FLASH GORDON
One of my most beloved kidhood film experiences that rocks with the power of QUEEN and probably one of the gaudiest non-Schumacher productions ever concocted. As someone that was raised on Alex Raymond FLASH GORDON Sunday Pages (one of the collections that my Dad treasured) I was always disappointed that this wasn't a bit more serious - but then, that wasn't the point. This was a high camp adaptation of FLASH GORDON and in those terms - it is nearly impossible to hate on this. QUEEN's music should have never worked, but it does - magnificently so. The garish colors simply created a fantasy universe unlike anything we'd seen before or sense. Proof that it doesn't need to be real to be real fun. All hail Brian Blessed, Timothy Dalton and Max Von Sydow!!! And can we all agree that the reason to have this film on Blu Ray - is so we can all scientifically exam every last from of Ornella Muti's Princess Aura? I'm not sure how this and DARKMAN escaped me last night. I've watched both Blu Rays - but some reason when assembling the list, my eyes glossed over these two GOT TO GET releases. Very much worth it.

DARKMAN
This is Sam Raimi's SHADOW & BATMAN film combined with a smidggen of HOUSE OF WAX. And ya know what? I've been a card-carrying member of the DARKMAN RULES SOCIETY since this weird oddball of a blast exploded in 1990. Liam Neeson's performance is something rather amazing to watch here. It is... unhinged. Some of the composited shots look pretty funky by today's standards, but this delirously insane production absolutely delights. Essentially the same disc as the HD-DVD version. Which was outstanding.

MYSTERY TRAIN (Criterion Blu)
Freshman year of college – while reading the Austin Chronicle, I saw a promo pass give away for something called MYSTERY TRAIN directed by somebody named Jarmusch. Up until this particular fated screening, I was in love with film – in a way that people that love Mainstream films and that love Vintage films love films – but I was about to have something new to chew on, to obsess and get all compulsive about. The new American Wave in Independent film. The 90s had most of it, but 1989’s Jarmusch classic… MYSTERY TRAIN. A film about a scene, a lifestyle, a rhythm, a way to strut. MYSTERY TRAIN was my PULP FICTION. By the time Tarantino launched that Indie Film scene through the roof… I was already talking about this story about seemingly unrelated storylines that all converge in this hipper than hip universe that Jarmusch created for Memphis. The Japanese Tourists… so fucking cool. Watching this movie the other day with Yoko was so much fun. I love the stressing of Carl Perkins – I LOVE SCREAMIN’ JAY HAWKINS!!! I love the texture of Memphis, which is so beautifully rendered on this Blu Ray. I fucking love the uncompressed monaural soundtrack – giving this that vinyl wall of sound sound that just makes me smile. This is my first and very favorite Jarmusch film. He’s still a vital filmmaker and I love NIGHT ON EARTH and STRANGER THAN PARADISE… but MYSTERY TRAIN was a transformational film for me. It started me searching for the “odder” filmmakers at the video store. This was the same point in my life that I began discovering the Coens, Raimi, Peter Jackson – followed quicky by Tarantino, Linklater, Rodriguez… this was also when I started devouring Film Noir, the American Gangster films, the 50s musicals, Asian cinema of the 80’s and 90s. And I can say all that started with MYSTERY TRAIN. A gateway film for me. It led me to alternative cool video stores like VULCAN and I LUV VIDEO… It led me to the Austin Film Society and advance screenings in general. MYSTERY TRAIN was a life changer. This is a movie that cries to be devoured, digested and discussed. It is… a complete evening all by itself. The conversation starter. And at the very least, it really makes ya want to check out Memphis.
Criterion gives you the following extras:
Q&A with Jarmusch in which he responds to questions sent in by fans
Documentary on Mystery Train's locations and Memphis's musical history
On-set photos by Masayoshi Sukita, and behind-the-scenes photos
New and improved English subtitle translation
PLUS: A booklet featuring essays by writers Peter and Dennis Lim
Collectible poster
Strongest possible recommendation. Fantastic film!

