Ernie Cline's READY PLAYER ONE sells to WARNER BROTHERS... Geekiest film ever made to ensue!

Published at: June 18, 2010, 8:54 p.m. CST by headgeek

Hey folks, Harry here and some birdies under the Water Tower told me that ERNEST (Ernie) CLINE's debut novel - which sold to Random House for more money than Ernie knows what to do with - has again sold the rights to WARNER BROTHERS for even more money than he knows what to do with - plus Warner's has hired Ernie to write the first 3 drafts of READY PLAYER ONE. So what does this mean? It means that all the Warner owned characters & references that appear in the novel will easily be available for the movie... but what else? Well, a high profile sell like this might mean that Ernie's long in development scripts for his WOLFMAN JACK Biopic and his awesome THUNDERCADE could see movement in the coming days. But even if that doesn't happen - there's a new awesome geeky dream project to keep an eye out for.

Because people have stopped coming to this site. It is a mess and nobody who works here really gives a shit about their readers. Sad really!

I have been coming here since that Matrix review and have always like this site. One of the first sites I come to everyday. I am far from a troll. However, this site has become a true joke in the last year. It had issues before then, but has become a true embarrassment since. I only come here for the TB's because they are quite entertaining.

    Prison

    by shartron

Why has it become a joke? Can he not root for his friends to succeed? Also, this site uses sponsors to survive. Sometimes these sponsors(films)are pure garbage. That's not AICN's fault. I don't always agree with his or other's opinions but I think it's pretty badass this site has lasted so long. They must be doing something right.

So is it about classic arcade games? If that's the case

    by UltraTron

then they should contact me as a consultant. I do effects for your favorite movies but on the side I build anything imaginable in arcade machine form. I'm making a Lightcycle game I hope to have finished for legacy. Full-on light cycle that you get inside. It's based on the concept that atari made the original game instead of bally. It's color vector with a battlezone feel. It could have existed in 82. Blue grid with colored cycles all vector goodness. It's really time I started directing or at least get more involved with shaping the ideas of some of these projects because I'm un-limited badassness.

That is a bullshit excuse. I work in a pretty demanding job as well that is not nearly as cushy as yours. I have had 3 very important co-workers laid off this year and had to take over their workload as well and I still find plenty of time to get all of my work done. I could accept your "too busy" excuse if we actually saw things getting done on this site, but every story posted here this week was at least 2 days old and either from Joblo or Empire first.

    Where are the reviews?

    by ahdvd

Harry, don't take this as a critique, but more an observation - i regularly check on this site, as it does (usually) have good scoops and updates on the latest movie info, but the site has nowhere near as many regular reviews of new releases as it did a decade ago, i was amazed to see you review both A-Team and Karate Kid this week, but you did mini-reviews and both in one posting, that wasnt essentially a review of these movies, but a comparison of them against their 80's originals and more of a look back - you need to get some more regular reviewers involved, several movies have not had so much as a mention when they were released which is a dissapointment, as some movies that did not perform well seem to have ben ignored by AICN, and had they been mentioned, people might have given them a look, as a lot of people DO read and enjoy AICN.

I haven't permission to write a full on review of Ernie's book - and its release is so far off and the story is so filled with awesome twists and turns to go into a full on description of the glorious madness that Ernie is responsible for... well it should be preserved for personal discovery. HOWEVER, I've a very visual imagination and as I imagined this book - it was just a believable universe in which I could imagine existing. It is one that I see our global culture headed towards - and which was parodied in a manner in WALL*E in a manner of speaking.

I'm hoping STEVE JOBS licenses Ernie concept for the OASIS and makes it real. So will you promote my script?

    by vadakinX

I haven't actually written it yet...I'm lazy, plus Goyer writing Superman has kinda depressed me, but once I get over that and write the script I have in mind (one of many) will you read, review and promote it?
This all assumes the script is any good of course, but if it is I need all the help I can get not living in Hollywood or knowing any Hollywood bigwigs and all.
If the script is shit then I give you permission to rip into it and tear me a new one...once again, assuming I get around to writing it.
In fact...and I'm being completely serious here, maybe AICN could have some form of workshop or something or yearly competition to have scripts or treatments read by Hollywood producers/directors? After all, we talkbackers are always talking about how we could do better than the likes of Orci and Kurtzman and some of us do have aspirations of working in the industry.
It's something I've been thinking about for a while actually. I once spoke to a guy who worked as an intern at Universal and his job was essentially to read scripts being sent in from agencies, summarize them and pass them on. According to him, most of the scripts he got were awful but of course some of them ended up being produced.
It's just a thought really. It could be an interesting way to promote new talent that may not be able to get their foot in the door otherwise, or it could be a complete disaster with everyone writing their version of Transformers (I have an idea for that...but then I have an idea for everything). Either way it's a fun exercise at the very least...or not.
I should go back to sleep shouldn't I.

