Herc Says Andy Kindler, Greg Giraldo & Craig Robinson Bring The Funny For Tonight’s Return Of LAST COMIC STANDING!!

I am – Hercules!! Can a reality show ever really get cancelled? Because their components are so interchangeable, “The Amazing Race,” “The Mole,” and “I’m A Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here” were all revived after absences of a year or more. “Last Comic Standing,” which launched in 2003 but fielded no new episodes in 2005 or 2009, is back tonight with its first new episode in 22 months. The layoffs are probably a good thing, giving the stand-up world a little time to heal and regenerate, and producers a litt+le perspective about what in their franchises are most in need of fixing. Some notes on tonight’s highly enjoyable season-seven premiere of “Last Comic Standing,” mostly cribbed from Evil Mirror Herc: * Craig Robinson (“The Office,” “Hot Tub Time Machine”) replaces forgotten MTV veejay Bill Bellamy, which means “Standing” has its first funny host since 2004. Robinson’s not given much to do in the premiere, but I’ve seen enough of both Robinson and Bellamy to know we’re in excellent hands. * Another mammoth upgrade! The three judges, at least for the premiere, are Andy Kindler, Nastaha Leggero and Greg Giraldo. Andy and Greg are genuinely hilarious here, and Natasha may be as well, but it's hard to tell because she's so fricking adorable. * The trio are an unbelievable improvement over the two effeminate Tonight Show bookers who cast Ant a few seasons ago. Their interactions with audition-seekers are facile, and Kindler is especially hilarious giving the contestants intentionally bad advice. I’m very hopeful all three continue as the auditions more to other cities; they absolutely make the premiere. * Kindler to clueless auditioner dressed as Bigfoot: "I don't want to use the word 'one-note'..." * In (often rain-soaked) line outside the Hollywood Improv are people claiming to have been in line there 36, 72 and 87 hours. * A montage demonstrates that a lot of contestants use the line "I know what you're thinking" and a lot of contestants joke about their own mixed ethnicities. * A straight fellow with a gay mustache is so discouraged by the quiet, empty audition room that he seems to give up even though the judges think he’s funny enough to want him back. * One contestant is Laurie Kilmartin, a single mom who’s been a comic for 22 years. * Cathy Ladman, who was on The 12th Annual Young Comedians Special in 1988, is perhaps the most famous contestant. She comes prepared with a hilarious bit about Hilter. * The first two hours are blissfully free of the deep-pocketed but inept Buck Starr and his Buck Starr Show. Alas, though we only see snippets of acts, I sense again that how funny a comedian is continues to be is only a secondary or tertiary consideration in the casting process. It’s this aspect of the series I most dislike and the chief reason I sometimes abandon the enterprise midseason. According to Patrick Milligan , these are this summer’s 10 finalists: 8 p.m. Monday. NBC.
