UPDATE W/ SCRIPT REVIEW!! Guess WHO's Playing Peter Vincent In The FRIGHT NIGHT Remake!?
Merrick again...
CC2K has posted a script review from the remake (HERE). Sounds problematic, but keep in mind that much could happen, for better or worse, between the draft read by CC2K and the final product.
Merrick here...
David Tennant will join the cast of the Craig Gillespie directed remake of 1985’s FRIGHT NIGHT. For those unfamiliar with Tennant’s work, he recently completed a high-profile stint as the enigmatic, charismatic “Doctor” on BBC’s mostly-excellent DOCTOR WHO. He was also Bartemius Crouch Junior in HARRY POTTER AND THE GOBLET OF FIRE.
Christopher Mintz-Plasse, who we saw a few months ago as Chris D’Amico/”Red Mist” in KICK-ASS, is also jumping on board the production.
Tennant will play Peter Vincent, a character who in the original movie was played by Roddy McDowall as the host of a late-night horror show. In the remake, he’s a Las Vegas magician whose show revolves around horror-movie imagery. Vincent claims to be a vampire expert, but when the teen turns to him for assistance, he’s less than helpful.
Mintz-Plasse is playing Evil Ed, Yelchin’s friend who feels slighted that Charlie has left his nerdy past behind and thus joins the vampire’s coven.
…says THR HERE.
We’ve previously learned that Anton “Chekov” Yelchin will be playing Charlie (a role originated by William Ragsdale) and Colin Farrell would be taking Chris Sarandon’s part (Jerry the vampire).
I’m not terribly fond of the idea of remaking this picture, but all of this casting seems…pretty damn good if you ask me. Tennant as a Vegas magician? Easy to imagine.
Tom Holland’s original FRIGHT NIGHT was recently added to Netflix streaming, where it is not available as an HD stream even though BARNEY THE DINOSAUR is. Also, it’s still available on DVD HERE

cannot be surpassed!
-
hopefully a lipstick lesbian like the original!
-
Anti-Tennant rants just moments away.
-
I didn't know you were LOST of the idea in the first place. Loved the original. Hated the idea of a remake, but having Tennant on board sparks my interest.
-
I don't want Tennant screwing up his chances for the Riddler (provided he's the villain) in the next Batman movie for a cheesy FRIGHT NIGHT remake.
-
If they keep the rear window vibe, without people saying "hey, that's just like suburbia! They ripped off Shia LeBeuff!". Tennant is a great choice.
-
I love David Tennant, so you all can fuck off. The original movie's great, but they're remaking every other fucking thing under the sun, so why stop here?
-
David fucking Tennant? He's supposed to be an genre legend who has fallen on hard times not some gurning, mugging sweaty sock who's barely had a career up to now. Hollywood has officially lost the plot.
-
Why not?<p>All I really care about is they keep the not-so-thinly-veiled queerness of the original.
-
Fuck this. <p> I avoided the Elm st. reboot, so I sure as hell am not gonna waste my time with an update of my favorite vampire film of all time. <p> Look... I have been a vampire nut since I was a kid. The first serious book I ever read was Bram Stokers Dracula. I was about twelve, so that places it about 1989. So I'm relatively an old fart by internet standards. From that point on I couldn't get enough. The first film I loved was the Frank Langella Dracula... Fuckin fantastic. <p> Since then I have done my utmost to watch every vampire film that ever exists. O have watched literally hundreds in many different languages but I just fucking adore Fright Night. <p> In my my mind(as a vampire nut) it is nearly the quintessential vampire film. It could literally exist nearly anywhere in the vampire canon post-Dracula. Just simply change the time setting and you have a set-up that can't lose.... <p> Fuck me ... am I drunk or what???
-
I just hope they keep it funny.
-
I'm 40. My friends and I don't see these films and young kids these days have never heard of these titles. There's plenty of untapped material out there for movies...
-
You're welcome.
-
She was soooo hot in part II
-
Peter Vincent a Vegas magician? Weak. Oh, and I think "the girl" is in this version "the mom". as played by Toni Collette.

if christopher mintz-plasse is in it, i'll actually watch.
by RedHorseVector
listen, i love fright night and i hate remakes, but there's something about that kid. he makes me laugh.
-
Amazing. <p> But still no Spider-Man casting rumor. I don't quite get it.
-
June 9, 2010, 10:28 a.m. CST
wow... that sounded at the end like they should do it..
by NomoredirtyjokespleaseweareYanks
fuck that. Leave it as it is. As someone said, it needs someone like Roddy. He da fuckin man. Not to mention Chris Sarandon, Brad Fiedel...Feidel.... Fuck it, another beer should refresh the memory. Scuse me a moment...