THE BOOK OF ELI
I really really really like this movie, BUT the Mila Kunis ending – grates me like you wouldn’t believe. It seriously hasn’t sat well, although EVERYTHING ELSE about it is bliss! I love Denzel, Oldman and Ray Stevenson – so so much. The very end ending just not so much. That said, I seem to be in a minority with that feeling. Pay attention closely to the soundtrack and how it relates to camera movement. I noticed while watching this the other night, that you’ll begin to hear something to the left or the right side of the screen, then the camera would turn to the sound. Really is a neat little sound mixing bit that they use a few times in the film. Looks beautiful on Blu – and as for extras?
Maximum Movie Mode: 40 minutes of picture-in-picture commentary with Denzel Washington and the Hughes Brothers, and 10 Focus Points
Additional scenes
A Lost Tale: Billy--animated short covering Carnegie's backstory
Starting Over: Explore the role we might play in reshaping society after a global catastrophe
Soundtrack: Co-director Allen Hughes and composer Atticus Ross compare notes about the soundtrack's construction and deconstruction
Eli's Journey: Probe the historical and mythological roots of the film's central themes

WHEN IN ROME
Absolutely not worth it at all. None of it works for me. Not the premise, the characters, the humor… it just rang untrue and unneeded. Watch ROMAN HOLIDAY instead. The guy is dreamier and so is the girl in that one.

MACGYVER: THE TV MOVIES
The most important thing you may ever choose to do. Check the sack and sit back. MACGYVER is on!

UNTHINKABLE
I really like this film. Essentially a film that explores the lengths that we as a society may go to feel safe and to keep us safe. The film is a nightmare scenario about a man who may have placed nuclear devices in multiple major cities in the United States. He is caught in advance of the explosions… and is extremely interrogated. By Sam Jackson. And Sam is all kinds of awesome, as is Carrie Anne Moss and Michael Sheen. And you come away from the film wondering, what would we do in this situation?

SHOWGIRLS (Blu Ray)
I love that the world changed on this film. This movie has had quite a journey. Almost universally loathed, until one magical day the subconscious of the audience began to hear the laugh track – to get the giggles and to relax and have a whole helluvalot of fun with a gleefully retarded bit of bliss.
NOW – the sad news. No extras.. I want crazy elaborate extras. Every bit of footage shot. I want all the doc footage. We need to see every scrap of everything about the making, conception and execution of SHOWGIRLS. But, I’ll take the movie for now!

YOUTH IN REVOLT
I think it is hilarious that Owen Glieberman thinks Michael Cera’s inner Douche is a Badass. Now, don’t get me wrong, I love Michael Cera’s Inner Douche – as that Douche does hilariously douchey over the top lunacy about as wonderful as you could hope for. I love the idea that Michael Cera’s dad was Steve Buscemi. For some reason, that concept alone is comedy gold. The notion that your dad is Steve Buscemi and that he’s banging hot chicks while Michael Cera is a Virgin… is AWESOME! I just really like this crazy universe. And I think Portia Doubleday could get Jesus cursing.

COLLAPSE
A sickening vision of the very probable future, by someone that has been right before. It is gonna get worse. If you see TOY STORY 3 this weekend and you just feel too positive about life, watch this. It’ll set ya right. Everyone should probably take a look at this. It is a very reasoned argument about what is coming next. But thanks to the iPad, all of this will be averted.

VENGEANCE TRILOGY (SYMPATHY FOR MR VENGEANCE / OLDBOY / LADY VENGEANCE) Blu Ray
One of the great thematic trilogies ever made. Like RED, WHITE, BLUE. Like THE MAN WITH NO NAME. These 3 films are of a type, an exploration of a theme. Tartan continues to properly exploit Park Chan Wook’s greatness. You know THIRST is on NETFLIX INSTANT. Click.

THE STEPFATHER (Blu Ray)
Watch THE STEPFATHER… now, rewatch LOST. If you thought Locke gave ya the creeps before… JESUS! I had not seen this. Not sure how I missed it, guess it didn’t play Wichita Falls in 1987. And for some reason I never found it on video. This is a damn fine slasher/serial killer style flick – and while it is all kinds of ridiculous feeling, IT IS ALL TRUE! Giggle. Locke is such a good Vorhees!

