And The Current Writer Of The LOGAN'S RUN Re-Adaptation Is...

Published at:  Jun 17, 2010 8:46:37 AM CDT

Merrick here...

Alex Garland (28 DAYS LATER, SUNSHINE, the unmade HALO movie) looks to be the current writer of Joel Silver's LOGAN'S RUN redux. Garland is also writing that new JUDGE DREDD movie we keep hearing about.

Although best remembered as the 1976 film starring Michael York, Jenny Agutter and Farrah Fawcett, “Run” began as a 1967 novel by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson; it’s the book, which had a greatly expanded world compared to the movie, that the studio and producers Joel Silver and Akiva Goldsman are turning to.

...says THR HERE.

Alex isn't the first person to recently take a crack at re-adapting William F. Nolan's literary source material. For example, several years ago CHILDREN OF MEN scripter Tim Sexton was on board this effort. A few weeks back, Carl Erik Rinsch became the most recent in a long line of directorial candidates for the picture. This LOGAN project has become a revolving door for intriguing talent (at one point, NINJA ASSASSIN's James McTeigue and TRON LEGACY's Joseph Kosinski were involved), so it's difficult to take these new developments too seriously.

However, if you're looking to be entertained by a far more certain LOGAN interpretation, consider checking out Bluewater Productions' LOGAN'S RUN comic books - they're solid, rich, smart, and they're evidently working with Nolan to ensure some level of vision control. Bluewater's set up an ebay store HERE. I'm enjoying these immensely, and if you've any interest in experiencing the breadth of LOGAN'S universe (far more elaborate than the '76 movie), I highly recommend these.

I just noticed that 1977's short lived LOGAN'S RUN TV series is now available on demand HERE. This is interesting because the show itself has yet to be (officially) issued on DVD, although director Michael Anderson's 1976 thatrical version was recently released on THIS startlingly inadequate Blu-Ray.

Very few "extras" and I don't think it's a good transfer of the film - looks soft and muted. At $10 I suppose one could do worse, but it's hard to image future releases might not look considerably better.

    by frankenstone

even with its many, many flaws. However, this was one of the first summer blockbusters (if not the first) to sacrifice a coherent and logical ending for the sake of big stupid explosions and feel -good nonsense. I mean, the computer is smart enough to keep thousands of people alive for hundred of years but when faced with the fact that "There is NO Sanctuary" it just melts down and explodes half of the city. Or the idea that Logan is a hero - by causing the destruction of the domed city, he has doomed most of its population to certain death - these people have been fed and cared for by the central computer their entire lives - now they are all going to starve, if they don't freeze to death first in their flimsy and revealing robes.

Why is this not an Andy Samberg vehicle.

    by pants_mccracky

Samberg plays a 29 year old slacker living in his parents' bio-dome. As he nears his 30th birthday, he's fine with going to Carousel since he's pretty much been a loser in life, but he's never been with a lady! So he and his buddy (a hilarious cameo by Aziz Ansari) embark on a quest to get Samberg laid before Last Day. You got your mandatory sequence of dating failures with a succession of freaks and overweight women, then as Carousel looms he meets-cute with Jessica (Mila Kunis). I'm stopping there because I've given you people enough. What do I have to write the script for you?

    My take

    by lornsorrow

I love Logan's Run a great deal. It is one of the first films I ever saw in the 70's as a kid. And some years back, I had a name change (my last name was for shit) so I changed my middle name to Logan, all because of this film. I Love it!

I have the three novels, and though there certainly is a huge world there, I can't say I'm a big fan of the way they are written, or of some of their content. For myself, it is one of those rare cases where the film actually surpassed the source material. So, I'm not sure if a new movie, one that is being more loyal to the source, is such a good thing. I love the film, and what some people look at as flaws, I've always seen fairly easy to explain. Sure, it could be done, updated, but I don't really see the need. Whatever. I'd probably watch a remake, and probably dislike it, but who knows. Doubt they could get actors with the same caliber of the original.

    Logan's Run the TV nightmare...

    by red ned lynch

...is on the short list for being the worst genre show ever made. They added Donald Moffat (from The Thing and a bunch of other, better stuff) as a friendly android who joined Logan and Jess on their adventures in and around abandoned "super modern" 60s buildings. Greg Harrison who went on to do bigger tv things, played Logan, and Heather Menzies, from Sssss and Piranha, played Jessica. So so terribly bad. But it had a killer opening theme. Lot of bad tv in the 70s but a lot of good music over the opening credits.

    by mr lucas

I haven't read the books, but I say the TV series holds up well. Better than the movie with its silly last reel. The TV show had some interesting concepts and had some good writers working on it. It certainly compares well to most of the genre dreck churned out these days. It certainly was not 'terribly bad' and not even close to being on a shortlist of the worst anything. If you watch it with no expectations, I think you'll enjoy it.

and probably a few other writers from the ST realm. Still not available on dvd yet. Part of the reason may be that it only had 10 or so episodes. That's a touch commitment for a production company to make (but that may change when the new movie comes out.) Same with the out of print novels. Being that i pick up everything ellison, logan will be an automatic buy. Still need to get the vic n blood graphic novel and The Starlost tv show and then my obsession will be complete. I get the warm and fuzzies every time I watch the Lloyd Bridges or Patrick Macnee two parters of BSG, too, and I still smile at Roddy McDowell soldiering bravely through crap. The most interesting thing about the Saul David/ Michael Anderso

    by carsondyle62

...is the story behind the film's making (lovingly chronicled in the Fall `76 issue of Cinefantastique).

The problem with adapting this particular novel is that it's very much a creature of the time in which it was written.

Once upon a time there was this thing called "The Generation Gap," and the cultural tensions associated therewith provided Nolan and Johnson with a strong thematic hook. At the time, back in the 60's, young people were all too primed to rebel against authority as manifested by their elders.

How times have changed. Most young people I know can't wait to become their parents, and the notion of "youth in revolt" has become a dramatic non-starter. It will be interesting to see by what means the latest screenwriter-for-hire manages to make the material relevant. Garland certainly isn't the first to try, and I doubt he'll be the last.

God help the WGA when it comes time to arbitrate the final writing credits.

As much of a fan of science fiction as I am, I've never liked "Logan's Run."
The premise of the story is way too simple. And too banal to be believed as part of any human existence. It ignores cutting edge science and all that might come with it. Sorry, but it just does.
If there's a godlike AI controlling the human population of the story, then yes, I could get behind it. Because all of a sudden, it becomes a struggle for existence. Which is far more dramatic than the book or the 70's movie.
I wish Alex Garland well on this. I hope he injects some life into what I consider to be a lifelessly simplistic story.
