Peter Jackson In Talks To Direct THE HOBBIT!
Beaks here...
No one saw this coming!
The minute Guillermo Del Toro ended his time in Middle Earth, everyone figured it was just a matter of time before Peter Jackson committed to directing THE HOBBIT. According to Heat Vision, that day appears to be drawing near.
This always made sense. After all, they've already spent a good chunk of cash on preproduction; Jackson's got to get that money back somehow. And if they're ever going to interest some deep-pocketed angel of an investor to rescue MGM and get this fucker made, then they'll need the man who brought Middle Earth to the big screen back in the director's chair.
But until MGM's debt situation is squared away (all $4 billion of it), THE HOBBIT will not happen. Anne Thompson reports that Warner Bros. made a $1.5 billion offer to buy the company, but that just wasn't good enough for the MGM's investors. It's a mess - and I don't know if Peter Jackson agreeing to direct the two-part film will get it cleared up anytime soon.

He's the only man for the Job. Shame about del toro, but Jackson's the man!
-
I was fine with Del Toro but this is the way it should be.
-
Isn't it odd that posters always find their news from other posters and not the news site they visit?
-
It certainly completes the circle and we know the style will be consistant across all the films.
-
that visit these talkbacks if he gets the gig.
-
And even then, I'll still think it's bullshit. Not that I'm bothered, I'm not even a fan of Lord Of The Rings.
-
The rights to The Hobbit? Or to buy up MGM? Or just being neighborly and donating the money?
-
then how did everyone figured it was just a matter of time. Can't wait for this though. Should be epic.
-
I can't wait to see all the artwork that John Howe and Alan Lee have cooked up for this film. Those guys are Gods.
-
MGM might prevent The Hobbit from ever getting made!?!?!!? Where's a Howard Hughes type when you need him?... "Who cares? It's only money, just spend it?"
I think Lucas and Spielberg should use their clout and riches, to fix the MGM situation so "The Hobbit" can move forward. They owe us for the KotCS. -
Hopefully Del Toro gets to finally make one of his passion projects now!
-
the only answer that makes any sense
-
It's the way I'd most like to see The Hobbit film(s) get done. But four billion dollars... well... I hadn't heard that figure before. For the first time my gut is telling me it's possible that this film isn't going to happen.
-
Oh well.
-
...and does it, not grudgingly but gladly. It isn't a matter of "competing with himself", it's a matter of redeeming himself for some of the weaker choices they made with the LOTR films (making the entmoot pointless, for example)
-
Of course, I still don't think a Hobbit will ever be made.
-

MGM's gotta get their casino revenue up too...
by shut the fuck up donny
So maybe they'll make Peter do a film involving Bilbo and the Dwarves in Las Vegas. While the dwarves flee an army of Mexicans flinging porno pamphlets at them, Bilbo gets lost and ends up finding a golden ring in a pawn shop!
Hehe, this is fun! -
Ever since he got his shit together physically, he's forgotten how to make a decent movie. Get back on that Hobbit Diet Plan, Jackson!
-

