PARTY DOWN Is Partied Out!!
I am – Hercules!!
Like Rob Thomas’ “Veronica Mars” and both versions of Rob Thomas’ “Cupid,” Rob Thomas’ “Party Down” has met a premature death.
Blame the Starz sitcom’s low ratings, and the fact that Jane Lynch (Fox's “Glee”), Adam Scott (NBC's “Parks and Recreation,” “Pirahna 3-D”), Ryan Hansen (NBC’s “Friends With Benefits”) and Lizzie Caplan (who’s getting so much movie work -- including a lead role in an upcoming Bruce Willis thriller -- she had to turn down the lead in CBS’s “Mad Love”) are all finding better-paying jobs in movies and TV shows more people will watch.
Starz also cancelled its horrible new sitcom "Gravity," whose ratings were even lower than "Party Down's."

Looks like Starz can join other dope-headed networks in the conversation of dipshit moves relating to canceling great shows!
-
The show was HBO quality, really too good for Starz where it had zero publicity. I only knew about it because I'd read Lynch and Scott left it for other shows that I DID watch and seeing that Rob Thomas was involved got me interested. Having seen the DVD, it's great, I am sorry it's already been killed and I hope season 2 makes it to DVD as well. Like Better Off Ted, it'll be one of those 2 season gems I know deserved more than it got.
-
But it sounds like the entire cast (excepting Martin Starr) wasn't goingto be back anyways. On a side note, Megan Mullaly (sp?) was a pleasant surprise this season. I didn't even realize it was her until an episode or two in.
-
Party Down was only the funniest show on TV... that i watched through Netflix. Maybe a cable channel that doesn't suck can pick it up
-
Who knew?
-
New, new Ron will not be pleased at it's cancellation.
-
You basically said why the show was canceled. I read somewhere it was getting around 100k viewers. That is terrible for any show, cable or otherwise. With people finding other ways to watch shows, more and more quality shows will be getting the boot for those that bring in a profit.
-
the level of fun and wit was totally on par with curb.
-
this is upsetting for me. such a good show, every character was good. and season 2 stepped it up. man... i wanna yell at someone, but i guess it's no ones fault... im just gonna really miss this show.
-
I tried watching part of it on Netflix Stream, I had to stop it after 10 minutes. It was supposed to be a comedy? Seriously?
-
Then they can cancel all the rest of their original programming.
-
Gonna miss it. At least the season 2 finale was a cool send-off.
-
"is this jizz?!"
-
That song at the wedding was hilarious. Great show, sorry to see it go.
-
This is terrible, terrible news.
-
Has absolutely perfect tits. Great bod on that girl.
-
gets to be great on two amazing shows where everyone else but him goes on to have huge careers.
-
Three RDD's and their pay docked for perpetiuty. At least Herc gave this show a talkback now, which almost makes up for the times he shunned it in these past 2 months, and got me kicked off AICN for 3 months for daring to mention a PD talkback in a Dollhouse thread.
-
Not even enough to fill the old Giants Stadium. At least the show went out on its shield and I can live with it the way it ended. And br1947, Gravity WAS a steaming pile.
-
"[Ayn Rand] wrote about how awesome awesome people are."
-
Too bad. Ken Marino finally had the perfect role.
-
ouch,i really liked this show alot,i'm glad the actors involved are being recognized, but i will miss it
-
That Fred Savage was a director for the series. No reason other than it makes me smile.

Rob Thomas: We were headed for season 3 before Albrecht showed
by pennsydeux
From Alan Sepinwall (Newark Star Ledger's) interview with him earlier today:
""No one on our side is particularly shocked by the news," Thomas said. "Frankly, the waiting has been excruciating, and there's a certain amount of relief in knowing and being able to move on."
"Party Down" had been in a holding pattern for months. The second season finished filming late in '09, and new Starz president Chris Albrecht - who was not with the network when the show was developed, and who was at HBO back when that channel passed on an earlier iteration of the series - wasn't in a hurry to order a third, even though all the actors were on one-year contracts and available to take other jobs that would prevent them from returning to the show. (It had already happened with Jane Lynch, and it happened this year with Adam Scott and Ryan Hansen.)
Albrecht said in January that he wanted to see how the show performed when it came back and... it did not perform well. "Party Down" was one of the funniest comedies on television, but it was also one of the least-watched. The season finale drew an average of 74,000 viewers, according to TV By the Numbers. That is not a good total.