OK let me step in this one for a second, has it occurred to any of the numerous Fuck-knobs in talkback land that perhaps Harry is a fan of MOVIES, meaning PERIOD, he loves cinema, That is not selling out at all we each have found fun in "bad" movies before, let the man have his time in the sun doing something he loves without pissing in his cornflakes; I have been fortunate enough to have worked and lived near Austin for two years, luckily have been to several of the AICN screening and chatted with about various old movies (most recently STARBLAZERS old cartoon talk) and had a great tiem there at each event. Harry works his ass off to arrange those without monetary compensation, he just loves the work; now I will never consider that 'selling out' he runs the risk of negative bitching if he likes a movie you don't, so cut him some slack Politically Harry and I couldn't be more different if we each were each others MIRROR UNIVERSE evil twins, HOWEVER I too have a love of film and movies, with that fact in common between us I could chat with that dude for weeks straight, now that we all should have in common so lay off with the "sellout bullshit OK, it demeans us all here.

    by HEADGEEK

Ya know... FUCK OFF. Seriously. I fucking love the new NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET. I didn't walk in holding the original up as the only possible take ever. I went in open minded and found a film that I absolutely loved, can't wait to get on Blu Ray and would hope spawns a series. Not quite sure if it did enough for that. Though I think it did.

I literally watched the Original NIGHTMARE two nights before and HONESTLY feel there's things I prefer about the remake, while I still love what the original did to me when I saw it in Junior High on my Great Grandfather's TV at 3am on HBO. I don't go to movies to FIND WHAT IS WRONG, I go to see what they got right, and for me... a diehard Freddy fan - NOTE: FREDDY, not Robert Englund. I also love Robert Englund, but my fave character of his is the nice alien from V. Seriously. LOVE HIS ALIEN!

    Double Again

    by HEADGEEK

I think you'd also be interested to know that at this particular juncture of the month, my wife is buying the groceries cuz I don't get another check for a week. So fuck you with your sellout bullshit. There's times where I'm selling stuff at local shops to make it between pay cycles. OH - I'M SORRY, does that crush your illusion? Producing gigs? There are projects that I'm working on right now, that I've been working on for 7 years without a cent. Spending $1000s on phone bills to keep them going on my side of the fence. I don't sell out, because I have a several thousand acre ranch in North Texas that we continue to pay down the estate taxes on, which will set me up pretty for the rest of my life. I don't NEED Hollywood to eventually "Make it" and I'll be damned if I compromise what I love for some shiny fuck-all. The fact is I've hosted events where the studio behind the film spent over $10k on the event, then bombed the film. I'm the crazy fucker that has a problem with TOY STORY 3 that once I thought about, has driven me crazy trying to write a review that is all about a film I love, that has an aspect that drives me fucking crazy. I'm not worried about offending PIXAR - they know I'm as independent as they come.

I'm not sure why you got under my skin tonight. Maybe it was that I was so fucking happy watching THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE WIERD and you put the right amount of fecal matter into my eyes to make me see red.

I might start serially banning people like you... but I won't. Because criticism is a healthy thing, if it is valid. What you did wasn't criticism, it is technically closer to just being libelous - but given I despise the concept of Imperial Entanglements and other unsightly bullshit - I let it go. But ya know... I've spent 14 years of my life working to provide cool things that make people in the world happy, sets their expectations right, perhaps whisper a bit of coolness that they might never have heard otherwise. And I fucking love it.

I love it so much, that I continue to do it, even though I have an entire other life of work that threatens to finally come to massive fruition in a way I never dreamt, but I'm committed to continue working on AICN.