BURMA VJ: REPORTING FROM A CLOSED COUNTRY
Now – if you know anything about Burma, you probably don’t WANT to see what is in this riveting documentary. Maybe you’ve seen BEYOND RANGOON. Maybe you’ve just heard about it from Stallone. Whatever… realize there are places on this planet where it is all wrong. Where evil is dominant and not in decline. This film causes a strong gut reaction. To be seen.

HORSEMAN (Blu Ray)
This could very well be my favorite film that Tim League has introduced me to. That the director is like just getting pubes blows my mind. As the film is extremely grown up. The way the story is told heightens everything. Do not gang bang and od a handiman’s daughter. Seriously bad idea. A film to watch with that Vengeance trilogy. If nothing else – study these fight scenes Hollywood. MORE LIKE THIS!

BLIND MENACE
Before he was a Blind Badass Samurai – Shintaro Katsu was THE BLIND MENACE. A vile blind masseur. Up to zero fucking good. I loved this. For one, just seeing a younger Shintaro Katsu doing the blind stuff. This is a real jewel to finally get to see. Very recommended.

SLEAZY SCI-FI OF THE 1970s
Sue me, I like 2069: A SEX ODYSSEY. I do think it would make for an excellent Porn Remake. INVASION OF THE BEE GIRLS is funny – in a – you’ll make yourself laugh while watching it. Because you won’t be able to not comment verbally. And honestly, I’ve not seen DR. DILDO’S SECRET – which is thankfully going to be remedied. The two I have seen were fun, while not entirely satisfying to a genre lover wanting more from his genre porn. None of these threatens FLESH GORDON’s reign!
That’s it for this week. Not much coming out today I know. Well next week, Robert Pattinson in the astonishing REMEMBER ME, Matt Damon in GREEN ZONE, AVATAR THE LAST AIRBENDER: THE COMPLETE BOOK 1, THE LAST STATION, SHE’S OUT OF MY LEAGUE, A STAR IS BORN BluRay, CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS Bluray 3D Version (the future is here), RED DESERT (Criterion Blu), DEATH RACE 2000 Blu, FUEL, CLOSE-UP Criterion Blu, TROMEO AND JULIET Blu, WOLF MOON,