-
He was supposed to be an older, washed up, late night TV horror show host. Tennant looks way too young. Casting so far looks good however.
-
...as i loves my 80's films. but vampires as charmers, i've never really loved. i need my vampires to be horrific like ye olde Nosferatu and the vamps of 30 days of night. a charmer vamp just isn't scary.
-
Apart from being at least twenty years too young for the role Tennant just doesn't have the washed up, cynical , working for food feel that Roddy gave off. he's far too fresh faced and new and is hardly what you'd call a genre veteran. Ah fuck it, I wasn't going to watch this anyway and with shit casting choices like this and farrell it only makes the original look that much more fangtastic.
-
i hope they never attempt a Lost Boys remake, yet i can feel one coming. there's one that needs not be touched. and if you do, i fucking dare you to attempt anything half as awesome as the greased up sax player. that shit is insane and makes me laugh every time.
-
just recently watched this with the wife, who handt seen it. it still stands up but I bet a remake could be good also!
-
I was in love with Deedee Pfeiffer after seeing that film.Shame her career never took off like her sister's did.
-
... part of the plot involves him looking wild-eyed, shouting like Al Pacino and running about.
-
I often wonder what became of that greasy sax player..
-
Haha, awesome. Thumbs up.
-
Colin Farrerll, really? I am not thrilled with taking the almost legendary Roddy McDowell role, but it sounds like they are going off a different track then the original. Plus, how many TV stations have horror shows like the one in Fright Night, I am thinking none. Better to update it with the Vegas con man approach. Good pick up for David though, more people need to see him be awesome.
-
Never even thought of Tennant as the Riddler. Let's make this happen!
-
That movie was pretty nuts.
-
good question man, he's probably dead from an overdose. <p> OR maybe he's traveling the countryside wailing on his pecks during the day, then wailing on his sax in the moonlight in the eve.
-
By your WHO reference I thought it would be Roger Daltrey, which makes more sense character-wise.
-

but legal problems hedl up this film, i'd like to take credit with discovering him in fact when rogan was looking for someone to cast as mclovin (who was just called lovin at the time) i sugesst christopher and he became a star, this will be my second film with him so i like to think of him as my Deniro
-
missed chance.
-
Ok, I love Tennant, and I think he's a FANTASTIC actor, full of energy and gravitas, but don't make him Peter Vincent. That role belongs to someone more aged, and world-weary. Here's an idea, most people think that it's too soon for this movie to be remade, and I lean slightly in that direction too. So how about this, save this cast, and sign them on to come back in 25 years and THEN remake this film. By that time Tennant will have that missing element needed for him to pull this off correctly. I've got no doubt that he's got the chops for it, but right now he isn't seasoned enough in the right way.
-
Tennant is a decent enough actor but I prefered other talkbackers nomination of Shatner for the role. Obviously the Peter Vincent character was older in the original but getting around this by making him a Vegas magician seems reasonable enough. Time will tell! Does anyone know when this likely to start filming?
-
who the heck do you get to play the Grace Jones role? Do they even make people like that any more?
-
LMAO That was poetry
-
Surandon as the old washed up actor-turned-hero is not going to happen.
-
You've got to give this part to a ubiquitous B-list genre actor from the '80s like say, oh I don't know, JEFFREY COMBS or something.
-
Sounds like a complete balls-up waiting to happen. One of the best things about 'Fright Night' was the idea of having a frail old actor who's spent decades of his life fighting "vampires" in films without actually believing in them, only to come face to face with a real one in his golden years. He was an amalgamation of "Peter" Cushing and "Vincent" Price, FFS. This remake sounds like a fucking vampire version of 'The Prestige' or something. Two rival magicians, one's a vampire and the other just happens to be an expert on vampires. Ugh.
-

Vincent needed to be played by someone already an icon,
by The Reluctant Austinite
but David Tennant will work. Roddy McDowall had a long career of genre work behind him which added tremendously to the character. He was actually from the generation of great, classic horror stars. Tennant is an interesting actor, however, so I think he can pull it off. The Mintz-Plasse casting as Evil Ed is actually kind of inspired. I don't know how to feel about all of this. I LOVED the original "Fright Night", but it was a sleeper hit; the only "star" in the picture was McDowall. This one is full of recognizable faces. The remakes of 80s cult flicks that have been worth their weight in celluloid (or in digital bits) have been few and far between. I don't want to get my heart crushed again by getting too excited about this project.
