LORD OF THE RINGS: Casting.... Viggo is in!

Published at:  Oct 15, 1999 2:47:18 PM CDT

Alright folks, here we go. I just got this absolutely 100% confirmed. Viggo Mortensen has been cast and is on board as Aragorn. I noticed quite a few people out there in Talk Back last time that didn't seem too pleased with the big vig, but if you haven't seen his Navy Seal from G.I. JANE... Then just hush. Viggo hasn't had much luck landing the great 'make ya or break ya' role... until now. This is the part where we see Viggo succeed. I'm excited. No more speculation... He's in.

As for the why... in Stuart Townsend's departure from the film, apparently Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh decided that he just wasn't going to work out for the character. Or at least that's the story I'm hearing. Man... there has been 4 days of shooting already. Hee hee hee.... 'Frodo of the nine fingers, and the ring of doom.... how did he get nine fingers and where is the ring of doom?'

    Viggo

Hm. Heard a rumor about DDL, I wouldve liked that, but oh well. Hope he can pull it off, he looks a little goofy to me. Only time will tell . . .

    by iaidoka

At least he looks older than Tonwsend. He could be quite believeable in the role agewise methinks. As to his acting, guess we'll have to wait and see yes?

    Viggo "can do it!"

    by greybeard

When I told my wife and two teenage daughters that Viggo could be the new Aragorn, I was greeted with an overwhelming positive response. We have all seen G.I. Jane--he has the right look and he can play the part.

    This Sucks

    by farmer cotton

Well. This really takes a load off my mind. Now I know for sure that the movie is going to suck. There had to be some Scotsman, Irishman, Welshman or Englishman who could have been cast in this role? Why goofball Viggo? It just doesn't make any sense. I know I'm going to get a bunch of pissy remarks from people about the whole accent issue, but Aragorn HAS TO SPEAK WITH A BRITISH ACCENT!!! And I seriously doubt Viggo can pull it off. How many American actors have actually pulled off a decent British accent? What's more, Viggo looks a hell of a lot like Sean Bean. Man, this really really blows. Peter Jackson is a idiot.

    its ok i guess

    by jedi quinner

Well he certainly looks the part(although wouldn' he be better as boromir and then Sean Bean could be Aragorn) but i haven't seen anything he's in.what i,m saying is it dosn't bother me either way. i'll trust PJs judgment on this-he has after all made some pretty cool casting decsions in the past.

    He won't...

    by a_rick

...nor will any of the actors from what I've seen. Now, if the screenplay puts them in unnatural situations and gives them shoddy lines, that's a different story!
I guess the accent would be my only worry.

    To answer a question above:
Number of Americans to successfully pull off British accent: 1034

    This is documented.

    Viggo...Why?

    by farmer cotton

Duhhh...I mean, Peter Jackson is AN idiot.

I want to know the truth why he fired Townsend. What kind of an incompetent director hires an actor for the lead in a major motion picture after months of casting, then decides to shit-can the guy three days after principle shooting begins? It's outrageous!

Now that Viggo has arrived, where's BOWIE?

    by bregalad_

Okay, okay. I was one of the biggest naysayers yesterday about Viggo "the Dansk". Harry, I've see him in G.I. JANE, and in PERFECT MURDER, etc. You know, I can give him credit for being a big, muscly, somewhat brooding looking actor.... but has he got the chops for Aragorn? I will sit down and shut up about it, all we can do is wait n' see. He's still TOO BLOODY YOUNG. And on to a more important thing: PLEASE CAST DAVID BOWIE AS ELROND. I can't assert myself strongly enough on this, P.J. In all of the history of Rock n' Roll there have only been two true "rock n' roll stars". The first was Elvis Presley. The last is David Bowie. There will never be any more. I promise with my living breath that the Thin White Duke will inhabit the role of Elrond like no other living creature who ever fell to Earth. Trust me.