I owe you guys everything. Despite the nasty personal attacks and shit that the "dark side" of Talkback heaves and throws. You guys do pay the bills, not via subscription fees which I once was so adamant about opposing that the guy that hosted my site at that time, DELETED a YEAR AND A HALF of my writing - without warning and left me and the site homeless for a good 3 weeks before the angels at Jamison Gold stepped up.

So Double - thank you. I needed to fume a bit, perhaps it is the wine. I don't know. Whatever it is, I'm better, smiling and thinking about pussy again. So night.

Harry, don't let em get too you man

    by TheJudger

God knows I use this place as an outlet, and most of my posts are very negative, nasty and badly typed. I love it though when a bit of good news comes in that just send it all up and kills my grinch heart.
I do however feel like film, the "business" has made a giant misstep recently and it hasn't tried to correct itself. I don't know what it is, (it's more than remakes) and I know it's not me and my simple opinion. Everyone can feel the wrongness of modern cinema, we just cant come up with a name/terminology to suit it. We feel it like Neo felt the matrix, and no one good film or several can fix it. Those days where it had the Glow are over. I used to love horror. I mean it's all I thought about from like age 12 on. But now I don't see anything there that is progress or worthy of what it used to be. Sure maybe we get a good film every now and then, but one is nothing to write home about. I'm not trying to hide a judgement on the nightmare remake in this statement. Dude you love what you love, and who cares what anyone else thinks. Life comes in were are not Supermen, it really is in control of us, not us of it, and sometimes it really hurts. I'm rambling. I need this place. It's the only subject left in the world of creative entertainment that still means something to me (I gave up on modern music ages ago)
Even if I'm more than 75% mad with most of it as it chooses to be today. I still believe in cinema.

Have to back up Harry on this one.

    by MariusXe

The Nightmare remake was pretty good and I liked it very much. He doesn't have to "sell out" to have that opinion about the movie.

  • June 20, 2010, 7:17 a.m. CST

    harry, you are all right

    by Potatino

Umm you are allowed to have an opinion I don't agree with and I kinda of like your positivy. I think a lot of how movies make you feel has to do with the mood you are in before you see the movie itself. Different people go into different movies in a different mood than other people do and get a different emotional result afterwards if that makes sense. Thats ok. Movie reviewing is subjective. I think anyway. I reckon you've always been honest. Maybe you've been happy when I was in a bad and that annoyed me but other than that everything was fine. I'll forgive you for that. Lame attempt at humour aside I'm really looking forward to the comicon movie. Keep doing what you do Harry.

Thats what I'm talking about man. These douche-bag trolls needed to be told what the fuck is going on. On subject, I'm stoked for this to come to fruition, and am looking forward to it. Awesomesauce Harry, Pure Awesomesauce.

You know what I used to like about AICN?

    by D.Vader

How they were on top of every story. You know what I despise about AICN nowadays? How almost every story comes in 1-2, even 3 days later than when its reported elsewhere.
I wish Harry, or some of his other employees, cared enough to give us the news as it comes in, not days later when they finally read it.
There's some constructive criticism for you. Been coming here for 14 years. Nowadays I get more and more disappointed with the place. Wish it was run by people who appeared to care more.

2 days late? try a week and a half

    by Potatino

I remember the when Hurt Locker Bittorrent case was reported here around a week and a half after I read it on Boingboing (which linked an article from variety). I would have thought at least one reporter here would be interested enough in movie news to be reading variety. So I kind of agree that sometimes it seems like the reporters here don't care enough to give us news as it happens. Just my opinion. I might be wrong.

NO really, Let us try and get you down Harry

    by EddieMurphysLaugh

Because you really do deserve it..between your "pay for good reviews", ads plastered all over your site for a film you claim to just give a good review too and your sell out hypocritisim and 5th grade writing style, you've completely not only lost sight of what people used to love about you, you also just don't give a fuck. "Hey Robert Rodriguez just dropped by...".."Hey so Sylvester Stallone just called"...seriously..fuck off..You deserve every point of criticisim you get...and yeah..if you put the fucking farmville and twitter away..you'd actually have time for this website...Instead you let Merrick do most of the writing and he can't even get the fucking movies he's posting about right half the time.

    by HEADGEEK

Oh, I absolutely agree the news doesn't hit AICN as fast as in the days when I was keeping 36 hour days. I've tried to get Quint, Beaks, Merrick, Herc & I all on a rotation, but for whatever reason - it still doesn't get done properly.