-
..Ian McKellen would've been perfect.
-
I suspect good things. The original is over-rated
-
i normally don't like when it leaks but i'm really proud of this one
-
In reading that script review it sounds like they have driven a wooden stake right through the original movie's heart, and HEART was what made that movie work! ATROCIOUS!
-
Some gems:<p>"If anything, the remake of Fright Night will be a newer version of Disturbia with fangs – and that just sucks!"<p>"All of this makes Fright Night a fun film to watch even if it’s not Halloween."<p>"The gore in this should be fantastic if stuck to"<p>"In this morass of insanity I do have to think the writers for keeping the relationship with Amy"<p>Not that I believe the script is gold, but I have a hard time reading criticism from clearly stupid people.
-
so teens can relate to it. <p>this is me texting "fail".
-
...for Tennant to play this role. <br><br> And to remake this film. <br> <br> I disagree that this is a good cast. I like Farrell in some roles but he's wrong for this role (and also too young). Tennnant is also greta but this is a role for somebody like Shatner, Landau, Rickman, Christopher Lee, Bob Barker, etc.
-
Agree with flip63hole(make another troopers with verhoven and Cameron) that nobody thesedays even knows they're remakes and anyone that does- well I guess I would netflix instant it someday to compare it with the original out of morbid curiosity. I nominate Andy Sanburg for the zombie caretaker

by UltraTron
"breakfast, lunch and dinner!" Actually that's what he says after eating pussy in his sex vid, but it's a good line.
-
Probably only Lady Gaga comes close to the weirdness that is Grace Jones. Shame she looks more like Lamb Chop than a centuries old vampire though.
-
and, I'm sure, skeptical of anything supernatural, being a PROFESSIONAL magician and all. It doesn't have the same feel as a old cheesy Hammer-style actor.
-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9fH-nJi_Nc
-
was the role, not the man. He can do more, people.
-
Fuck it and everybody involved. I hope it drives one-note-McLuvin into gay porn like the real Evil Ed.
-
in the headline i thought it said:<br> "Guess WHO's Playing Vincent Price In The FRIGHT NIGHT Remake!?"
-
The original is so cheesy and goofy, but it's incredibly fun to watch. And as a fan of Tennant, this sounds like a good prospect. I'm on board for this remake (and that's a first).
-
...sucked the first time out? Roddy McDowell was okay, but the kid that looked like a time traveller from the 1960's who landed in the 80's? Marcy from Married With Children? That ugly vampire kid who now plays ugly adult bit parts in everything? Christ that movie sucked. Christ the 80's sucked, too. I HATE the 80's! Bring on 90's nostalgia, I'm bored... lets have remakes of Pulp Fiction, Jurassic Park and Volcano.
-
Colin Farrell is on the screen. He's NOT going to pull off a good vampire that's for certain.
-
If the script holds up...might there actually be a good remake in the works?
-
That no one has yet suggested The Chin as washed-up Vegas Magician Peter Vincent. It'd be a wildly different take, but I think it'd be one we'd all enjoy. I love Tennant as well, and I'm sure he'll be great, but McDowell had big shoes.
-
DO NOT WANT!
-
Jay Leno?
-
Stakes his prey with old Clinton jokes.
-
and he's already been in a so called movie with the same premise. nonetheless i think Bruce is much too awesome for this movie.
-
film premise, but a similar character to Peter Vincent.
-
His history in Hollywood. The fact that he was in the same generation as Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing. If I were looking for similar casting, I might look at Robert Englund or some one of his age group and having some kind of genre background.
-
The original is like A Nightmare On Elm Street 2 Now. We didn't know it was gay back then, but we sure do now. Frightnight is a very gay film. Nuclear Gay.
-
Tennant is one of the best fucking actors around but he's too young to play the part of the mcdowell character. I never rated Fright night as a classic film at all,it was reasonable at best. The cast looks solid so i'll prob see. Id rather Tennant was still paying doctor who though even though im enjoying his succsessor Matt smith more than i thought i would !
-
But the dude looks exactly like Roddy McDowell so I say go for it.</p><p>However, Plasse as Evil Ed.....I'm not really seeing that at all.
-
You know, before they became knee-scraping sluts?
-
But David Tennant? I didn't see THAT one coming.
-
Remember when you didn't have to go elsewhere for rumors and scoops? You got everything at AICN?
