Fired HEROES Writer-Producer Jeph Loeb To Run Marvel Entertainment's TV Division!!

Published at:  Jun 29, 2010 12:09:01 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

Jeph Loeb, one of the senior writer-producers NBC ordered fired in 2008 from “Heroes” (to little avail), has been appointed to oversee Marvel Entertainment’s new TV division.

Loeb, whose screenwriting career launched in the 1980s with the screenplays for “Teen Wolf” and the Whoopi Goldberg vehicle “Burglar” (and a story that formed the basis of “Commando”), went on to write four episodes of “Smallville” and four episodes of “Heroes.” He also briefly served as supervising producer for one dozen 2006 “Lost” episodes before leaving to join “Heroes.”

When somebody points out to Tim Kring that “Heroes” seems to lift key elements from famous comic books, Kring often protests that he doesn’t read comics. Loeb, however, has a long history reading and writing comics.

Loeb has written for such Marvel funnybooks as Cable, X-Force, X-Man, Avengers, Captain America, Iron Man, Fantastic Four, Wolverine and Hulk. Most tragically, he took over The Ultimates from Mark Millar in 2007 and fucking ruined it.

Let's not pretend that Heroes sucking was Loeb's fault. The guy was let go and the show got even worse. Kring needs to take all the blame on that one.

And of course, as usual, Herc shows he knows very little about comics and ignores the great work Loeb did at DC in his credits.

Used to be a force, Long Halloween, Dark Victory, Superman for all Seasons. Then Loeb's writing got lazy as he tried to make a formula out of it and milk it for as much as it's worth. Not sure what my point is, I guess just to say the guy isn't a complete hack, though he does seem to write mostly terrible stuff in this part of his career.

    by eyegore

It is a counter for the people who've elevated the art by calling them Graphic Novels, that you feel the need to take the art form down a peg? I don't see why you find it necessary, Hercules, to insult the medium every time you mention it. Why do you do this?

There's an "insult" for everything. Wouldn't take it too personally. Besides, I'd take Carl Barks's UNCLE SCROOGE over 90% of today's "graphic novels" and by God, that's a FUNNYBOOK.

I admit that I don't know much about Hollywood, where phrases like "fail upwards" and The Peter Principle are applied as often as Botox, but can more junk like Heroes possibly be a good thing? A flood of crap (and let's not fool ourselves about Jeph Loeb's depressing work product) can only make it harder for good, interesting super hero television to be approved in the future. I would have been a lot more intrigued by "No Ordinary Family" if Heroes hadn't shat in a corner of my imagination like a crackhead in a warehouse.

Everything else that forms the basis of his opinion he gets from lurking at the boards at comicbookresources. Seriously, the only people who know a thing or two about comics on here are the @$$holes and they get so far up their heads into immediately negatively dogpilling on whatever is popular, that it gets hair-pullingly aggravating. Loeb was a great writer...

    by supermanismygod

But there was a very significant event that separated the Jeph Loeb of TLH/Dark Victory/DD Yellow/Hush, and the Jeph Loeb of Ultimates 3/Red Hulk/Ultimatum. It's an awful thing to say, but the death of his son seemed to negatively affect his writing.

We might disagree on his stories before Sam lost his battle with cancer, but I loved them. And I've read a lot of his stuff since, and it's just not the same. So I can't blame the guy, obviously.

Hopefully this works out. Loeb definitely loves comics, and this job he's taking is a lot different than writing about a Red Hulk or killing half the Ultimate universe. So good luck to him.

It was a great sequel which say the transformation of Gotham as we know it today. Not many crime bosses mostly the freaks are left. The Death of the Graysons panel is worth the price of admission alone. I am on the fence about Loeb. He can't be any worse then Queseda and he has done great work in the past. I just think sometimes he needs a good editor to reel him in at times. I don't want to speculate on if his writing has gone down hill due to the death of his son. It were me, I don't know if I could write again and if I did, my work probably would be vastly different.

    by big jim

found in Smallville. It's a Superman show (or Superboy) without the Superman character (the costume). Flash is called Impulse, Aquaman is A.C., Martian Manhunter is only referred to by the name John Jones. Characters they have no plans, or deals, to produce will be available to appear, as well as minor villains. Most likely any mid-size heroes will be represented without using the hero name (only their given name). You might see Nova, or Moon Knight, in some incarnation, but they will go by the names Richard Rider and Marc Spector (or Jake Lockley, or Steven Grant, ...).At least that's how I see it.As for rights right now held by other studios like, say, Fox and Sony, probably not. Although, it'd be great if they could. X-Men would work much better as a TV show. I think their first order of business should be a live-action TV show based on Strikeforce Morituri. There's a premise that would be great for a serialized show that pulls out all the stops for season premieres, sweeps, and finales. Plus actor contracts won't bankrupt the studio as most won't be around for more than one season.

Ultimate X is great, and his current Ultimates work isn't bad (Is it Ultimates or Ultimate Avengers? I can never remember the name of the one he's writing and Millar's writing...). I like the current Hulk storyline, but I know most don't. I wish people wouldn't call him a hack, I understand if you don't care for his work but Hack is such a dumb word to use. It implies the person can't write at all, and that's not true.

    by big jim

Nor are reprinted collections of comic books (even those bound in hardcover). Even Watchmen, the (supposedly) "most celebrated Graphic Novel of all time", is not a Graphic Novel. It's a 12-part mini-series reprinted in trade paperback. And, as sure-as-shit, Seth Cohen's Atomic County wasn't a Graphic Novel, despite how many times he called it that. The OC is to blame for the term becoming a socially "acceptable" way of saying "Comic Books", despite its inaccuracy.

Graphic Novels vs. Comic Books vs. TPB's

    by mrekoletmelive

It breaks down like this: "graphic novel" was a term originally coined by the late, great Will Eisner because people didn't want to buy his "comic book" stories because they thought "comic book" sounded juvenile. What a "graphic novel" actually is, is a comic book originally printed as a self-contained story. "The Killing Joke" is a graphic novel. Trade paperbacks are collections of stories that were originally printed as individual comic books, or "floppies" as they are sometimes called. "Graphic Novel" became something that book stores could put as a label on their shelves so people could buy a comic book and not feel immature, because supposedly only children read comic books. At least that was the perception until about say 10 or so years ago when the comic book movie boom began. But for the record, I'm 34 and I read COMIC BOOKS. I've been reading COMIC BOOKS since I was 8, and I'll be reading COMIC BOOKS when I'm 90.

Not necessarily about Loeb. He is, however, probably the best man for the job. Let's face it, he's had his fingers in the comic AND television pies, and is probably the best qualified. I didn't read anywhere up there that he'd be WRITING EVERYTHING. What's exciting to me is that Marvel really seems to have a plan for getting as much of their universe out there in as many mediums as possibe. For a fella that's been reading comics for 3 decades, that's cool news. Think about it. There's a lot of potential there. I'll back up Big Jim and say Strikeforce: Morituri is just about perfect for television. What about Alias? Moon Knight, Cloak and Dagger, Power Man/Iron Fist...there's so many. Hell, even a Marvels miniseries. How cool would that be? How about a Punisher series on cable that actually tells gritty, adult stories with that character? BRING IT ON. Marvel/Disney is throwing down the gauntlet DC/Warners. What's it gonna be? Of course, it could all suck. Time will tell, but I'm optimistic today. Or just drunk.
