AICN will see some of you at THE FAMOUS MONSTERS CONVENTION next Weekend!!!
Hey folks, Harry here... I'm giddy about this for a number of reasons. First... Holy Shit, I get to go to a FAMOUS MONSTERS CONVENTION!!! As a kid, I'd read about Famous Monsters Conventions, but my parents never had quite the cash to drive to New York City, where they always seemed to be. Instead, my parents threw their own conventions - which were pretty damn cool in their own right... but... FAMOUS MONSTERS CONVENTION always seemed like a dream to me. This also gets to be one of my Nephew's Birthday Presents (he's turning 10 tomorrow!) and thus far in his young life - through he's traveled the country with me... he's never done a convention. Why did I choose this? Well, you can't have your first convention be COMIC CON. That'd be like charging the beaches of Normandy without any training. You kinda need to find a smaller niche convention, get to a point where you don't feel intimidated talking to Con Guests - where you would feel... at home with the Convention Community that builds up... AND THEN, only after you've learned how to stand for hours on your feet, meet heroes at various stages of intoxication and have secured no less than 27 unpaid for autographs and a half dozen paid for autographs - can he graduate up to the utter madness that is COMIC CON. But for a first convention... I couldn't have a more perfect event to take him to. You see, KublaKhan (Gio's site name) - is a Zombie superfreak - and at this convention he can meet a ton of the talent behind his favorite Zombie films... Romero's Holy Trilogy, RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD and he himself will represent DAVEY, THE KID ZOMBIE from PATHOGEN - thus adding to the zombie cast of guests. I dare say he's the youngest Zombie guest at the convention. I just wanted to share the fact that I'll be at Famous Monsters Convention for July 9th through the 11th in Indianapolis, Indiana. In addition to me, Father Geek (Jay Knowles) will be attending - along with Capone (Steve Prokopy) - so feel free to come on down to the fabulous Wyndham Indianapolis-West next weekend. We'll be hanging out late every night and mixing it up with fans and guests - just as Uncle Forry would have intended! See you folks there!

I never understood why aintitcoolnews weren't at more conventions. Seems like you could great great info and news from the guests and yet meet fans of the website.
-
I always wondered why AICN wasn't at more conventions. You would think it would make sense. Meet the guests and get great info to post on the site, as well as meeting your own fans.
-
It was in 1975 I believe. He has a picture of him and Uncle Forry. He has often told me of his conversation, which included amongst other things the lack of an appearance of Godzilla and Gort. Forry explained there was a mix up in scheduling and apologized, and said not to worry though that the next convention would be soon enough and have plenty of cool stuff to make up for it. There never was another one, until now it seems. Wish it was here on the East Coast, I would take my Father in a second. Hope it's a good time.
-
I recall the magazine and it was great. Nice scary and fun images, but no gore. That was back when scary fantasy films ruled, not gore and horror films, which are trash, with equally terrible magazines devoted to them.

Anyway, somebody give us a "Famous Monsters" movie. I think it will be a huge hit, and can be the start of a film franchise!!!
-
Who's the guest of honor this year? Rob Zombie?
-
still don't know that I can be assed to go. The line-up is rather lackluster.
-
It will be worth it to get shitfaced with Tom Jane. I figure if Harry's there to get drunk with, then why the hell not? I still owe him for BNAT 4 and tickets to Bad Lieutenant at the Drafthouse.
-

