All you ENCOM geeks, check out this postcard for VICE SQUAD & KRAZ*BOT & ARC WARS & ASTRO GUNNER!!!

Published at:  Jul 02, 2010 7:04:51 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here with an awesome additional item to TRON LEGACY's brilliant Viral campaign they've been running from the get go. Check this out:

Thanks goes to SCREW WZRD for the scoop - I'll upload the reverse side in a moment. Oh - and click for the full size version! And how much do you want to play VICE SQUAD now?

RPLocke just sent his card for KRAZ BOT in!

Now Hudgens sent in these pics:

And then this crazy wonderful bastard, Hudgens, stuck the cards under a blacklight... because... well, he's awesome like that. And something showed up, so he had to show us that too!

EhrHead just sent in the ASTRO GUNNER images...

What does it all mean? Will there be an arcade with more ENCOM stand up arcade units? If so, I hope to god I don't miss it like I did last year! Thanks a lot Talkbackers - When you find something, send it on, we can play like this most every day.

And a Disneyland E-Ticket. I hope this does well at the box office. Otherwise, those things will get tanked. And amazing amount of attention being paid to a 26 year delayed sequel to a movie that had mediocre box office at the time, though is certainly much beloved of geeks now.

    by burnhollywood

Misty-eyed nostalgia's fine, but I gotta draw the line somewhere. The games were repetitious crap, the controllers were awful, and remember...this was DECADES before Gamespot, so if you got a lousy fucking game, you were stuck with it. And here's something that'll amaze you kids shaking your heads at the Gawdawful graphics...the games all cost the same as they do NOW (thirty bucks, on average) but those were 80s bucks, undadjusted for inflation, so they were the equivalent of SEVENTY BUCKS APIECE.
Oh, and an Atari 2600 retailed for 199.00 in 1980 (complete with that hideous woodgrain finish they put on everything in those days)...that's the equivalent of over FIVE HUNDRED FUCKING DOLLARS today.
Man, we got fucked in the ass BAD in those days...

    80s video games - Playability!!

    by exidy77

Yeah, but I have a lot of respect for some of the 80s games. With a handful of designers (unlike a movie studio with 300 names and a 3 year cycle, $100 mil budget), they were able to cram a lot of creativity and most importanly - PLAYABILITY into those old games.

Intellivision Auto Racing is more fun to play than any modern console racer, except maybe the new 'Split Second'.

There are very few modern games that have the re-playability factor of the "repetitious crap" you so dislike. And nobody cared about the "gawdawful graphics" because back then it was ALL ABOUT GAMEPLAY. So you got burned on buying an 80s game that sucked? Maybe you should have gone and rented it first... or did you not know that the whole game rental business actually started back then? I was renting Atari 2600 games before the Colecovision came out. I don't want to assume you're under the age of 15, but your ranting sure makes it sound like you weren't around "back in the day"... please tell me you were just joshin' us. Inexplicable_Nuclear_Balls: Playability my ass...

    by burnhollywood

There's game ROM emulators all over the 'Net...just go and try to play your old "favorites" again. You'll be bored off your ass within fifteen minutes. I've got ROMs from 80s arcade games that even seem dull by today's standards...and this was shit I dumped buckets of quarters into.
Had a Colecovision complete with the Atari 2600 expansion module (hung off the front of the console like a truck plow). The joysticks were shit that broke within months, and were as ergonomically designed as a set of thumbscrews. Better than the horrible Atari "stick in the mud" controllers, though...
And I don't know what the fuck you're talking "game rentals" for...I don't remember any of that stuff coming along until the Nintendo NES, so I think you're backdating shit just a tad...
Any Gen Ys listening...don't fall for this bullshit reminiscence. You didn't miss anything. All that can be said is that your average Gen-Xer *appreciates* today's games more, compared to the shit we had to deal with...

