Andrew Garfield has been cast to play Peter Parker in the new SPIDER-MAN! Now with Exclusive Video!

This just in. Andrew Garfield had no clue he had the part. Just 10 minutes before they brought him out, they told him. He said he was flabbergasted. -- Harry

Hey folks, Harry here and this is why we wait. In the last couple of days there have been some WRONG names being proclaimed, but every single time I made an inquiry the answer was, "They're wrong" - SO... Like a patient journalist - when the casting room is spinning, deals are being considered - you wait for the peep and nobody has named ANDREW GARFIELD as having the part - until Sony's Press Release. So SONY gets the credit for announcing their own actor and we all begin to search for a reaction. Plus here's a couple pics from our spy on location of the announcement:

CULVER CITY, Calif., July 1, 2010 – After a comprehensive worldwide casting search, Andrew Garfield has been chosen to portray Peter Parker when Spider-Man swings back onto the screen in 3D on July 3, 2012. The new film will begin production in early December directed by Marc Webb from a screenplay by James Vanderbilt. Laura Ziskin and Avi Arad will produce the film from Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios.

Today’s confirmation culminates what has been one of the most eagerly anticipated casting announcements in recent memory. Bloggers, pop culture speculators, and everyday fans have pored over and analyzed every conceivable online rumor in an attempt to discover the identity of the next actor to play Peter Parker. Garfield will immediately begin preparing for the coveted role.

The Spider-Man franchise is one of the most successful in film history and the three previous motion pictures have collectively grossed more than $2.5 billion in worldwide box office.

On selecting Garfield, director Marc Webb said, “Though his name may be new to many, those who know this young actor’s work understand his extraordinary talents. He has a rare combination of intelligence, wit, and humanity. Mark my words, you will love Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker.”

Commenting on the announcement, Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Matt Tolmach, President of Columbia Pictures said, “Spider-Man is a classic superhero -- a young man who balances his responsibility to serve humanity and crush evil with the shyness and normalcy of someone struggling to find himself. The role demands an extraordinary actor. You need someone who can magically transform himself from Peter Parker into Spider-Man. An actor who will depict the vulnerability of youth and the strength and confidence of a legendary figure at the same moment. We have found that actor in Andrew Garfield. From the first time we saw him in the upcoming film The Social Network, to his glorious screen test, which floored all of us, we knew that we had found our new Peter Parker.”

Producer Avi Arad added, “I’m incredibly excited about Andrew Garfield. In the Spider-Man tradition, we were looking for a smart, sensitive, and cool new Peter Parker who can inspire us and make us laugh, cry, and cheer. We believe we have found the perfect choice to take on this role and lead us into the future.”

Producer Laura Ziskin said, “We are thrilled to have Andrew Garfield for this new incarnation of Spider-Man under Marc Webb’s direction. We were fortunate enough to meet with a group of fantastically talented young men. In the end, we all agreed that in addition to being an extraordinary actor, Andrew had the right mix of humor, youth, and pathos, along with an underlying sense of strength and power necessary to bring Peter Parker and Spider-Man to life on screen.”

The selection of Garfield was revealed at a press event in Cancun, Mexico for international journalists attending a media tour promoting upcoming films from Sony Pictures Entertainment. B-roll footage of the announcement will be available via satellite later this evening -- see uplink times coordinate information below.

Garfield is fast becoming one of the most respected and sought-after young actors working in the industry today. In a short career, spanning only five years, he has already been directed by, and starred alongside, some of the greatest names and received a BAFTA for a role that won him international praise.

Garfield most recently worked with director David Fincher on the upcoming film The Social Network. He previously starred for Spike Jonze on his robot love story I’m Here, which premiered at Sundance this year. He plays the lead male opposite Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan in Mark Romanek’s Never Let Me Go, due for release later this year.

Other notable screen credits include Terry Gilliam's The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus playing opposite Christopher Plummer, Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell, Jude Law and the late Heath Ledger, Robert Redford’s Lions For Lambs, where he starred alongside Redford, Tom Cruise and Meryl Streep; Revolution Films’ “Red Riding Trilogy – 1974” directed by Julian Jarrold, where he lead a stellar cast including Rebecca Hall and David Morrissey, and his unforgettable portrayal of a young ex-con in John Crowley’s “Boy A,” for which he earned the best actor BAFTA in 2008.

Garfield’s career began in theatre and in 2006 his performances in “Beautiful Thing” (Sound Space/Kit Productions), “The Overwhelming,” and “Burn / Chatroom / Citizenship” (Royal National Theatre) won him the Milton Shulman Award for Outstanding Newcomer at the Evening Standard awards and the Jack Tinker Award for Most Promising Newcomer at the Critics Circle Theatre Awards. Other notable theatre credits include “Romeo and Juliet” (Manchester Royal Exchange) and “Kes” (Manchester Royal Exchange), for which he received the Most Promising Newcomer Award at the Manchester Evening News Awards 2004.

Now, Mark Romanek has been praising this kid in IMs to me for most of the last year - and I loved the kid in GILLIAM's last flick. SO, I'm gonna have to say, WELL DONE, I look forward to it. How about y'all...

    by DickJones

I'd like to know WHY Sony just had to have a new Spider-Man out in 2012. Couldn't be a little patient and get Spider-Man 4 back on track. Meh.

    Great Actor

    by Captain RawBeard

been excellent in everything I have seen him in... although I am not sure about him playing a high schooler as I thought this reboot was going to concentrate on Spider-Man during his high school years?? maybe if they have changed their mind and moved it to University then it will be better

  • July 1, 2010, 8:19 p.m. CST

I will go on the line...

I predict this will be THE Spider-Man many of us have been waiting for. I just pray that Spider-Man is a cocky bastard throwing taunts and a timid dweeb out of costume that is fiercely intelligent.

  • July 1, 2010, 8:21 p.m. CST

    Eat it Maguire!

    by Brick_Walker

Even if he is 26 or so, hes still giving off more of a Peter Parker vibe than Tobey Maguire. Now I'm just gonna cross my fingers and prey that they change up the costume. I hate those fucking silver triangle eyes on the mask. Give me a fucking Ditko-esque Spidey mask and I'll be eternally happy!

  • July 1, 2010, 8:21 p.m. CST

so they are gonna have a 27 year old playing a hs kid?

  • July 1, 2010, 8:25 p.m. CST

harry...have you seen the treatment already?

    by brabon300

because i was under the impression that they were going to use much more of the ultimate spidey character...and nobody is waiting for that<p>and while quips work on the page, i suggest watching batman and robin again and noting how the quips made every fight scene look cheesy

  • July 1, 2010, 8:26 p.m. CST

He was great in Doctor Parnassus

OK... ok. I wanted to dislike whoever gets this role, but I will say, this came out of left field for me. I think he definitely has the acting chops for this... and is waaaay taller than Maguire.

  • July 1, 2010, 8:26 p.m. CST

I looking forward to this too.

    by CoursinLarry

Spider-Man 2 is one of my favorite movies of all time, so I'm pretty sad about the reboot. But I'm willing to give it a chance.

  • July 1, 2010, 8:26 p.m. CST

I don't know... but what if...

What if they did something like... Have an opening origin scene in High School, but flashed to mid-late twenties - Post College, still just a photographer - and took the character out of High School & College, and into the life that Parker has been in for the last 35 years or so. Late twenties - Early thirties...