I forgot about Collapse. I read reviews of it upon its release, but it didn't seem to be at any theaters. I will probably get that one on Netflix. Good call on recommending Roman Holiday over When in Rome. Showgirls has been on HBO lately. The pool scene...the spastic flopping around...I have no words for it.
-
Can't believe you haven't seen The Stepfather!
-
Fucking Rocks!!
-
...youth in revolt.
-
And she really is the only reason I would ever consider watching "When in Rome." I wish Rob Thomas would just hurry up and make a Veronica Mars movie.
-
Absolutely an underrated gem, thanks in large part to Terry O'Quinn's great performance. Just avoid the sequels and remake like the plague.
-
Then I'll go and watch your movie. Although, knowing me, I'll probably change my mind just before starting it and go back and rewatch Lost again.
Awesome show with a lot of heart. -
There's no need to be very alarmed by his paranoia. Not that the stuff he's predicting can't happen, but he's hardly a credible expert. He is convinced the CIA has been trying to kill him since the 70s. He thinks the CIA is after him because he accused it of dealing drugs in 1978 (not that the CIA ignored the associates of the Contras who smuggled drugs in the 80s, but that CIA agents were themselves dealing drugs in LA going back to the Carter years, and the LAPD covered it up, which is all totally nuts). Furthermore he's one of the nutjobs who believe in 9/11 conspiracies, such as he thinks Dick Cheney was behind 9/11. However, Collapse can be an entertaining film if you don't take it too seriously, because it is an interesting portrait of a guy who has lost it. Just realize that the "collapse" that is depicted is the guy's sanity.
-
SHOWGIRLS is a film that has to be seen. Firstly it's by Verhoeven so the cinematography is fantastic. Secondly it features the worst ever sex scene in a theatrical release - Elizabeth Berkley splashing around in the swimming pool like a drowning spastic.
You can imagine Verhoeven's direction "Yas Lizzie, he is dur fisherman you are dur fish. His hook and line are in yur vageen and you do not want to be caught. So splash for your life little fishy! Splash I say!" -
The show is still pretty watchable (although it holds of course no comparison to modern Television), but the TV movies are flat out boring.
-
Saw it in the cinema, no real urge to see it again despite its classy cast and looks. Strange.
-
I can just imagine Verhoeven coming out with that shit... dude is completely cracked but in a good way. Showgirls is a movie I can't decide whether it is so retarded it's genius or if it's just retarded.
-
It's a fascinating movie and there are some realities we need to grow up and deal with, but the guy is also clearly not all their. I entirely get the dude looking at the state of the world and just thinking "how do you not fucking get this" but I'm not sure I agree with every conclusion he makes... It's also kind of important to include the CIA conspiracy stuff as it does put the guys state of mind in context.
-
Truly epic writing.
-
Porco, hehe thx dude.
-
The departure of Paul Verhoeven from Hollywood says, for me, a lot about the state of the present day blockbuster. He scaled heights of violence and tastelessness that make the likes of Michael Bay just seem crass and childish. He has a genuine political (in widest sense of the word) sensibility, that makes his blockbusters FAR more interesting than they initially seem. ROBOCOP and STARSHIP TROOPERS are his US masterpieces, I think, but BASIC INSTINCT and SHOWGIRLS are way better than their reputation will ever suggest. And of course TOTAL RECALL is astonishingly entertaining. The only US film I don't like is HOLLOW MAN.
-
That was sarcasm i'm hoping.
-
and the "twist".Jesus Fucking Christ that was retarded.Oh, and Denzel should have had a wheelbarrow if that was a real Braille Bible.
-
Mr Gorilla, actually I saw HOLLOW MAN again quite recently on Blu in its extended cut and the extra footage does improve it slightly. Not a massive improvement (I still agree it's his weakest US movie) but the film certainly has more time to breath (the original cut had Kevin Bacon go from workaholic to serial killer way too quickly). Plus HOLLOW MAN features Rhona Mitra nudity and Elizabeth Shue looking arguably her most adorable.
-
One of the toughest films ever made. Fuck yes.
-
agreed, that movie kicks ass, hardcore as steel!!!!
-
....Badass.
Terrible cover there. The blurb is misleading if you don't know what the true title is.
I will have to say Showgirls' cover would be a real eyecatcher if there were actual video stores to walk through. -
Hollow Man was underwhelming at the time but looks like a masterpiece compared to the shit we get nowadays.
Robocop is astonishing. I watched it again the other night and its as fresh and vibrant as the first day I saw it. -
The idea of interrogating Michael Sheen Jackson-style appeals to me. After seeing Sheen in the retarded Underworld films, and playing the role of Tony Blair about thirteen times, I really can't fucking stand him. Anyway, the next film I'm going to see is The Horseman.
-
It drops on blu today, ya know.
-
"That the director is like just getting pubes blows my mind.""Do not gang bang and od a handiman’s daughter."
-
It's the american way...
-
If you are filming crap and know it, you are commiting a venial sin. Nobody expects Bikini Car Wash 3 to ba any good. But Showgirls was supposed to be GOOD. They thought they were filming great art when they did it.
-
is piss poor apparently, what a pity.
-
You're not allowed to douche out like you did in that first review if you've never seen a geek staple like The Stepfather. I mean, come on. My mom's seen that one.
-
An Australian film I heard about nearly 2yrs ago, an Australian film that as Australian I STILL HAVEN'T FUCKING SEEN BECAUSE IT HASN'T BEEN RELEASED HERE!!!
Honestly, this is fucking crazy. -
Ummm....Harry.....I think you forgot Darkman and Flash Gordon hitting Blu-ray today via Universal. Any thoughts on these two?
-
I'm also wondering what the hell. Everyone moans and complains about the aussie film industry and then something apparently good gets made and no release?? but wogboy 2 oh yes that gets wide release. We have a strange film industry here in australia.
-
robogeisha is getting an australian release tomorrow (16/6) ... yay?
-
only needs 19 words.
Harry is the MacGuyver of movie writers!
(I don't know whether that sounds insulting or complimentary, but it was suppose to be a compliment) -
no one is dreamier than Kristin Bell!
-
Rodriguez being pursued for the Deadpool movie. Jackson being pressured to direct Hobbit.
-
OLDBOY was a total mindfuck the first time I watched it and Lady vengeance is a bit warped. I love the different approach Park uses for the same subject matter.
A great series. -
Checked out IMDB and it was written by Nicholas(Wrath of Khan) Meyer!
-
"INVASION OF THE BEE GIRLS is funny – in a – you’ll make yourself laugh while watching it. Because you won’t be able to not comment verbally. "How can "When In Rome" be bad when the quote on the DVD says it is "hilarious"? It's printed on the box, so it must be true, right? It's not like they pick the only nice thing anyone said about the movie, regardless of how obscure the source may be, right? I wonder if the guy from CBS-TV, in his weekly DVD column, pointed out the fact they used his quote.Hey, this comes from the studio that brought us "The Proposal". I guess that's supposed to be some kind of incentive. Although, it's not like it came from the writer, director, or even producers of that movie, it simply came from the same studio. Kind of a stretch. Not only is the movie "flat out hilarious" but the alternate ending is also "hilarious". At least they used a review from a major media outlet for the DVD. The ads for the movie used quotes from Facebook users. To sum up, a quote from some obscure reviewer, the repetition of the word "hilarious", and a vague link to another recent film of the same genre. All in all this box tells me the marketing department didn't have much to work with. You know what, I think you can judge a DVD by its cover.
-
And a set of computer speakers for me this week.
-
I mean he would suck all the fun out of it and probably miscast the lead, but the gunshots will sound super realistic!∞
-
NOTHING ELSE comes out this week. NOTHING!!!
-
I love the Vengeance trlogy and need to check out the Horseman. You really had not seen the Stepfather? Sheesh.
-
...I always like to know where they stood on Y2K for reference. If they spent New Year's huddled with gallons of bottled water, it helps to set my expectations.
-
In this movie, Oldman looks like he literally hasn't had a shower in months!! He brings so much electricity to his roles and to a movie overall.
-
that he wears a damn trench coat in the desert!
-
It was my friend's bachelor party and we had arrived at the last bar on an interminable pub crawl. It was there one of the guys had approached a cute girl at the bar and asked her (in the form of a bribe) to go flirt with the groom to be. She approached, sat on his lap, cooed in his ear, but my friend only seemed bemused by it all. He asked why she came to our table. She said, Well, I heard it was your party but you don't look very happy. He pursed his lips and then said, Are you familiar with the films Jim Jarmusch? She roller her eyes and said something like "what-the-fuck-ever" and left. We all laughed and asked where he was going with that line. He said that in "Mystery Train" there's a young Japanese girl who asks her dour-faced boyfriend why he's not happy, but he answers that he is happy even if he's not showing it. And that's my only experience concerning that film.
-
is God.
-
For those who don't know (which I'd imagine would be pretty much everyone but Jim Jarmusch and me), Jarmusch was in a really cool New Wave band called the Del-Byzanteens. You can download their album, Lies to Live By, here.
-
Now, if they added a full-on Gina Gershawn/Elisbeth Berkley lesbian scene, I might buy it.
-
Thanks for y our description of Verhoeven's direction for that scene. I nearly choked on my tea.
-
You will rewatch LOST so you can finally be aware you have been had and manipulated by the advertizement department and showrunners who didn't had a fuckign clue what to do next and just invented shit on the spot all this years? Isn't that a bit too depressing for you?

