LES GROSSMAN: THE MOTION PICTURE!! Tom Cruise To Star In TROPIC THUNDER Spin-Off??

I am – Hercules!! Paramount announced Wednesday it is developing a movie that would center on Les Grossman, Tom Cruise’s foul-mouthed movie producer character from "Tropic Thunder." The movie is being produced by Cruise and Ben Stiller, from a screenplay by Michael Bacall (“Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World’). Stiller issued this statement:
“Les Grossman’s life story is an inspiring tale of the human class struggle to achieve greatness against all odds. He has assured me he plans to quote ‘F**king kill the sh*t out of this movie and make Citizen f**king Kane look like a piece of crap home movie by the time we are done.’ I am honored to be working with him.”
I saw and enjoyed “Tropic Thunder” but retained little memory of the Grossman scenes. The character was featured prominently this Sunday on the MTV Movie Awards. With the possible exception of “Losin’ It,” has Cruise ever headlined a movie as broadly comic as “Tropic Thunder”? I also wonder if Jeremy Piven may have set the bar a little too high with his Ari Gold agent character on “Entourage.” Find all of Entertainment Weekly’s story on the matter here.

    Make It A Mockumentary

    by GLENNTROPOLIS

I think the Les Grossman story would only work in a Mockumentary type format whereas a straight up movie would kinda turn sour real quick. One of the things that we forget about these side characters that we fall in love with is that they are side characters. Les Grossman worked so well because everyone was wondering when they were going to see him next. We wont get that sameness in a full movie. Mockumentary is the way to go, maybe have him talk about how he saved Spinal Taps career.

They are going to pretend Grossman is a real producer?

    by BumLove

"Everything I learned I learned from Grossman." That type of shit is supposed to be funny? <p> It might turn out to be funny, but with ideas like those....it's not looking promising. However, with Cruise's clout, they could do a Hollywood mockumentary with all of Hollywood's biggest names in the actual movie, which might turn out to be something great. This thing could go either way.

    by DrakeSavageBalls

yeah... I can see why. It was a very subdued, low key performance by Cruise. <p> it wasn't like he was CHEWING UP THE SCENERY IN EVERY SCENE HE WAS IN. <P> on a different note, people keep telling me that this new movie, "Get Him to the Greek" was based on a character that Russell Brand played in "Forgetting Sarah Marshall", but I don't seem to recall him being in that film...<p>maybe I'll watch it again

like others have said, there's a reason side characters are side characters. now i think he'd work in another movie where he wasn't the focus. not necessarily a sequel to Thunder but just another movie within that universe. but i remember all the talk about him befoe seeing the movie and how "unrecognizable" he was. i was disappointed at how recognizable he actually was. i had this mental image of a shit load of makeup hiding him but no...you could tell it was him.

... now THERE's unfunny and gay, right there. How the fuck is he engaged to Katy Perry. Both because she's hot, and because she's in reality a christer busybody. Does she realize that this country's not a theocracy? That there isn't and never was a crime of "blasphemy" in the US Legal Code? Dumb teabagging bitch! Oh, and Russell Brand sucks in every definition of the word. And Tom Cruise is a nutjob, but he's been in some good films, he gets a pass. Gotta have those apple bottom jeans!

    by ChristmasCameLate

The comedy of Les Grossman has nothing to do with the fact that he says "fuck" so much...well, okay, that IS funny, but only because of his outlandish anger management and control issues with frequent transitions into another gear where he enigmatically dances to random hip-hop songs and doesn't think there's anything wrong with it while he coaxes people into doing his bidding...and then does it alone by himself later. His dialogue where he says "Speedman is a dying star, a white dwarf heading towards a black hole. That's physics. It's inevitable." I have to say, I really enjoyed how it and the rest of that whole scene's dialogue was delivered. The eerie music while he's going on and on and McConaughey is lookin' at him like he's from outer space, and then..."Gotta have them apple bottom jeans and the boots with the spurs! The whole club was lookin' at her! She hit the flo'! Next thang ya know! Shawdy got low, low, low, low..." Very random, very bizarre, very funny. I'll watch it.