  • July 1, 2010, 8:27 p.m. CST

    Spideys/Parkers love interest?

    by BacardiRocky

Are they going the Mary Jane route again or are they going to finally do the Gwen Stacey angle justice? As crazy as it sounds, I look forward to seeing this. I never liked Tobey as Spider-Man/Parker. Garfield was in a pretty good and pretty fucked up flick, Boy A. Check it out.

  • July 1, 2010, 8:28 p.m. CST

I was NOT a fan of the originals.......

    by lewarcher1949

The first two were boring, predictible mediocrities saddled with a mopey, whiny lead character. It's supposed to be Peter Parker, not the emo fairy from Twilight! The third one was an unmitigated pile of horsecrap. Bring on the reboot!

  • July 1, 2010, 8:28 p.m. CST

Difference between Harry and Mike Fleming

    by thejerk

Fleming had this story at 5:32, Harry had it at 6:40. Fleming did some reporting, Harry waited for the press release like all the other hacks. What happens if Fleming is right about PJ doing the Hobbit too?

    MJ was the ultimate TEASE...

I want some FIREWORKS this time, damnit.

  • July 1, 2010, 8:33 p.m. CST

and given how this director played with time in telling a story about a guy like Peter Parker... God, it'd be so amazing for the story to place over longer than a week.

    I didn't want a non-Raimi reboot...

    by UTexLex

But I'm interested in this now with him. His scenes in Lions for Lambs with Redford were awesome...he held his own with a legend.

  • July 1, 2010, 8:34 p.m. CST

    by annie_michael_hall

Played a very cocky asshole/protagonist in the first film in the trilogy. And his look and style fits with Marc Webb's brand. Dig it all around. Plus he's playing Savarin in Facebook: The Movie. A little on the old side, but hey, maybe this won't be as much of a reboot as we thought.

  • July 1, 2010, 8:35 p.m. CST

    by brabon300

either do the ditko spidey that raimi only half did...or do the ultimate spidey, that no one has done<p>the spidey in his mid 20s is boring...the hs ditko spidey goes through all the probs of puberty...which makes sense for a reboot as it can connect to a new gen of viewers....i dont get this choice at all<p>but at least they didnt go the robert pattison root...fuck twilighters and their post menopausal moms

  • July 1, 2010, 8:35 p.m. CST

Actually, he only got it up earlier by 8 minutes. Our sites' clocks are keyed to different time zones. I was busy coding pictures from the announcement, which Mike didn't have.

  • July 1, 2010, 8:37 p.m. CST

This guy has nailed everything he's done - and he's been wildly varying in character, emotion and presence. This is a real fucking good actor - and you're right, he was great in LIONS FOR LAMBS... People that love MOVIES and not just Genre know that and are ecstatic about this casting.

They did reboot the Punisher. TWICE. I mean, the character has had THREE movies, and they all sucked. The Punisher isn't really that great a character anyways. I mean, all he really is is some nut with a shitload of guns out for revenge for the killings of his family. Sounds like every action/revenge flick in movie history.

    by Ingeld

organic web shooters or mechanical? What is it in the comic books these days anyway?

  • July 1, 2010, 8:47 p.m. CST

    Favorite part of this release...

Is the part about needing an actor that can transform from Peter Parker TO Spiderman. In Raimi's - Raimi wanted to have Peter Parker be Spider-Man.... but Parker, like Zorro, BECAME a different persona in the mask. If they're truly exploring that aspect of the character. This will be vastly superior. Because they didn't do that at all with Tobey.

  • July 1, 2010, 8:49 p.m. CST

  • July 1, 2010, 8:51 p.m. CST

Interesting point Harry about the dual persona, but

    by Ingeld

I can't help but wonder if the American public which knows Spiderman as a character mostly through seeing the movie rather than the comic will always think Peter Parker and Tobey Maguire's portrayal of him.

  • July 1, 2010, 8:51 p.m. CST

    Your Mom...

I love Raimi's take on the character, but there is massive room to explore this character. Adding more complexity to Parker/Spidey - having the actor not just turn into a silent CG thing... but perhaps having thoughts, dialogue and personality ALL WILL STILL BEING an awesome costume and physically enhanced creation.

It's the main casting to arguably the most pointless reboot. Yes, Spiderman 3 was bad but it didn't necessarily kill the franchise like Batman and Robin just about did to it's respective franchise. There were a few redeemable qualities to the third and there was more than enough material for Sam Raimi to get the franchise back on track with a fourth outing. But the studio decided to reboot the series that has become a staple in the superhero genre. There could be a chance that this reboot will confuse people because they're so familiar with the previous series. They could have waited a few years like they did with Batman but that can't happen since Spiderman has made so much money. They need to make more so they dropped Sam Raimi, shit on the previous series, and rebooted it cause that's business. And it's bullshit.

    Harry pays zero attention

    by enderandrew

Sony has said repeatedly this movie will take place in high school. Sony wants to target the teen audience. Harry is not only forgetting that, but forgetting that Sony fought with Raimi the entire time and ruined the franchise. So we're losing Raimi, but keeping Sony. And Harry is convinced that will turn into an improvement.<p>I'm not one of those typical haters. I really enjoy seeing movies. But I can't understand the slightest reason to think this would be better than letting Raimi make his Spiderman 4, especially after he admitted he screwed the pooch on 3, and was inspired by other films like The Dark Knight.

    by shutupfanboy

After being off base about Ledgar as Joker, I have stopped criticizing most casting choices. I still think its too early to reboot something that was only done 2 years ago. I am also not thrilled with going back to the high school stuff. The rumored script of either Moribus Twilight or redoing Spidey 1 with the Osborns don't sound promising. I hated Toby as Spidey, but he won me over, this kid might too.

whatever they are. Webb clearly excels at characterization. I mean, that's a given. I feel foolish for even having to point that out. Anyway, I want him to focus on that cuz, shoot, that's what makes a movie special. It's like the difference between Watchmen and Iron Man 2. All the action in the world will bore the fuck out of you unless it's delivered along with, and by, characters we care about. People we can identify with. And on that front Snyder always delivers and I'm sure Webb will follow suit.

    Reboots are bullshit.

    by Stifler's Mom

The ultimate in Hollywood laziness. Sony takes its most popular franchise, to which they have already invested hundreds of millions of dollars and years of development, and throws it aside after one bad entry (Spider-Man 3). Instead of trusting the writers and director who made Spider-Man 1 and 2 gigantic crowd-pleasing goldmines, the studio still assumes it knows best, even after its creative meddling ruined the last film. Instead of returning power to the true creative team, they shake up the etch-a-sketch and start over again with no regard for brand recognition or audience investment. And Harry, fuck you for applauding them. How can you predict that this will "be the Spider-Man that we've been waiting for"? Go back and read your own review of Spider-Man 2. Didn't we already get that film six years ago? I would expect more loyalty to Raimi. And I am NOT even a huge Spider-Man fan, just really sick of seeing studios (and many talkbackers) cry out REBOOT! any time they dislike one entry in a talented filmmaker's series.

    by BilboRing

    He's 27! WTF!?