BurnHollywood: I play 'em all the time

    by inexplicable_nuclear_balls

I have all those emulators, and ROMs, and all of the actual original hardware. You name it, I own it... 2600, 5200, 7800, Colecovision, Intellivision, Odyssey 2, Bally Astrocade, Vectrex... I could fill this TB up with a a bigger list than fake Air Jordans for sale. I'll agree with you on the CV controllers, they were ass, but everybody thought that. look around for two seconds on Google and you'll see that's the general consensus on them. But just like today, there were plenty of third party replacements to choose from. I personally love the basic Atari joystick, but again if you didn't like it, lots of other options. As I said in the title, I play many of these old games frequently. I'll certainly admit there are plenty of stinkers from back then, but the great games are timeless. Why are so many of them contantly updated and re-released? Do you think these companies would waste a dollar putting out another version of Pac-Man or Donkey Kong if they didn't sell? A game doesn't have to have eight hundred buttons to press, or a thousand different codes to unlock, or graphics that will melt your eyeballs, to be good. There's so many to choose from, I'll just pick one... you're telling me Robotron bores your ass off? I guess you're just like Neo, got your brain jacked-in so you can easily beat all the baddies coming at you for wave after wave, never breaking a sweat or dying. You gotta admit, though, it was such a complex game. It required TWO joysticks to play! Awesomesauce!I should mention I'm not a vintage game snob, when I said I own all the hardware, I mean all of it, including the NES all the way up to the XBOX 360. I'm an Apple fanboy, and I single-handedly sold a shit-ton of Microsoft hardware in early 2002 by introducing my friends to this little new game called Halo. Wow, the old Atari Game Fart likes something new? Yeah, when it's good... Halo is an easy game to learn, difficult to master, and has almost unlimited replayability (just like the old classics). I have favorites on every generation of game console.I'm sorry you can't recall the beginning of the game rental industry. Rather than be an ass and make a smart comment about it, I'll assume wherever it was you lived back then, they didn't catch onto until later. I will swear on my dead dog's grave that my mom was taking me to rent games from Video Game World in Maitland, Florida in early 1982. They moved to Altamonte Springs a little later, and that's where I bought my Colecovision when it was released (I owned the second one in the Central Florida area). I'm sure they were one of the first, if not THE first store anywhere to offer cartridge rentals. They sent them home with you in a VHS rental box. Ah, the good old days.So there ya go, Gen Ys... gramps is done reminiscing. Just remember your newfangled rock music is cool, but don't forget to check out those old black bluesmen playing four chords on a crappy acoustic guitar. They weren't so bad either... but maybe I'm just suffering from misty-eyed nostalgia.

    by jameskpolk

I'm basically a senior citizen compared to the average demographics of this site. Those old Atari games were like cave paintings compared to the stuff you kids buy now. Those guys were working with the level of computing power that e existed then. No point trashing what came before. There are 100 year old silent pictures that still have artistic merit.

I got my postcard yestrday ( Arcwars ). I noticed the weird blocks black on black too ( you can see it if you turn the card almost on its edge with a regular light ) I'm glad I got something because I was beginning to feel left out since I never got my badge.

    Hilarious kids of 2010

    by ray gamma

I find it hilarious to read comments from some of the spoiled little bitches on here who make fun of computer games form the late seventies and early eighties.

In 1983 on any given night I was typically hammering Defender or Pac Man in the back room of my local takeaway, before skulling a few beers and then partying all night with the local girls round our village.

It's not my fault that it would be a further decade or more before you were born. Nor is it my fault that you live in the most luxurious and privileged society in the history of humankind to date. It's also not my fault that can't yet grow a beard, or that you only recently discovered you have some ball hairs, or that you are pasty and white and have alarmingly high cholesterol for a young person.

Girls hung out in arcades! Other people were there, it had loud music and it was the place to be. If you were good on a arcade machine you could play for at least a half an hour, it was socializing with burn-outs and geeks. It was better than being alone on a console or desktop.
It wasn't a basement, more like a rave with many sparkly things.
    Did I say girls??

