Fired HEROES Writer-Producer Jeph Loeb To Run Marvel Entertainment's TV Division!!
I am – Hercules!!
Jeph Loeb, one of the senior writer-producers NBC ordered fired in 2008 from “Heroes” (to little avail), has been appointed to oversee Marvel Entertainment’s new TV division.
Loeb, whose screenwriting career launched in the 1980s with the screenplays for “Teen Wolf” and the Whoopi Goldberg vehicle “Burglar” (and a story that formed the basis of “Commando”), went on to write four episodes of “Smallville” and four episodes of “Heroes.” He also briefly served as supervising producer for one dozen 2006 “Lost” episodes before leaving to join “Heroes.”
When somebody points out to Tim Kring that “Heroes” seems to lift key elements from famous comic books, Kring often protests that he doesn’t read comics. Loeb, however, has a long history reading and writing comics.
Loeb has written for such Marvel funnybooks as Cable, X-Force, X-Man, Avengers, Captain America, Iron Man, Fantastic Four, Wolverine and Hulk. Most tragically, he took over The Ultimates from Mark Millar in 2007 and fucking ruined it.

...he'll spend less time writing comic books. 'Fucking Ruined', as it pertains to Ultimates, is a massive understatement.
-
Congrats Jeph! Don't fuck shit up!!!

"Jeff"? Or "Jep" with a silent h?

Loeb is possibly the worst dialogue writer in comic book history
by pollaxt
But still, more Marvel on TV is a good thing.

