What a bizzare day I've had.

    by the reluctant austinite

It started with a call from Harry on steroids, and some news that blew my mind for which I'm sworn to secrecy, and it ends with this insanely awesome video. In between I visited a pirates display at a local museum, attended my first Renaissance Fair (think "Role Models")where I was serenaded by a girl of Elvira sized boobs and then attended one of those "Hell House" types of things called "The 99" which is a live theater "Faces of Death" that drags you to Hell before trying to save you with Jesus. This must go down on record as one the strangest days I've had in recent memory. I need some of Harry's steroids to get me through another day like this, although I might believe this whole day was some type of weird hallucination from some bad honey toast I had for breakfast.

From the looks of it, it was probably a combination, depending on the shot, of puppetry with wire removal and a bit of stop motion here and there. But man, you are right, when it's running ...the "how the FUUUU" part of my brain starts lighting up like the fourth of July. Beautiful work, huh?

Maybe it was a form of rotoscoping?

    by feralangel

I still can't help figuring out how he made the AT-AT run so naturally. My guess is that he filmed a dog running, used the film as a template, and then rotoscoped the movement by overlaying a CG model of an AT-AT...oh hell I don't know. But that's the best guess I can make. I've seen CGI in big-budget movies that didn't look nearly as convincing as that AT-AT. Damn, it still blows me away.

So impressive, but I'm convinced it's really good puppetry with wires, removed later. You can almost see a bit of possible distortion above him against the chain link fence if you watch a few times. I'm also watching his other stuff and he does do a lot of mixed work. Puppetry mixed with stop motion. And GREAT stop motion. Look for the Michael Jackson vs Mr Bean thing and the transformers as well as Boba Fett dancing to a "montage" song. Brilliant!!