  • July 1, 2010, 9:30 p.m. CST

    Your Mom again

Actually, it isn't out with the old. I was watching SPIDER-MAN 2 on Blu 3 days ago. Love that flick. And it is a great great film - but, I still wish Parker's personality grows in the costume as greatly as his power. His ability to annoy was part of what made Spidey so unbeatable. He'd get his enemy pissed and not thinking straight exposing a momentary slip that he'd take advantage of. I want a little more Douglas Fairbanks & Errol Flynn in the costume. I want to hear Spidey's smile as he's living this incredible life. AND - I was always annoyed that that wasn't there. But in the wake of the abominable shit in Superhero films when this site started up, the idea of a deepening more faithful still- approach of one of my all time favorite characters? FUCKING A, I'll get excited. That isn't to say that Raimi's films were shit, 1 was flawed, but headed in the right direction. 2 was and may still be the most perfect translation of the comic book for the duration of a feature film. Nothing beats first hour of SUPERMAN, but OTIS... sigh. Anyway, That was at that time. I've seen SPIDER-MAN 2 approximately 14 - 16 times since then and my geeky revisitations give room for additional analysis & criticism, though I often don't have the excuse to just sound off on it, unless a Talkbacker tries to hit me with the hypocrite label. I wasn't wrong with my earlier opinion, I was younger with my younger opinion. One does have the capacity to let a film age with you. Upon greater reflection, greater truth is often found. No?

*The exception being franchises like Bond or Batman..

    by Stifler's Mom

In the case of Casino Royale or Batman Begins, both franchises had gotten so far beyond what they originally intended to be, that they no longer resembled the source material. The three Spider-Man films are all still current, relevant in pop culture, and pretty damn close to the source material, if not in plot points, than certainly tone. Again, this is ultimate laziness.

  • I`m glad that they picked an unknown actor annnd I`m glad that it was not any off the actors that was mentioned on any off the sites over the past few months as they were all wrong in my eyes, this guy has the looks (not that toby did not as he was based on steve dikos Spidy) I`m sure Mark Web may do or make an ok film, but too be honest when it comes down to it i just wishs that they made Spider-Man 4 and continued were they left off with Toby Maguire they just needed to make a decent sequel with or with out Sam Rami. Spider-Man 3 as bad as it was made a SHIT-TON at the box office so I really dont see why they are remaking and already good formular, its no like Batman that needed it and its not like Bond where the character itself was too old to be an ex cold war spy in the 2000`s. I really feel that there has been an oppertunaty that has been missed here in having a good comic book franchies move forward. And that awkward camera shot off Pete and MJ at the end off Spidy 3 aint no way to end a franchies. oh well I guess we will have too wait and see if Mark Web can make me eat my words, as a lifelong Spidy-fan I`ll look forward too see how this pans out as it may suppirse me even if its not the Spidy-pic I want.

Zodiac, The Rundown, Basic, Darkness Falls... These are the movies he's written and each had an element of boredom attached to them although for the most part decent films (minus Basic, that was just terrible). What exactly did he do to land this gig and why would they put the fate of a failing franchise that could have been turned into something fantastic in his hands? I guess the good news is there's no need to anticipate so when it does come out if it's just OK, people will still love it.

I call bullshit. This remake is bullshit and your backpedaling is bullshit. Raimi's first Spider-Man film was damn good but Spider-Man 2 is absolutely brilliant and holds up time and time again. We can forget about the third film since it is utter shit. And that's what just kills me. Raimi knew the third one was shit and wanted to go out and make a fourth film that would make you forget the third one even existed. That's what I wanted to see. But Sony, Avi Arad and the suits thought differently. Well, fuck them! Arad hasn't produced a good Marvel film in years and I for one am sick of remakes and reboots! Fuck this Spider-Man film in the ass...

Let Raimi's version of that stand as there's really nothing wrong with it. Just start a bit later, college at least. Even better if we could just move forward to early in his photographer career and Spider-Man gig. I'm thinkin' most people don't really need all the exposition in between again. I guess it depends on what they're going to do with the other characters. Also agree with Harry about it covering more time. Move the story forward.

    by Nerd Rage

He acted nothing like Parker or Spider-man. People who thought Maguire was definitive Spider-man just didn't know any better. But Garfield is the perfect guy to show them the light.

    L.H.Puttgrass, To Be Fair . . .

    by Dave I

Raimi DID want to cast Felicia Hardy as The Vultress. Sure, he was forced into Venom. But he made him suck. I know Venom's polarizing, but they kind of stripped him of almost everything that made people love him, so basically except for looking sort of cool there was nothing much for anybody. <p><p>Then he was apparently planning to turn Felicia "Black Cat" Hardy into a female Vulture character? I cannot really blame Sony for pulling the plug on that abomination. And I do not even like the idea of a re-whatever with a new cast and starting from scratch with everything. As for casting an almost-30-yo . . . <p><p>-Cheers

    FWIW, HitFix is Reporting . . .

    by Dave I

"Originally, the Jamie Vanderbilt script for this film had Peter Parker as a high school student, and the assumption was that Sony would cast young so that they could do several films over the course of high school and college, a la the Brian Bendis take in "Ultimate Spider-Man." What we're hearing now though is that Parker starts the series as a college student, and that makes more sense with this casting." <p><p>So maybe it is a combination of Garfield (not the cat) being the best option available combined with (and maybe leading to, or being cast because) them starting as an end-of-high-school/start-of-college timeline makes this more sensible. And given a certain current-HitFix/former-AICN reporter's track record reporting Spider-Man news this has to be right. Right?!!!!! <p><p>The link (remove spaces) if anybody's interested. <p><p> <p><p>-Cheers

Bah, my aunt never gives me five minute speeches about heroes. What I was getting at was that those moments were awkwardly handled. There's tons more (like in the first film at the hospital when Peter was telling MJ what Spider-Man would say if he could talk to her, ugh) but I haven't seen the films in a while.

  • July 1, 2010, 10:53 p.m. CST

    by Mockingbuddha

And I mean it this time!!! Reboot haters are way out of line this time. Spider Man has already been rebooted like a million times. His story arc just isn't that long. People that try to make it longer than it is FAIL miserably like JMS. Just update it and retell it with better artists (effects)), and writers (writers/directors) and let the story live a bit longer. Carrying SpiderMan into adulthood with kids and shit is a morons dream. I was getting sick of Tobey and Raimi anyway. And didn't Kirsten turn French at some point? Ultimate SpiderMan is great because Bendis knows that what I say is true. The only way to make SpiderMan longer is to really decompress it. Slow it down. Mkae it like The Simpsons where no one ever ages. Incedentally, Batman and Superman have the same problem. Their best stories have been told several times. The only hope is a good director like Nolan or... I guess we'll wait and see for Supes.

    Who cares

    by kuldan

This is getting literally sickening. You can just feel the lack of ability for actually "creating" something new. Instead we get a creation re-booted by someone who created something that someone else already created. Original vision is nowhere near as good, intriguing, or conceptually important to the history of film as original material.

  • July 1, 2010, 11:46 p.m. CST

They got it right here. It's a more contemporary story than the originals, he's a better choice than Maguire, it'll be better than the Raimi movies. Kick-Ass was amazing though!

Hence casting a 27 year old instead of someone along the likes of Aaron Johnson, 20 and playing a teenager. <p> Would have liked to seen more high school Spidy, no need for new origin, that can be reshown in the credits. <p> But if we are going with the college years, dylan baker needs to be back and we need to get the Lizard. The Lizard and Kraven. <p> And Mary Jane, needs to be cute and hot, that kind of cute look that appeals to a guy whether you are 14 or 64.

And if you had been paying attention tot eh comic for the last FORTY FUCKING YEARS you would know that once he gets out of High School he actually becomes a fairly good looking and cool guy. Then why not just make Spider-Man 4 with some new cast members and have a new story unrelated to the Raimi ones? Why reboot it all? Even if you hated SM3 there's no reason to quit the series, just roll onward and make a better SM4... that's what a real long running franchise does.