Fired HEROES Writer-Producer Jeph Loeb To Ruin Marvel’s New TV D
by jzm
there i fixed it for ya herc.
-
Well I imagine he's not writing anything. I imagine he will be perfect when it comes to making decisions on who to actually hire to write the stuff.
-
Let's not pretend that Heroes sucking was Loeb's fault. The guy was let go and the show got even worse. Kring needs to take all the blame on that one.
And of course, as usual, Herc shows he knows very little about comics and ignores the great work Loeb did at DC in his credits. -
Not good at all for Marvel.
-
Used to be a force, Long Halloween, Dark Victory, Superman for all Seasons. Then Loeb's writing got lazy as he tried to make a formula out of it and milk it for as much as it's worth. Not sure what my point is, I guess just to say the guy isn't a complete hack, though he does seem to write mostly terrible stuff in this part of his career.
-
It is a counter for the people who've elevated the art by calling them Graphic Novels, that you feel the need to take the art form down a peg? I don't see why you find it necessary, Hercules, to insult the medium every time you mention it. Why do you do this?
-
There's an "insult" for everything. Wouldn't take it too personally. Besides, I'd take Carl Barks's UNCLE SCROOGE over 90% of today's "graphic novels" and by God, that's a FUNNYBOOK.
-
...it's amazing how people with bad track records can do so well in Hollywood.
-
but without The Long Halloween there would be no Batman Begins.
-
I admit that I don't know much about Hollywood, where phrases like "fail upwards" and The Peter Principle are applied as often as Botox, but can more junk like Heroes possibly be a good thing? A flood of crap (and let's not fool ourselves about Jeph Loeb's depressing work product) can only make it harder for good, interesting super hero television to be approved in the future. I would have been a lot more intrigued by "No Ordinary Family" if Heroes hadn't shat in a corner of my imagination like a crackhead in a warehouse.
-
Loeb did a brief stint on Buffy season 8.
-
seems to me that being even tangentially involved in a dozen episodes of Lost would be something praiseworthy.
-
And, shockingly, you don't mention that he worked on Buffy comics as well. And worked on a Buffy animated series too. Which you pimped before. Of course, asking for impartiality from one of your posts about Loeb, etc. is about as fruitful as looking for a good draft of Alien Resurrection.
-
Astonishing X-Men Vol 1 & 2. Buffy season 8. Whatever Serenity comics Dark Horse puts out, like, 3 times a year. Mark Millar's Ultimates run/Wanted/Kick Ass. Everything else that forms the basis of his opinion he gets from lurking at the boards at comicbookresources. Seriously, the only people who know a thing or two about comics on here are the @$$holes and they get so far up their heads into immediately negatively dogpilling on whatever is popular, that it gets hair-pullingly aggravating. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills here!
-
He keeps popping up everywhere yet he's...not that talented a writer.
-
Loeb wrote a few good comics a long time ago, and has been pumping out pure shit ever since. Ultimates? Red Hulk? Just fucking awful.
-
Could Marvel make a live action X-Men, FF, Spider-Man or Daredevil for TV with no restrictions? Could they make more of a marvel universe show that incorporates anyone and everyone before they do something stupid like sell away rights to chunks of their universe to a bunch of different studios who won't ever work together?
-
Make it so!
-
But there was a very significant event that separated the Jeph Loeb of TLH/Dark Victory/DD Yellow/Hush, and the Jeph Loeb of Ultimates 3/Red Hulk/Ultimatum. It's an awful thing to say, but the death of his son seemed to negatively affect his writing.
We might disagree on his stories before Sam lost his battle with cancer, but I loved them. And I've read a lot of his stuff since, and it's just not the same. So I can't blame the guy, obviously.
Hopefully this works out. Loeb definitely loves comics, and this job he's taking is a lot different than writing about a Red Hulk or killing half the Ultimate universe. So good luck to him. -
They must give really good head is all I can think it is.
-
Hush? Terrible. Ultimates 3? Disaster. The "color" minis he did for Marvel - "Blue," "Yellow," "Grey" and whatever the Cap one was called were pretty good.
Maybe Marvel should hire Tim Sale as Loeb's assistant to keep him on the track of quality and off the track of suck. -
But even he couldn't save that one from being awful.
-
It was a great sequel which say the transformation of Gotham as we know it today. Not many crime bosses mostly the freaks are left. The Death of the Graysons panel is worth the price of admission alone. I am on the fence about Loeb. He can't be any worse then Queseda and he has done great work in the past. I just think sometimes he needs a good editor to reel him in at times. I don't want to speculate on if his writing has gone down hill due to the death of his son. It were me, I don't know if I could write again and if I did, my work probably would be vastly different.
-
promote the guy who wrote ultimates 3 and ultimatum
-
...it's hard to believe its the same guy who wrote "Hush" and "Long Halloween". Ultimates and Hulk are absolutely abyssmal. This is just Marvel's way of keeping him from going back to DC. Although, I understand that Loeb and Grant Morrison don't like each other, so that might explain why he won't go back to DC.
-
I agree. He hasn't been the same since he lost his son. I hope he recovers, but it must be tough.
-
peaked a long fucking time ago. Though for some reason people still think they have some kind of talent or merit so they keep getting jobs that they inevitably fail miserably at. Retirement, fucker. Look into it.
-
found in Smallville. It's a Superman show (or Superboy) without the Superman character (the costume). Flash is called Impulse, Aquaman is A.C., Martian Manhunter is only referred to by the name John Jones. Characters they have no plans, or deals, to produce will be available to appear, as well as minor villains. Most likely any mid-size heroes will be represented without using the hero name (only their given name). You might see Nova, or Moon Knight, in some incarnation, but they will go by the names Richard Rider and Marc Spector (or Jake Lockley, or Steven Grant, ...).At least that's how I see it.As for rights right now held by other studios like, say, Fox and Sony, probably not. Although, it'd be great if they could. X-Men would work much better as a TV show. I think their first order of business should be a live-action TV show based on Strikeforce Morituri. There's a premise that would be great for a serialized show that pulls out all the stops for season premieres, sweeps, and finales. Plus actor contracts won't bankrupt the studio as most won't be around for more than one season.
-
This guy could suck lemonade from a toilet.
-
Dark Victory was a long time ago.
-
Ultimate X is great, and his current Ultimates work isn't bad (Is it Ultimates or Ultimate Avengers? I can never remember the name of the one he's writing and Millar's writing...). I like the current Hulk storyline, but I know most don't. I wish people wouldn't call him a hack, I understand if you don't care for his work but Hack is such a dumb word to use. It implies the person can't write at all, and that's not true.
Someone brought up Winick, who between his first issue of Power Girl and Justice League: Generation Lost, is really kicking ass lately. -
Thy name be Loeb.
-
That's damn funny! I remember an old episode of MST3K where Joel said "Comic Books" and the robots went nuts saying, "They're GRAPHIC NOVELS!!!"Custodial Engineer - Janitor...Dude, they're comic books. I read them (in public!) and I'm not embarrased. Relax.
-
Are for guys that can't bring themselves to accept the look on their friend's faces when they say "comic book"
because they normally look at you like you have a dick growing out of your forehead...unless you say Graphic Novel....then they have no idea what you are talking about. -