-
Just askin'
-
...That should have gone to Bill Nighy. Ho hum. I'm sure he'll be fine though. I hope he'll one day learn to talk with an American accent so he can get a break out role all the other Brits and Aussies have.
-
My interest meter in this remake just went from zero to VERY upon hearing this news. Awesome.
-

Jerry should be the doc from Human Centipede
by YoyodynePropulsionSystems
He should also play Scary German Guy in the other movie I forbid to be remade but nobody listened, The Monster Squad. But yeah, f this remake.
-
And Mintz-Plasse will be taking the Evil Ed role. This project is officially buttfucked.
-
This film is gonna have one HELL of an ensemble. Yelchin needs this stuff.
-
June 9, 2010, 1:39 p.m. CST
So, does this mean Mintz-Plasse will end up doing gay porn?
by Mr. Pricklepants
Just like the original Evil Ed.
-
Tennant is a charismatic and exciting actor. I hope to see him in more big roles.
-
I called it back when they announced Anton. I knew they would go for him cause he's got the geeky thing going for him and he has an odd laugh. He basically was the only "name" actor who fit the role. I'm sure they could've gotten an unknown who would've killed it, but you know Mintz-Plasse was #1 on the list.
-
This has got to be a joke. First that unibrowed midget as Dandridge, now this talentless manic fool as Vincent? Jeebus H Christmas, if ever there was a remake that had zero fucking hope of being a decent movie on it's own, this is it folks. Pull the plug and flush this insulting turd now. This is disgraceful.
-
I would not have thought about that, but he fits the role PERFECTLY!!!
-
casting. Or if it were more a Peter Vincenty type role.....Ian McKellan....or slightly out of the box Bill Shatner.
-
But I preferred the character from the original movie. They should have kept him as he was and, as someone above said, it should have gone to Bill Nighy.
-
I'm sure he's quite happy with the steady paycheck from Burn Notice, thank you very much.<p>Wonder if gets late night calls from Raimi saying, hey bud, if you lose about 20 pounds I can put you in Evil Dead IV. And don't worry about the stunts, we can digitize ya'.
-
had any brains, they'd put ASH in as a playable cameo for Dead Rising 2. With chainsaw arm of course.
-
I love Bruce and I can't wait to meet me on Saturday, but that film was chringy worth all the way through. I understand it was cheaply made, but damn youtube videos have better production. It wasn't that funny either which shocked me.
-
June 9, 2010, 5:12 p.m. CST
David Tennant?!?! Well now I'm looking for to this remake!
by HollywoodHellraiser
At least there somebody in here who won't take them too seriously and knows how to have fun!
-
yep.
-
That is all.
-
Tennant was god-awful as Who, and whoever cast him as Peter Vincent must be an absolute cretin. Roddy McDowal to David fucking Tennant. Let's remake Casablance while we're at it, Pee Wee Hernan can play Rick. Fuck. Every bit of news about this movie is worse than the last. What's next? Lady GaGa as Amy and Taylor Lautner as Ed?? Fuck this movie.
-
That odd little guy who played Evil Ed. Rumour has it he or his identical twin (!) did gay porn. He was great in "Fraternity Vacation" though with Tim Robbins.
-
They don't ever bring it up anymore because he's trying to get back into the horror biz but yeah he did it.
-
Who 'bout he who points out blatant contradictions in the review of the script? In the first paragraph, the writer notes that Fright Night "wasn’t the best vampire film but has become an instant classic." Not to pick a nit here, but you either ARE an instant classic OR you BECOME a classic. The concept of "has become" invalidates the notion of "instant." Second, the writer spends a paragraph bemoaning the update-y stuff (Facebook, iPhone, etc.) then criticizes "'the formal' (what are we living in 1952?)." Seems a little contradictory to me. But whatever. Productions change. This is a review of the script. I need to know a lot more about the production (and any further script drafts) before I make my yea or nay decision on this one 'cause I loved the original.
-
Would you believe "how 'bout?"
-
A-fucking-trocious. And I love Campbell. Got both his books and fucking fifty versions (or whatever) of fucking Evil Dead. (Shit, just realized the Raimi was pimping those versions of Evil Dead that were, essentially, just different boxes! Fuck, who needs update fx a la Lucas! Let's just slap a different cover on the fucker! Bike Sharer will dish out the cash!)
-
Brisco County, Jr.! I watch every ep of that show, every year. Shit, I can't even get Kelly Rutherford's name right half the time. I just call her "Dixie."