Tom Cruise was possibly the best part of Tropic Thunder.

    by thedarklinglord

That said, I'm not sure I could stand a feature length movie with that character as the main focus. I fear it'd be like an SNL sketch that dragged on far too long, effectively killing whatever brilliant humor (and it's been a long time since there was any brilliant humor in SNL) was there to begin with. <br> <br> I think if Knight and Day does well, we'll almost certainly see Cruise in more comedic roles - batshit crazy as he may be, he's got a tremendous amount of onscreen charisma - but I'm just not sure he could make a Les Grossman film work.

Hmmm.... What is more far fetched? A alien being colonizing a new planet or the son of a super being who is able to walk across water and turn water into wine? To me both are so far fetched that you would need to be a complete nutter to follow any of them. At least with scientologists they need to have big brass balls to stand up in front of someone and spout their beliefs about aliens etc.

Why the fuck is everything so black and white here

    by MandrakeRoot

Apparently disliking Tropic Thunder automatically makes you a "hater spewing vitriol". Basically if you don't wanna be labeled a "hater" your required to like everything, no question asked. God forbid people have opinions around here. <p> I like Ben Stiller, and have enjoyed plenty of his movies. In fact, I liked most of the cast of TT. I was expecting a great comedy, and it turned out mediocre at best. Tom Cruise and Jack Black were painfully unfunny. I really truly wanted to love the movie, but let's face it, it was a pretty big disappointment.

  • June 10, 2010, 5:28 a.m. CST

    CGIh8r

    by MandrakeRoot

that's exactly why they laughed. And while yes, the idea of an actor like Tom Cruise playing a character like that is amusing, nothing he actually did or said was. It was simply Tom Cruise in a fat suit yelling and swearing in an over the top manner. If thats what people consider comic genius, then I feel really sorry for the future state of comedies. I mean, that's setting the bar pretty fucking low. But hey, the people are clearly asking for it. They can enjoy 90 minutes of painfully unfunny comedy when their Les Grossman movie comes out. Then again I suspect after 5 minutes of asinine shouting they'll realize how lame it actually is.

  • June 10, 2010, 5:56 a.m. CST

What is your idea of comedy Mandrake?

    Just wondering.....

  • June 10, 2010, 6:04 a.m. CST

And they are going to make the character sympathetic

    by AsimovLives

Because that's what you do when you take a charismatic but evil supporting character into the limelight and head his own movie: they have to make it sympathetic and redeamable because Hollywood think audiences can't take anything else, and thus, castrate what was interesting about the character in the first place. This movie will be piss.

    Many of you are making

    by Peter David

...an incorrect assumption: : That the film would be entirely about Grossman as he is in "Tropic Thunder." Two solid hours of bellicose raving. You're not seeing the possibilities.<p> It seems to me that the plan is to make this a comedic version of "Citizen Kane." Think about Kenneth the page on "30 Rock," who some characters have speculated is going to wind up running NBC. What if the film is basically tracking young Les when he was filled with Kenneth-like innocence and the film is about how Hollywood slowly transforms him into this foul-mouthed bully. And on the one hand you're rooting for him to succeed because his ascent means taking down people who are even more obnoxious than he. On the other hand, it's almost a tragedy, because you know what he's going to turn into. With the right script, the right cast and directors, it could be brilliant.<p> Or it could be ghastly. Dunno. But I'll definitely be there to see it.

  • June 10, 2010, 7:47 a.m. CST

Hollywood insider films have a bad track record

    by BumLove

Very few of them are any good, and most of them consist of a lot of nudge nudge wink winks to those in the industry, but have very little appeal to anyone else. I thought Dustin Hoffman was great in Wag the Dog, although even he was a bit too over the top. Then you have films like Jimmy Hollywood, Hollywood Homicide, Jiminy Glick, and the like which are complete shit. I actually started watching What Actually Happened? on instant netflix last night, starring Robert De Niro...and it's mildly entertaining, but it's nothing special.