There's EVERY reason to quit the series catlettuce

    by IndustryKiller!

From the horrid characters that had been established the the utter wasting of villains throughout the series. I'm not sure what the argument to continue the series is. Raimi did very little extraordinary work, might as well start over.

    The problem with Raimi...

    by friedgold

...was that he "got" Parker and was more interested in Pete than Spidey. It influenced the casting (Maguire - great as Parker, lousy as Spidey), the dull, dull "romance" (really, if MJ had been MIA in the first two films, I really wouldn't have minded), and the cloying sentimentality that ruined certain parts of the films. You know you're in trouble when a speech by Aunt May comes across as less plausible than a room full of doctors being taken out by some mechanical arms. Most of all, I just really, really missed Spidey's hyperactive wit - it's such a massive part of his character and yet it barely registered in those movies. A line here or there delivered terribly by Tobey, but none of the banter and humour he's known for. I always felt that the veil of guilt and anguish that Parker felt was lifted whenever he put the mask on - he could forget himself, if not his responsibility, and act like the over-confident smart-ass he would "like" to be if he wasn't so crippled by self-doubt. Having said all that, Spider-Man 2 is a great, great film. The original has a good first hour, but drops the ball for me with the portrayal of the Goblin.

would have done with a fourth film. From what I hear Sony is slashing the budget on this one, and my guess is they're going to up the Twilight quotient. With such a new director at the helm, I'm just not convinced he can wrangle the series away from the suits.

  • July 2, 2010, 7:20 a.m. CST

    Eh, I don't know.

    by shutupfanboy

The fact that he is a 27 year old Brit going to play an 16 year old American doesn't bold well. I am sure make-up will help as well as casting some other characters who look about his age and playing teenagers. I am not sure why we need a reboot considering Raimi's story really didn't end. Also, why are they going to rehash Spidey 1 with the Osborns or worse go with the rumored Twilight Moribus script. If they make it like ultimate, you are going to have a demon like Goblin which only a handful of people will understand. I am filled with confidence with this pick or even the project. Harry, is wrong, we got the Spiderman we waited for in Spiderman 1 and 2. The rest is the usual movie internet blow job in hopes to get EXCLUSIVE interviews, first looks and on set pictures. I think its a weak choice with a weak director from a studio desperate to hang on to this license until Disney rips it from their hands as goes with X-Men first class.

I used to be a HUGE Spider-Man Geek

    by Captain RawBeard

and a big fan of Sam Raimi, BUT the 3 Spider-Man films and recent comic stories have killed my interest in Spider-Man. <br> <br> The Spider-Man films were full of missed opportunities and bad decisions. I am not going to go into how I felt certain actors were miscast etc etc but here is something missing from at least the 2 sequels.<br> <br> 2nd Film should have started with Peter doing his Pizza delivery thing but traffic is a nightmare because Shocker is robbing a bank and blasting vehicles, cops out of his way. Parker changes to Spider-Man, does a quick battle, captures Shocker runs off to deliver Pizza... a much better start than the dumb kids running in road thing.<br> <br> I know Raimi hates Venom but he could have been handled so much better. In the 2nd Film, MJ's fiance John Jamesome, should have brought back a black space rock he found on his mission (maybe hit his shuttle). Black Rock is put in New York Museum. After the Credits, show the black rock cracking and black goo oozing out.<br> <br> 3rd Film could start with an incident at the Museum, Spider-Man goes in to save people, during a fight with a Venom infected Security Guard, the symbiote transfers to Spidey who could black out and remember what happened... Raimi missed a trick here and so could have brought a lot of Evil Dead type stuff to the role of Venom but instead it seems he had a tantrum and sabotaged the character.<br> <br> I am looking forward to this reboot, the director and casting choices so far have got me excited... and I am hoping this would be the start of an awesome new trilogy.

Wish they had paired this guy up with Raimi

    by amrisharmpit

Garfield seems perfectly fine for the role, and I was all in favor of a casting change. Because let's be honest - it was obvious that Maguire's interest in this series started and finished with SM1. Remember his "back problem" on SM2 that nearly caused Sony to replace him with Jake Gyllenhaal? We all called bullshit on that one. I was in favor of keeping Raimi, but giving him new actors and new writers to work with. Raimi's passion for the material, kinetic visual style, and comic-book sensibilities worked really well for these movies. I think fresh acting and writing talent would have energized him, and I think a few years of distance from the films would have given him enough perspective to make a good SM4. He knew that he owed one to the fans. It's just unfortunate that Sony had to shove him under a bus. At the very least, I hope Webb retains Rosemary Harris and J.K. Simmons for the Aunt May and JJJ roles as a tip of the hat to what Raimi established.

    Twilight paranoia is funny

    by CartoonFanboy

At first I found the ridiculous paranoia regarding Morbius irritating, but now I'm kind of embracing it. We need to take things one step further though. Why not have J Jonah Jameson's son turn into a werewolf (it happened in the comic books, look it up)? Then Morbius and Jameson could both fall for Gwen Stacey and have a really intense staring contest to see who loves her more. Yeah, that's 300 mil guaranteed, just have Spidey swing around in the background or something, don't want him distracting from the emo melodrama.

Still, I'm sure they'll manage to find a away around it : ) <p> And what's with all of this revisionism with regards to Raimi's film? Suddenly they were rubbish? I'm fine with this dude if they skip the origin, and school crap. Who says a reboot needs to show the origin. There is no rule book. But if they have to do it. If theres no way around it. On Spiders and the Punisher

    by MAD_MIKE

Spider-Man 2 is still one of the very best efforts at a Superhero film. <P> It has everything that is needed to make for a good adventure with lots of risk. <P> This guy looks alright for the part. He is not to old, hell many actors have played younger over the years. Even Johnny Depp playes a cop who impersonated a High School kid back on 21 Jump street. He was like 24 at the time. <P> Most shows you see on TV have older people in the roles of High Schoolers. <P> Ultimate Spider-Man is actually a really good book. It is more consistent than any of the other Spidey titles and has built its onw version of Peter's life with great results. <P> The Punisher, will never work as a film in the way that Spidey or even Batman do. <P> Punisher is a cold blooded killer. While we as an audiance can get behind his motivations of revenge, It sort of ends when he gets that revenge but then continues to brutally kill every crook and mobster he comes across. <P> The Average citizen cannot buy into that. <P> Death Wish is a good example as the first one was a huge hit. But the subsequent ones showed how even after Bronson tried to rebuild his life, He had gotten a taste of that Vigilantie branded killing and ended up becoming the bad guy in the eyes of everyone affected by his actions. <P> Punisher: WAR ZONE was as close as you could get to the actual Punisher. <P> There was enough action and gore and pathos for the character. <P> What ruined that movie were the campy and over the top performances of Jigsaw and Bushwick Bill. <P> They were like Itchy and Scratchy being inserted into something with serious overtones. <P> They almost completely brought the film down on their own. <P> For Spidey, I would really like to see them adapt the Storyline that had Kraven the Hunter (Who should be played by Gerard Butler)coming to New York to hunt for the Lizard and the Spider. <P> That would make for a helluva good flick.