    It happens

    by a_rick

Somebody on one the boards today mentioned that this sort of thing happens -- until scenes start to come together, you don't know how the actor(s) will work.
Anyway, it sounded like New Line wanted the change. I'm sure they have a bit of influence.
BTW, I perfected my British accent just now, so add another American to the tally.

    by bregalad_

Oh, and Harry, THANK YOU so much for that splendid "Frodo of the 9 Fingers" lyric. Omigod! I'm having a Rankin/Bass flashback!!! AAAAAA!!! Now I can't get Glenn's voice out of my head! "Roads go ever, ever on. Over rock and under tree..." Oh, no, dear heavens, it's getting worse! Now I'm going to end up singing "Where there's a whip, there's a way!" all frickin' day..... Thanks a whole lot, Harry. "We don't wanna go to war today, but the lord of the lash says 'NAY, NAY, NAY!" :-P

    by greenleaf

I apologize if you've all seen this before, but... no! This is not astyanax (but I bet he'll be turning in soon). I posted something that I cannot leave unsaid in the other talkback, but now it'll never be read, so I repost it here. Here viggo. "I've just realized I've made a terrible mistake. And I've got to apologize, I must, because it concerns Harry. I have never said shit about Harry and I don't wish to start now. In my last post, where I revisited the song of the Prancing Pony by following Tolkien's writing while changing the words (just to look back at our last days of talkback), I inadvertantly left the word 'pranced' standing, and it referred to Father Geek. Next line was 'And good Harry boy chased his tail'... or something like that... err.... What I meant was that Father Geek was getting all upset about the talkbacker(s) (definitely not 'prancing'), and Harry was checking on him to keep him from banning and stuff. The words 'good' and 'boy' were merely put in to fill the line. Turns out they create a whole new meaning. I'm French, so playing with English can be hazardous. There was no sexual reference at all in my post, and I apologize to Harry and everyone if it seemed otherwise. And I apologize also for this apology." Thank you all for bearing with this shameful display. If you don't know what I'm talking about, good. -+-+-+- The decisive factor with this Viggo, for me, is definitely whether he can be Elessar Telcontar or not. Now I've heard people saying he can pull it off, while I've heard others saying he'll always look like a slime ball. Harry liked Stuart Townsend, and he also likes Viggo Mortensen. This is confusing. And also: I remember Deluca saying that PJ fought with the studios to get Townsend in. Now that same goodfella, Deluca, says it is PJ and Fran's idea to kick him out. These things happen, yes, but that's a great change of mind. No doubt there is more to this than meets our informers. Now... can you see Viggo hangin' out with Liv Tyler? It puts a different spin on things. Now, let's just see where my post will appear, so it can make even less sense than it already does.

I dont know what to think....

    by tolkienfan

I just got done with my mid-terms and I was hoping to come back and hear some good news. Well I dont really knwo if this is good news or bad news! I have seen G.I. Jane and I have seen a perfect murder. I thought Viggo's performance was mediocre, it wasnt the best acting I have seen. I read the books last year and I read them once more during the summer and visualized what this character would actually look like. Viggo never occured to me. I was definitely happy with Townsend but I guess things happen and we (the public) do not have the means to controll it. Maybe Peter saw something in him that we havent seen. Maybe Viggo Has just been hungering for a part that he will love. Vigo... I hope you love this part. I welcome you but please realize that this isnt just another part, this is the part of a lifetime.
Oh yea another thing. I read on the onering.net that Elijah has never read LOTR. I hope he has taken the time to read them

    Elijah Wood and LotR

    by greenleaf

Apparently New Line believes that reading the book is not necessary for Elijah Wood to play Frodo accurately. No matter how the scripts retain of 'Tolkien's style' (Pj often talks about it, but never describes it), reading the book is an irreplaceable experience. If all Elijah has read was the script, all he knows about his character is what he says and does. There are many other aspects to Frodo in what is said of him through narration, and through what Frodo thinks and feels. And through what Sam thinks of him (especially in Mordor). Now this can't be all in the script. Wood must also understand what his part is in the whole scheme of things. 'My character has a wry sense of humor', says he. 'Hobbits have big, hairy feet.' True enough. I hope that's not all there is to your Frodo. Hopefully Peter will direct Elijah towards the complex, disquieting figure of Frodo we know and love.

    Viggo and accents

    by alpha

If youv'e seen Potrait of A Lady you can see him doing accents. He's pretty good. I'm actually glad he looks a little like Sean Bean as Boromir and Aragorn are from similar ancient bloodlines which have passed down through generations. Hopefully he will do a good job

    Take a deep breath...and *breathe*

    by terminus est

Yes, the name "Viggo" is hardly one to inspire confidence (btw, it's Danish, not Italian, as some have suggested). Nevertheless, his was the only performance in THE PROPHECY of any interest (sorry, Mr. Walken), and I think he has the right kind of "weathered" look about him -- "looks foul and feels fair," as it were. Part of the prob may be Harry's choice of photos. There's a much better pic of Viggo at http://www.chud.com/tolkien/.
Check it out before any further aspersions are cast in PJ's melancholy Dane's direction. ;-)

    by corblimey

Well, I suppose you've got to admire DDL for his principles even if they are a bit daft, but then again, he's an actor. Viggo...daft name, but then again, he's an actor. I've never seen him before but he looks the right age...as if my opinion counts to PJ+team. He's also looks..er...weathered. But don't flame PJ, he's a genius...he's got a beard.