  • June 10, 2010, 7:52 a.m. CST

  • June 10, 2010, 8:42 a.m. CST

    Hollywood Insider Films...

    by Peter David

...are as prey to Sturgeon's Law as anything else. Ninety percent of them are going to be crap, just like ninety percent of action films are going to be crap. But there's a lot more (for instance) action films and lots more comedies, so they seem to be more successful as a genre. Jimmy Hollywood, et al, weren't bad because they were insider films. They were bad because they were badly written, acted and directed. "The Player," on the other hand, was brilliant. For that matter, the smart money in Hollywood said the western was dead. Then "Unforgiven" opened and suddenly they said something else.<p> All that matters is what's on the screen. Until that happens, discussions of the film's relative merit is just academic.

my view on tropic thunder is..

    by emeraldboy

there was a lot hysterical over reaction from those meatheads in the us disability orgs. i have a learning disability but i want to make clear that i was not offended by the term full retard. the movie is a badly written vulgar and unfunny vanity project. the end of the movie was one of the worst examples of film which was up its own arse. look I admire stillers ambition making the movie but it just revealed all the people were equally as smug and vainglorious as stiller was. the scene where stiller as a retard has to preform a scene as the retarded character from his fictional movie simple jack was revolting, toe curling and not funny at all. by that point the movie was up its own ass anyway. zoolander is stillers comedy masterpiece. and not the bloated vanity project called tropic thunder. tropic thunder is just not funny.

Wow, you guys are WAY too slow on reporting this

    by D.Vader

And Herc, YOU are the one reporting this news? Why? Quint and Harry and Merrick and Beaks and Capone are too damn busy? I know Merrick and Capone mainly do reviews nowadays, and that's all. The responsibility to report cool news falls on Merrick now mostly, since Harry is too lazy to pay attention. And Quint has his horror movie to work on. I don't k ow what Merrick's excuse is. <p> So, I assume that you, Herc, see cool news being reported on other websites and no one at AICN mentions it, so you feel the need to step up and out of the Coaxial section and do it yourself. Am I right? Either way, and even though it's late, thank you for doing it. I know Merrick can't single handedly run the site himself, but it's good to see you care enough to report on something our of your realm.

    Will be an epic failure

    by Rob0729

I thought Les Grossman was hilarious in Tropical Thunder, but like most hilarious secondary characters in comedy movies, the character doesn't have enough to carry a film. Bill Murray was brilliant as Carl the Groundskeeper, but an entire movie of Carl probably would kill the magic. Rick Moranis was hilarious as Louis Tully in Ghostbusters, but a Louis Tully movie would be torture. Is anyone clamoring for a McLovin movie? <br><br> I guess a mockumentory might work, but it would have to have a strong supporting cast who got a lot of screen time (like Caddyshack which really didn't have a central character they primarily focused on for most of the movie).

    by Jabroni

In the vein of Spinal Tap or Borat, this could be good. I have not watched Mtv in years, but once his performance hit "the nets" I set the DVR for record. His dancing with J-Lo was incredibly funny and I could see something great if they make it like a documentary on his life. The key is to treat it serious, and that's where the humor is. If you need guidance just look at "Black Dynamite" funny, because it was treated serious.

TakingScorpiosCalls - I guess Black was the less funny one

    by daggor

Mostly due to the potential his character had. His character could have slowly developed into a rampaging maniac in the film, but he was really restrained. Cruise wasn't funny, either (more to the point, he ISN'T funny) but I can see where people would get a kick out of him as Les in small doses. Like when your dad puts on a funny hat and dances around.

    by Jabroni

A year later and Tropic Thunder is now to be hated. This movie was balls out "R" rated funny. All I ever see on this site is nothing is raw and edgy in comedy. Tropic Thunder, was pretty fucking edgy, and such a great mature comedy, to see all this hate is confusing. Cruise owened every scene he was in. The more I check in on this site the more confused I get, as everything, past present and future gets hated on. You can't tell me eveyone on this site is here because they all agree with Harry that 70's Lolita porn is awesome. Zoolander is funny as hell and I for one enjoyed the fuck out of Tropic Thunder. Vanity project or not the tone of Thunder is pitch perfect and it gets everything right. How about mentioning a funnier movie that has come out in the more recent past that is funnier than Thunder. Please. I can think of one that was equally as good..."Role Models" other than that it's been a bunch of gay Bromance flicks like Sarah Marshall, and I Love You Man. Funny, but way to gay. It got to be irritating in TT

    Someone above mentioned doing it...

    by conspiracy

like a hard, yet comedic, look at Hollywood; how the town destroyed Les. THAT might work...if they indeed make a black comedy and take no prisoners when it comes to the Hollywood grinder.</p><p>Truth is the entire entertainment industry is FULL of Les Grossmans...FULL; and if they get the guts to take a pin to that balloon, much more so than TT did, I'd watch.