Part of the problem is, frankly, people like you D.Vader. In the "Grand Old Days" of AICN - the readers - the second something broke, would drop an email in the Harry@AintitCool.Com account - notifying us the second something broke. NOW - a few dozen asshole types continually feed our Email account with spam --- making it nearly impossible to see scoops when they come in. BUT - as I said in my post - Talkbackers while representing about 35% of this site's readership - seem far more interested in posting news in Talkbacks - where it goes unseen, instead of sending that news to THE SITE.

I'll call another AICN board meeting and try to get the other writers kicking ass hot and heavy... but that tends to work for 2-3 week runs and that's it.

    You know...

    by Red Ned Lynch

...I've been reading this site from almost the beginning and I think I've been Red Ned Lynch here and posting on and off for more than a decade.
And the reason I still come here after all this time (there's not a single other entertainment site I visited back then that I still do now) isn't because of the speed these guys break news or their choice of what to cover or even the quality of their reviews.
It's the sense of community. I can come to this site and post some stupid William Girdler reference, follow it up with a paean of love to the films of Barbara Steele and cap it off with a discussion of why the flora and fauna of the earth at the time of Lucy would have made the death of the Battlestar Galactica refugees a certainty...
...and everyone will get it. And someone will be sure to argue. And I'll be home.
I'm lucky enough to have a lot of that in my real life, but on-line...anyway, that's what this site provides.
Thanks Harry. Don't think I've ever thought to say that in all the time I've been enjoying your hospitality.

...use his life of privilege to get punctuation marks? Because last time I checked they were free.
Couple factual points. This website you're posting your incomprehensible gibbereeze on? He made it. Right there he gave back more to the movies he loves than most people.
And nobody would want to know him if not for his knowledge of movies? Yeah, you know, if that Oppenheimer jerk hadn't known about physics people wouldn't have gone near him.
You've got a real winning combination of bile, illiteracy and self pity going here. Which of these traits, exactly, attract people to you.
And Harry, just in case you read this, I may be defending you but your Nightmare on Elm Street review? You should write a personal letter of apology to every great horror director of the 70s. Plus Wes Craven.
Yeah, it was a bank shot.

well. Gosh aren't you a happy soul. Fruits of labors. Well, in the past two months after a better part of a decade's work, serious film steps have been taken. Fingers crossed, but it is very likely than in the next 2 weeks, financing for 3 of the films I've been working on will be complete. The documentary I'm doing on COMIC CON is moving forward constantly. And the 5th film will begin moving forward after my partner on that film is finished with some work they're doing after August.

Why has GHOST TOWN & JOHN CARTER not been made? They're both incredibly large projects that require studio support. In both cases, the companies that developed and were thrilled about those projects - had corporate shifts and changes of fates. On GHOST TOWN - many years of work by myself and Paul Dini have resulted in a screenplay that is beloved by both of us, several directors that have read it - and will be made after this slate of 5 films I'm producing. And John Carter - after working with 4 different amazing directors, the studio spending over 9 million, one particular nightmare exec that couldn't tell the difference between John Carter and Star Trek & Transformers - killed the project (then she was fired 2 weeks later), but the good news is a film adapted from that work will be out next year via Disney. While none of our work will be used, Disney did hire much of our artistic team - so perhaps something resembling that brilliant project will get on screen in the near future.

The film business is not easy. Things are not HANDED to you. The sheer enormity of reading, writing notes, working with talent, pushing that talent to discover the best in itself, nurturing it and then finally convincing MONEY PEOPLE who do not think at all like the CREATIVES to understand what it is they're looking at. Well, it isn't easy. You're asking statisticians to understand material that ordinarily they would have no interest in. You have to attract various actors and actresses to attach themselves. All while trying to also wrangle large sums of money - and there are hundreds of starts and stops - celebrations and defeats.

I absolutely do not wish to be John Belushi - as a young boy, I probably did. And growing up I often wanted to be a fat character actor like Sydney Greenstreet or Belushi or Laughton. Once I had my back injuries, I headed in another direction.

I own 1 house in Austin. But I pay two mortgages and RENT for the house that I am in. I work fairly tirelessly to get to the position of being able to pay for the house that my wife and I would like to build on some land adjoining the House I do own. It is our dream. We have the plans drawn up (more meetings), we've talked to vendors and construction folks. We know what'll take and how to get there. And yes, we have a plan that doesn't require the miracle of a movie project being made, which frankly - you can never count on.