Like the LOTR films or not, this is the only real option because
by bostrike1
Everything about the existing LoTR movies was created to bring Peter Jackson's version of Tolkiens stories to life. Since the films are being done in NZ again, with Weta at the helm, it will still necessarily be Peter Jacksons take on Tolkien in terms of look and feel. Other directors might be nimble enough to make Peters vision work for them, but he is the only perfect fit. Maybe you like the existing films and maybe you don't, but as long as they're using the same design/production team, no one else would make a better "Hobbit" than the father of this particular approach.
-
Wow! I am not sure how THAT happens. Also, not sure how that will ultimately effect The Hobbit. I mean, on the one hand it sounds like a huge bluff blowing off WB's offer and hoping they can turn enough of a profit to stay in business. With that kind of debt, they seem pretty desperate. On the other hand, with as successful as The Lord of the Rings Trilogy was, and with Peter Jackson apparently all but back in the director's chair, there just has to be too much money that would be made for this movie to NOT be made sometime by somebody. When and under what circumstances, who knows. But still, this does seem like a cash cow for SOMEBODY so it is bound to happen at some point. Just for fun, exactly how do you get $4 BILLION American dollars in debt? I know they are dealing with bigger money than I'll ever dream of, but still! -Cheers
-
Kirk Kerkorian used to be part owner of the studio and used the name for the MGM-Mirage Casino business. They have nothing to do with each other now.
-
He started to lose it around the time of ROTK, he completely lost it with KK and Lovely Bones. I fear for these films. Then again, as long as he pulls the old crew together - Howard Shore, Andrew whatshisname as the dp, the same set designers and creature effects crew, it might not be a complete disaster.
-
Don't let him anywhere near this franchise! He will ruin what is a perfect series! I think we all know that the only person who should direct this movie is the man who made the other three, George Lucas.
-
When that happens all of its assets will be sold at auction like what happened to Carolco. The only thing keeping them afloat are their infrequent home video releases and the notion that someone could buy them. That illusion should shatter pretty soon and that house of cards will crash to the ground.
-
No really, who didn't see this coming YEARS AGO?
-
Daniel Craig's best years as Bond!
-
and a percentage of the profits from the Hobbit and the the next Bond pic. They really aren't going to get much more than that, and unless they all spent over $60 bucks a share or something, 2 bil would still likely give each investor a profit. (of course smaller than the 4 bil that they are owed, but what can they do?)
-
That's the only way we'll get another one.
-
I was really hoping for a GDT Hobbit, PJ would be great too but he has other things we wants to do - I would rather he did those cos it heart doesnt seem to be in Middle Earth anymore
-
Waiting for this debacle to pan out, or waiting for Brett Favre to decide whether or not he wants to continue playing football?
-
If only someone had the foresight and fortitude to court Gibson for a big fantasy epic, I guarantee the gauntlet would most definitely be thrown and we'd all stand in awe as we reveled in its majestic glory.
-
He even looks like a young Ian Holm.
-
But I still would have loved to have seen Guillermo Del Toro direct The Hobbit. Like a past article stated, his imprint is already in Middle Earth but it still would have been pretty awesome. Hell, it would have even have been great to see Sam Raimi's take had he gotten the the job. Oh well.
-
could put them further into debt, judging by his recent efforts!
-
I guess all you pathetic, got no life HobbitHeads - you know who you are; you're like those equally pathetic Star Trek morons who go on and on (and ON) about how the New Star Trek broke their beloved "canon", can now rest easy...
I personally would have LOVED to have seen all you bitches reaction if the rumor of Brett Ratner had come to pass...Pathetic losers in Hobbit robes jumping off bell towers and the whinefest here would have been PRICELESS....
I still don't expect greatness from Hobbit....Jackson's heart just isn't in it...he's "obligated", but doesn't "want" to do it.... -
Without his meal ticket Tolkien films, his aura was dying quickly. No one was blown away by Kong and The Lovely Bones just blew. He had to direct this to save his career! As for Del Toro, go make another Hellboy movie, the second one was great!!!
-
PJ was always going to be taking over the film, even before del toro's departure was announced, peter wanted the job and we encouraged him to take it
-
Yes, Jackson wants the Hobbit to be two films, which would please those fucks at One Ring, but ruin whatever chance the Hobbit could have been as one epic film and extended blu-ray.
-
He did originally state that he chose not to direct The Hobbit because he didn't want to compete with his previous series so you could be right. Hopefully he can bring some of that passion from LOTR, if he's given enough time, as well as doing something different with The Hobbit. The latter is a longshot though because now The Hobbit may end up having the same tone as the trilogy now that he's probably going direct it.
-
Seriously. If this MGM crap isn't squared away soon, the last time we see Daniel Craig as 007 could be for the Wii remake of the "GoldenEye" video-game. Please tell me how that even makes sense.
-
If alot of us in hollywood each danated a million or so bucks and the fans each donated 50 to a hundred, we could rase 4 billion in no time, LOLZ could you imagine
-
Whom do you serve?
-
Halve (?) production costs and time, will make $1B at the box office (or more) and excellent blu-ray and DVD sales. Good result for MGM to keep them going until they collapse from debt a year or two afterwards. In the mean-time get a couple of Bonds going.
-

Something tells me studio heads still made mad millions
by the reluctant austinite
while the company went $4 billion into the red. The big wigs never take a cut. Why should they? They're the only reason the company exists and the massive payday is the only reason they're doing the job. All those little people that actually make the movies are going to be the ones looking for a job and most of the people making movies don't own yachts and homes in several countries and/or give their kids $300,000 cars.
-
Stand out on your own, PJ, don't do it cuz the man wants you too.

