Stanley Tucci is going to administer performance enhancing drugs to CAPTAIN AMERICA!!!

Published at:  Jun 07, 2010 2:51:01 PM CDT

Hey folks, Harry here... Well, the good news is, Stanley Tucci is in Captain America. The bad news, he's playing a very brief part, most likely. I always thought of this part going to someone a bit more frail than Stanley. Like um... John Carradine. But he's dead. Here's the Press Release...

Stanley Tucci Confirmed as Dr. Abraham Erskine in
Marvel Studios’ CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER

Marvel Studios announced today that Oscar® nominated actor Stanley Tucci has been cast to star as Dr. Abraham Erskine in the studio’s highly anticipated movie CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER opposite Chris Evans, Sebastian Stan, Hugo Weaving, and Hayley Atwell. In the early comics, Dr. Erskine was a German scientist behind Project Rebirth, the secret experiment that created the Super Soldier known as Captain America. Joe Johnston will direct the film penned by Christopher Markus & Stephen McFeely.

Marvel Studios’ Kevin Feige will produce CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER. Alan Fine, Stan Lee, David Maisel and Louis D’Esposito will executive produce. The film will be released in the US on July 22, 2011 and distributed by Paramount Pictures.

CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER will focus on the early days of the Marvel Universe when Steve Rogers volunteers to participate in an experimental program that turns him into the Super Soldier known as Captain America.

Tucci’s credits include JULIE & JULIA, Peter Jackson’s THE LOVELY BONES, for which he was nominated for an Academy Award, and THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA. He can next be seen in the upcoming comedy EASY A as well as the upcoming movie musical BURLESQUE.

In addition to CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER, Marvel Studios most recently released the highly anticipated sequel, IRON MAN 2, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Gwyneth Paltrow on May 7, 2010, and will release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including, THOR on May 6, 2011, and MARVEL STUDIOS’ THE AVENGERS on May 4, 2012.

Tucci is represented by CAA.

well I must say this cast so far is simply awesome. Tucci is good news. weaving practically looks like a skull and has an incredible voice (i'm sure his german accent is up to snuff), tommy lee jones is always great when he's some sort of american cop or authority type figure. Evans will shine as Cap i believe... sweet damn i can't wait for this one.

I could be wrong... but I'm getting a massive fail vibe for this film adaptation. So, someone correct me if I'm wrong... this won't be called Captain America... it will be called The First Avenger? I'm sure overseas this well go really well... I bet they're so ignorant... they won't recognize the red, white, and blue. /sarcasm off. The costume looks like shit. Finally, I fail to see how a superhero... his only powers are some enhanced strength, agility, reflexes, etc. and the ability to throw a shield like a boomerang is going to charm audiences? You know they're going to have to "Bay" this adaptation up. Who thinks there will be at least one "Don't ask don't tell" joke?

Actually it's the other way around. The serum that Ross gave Blonsky is a flawed version of the same serum that turned Steve Rodgers into Captain America.

    History lesson

    by ilander66

Right the most traditional version is that Steve Rogers is a weakling who is too frail to serve in the war so signs up for the super soldier program gets injected etc. And becomes cap America. Think blonsky in the incrdible hulk during that campus fight and less protuding bones. Also I thought that the red skulls face was all ucked up not a mask which was the reason for his apperance.

    don't forget...

    by imagegod

that Rogers got the serum AND was subjected to the Vita Rays... which other folks like Blonsky didn't get which is why Blonsky is hopping around like Cap, but only a moderate version of Cap.

    I Think Audiences WILL Buy This . . .

    by dave i

"Finally, I fail to see how a superhero... his only powers are some enhanced strength, agility, reflexes, etc. and the ability to throw a shield like a boomerang is going to charm audiences?"

I could be WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY off here. However, his abilities are likely above Olympian level. Like ALL of them. He should be able to go toe-to-toe with Hulk (although he's not as strong by far), he's a natural leader, they can do a lot with him on-screen similar to Blonsky in Hulk (which was already pretty cool), only better. The real reason I think audiences will buy into Captain America is two-fold. First, charisma. From what I can tell (and have seen/read) of the character, he embodies the epitome of leader. So in essence, we'll buy him because he's John Wayne. Only with super powers. Sure, they have to sell that quality for my point to hold any water. However, the charismatic leader/war-hero has sold in arguably less interesting or original stories. Second, mainly with American audiences (obviously), I think he might hit home with a patriotic message. Not with everybody. However, I still think there is some backlash from the 9-11 terrorist attacks, it is a character who embodies American patriotism, and he's really a hero who seems to exist to embody and promote the American Dream and the core values this nation was founded on, paired against the evil of the Nazi's and a (albeit fictionalized) representation of their evil experiments. Additionally, in the future, it could be interesting to see how those 1940's values play in a modern world compared to modern values, the evils of society (citizens AND political actions). If done right, I think people might be surprised at how much of Steve Rogers translates to audiences. Done wrong, it could be a total camp fest or just ring hollow. Their casting suggests the former though. I'm officially excited to see this and how it all ends up.-Cheers

