TV Dramedy Vets Berlanti, Green and Guggenheim To Pen GREEN LANTERN 2 Treatment!!

Published at:  Jun 10, 2010 12:21:40 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

Three writers hired to write drafts of DC Comics movies “Green Lantern” and “The Flash” have now been hired to write a treatment for “Green Lantern 2,” according to The Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision blog.

These three writers are longtime collaborators, all with extensive experience writing dramedies on The WB and ABC. They are:

* Greg Berlanti (“Dawson’s Creek,” “Jack & Bobby,” “Everwood,” “Dirty Sexy Money,” “Eli Stone,” “Brothers & Sisters”);

* Marc Guggenheim (“Jack & Bobby,” “Brothers & Sisters,” “Eli Stone,” “FlashForward’); and

* Michael Green (“Jack & Bobby,” “Everwood,” “Heroes,” “Kings”).

Warner Bros. long ago announced Berlanti would direct the first “Green Lantern” movie from a screenplay by Berlanti, Guggenheim and Green -- but Berlanti (whose only prior directorial experience was the little-seen 2000 man-on-man romantic comedy “Broken Hearts Club”) was replaced as director by Martin Campbell (“Casino Royale”), who ordered Michael Goldenberg (“Contact,” “Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix”) to rewrite the GL1 script.

IESB reported some time ago that Berlanti was a front-runner to direct "The Flash," but Heat Vision makes no mention of Berlanti's involvement as director.

I could come up with a long list of TV writers in whom I’d have a lot more confidence than Berlanti, Guggenheim and Green – all men whose work I’m well familiar with – but maybe this trio is particularly affordable in this harsh economic climate?

Find all of Heat Vision’s story on the matter here.

Preparing a sequel before the first film is even released? I know superhero films are doing well but Green Lantern is a bit different from the current norm and it might be a tougher sell. Maybe that volatility is the reason they went with a cheaper b-team of writers.

WTF??? Kim Kardashian is the new LARA CROFT?

    by starship captain

Have you seen this story going around? Maybe it's just a well-planted story by a publicist, but (supposedly) Kim Kardashian is in final talks to be the new Lara Croft for the next TOMB RAIDER movie. Which according to the stories I read online they want to make in 3D and more "cartoony" in tone than the previous films.Riiiight. Because whenever I think of TOMB RAIDER as a video game or as an action movie property, it always strikes me that the one thing that's been wrong in the mix is that it hasn't been "cartoony" enough. Idiots. On the plus side, maybe part of the deal calls for Lara to be ass-fucked onscreen, which is something Kim's video "audition tape" with Ray J. proved she has a distinct talent for...

Does Berlanti have naked pics of Warner execs?

    by starship captain

What the hell? Berlanti writes a Green Lantern script and hopes to direct it...but then Warners actually gets a great A-level action director (Martin Campbell) to shepherd the project instead. So he comes on board and sniffs Berlanti's script...at which point he immediately orders a massive rewrite because he wasn't happy with what Berlanti did.So with all of that taking place, Warner Bros then hires the same guy to write the 2nd movie? Before the first one even comes out?? What, does Berlanti have pics of naked execs to get the job all over again?Seems to me that if the first GL movie comes out and it's a hit, it will owe more to Campbell and Goldenberg and the work THEY did. So shouldn't Warner's be trying to secure them instead?

My idea for a Flash movie...

    by vadakinx

So I'm an aspiring screen writer (aren't we all) and in my spare time (which I have a lot of...being and aspiring writer and not a working one) I like to come up with ideas for some of the big comic book adaptations, especially ones linked to DC Comics.

So I have a Superman story that i think could be pretty cool and it would be my dream job (along with Star Wars) and I have ideas for Wonder Woman and Green Lantern too. But since GL is already being made, I thought I'd share my thoughts on a Flash movie, thus disqualifying this story from ever being made ...oops.

My Flash movie starts out 25 years ago. Barry Allen is the Flash. He's been the Flash for about 20 years before this. He knows that some day he's going to have to retire so he's been working on recreating the accident that gave him his powers. Of course something goes wrong and his nephew, Wally West, gets caught up in it. Barry decides to train Wally to use his powers but forbids him from using them in public, not wanting his nephew as a crime fighter.

25 years later, Barry Allen is an old man. He's still quick but obviously slowing down. Wally meanwhile is in his senior year at college, with a major in forensic science. While Barry has gotten slower, Wally has become faster. He's a smart ass, full of himself and not opposed to using his speed to give him advantages over others.

But when 3 of the Flash's old enemies team up to take down the Flash once and for all, Barry proves to be no match for their combined strength (what villains? Definitely the Weather Wizard...maybe Mirror Master...not sure about the third but it wouldn't be Grodd...sequel baby) and they capture him.

With The Flash suddenly out of action, Wally West must take up the search for his uncle while protecting Central City. He takes on the mantle of The Flash and speeds into action.