THEY'RE TAKING THE HOBBITS TO ISENGUARD!

Craig's tenure as the best Bond ever is on hold, than this money-grub of a two-film deal. I loved LotR at the time, find them dead boring to watch now, and can't really stomach the idea of THE HOBBIT being padded out by Peter Jackson with the same senseless largess that made LOVELY BONES inconceivably bad. Like, offensively, ugly-bad. I do have a weird love for KING KONG, mostly because Naomi Watts is insanely good in it, but you could cut an hour out of that film and it would be indisputably better. But yeah. I miss the hungry, visionary Jackson of HEAVENLY CREATURES and DEAD ALIVE. I think in a way the success of LotR ruined him.
-
'The Hobbit starring Vin Diesal as Bilbo'. Yeah, now we're talking.
-
could rock the shit in those caves with his "shined" eyes and animal instincts
-
...he would be perfect and it really does feel like it's that bloke's time to rule. C'mon Peter - get this show on the road! C'mon Gates - buy MGM and clear their debts ferfuckssake - it's an American institution.
-
Damn, we truly are the New York Yankees of negativity.
-
Sharlto Copley would make a fine Bilbo.
-
Peter Jackson is directing both films!!!
http://www.joblo.com/index.php?id=32743 -
PJ kept shying away from this, saying he did not want to direct... but now he feels like he has to in order to protect the monetary investment? If his heart is not in directing, can this really be a good thing? I don't want a guy who feels trapped in the director's chair to be doing this, it will show in the film.

Peter Jackson to direct Hobbit With A Shotgun
by inexplicable_nuclear_balls
All credit to Hervoyel for the scoop.
-
Don't tell the elf!
-
Jackson is not the director he was when he made LOTR. He's done a Lucas. He's lost all lightness of touch and sense of proportion leading to overblown, schmaltzy crap like King Kong. He needs to be reigned in if he's to direct this, told when he's going wrong.
-
Oh yeah, Vin Diesel is totally non-gay.
-
Hey Beaks, did you catch the story about MGM and Lionsgate in talks about a merger? The only thing is Lionsgate aren't sure whether or not it would make sense for their investors. How did a once powerhouse studio get so fucked up!! I'd love to see these movies get made LOTR and The Hobbit are my all fave time books/movies but I don't wanna be senile, deaf & blind by the time they get made!!!
-
Ian
McKellen
Mortality
They can't make The Hobbit without Gandalf! -
Aren't three hours enough to tell that fucking story, already? Do we really need six?
-
Guiermo said that he was going to try to not rely solely on CGI for his creatures - after veiwing PAN'S L I was excited about this approach - afraid that Jackson will rely on computer too much -
-
'You calling VIN DIESEL GAY?'
-
If you just make them two hours long, each. If they're going to be three and a half hours (four and a half on the blue ray special editions) then just do one, and drop the middle earth background crap
-
"Jett has been helping Peter find a director and we are close to signing a very exciting choice" - yes, the 'exciting choice' was Peter himself! Shaazam!!! We do like to tease you fellas sometimes. Also, Jett is writing a THIRD film in The Hobbit trilogy, the fabled bridge movie between the Hobbit and LOTR, and which Viggo and some of the rest of the original cast will be asked to return for. It will be called LOTR: Origins, and is being kept a relative secret until closer to production (except for dropping the exclusive to our good friends here at AICN, of course). Additionally, if the Hobbit movies are a success, the plan is to follow them up with a multi-part adaptation of The Silmarillion for TV, like a miniseries, which PJ also wants to do for Temeraire (the one about the Napoleonic Wars and dragons). Jett is helping Peter set up a production wing for big budget TV miniseries and is calling it "Jettset Productions" (although the general public will not be in on the pun implicit in the name, of course!).Final piece of PJ news - he plans to make Bad Taste 2 between Tin Tin 2 and The Hobbit, as a lower budget production to blow off some steam between the larger ones. Jett has written the first draft and is calling it "Badder Taste". It will be the most gory and disgusting movie ever made, even topping Dead Alive/Braindead. Jett is currently visiting NZ slaughterhouses to stock up on piles of offal for the production!
-
No really I'm shocked I tell ya shocked.
-
What happens to all the pre-production stuff that's already been done? Surely they wouldn't scrap all of GDT's ideas/designs/creations and what not. Last I heard GDT was ready to start shooting just as soon the studio said "go". If PJ does direct this why would he start from scratch if money is such a huge issue (and we know it is). Seems like it would defeat the purpose altogether.
-
clearly he and Jackson had a great working relationship putting this stuff together. Glad to hear Jackson might direct though.
-
that it's going to be wrapped up in a matter of hours...
-
Seriously?
-
I don't give two shits about the Hobbit I want more Bond!
-
"...everyone figured it was just a matter of time." ? wtf kind of writing is that?

