Elijah Wood To Star In FX Doggie Sitcom??

Published at:  Jun 30, 2010 2:29:17 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

“Lord of the Rings” icon Elijah Wood has landed the lead in “Wilfred,” an FX sitcom pilot about a man and a dog.

Wood would play the man and Australian actor Jason Gann would play the canine, described as a mix of Labrador Retriever and “Russell Crowe on a bender.” Not too different from Gollum if you think about it.

It’s based on an Australian series Gann co-created and starred in. David Zuckerman (“The Big House,” “Family Guy,” “American Dad”) wrote the American version of the pilot.

The Australian version:

    How sad....

    by bodacious_crumb

I guess movie roles for ex-Hobbits have dried up? At least Dominic was able to parlay into Lost for awhile and FF briefly.

Elijah can play a vampire in the next shitty installment of Twilight and have the tween's/twink's hearts fluttering again.

Is the guy in the dog suit supposed to be a dog

    by big jim

or is the girl just really stupid and thinks the guy in the dog suit is a real dog? I admit, I didn't watch the entire clip.

Australians were put on the far side of the world...

    by tandemar

for a number of very good reasons.
They're all dumb as stumps, their accent makes them sound even dumber and they know fuck all about anything.
This is not funny, but to them is probably a real side-splitter.

    by jaka

I mean, really? Seems destined to fail, but it's so absurd that I'll definitely check it out if it actually gets broadcast. It's one of those things that could be interesting because it's totally different and surreal, or suck because it's totally different and ridiculous.

    Greg the Bunny...

    by cyan09

I hear that show is actually getting a spin-off about the ape puppet, Warren I think it was, sort of a spoof on celebrity rehab shows. I think it's going to be on MTV though, so prob not going to be as good as it could have been.

    Another pointless remake.

    by thecomedian77

And yes, it IS funny. Maybe it's not as easy to get watching an out of context clip, maybe it's too out there for Americans (I'm a Brit myself). I've watched 3 eps so far and am loving it.

Don't get it? Go back to family guy. Wait a minute...anyone questioning 'is he a dog or not, I don't get it!?' If you can 'get' Stewie & Brian, you shouldn't have too much trouble wrapping your brain around Wilfred (which is better than most American comedies btw).

i'm an aussie and i watch SBS!

    by potatino

it was on SBS over here in australia for a few years. I've seen pretty much every episode and reckon the australian version is brilliant. I think the best description I've read is the guy in the dog suit is like Chopper in a dog suit. Very dark very weird. Highly recommended. Kind of looking forward to see how the us version turns out. Could work a treat considering they have the same actor in the dog suit. Oh and I think season one and two are out on dvd here in australia if anyone is interested.

I asked if he was supposed to be a real a dog or not

    by big jim

because I couldn't tell from what I watched. As soon as it started I was reminded of that SNL skit with Megan Fox, where she was living with a dude who had convinced her he was Optimus Prime. It was really just a guy in an Optimus mask who wanted to be live with Megan Fox. Fox brings home a date and his reactions to this fake Optimus, and the way she was with him, was similar to the guy in the video with the dog. I couldn't tell if he was simply disturbed by the dog's un-dog like behavior (he's never met a dog that acted like that) or if he was baffled that this guy who was so obviously a man in a dog suit, had convinced his date he was a real dog. The look on his face didn't come across to me as one who didn't like dogs, but rather as someone completely baffled and bewildered, maybe even a bit horrified, at what he was seeing. A mix of "I can't believe she's this stupid" and "I can't believe this guy is getting away with it" and "this asshole's totally going to blow my chances with the girl".