...or comic book stories that are too large for the standard comic book format. Two separate things and neither are "funnybooks."
-
Nor are reprinted collections of comic books (even those bound in hardcover). Even Watchmen, the (supposedly) "most celebrated Graphic Novel of all time", is not a Graphic Novel. It's a 12-part mini-series reprinted in trade paperback. And, as sure-as-shit, Seth Cohen's Atomic County wasn't a Graphic Novel, despite how many times he called it that. The OC is to blame for the term becoming a socially "acceptable" way of saying "Comic Books", despite its inaccuracy.
-
But when he hits he knocks it out of the park. All of his "color" stories and his work on Batman will cement him as one of the best of the last 25 years.
-
Loeb: "I like what you're doing here but I have just one request...could you make it more boring?"
-
Loeb: "I understand kids today. In the film I wrote, Teen Wolf, I named the teen wolf's stylish friend "Styles." Try to come us with something that cool."
-
Loeb: "It was when I was writing the Whoopi Goldberg vehicle "Burglar" that I realized my true calling...to create genre entertainment that was not too hard and not too soft. The entertainment equivalent of an easy listening format."
-
Which is why Red Hulk turned out to be exactly who you thought it was.
-
where is the guy that wrote The Long Halloween, Hush, and Public Enemies gone?
-
Heroes would not have sucked.
-
I have all Loeb's stuff he did with Sale...because I'm a Tim Sale fan. But his complete rape of the Ultimates was a travesty, as was Ultimatum...worse than any old Image books writing. I avoid his work at all costs now.

His Buffy season 8 story pissed me off to no end.......
by lewarcher1949
"That's right, Willow, Cordelia's dead! Isn't that HIGH-larious? Now let's go piss on her grave".
Cordelia Chase's journey from spoiled two dimensional princess to hero was one of the great character development arc in TV history. It's bad enough that they killed her off. Then you have Loeb just writing writing all that development off in a stupid, pointless throwaway line in a stupid, pointless filler story. -
Met him in a professional setting- guy was perhaps the rudest asshole I've met in a long time, plus his writing sucks. Back off Marvel, you're deluding yourselves.
-
But to diss a guy's writing, and blame it on his dead son, is truly no class!
-
It breaks down like this: "graphic novel" was a term originally coined by the late, great Will Eisner because people didn't want to buy his "comic book" stories because they thought "comic book" sounded juvenile. What a "graphic novel" actually is, is a comic book originally printed as a self-contained story. "The Killing Joke" is a graphic novel. Trade paperbacks are collections of stories that were originally printed as individual comic books, or "floppies" as they are sometimes called. "Graphic Novel" became something that book stores could put as a label on their shelves so people could buy a comic book and not feel immature, because supposedly only children read comic books. At least that was the perception until about say 10 or so years ago when the comic book movie boom began. But for the record, I'm 34 and I read COMIC BOOKS. I've been reading COMIC BOOKS since I was 8, and I'll be reading COMIC BOOKS when I'm 90.
-
Not necessarily about Loeb. He is, however, probably the best man for the job. Let's face it, he's had his fingers in the comic AND television pies, and is probably the best qualified. I didn't read anywhere up there that he'd be WRITING EVERYTHING. What's exciting to me is that Marvel really seems to have a plan for getting as much of their universe out there in as many mediums as possibe. For a fella that's been reading comics for 3 decades, that's cool news. Think about it. There's a lot of potential there. I'll back up Big Jim and say Strikeforce: Morituri is just about perfect for television. What about Alias? Moon Knight, Cloak and Dagger, Power Man/Iron Fist...there's so many. Hell, even a Marvels miniseries. How cool would that be? How about a Punisher series on cable that actually tells gritty, adult stories with that character? BRING IT ON. Marvel/Disney is throwing down the gauntlet DC/Warners. What's it gonna be? Of course, it could all suck. Time will tell, but I'm optimistic today. Or just drunk.

Loeb is a terrible writer, but may be a good producer
by david cloverfield
Long Halloween and Superman for All Season are the least offenders. But Public Enemies? Come on, didn't make a lick of sense. However, Quesada is not the greatest creative mind either, but he kicks ass as CEO. He took a company barely above the water and turned it into a giant monster. I can see Loeb working out. Bring on that X-factor Investigations TV show! You can have Patrick Stewart for five minutes in the pilot to please the suits.
-
This is like finding out that Marvel will let FOX produce their catalog. Loeb can taint the best artist's in the industry. I never thought I would skip an Art Adams or Frank Cho book until Loeb teamed up with them.