I've never heard of a hobbit. Sounds like orc mischief to me.
-
Jackson lost his magic after Fellowship....and every movie since has been a noteable drop in quality.
-
Personally I was looking forward to Blomkamp's version, I'm disappointed.
-
God those Ring movies got woefully boring, so now nothing Middle Earth can be done without this ass clown? More of this played out crap? Goody gumdrops, maybe we could get Mel and Danny together for a new Lethal Weapon while were at it, you know, only if Pesci is in it 'cause it just wouldn't have the same magic *blorch!*
-
From what I've read, it's basically the accumulation of multiple debts that were taken out by the studio for both the acquisition of back catalog titles (from places like Orion, etc) and expansion of operations over the past couple decades. They've basically been in debt for 20+ years, hit some hard times in the 90's so far as hit films go and have seen their usually reliable half-billion-a-year revenue from back catalog titles weaken due to the economic recession.
-
if Jackson is even a little interested in directing this then give him what he wants and let him do it
-
So PJ and the gang can get this thing rolling. And while they're at it, throw in a cool 150 mil for Neill Blomkamp to do Halo.
-
Guess he was wrong!
-
Now this site has two insiders and they know each other!
-
After the commercial soufle-pop of The Lovely Bones and the middling reaction to King Kong (which I thought was great but didn't exactly set the world alight) it always surprised me that Jackson didn't take The Hobbit from the off. Bottom line is, he gets this world better than anyone alive. I dare say Tolkien himself couldn't have visually (read - VISUALLY) expressed himself to the degree jackson has - he understands the tones, the vibe, the mixture between twee and terrifying better than anyone else.
So to hear that he's overseeing his own hard work makes sense. But the MGM thing? That's a hurdle, I don't think Smaug has enough gold to sort that one out. -
Jun 26, 2010 6:43:18 AM CDT
I'm not getting excited about this until I see a trailer.
by knuckleduster
Until then, consider me bored as far as The Hobbit is concerned.
-
SHows what the greed and stupidity that is that thing called Hollywood can create for itself. I hope they get bought out and broken up. Universal or Warner would like do a better job with Bond and LOTR.
-
more tickle fights and faggoty midgets is not what I want to see. Thanks but no thanks PJ, go fuck yourself and let a real director do this movie.

I just hope Jackson has gotten that senseles use of slow-mo that plagued parts of King kong out of his system.
-
and there will be another very capable director filling his shoes. I just don't see Jackson directing The Hobbit, since he did an awesome job on LOTR. I think PJ will nurture it till the financial mess is over and then a Neill Blomkamp or another talented young director will step in. And the movie will be great.
-
evil bittorrent strikes again!! Damn you bittorrent!!!
-
They should release some concept art.
-
said he is stepping in to direct to protect the studio's investment? I dont know about anyone else, but that does nt sound like the right reason to make a film. Jackson seriously does nt seem interested/passionate about this film, it really seems as if he is just doing it because he has to. Does nt seem like a good sign.....
-
providing the original "Star Wars" trilogy? Did I miss some major news release? I was under the impression that we'd never see those again. Just curious.
-
When they rereleased the DVDs a couple years ago, they included the non-Special Edition versions as a "bonus feature"- though it's non-anamorphic and essentially a laserdisc transfer.