Arcades were the place where people with good eye-hand coordination that wern't jocks could meet girls and impress them. You also got to bs with friends and strangers about the latest pop culture stuff and the stupid things adults did. Today they call them skate parks.

    by dingbatty

My family had Intellivision instead of Atari 2600, but I enjoyed playing it at friends' homes (there were later, better controllers released). Intellivision had the Tron console games, but only Discs of Tron was worthwhile.I recently got my hands on a mint Intellivision I from someone who kept it wrapped up in dry storage in Canada (I think a couple of years ago, many mint/unassembled/still in the original boxes pinball machines from the late 70's early 80's were discovered in a warehouse in Canada; I guess that's the place to get vintage stuff. I'm sorry I missed the auction as I've been wanting to own a Black Knight pinball machine.

apparently game makers didnt mind boring you to death. their only benefit would be test your ADD level. Astro Gunner?? lol. keep shooting asteroids? thats how you used to impress girls? seriously? i kept killing 60 players in a each match in CODMW thanks to my quick responses and my heightened awareness, yet the girls that were there could care less. i guess girls back in the 80s were just easily impressed with their ugly hair and fat glittery cloths.

First off, what's this shit of muddying the waters by mixing in coin-ops like ROBOTRON with cartridge games, which was my main topic (challenging Harry's "coolest thing ever" remark)? I was talking about the Gawdawful console systems of the early 80s...completely different issue, and almost impossible to confuse in that era, when the home games were pathetic, invariably lame imitations of their arcade cousins. I'm guessing you're doing the same thing mentioning PAC-MAN and DEFENDER, because the cartridge versions were absolute garbage. Stay on topic, bro.
(BTW...there would be no need to release cartridges of the Encom games...the games can actually be pre-installed onto an all-in-one game controller like this one from a few years back: http://tinyurl.com/2byff97 )
And you mentioned third-party game accessories...a better term would be "fly by night". As DioxholsterReturns mentioned, so much substandard shit was dumped on the market in so few years it was ridiculous. Not just from little nobody companies, either...Coleco was actually doing pretty well with their Cabbage Patch dolls when they decided to fuck everybody with their Adam computer. I'll never forget watching some oblivious mom buying a Mattel Aquarius computer at a department store...two hundred bucks ($350.00 today), and probably worthless within months.
I don't look at this stuff with any nostalgia whatsoever (as I said, the arcade scene is an entirely different topic). Kids like me wanted to bring a hint of that coin-op fun home, and winded up getting fucked on a regular basis. Really, it's kind of depressing...I could've blown my allowance on pot and underage drinking and been happier in the long run...

Although I will give props to Activision...

    by burnhollywood

They were the first company to realize that, it being impossible to replicate arcade games on the 2600, they would bust their asses designing games that would max out the capabilities of the original Atari console...plainly, this was a strategy Nintendo adopted a few years later when the NES hit the scene. THEY were the sole speck of hope in that dark era, because they actually had some scruples and went out of their way to give the consumer as much bang for their buck as possible.
What Pixar is to CGI in this era, Activision was to early console gaming. Someone should build a monument to them...

