Hawkeye In THE AVENGERS Is...
Merrick here...
Looks like Jeremy Renner (THE HURT LOCKER, THE ASSASSINATION OF JESSE JAMES, 28 WEEKS LATER) will play Hawkeye/Clint Barton in the slowly gathering steam AVENGERS movie. This confirms months old (but wobbly) rumors that Jeremy might be taking that role, probably for that particular film.
Renner will play the bow-and-arrow-carrying hero Hawkeye, who, while not one of the initial members of the team when it was created in the 1960s, became an integral member soon after when the misguided villain switched sides.
[EDIT]
Renner will join Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man/Tony Stark, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Chris Evans as Captain America, Scarlett Johansson as the Black Widow, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Don Cheadle as War Machine.
...says THR HERE.
Once swept up in the French and Indian War in Colonial America (1754-1763), Hawkeye went on to serve as a doctor with Mobile Army Surgical Hospital #4077 in the Korean Conflict (1950-1953) before debuting as a Marvel comic book character in 1964.

How many are they gonna have? Anyway, they should cast Doogie Howser as Hank Pym.
-
The Avengers? Why? It's too much.
-
This film already has too many characters, so why not just stick in a Green Arrow copy that only fanboys know anything about?!
-
That film was looking crowded already. Iron Man 2 was really dissapointing and I'm still very nervous about Whedon.Let's just say The Avengers is becoming less and less of a geekgasm and more and more likely to be a trainwreck of BP proportions.
-
It won't be too many characters if they do it right. Think Dirty Dozen, Magnificent Seven, Ocean's 11, etc.
-
I love that old show.
-
But a trip to the ophthalmologist changed all that!
-
Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America, and Thor. Keep it simple, not goofy. (Yes, they are mutually exclusive when it comes to a comic book movie.)
-
Or a film-making paradigm shift. How much clashing spandex can the movie going public really handle?
Red and and blue and red and gold and black and silver and black and red and purple and blue... It's going to look like some kind of drag queen competition. -
...that I hope gets the Ultimates treament.Vintage Hawkeye costume is gaaaaay!
-
...with Fox???
-
if each character gets say 20 mins screentime you looking at a 2 hour movie before you add story villans, sidekicks, misplaced pop culture references.....
-
I like.
-
all envision what Hawkeye's will look like. I'm not even going to describe it but the picture in my head right now is, I know, 99% accurate as to what the final product will be.
-
its gonna have to be one bad mofo to beat all of thes supers unless they go for multiple villians and THEN your getting seriously squeezed for time. and yeah what the hell happened to the hulk being in it? seems mighty quiet on that front. shame I liked Ed Nortons Hulk.
-
What's the "H" stand for? Homo? Get rid of letters on superhero's foreheads! It looks stupid and makes them easier targets. You don't see Batman or Spider-Man with a "B" or an "S" on their foreheads do you? And somehow they still look cool.
-
now i'm a little more excited for this film. i think the cast will be solid at least. and kudos to aicn for not posting another sex and the city article
-
Really, who would use a bow and arrow when you can get explosive or incindiary rounds for sniper rifles in the real world? Would you rather get shot by one trick arrow, a .50 caliber trick sniper round in the head, or a few dozen trick assault rifle rounds?
-
they've assembled twenty odd heroes, they're going to need a fucking good plot and a FUCKING amazing villain to balance this out.

Renner's a solid actor. Looking forward to what he brings to an already diverse cast.
-
from the Green Archer of the pulps and serials.
-
Hasn't this been stated at some point? After all, the first Avengers story was about stopping a Hulk rampage and let's not forget that Tony Stark goes to General Ross at the end of Incredible Hulk.
-
I went and saw Iron Man 2 the other day and can't remember a thing about it. Superhero's are done I'm afraid. I'm sorry, when I think of an 'Avengers' movie I have to laugh cuz it'll be Iron Man 2 on steroids.
-
and reading the promos that the studio are putting out. it sounds like Iron Man is going to have a smaller role than War Machine.
-
...all credibility of superhero movies is gonna swirl right down the shitter.

Jesus Christ! If they pull Hawkeye off I'll be stoked
by nomoredirtyjokespleaseweareyanks
Being a Robin Hood nut, he was always one of my favorite comic books. It's beginning to sound crowded but I think Whedon might be the one to pull it off. As long as he takes his goddamn time. Don't rush it dude. Don't let it become another Alien Resurrection

If Hulk is the villain, my expectations just jumped higher.
by royston lodge
I've been pretty pessimistic about the prospects of an Avengers movie not degenerating into a boatload of cheese.
But if Hulk is the villain, and they go balls-out with that concept, I can see something pretty special coming out of it.
I'm still pessimistic though, cuz I doubt they'd really go as far with the concept as they should. They'll wuss out, cop out, and back off from the potential awesomeness out of fear of alienating too much of the audience. -
There are a few similar elements, but the Green Archer stories and characters are hardly similar to anything Oliver Queen related. Both were popular in the 40's
My point was Marvel don't tend to look any further than DC for their inspiration -
rev_skarekroe mate you are totally right a huge marvel movie with such a roster of talent and characters is great, great examples of oceans 11 etc but also think lord of the rings! star wars! all had large casts of big characters Also potentially 4 of the main characters (cap thor iron man and if he is in it hulk)and a handful of supporting roles will have all appeared in erlier films so there is plenty info on their backstories before this even starts meaning it can get straight into a huge avengers action moveie! This (if done right) could be a brilliant film, the type comic fans have waitied for years for. Im shocked to see how much hate goes around towards this when this is surely the type of film that every fanboy and geek has wished for. Come on man AICN and its loyal following live for this kind of stuff!!!!!!!
-
...such an egomaniacal narcissist. I cannot see DowneyStark as a team-player, taking orders from Chris Evans.
But I can picture a good soldier like CheadleRhodes getting with the program. -