I had no idea - it was such a big deal for so long. Guess I really am out of it.

Pan's Labyrinth is a modern classic but all of his other movies (Ok, I liked Devil's Spine or whatever it was called and the Golden Scarab vampire movie was interesting) but most of Del Toro's movies are near misses for me. Jackson on the other hand, KILLED IT one the LOTR trilogy. I want Tolkien cinematic consistency. Gimme Jackson!
-
and Jackson bails after this MGM fiasco is cleared up. At this point the only viable option would be if Jackson were only gonna produce, then maybe Blomkamp for director? I personally don't feel anyone else could pull it off. If they get a top tier director: Spielberg, Nolan, Ridley Scott, then those guys will have to put their "signature style" on it, and it won't be consistent with the LOTR trilogy.
-

Jackson can't bail if he agrees to direct
by bp_drills_america_a_new_asshole
Investors aren't stupid. They didn't get rich by being stupid. If jackson agrees to direct to get the Hobbit made, they'll be all kind of binding ties to make sure he honors that. If Jackson turns around after and says "Actually guys, I've changed my mind, I'm only gonna produce" all kinds of financial and legal pain is going to rain down on his ass. If Jackson agrees to direct there's no way he can squirm out of it.
-
starring Harry Balls, Cunt, Mr.Cheaks, Porkules, and Capooned.
-
Make him a Hobbit, not a gay.
-
They are just like that. It's not like they even know about stuff like that. They just eat. Or do you really want Vin Diesil... Mixed messages anyone?
-
Del Toro would have made a terrific Hobbit. Jackson's Lord of the Rings was drawn out, melodramatic and just boring.
-
I agree. I never wanted to see creatures in Middle-earth with eyeballs in all the wrong places.
-
That is what they get for firing Brosnan after only 4 Bonds. Craig can always play Putin in a future biopic.
-
Jackson did what no one thought could be done: bring the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy to a mass audience and have a huge commercial success with it. Doing "The Hobbit" would be redundant, and a potential disaster. Not only could the film (or films) be a mess, but they could very well tarnish the legacy of the first trilogy (as Lucas did with the Star Wars prequels). Leave it alone!!

I want Michael Jackson to direct the Hobbit
by mjs_cold_dead_pale_corpse
lot's of molestation and Jesus Juice too
-
Sarcasm FYI. Some people just don't get it and ruin it for the smart, cool, funny people.
-
You know, like greenlighting a 100% sure thing?
I am not a fan of te ideas Jackson has for the Hobbit, but jesus farking christ on a oyster cracker, how can the MGM people not see that when you do a prequel to a franchise that has earned something like $2.5 Billion dollars, you're going to make a few bucks??? -
No matter what was said or what was done pre-production wise, Peter Jackson was always going to direct this project! It's for the best, no one else can make these films like him...
-
Your leverage everything you have on risky ventures that don't pan out...that's what ya do. Kinda like the Federal Government and their various Bullshit Ponzi schemes. But unlike the Feds who simply print more money...MGM needs nothing short of a miracle...as since whatever sucker buys them also assumes their full $4B debt unless they negotiate with the creditors. And sure they'll make a few bucks off the Hobbit...but not $4Billion worth.
-
otherwise Scriptgirl will be out of work and back on Youtube shilling her tits.
-
Dave, you asked: "Just for fun, exactly how do you get $4 BILLION American dollars in debt? I know they are dealing with bigger money than I'll ever dream of, but still!"Hey, MGM is an insignificant drop in the bucket compared to the United States government, which now has over $100 TRILLION -- yes, that's trillion with a "T" -- in unfunded liabilities on its books. In other words, money the government has promised to pay out, but obviously doesn't have and will ultimately massively default on.And how do you get there? SHEER STUPIDITY and companies, as well as governments, being staffed by people who CAN'T do basic math and who CAN'T FUCKING ADD a simple column of numbers!
-
And why can't Sony just buy the bond franchise? The last dozen or so Bond films have been at best average. That price should be cheap.
-
Blest, you said: "WB should offer the stockholders 2 billion and a percentage of the profits from the Hobbit and the the next Bond pic."The only problem with that plan is that you're talking billion with a "B". That's a fucking HUGE sum of money, even by Hollywood standards. And Warners isn't interested in saving MGM out of the goodness of their hearts. They're only interested in acquiring the company (and film catalogue) to make money. So, the big problem with your plan is that, from Warner's perspective, they'd want to keep ALL the profits from any HOBBIT or BOND films, simply because that really would be their best chance at getting their $2 billion investment back. I mean, realistically speaking, those are the 2 core franchises worth acquiring for their money-making possibilities. What else does MGM really have that's worth spending SEVERAL BILLION dollars on?
-
No Hobbits hanging by a finger from a ledge ... no Hobbits shooting bugs off other Hobbits with machine guns, hitting all the bugs but not hitting any of the Hobbits ... no Hobbits involved in Flintstones-esque Brontosaurus races ... no more Orcs being gutted from behind just after they deliver a "I'm gonna put a helgramite hole in your belly" line and just before they deliver their blow ... no more crap.
Here, PJ. Take this quarter, go downtown and pay some guy to have a rat gnaw that Lucasitis out of your psyche. Make a movie worthy of "Fellowship" again. And a few bitch slaps to those know-it-all writing partners of yours won't hurt either.
Don't rape my adulthood. -
... the "hilarious" fart jokes he inserts for Smaug.
From Del Toro to Jackson will be a serious letdown. -