Cobra--Kai - I'll never watch that scene the same way again!
by vic twenty
"Splash, little fishy!" Deep fried gold, that.
-
Like Kunrick's Eyes Wide Shut, it was heavily derided upon its initial release, usually by critics who didn't undertsand the modus opernadi of either director. Verhoeven is a twisted satirist, and Showgirls is perfectly in line with his other work. US audiences, in particular, seem to have trouble with his style; simply taking it on its cartoon surface level and with cloying earnstness. But the style of all his movies is deliberate and masks a sly humor and a twisted subversion of genre tropes.Showgirls is actually an X-rated fairytale, with Kyle MacLachlan as the warped Prince Charming, Gina Gershon as the wicked bi-sexual stepmother, and Elizabeth Berkely as the naive princess (it's no wonder they call her Pollyanna in the film); one whose real parents, as in most fairytales, are dead, except in this case the father murdered the mother and comitted suicide. Its a porno subversion of classic rags to riches tales, an adult Pretty Woman if you will, except at the end Berkely's character learns street smarts and independence after being put through the sleazy ringer, rather than ending as a soulless automaton betrothed to the handsome prince. The movie is absolutely hilarious and Vehoevn knew exactly what he was doing, twisting the conventions of the genre as well as he subverted the traditional Hollywood war film in Starship Troopers. Thankfully, the movie seems to be getting a little better understood these days. No, the only bad Verhoeven movie is Hollow Man, and even then, it isn't atrocious, just rather bland. Very little of the Mad Dutchman's usual skewed personality in it, and it's telling that it was the only US film he made that failed to get an NC-17 after first submission to the MPAA.
-
I had to find that out from some other site with a topless robot or something... Are the sets worthless??!
-
and cry because we are fucked
-
And I'm proud of that fact. That said, I absolutely hate the scene where Berkley's best friend gets beat up and raped by Robert Goulet. But, I hate those types of scenes in general. I just wish that she kicked the f*cking $hit out of that Mother F*cker more so than she did.
-
As Vic said, no other releases matter by comparison.
-
But still: how can it be that Darkman and Flash Gordon come to blu, yet there is not only no mention but also no apparent plans to mention them NEXT week!? (Both from Universal; maybe Harry didn't get sent copies and didn't want to promote them till he saw the transfers....)
-
Where else can you see Steve Buscemi acting alongside Joe Strummer of The Clash? Fucking great movie.
-
I first saw it in a film class in college in '88 - now that was a good class!
-
Yeah I read that Deadpool news ELSEWHERE AS USUAL and have to say a big fuck you to RR for once again side-tracking both Sin City and Madman once again.