-
Only 10, and I bet he's met some amazing people, yes?
-
and forgot about Forry's cameo, and good ol' Dick Miller giving him shit. Classic.
-
Johnny Depp as Dr Who in a few years in the movies. That would be awesome. RTD will be in charge though heh.
-
I might pay for a real Elvis or John Lennon. I would even pay for a Lincoln, Washington, Jefferson, etc. But I will never pay a living person for an autograph. If someone is shitty enough to want money for an autograph, then they don't deserve fans!
-
Every time you see a movie with an actor you're paying for their salaries. What's the difference?
-
freakin this past year at megacon in orlando, i was excited to meet billy dee williams. unfortunately (for him) that dick was charging $45 for just a FUCKING AUTOGRAPH!!!! how ridiculous is that shit? i always read stories about how greedy he was (hence not being twoface in B:F), but damn!!! i can only imagine how much seth greene and company had to pay him for all the shit he does on their shows lol
-
Why in the world is Rupert Boneham (Survivor: Pearl Islands, Survivor: All-Stars, Survivor: Heroes vs. Villains) going to be appearing autographs at a Famous Monsters Convention? I remember my media arts program looked into having Rupert give a guest lecture to college students at our university, but his fee was something like $12,000. What an ass.
-
Rupert lives in the Indy area, so they probably asked him just because he's close.
-
Wrestlers are scary.
-
I'm just curious if Bob, famous for his association with FM, will be attending. He's not listed on the "guest" page, but they seem to have organized it by film, and of course he's not a filmmaker.
-
The only thing that I feel is a real shame about this is...No Forry! I've always felt that it was an utter g@dd@mn shame that his museum was allowed to scatter to the four winds. Up for the highest bidder was the stuff that wasn't picked over. It is truly a crime that all of those rich hollywood douches that sang his praises didn't just purchase it all and open a museum. The things Forry Ackerman owned are irreplacable! And just like Indiana said; "They belong in a museum."
-
Same stale, generic guests who should pay YOU for the attention (I mean, c'mon...$25 a pop...including the guy who designed the end credits for NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD???). Only worthy "icon" is very voluptuous Cerina Vincent (Russ Meyer is crying in his grave); a good actress, she survived the parasitic Eli Roth (CABIN FEVER), aka Quentin's bitch. But it's the cleavage that eclipses Vincent's talent. She somehow invokes Jennifer Aniston though without the press whoring (when her films flop--a la Tom Cruise--Aniston resorts to desperation: "I'm gonna do a topless scene in my next film." Big fucking deal).

Kane Hodder is one of the very few on this list that I would consider a cool movie monster. Though, I suppose most of my favorite actors who I would consider "famous movie monsters" are long since dead. Still, could be a fun convention if they've got interesting stuff planned. I went to the Texas Frightmare Weekend recently, and they had a lot of the same guests (though not nearly as many). It was fun, but it was mainly just vendors and overpriced nobodies charging for a few scribbles. It was neat to be around a bunch of other horror fans, but it was overpriced and didn't deliver the goods. Though I'm jealous of the Return of the Living Dead reunion... I'd love to see them do a discussion panel or something. "Send ... more ... paramedics ..."

You can write to Kane Hodder through the mail and get an autograph for free. That guy is a signing machine.
-
I don't remember that being in the contract. I'm more an in-bed-by-8pm guy myself.
-
Shitballs. Unfortunately I forked over like 10 or 15 bucks to get his signature at the Texas Frightmare Weekend. Oh well, the price included a nice 8x10 and I got to take a picture with him. The guy is a freaking hoss. His biceps are like beer kegs.
-
Chained up like King Kong? That would be great!
-

Following your line of thinking ... if a man or woman drives a taxi, they should charge their friends a fare each time they're in the car? If I'm a chef, should I charge my neighbors for the Memorial Day backyard bar-b-que?

Paul McCartney, probably one of the biggest living legends not only gave me an autograph, but took the time to talk for a moment.

Look, most big stars make beaucoup bucks and don't need the money, and if your star has fallen so far that you feel the need to charge for an autograph, then perhaps you need to start losing some of that diva attitude and work on your PR for a possible comeback.

