Watch Chris & That Little Midget Girl Starring in THOR!!! ET did ok with this report!

Published at:  Jun 10, 2010 2:18:05 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... and this is actually something pretty damn cool from Entertainment Tonight - a video look at behind the scenes of THOR. Just kind of seeing Anthony Hopkins as Odin with the Eyepatch... just tickles me just right. I also liked seeing Chris in the THOR costume moving, looks way better than the stills. I have to say - I'm hopeful. Very curious about the Thor in T-shirt scenes. But the glimpses of the Asgard sets are awesome. You'll see, click below...

    Remember when AICN was "first"?

    by emperor_was_a_jerk

Wow. This just puts the nail in the coffin for AICN and sites like it. I mean Superhero movies (and Sci Fi movies in general) have REALLy gone mainstream and there is no way in hell AICN will ever be first with any news, photos, scoops or interviews with the really big movies anymore. On one hand, it's kind of sad because it used to be fun to come here and see top secret stuff or learn about geek movies first, but on the other hand now that shows like Entertainment Tonight and magazines like Entertainment Weekly get all the real news it means that these movies will likely make moneh- which means more of them will be made. That's... good... right?

it's just a group of guys who write about films mostly after they come out the only thing they get that no one else does now is first showings of the films. those set visits and interview that the well the other sites get those too so it's no longer a wow thing to do for this site anymore. latino review has been pumping out the stories hours and days before aicn for a long time now. I said this would happen. someone would say nice with the studios say the lest agressive stuff and they would get better scoops, that aicn would have to borrow as news, since aicn lost first dibs. the begining of the end it seems. A walmart super movie review site with insiders giving them the goods is all the coffin will need.

    The Timeliness Of AICN Stories

    by the true pinback

While it IS true that AICN seems to be losing out on the scoops, I don't watch Entertainment Tonight, so this was all new to me. I do wish that things here would go back to the way they were, with more spoilers and stuff from in-production films. We always get a lot of "they are now developing this", or, "so-and-so is writing this," but I have learned to take this shit with a grain of salt.
I don't belive ANYTHING I read here, or on any other movie geek site for that matter, until I see actual stills from the set. And we ain't gettin' much of that here these days. I guess the filmmakers have gotten wise to you, and your commando tactics no longer work. Or maybe it's that you're just playing nice with the studio boys these days. Whatever the reason, you guys are getting scooped left and right by other sites, and I find it sad. Is AICN on the decline...I guess each reader will have to decide that for themselves, but I do know this. AICN is not the only site I go to daily for film news anymore...but I still prefer it to the others. Say what you will, but I still have a certain sense of home on here that I don't get on other sites. I guess I'm just getting sentimental in my old age. Get the fire back boys...do it and do it quick.

I'm kind of hoping the awkwardness is just from the interview process. I had to do a video interview for a project at work, and I was amazed at how awkward and horrible I was. As a result, I give everyone being interviewed a huge pass on their performance. There's a reason both the hosts and the interviewees know what questions are going to be asked and what kind of answers are going to be given through pre-interviews for late-night talk shows. Until you've given the same answers over and over, it's hard to do the kind of casual bullshit interview they do here.

It just seemed like Portman and Hemsworth were goofing off in a low-key interview. Sure, it was bubbly, it was for E. That and, as everybody else seemed to pick up on, Portman seemed to either have a crush on Hemsworth or was just kind of flirting and being, well, a cute girl. They didn't ask her about solutions to the BP oil spill in the Gulf or anything, so I'm fine with them goofing off and seemingly flirting in a laid back movie interview. The footage, what little there was, looked fine to me, and Hemsworth looked the part from what little they showed.-Cheers

    by dave i

First, your check's in the mail. (j/k).Second, seriously:"Do you all realize how awesome it is going to be see all this on film?????"Totally! I mean, remember as a kid seeing some comic book character, or even artwork, or crappy cartoon with low production values, and hoping someday to see that on the big screen? Well, as a young kid, hoping to see it for real and have Spidey swing into your window and like hang out for a bit. But a pretty plausible big-screen adaptation of your favorite characters? For real?!!!!! That was a dream. I think that's why I both get excited about these movies, and get kind of bummed when they aren't given the best efforts. But overall I try to be positive because, honestly, when most of us 30+ folk were kids, something like costumed super heroes being given a serious treatment in TV, film, or even comics the way some are in this day & age. That was about as likely as finding a leprechaun in your backyard and swiping his pot of gold.I'll step off my platform here, but I'm pretty happy we're getting a chance to see ANY version of these characters treated with some level of respect. Even when they're not for me and I gripe, I'm still happy to see them given a chance for all of the fans of said characters and for the chance to see if they're presented in a light that makes me see how & why they're cool to people.-Cheers

I'll give it a chance, though. I just hope it's good. It doesn't have to be *great*, just good. I'm ambivalent about Captain America, but Thor is an all time fave for me. I thought they did right by Iron Man, another fave, but I haven't seen part 2 yet. I dunno, it just looks whatever to me. I'll see it on dvd.