Harry, check out "Screamin Jay: I Put a Spell on Me"
by the reluctant austinite
Hey Harry, I've got a Region Free/PAL DVD of an obscure (but AMAZING) documentary on Screamin' Jay Hawkins called "I Put a Spell on Me" which features interviews with Jim Jarmusch. I'm a huge Screamin' Jay fan, and ordered a copy of it years ago before it was so hard to find. I have no idea why no one ever picked it up for distribution in the USA. The director followed Screamin' Jay around during the last couple of years of his life, documenting his last concerts and his attempt to fullfill a lifelong dream of performing as an Opera singer. Jay tells some batshit crazy stories about his life, particularly a story about his war experiences! The documentary includes early, period concert footage and tells the story of his rise to fame and return to dive bar obscurity and ultimately to the big stage again, and includes inteviews with the people who knew him best in the last years of his life. THE ALAMO SHOULD FIND AND SHOW THIS FILM!
-
Do you remember hearing the rumor about the sequel? It would have Nomi heading to LA and getting involved in shit there as well. I just remember that. I had a huge crush on Elizabeth Berkley before Showgirls and even after, and I will also admit i saw it in the theater as well. Seeing her fully naked on the big screen is a sight...
-
FRENZY was the wedding song my wife and I had our big dance to. A tango. Her parents about lost their shit. Ahhh, good times....

Showgirls 2 was going to be called 'Bimbos'...
by turd_has_risen_from_the_grave
and would have involved Nomi in LA, taking on the movie business. Tales from the casting couch, indeed. I'm not sure if Verhoeven and Eszterharas were ever seriously considering the idea; they may have just concocted it for a laugh.
-
Done.
-
The UK got a director commentary and a ton of stuff. I read that Sam Jones and Melody Anderson even recorded a commentary, so where is it?