Peter Jackson will end up owning a sizable chunk of the returns and merchandise if he goes with this.
-
because it seems like he really didn't want to have to direct this, but all of the legal studio crap looks like it's really forcing him into a corner. Plus it's such a shame that there are so few directors working in the industry whom people would feel comfortable with handling this project. Now I mean no disrespect, I'm a huge fan, but when you think about Peter Jackson's earlier work, who would have thought him to deliver something as incredible as the Lord Of The Rings Trilogy? With the exception of Frighteners and Heavenly Creatures, which are great films, his other work was beautiful schlock. But, people had faith in him, New Line had faith in him, and let him make the films. So what I'm saying is, maybe people should be a little more open minded about this, maybe Peter Jackson could be more open minded about this, instead of being pressured into doing something that he does not want to.
-
Man, you guys are pathetic.
-
What would Art Buchawald do? A just and fair solution would be to go into the bank account of every overpaid suit and must-hire nephew who's ever made more than a million while working for WB and take that money away to pay their legitimate creditors, and then strip them of their rights to the Hobbit as a penalty for being such jerks, and when those who feel they've been wronged complain, tell they to go find a real freakin' job, and welcome to life outside of hollywood.
-
Movies never make any profit on paper, so how could they ever get out of debt?
-
Or we'll see him on some CBS comedy TV series.
-
Too many filmmakers lament that they spend lots of time with this backstage powerplays and not enough to really be creative and concentrate on what really matters, making movies.Of cours,e powerplays are useful for other filmmaker,s specially those without filmmaking talent, like Michael Bayass and Jar Jar Abrams. Those, they thrive on backstage politics and powerplays, it's how they go ahead on business. Not by making movies, not with creativity, but by self-presentation. And frankly, i now consider Peter Jackson to be one of those. And i used to admite the man quite a lot.
-
Peter "George Lucas" Jackson's last two movies -- KING LONG and THE LOVELY BOMBS -- were both unmitigated failures. If he doesn't return to his cash-cow, what the hell else is he gonna do? Make another movie either a) nobody sees, or b) people see and hate? At least with the Hobbit he'll have a sizable cult of obese virgins who will pay to see ANYTHING Tolkien related and will LOVE every last second of it's unending running time and borderline self-parodical gravitas; you know, in lieu of forming relationships with members of the opposite sex.
-
I love that!!!
-
There you go, he's got work now. Happy?

brilliant PJ like the beautiful scene when Theoden wakes and finds his son dead and how he speaks of the white flowers that grow on his forebear's graves......and less Elves surfing on shields and dwarf tossing...I still wish Alfonso Curron would do not only the Hobbit and also the Deathly Hallows HP flicks, too...vision AND subtlety...brilliant.
