NBC Pulling PERSONS UNKNOWN Out Of Monday, Sticking It On Saturdays!! That Can't Be Good!!
I am – Hercules!!
“Persons Unknown,” the “Prisoner”-ish new NBC series from the writer of “The Usual Suspects,” will air its last Monday episode on July 5, then migrate to Saturdays starting July 17.
This is a very bad sign for the series’ long-term prospects.
The show’s fortunes were not enhanced this week when NBC shifted it at the last minute from 10 p.m. to 8 p.m. -- so quickly that at least some DVR program guides could not keep up with the shift.
The series debuted with a lousy 1.4 and has been losing ground ever since:

better than 90% of the shit SyFy has been making lately. It sucks to see it being moved to the Saturday death-slot.
-
Tori is effing hot too. Too bad she is gone from where-the-hell they are.
-
This is a great show and Warren is right its better than about 90% of what SyFy puts on. And its one of the better new 'lostish' replacements to hit in the last few years. This show deserves a shot!

The series was never intended to have long term prospects
by throwmetheidol
It's a limited run 13 episodes and done series. I'm sort of enjoying it - it is cheesy and stupid but unlike Lost it isn't full of itself and pretentious and I'm fairly sure they won't end up reuniting in heaven. Plus the Aussie who plays Janet is hot.
-
Clearly Herc doesn't actually watch the promos. He probably doesn't watch the show for that matter. Since you failed to pay attention Herc I'll spell it out for you. They say in the promos that at the end of the summer all will be revealed. That's not something you would say if you had long-term plans for the show. This is the 2010 version of Harper's Island.
-
NBC better show the whole season.
-
Ten years anniversary eh? Sounds like you've been employed here ten years too long. You should probably look in to things like this before posting and looking like a simpleton even if you really are one.
-
First four eps have been decent/good. Iv been comparing this show to Flash Forward and it comes up looking amazing :/
-
It's the Anti-LOST.
-
So, whatever.
It's like Harper's Island. It only ever was supposed to go one season. -
Coulda been a conteder, if that chick had shot Joe, or someone.
-
They VO guy says that before the end of the summer all questions will be answered. I know that's just something that get said but I always took that, combined with calling it a miniseries to mean that it is in fact a miniseries.
-
I thought that we're supposed to find out what the island is about by the end of the season. I'm sure if it took off it would continue off island. I also think that they are all being set up to be assasins. Just sayin...
-
For a one season show, it's doing okay in my book. I'm interested enough to keep watching
-
For a summer miniseries this show is not brutal.
-
Totally not pulling its weight.
-
It has its moments. Don';t want to spoil it for those who haven't seen the last episode, but the "Shocker" was really obvious from the start. If you pay attention to the very start, it isn't any surprise at all. I also think the newspaper bit isn't working either. The show is OK. It isn't great.
-
so it has to do with electricity, maybe the fever dreams of a guy in the electric chair?
or 2 in the pink and one in the stink -
...but what the fuck else is there to watch this time of year? My friend and I have laugh riots coming up with nicknames for all the charcters: Ugly Jack (now Ugly Ethan), The Kate, Shannon Jr., Black Sayid, Fat Sawyer, Lesbian Hurley, Chinese Ben, Friendly Concierge, Ferris Bueller's Friend, and next week, the introduction of... Cornrows Danielle! Hope NBS finishes out the 13 episode run, if not, I hear it'll be on sale on DVD in August.
-
If not Workman, then Friendly Concierge could be Male Cindy.
Although it could turn out that maybe the concierge is Stephen King Clone Jacob or MIB.
Ferris Buellers Friend is of course the American Charles Widmore. -
...I know you're all that and all but you are sorely lacking in ratings info. You have listed such ratings killers as "Cake Boss" and "Warren the Ape", which apparently only 20 or so people are watching but you have left out those shows that are summer winners like "Burn Notice", "Royal Pains", "Hung", "America's Got Talent", and behemoth of them all, "True Blood". Instead of implying that no one is watching summer TV by posting little watched show ratings, why don't you report the info on shows that are actually popular? Where are those? Huh? Huh?
-
..huh?
-
it's a good show. I saw 2 episodes, but I would rather wait for the DVD set.
-
ratings darling NBC would have gotten them to extend the series beyond the initial 13 episodes. NBC is desperate for a hit so there's no way they'd let a popular show just end without squeezing everything they could out of it. But, yeah, the show has been promoted as a mini-series, and it's airing in the Summer, so I don't think anyone had any reasonable expectation it would become a regular series, or even get a second one next Summer.Karuma, those are Monday shows. Not sure about most of the "summer winners" you mention, but True Blood is on Sundays (as is I believe is Hung) so that's why it's not mentioned.