Exactly, when treated right or at least the source is paid respect like Marvel Studios is doing with these projects, its just unbelievable. I'll bitch and complain all day when its not (i.e. X-Men)....But for some to say this will suck or Cap, well they're just little trolls trying to get a rise out of us. But they know they're excited, and will go see it no matter what. A PERIOD WW2 CAP MOVIE???? I better not die before then!

I'd rather Thor didn't even come to Earth and they were never angling for an Avengers movie. I'd WAY rather see some insane, psychedelic, retro Thor with colorful cosmic supergod battles and sexy laydays have Huge Metal Ballads that determine the fate of any number of realities set entirely in Asgard and elsewhere. Fuckin' get Beta Ray Bill in there too. Just go nuts. Maybe through some splattersatire in there too. Verhoven-Jodorowsky-DinoDeLaurenthis-Lynch inspirationals.

It's crazy they're even making this film.

    by kevred

And I say that as someone who adores the comic, really likes and has confidence in Branaugh, and likes most all the casting in the film. It's just one of those "how can they possibly pull it off?" things. How can they make a cosmic-myth film in this cynical, ironic age that won't either be ridiculous or insult the source material with too many "we're not taking it too seriously" winks?Answer: I have no idea. And that's what makes me respect this crazy idea. Branaugh's past work shows that he can be both deadly serious and funny in a way that doesn't cheapen the source. It's a hell of a tough task, because while Iron Man had the constant loophole of RDJ's wry jerkiness, they can't strike such a tone here. And they also don't want suffocating Star-Wars-prequels stuffiness.Seeing how they pull this off is one of the big reasons I'm anticipating this. The guts needed to even try this are immense.

    by redbull_werewolf

the only "footage" we saw was shot with ET's standard cameras in natural lighting, Branagh is a director that puts alot of effort into cinimetography, even that scne of them running outside will look a dozen times better when it's filtered and croped to 2.35:1

Harry's reviews: 5 paragraphs of tangential nostalgia he will then futilely attempt ("and this movie is just like that feeling of climbing the rope in gym class!") to connect to the actual review.

2 paragraphs of character and actor shout-outs all rattled off one by one without any sort of context that make no sense to anyone that has not seen the movie. (And, yes, this is the "review" for what it's worth.)

Two final brief paragraphs devoted to what he is planning on seeing next/whatever else is on his mind at the moment.

    End.

I Don't Like The Silver Arm Wrap

    by media messiah

I can see why they casted him now--thanks to this interview, and his look with the beard is awesome, however, they haven't quite cracked the costume yet? Hopefully, they will give him his silver crown with wings, and get rid of the silver sleeves on his arms. The bare-arm look for Thor...is best. Other than that, this looks spot on!!! Note: It would be funny if he gets into it with a biker gang, as he looks like a Hell's Angel. I would find it very comedic to see him put a gang leader and his men on their asses in a fight. Next, we cut to Thor riding a chopper, cool and calm, and then the camera pulls back to reveal that he is at the head of a long-line of bikers that are following him on the freeway, with Natalie behind him on the back of his bike, gripping his waist. The gang, giving him the full respect as their new leader. Suddenly, we hear "Born To Be Wild" playing. Again, Thor does look like a biker, does he not???!!! Could be a cool sight-gag for the film????!!!!

Thor is in street clothes because...

    by billy_boomstick

... in the movie he is banished to Earth and Mjolnir is cast down as well but Thor is separated from it rendering him powerless. Remember at the end of Iron Man 2 when Coulson finds Mjolnir in the desert? Well if you notice in the ET behind the scenes footage Thor/Chris is climbing down some stairs and kicks a couple military guys out of the way... take a closer look at that shot... it looks like a make shift base with tents just like in the first X-Files movie. My guess is that the military/S.H.I.E.L.D. has set up a base around the hammer (since it cannot be moved by anyone except Thor) and Thor is fighting his way to Mjolnir to reclaim his power and kick Loki's ass (also notice the flashes of lightning in the scene coming from the staircase Chris is descending indicating this scene is possibly from the film's climax).