My Remaining Complaint; Loss of Depth

    by Dave I

My biggest remaining gripe is still the loss of all the depth of character and maturity you get with the reboot. In a comic, I can get a different artist a/o writer and the different look, changing emotions/depictions, etc., but you still (hopefully) get to draw on the body of work and experiences of the character. <p><p>Now, it seems we lost that. Peter is back to being a wet-behind-the-ears kid (High School or College). That is just BORING! We saw his origin and his high school stuff, and yeah while it was fun, WE ALREADY SAW IT! And if this is a true "reboot" we'll have to have him learn how to use his powers and that with great power, etc. Maybe they will do some of that in flashbacks, I don't know. But it sounds like they are expecting us to forget the past three movies and all Peter's been through and retread the same stuff. It WOULD be kind of nice if they sort of took off from where the last movie left off, not straight from the plot, but in terms of him being through at least a couple of villains or having the most absolute basic of basics figured out. I do not care if they reject or ignore the Raimi movies, but I DO care if I have to sit through a Spider-Man origin story and then the same villains I just sat through. I also think we can make the leap of faith where if they ever decide to do anything more with Venom or with Carnage or the like we do not have to have an obligatory Venom origin to explain what was just in the last movie. We can take the same leap of faith we did when you went from the very capable Eric Bana Hulk to the (admittedly also very capable) Edward Norton Hulk. So you can have further-adventure type stories that just quickly give a nod to old films/events and then move on without having to reheat the whole origin thing over and over again. <p><p>I am REALLY hoping they do this more like they did in the opening minutes of Superman Returns or Incredible Hulk, and NOT how they are going to do it with X-Men. Progress, not REgress. <p><p>-Cheers

    Raimi's Movies

    by Mr. Profit

Spiderman 1 was good because it didn't suck. But the film took a lot from Burton's Batman. Part 2 was overrated and overpraised on here and I am surprised people are turning on it on AICN. I remember posting my criticism of the film on here to have people work in a hive mind to shut me down. <p>But my criticism still stands. It was too long. I was tired of Spiderman not being a smart ass. MJ looked terrible. And while it was better than part 1, it lacked enough action. Only good moments were Doc's rampage in the OR. And the train sequence. <p>Spiderman 3 was just a huge mess. And people blame studio interference with them wanting Venom in the mix. And Raimi "hated" Venom. But you can't hate a character so much that it drives you to just phone in your direction out of spite.... Any professional would have made that shit work. And the fact that he was willing to make a 4th movie with a lame villain, showed he didn't get what fans (and kids who worship Spiderman) wanted to see. <p>Glad he is gone. He is better with stuff like Evil Dead and Drag Me To Hell. When it comes to big budget action, his visual style not distinctive and is no better than Peter Berg or Favreau.

    by TheJudger

That neck... That fucking neck is so goddamned long! I predict shoulder pads in the costume/suit to augment/lift the shoulder line. I'm sorry I don't know who this dude is so I am looking at pics on the net, and that fucking neck is just urking the shit out of me! It's abnormally long, and yeah I'm going to talk some shit. Same way I did about fanboys praying for Ben balloon head Foster to be Freddy. Bens head was too wide from the temples on up, he would have looked fucking weird when the hat came off. The Death of Spiderman

    by turkishdelight

I LOVE Sam Raimi's Spiderman with Toby Maguire. When it was announced they weren't doing the 4th Spiderman I was and am still devastated. Garfield may be an amazing actor, the Director may be brilliant, the script may be inspired but that's all besides the point. What Sony is doing here is a perversion of the whole movie making system. You can't do this. Raimi and cast created characters I was absolutely in love with. I was invested. Even if the third one suffered a little(which was probably Sony's fault anyway), you can't just immediately put new people in and expect I'll just go with it. I'm not that shallow. I care, I feel, I need. Raimi made Spiderman his own. I don't just want Spiderman, I want HIS Spiderman. I can't think of a good analogy for all this. It's like something. It's like being told you can no longer date the person you love and have known for years, but you can now date this new person over here. Go to hell! I need some mourning time. Raimi's Spiderman is too fresh and will still be too fresh when this new one rolls out. Even if it's an amazing movie it will be tainted. I hate Sony. They're killing Spiderman.

The only one to blame for spidey 3's mess is Raimi himself, if he had the balls he would have stood up to the studio and made the film he wanted to make. Spidey 1 and 2 had brought in hundreds of millions, sure there would havebeen tensions if rami had spoken up, but sony would have backed off for fear of losing the spidey 3 monies. In the end spidey 3 did make money so i assume sony think they were right, but man, the film spidey 2 was setting up could have been something real special

    Singer or drummer?

    by Darth Macchio

You know when your favorite band has inner turmoil and someone gets kicked out. Loosing certain members means almost nothing typically and sometimes loosing one person means the band is dead. I posit the loss of a singer is the deathblow to any band as it's the most signature aspect of the music.<p>Now, what's the point? How does this relate to the Spidey reboot?<p>I feel like we're all Marky Mark and Jennifer Aniston walking into the Spiderman basement only to find that there's a new movie, new director, new actor, etc, etc...<p>So the question becomes...what did we loose? A *very* replaceable drummer or the deal-breaker singer?<p>I'm not saying MacGuire or Raimi are those singers though I think Raimi certainly comes close. But it seems like the first franchise isn't even stiff with rigor mortis yet and here we are with a new one with all the same (from the initial looks) look and feel.<p>I echo those sentiments that others have mentioned in this TB; the problem here isn't fixed with Tobey or Raimi going but with Sony still being present.<p>I doubt anybody will miss Tobey or Dunst but Raimi had a defined love of the character and brought us some of the first high quality comic book movies of the, at the time, emerging genre.<p>All that nonsense said, I would love for this to be great but with the hapless Arad being less than reliable and Sony being nothing more or less than a huge cash machine seeking only to make more cash that we'll likely wind up with a far inferior result than what Raimi did even with Spidey3.<p>Hopefully I'll be proven wrong...

I never thought Spidey 1 was that good

    by FlyingToupee

It had things in it, and most of the origin was well done. But they really screwed the pooch on the Goblin. They had an actor who actually could make his face look like the Goblin in the comics, and put a friggin' bobblehead mask on him. On the other hand, I thought that 2 was really good; I watched it on Blu-ray a few weeks ago, and still really liked it. So I would like to see Raimi get another chance at equaling Spidey 2. I'm not crazy about a reboot; I'm hoping that the rumors I've heard about a loose sequel are true, and we get a progression of the characters rather than a tired retread of the origin.

