Carell Says Dunder Mifflin's Michael Scott Is Leaving THE OFFICE In Less Than A Year!!

Published at:  Jun 28, 2010 7:56:52 PM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

While working the red carpet Sunday night for “Despicable Me,” Steve Carell told an E! correspondent that next season will indeed be his last as Dunder Mifflin regional manager Michael Scott.

From Wanda Two Saints:

"I just think it's time," Steve told our Kristina Guerrero. "I want to fulfill my contract. When I first signed on I had a contract for seven seasons, and this coming year is my seventh. I just thought it was time for my character to go."

Carell also contends Scott will be little missed:

“They've incorporated so many new characters and so many new, great storylines that I have no doubt it'll continue as strong if not stronger than ever."

Carell and NBC execs have allowed in recent months that his departure after next season is a possibility.

NBC execs have indicated they're likely to continue "The Office," NBC's top-rated scripted show, whether Carell leaves or not.

Many believe this the less-funny "Office":

Many believe this Carell-free version the much funnier "Office":

I think the show has run out of steam. I used to be a huge fan of it (loved the UK one, too) but in recent years, I'm a bit bored with the drama they push instead of jokes. And some of the characters have evolved into people less fun than they were at the onset of the series. I could have stopped watching at the wedding episode and been fine for the rest of my life. (At least fine in regards to watching the Office. I'd still have other problems, boy howdy!)

That's the only way I would continue with the show after Michael Scott leaves. Yes, there are a ton of characters. Yes, Dwight running the Office on a permanent basis might be fun, but once Michael Scott leaves I'm out too. Unless Colbert because I could see him pull it off, or Brent comes to the USA. Loved season 2 and season 3, but they haven't found anything as compelling as Jim and Pam in the years since then, and the jokes have been more over the top as well. I actually think Carrell is right about the character being ready to move on. There's no way they can rejuvenate the show with Michael Scott still being the centerpiece. Completely overhauling it with a new boss might be their only chance.

The new boss only shows up at night. He is very pale. Pam is strangely attracted to him. Meredith and Angela begin showing up to work with ridiculously large scarves around their necks, even though it's summer. Jim is walking to his car one night when he sees three siren-like beautiful women calling to him. He disappears. Dwight, even more of a toady to the boss than usual, begins swallowing flies.

    This is posturing...

    by the_floating_skull_of_robert_loggia

Charlie Sheen does it, every member of the cast of Cheers did it, some of the CSI cast did it (and were surprised to find themselves let go). Carell is doing what baseball players approaching free agency do, and that's driving up his price before they even hit the bargaining table. He's managed to be in several films while making this show so it's not holding his career back any. His contract's up for renewal and he wants to cash in big. Let it slip that next season's his last, let the fans fill the forums with angst about how the show simply can't go on without him, and wait for NBC to back up to his house with a truck full of cash. Carell will ask for Charlie Sheen money, and, seeing as The Office is the tentpole of Thursday nights (and one of the net's few hits) they'll give it to him. Posturing, I say!

or Sammy leaving CHEERS...just impossible to imagine. THE OFFICE should've ended this year w/the marriage of Pam & Jim...it's run it's course. But, no, NBC will force it to stay on the air well past it's freshness date. MEMO to NBC pinheads: It didn't work w/E.R. and it 'aint gonna work w/THE OFFICE either.

I think it's more self-serving. "I can be in EVEN MORE MOVIES now that I don't have to punch in and punch out at The Office". I don't think this is a negotiating tatic, I buy Carell is done and I also buy that NBC would 100% keep the show going after Carell. This is happening, yo.