Unthinkable looks hilariously overacted, but it's Sam L. Jackson
by soylentmean
I really liked Lakeview Terrace and realized that the reason I liked it was Mr. Jackson's over the top cop. The previews for Unthinkable are terrible and laugable yet oddly this isn't the first recommendation I've seen for the film.
I'll eventually check it out. -
with Dennis Quaid. Because that movie sucked. A lot.
-
I'm talking films and television series. I love them all.
-
I thought that shit was coming in April (which sounds like a porn title).
-
thanks Harry
-
...but I just saw on IMDB that Avi Lerner has ordered a PG-13 cut of The Expendables and they're trying to decide now whether they'll release the PG-13 or R version to theaters. He thinks Rambo would have been even more successful if it was closer to a PG-13 and not so violent. I was expecting to see a major rant about this somewhere on the site. Maybe I missed it.
-
Wonderful news. The Expendables – the deliriously stupid-looking film about Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham and Jet Li and Eric Roberts and Mickey Rourke and Arnold Schwarzenegger and Dolph Lundgren punching things until they explode – will not be toned down to appease the censors. There had been a rumour from the film's producer himself that a more family-friendly edit could be tested with audiences, but that has now been officially dismissed by Lionsgate. It means that, if you go to see The Expendables, you'll basically be subjecting yourself to a constant barrage of bullet-holes and broken bones and pointlessly macho full-volume swearing.
-
I'm riht there with you, Harry. I watched this with my girlfriend in a crowded theater on opening night. Up until the end, I was mixed on it. But when Kunis threw on those sunglassess I laughed my ass off. I was the ONLY one to laugh. Everyone, including my girl, thought it was a great "moving" ending. It ruined the movie for me so much that I will not see it again. I love the Hughes Brothers. Can't wait to see what they do next.
-
..for adding Flash Gordon in...and at the top of the list, no less! (where it rightfully belongs..yes even over JJ and the Vengeance trilogy)
-
Was that article on this site? Did I just miss it?

Screamin' Jay's stories in "I Put a Spell on Me"
by the reluctant austinite
Jay tells one story about getting stuck in his coffin before a performance and literally shitting his pants in there. He was a singular performer, that much is certain. "Frenzy", "I Put a Spell on You", "Alligator Wine", "Constipation Blues"--the list goes on and on.
-
... that you didn't discover Raimi until after you saw MYSTERY TRAIN? Are you sure about that? You didn't see EVIL DEAD and EVIL DEAD 2 till 1989 or after? That's pretty questionable.
-
Early Sam Raimi - CRIMEWAVE, anyone remember that one? Never seen it mentioned on aicn before...
At the time CRIMEWAVE seemed like the craziest 'comic strip made real' movie i'd ever seen. No idea how it holds up today but at the time I thought it was a knockout. -
Why did I have to wait two years to see this movie? Jeez, what a great film!

Seriously, it's been on cable recently and I find it completely unwatchable. It's so bad, so filled with UNINTENTIONAL cheese that I physically cringe. Terrible movie. I want to see Collapse. Was going to say "looking forward to it", but that might be a bit much.I have The Horseman sitting here waiting to be watched. Your review has prompted me to watch it after the Laker game... and maybe Deadliest Catch. But tonight for sure.

Will always be Raimi's masterpieces. Army Of Darkness is ok but overrated. It's more a film geeks profess to love to show how geeky they are. Spiderman1 feels very much like a light teenage remake of Darkman.