    Illeana Douglas as the Lizard

    by VikkiMarsdale

Okay, I check Mark Evanier's Newsfromme blog or site or what ever it is and even he didn't mention that Garfield, the feline comic strip star whose animated adventures he's been associated with over the course of many years and several series, has been given the nod to play Spider-man in the next Spider-man movie. and, face it, if a joke like that is too obvious for even Mark Evanier to do,it must be bad. So, moving right along...<br /> 26 year old Andrew Garfield has been signed to play the roles of Peter Parker and Spider-Man in an upcoming film or three.<br /> Sounds like a case of going for the CW, Potter and Twilight demo. Or more specifically, catering to the Glee fans, casting a 26 year old to play the beleaguered high school student Parker.<br /> Let's hope that by the time shooting begins they can do three things: tame his hair, find a redhead to play Mary Jane and settle on one (1) villain.<br /> In response to all the news coverage and rumors leading up to this announcement, I say a number of comments from people hoping they weren't going to go with an "emo Peter Parker".<br /> I'm not sure what that means exactly in spite of having heard a few Brighteyes songs. If it means trendy, post-goth or a certain type of limp hair-do, then I'd agree. but if you go back and read the Lee-Ditko issues of Amazing - (the only ones that really matter, Romita and MacFarlane fans) - Peter Parker always was a mopey, moody, manic-depressive character shouldering the burdens of the world. And that was in the early to mid-'60s, decades before the term 'emo' was coined Not saying Tobey was entirely awful in the role or that Dirsten Kunst was anything remotely approaching acceptable, but lets hope they get it right this time. Meaning no Mighty Morphin Power Goblin armor.<br />

We've got to look forward, not back.

    by The Reluctant Austinite

This reboot is happening, and I hope to enjoy it. I too wish Raimi were given the chance to make another Spider-man, as I thought the fan community was far too hard on him for dropping the ball on "Spider-man 3" (for a number of reasons he may or may not have had total control over) after delivering two really good films and setting the tone to follow for modern comic book movies. But Tobe was turning 35, and the studios want Spider-man to remain in Peter Pan mode to appeal to the "Twilight" audience. That's fine. Like James Bond, you've got to recast and reboot every 10 years if you want to continue. Coming from the generation that came of age in the 70s and 80s, it's damn amazing that we have Spider-man movies at all. It wasn't that long ago that this type of story was unfilmable.

    About the wisecracking Spiderman.

    by rbatty024

I hate to say it, but that's a persona that's easier to pull off in the comic books than in the movies. If Spidey is cracking wise during a fight in real time, then it has the potential to be either incredibly cheesy or undermine the tension. I knew a lot of people who hated the first Spiderman because of some of the Spideyism (like the part where he tells Jameson to shut up because the grown ups are talking). Not to say that there aren't solutions to those problems, but just remember to be careful what you wish for.

Someone who actually looks like Peter, (And I've rather have an actor who's 2 inches taller than his comic counterpart than the mideget that was MacGuire. Heck bening taller didn't hurt Jackman in the Xmen films..) Here's hoping he acts like him too, Making all the fun wisecracks that are pretty much the defining characteristic of Spidey! (And not the shambling, whiney, slow witted coward that MacGuire and Raimi made him out to be..)I've never been a fan of re-boots, but in this instance I'm so fricken grateful. Thank God, they're taking more care with the casting this time round!

That would have heart, humor, and be AWESOME. However, being stuck with a new Spider-Man series (anything is better than Maguire. That jerkoff is only good for a sobbing), this gives Sony a chance to erase all the junk they built up with the old series. No snaggle-tooth MJ, let Gwen be Spidey's first love, and build off of the Spectacular Spider-Man/Ultimate Spider-Man universes. <p> Rather than start with Goblin as the baddy, have Osborne be the villain behind the curtain. Over the course of a new trilogy, build the rivalry and bitterness between Eddie Brock and Parker (over Gwen would ROCK).<p>

Let's not roll Spidey backwards, please.<p>Silver-Age high school Spidey would be fun, but Hollywood is too full of self-conscious, desperate-to-be-cool narcissistic assholes who are far too uptight to make anything with that light a tone.<p>So maybe we'll get the "realism" of the Ultimates version? Bah, it's a load of crap.

    by JimmyPasta

Reboot it because of problems with SM4's script. The "rights" clock was ticking. They did not want to turn it over to MARVEL/DISNEY. It might work, by going with a younger cast. Something the MTV_Gen can grab on to. I just worry about over-saturating the market with Costume movies.

Great actor! Maybe too good for Spides??

    by performingmonkey

Andrew is brilliant. First I saw of him was in Red Riding where he blew me away. Actually I must have seen him in Doctor Who before then but he didn't stand out there (those episodes were shit anyhow). Then I recognised him as Anton in Dr Parnassus and you can tell from that understated performance that the guy is gonna be huge, and deservedly so. Peter Parker...hope he hasn't messed up his career by taking this on (OK, money-wise it's not messing up his career!)

    Are you all INSANE?

    by RaptorJesus

First of all - FIRST OF ALL, rebooting spiderman is REATRDED! We just saw the character introduced less than a decade ago, it is TOO SOON!<p> This is just a bullshit move by Sony to keep the rights to Spider-man, when really they should just sell them back to Marvel and let Marvel handle the character properly and let it be part of the MCU. <p>Now, oddly enough Harry may have a slight point that in the previous films we didn´t see Parker "become" Spider-Man because Parker was Spider-man (which is quite close to the comics actually). I don´t mind see a bit more growth, but please don´t make the two personalities distinct. <p>this is not a bruce wayne/batman thing...after parker became spiderman he was still polite and such in normal life, he just wasn´t as much a pushover. Don´t have him still be a spineless genius victim while he is out defeating supervillians. <p> One good thing about this is we can get rib of the retarded biowebshooters, and have the proper web shooters and all the problems they contain. <p> one last thing, the casting in the originals was perfect with the exception of dunst and grace. dunst is simply a bad actress and not attractive, and grace is...fycking topher grace. For Eddie brock....are you kidding me? All those saying this new kid looks more like parker than Toby....the fuck is wrong with you all? He looks like he would be at home in a twilight movie, not playing peter fucking parker. <p> sigh.

    by IndustryKiller!

Man fanboys are really getting insecure these days. You would think Garfield was fronting Calvin Klein underwear campaigns from the way people are talking about him. like he's fucking Kellan Lutz or something. He looks like a fairly normal decent looking guy. He's not a sickly looking nerd like Macguire played him and that's good because neither was Peter Parker. Where the fuck do you people get in your heads that that's who Peter Parker is?? Parker, despite years of delusion from the geek community. Does not represent the average fanboy, he represented the average not jocky kid from 1960, two COMPLETELY different things. And no those are not equals in their respective times. What an absurd misconception.

    Reboots are imaginative

    by strosmer

Or have none of you whining about reboots seen Nolan's Batman films? Remakes are unimaginative. I say reboot away (at least when it comes to comic book movies). And the general public will not be confused by a reboot this soon. It just cracks me up to hear that sort of statement. Get over yourselves! General audiences aren't half as dumb as you think, they just want to see a good movie, and you whiny fanboy bitches aren't half as smart as you think, so please do us all a favor and SHUT THE FUCK UP already!<p>Oh, and a 27-yo playing a teenager is no stretch, so just STFU about that too. Based on his performance in Dr. Parnassus alone, I know Garfield will nail this part. Sony's meddling is the only real concern here. The talent involved is fine.

The ditko spidey was not to distinct personalities as such, as parker acting more confident and cocky when spiderman. The fact that a superhero when in superhero mode may have a different voice is part of the disguise, not evidence of a distinct personality. <p> Likewise, acting more confident, cocky is an act, not a separate personality as such. a subtle yet significant difference, and it fits in how spiderman was portrayed in the last 3 films. well, first 2.