-
some bad acting but the story is interesting.
-
Watch the ratings skyrocket.
-
But, still, if they can't commit to a time-slot for it during the frakkin slow summer season, how do they expect viewers to commit? It has unrealized (so far) potential, and is moving MUCH too slowly. They need to pick up the pace, and they better deliver on the "All will be revealed at the end of the summer" promise. If it is as sloppily done as the recent Prisoner, that will suck. Some of the casting is pretty good, production values are decent, but the writing (dialog/story) pace is mostly sleep inducing.
-
I've seen every episode of it so far and it is just a giant piece of crap.
-
Thats some great advertising NBC.
-
Miniseries work like series. If they're popular, they find a way to make more. Ask Bill Adama. Or Rudy Jordache. Or Jordan Collier. Or Chicken George. Or Diana, queen of the lizard-Nazis.
-
I was generous and watched the first episode + 10 minutes, and that was all I could handle. Kill it with fire.
-
Go out and make your own website then if you know so damned much. The whining on this site and self importance of people who comment here is absolutely mind boggling. God I can't wait until the internet has an age limit like drinking.
-
NBC sucks donkey balls.
This is a good show. I really like this show. PLUS that blonde babe is smokin' HOT!!
NBC renews CHUCK but treats this show like crap?? Go Figure!!! -
But I never saw it living past this summer, which is probably a good thing anyway. It's palatable summer tv. Nothing about it makes me want to especially continue watching other than what else is on? It's getting more interesting the more tidbits they reveal... but to be honest, if they didn't promise to "reveal all" by the end of the summer run, there's no way on God's good earth I'd still be watching it.
-
Some of the characters might not work but at least they don't dick around!I thought it was inspiring to see a character react in a real way certain situations. Take for example the desk clerk first appearance.A)The desk clerk was beaten and force to the "barrier".B) As he ran, that "Ferris Brueller" guy gave chase because he figure the "mastermind" would drop the "barrier" and he was right!Seriously, who wouldn't do that in a real world situation? Plus seeing who's the mole and not making it a lingering plot device is another win, IMO.Whatever the case, its better than that estrogen-based, Sopranos ripoff on ABC!
-
As anyone knows, Persons Unknown was always and only intended to be a one-off runoff, summer miniseries, 13 eps ONLY, to conclude when the summer is over.
As anyone who watches the show knows, Christopher Mquarrie pretty much ripped off LOST w/ the show (even though I still dig it, shoot me), and just like LOST, its a single-story serial, with a definite beginning, middle, and end.
The show feels like its going to a single conclusion, and has always felt that way.
Considering all 13 eps seem to be finished, I really don't know what the point of this article here at AICN was other than to give the fans of the show some discomfort in the idea that we might not even see it reach its 13-episode intended run all the way to the end, which would suck.
But comeon, what possible replacement could they put in its place to make some huge summer numbers? Oh wait.. nm, this is NBC. My bad. -
I don't give a shit about it's long term prospects. All I was ever expecting was 13 episodes and I damn well better get them. This moving it to Saturday is bullshit. They can't even keep a fucking show on the same night for 13 lousy weeks??? Fucking morons. If I wasn't enjoying it so much I'd stop watching it just out of spite. I fucking hate it when networks make their viewers chase a show all over the damn schedule. It's just plain fucking rude. Can't wait to see what kind of unwatchable crap they'll be filling that Monday night timeslot with.
-
Given it's a 13-episode series, and intended to be a 13-episode series with a predestined beginning, middle, and end, how fast should it move? What should have happened by now that hasn't? Four episodes, 30% in, and we know who the mole is, and a general idea of who or what is involved. They've basically eliminated one of the seven prisoners. I must have missed that kind of info being dumped out and resolutions made 30% into Lost, or The Prisoner (original series), or Babylon 5, or even FlashForward.
With what we were told in the last episode, it seems like a bigger-scale version of the movie, "The Killing Room."
The main problems, IMO, are that most of the characters aren't particularly likable (Graham, and Moira when she isn't pathologically lying, are the exceptions), and the whole thing seems unbelievably expensive/elaborate for whatever Process they're trying to achieve. Surrounding the whole town with an underground steel wall? Okay... -
the town. The mole just has to influence the team to go in the right direction, and they can find a much smaller steel barrier, and naturally assume that it surrounds the town.
-
...influence them to go in the right direction? Or stop them from trying a different direction after the first attempt fails? It's not like they haven't suspected a mole anyway, so why would they trust what one person influences them to do?
-
if continued viewings of the episodes of Hulu will help it's ratings? 'Cause I know I ain't no Neilson...