Why hasn't there been an authentic SE release of Darkman?
by nasty in the pasty
You have a comic book revenge thriller from the director of the HUGELY successful Spider-Man movies and starring a pre-stardom Liam Neeson (and Frances McDormand). This kind of pedigree should sell itself. And yet the Blu-Ray doesn't even have a lousy TRAILER.
-
How does Bee Girls look? The version I have on DVD looks like shit and would be willing to buy it again if it was a nice somewhat clean looking copy.
-
Can't those things hold a shit ton of stuff? What's the point, if you've already got a film on DVD, of upgrading to Blu? I was hoping studios had finished with their crap first run releases on the new format tricks. Bastards.
-
To quote one Bill Hicks (speaking of the other Verhoeven/Estzerhas turdfest): "You're way off base. You've forgotten how to perceive correctly. Take a deep breath. Watch it again. Hey, it's a piece of shit! That's all it ever was is a piece of shit." Basic Instinct and Showgirls were Skinemax level titilation and any and all subtext they may have been attempting to accomplish is completely and utterly overpowered by the awful acting and the doubly bad dialogue.
Robocop is awesome, Total Recall is zany fun and I enjoyed Hollow Man even though it was ridiculous. Hell, I can even tolerate Starship Troopers horrible acting because there's a larger point being made... but Showgirls is garbage. Showgirls is a fairy tale in the same way that Debbie Does Dallas is a coming-of-age story.
If I want bad acting and naked women, I'll stick to porn. At least then I get a money shot. -
Nah...The writing behind the character developments were spectacular. And the mythology behind the island, and how they built all that up, and only give you clues by the end was great.
Kinda like Donnie Darko, I suppose. Big WTF moment at the end that starts arguments among friends over exactly what the story was. The clues are there to figure out. -
but I respect how Verhoeven was willing to make a movie unashamedly for adults and in this increasingly politically correct watered down PG-13 Hollywood environment that's something you wont see today
-
While bare bones sucks, the point on Blu-ray is about audio/visual quality. It is to movies what DVD was compared to VHS, a big step up. Though I prefer whatever format to have extras. It's like the original Blu-ray release of Predator was bare bones except trailers, the upcoming re-release is going to be an ultimate edition. Anyway, I never saw Showgirls, the studio is sending me a copy to review over at Movie-Vault.com. Any advice? I saw that Elizabeth Berkley flopping scene somewhere once. WTH was the girl thinking???
-
down to THIRD and stick in FLASH GORDON and DARKMAN reviews after the fact just to appeal to a bunch of Whiny Geeks?Like anyone in here hasn't already seen those movies? Doesn't already own them? Isn't already going to buy them on Blu-Ray if they own a Blu- Ray player?Harry, that MYSTERY TRAIN review was one of the best and most heartfelt things you've ever written. Made me realize how close we are in age and how much we have in common. I saw it at the River Oaks theater in Houston after already digging Jarmusch via seeing DOWN BY LAW on Cable. I was in college at Lamar University at the time myself. Anyway, sometimes you need to tell these whiny Geeks to go fuck themselves, Harold. This is a Jim Jarmusch Criterion Collection Release, we're talking about. Respect must be Paid.
-
Darkman was aces. I even watched Darkman II and III just to see Arnold Vosloo playing a ' hero ' for once in his career.
-
"Take it, take the FUZZY elephant!""For PETE'S sake, let him breathe!"
-
are 99% crap. I almost never watch them anymore, because they are all the same. I do enjoy the occassional movie commentary, but only on movies that I really, really like. So in conclusion, I would be fine if there was never another special feature ever, and they dropped the prices on the blurays by a couple of dollars because of all the production savings
-
Just how many apocalypses does Malcolm McDowell survive? This, and Doomsday and Tank Girl and God knows how many Z-grade movies. He must be the go-to guy when you can't get Terence Stamp.
-
Because that sure seems like something that should have happened by now. I can't think of one, though.
-
Those who defend "Showgirls" claim that it's a satire (the same defense used for "Starshit Poopers") and thus is a brilliant masterpiece. The fact of the matter is this: For satire to work, it has to be CLEVER. "Showgirls" is mind-numbingly stupid on all levels (not unilke the aforementioned "Starshit") and is thus even WORSE than it would be if you took it seriously. Ed Wood has lost the throne; it belongs entirely to Paul Verhoeven.
-
jawaburger is right, if the studio gave the option of buying the superdeluxe special treatment or the bare bones edition of any film, at the same time, on its initial video release, well there'd be less to bitch about.
The constant re-issues of films is insulting. Do it right the first time, bitches! -
Zatoichi is not a samurai, he yakuza. There are samurai in the films but Zatoichi is low born and could never be one. I also loved Book of Eli up until the very end. I just hope they do not do a follow up where Kunis attempts to be a bad ass.