SO why be distracted by a medium that has thousands of disappointments in the promise of an eventual sunrise? Because I love it. Because each project is something I haven't seen on screen. I'm not developing a ton of remakes. They're all, save one, original unadapted materials. Something that I see readers on my site begging for more of. Something that I find myself dying to see more of. And I'm doing it because I do have a strange crazy ability to attract people to the notion of working together on a shared dream.

btw - my choice of beard was not grown out of a love of WITNESS, but of DARBY O'GILL & THE LITTLE PEOPLE.

And I'm not so typical as you think. Yes, there is an inheritance. NO - it has not even gotten out of probate yet, so I have not profited from it as of yet. The land, the oil, the crops and the animals exist now to pay the estate taxes that are required to be paid off before receipt can move on to the heirs. SO - I don't yet have that. NOR do I wish to have my house built from that land, but through my own work. I want a house that I live in to be something that I look at and realize that I made through the profits of my own tasks.

Collectibles. Yes, I grew up in an incredibly idyllic situation. My parents were amongst the earliest dealers of Pop Culture memorabilia on the planet. Two years before there was an Overstreet Price Guide. THEY sold/traded/borrowed and worked to create a lifestyle that was outside of the dreary work that so many find themselves trapped in. The wanted to be happy - and it was a struggle. They were years before their time. The main problem being my mother who just had an absolute aberration about being happy - she constantly threw a monkey wrench into every successful business my father founded. Eventually destroying the family itself.

My middle class life came at the price of selling off the acquisitions of my father and mine's lives. Things we each acquired - having to find new homes for them. Things we told ourselves we'd never sell, sold. Scouring thousands of newspaper 'classified ads' searching for ephemera that we could turn a profit on. Specializing in vintage real collectibles, not buying up modern pieces and then scalping them back to the people that wished they could get them in stores where they were sold. But finding truly rare things.

When I was paralyzed, I reinvented myself - created AICN - kept it going out of a sheer mad vision that it was worth doing when EVERYBODY TOLD ME IT WASN'T. You couldn't make money doing this, I was told. Once that changed, my father and I retired from the day to day selling of items. Vowing to try and create a collection that we would love. EVERYTHING that I've bought in the last 14 years is an item that if I sold it, would reasonably sell for at least 2 times what I paid for it, though most items I get fit into the old dealer concept of being able to turn them for 10 to 20 times the paid price. I buy cheap. Looking for items that go unobserved. Why? Because I do have a notion to eventually set up a great Pop Culture museum that I'll run in my old age. (you'll see) It isn't out of hoarding, it is to eventually share with a public. But I absolutely agree - I've been blessed. It is why I sleep so little, it is why I work somedays till I literally fall asleep at this keyboard. A good deal of the trips you hear about the various writers on the site taking and then giving coverage on this site - are often times set up by me. There's alot of emails required for each, sometimes being set up a year before the actual visit. At the same time, I am constantly working to create free astonishingly fun events for the readers of this site to attend, usually here in Austin, but everytime I can - I try to get studios to let us do the events all over the country and beyond that. BUT - that "value" is often called into question, though I feel it is absolutely wrong. The singular best way to sell a great movie is by screening it for the most rabid audience, so they can become your front line of passionate film advocates.

And the single greatest gift I've been given in my life is Yoko (Patricia) - cuz unlike you - she totally gets it.

And why do I still come to this site?

    by Red Ned Lynch

And feel just fine about Harry or any of the folks on here doing a bit of pimping for their friends?
This morning I was having a hard time figuring out the closing to what I think is a really strong bit I've written. And while it percolated, in a total stretch of time probably not exceeding thirty minutes I've read a half dozen items and...
Referenced The Giant Gila Monster
Used Catherine of Aragon to illustrate a point
Listed three actual legends about gila monsters.
Made two Disney allusions and subsequently accepted Talkbacker with no name's offer of a romantic liaison
Trashed out four shows in one post while restating my feelings about the end of Lost
Posted about John Keel's very creepy Mothman Prophecies
Made a bad True Blood joke.
And while I was doing this I realized that the shade of Petey's father has to see Coventry in the ballroom garden. It's a cheat if he can't, and though it's a cheat I could probably get away with I'd know it was there, which was why the words stopped coming.
Oh, and I just got to take a shot at Wes Craven, who has made a couple three really good movies but has also produced some pretty thoroughgoing crap.