    by inexplicable_nuclear_balls

Who said I was mixing in coin-op versions of anything? I assumed since you're the resident expert on "Gawdawful console systems of the early 80s", you would've known I was referring to Robotron on the Atari 5200. Which, as I'm sure you know from your vast experience, is a very good port of the arcade version. And uses two joysticks, just like the arcade. You do have a copy of Space Dungeon for the 5200 that came with the dual controller holder, right?
My apologies for you not keeping up with what I wrote, but I never mentioned Defender. I did, however, mention Donkey Kong along with Pac-Man, with regards to companies still creating and releasing updated versions of them today. I was talking about them in the general sense of the original gameplay, not just the console ports. But, to stay in the window of discussion, I will certainly agree, the 2600 versions of both of those were lacking, but there's nothing much wrong with the 5200 (Pac-Man) and Colecovision (Donkey Kong) versions of the day.
It would be great to install those Encom games onto an all-in-one, but the one you posted does not play the original ROMs. It runs on NOAC (Nintendo On A Chip) hardware, and the Atari games are actually recreations rather than true emulation. If you're really interested in playing the games as they were, the Atari Flashback 2 uses the actual hardware, and even has a hidden cartridge port that can be hacked to play real carts... http://tinyurl.com/2wdwkh8
So you're saying third-party controllers from Wico, Epyx, Suncom, etc were just fly-by-night crap? I'm sure a few were, but the same is true today for current systems. For every nice replacement gamepad, there's gonna be a shitty one. I used to read Electronic Games magazine so I could get the latest reviews on not only hardware, but also games, even before I rented them. But let me guess, they didn't have those magazines where you were, just like the rentals, right?
I like your description of Coleco, apparently they made Cabbage Patch Dolls one day, and then the next they put out the ADAM, and then they closed shop. You kinda missed the entire year plus that the Colecovision was released in between. By the time the ADAM came to market (and the Mattel Aquarius), the Video Game Crash of 1983 was kicking in, and every company was fucking everyone. So you and I can agree that by then, most of it was turning to shit. But it was a heck of a run up to that point.
I'm sorry you felt let down, that you never got any feeling of playing the coin-ops at home. I was only 10 when I got my 2600, but even then I was bright enough to know the capabilities of the machine couldn't match the arcade. That didn't stop me from having literally hundreds of hours of fun playing Space Invaders, Missile Command, Asteroids, Ms. Pac-Man, Berzerk, Dodge 'Em, Crazy Climber... not to mention games that were never in the arcade, like Yar's Revenge, Haunted House, Adventure, Turmoil, and on and on. And I still play all of these today, on the 2600, even though I can play them on other platforms. Why? I enjoy the absolute simplicity of them. They're not much to look at, but damn they're fun. And if the 2600 didn't wow you, there were the 5200 and the Colecovision, both of which came very close to emulating the arcade experience. But I guess you think those suck too.
I will definitely stand with you on Activision. They are one of the most important pioneers in all of gaming, the very first third party software company for game consoles. They paved the way for almost everything we take for granted in the industry today. And they certainly knew how to work the 2600 hardware, their code is still studied today by homebrew programmers.
As for Nintendo and the NES, the only thing they did different was clamped down on who could or couldn't make carts for the system, which did indeed help to filter out the crap. But the only extra bang for the buck they gave, was having newer hardware that was more advanced than what you played on the earlier systems. If the NES had been released in 1980, you'd hate the games on it just as much, since they would have been limited by the tech of the day.

Video gaming today is so impossibly lame

    by kevred

It's all made for people with no imaginations, by people with no imaginations, and its "advanced" technology is all the more hideous for how elaborately it tries to simulate reality while still falling laughably, repulsively short. Not to mention how painfully the high-tech look highlights the tortuously poor writing and horrific dialogue in every single game today. Dumb, dumb, dumb.In 20 years, games of today will look every bit as outdated, but will lack all of the charm and resourcefulness of the games of the 70s and 80s.So enjoy the 'cutting edge' for now, kids. It ain't gonna age well.

LOL at modern kids whining that the early 80s games were lame. You don't need to be a genius to appreciate that the likes of Pac-Man or Defender were pretty much cutting edge at the time. One day in the future when you are my age, you will be trying to convince the same argument about "Call of Duty" or "Bioshock" to some sniggering teens who were only born in 2018, and you will be met with the futuristic equivalent of "pffft".

    by burnhollywood

Wow, I thought I made it pretty clear I owned a Colecovision above...the reference to the expansion module wasn't enough? And owning a CV meant that I likely *didn't* own their chief competitor, the Atari 5200 (and ROBOTRON), unless I was spoiled enough that my parents would buy both for me (remember...each system was nearly $450 in 2010 dollars), which would make someone's opinion pretty suspect...spoiled kids grow into adults Who! Know! Everything! and usually treasure their precious childhoods to nauseating excess...
Had a subscription to Electronic Games...okay magazine with some truly Gawdawful illustrations, as I remember.
Sorry, modern games are way better. The haze of nostalgia turns the ugliest girlfriend into a beauty queen...

    by inexplicable_nuclear_balls

Owning a CV would in no way prevent you from owning another system. I owned multiple consoles back then, just like I do now. And I paid for most of them myself, by either selling stuff (Star Wars, G.I.Joe) or working for it (mowing lawns, etc). So you can suspect my opinion all you want, but the things I know are because I lived them.
Yeah, those "Gawdawful" illustrations in Electronic Games completely negated the usefulness of reading it. Totally.
Some modern games are way better. Some vintage games are way better. You don't have to exclusively enjoy one, while pissing on the other.
As the the great Ron Burgundy once said, agree to disagree.