I do believe this show was conceived as a mini-series (was touted as such by NBC), but I just want to let them know that this is the type of stuff they should continue to make. Great show. -
is TOO SLOW. This show is like FastForward last fall--except with less action and an even slower pace.
-
The excellent Dollhouse actor Enver Gjokaj was on Lie To Me the other night, in a very Victor-like role. Herc never even mentioned it. (I suppose it's possible he didn't know.)
-
I've been watching Persons Unknown and it's not a bad show, but the biggest problem is that I don't think it should've been 13 episodes. It needed to be more like 10. Shows like this are like novels, where the story starts off slow, not wanting to give too much away. But with TV, you need to keep people interested. By just trying to develop the characters over the first few episodes, a lot of people get bored. You really need to throw people a bone to keep them interested. I'm actually all for one off series. I think that's one of the cool things about TV in the UK. You get a nice 8 episode arc and then they're out. It would be fun if we could have more of that in the US. The problem is, they only give his thrillers a one shot series run. Kingdom Hospital never made it to the end. Harper's Island, which had this big build up, sucked ass. Happy Town was given the axe. Person's Unknown is going to end up not finishing out. It really sucks, cause I think a lot of people don't watch these shows, knowing that they won't make it all the way through. I'm actually starting to not want to give them a chance, cause what's the point of investing the time, if the show never gets to the end? I think you need to take a different approach to shows like these. You need to go for a more Lost appoach. You can take your time with the characters, but answer a question, which leads to more questions about what's going on. I have a bad feeling that Person's Unknown is going to have a weak payoff and that's why they aren't explaining anything. It'll turn out to be a video game or even worse, we never find out why they were taken.
-
When you know that networks have, in the past, had episodes of a series already made, and they still refused to air them, even in a late night or traditionally poor ratings slot, it does make it difficult sometimes to invest in a new show, even if it is only 13 weeks.
-
I find it interesting that two History Channel shows is throwing the smack down on most network shows.
-
go out and form your own opinions if you can't manage to read the opinions of others without having a fucking aneurysm. The judgment and self-righteousness of people on this site is mind-boggling. God I can't wait until the Internet is finally designated as free so we don't have to worry about pricks like you around every corner putting so much weight and importance into nothing.
-
is going to be the network unknown if they keep putting out crap television
-
...you're right of course. And feel free to fire up the bong while watching and laughingly come up with your own nicknames. Great fun!
-
stop robbing them of their cognitive dissonance. they need it to survive these kinds of things
-
All the Heros are in a plane, it crashes, and they end up Lost on an island (that looks like southern California). Each week, as they struggle with a new survival task (find, food, fresh water, shelter), one of of them will suddenly vanish thru a trap door......to find themselves in Trump's fake boardroom, where he says "you're fired!"The final "surviving" hero wins: the actor gets out of any and all NBC contracts, so their career has a real chance of survival.
-
It doesn't matter how good or how bad the show might be... NBC has rendered itself unwatchable with the constant stream of garbage on the screen advertising other shows that nobody will watch.
Until they actually show a clean picture and let people enjoy the program, all of their efforts might as well be put into idiotic reality shows. -
...is there a channel that is NOT doing that? I can't find one.I wish film-makers with clout would force contracts for network airing of their film that mandate NO Watermarks and NO ADs on screen during the film.

That chick from BSG was kicking ass and taking names! Plus we got info about some of the characters and maybe their roles in this!Persons Unknown is an awesome summer series!
-
I just rewatched the pilot episode of Studio 60; and I still can't believe they canceled such a smartly written, well acted show, after one season. The reason the ratings weren't there is they gave it a shitty time slot, and then pulled it, for six weeks, starting in March, to air that dung heap called The Black Donnellys. The Black fucking Donnellys?!?!?!?! If they had canceled ER when they should have (several years before they actually did) the Thursday night at 10:00 slot would've saved the show. Instead they eventually gave the 10:00 pm slot entirely to that lantern-jawed freak; and they are still trying to recover, from that colossal screw up. NBC is done.
-
NBC is in no position to be cancelling good series at this point, no matter the ratings!
-
New prisoner joins the team, one is killed off, the mole and the insider duke it out and are themselves being observed and tested, and the mole has raised the suspicion of another prisoner.Hopefully NBC will at the very least allow the show to run its course on Saturday nights. However, I am reminded of how they handled "Kidnapped". 4 Episodes in weeknight primetime, 2 on Saturday, then the remaining episodes "available at NBC.com". I wonder whose idea that was. Take the few loyal tv viewers you have, those who still watch your show "live" on television, and force them to use, maybe even introduce them to, the very medium that is killing theirs. "Hey, all you who enjoyed watching this show on TV, start watching it on your computer. But only that show, ok? And don't get used to it as the internet is only a fad."