The part about Spacey, since you originally said you'd not say anything more after alluding to who was full of himself. I just thought the line about "[i]f it was Spacey he's have done an interview where he talked about what a special person it made him for 45 minutes" was pretty funny, but not as restrained as your earlier post indicated you were planning to be with your earlier "[t]hat's all I have to say about that" comment. It just read pretty funny as a whole. I had a good laugh over it, intention humor or not.-Cheers

I got a funny feeling these two film will fail with

    by thejudger

the common movie goer. This and Thor just look to god damned ridiculous. The actors playing the main characters are not the types of actors anyone would really lose their minds to hang out with. The costumes look fucking silly. Capt America's is confusing the hell outta me because I can't tell if it's a modern day outfit or the one he wore while he was in the war. If it is a war time version of the suit it's very wrong. The pants should be regular fucking pants, not the weird impossible honeycomb spidey wanna be spandex pants they are, and the shoulder things look too fucking weird no matter what time period the suit is trying to be. Thor is just a joke all around. That beard is full of fail. It looks like teen weak sauce fine hair growth, and it's too damn short. I don't know I just don't feel the drive to see these films, but of course i want to bitch about it, I think the casuals will like it even less. Might it also be a mistake to title this film ":The First Avenger" because if it fails, Casuals will see the name "Avengers" later on for that movie and think wait a minute is this a follow up to that stupid fucking Capt America movie.

The pics aren't what the films will look like, though

    by jaka

The film won't be smiley guys in costumes with a bright white background. They'll be on sets or locations with lighting that hopefully works well with their costumes. Plus, there will be a shit ton of post production work done frame by frame to give them an appropriate look and feel. Those promo images really aren't good for judging the finished look of the films. Now, for making fun of how goofy a guy looks standing there in a super hero costume, sure, they served that purpose quite well.

Chris Evans with John Wayne charisma? Not likely. "Leadership" classified as a superhero superpower? Meh. The patriotic aspect might produce some dollars domestically... but overseas box office? Not too sure... unless it has massive action and special effects.

    Cast and movies

    by miyamoto_musashi

I think after recent example of good to great casts being in disappointing movies, I am not so gungho about the cast. I get it we aren't getting clips anytime soon and its good to know good people are involved, but if you look at something like Clash of the Titans, its all down to execution, driven by the script, producers and most importantly director. Look at something like District 9 with a cast of unknowns as far as most of the audience was concerned, but a brilliant brilliant movie.
Think my nervousness comes down to Joe Johnston being one of the most consistently mediocre directors of recent years. Well there is a chance he could be inconsistent on this one and make something decent. we can hope

    Just a few responses:
"Chris Evans with John Wayne charisma? Not likely."
We'll see. I'm not judging this a failure or a success. I'm saying that was what made the character special; we'll see how Chris Evans does, but in the comics that is kind of what made people follow him and not ask for Superman or Spider-Man instead.
""Leadership" classified as a superhero superpower? Meh."Fair enough. To be fair, I never said that was a superpower. It IS important though. Start out from your everyday life. Think of the most motivational leader or just somebody who genuinely inspired you. Then add super-powers to him. Hence, the analogy of somebody who is essentially a John Wayne type of character, only MUCH larger than life.

"The patriotic aspect might produce some dollars domestically... but overseas box office? Not too sure... unless it has massive action and special effects."Yeah, for that I meant mainly for the U.S. market.
    "Just scanning wiki...
This accounts for many of his extraordinary feats, including bench pressing 1100 pounds (500 kg) and running a mile (1.6 km) in little more than a minute.[80] Furthermore, his enhancements are the reason why he was able to survive being frozen in suspended animation for decades.

    Meh."

I don't know, the guy could bench press a full-grown horse, if you left for school without your lunch he could catch up to you with your brown bag at highway speeds, he's got apparently the highest possible human levels of endurance, agility, speed, reflexes, durability and healing ability (so take any miraculous story you've ever heard, and Captain America's got all of that, likely better).