    News Item

    by powerslave

(AP) The saga that surrounds the filming of the epic 'Lord of the Rings' trilogy, which only recently got underway, has claimed its first group of victims. Superstar Mel Gibson, star of the popular 'Lethal Weapon' films and Oscar-winning director, acclaimed young actor Edward Norton, currently on movie screens everywhere in 'Fight Club,' and heavy metal artist Glenn Danzig, all of whom were widely rumored to play the role of Armagorn in the eagerly awaited films, were found dead in Hollywood this morning, the apparent victims of a suicide pact. Details are sketchy at this point, but it is believed that the three performers killed themselves late last night, upon hearing that Viggo Mortensen had landed the coveted role. Gibson, Norton, and Danzig were found by a custodian at Icon Films' head offices, Gibson's production company. "It was the damnedest thing I ever saw," says the custodian, who didn't want his name revealed," there they were, each of 'em clutching a volume of those 'Ring' books." Apparently, all three actors were doubly despondent, having been passed over for the role of Wolverine in the film 'X-Men' as well. The impact of these deaths is likely to send shockwaves through the Internet community, where the works of J.R.R. Tolkien have a passionate - some say rabid - following. "This definitely sucks day-old douche juice." said Harry Knowles, creator of the popular Aint-it-cool-news website, a popular gathering place for 'Rings' fans. "I think Viggo will seriously rock as Aragorn," Knowles continued, "but I don't think the fans will take it too well. I'm really worried about copy-cat suicides."

    Mr Mortenson. Hmmm...

    by offa

So Viggo is in. You know, I'm just not sure about him at all. He looks too much like a Schwarzenegger 'action hero' type to me - not noble Aragorn at all. He may be a brilliant actor, but so is Kevin Spacey (for example) and he would be crap as Aragorn. I would have gone for Chris Eccleston (Jude, Elizabeth) myself. As for Sam Neill - Merlin was the biggest load of tripe I've seen in a long time. If you think Sam could hold a candle to Nicol Williamson in that role you clearly haven't seen 'Excalibur'. And those pictures of Bree that I've seen about the place - couldn't they think of something a bit more original than the old Tudor half-timbered stuff? It all seems a bit twee and obvious to me. Don't get me wrong - I really really want LOTR to be brilliant - but the ghost of Ralph Bakhshi is looming....

Harry, change that UGLY b/w picture

    by anais

Please Harry, change the picture, so fellow fans can stop foaming at the mouth with rage and agony! If you would only put in something less revulting than that, it'll be a blessing. Viggo is not that ugly. Though he's not my first choice, he is a major improvement over that Townsend boy. Viggo's aged, weathered, and somewhat handsome (IN THE RIGHT PICTURE). Even though I still think he's sleazy. My first choices will always be Bean and DDL! Fellow fans should stop spitting on Viggo and start crying over Arwen the warrior princess. All the more reason to hate Liv!

    American vs. British

    by elwe singollo

Hasn't anybody noticed that the good guys always come from "the West"? It was Tolkien's way of saying thanks to us Yanks for saving Europe's bacon one more time. In light of this, an American accent is absolutely acceptable. And don't give me any of your superior Brit bologna; you people still believe in your ridiculous monarchy, at least we are realists!!!!!( runs, hides, looking out for squalls)********And as for you MorGoth.......... set me up with another round of that Utumno Stout; if DD-L won't take the part, I'll just sit here and get drunk. Viggo in WITNESS

    by skylewalker

Hey- Now I remember where I saw VIGGO. He was the Blonde haired Quaker that was attempting to court Kelly McGillis in WITNESS. Damn that Harrison Ford for stealing her from him. Anyway, he was actually pretty cool in this movie, and I liked him in Carlito's Way. Personally, I think he'll do a lot better job than Townsend anyway. Plus, the whole Mediterranean look of his is very brooding and hints to some hidden, deep emotion. My only complaint is that Shitty picture Harry keeps using.