I'm curious how many people like me, that used to post regularly, don't anymore because of the morons who've sucked all the fun out of it?
Harry, it's your site. If you do want to summarily ban those that are idiots, that are ruining it (would you not have more TB posts from folks like me if the jerks were banned?), that is your god-given right. Yes, you might lose some readers, but you might gain (or re-gain) many more.
I can appreciate that you are all for taking the good with the bad, but even your broad shoulders must have a breaking point.
And... Just to keep the thread: I can't wait to see how RPO will translate from the book (which I'm dying to read), to the big screen.
I grew up with all of those characters, and it would be a hoot to see them in a modern movie.

I just don't think it's worth discussing. You aren't going to change Harry's perspective by telling him how stupid you think he sounds. It's not constructive. If you know the barest details of Harry's life you'll find that although he's been fortunate in many ways, in other ways, his personal life has been pretty f'ed up between what happened with his mom and spending most of his adult life on crutches or in a wheelchair. You yelling at him (or any TBer) about how warped his sense of reality is on a website he bled and cried for to build as a hobby then career--that is completely free for your usage and encouraged as a friendly social geek "town hall" of sorts--is pointless and more than a little mean. Other than the occasional shot at the political right that is often uninformed and overly harsh, Harry's opinions, or any of the opinions on this board, are not getting worked up over.

In any case, I apologize. You aren't a troll. You are, however, overreacting to Harry's weekend ramblings.

  • June 20, 2010, 3:51 p.m. CST

Harry, being part of the problem...

    by D.Vader

Well, the thing about that is, in the past, I DID send in stories I had read on other websites, but I never got a response. I'd send it to a few different people and would hear nothing back from them, and then the story would never even get posted on AICN.
So after that happens, and after reading other talkbackers say the same thing (which they could be lying about), I end up getting the sense that the editors and contributors just don't care.
Now, it is definitely not my fault, or the talkbackers fault, that AICN is behind the times on the news. That fault lies squarely on you guys. You can't try to pass the buck.
In the Golden Days, yes, a lot of stories were passed on by we readers who caught the news somewhere else. If you guys are inundated with SPAM, I'm sorry. But in the past, I did send in links to stories that went ignored, and that just told me that you guys didn't care.
For 14 years you guys have been my favorite site. But for the past year, I've started going to other places like Slashfilm and Cinematical, because those guys get the stories days before Merrick even notices. And I single Merrick out because it seems like he is the ONLY one who ever posts a story that isn't a review or an interview. You do it too, occasionally, Harry. But Capone? Massa? They only seem to do reviews. Quint makes cameo appearances. I've even seen Hercules make a few news posts that weren't Coaxial related, and I can only assume he stepped up because he saw AICN failing to report on the cool news everyone else was talking about the day before.
So, if you're going to have a big AICN meeting with everyone, I applaud that decision. Because you can't disagree that the site has slipped, that the attention being paid today isn't the same as it was a few years ago. I don't like having to go to other website to get my fix of movie news and rumors. I'd prefer to get it all in one place like I used to. If that means bringing someone else on board, someone whose job is just to read the other sites scouring for news, so be it. I do that everyday before (and during) work, so I know there's got to be plenty of others who can do it if you and Merrick are too busy with real life.
I just hope the place improves.

Random stab in the dark, neither here nor there...

I think this site has (depending on your perspective) either outgrown its original purpose or simply been surpassed by outlets who don't mind expending far too much energy on collecting dirt.

When AICN first came up, it was perfect. I was in my early 20's. The new Star Wars movies were still on the horizon. There was a mystery and excitment about "insider info." Now, largely thanks to sites like AICN, moviemaking is largely transparent in so many ways that true "scoops" barely even exist anymore because the studios know now that between DVD extras and crap like Entertainment Tonight they can sell the making of a movie just as well as the movie itself...and furthermore I (and millions like me) are now at the age where WHO FUCKING CARES?