    Portman

    by mr. murdoch

Jeez...way to be obvious. Does the "little midget girl" have a crush on him or what? Two possibilities: 1) either the chemistry between them on/off screen really IS that awkward, or 2) Portman's already had a bit of "Mjolnir"...and likes it.

    I don't think they're using Donald Blake

    by gateott

Thor's secret identity in the early comics was Donald Blake, but it wasn't a secret identity in the conventional sense, he was a seperate person whose body Thor had been trapped in by Odin as a punishment. He could only let Thor out by tapping his cane on the ground, causing it to turn into Mjolnir and allowing Thor to take control. Judging by how physically fit T-shirt Thor is in those scenes, I'm guessing this is based on the version of Thor in Walter Simonson's run, in which Odin eliminated the Donald Blake personality and Thor's new secret identity simply consisted of putting on glasses and calling himself "Sigurd Jarlson".

Kenneth Branagh really hasn't directed anything really great... or really good for that matter. Sleuth was mediocre... all his Shakespeare adaptations have been meh (Franco Zeffirelli's Hamlet blew Branagh's version out of the water)...Henry V had a great score... that's about it. Don't get me started on his version of Frankenstein.

I think they built the bunker around the crater where the hammer is resting, because no one could lift it. Scientists are probably studying it to figure out why it can't be moved. Thor finds its location, slides down that ladder, taking out some SHIELD dudes.. grabs the hammer and WHAM.. Thor the God is back. I hope they save Hulk vs Thor for the Avengers.

Something sorely lacking in other superhero movie directors. I mean, come on... Ang Lee? Richard Donner? Puh-lease! Okay, maybe they aren't the best examples. Anyway, Thor is an incredibly difficult property to film. Like Green Lantern, the cosmic nature of the characters have to be handled adroitly in order not to be completely ridiculous.

    I loved Branaugh's Hamlet

    by bass ackwards

I thought Franco Zeffirelli's was a hopeless misfire. Branaugh made some poor casting choices, but I thought it was a lush, beautiful film directed with loads of energy. I don't think we've seen him as ambitious or energetic with his direction since, but his projects have been scarce since then as well, so no telling what he'll bring to Thor, but he is the only reason I have any interst in this project.

    Branagh's films are brilliant

    by sgt.steiner

Have you seen "Peter and His Friends"? You know, the British "Big Chill", with Kenneth Branagh, Emma Thompson, Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, and Imelda Staunton? Heartbreaking, funny. Even something as frothy as "Much Ado About Nothing". A delight. And "Mary Shelley's Frankenstein" is the most faithful version of the book-hands down. And any additions to the text enhance the story. Robert De Niro gives a scary, and, at times, touching perfomance. Not that it surprised anyone who had seen "Awakenings" or "Bang The Drum Slowly". It deserves to wear the author's name, unlike, say, "Bram Stoker's Dracula", a pic that, despite some lovely visuals, a knockout performance from Gary Oldman, and Monica Belluci's lovely buxoms, is a faithless whore of a film. Dracula was never an anti-hero, a romantic figure, Van Helsing was not a crazy old man(just eccentric), and Jonathan Harker was always the hero who got the girl. You know, his wife? "Thor" will be excellent, as Branagh rewrites the great myths. He was the best thing about "Valkyrie", and he's Gilderoy Lockhart, motherfucker, so you show him some respect!

    Casting...

    by zounds

Some have mentioned Vladmir Kulich as Thor. Agreed, there isn't an actor who has surpassed his look as Thor. I think stature-wise, he's taller than both Skarsgaard and Hemsworth(Though CH seems to have bulked up considerably.) But for present consideration, I just can't for the life me, see how Marvel could pass up on a Scandanavian Father/Son duo, 6'3" and 6'4", for Odin and Thor.

And for my money, James Purefoy would have been equally appropriate for Loki.

But I am a little more encouraged having seen some of the set shots, and lighting possibilities. Just a little though.

Hemsworth bulked up very well, and honestly I thought that Heimdalls Chamber looked fucking excellent. Good lighting and set design.

I also think that that is some SHIELD bunker over the hammer that he is invading.

The film will play out like this...

firtst 1/3 will take place on Asgard and other realms

the middl will be about THOR on earth trying to fit in and prove he is a God.
Finale will be him retreiving his hammer and proving he is a god by fighting Loki to save earth and Asgard.

    I can live with that.