-
His hyper, overly excitable Doctor grated on my nerves. If he came buzzing around me blithering about how much he loves the human race and trying to give me hugs, I'd try to punch the fucker out, Venutian Aikido be damned! The old school program (up until Colin Baker ruined it with his psycho/fruity Doctor) is my favorite show of all time yet I've only managed to suffer through 2 or 3 of the 10th Doctor's adventures. Here's hoping he's bearable in the remake. Whatever the case, he's nowhere near Roddy McDowell league!
-
hopefully he dies before the film starts shooting
-
McLovin as Evil Ed? Fuck that shit and fuck this ridiculous remake!!
-
Fright Night is one of my favorite movies and doesn't need a remake but then again, almost every movie being remade doesn't need one either. With Disney involved i'm willing to bet this is PG or PG-13 and geared more towards the Twilight crowd. I guess two good things come out of this: Fright Night 2 re-released and Fright Night on blu ray but like all remakes, the original is barely ever mentioned by the cast/crew, which is disrespectful to the people who make the original.
-
or extremely ignorant, because she doesn't seem to understand the original. "...The 1985 film also reveled in poking fun at how ridiculous the vampire genre had become with the character of Peter Vincent..." Huh? Peter Vincent was an obvious anachronistic homage to Hammer Horror, in a time when audiences were more interested in slasher schlock. Also: "...The original had Sarandon playing the vampire as a suave, sophisticated nice guy who never came off menacing..." The hell you say?!?
-
character's vocation.
-
Brilliant casting in my opinion. Loved Roddy McDowell in the original, but I like the idea of doing something different with the character in more 'relevant' to today.
-
leave this classic alone.
-
Okay, my Riddler question had been taken care of... I'm still wary of the magician slant...unless they have him in guyliner. Hot.
-
He'll play this very over the top, he'll ruin every scene that he's in. The man simply can't play villains, he's too self-conscious.
-
He's like the mini midget that puts up a big front and gets in a lot of fights to make up for his insecurities about being a mini midget. Dandridge had a menacing calm where he could be intimidating with very little effort.
-
as Peter Vincent.
-
It was like his third appearance on the show before I realized it was him.
-
- is that the original Fright Night, probably will be released in a proper special Blu Ray edition. Hopefully along with the sequel. I dont agree with David Tennant as Peter Vincent - yes he is a great actor - but come on!! Peter Vincent - the perfect choice as stated before, would be Christopher Lee. And the best way of handling this film, is to do it meta. A new kid, seeking Chris Sarandon and William Ragsdale for help in fighting a next door vampire. Now, that would be a film I could get excited about. But this is just a boring, uninspired, and totally meaningless. And after reading the draft - I have lost all hope. Excuse me - but ... FUCK!! FUCK!! FUUUUUUCK!!!!
-
Rumor has it that the role of Amy Peterson (Amanda Bearse) will be incorporated into the Mother role (to be played by Toni Collete).<p>This basically means that the primary driving theme of the first movie will not exist. It will be morphed into Charlie and Peter Vincent saving Charlie's "mother" which, presumeably, will be the love interest for Dandridge.<p>This has fucking ass written all over it and I don't care if they got the greatest actors throughout all time...it will be fucking shit and I'd guess all of us know it.<p>Now, sight unseen, we're all happy to rail against something and usually mum if it proves wrong but I would not only happily stand corrected, I'd be fucking THRILLED to be wrong on this.<p>But I won't be wrong on this. Mark my words. This is going to be forgotten within a few weeks at best.<p>Fright Night is simply lightening in a bottle...like so many other beloved geek films. Even with the exact same people and bringing back Roddy from the dead...it wouldn't work. It would still be a pale imitator to the original.<p>Why doesn't Hollywood get this? Raking cash is the obvious answer but isn't this also "art"? Doesn't it...shouldn't it mean more than just money?<p>Again, I'd be thrilled to be wrong.
-
Roddy McDowall is irreplaceable, it would have be better going with a female like Elvira or Jamie Lee Curtis, but the way this movie is going, I don't doubt that it will be just another mess that Hollywood had made just for the quick cash. Fuck you Hollywood.
-
... and thanks to a kind IMDB poster for that, by the way... the script is okay, with a few interesting tweaks on the premise, but neither Dandridge and Vincent get enough screen time to make much of an impression. As is, they'll be onscreen for fifteen minutes apiece, if that. (The main female characters are also both very underwritten, which is a disappointment given Noxon's history with writing Buffy and some Betty-centric episodes of Mad Men.) Anyway, if everyone brings their A-game to this flick, it'll be a fun time - if they slum their way through a "shitty genre flick" for a paycheck, then it's a different story.