-
It think meeting celebs I like is cool, but if it's in person and they aren't at a table signing, I'll just talk to them, but I have no prob paying some dude that was on Trek 20 bucks for a sig.
-
He seems like a down to Earth guy. Most autographs I have were free in the mail, but I've paid for some big ones because the person meant something to me or because I know I'll never meet them.
-

I understand where you're coming from, but we obviously have different mindsets on this particular subject. Besides, I much prefer a civilized conversation than some of the - here I go showing my age - muckraking I witness in a lot of talkbacks.

Perhaps it's the term talkback that unleashes the worst in people. I hate it when my kids "talk back"!

Thanks for keeping it civil.

Met Forry and ran the slide projector for him; giving a slideshow of his house/museum
-
The new relaunch is just another cheap exploitation of the name, bought as "a brand". The owners troll talkbacks and belittle fans that see them for what they are. From Dusk Till Con had to delete a bunch of exchanges between the promoter of the con and some other troll who allegedly had an inside scoop that a bunch of they're guests don't even get in till Friday night and are leaving early Sunday morning. Met the head guy at Comic Con and he knew jack shit about horror. Used the phrase "FM brand" like 10 times in conversation though.
-
I am definitely an exhibit. A cautionary tale. A very interesting strange looking man. People take photos next to me. That's kinda weird sometimes. But the best thing about being an exhibit is you get to see everyone that wants to see you. And you can interact with them. Sometimes they feed you. Give you drink. Always good company. And the spectators that come to view the exhibit marked HEADGEEK. Well, they rule. They give me a lifetime of stories.

you'll sleep when I've had my way with ya

I_Max_U_Mini, sometimes, these people HAVE to charge...
by Bullet_time_Facehugger
...because its part of their convention appearance. The promoters pay them a flat fee, and then they take all the money made from the autographs, pics, etc.

Why am I only hearing about this now that I have already booked my trip to L.A. on that weekend. CRAP!!!

I work in the convention circuit, and what you said isn't really accurate. Every celebrity is different, but most of them get what's known as a guaranty just for showing up and signing autographs during certain hours. In other words, the convention owner promises them they'll make at least a certain ammount of money for the weekend (anything from $5,000 to $30,000 depending on the celebrity), and if the celebrity fails to earn that much selling autographs (even though they've stayed at their table signing during the agreed upon times) and merchandise then the convention must pay them the remainder of the promised ammount. The convention owners DO NOT take all the money they make signing.
-
I know what you're saying. I'm simply stating my preference NOT to get autographs from living people with cash. Besides, how much of that "income" do they actually report to the IRS?
-
Hey Harry, I attended the FM con in 93 with Forry, Bradbury and Harryhausen. Great memories. You'll have a blast! Long Live FM.
-
I'll either be lurking around the Fright Night Film Fest booth or trying to hide from Harry who wants to kick my ass for making his already busy life a complete slave-to-work by accidentally pushing him into new time consuming projects. Anyway, having a new Famous Monsters convention to attend is kind of cool in itself, and it's within driving distance for me. I look forward to meeting any AICN readers who may also attend.

You old-school Hoosiers know what I'm talking about. Would love to meet that guy but I live in DC now!

I'll be there. Likely drunk off my ass for most of the weekend, but wow, seeing Sammy Terry...well that will be something.
-
Dont fucking buy one! But leave the fans who do alone. I have promoted cons in the Chicagoland area in the past and often the guests only get hotel room and tranpotation covered. So the money they make from the autographs is a source of income for them. Now there are some celebs like Traci Lords and Robert Vaughn who act like assholes when singing the pics and frankly I dont know why they show up. But others, like Thomas Jane and Kane Hodder, LOVE thier fans and it really shows.

Jesus, a faded memory. Nice mag but the guy was always bitchin' and nobody really liked him. He fucked-up relations with George Lucas (dropping spoilers and the ending of RETURN/JEDI only weeks before the film opened) and even offended Steve Spielberg (who prohibited Clarke any exclusive coverage of JURASSIC PARK). Anyway, I heard that Clarke committed suicide years ago. Somehow, not surprised...