No one mentioned his freakin dancing Skills!

    by KICK

Never felt the urge to join the talkback before. But when I read the news that Andrew Garfield got the part and read all the messages here, I missed someone mentioning the F***ing DANCING. When I saw Tobey dancing in SM I felt embarrassed just by watching him. When I watched Andrew Dance (I think his character was on XTC in Boy A), I thought it f***in rocked, wishing I was on X or him or whatever!! Check it out! They should let him dance in the new SM and he would nail it, without looking gay or stupid! From 'Boy A' on I was hooked on his acting. Red riding '74, how he slowly evolves into the guy he is in the last electric scene, chills. I always thought he had this peter parker vibe going on, so imagine my surprise when he made the list. Thanks to Webb for sure. Someone that recognizes the talent of Joseph gordon levitt (his brick fighting scene rocks)and now Andrew Garfield should get all the creative freedom he wants, period

    Web slingers organic versus mechanic....

    by Darth Macchio

For comic continuity sure, mechanic is the way to go but I do agree that having a teenager create a substance stronger than anything any scientist or engineer can make is quite implausible.<p>Yes, of course, so is a man climbing up walls, having a "Spidey sense" and being superhumanly fast and strong but sometimes it's the needle that breaks the camel's back and not the luggage.<p>Maguire won't be missed and neither will Dunst I think. I wish they'd give the Connors/Lizard role to Dylan Baker but that won't happen probably.<p>Who knows...a reboot is far too soon unless they redo everything. We all likely felt that way about Batman until we saw that Nolan basically redid everything. Well, Nolan is that kind of capable but not many directors are and from the first looks of this reboot, it looks identical to Raimi's (well, the original production anyway - which is the point, it's going to look identical with different actors making it weird).<p>Spidey's a great character so here's to hoping it does work and does well.<p>It just seems like it's destined for mediocrity...I still wonder what Cameron's Spidey would have been...

  • July 5, 2010, 10:51 a.m. CST

    It would be nice if

    by HermesTrismestigus

They approached it like the old 60's spiderman cartoon with Peter Parker being very different as Spiderman with a different voice and the voice over and insults and the cool jazzy music...and make it clever and more detective like stuff...but the director's got me put off..hated 500 days of summer could only stomach half the film and that seemed like an eternity.

    by ikalos89

I can't get over how excited I am...I'm not worried about sets. The sets to the other spiderman movies were was the actors, directors, and special effects that sucked. This will be what should have been. And anybody who says they didn't like 500 Days of Summer shouldn't even watch movies. 500 Days of Summer was what got me excited about this reboot. It dealt with drama in people's lives realistically which is what I want in this Spider-Man cause I read the series they're patterning this reboot after (Ultimate Spiderman). I can't wait till this movie comes out and everyone has their foot shoved in their mouth cause they end up loving the movie.

Harry already SUCKING SONY COCK to get "pwesents"

    by Starship Captain

Sorry, Harry. USUALLY I can write something nice...or wish you well on your health and that sort of thing...but today you just proved how full of utter fucking BULLSHIT you are. Either that, or shown once again that you are incredibly fickle and have NO memory of what YOU yourself have written or said.<p>Up above in a post, you wrote (quote): "I predict this will be THE Spider-Man many of us have been waiting for."<p>Huh? Excuse me? THE (in capital letters for emphasis) one you've waited for? As if the other films to date have been huge disappointments? After all, when you say "many of us" that clearly infers YOU are part of the dissatisfied group and it infers that you HAVEN'T liked the movies to date.<p>But, boy, funny thing. For once I used the search engine on the site because I was curious what you thought of SPIDER-MAN 2, which notoriously most fan boys seem to rave about, but which frankly I thought was only good for its second half (the first half being too stretched and boring).<p>And what shock! For someone who is hoping that THIS new film will be "THE Spider-man movie many of us have been waiting for", that's an interesting statement considering here's how much you LOVED the second film...<p>EXCERPT FROM HARRY'S SPIDER-MAN 2 REVIEW:<p>"As the final image graced the screen and the brushstrokes gave way to life...the film that followed exceeded the power of those paintings and showed what cinema can be that comics never can. Complete.<p>"SPIDER-MAN 2 is alive and breathing. It isn't just the whiz bang of the's the little moments, the relentlessness of Parker's misery. How tragically overwhelmed it is to be a hero trying to be everything for everyone, but himself. This is Peter Parker, like Jesus being whipped by life everywhere he turns and at his greatest moment of heroism, I’ll be damned if it isn’t a crucifix moment. In the Ditko/Lee days of Spider-Man...the boy couldn’t catch a break...he never could win at life, so he'd escape into the by being a bully upon crime. He’d use faster and smarter quips than his life-side adversaries like Jameson or Flash Thompson...he was still Peter Parker in his calm Spider-Man moments, but in a fight...he became the best in what humanity backed against a wall can be...he gives it everything he has...heart & soul.<p>"Raimi has captured THAT Spider-Man. He's captured not the pretty boy Spider-Man in nice digs, but the Peter Parker overwhelmed by that which over-whelms so many of us...LIFE. He lives in shit, puts up with shit, piles shit on himself and then beats the shit out of shit and there's always too much to flush. He can’t save everyone and somebody unfortunately usually gets hurt, and for him… it is always his fault… if only he had… ya know the tale, the what if hell of life.<p>"The film just bristles with energy. When it’s funny, it is DAMN FUNNY. When it’s exciting, it’s tremendously exciting. When it’s heartfelt, you’ll feel every beat.<p>"This film has the kinetics and humor of Raimi's EVIL DEAD 2 married with the heartache and feeling of A SIMPLE PLAN on an impossible level of production and artistry that simply can not be faulted by these eyes."<p>"For me, this is perfect."<p><p>Oh, wait. I guess the so-called perfect film wasn't so great -- not with a new one in the pipeline -- so NOW Harry will get the perfect Spider-man film. As well as a few packages in the mail from Sony Pictures. Gee, I wonder how many plugs or banner ads we'll see from Sony popping up around here. As this film goes into production, and as it nears its eventual release, I can't WAIT to see the "fair" and "unbiased" journalistic coverage that it will get around here...

    Uh...Spiderman 2 a classic?

