Helen Mirren continues to unleash Hell, this time with machine guns in RED from DC Comics!
Hey folks, Harry here... so, do you think the older actors in action scenarios was kicked off more from Pixar's UP success... or Eastwood's GRAND TORINO? This seems to be the WANTED version of the calcium deposit set. I'm 100% unfamiliar with RED as a comic, though - I think I might be due to a visit to the local comic shop today... after all, it'll be empty since all the geeks and nerds will be streaming about APPLE STORES all day. Helen Mirren has always been a badass - going back to stuff like AGE OF CONSENT with James Mason - and all the way to today, but it really does seem that she's getting more mileage out of her Oscar than many of the recent winners. Her acceptance speech was just so damn charming, sensual and with a perfect amount of just 'give a fuck' badassness that I think those fools that maybe didn't think of her before - are bringing her truly awesome roles. I'm dying to see her work in Taymor's TEMPEST later this year too. BUT - there's more to this than that. The headliner is Bruce Willis, along with Mary-Louise Parker, Morgan Freeman and that plastic surgeon that was not really Dr. Doom (at least I don't consider him Victor)... Julian McMahon. This'll be out mid-October this year! Looks awesome: Watch Helen Mirren rattling away with automatic hole-makers!

I read the synopsis of the comic, and thought it sounded boring.

...but this trailer is pretty awesome. Seriously, "ex-CIA operative is targeted by assassination because he knows too much" would be fucking boring on film played straight... it's a tired concept. Hell, it's been done in 3 Bourne films in this decade alone. This trailer found tons of new life in the idea.

A few months ago. I don't care that you don't care but it's weird seeing a movie that was filmed in Cambridge ontario look pretty decent. John Q(the Denzel Washington flick) filmed here as well. Our tourism motto is "Cambridge Ontario Canada we have a mall and John Q was filmed partially here for a couple scenes!" I've always said you haven't lived until you take the John Q tour(our largest draw and the source of our economy). They have a chalk outline of where Denzel actually stood and not to mention the paper plate he used to eat lunch with. I can't wait for the John Q rollercoaster that's being built. Exciting times

Funny humor that isn't funny. <p><p>Random action that isn't exciting. <p><p>Lines of dialog that are tired one liners. <p><p>Sadly, the only thing this movie has going for it seems to be the cast and even they look like they are phoning it in. <p><p>If they had gone the route of the comic, it would have been somewhat of a breath of fresh air for action movies. Warren Ellis' RED, while not a great comic by any means, was a no-nonsense straight forward balls to the wall intense action action story about a badass character - Paul Moses. Moses was the type of character that Clint Eastwood has liked playing these past few years -- the badass old timer you don't want to fuck with who's a hardened veteran in whatever field he works in. And who doesn't love those characters Clint plays? Well, that's exactly what Mr. Moses is in Warren Ellis' comic. Following the comic would have also called for a hard R instead of this PG-13 bollocks. The tone and writing also had more substance than what this standard-ass trailer shows. But instead of getting that breath of fresh air, we get the same tired action-comedy group of badasses formula. After The Losers, The A-Team and The Expendables. How much do you wanna bet RED will get pushed back to Spring 2011 since that's where it belongs (along with Seth Rogen's Green Hornet bullshit)

Doesn't need to be 'Moonlighting' long, but the same completely bald look in every film is distracting - takes me out of the scene and shouts, "YOU'RE WATCHING BRUCE WILLIS, CELEBRITY". At least a little Ed Harris-style buzz. He's a good-looking guy, it's just getting repetitive.

...but I'm not sure I dig the casting. It's only three issues, so I'll have to give it a quick re-read and see what I think. I do remember it being - like a shit ton of Ellis' work - very wide and visual. Could easily be adapted to film. However, like a shit ton of Ellis' work, it's really violent. I'm quite certain there will be changed. Whatever. Hurray for Warren Ellis! May everything he has ever written be adapted to film!... with better casting!

And other than Seraphim Falls, which I haven't seen, I really love all of them (quite a lot, actually). But Unforgiven is a damn near perfect film. The way Clint deconstructs his own bad ass western guy image is untouchable.
