LORD OF THE RINGS... Wanna see a Hobbit Hole'
Hey folks... Harry here. Seems that them Brits have been sneaky as hell and managed to snap off this shot of a hobbit hole. Now I don't know if this is Bilbo/Frodo's home, or just another anonymous hobbit's hovel, but I guess we will see in time. Personally I think they nailed it... It seems the British press have decided to adopt this project as one of their sneak attacks... I can't imagine people in Britain being interested in this film... heh... just kidding... Well... Let's just hope they nail their facts better than their picture next time... The cast has been announced for quite some time now... no need to perpetuate long denied myths...

Harry,
I found this in a local UK newspaper, its supposed to be Frodos house and was taken in secret in New Zealand.
The article also stated that Sean Bean & Timothy Spall had been cast, is this true ?
HARRY NOTE: Sean Bean has been cast, but Timothy Spall has not!!! Sean is Boromir, I believe
As I hadn't heard this casting, if so does any
body know what roles they're playing ? I can't wait to see Sean Bean hacking things up with a sword again.

Greenleaf *** You are quite correct that Tolkien used some Norse words -- primarily personal names and place names, as well as some from other languages. What is meant by Finnish being used as the base for Quenya (and Welsh for Sindarin) is that is how the languages were structured, both grammatically and philologically. And keep in mind that many of the names that Tolkien borrowed from Old Norse, etc. were used for "Mannish" words -- ie: Westron. Gandalf (Elf of the Staff)for example is "Mannish" not "Eldarin." His Elvish name was Mithrandir (Grey Pilgrim). So, while JRRT used a number of languages as sources for particular words, his Eldarin tongues were based on Finnish and Welsh -- both of which fascinated (Welsh from his childhood and Finnish during studies in his university days). Hope that info helps. Namarie.

What's up with that???

I think Tolkien used Welsh and Finnish for both Sindarin and Quenyan because he used many of the elements in the Welsh Triads(compare Balor of the evil eye and the lidless eye) and the Finnish epic Kalevala.Gondor isn't s'posed to be Minas Tirith itself,i'm just ponting out the real history tolkien based on.Assuming middle earth really existed, then Gondor must be another earlier culture .It is not surprising to find cultures that were replced by another culture in the same spot.I think the city of Troy has seven(number?) layer of rubble that spoke of seven preceding eras...

Tuatha te danaan was a Semitic race that returned after a flood and displaced the Firbolg on Ireland. If i'm not mistaken, they had earlier migrted to the isle of Crete(Numenor?) from an ealier group on ireland. They are extremely advanced in culture and dabbled in magic.....Doesn't that just smell of Numenorian?BTW,i'm 25 yrs old, first read was 16,the return of the king...

Dear Greanleaf, you are right when you say that Tolkien studied Old Norse and borrowed names from the Eddas like that of Gandalf and the dwarves. However, I think you'll find that most people here will agree that, as far as I can tell, Norse or any other Germanic language did not influence the develepmont of Quenya (if it did it was very, very, little and I don't remember reading about it). I'm not an expert but in all the reading I've done on the subject I've only seen Finnish mentioned as the model for Quenya and, like Vanyar wrote, Welsh for Sindarin. This doesn't mean Tolkien wasn't influenced by Nordic languages at all, just that those influences were on Mannish names and languages rather than Elvish ones. For example, in the books English represents Westron, the common tongue. Tolkien then had to represent the relationship Westron has to other Mannish tongues with relationships English has to other European languages, thus: Westron to Rohirric (sp?) as Modern English to Anglo-Saxon; Westron to the language of the Bardings/Men of Dale as English to the Scandinavian tongues; etc. Since the Rohirrim language was related to Westron but more archaic, it is represented by Old English/Anglo-Saxon, which has a similar relationship to Modern English. I don't know how else to demonstrate Nordic non-influence on Quenya. Anyone else wanna give it a try?...Wait a minute, I just spotted Vanyar's latest post...and it's at the top!!!?*#%$?@??
He alsor writes basically the same thing I just wrote...Hmm, whatever. -
For what it's worth I'm male, 25 y.o, single (this is getting to be like the personals). I first read Tolkiens work in the 5th or 6th grade with The Hobbit. I found LOTR much harder getting through, probably had something to do with my age, but now I adore it. Funny thing is, like many people Fellowship was slow going at first, but now its my favorite volume, over Two Towers and Return of the King. The Hobbit, though, is still my favorite Tolkien book, and Bilbo remains my favorite hobbit. In fact, when I read it I became convinced that I was a hobbit myself because I was the shortest guy in my class, loved to eat, and have curly hair (obvious hobbit traits).I still go around barefoot. This brings me to one question: are they going to give Elijah Wood and the others a perm?