And that's essentially the idea. It's a kind of passing of the torch story that pays homage to Barry Allen's Flash and introduces the West Flash. I'd also reference Garrick in there, maybe even as the very first Flash.

Some good work on those resumes

    by vikkimarsdale

I enjoyed Eli Stone and Dirty Sexy Money and FlashForward (the pilot and everything after the hiatus) and Heroes (parts of season one, most of season four).

I'm not sure any of what I liked about that work really translates into what I'd expect or want to see in a Green Lantern movie.

But then maybe they'll come up with something unexpected - a new approach to a super-hero movie that isn't "recap the origin introduce the supporting characters, fight the arch enemy".

And if the debut installment of the franchise is featuring Sinestro, I guess we're stuck with that old "Hero fights evil version of himself or villain with approximately the same powers".

Though that's always the first movie, so I guess a numbered sequel out to come up with something different.

And by something different I mean ANYTHNG BUT HAVING THE HERO FIGHT TWO OR THREE OF HIS B-LIST ENEMIES AT ONCE.

To digress a moment, does anyone else really hate the living fuck out of numbered sequels and or "name of the character number colon title" titles?

Can't they just make a movie and call it Emerald Dawn or Darkest Night and let the damn public figure out who's in it?

I mean it, did we have to put up with crap titles like "James Bond 3: Goldfinger" or "Luke Skywalker 2: The Empire Strikes Back"? No, he answered his own rhetorical question emphatically.

WB are obviously happy with Campbell's GL (bad news for anyone who wanted it exactly like the comic, good news for those who wanted it "TDK'ed") so yes they are doing it again. They got the three (cheap) guys who almost ruined it the first time to do the treatment not the script the treatment and then hand it to Campbell's team who will actually make something good out of it.

    FLASH

    by the brains

I really thought Flash was further along and that the script was ready and Berlanti was going to be announced as director. Johns and Mazeau were quoted as working on the Flash script and happy with its progress. In an interview with Collider Berlanti talks about how he was looking to develop a superhero movie when he first came to Hollywood. He developed GL and looks like they're going to let him make the Flash.

    by the brains

If they develop Flash with the introductions of Barry, Iris and her nephew Wally, then the Flash series can develop as being about that whole family. They would have to get the tone right if they introduce a Gorilla City, meteor and alien etc.

Love DC infinite ways more than marvel. I really think GL will turn out great and Flash could be DC's answer to Spider-man. You know, a feel good hero with a power set that hasn't been done before on screen. I think if they really take care about flash, they could make a huge franchise out of it. Even kickstart a Teen titans movie out of this.

    Not Sure About their Resume's

    by dave i

Most of those shows I didn't see, although Eli Stone seemed to have an interesting premise. Kings was supposed to be good. Heroes . . . Totally depends on which episodes. I mean, if Michael Green was on some of the Bryan Fuller quality type of episodes, then sure.FlashForward though . . . Man, that REALLY depends. I mean, the pilot was cool, it dragged after that with a few nice episodes, then after the hiatus it was mostly great. However (largely, I'm sure you could argue, due to them trying to force-fit things into the blackout events and knowing it was possibly their series wrap-up) I found the finale pretty much unconvincing and awful (although Joseph Fiennes stopped scowling as much, which was a good thing). This is kind of strange though if Berlanti was more or less fired after turning in a script that Campbell and Goldenberg ended up shepherding and fixing. I mean, if Green Lantern TOTALLY flops or something, you'd imagine GL2 wouldn't get made OR they might want to go a different direction, and if it's a roaring success, why not have Campbell and Goldenberg work on it since they will be the ones who made it great?-Cheers

I think Berlanti developed GL- he got the ball rolling on that. WB were lucky that they had that to develop after all the trouble they had making something beyond Batman and the announcement of DC Entertainment. He was going to direct it, but because of his inexperience they handed the project over to Martin Campbell and his team to develop it further. But WB were happy with what Berlanti did. Berlanti started the GL work and stayed on as one of the producers. But maybe because Flash isn't a space epic, WB feel more comfortable giving him Flash. And they obviously still want him to help develop GL 2, since he looks to have knowledge with that. Johns does look to be developing the bigger picture for the DCU onscreen.

    by dave i

On the one-hand, why not cut out the middle man and give it back to Campbell and Goldenberg if they ended up being the ones to direct? I mean, you take out another chef from the kitchen, so to speak, and maintain more consistency as far as who actually primarily makes the movies (and avoid rewrites or whatever that seem inevitable when somebody works on a project and then hand it off to somebody else with a different vision). On the other hand, if they really like Berlanti and what he did, plus feel he's more able to do the whole thing on its own, who am I to judge? I suppose all I really care about at the end of the day is the finished product. As for Flash vs. Green Lantern, yeah, GL seems like it would be a harder sell, or at least easier to screw up. The Flash, to me, seems more about getting the character right, where as Green Lantern you have the feel of the space epic and balancing HUGE cosmic battles or at least ultra-powerful aliens with power rings and stuff, plus making sure you get people to buy into the character. I still hope they do a great job with the Flash though (preferably with Wally, but I'm guessing they're going with Barry Allen?). I thought they made him fun but still added some depth in the Justice League series.-Cheers

I think it's because Berlanti has the comic book knowledge whereas Goldenberg polished the script with Campbell, who is more the big budget action director rather than a comic book afficianado. I think they're going with Barry Allen, so they can build up the mythos, since it will involve a lot of that family (children, spouses etc.)