(Even worse: the 54,000 who watched the finale of "Gravity" that aired immediately afterwards, which led Starz to cancel that as well.)
"After careful consideration, we’ve decided not to continue on with subsequent seasons of 'Party Down' and 'Gravity,'” Starz executive vice president of programming Stephan Shelanski said in a statement. “We’re grateful to everyone involved in the shows, and are proud to have had them on the channel. Starz remains committed to aggressively expanding our original programming lineup."
"We were heading for a third season before Albrecht was hired. There's little to no doubt that we were going to get one until Chris came in. But I do think if we had done better numbers, Chris would've kept us. I don't think Chris wanted to come in and clean house. I just don't think he had quite the emotional attachment that people who had been at Starz through the birth of the show had towards it."
I think he's being very diplomatic about it, IMO. -
I love this show. One of the best things on TV. So sad.
-
I understand no one watches it, or Better Off Ted, so they canceled it, but it's a shame that these shows aren't appreciated more.
-
Season 2 was pretty hit or miss. Some of the episodes were very, very funny. Others were really, really bad. But I would love it if they somehow made a Ron Donald spin-off.
-
Oh she is fine!!!!
-
I guess that's better than The Office: two amazing seasons (2 and 3) and then several years of mediocrity. The writing was on the wall when everyone from the show was leaving to do other stuff. Adam Scott is pretty good on Parks and Rec so far, so at least there's something for Party Down fans to watch. And hopefully Hollywood keeps putting Lizzie Caplan in things.
-
a sensible executive would have left the show on the bubble for two more weeks. Emmy nominations could have turned some of the ratings issue around in season 3, and once your in with the emmys, you often keep getting nominations even if you don't keep earning them. At least Party Down gave the network a chance to get the network name out on awards nights. Making an effort to pair this show with something watchable probably wouldn't have hurt either.
-
I guess i saw this coming, but still it's really annoying. I mean it had a good ending I guess but still it was such a great show, one of the few funny things on air
-
sucks. Funniest show on TV. True that the promotion for the show sucked. I still don't know what time or day the show aired... I would just watch on Starz on Demand once a week.
-
Such a funny show
-
Nothing like news such as this to pick up one's spirits, yes? :(((
-
Guess he's the reason why Starz is now cropping movies...considering this bozo came from HBO. Guess it's time to drop Starz too.
-
And they did. Though Adam Scott should be getting his own show not prolonging the life of that terrible abortion on NBC.
-
was at least a decent way to end the series. shame this didn't get better ratings, show was wicked funny.
-
With network TV bogged down with cliche sitcoms, reality tv and Family Guy, cable programming has become the last refuge for quality television. While not a ratings darling, Party Down did have critical acclaim and a cult following... to compare it success to that of a show with a wider AVAILABLE audience is moronic. That being said - I can only hope that they are smart enough to replace the hour of programming that they have freed up with something quality - possibly from one of the second or third bananas from Sopranos, the Wire, or Dexter. It seems that many of them are getting deals these days.
PS. I do hope that whatever show that may be has some good action and many many titty scenes.
PPS. Preferably with Lizzy Caplan. -
Her character made me want to throw things at the TV screen, especially as she was paired with the vapid Ryan Kwanten. Bleh. And when will various networks realize that Rob Thomas has, like, 1 1/2 seasons in him for each of his ideas? Probably about the same time the networks stop giving jobs to Brannon Braga and Marti Noxon. Double bleh.
-
More of AnnoyYou forcing the hate...keep it up troll.
-
is not a word!
-
I can understand why Hercules thought "Gravity" was horrible if he thought it was supposed to be a sitcom. Or is this Herc once again proving he needs to go back to his TV Journalism 101 textbook to brush up on the section covering show classifications? Simply because a show is only 30 minutes and contains elements of humour, does not necessarily make it a sitcom. Just like how an hour-long drama that has some comedic moments doesn't automatically make that show a Dramedy.
-
Is so unbelievably awful. The following shows suck and are NOT funny:
Glee
30 Rock
The Office (US)
-
The worst offender: SNL...I cant wait until this generation of 'Comedians' dies out. What a sad state we are in comedy-wise
-
and Always Sunny cameos.
-
But we did get to see some fuckin' tatties. and goddamn.
-
Another amazing comedy lost while Two and a Half Men remains king. What is wrong with our audience?
But really, who watches Starz? Netflix posted new episodes of PD weekly. How many people watched it there?