I like to read reviews, hear interesting opinions, and once in a while, hear a bit of news. I like the AICN boards because they are constantly changing and full of people in my general wheelhouse of interest. But I don't give a shit if they're filming a secret alternate ending to the Dark Knight follow-up. I don't care if they are wooing Jack Nicholson to play Uncle Ben in the Spidey reboot. I just want a little bit of free entertainment in my day. AICN provides that. So it's not what it used to be? None of us are. When I start paying a subscription to view the site, I'll give a real shit about its "decline" and if Harry sells the site outright to FOX/Newscorp I'll stop coming here. Beyond that, why is there so much passionate hatred and snark kicked up about what this site has become?

You can't go home again. Let it go. Or...shit, create something better on your own and hell, I'll surf by and support it.

MCVamp you seem to be directing that at me

    by D.Vader

For what reason, I can't gather, since I'm not displaying "passionate hared or snark", but I am complaining about this site's decline, and did so just before your post. Hence why it seems like you're directing your post at me. Anyway...
I'll tell you why I don't like the way this site has declined: because it gives me the sense that AICN doesn't care about its readers anymore. You can bitch and complain and say "well its Harry's site, not yours, he can do what he wants," and I can turn around and say "well, I'm one of his readers, one of his fans, so I can complain anytime I damn well please when I don't like the product he is putting out."
Red Ned Lynch above said he doesn't care if news gets posted late here because he mainly cares about the talkbackers and the community. I care about them too. But I like to be able to converse with the talkbackers about a story when I hear it. Sometimes I'll be at Slashfilm and read a great story and I can't wait to come here to discuss it, because here at AICN are where the fun debates are had. And there's nothing more disappointing than to wait 2 days for the chance to talk about it with your talkback buddies or enemies. But by the time AICN posts it, you have probably already moved on and no longer care about it.
AICN may still care about its readership and its website. But I don't get that sense very often anymore.

    D Vader...

    by Red Ned Lynch

...just about every time you post I like you more. That last post you made was an extremely eloquent expression of a legitimate concern by a regular here who obviously cares about this site.
Bravo.

  • June 20, 2010, 4:32 p.m. CST

    Thank you Red Ned

    by D.Vader

I appreciate that very much. I'm glad you didn't think I was bitching just to bitch or trying to take potshots at Harry. Its just, I started going here when I was 14 years old. I learned SO much about film and cinema from this website alone. Harry and his site have been essential in forming the person I am today, the film geek turned filmmaker. I looked up to Harry and his encyclopedic knowledge of films.
So when I come back to this website and see what appears to me to be a lack of care, a general disinterest, a "we'll do it when we do it" sort of attitude, it hurts a little bit. Its like finding out one of your childhood heroes is a grade-A asshole when you meet him later in life.
Its like, wow, this site meant so much to me and helped shape my decision to be a filmmaker, and now that I'm older I feel bad that this place is somewhat of a joke sometimes.
Anyway, Red Ned, I like you too. You're one of the good guys around here. Keep up the good work. You should come join us in the Pedalback sometime.