I grew up loving GL, but IMO it started going downhill when they re-invented Guy Gardner as an asshole and then later made it about, amongst other things, a talking chipmunk.

They then completely fucked Hal up the ass, and I walked away disgusted. I finally did give some of the Johns stuff a look, and was pleasantly surprised.

Still, as much as I loved GL as a concept/character, it's really hard to imagine this doing well at the box office. You can't do a Nolan-type approach, and it's hard to see an Iron Man-ish approach working, so it's either going to just suck in general or be some pretentious, super-serious SF attempt. I do not hold out hope.

Adelai, All Joking Aside, Good Point . . .

    by dave i

While it's fun to joke about who's making GL IV or Flash: III or who's writing the GL reboot prequel, there is a certain amount of wisdom to this. I think they are clearly seeing what Marvel is doing and trying to create a long-term plan and arc things so that the characters of the Marvel universe meet up either in an actual Justice League movie, or some sort of cross-over event(s). So while it DOES seem a bit premature, given that they are probably going to try and have these movies come out in regular intervals and almost have to eventually have some bit cross-over (likely Justice League) movies, this does make pretty good sense to play things out way in advance.-Cheers

Makes sense. And obviously they know if Berlanti has the goods more than I do.As for Barry Allen . . . Yeah, I can see why they'd do that for a few reasons. I just kind of like Wally better. Still, I can always watch old JL cartoons or pick up Wally-centric comics. I'd MUCH rather they start with Barry and plan for continuity with Wally down the road than to start off with Wally and then down the road go "Heeeeeeeeey, we could prequel/reboot with Barry!" Maybe it's just me, but the reboot, wiping away continuity (*cough* *OneMoreDay* *cough* *Mephisto* *cough*). Sorry, I hold a grudge over that crap. He is very involved with GL, consulting with the cast, crew and writers, and he does overlook/consult with all the DC movies. I don't know how involved he is with Batman and Superman, I think he has more freedom with GL and Flash to start building that shared universe. I think they're leaving Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman (if they do make that) alone in terms of that for now.

As for Berlanti and co. he created the new series "No Ordinary Family" the superhero family with Michael Chiklis and that has been picked up.

The Headline doesn't even mention The Flash

    by donduck

I still don't get it when the original Hollywood Reporter was about BOTH Green Lantern 2 and a new treatment for The Flash. Not just Green Lantern 2. It's an ill-informed article and it bugs me.

He Can Run So Fast That He Can Time Travel

And vibrate so quickly that bullets pass right through him. Flash and the whole Speed Force thing is actually alot cooler than it may appear on the surface. Again, I just hope they enlist Johns to oversee; which it appears he is doing with GL.

    LaserPants, I TOTALLY Agree

    by dave i

Flash is one of those characters that seems one-bit until you actually see what they come up with. Then things open up and he becomes A LOT more interesting. It's to the point where, if you think about it, he'd be more or less effectively invincible without some gimmick if he wanted to be and if writers presented him that way. Ice Man is similar in that regard; sure, he shoots ice. But at its upper limits, you could do a whole lot with him. You rarely see that though.-Cheers

This is the same kind of thinking...

That sunk Superman. Try hiring some men to bring your heroes to life. Dramedy writers? Really?

    2 Things That'll Make GL2

    by one_n_done

Have it focus on the Sinestro Corps and make Michael Jai White as John Stewart.

    Guggenheim has comic cred, Herc

You seem to know a thing or two about a thing or two about funnybooks, I'm surprised you wouldn't mention that.

And I honestly wish Reynolds would get down to Deadpool

    by tall_boy66

He did say "There's no rule you can't play two different superheroes" and I'm interested in Green Lantern (but the only Green Lantern book I've ever read is like, Rebirth and the GL/Aliens crossover) but Reynolds is tailor made for Wade Wilson. In all honesty, ditch this DC universe and get to some stream-of-consciousness killing sprees in Deadpool. Pronto. Those Zombieland guys are writing it, this sounds like it could totally rock.

    Campbell

    by mr. murdoch

Others have already noted it, but yeah: GREEN LANTERN is indeed a somewhat risky gambit. If the first film works, it will be because of three words: MARTIN FUCKING CAMPBELL. But he apparently doesn't like to do sequels, so he probably won't be interested in jumping right back into No. 2.
