing his boots down a toilet. Dude also rode a friggin' H-Bomb like a bronco. Bad-ass!
-
Maybe you should take your own advice AsimovLives. You come off as some kind of prejudiced dumb ass. Training Day was a pretty damn good movie, which is why it won an Oscar along with another 13 awards & had 12 more nominations, and when you speak of it as being "over-rated" but then state in the same sentence "script is admittedly pretty good and that there were many good actors doing good work." You make yourself look like an idiot. Then you go on to say “As for the rest of his movies, they all blow and suck. Fucker has no talent whatsoever. He can go back to blow Mickey Bay's cock, he has no business making movies." Hmm ...Sounds a lot like you are hating on the actual man and his achievements, not criticizing his directors ability; maybe you didn’t like it but, I think that The Replacement Killers kicks ass; So, no all of Antoine Fuqua’s other movies do not “all blow and suck.” … Now you Sir ,on the other hand ,probably do -
"F*** U!"

The "Friday Night Football" theme in the Last Boy Scout-
by banditdarville
with the dude from the Righteous Brothers is both creepy as hell and unintentionally hilarious at the same time.

The movie was ok, But c'mon! That ending! Wayans riding the horse...(never bought it) and Willis Dancing the "Jig" And here's the ridiculous part, the whole stadium cheering the "Jig" after the mayhem that they all shockingly witnessed before the "Jig"..Bizarre!
-
It's such a no brainer!
-
some guy once told me that Toho never did this because they're saving it up for the big finale sometime in the future which frankly sounds fucking stupid. just do that shit already you shitheads and stop pretending it'll be good because with this train of thought itll end up like shit and no one will care.
-
A lot of great scene-chewing going on, and Fuqua photographs the city beautifully. but the storyline just doesn't really offer anything. there are a lot of singular elements that could have been very interesting if explored deeper, but the script instead tries to play out 3 separate storylines and then shoddily weave them together at the very end. it just didn't really work for me. but it WAS great to see Wesley Snipes doing his thing - and pretty damn well at that.

Virtually every Disney, Pixar, and Miyazaki film. And LOTR trilogy. Far surpass Jason.
-
Hey Professor_Monster, you think Gamera would defeat Godzilla just because he can fly? In case you haven't noticed, Gamera does that spinning thing when he flies - and he also is in his shell. So flying would give him pretty much a DISADVANTAGE as he can't fight when he's flying.
-
Is so underrated and IDK why it's an awesome flick, always liked that movie, nice to see it getting some geek love on here.
-
"Yea you girls ought to be getting home""Yea street lights are on""Shut up fuck face""Im fuck face he's asshole"Damn classic stuff....
-
...Yojimbo retreads Last Man Standing is somewhere below The Warrior and the Sorceress. Watch it sometime. You'll agree.
-
But one of the best things about JASON is Niall MacGinnis as Zeus
(wonderful speech about the gods fading into mythology). MacGinnis also played Karswell--possibly the best acted/written villain in horror history--in CURSE OF THE DEMON (great film, catchpenny title). Sorry but, when I was an adolescent, Caroline Munro eclipsed Harryhausen's f/x in THE GOLDEN VOYAGE OF SINBAD (invoking DOCTOR NO [first glimpse of Ursula Andress in bikini], the subsequent generation's wake-up call to puberty). -

Rapace superb I agree but the actor who played Mikael Blomkvist
by magnusbuchansharderbrother
was a wooden lightweight unfortunately. Pity they couldn't get the real Stellan Skaarsgard instead of a cut price one.
Daniel Craig signed up to play him in the upcoming totally un-necessary and superfluous English language version - guaranteed to be a pile of wank. -