The character was notable only because it was Tom Cruise

    by Thunderbolt Ross

I don't think it was really all that funny. People just thought it was novel to see Tom Cruise act like that. Which it was, I guess.

"Someone above mentioned doing it like a hard, yet comedic, look at Hollywood; how the town destroyed Les."<p> Pretty sure that was my take on it. Glad you agree.<p> "The character was notable only because it was Tom Cruise."<p> What does that even mean? Axel Foley was only notable because hew as Eddie Murphy; do you really think "Beverly Hills Cop" would have been as good if Sylvester Stallone had starred in it, as he was originally supposed to? For that matter, Rocky was only notable because of Stallone. Jack Sparrow was supposed to be a classic, Errol Flyn-style character before Johnny Depp got his hands on him. When an actor inhabits a character that effectively, I tend to give him props for it, not be dismissive of him.

    Anyone complaining about Tropic Thunder...

    by SK229

is OUT OF THEIR FUCKING MINDS... you should all be creaming your pants over this kind of balls-to-the-wall comedy over the repetitive horse shit that Apatow and his crew peddle. THAT stuff is all the actors and the director sucking both their own and the movie industry's dick, especially Funny People... that movie was fucking insulting, especially the obviousness of the neurotic jew fantasy of Apatow's hot wife rejecting her alpha male husband because he goes to massage parlors. Like, is he working out some high school shit there? Give me a fucking break... grow the fuck up. Tropic Thunder was a return to shit like Trading Places, Coming to America, and Caddyshack... comedy that doesn't rely exclusively on dick jokes, judaism jokes, marijuana jokes, and slacker pop culture references. There's shit in here that's conceptual character based humor that you don't see much anymore. Les Grossman, to take one example, is a guy who literally cannot be embarrassed and is an evil fuck with no morals that is in control of every situation he is in. He's like Daniel Plainview if he became a producer... I love those kinds of characters, because people want to pretend they don't exist in the real world or try to search out their motivations, but a lot of people in charge of the world are actually like this.<p>You could delineate this kind of stuff in every character in that movie and nearly everything they do and say is a comment on the bloat, pretension, and cluelessness of not just the movie industry, but war movies, racism, rap music, double standards of acceptance, drug addiction, Eddie Murphy's comedy in recent years, pretentious actors, Hollywood celeb causes of the day... there's so much shit in there that it's hard to take it all in. Stiller went for the jugular and then danced in the blood with Tropic Thunder, I have no idea how this can go unappreciated HERE of all places.

    Owen Wilson

    by Rodie

I hope Stiller gives him a role in this, especially since he was supposed to play the agent role in Tropic Thunder until the suicide attempt and the part went to McConaughey. . .Wilson's laidback chill would play well opposite Cruise's vulgar intensity in this!

Tropic Thunder had some great moments...

    by Jaka

...and Les Grossman was in a couple of 'em. Count me way in as I'd love to Cruise stop trying to be an action star for a minute.

Les Grossman was funny in TT, but audiences are clamoring for this spin-off about as much as they were wanting a stand-alone Aldous Snow movie (i.e. basically indifferent to the idea). I can't help but wonder if this is Viacom kissing and making up with Tom Cruise by way of a vanity project...Paramount would be better off getting busy with Zoolander 2.

    Who the fuck cares?

    by thegreatwhatzit

Tom, do a credit to your community and come out of the closet. The "relationship" with your "wife" is truly funny (the worst "beard" since Mitch Miller. Everytime that Cruise was "outted" by a tabloid, he'd hook up--briefly--with a hottie). Oprah's overly-rehearsed "candid" visit to his estate prompted gales of laughter on THE SOUP (Cruise playing straight man to his spouse). His latest films have either barely broken even or lost money. C'mon Cruise, now's the time...