Time does not exist in this dojo

    by Cobra--Kai

Lot of reflection going on on this thread. The dojo believes reflection is good for the soul... so in that spirit here's something of an aicn 'mission statement' from 1999....
This is FATHER GEEK posting on the subject of TALKBACK policy. To put it simply, this is the way it is, the way it will be, the way most of us at AICN's Headquarters want it. And for your information every desenter from this policy on our staff wants harder, stricter policies..... or NO TALKBACK AT ALL!
First off, TALKBACK is not a CHAT ROOM, or a MESSAGE BOARD, or for that matter even a totally free and open FORUM. It is not a DATING SERVICE, or a CLASSIFIED AD SECTION, or a no holes barred LINKS page. It is not a center to tryout your comedy standup routines, nor is it SPAMMING central. It was never intended, or conceived to be such things! It's purpose as Harry envisioned and designed it was/is to give you the AICN reader a place to discuss the "paticular" story/review/news event that appears above any given TALKBACK section in a THOUGHTFUL and CIVIL manner. And in keeping with the style and content of the site in general and the article it appears under in paticular. It was not established to be a site to insult, humiliate, or degrade fellow talkbackers, or our writers & staff, or the subjects of our stories.
When, if ever, has AINT-IT-COOL story policy stooped to the tabloid level of personal attack? Do we publish stories about Hollywood personality's personal lives? Do we tell all about a star's drinking or drug problems? Do we tell you who slept with who after someone's hellspawned party last night? Do we do stories on how much a person is paid, or who's getting a divorce, or even getting married for that matter? NO we don't! We get alot of this information, its very easy for us to come by. But NO, we don't use it and WE NEVER WILL. That's one of the reason's stars, writers, directors, and their agents, or friends talk openly with us about their work... they know that THAT (the work) is what we at AICN are interested in, not their personal lives. If the site's policy is to not dig into the private affairs of these people in our story content then what makes anyone think that we would condone, or tolerate that behavior in our TALKBACK sections. We won't and people who bring it up will be BANNED when caught, people who prolong and enter into such discussions will have their posts deleted when caught no matter which side of the issue they take. If they persist in bringing up the subject they too can find themselves banned. It takes long enough to download some talkbacks as it is. Why would we let them fill up with subject matter in violation of our own editoral policies? Or totally off the subject ramblings, or personal posts that should be sent to us by E-mail, or snail-mail for that matter.
To address the issue of cursing in talkbacks, 1st we're not a bunch of prigs over here. I think everyone on the staff has used curses from time to time to illustrate a point. We discourage such language in your subject lines. "It Fucking rocks", "This movie is bullshit", etc. as shallow as they are won't get you banned. If however you get personal with your 4 letter words ( "blank takes it up the ass", etc...) you could easily find yourself locked out of TALKBACK. There are several members of our staff that have the power to DELETE messages and/or BAN posters. HARRY actually does very little of this, his time is more useful to the site spent elsewhere; finding and writing the news, reviews, etc. Some longtime members of our staff argue constantly for total removal of TALKBACK from the page. Others urge us to avoid covering stories that we suspect will lead to rabid TALKBACK ABUSE. Stories on the X-MEN and STAR WARS for example. HARRY and I have so-far resisted these arguments and Harry has no plans at present to cancel TALKBACK even though our E-mail is bombarded daily with dozens of requests to do so.
Harry and I both feel that despite its shortcomings TALKBACK when used properly is a GREAT and VALUABLE asset to the content of the site and we don't want to lose that IMPORTANT addition to the page. And we most certainly don't want to shelve stories simply because of a relative few jerkwads that just happen to hang out in the talkbacks like stalkers in the alley behind your house. As a result several valuable members of our headquarters team including myself, and to a lesser degree Harry, have to waste their time policing the talkbacks for everything from hatred, bigotry, offensive language in the subject lines, and near-slander to mindless dribble and simple double posting, from eliminating "I'm 1st" space takers to people testing their passwords and posting blank spaces. This is time, several hours a day, we could, and should, spend uncovering the news, not uncovering filth and stupidity and simple thoughtlessness scattered thru the talkbacks.
You can get away with alot in talkback, we don't have a fulltime paid talkback editor... YET. However when we do see abuses, the many different things I've addressed here today, we will act on them and delete the posts. Unfortunatly this sometimes leads to the deleting of posts that simply refer to the offending ones. The subject of the post sometimes requires this, sorry. If deletion doesn't work then we will ban the guilty party. If the post is rabid or hateful, or offensive enough you could find yourself BANNED for a single posting and all you have ever written (even GOOD stuff) disappears at that time to never reappear. Such is the punishment of being Banned. We delete 100 times for every time we ban. We don't enjoy doing it and when TALKBACK was started we didn't even write into the software the ability to delete or ban. That's how little we thought of any need for it. Unfortunately we quickly learned otherwise.
Now FATHER GEEK wants to congratulate the great majority of our talkbackers, you do a wonderful service for the site. You add to story content. You clarify issues. You raise important questions and others of you answer them. You provide pertinent links and make us smile on occasion. You add extra reviews and offer up much needed thoughtful dissenting opinions to give the site balance. YOU are why Harry started TALKBACK and YOU are why we intend to work hard to keep it on track, up and running. Sorry to put you all through this, but inlight of the recent X-Men excesses I felt that I had to address the subject. FATHER GEEK out.

Not so much you, D. Vader

    by MCVamp

I'm not as regular as I used to be thanks to a busy life in general, but every other time I pop in, I see "THATS WHY THIS SITE SUCKS NOW" or "HARRY IS JUST A SELLOUT WHO SUCKS HIS INDUSTRY FRIENDS' DICKS FOR KICKBACKS". And really, that turns me off far more than any perceived lack of "News."
