Wanna Go Flying With James Horner?

Published at:  Jun 10, 2010 7:00:34 PM CDT

Greetings! ScoreKeeper here slipping the surly bonds of earth on laughter-silvered wings to deliver this amazing new video featuring James Horner, his music, and his fervent enthusiasm for flying.

This particular video hit home for me. For the entirity of my childhood, up until I entered college, I had always wanted to follow in my father's footsteps and become a pilot in the U.S. Navy. When it became apparent that this wouldn't happen, I settled for my second passion...film music. As much as film music encompasses me, my childlike fascination and borderline obsession for airplanes remain true to this day.

Who knew Mr. Horner nurtured a similar fanaticism for flying by climbing into the cockpit of a P-51 Mustang to soar through the footless halls of air up the long delirious burning blue? This video not only demonstrates his passion for vintage aircraft and his experiences riding in them, but also how a single artist can translate other life passions into expressive works of brilliance.

All this clap-trap leads up to the real reason I'm bringing this into the spotlight...the music that Horner has composed to commemorate these experiences is really quite spectacular! Horner fans should definitely check this out. There is even a link on the actual web site where you can sign up to receive word when the full video and recording of the work is available to the public. I signed up.

This behind-the-scenes look into its creation is a teaser to what appears to be a classic-in-waiting. Bravo!

James...Next time you travel sunward to touch the face of God. Tell him I said "hi."

Special thanks to John G. Magee, Jr. for his inspirational poem which I humbly pay homage in this piece.

I read 'James Horner' I think it's 'Craig Horner' and wonder why we're talking about the guy from Legend Of The Seeker. Shows what I know :P

Its probably better if I DON'T fly with James Horner

Invariably, I'll end up demanding that he either stop using that exhausted 5 note trumpet thingy or I'll push him into the big blue...

    by drath

No offense to any of the other composers, but he did conduct the music to the most operatic moment films in Trek, and I miss that.

    by moondoggy2u

But Jerry Goldsmith's Trek score was on a whole different plain. For me, his main Star Trek theme IS Star Trek.

Wow, that music was pretty awesome

    by ttringle

I could not help but imagine that music being used in an epic WW2 movie done with modern CGI. It's one of the few genres that hasn't been exploited properly (bruckheimer I'm looking at you...) since the advent of photo realistic CGI in the past 7 years or so. God I love almost all of the Horner soundtracks and that just made me weep that his Avatar score was so phoned in seemingly. I would really love to see a director just let him loose on a great movie. It usually means the difference.

His Work on Star Trek II is His Best

    by writefromleft

Knocked it out of the park. His score for Star Trek III came out recently on Film Score Monthly and is worth checking out. Not as good as Khan, but the expanded FSM CD is very good and contains music not heard on the original release. Scorekeeper is having a contest for the Star Trek III score soon, if memory serves.

Too bad Avatar's score was complete rubbish

    by fred asparagus

A far cry from the masterpiece Horner promised in his self-promotional videos prior to Avatar's release. I really liked when he reused bits of Willow, like when the big tree was being demolished. That was some professional-grade recycling, that was.

    by gotilk

Enjoyed the hell out of it, but the plane was so old and rickety I just could not bring myself to spend the time and money to continue with it while thinking the whole time *I* will be the lucky one to fall to his death before he even gets a solo flight. I love flying, but I'll stick to being a really enthusiastic, supportive and appreciative passenger. And I really want to see/hear the completed work.

    Some Horner favorites....

    by geodesigns

Star Trek II – main “Naval fleet” sounding theme was majestic, final battle was awesome, Kahn’s creepy themes and motifs gave me the chills- Spock’s theme was ethereal and introspective-- all excellent

Aliens- Aliens’ attack theme is a self rip-off from the Klingon theme in Star Trek III but I don’t care- I really like it. And the final battle airlock purge music crescendo was so great it appeared in every other major movie trailer in the late 80’s. Hollywood oversaturated the crescendo to death but it was just that good. Love the militaristic music against the creepy aggressive music representing the Xenomorphs

Rocketeer – classic underrated film. Horner’s music was a great match.

Avatar- Yes it had some self rip off snippets like the 5 note trumpet but again, I don’t care if he ripped himself off. I liked the final song with the choir in the soundtrack.

    Best score

    by kaitain

Okay, it IS Wrath of Khan, but Battle Beyond the Stars comes close...

I do love Horner's scores, even if he's only done five of them and then repeated them ad infinitum.

"Jerry Goldsmith's Trek score was on a whole different plain. For me, his main Star Trek theme IS Star Trek."

I've heard a lot of people say that. Not for me. The Khan score is the score I most strongly associate with the movies. Maybe that's because Goldsmith's score is now associated more with TNG, or because The Motion Picture feels like an oddity that's almost unconnected with the rest of the movies. (It feels like there's the original series, then The Motion Picture, then the series of movies that begins with Wrath of Khan.)

Jerry Goldsmith never scored a "great" Trek movie though

    by drath

Sorry, even First Contact fell far short of what I wanted from TNG movies--Best of Both Worlds was a better movie and it was on TV. Sure the scores were always reliable, but simply not good Trek movies. I do love all the original Trek movies, even TMP and TFF were noteworthy and I loved them for what they were. But 2, 3, 4, and 6 are true space opera greatness, and Horner scored half of it--arguably the greater half. Also, Goldsmith has entered mortality, so of the two of them Horner is the one who could come back for more. All due respect to Michael Giacchino, but his new Trek score never ONCE felt like Trek. It's very good, epic even, but not Trek. And I kind of feel JJ's Trek was made for people who don't like Trek, so who the fuck needs them? I am very sure the next one will be "not as good as the first" just like Ironman 2, and not "holy awesome, maybe even than the first" like Wrath of Kahn (and Aliens, and X2, and so on).