    by hulkiest

Whoever's saying Spiderman 2 is perfect and all that is completely lying to himself, or hasn't seen that many movies or simply hasn't read that many Spiderman titles-- let alone anything else that would teach one what makes a good story. Let me remind the delusional, easy- to -please Raimi boosters of but just a few Spiderman 2's numerous flaws: 1) DOC OCK is crap. All over the map. He turns good in the end, that says it all; I have old Peter Parker Spectacular Spiderman Annual #1 where Spidey rips one of Ocks arms off and you know, Ock is crazy for revenge. Like bloodthirsty and really trying to kill Spidey. Back then I couldn't believe how good Spidey was for not trying to kill Ock in return. That was a pretty decent comic and gave me the impression as a lad that you don't F*&% with Doc Ock. He's dangerous! But in Spidey 2 Ock wanders around with negligible criminal motivation, hiding out in a lame waterfront warehouse, and tinkering with his contraption in broad nightlight "Gee what's that strange radioactive glow coming from that rickety old warehouse..." while Peter, who befriended him, doesn't seem to mind that he encountered his idol trying to rob a bank, and then promptly forgets about him until he kidnaps Mary Jane. Yeah, anyone who reads Spiderman comics, i.e. the good Spiderman comics from the 70's and 80's, knows that that's not Spidey's character. He tracks down dangerous criminals or nearly dies trying. Especially if they're his so-called friends or acquaintances. But anyway, the stakes are pretty low for Ock in the film. Even the finale where half the city is supposedly being destroyed or whatever, nothing seems to happen to anybody. No crowd of extras flying into the water. Nobody's in any real danger. It's a lame climax. I was stunned when I saw it because I couldn't believe that it was actually worse than Spiderman 1's boring fist fight on a Doctor Who Set. (We had to wait until 3 until there was finally a swinging between buildings fight and that wasn't all that interesting because Peter wasn't in his Spidey outfit and it resulted in a preposterously convenient memory loss. #2: The movie was in horrible need of editing. Raimi, did we really need a twenty minute pep talk from Aunt May when the point has been made that the little neighbor kid needs Spiderman. That "I believe there's a hero in all of us." monologue was one of the most needless and embarrassing scenes I've ever sat through in a major motion picture. It's like she was reading a cookie recipe. I half expected to hear her say to Peter. "Here Peter. Try one of my scrumptious Butter Muffins." Which leads to the other needless and embarrassing scene: The Subway scene. "Here's your mask Spiderman. We New Yorkers won't tell a soul about your secret identity because after 9-11, we're all so gosh darned nice and selfless and no one in this crowd is terrified of you and all the trouble you bring to the city." And no would would possibly use their cell phone to take a picture of you." Bah! Why have the mask off in the first place? Hey, why not cut all that baloney with the crowd and keep the sense of urgency and the only thing involving the crowd is when they say, "If you wanna get to him, you gotta go through me." ' As it stands it's an awful, awful scene. I mean, like worse than TV. Only thing that tops it is the psychiatrist scene where Peter does what? He says that his FRIEND is having a dream about being Spiderman! Yeah, sure. And Harry's complaining about Otis in Superman. I mean didn't that whole "I have this friend" line of comedy grow whiskers in the Gilligan's Island/Brady Bunch era?' People complain about Spiderman 3 but the seeds of it can be found in Spiderman 2. Just like how the Ewoks lead to Jar Jar. And if everybody hadn't laughed so uproariously at the Raindrops Keep Fallin' on my head scene Raimi wouldn't have thought that musical interludes in Spiderman movies were funny. 3) There's also the carry over flaw from Spiderman 1 where MJ doesn't know Peter's Spiderman. Just an irritating rewrite on Raimi's part. The comics had the romantic angle down perfectly. MJ loves Peter, knows he's Spidey but doesn't want to get involved. Pining for a guy but unable to show her true feelings. So instead we have clueless MJ saying at the end, "I guess I knew it was you, all along... sigh...!" Uh, what tipped you off, Einstein? Was it Peter's displays of physical strength and agility throughout the two films, like the way he caught your lunch tray, sent Flash flying down the hall and helped you avoid that car that came flying through the window?" Dumb. Hulk hates when writers write characters so they seem unbelievably dense. Especially when they're written well to begin with. What kind of idiot hack has great comic plots handed to them with a big a shiny bow and note that reads, "Can't Lose With This One!" And the hack still changes things so they doesn't make sense? Oh, I know. The kind that work for Sam Raimi. Spiderman 2 is good for a handful of scenes, mainly in the beginning. Alex Ross' opening credits were so good that they made the turgid Spiderman 1 seem worthwhile. Like the paintings told a better story than the actual movie. Oh, and I like the scene where Spidey's delivering Pizza And he can't get the brooms to stay in the closet. And I'll admit it, I laughed when Peter's getting hit in the head by book bags at school, but later realized that Spiderman wouldn't get hit because his Spider sense would warn him of the oncoming bags. Oh, I also like the thwarted robbery when Spidey has to go to MJ's show. That was cool when he caught the car in mid air. 2 does capture the feel of hapless Peter Parker's never ending problems. But as stated above, far from perfect. I'd say it's only marginally better than 1 and 3. And though I've been a voice crying out in the wilderness all this time, I notice the numbers are growing of those who bought the films on DVD put them in a few times and ultimately realized what a crap film series it was. Anyway, I for one am looking forward to a new Spiderman with a new creative team. They can't possibly do worse than Raimi.

...They DID reboot Superman properly. John Byrne (of all people) did it and it was called The Man of Steel. Then, comics became a medium perused mainly by washed-up, aging losers with nostalgia fetishes and DC decided they needed to maintain the copyrights on ragged old characters and concepts no one else gave a damn about and to tie in with a lame TV show on a network no one watches anymore. Then came Waid and Johns, and a different planet Krypton and Supergirl every 2 years and suddenly Jor El had a beard. Lets see... guess another year or so Nolan's film will be pending, time for another reboot DC!

He'd have been great for the late-twenties-early-thirties Spider-Man that has been in the comics for years now. Plus, I get the feeling he would understand the property too. He's about ten years too old now, though.

I agree the Toby Maguire movies sucked something fierce, namely for the leads, Maguire looked like he was going to cut his own wrists, snaggletooth Dunst was ghastly and James Franco was too James Franco-y, Raimi also said he didn't "get" Venom, how hard is it to get Venom? Red flag right there. Spiderman 1 and 2 did have those great moments like 1st Goblin fight or the train part, but the movies still sucked too much... and no movie is perfect i agree but some still have the good outweighing the bad, these movies however had like 5% good and the rest WALRUS SHIT, the tone and whole mood were just completely wackass compared to fucking ANY Spiderman comic age, silver age or any age even. Heck that Japanese Spiderman movie from before had more spirit from the comics than these.

    Good first Goblin fight????

    by hulkiest

My friend, TakingScorpiosCalls, of course this all opinion and whatnot, but that 1st Goblin fight in my mind was nothing but tone deaf and uninteresting, desperately trying to match Superman The Movie's 1st appearance scene with the helicopter but like a poor marskman, Raimi...!! Superman had the awesome, white-knuckle suspense, where you’re screaming for Clark to turn into Superman. Raimi’s so tone-deaf, he swipes the idea but adds it after the man on the street introduction where everybody has an opinion of Spidey four minutes after he arrives on the scene, so we don’t get the tension of Spidey’s main entrance as a full-fledged hero. And Raimi’s rescue scene is overstuffed with the stupid, silly- looking Goblin costume and Macy Gray and Tim Burton Batman balloons and all sorts of distractions like, “Hey, if the Goblin can throw bombs and disintegrate people, why is he bothering with other weapons? He already won the fight because now all he has to do is disintegrate Spidey with his disintegrating bomb.” And “Why weren’t Harry and MJ disintegrated with the rest of the Board?” Or at least MJ’s leg. That would’ve been guytsy, eh? Half the movie where MJ is an amputee? And the Green Goblin basically beats the crap out of Spidey in this scene. WRONG, RAIMI! If you want Spidey's main entrance to mean something, Spidey should beat the crap out of the Goblin, in any cool fashion, like for example, webs him off the glider and and throws him against a wall, and so Norman goes back and increases his serum and you know, starts going stark raving mad in the effort to increase his strength. I learned this in college acting class. RAISE THE STAKES! Meanwhile, there’s a crowd of people fleeing in terror, but no sense of it clicking in the public’s mind of just how awesome Spiderman is. Why? Because Spidey didn't win in any definite iconic way. And it didn't register with the crowd. The scene is a big old stew of other ideas that aren't working. And again, I have to remind you, The Goblin's Costume looks terrible, especially in broad daylight. And so after the scene as it played in the movie, I say to myself, ‘"THAT was a lousy scene, with clumsy action.” Sam Raimi, the kinetic camera, cartoony action guy CAN’T do cartoony action. Who’d a thunk? Anyway, you blame the cast, I blame Raimi, I mean he cast the cast, didn't he? And the only one he found that was great was JK Simmons. Okay, Willem Dafoe's always good, but you don't put a plastic mask on an actor who's face looks like a Goblin's. (And who really should've played the Joker) I know this is a bit overwhelming, but I'm passionate about Spidey. I'd like to see Marvel do a really good version of the story. I don't care if they keep rebooting until they get it right, but geez! How can they not get it right!? The comics were already written for them!