"Besides, Captain America got taken out like a bitch by a sniper on the steps of the courthouse. So much for reflexes and his survival and combat training."Touché. Even then, he's gotta be pushing 90, he was at point blank range, in the back, even most superheroes move at a slower-than-bullets rate of speed, and that's why he wears camouflag . . ., er, bright primary colors, and a virtually indestructible shield.O.k., so he's not perfect, big deal. I think it could do well. If it's a good movie, it should find an audience. I mean it's got a guy taking out Nazis and fighting a guy with a gleaming red skull. That's got to sell at least SOME tickets!-Cheers

i think he does have charisma but not sure yet if it is the right kind for this role. he is more of the human torch/spider-man type but if he can tone it down a little and not be so kenetic then he will make a good cap. isn't captain america supposed to be kinda cocky tho? maybe i don't know enough about the character either

    thesmilingpsycho; Cap's Personality

    by dave i

I haven't read a ton, but I thought in most Captain America comics/depictions, he was more of an inspiring into-the-trenches leader, but the Ultimate was apparently cockier and more or a prick. Somebody correct me here if I'm way off. However, I just think of him as somebody who was a total weakling, but committed enough to take on the mantle of America's iconic centerpiece during the (arguably) most important war ever. Also, an important aspect is his guilt in Bucky dying in WWII, so the aspect of him as a protector and the gravitas of that role should, to me, be part of the character. However, it could be kind of neat if they had him go from a pushed-around pansy to a cocky super-human, to some balance of realization of his full potential alongside the awareness that it's still not enough, especially for those people & principles he cares about, and that he's got the proverbial weight of his entire country on his shoulders.Of course, how much of any of those attributes (if any) gets used is beyond me, and I'm not entirely sure of how accurate my overall impression of him is as I've not gotten exposure to THAT much of his comics and such.-Cheers

well i think if they try to go the noble leader route people will just laugh at him and u don't want that. especially since he will be most likely battling wits with iron man in the avengers film. i think he's gonna need a certain cockiness about him. otherwise they will just make a joke out of him

originally, Cap is known for humility, not arrogance. he's made a bit more cocky in the Ulitmates, but nothing like Stark is off the charts in that department. for the films i'd bet on making him the humble 40s fella who is quite serious about war and fighting for his beliefs. he'll be coming up with incredible battle plans, a cocky Stark will have no choice but to repsect him. crazy costume or not, his abilities will speak for themselves and win everyone over i think.

    Strangely, I'm Thinking . . .

    by dave i

Tony Stark and Steve Rogers could play like Adam Corolla and Dr. Drew (the witty comedian and the straight man). But a bit of a certain cockiness could play right. I see him being more Superman or Luke Skywalker than Han Solo (not necessarily a Boy Scout, but in some ways decidedly NOT Iron Man or Spider-Man). However, I'm willing to see how they play it and go in with as few preconceptions as possible since there are (I believe anyway) a few different ways Cap's been presented, and the character could (should?) evolve considering all they're going to throw at him.-Cheers

THAT is what I'd like to see. Somebody who's humble but still brilliant and just SOOOOOOO good that Tony Stark can make his quip, then see how good Captain America is, and then just literally have to go along with it. I'm envisioning very much a man-of-action who doesn't HAVE to say anything, just exudes confidence and ability and strength to the level that you just HAVE to take his lead!-Cheers

Very different style character than Cap, but he still carries that confident but not cocky image. Chris Evans can be a genuinely great actor, and I believe he's Captain America. You'll see. Ulitmates Cap

    by imagegod

ya you're probably right, they will veer towards the Ultimates in this. though still, Ultimate Cap isn't that cocky from what i've read but i admit i haven't read much of it. now i hate to bring up the whole 'did you see sunshine blah blah' but i don't remember seeing Evans make jokes... but it's been a while so i might be wrong about that. i remember him being serious. anyway, back to Cap. for someone who pines to fight in the war but can't...then gets his wish fulfilled by a grandfatherly-like tommy lee jones, i just can't see him getting all that cocky as that would make the audience dislike the character. i remember reading that one of the themes for the film will be 'fitting in', meaning that Cap has never fit in as a weakling, and once he gets super-soldiered-up, he still can't fit in as he's such a badass and is in a league of his own. he is constantly trying to fit in amongst his peers... and so that's why i think he won't be a cocky personality type in the film. i'm guessing he'll be, live Dave I says, a type of straight man for Stark... dr drew and corolla or Dean and Martin or whatever pairing you like... Stark will be the smartass, Cap will be the straight man. they'll be discussing plans on how to handle the Skrull invasion (or whatever the threat is in the film) and Cap will be giving some awesome insight in a militaristic fashion, Stark will joke around and still add some keen Stark genius insight. then it's off to kick some ass Avengers style. i think it's gonna work very well.

What's the big deal? He isn't involved in a competitive sport - he is a soldier and involved in a war. Survival is paramount not trying to make sure there is a level playing field.
I know this wasn't Fareal intent, he was just trying to be funny, but it reminds me that we have to seriously get over this obsession that performance enhancing drugs are somehow always bad.

FYI--not that it matters, but Tucci was married from 1995 to 2009 to his wife, Kate and had 3 kids with her. She died of breast cancer in 2009. Now, I know plenty of gay men used marry hetero to hide it, but I don't think much of that really goes on any more in Hollywood, and certainly most of them don't go fathering 3 kids in 7 years (the kids were all born by 2002).

Spacey, on the other hadn, took his mom to the Oscars, owns a house on Fire Island and, to my knowledge, has never even been romantically linked to a woman.