Both U.K. & U.S. The Office Are Great

    by dave i

They started out identical, but have evolved differently. I'm glad Steve's leaving. I think he is great, but I think this will lead to more poignant writing, a tighter storyline, and a more definite finale for the character. The reason I think this is good is just because I think they are kind of running out of ideas, it has not been as compelling overall the past few seasons (still funny at times but lost a bit of steam). Sadly, I think this means they are going to milk it totally dry and go out with a fizzle. So this should lead to a better wrap-up for the character while allowing Steve to be in movies and do something different. It's selfish, but I look forward to seeing him in different movie roles as I think he will be great in the right roles. -Cheers

is probably looking for a job. He plays Michael Scott better than Carell at this point. Someone on hitfix suggested Michael Emerson, which I think is a fantastic idea. If they're going to go British, I'd rather see Merchant than Gervias. I've already seen David Brent. I could also go for Garry Shandling, Jeffrey Tambor, or Rhys Darby. I also wouldn't mind seeing a rotation of talent do the gig for a few weeks and then crash and burn.

I never saw Evan Almighty, but I DID think Dan in Real Life was pretty good for the type of movie it was. Not great, but not terrible, and I bought into the character. Some parts were lacking, but still, not a bad movie. Steve Carell was great (just my opinion) in 40-Year Old Virgin and Little Miss Sunshine, obviously he's been great in The Office. However, his performance in Little Miss Sunshine is what has me hopeful. The reason some of his movies don't appeal to me is the premise and from what I can tell of the writing some just do not seem to be that great magical fit. However, in something where he can play a more serious-based role and add some bitter-sweet humor to me he shines. That is both movie-based, AND the episodes of The Office. Alternately, when given well-constructed characters a/o writing to go awkward-funny or kind of a bizarre/quirky character (e.g. The Office when he is just socially inept, 40-Year Old Virgin, Anchorman), I really buy those performances. I am really looking forward to his acting career, and given certain types of roles I think he will be an absolute phenom. So best of luck to him, I believe he will be great. -Cheers

I wish the would just end the show. I am a a fan and I watch it, but last season jumped the shark. I mean Daryl being moved up to the office, the whole creepy guy from the new company, basically making Toby obsolete. Just end the show after this season. You know what they'll do. They'll get rid of Michael and bring in someone new who will basically play second fiddle to Jim and Dwight. I like the show, but it's slowly going downhill. And B.J. Novak sucks ass. I've seen him as a comic and he blows dog. The character of Ryan has done nothing since he was arrested. That should've been the last of him on the show.

They're going to make shows that will automatically be sold into syndication, and will likely make good ad money on first run and some extra in secondary markets. They're pretty much profitable before they make them. Artistically it might turn out crap, but I don't see how making tons of cash is stupid. When you add in the fact that there is an outside chance you could actually reinvigorate the show with the change, you have very little to lose and lots to gain.

This show was magic in its second and third seasons, but I still enjoyed it even as it settled into more of a coast during the last few seasons. Then at some point last year I kind of felt like it was time to wrap things up; either really shake it up or bring things to a close, because the characters no longer have any trajectory. I don't see this as a ploy, I see it as Carrell honestly thinking it's time to creatively move on. I think the rest should consider it too, but like, wrap it up classy, because it's still a good show.

We should all know how this ends. When the main character, (even in an ensemble cast), leaves the show...well...that show is headed for disaster. Think about it, Carrell leaving indicates that he's tired of doing it or just bored with it, meaning most likely the majority of the cast and writers feel the same way. Carrell's just leaving because he's got a solid career to walk out the door for, no one else has that luxury. Ron Howard leaving Happy Days, Topher Grace leaving 70's Show, I could go on all day long and not once did it ever refresh the flagging show that's running on fumes. Just end it with Michael leaving, it's the only way to end it with integrity.

    Time to end this show

The last season was shit compared to previous seasons. End it now before another season of slurry spoils what has been a really good show. Also, when is Archer returning for another series? Fucking love that show.

    Show is still great

and I enjoy the majority of episodes they produce (even if Seasons 2-3 are still the golden era), but as much as I love the entire cast, I really just don't see this working without Carell. When they brought in the new manager for a few episodes back in Season 5, the show sucked. It needs Carell - esp. now that the writing is only "good" and not "excellent" like it used to be.