I'm more interested in getting Ant-Man into the movie
by bettercallsaul
the wasp, and maybe black panther. a green arrow clone looks ghey
-
Maybe for a 20 minute opener of the movie, but the Marvel movies already suffer from one-dimensional villains. Hulk is like... 0-dimensional.
-
If they're having Hawkeye they gotta have Ant-Man.
-
I was really looking forward to seeing Ed Norton's Bruce Banner/Hulk in this. I hope the rumors about Hulk as the villain are true. Otherwise I think they are going to have a hard time coming up with a threat to justify ALL of these Avengers!
-
do they really need to be in this movie?
-
That would be REALLY, REALLY great!
-
Although they got a good actor to play Hawkeye, it could amount to a cameo. Remember when everyone was moist about seeing Hank McCoy on TV in the first X-men? Could be the same thing. I'm sure that, unless Hawkeye gets his own movie (soon,) That Thor, Cap, Iron Man and the Hulk are going to be your leads. If any "new" main character is going to be introduced, I'd expect Ant Man, maybe Wasp (just to have another hot woman) or the "real" villain, once they find out that the Hulk isn't really all that bad. (please Ultron!)
-
Make it happen.
-
someone is controlling the Hulk and they'll be the main villain.
Hulk in the movies when he Hulks out isn't bad. He just destroy's shit because the Army is always up his ass and won't leave him alone.
AVENGERS PLOT:
Hulk starts attacking civilian and military target without provocation.
A team is needed to deal with this.
Avengers assemble. Fight Hulk. Find out he's being controlled by something. Maybe Ant-Man goes in his ear and finds a tiny transmitter.
Real villain emerges.
Hulk helps save the day at the end, joins the Avengers.
Scene after credits sets up sequel. -
A lame rip off of Green Arrow?
-
is that he carries a finite amount of arrows. So, in a big battle sequence, he pops off a dozen arrows and calls Jarvis to bring the limo around. Sure, in the comic books, you can believe that his quiver magically has an infinite number of arrows, but that won't fly in a live action movie.

Little surprised to not see Ed nortan's name in there
by redbull_werewolf
either hulk will not be in it, or Nortan threw one of his hissy fits and we won't see bruce banner in the avengers, just the cgi hulk and therefore no need to credit Nortan in the castIf Nortan is being a bitch, please don't recast bruce, just always have him as the hulk...and make him intellegent and a good guy, none of this hulk is the villan bullshit
-
But I'm not convinced that Hollywood could do the character justice. Hell, since the 70's so many comic creators have destroyed the character through bad interpretations that I honestly have no idea what Hollywood would even do with him. He used to be fairly simple... an artificial man like Bishop from "Aliens" with repressed emotions and a tendency for them to boil over to the point that he'd beat the holy shit out of villains now and again and have a mutual swoon-fest with the Scarlet Witch. Then in the 80's John Byrne literally and figuratively took his balls from him, and made him some lame clone of Data from Star Trek, complete with being a full on robot instead of made of synthetic organs and such. I should probably hope for the comics to do the character justice again before Hollywood ever takes a crack at him.
-
. . . that's a bad ass enough opponent for all of them. I wouldn't mind seeing the Leader as the man behind the curtain at first. What's his name started turning into him at the end of Norton Hulk. They shouldn't add the Skrulls at first. Too much.
-
In some ways I agree, but in other ways I do not.
Firstly, when it comes to characters' powers, in many cases you are spot-on. This is most evident with characters like Hawkeye, Quicksilver, Mr. Fantastic, Ant-Man, etc.
But the characters that are most clearly DC rip-offs are mostly relatively minor characters. The major Marvel characters (Spiderman, Hulk, Captain America, Thor, X-Men, Daredevil, etc) are not carbon-copies of DC characters.
The best illustration would be the "Amalgam" crossover from a few years back. Some of the match-ups were really easy, because the characters were so similar.
But other match-ups weren't nearly so obvious. I don't consider Superman and Hulk to be doppelgangers, but that was the match-up. I don't consider Batman and Captain America to be doppelgangers, but that was the match-up. Wonder Woman vs. Storm? Spiderman vs. Superboy? The list goes on.
Secondly, when it comes to the personalities and the characterizations I don't think it's necessarily true at all that Marvel simply copies DC.
The personalities and back-stories for SO many Marvel characters were way more fleshed out from the very beginning than most of the DC characters. DC added extra dimensions to their characters later on, but that was rarely how they started out. Most of them were conceived as simple "strong-men beating up bad guys."
Way more Marvel characters had inconvenient private lives and/or moral dilemmas they had to deal with.
- Spiderman always had his teenage angst, his romantic entanglements, his flaws and his failures, etc.
- The X-Men always had the subtext of racism and xenophobia.
- Hulk was always an anti-hero who couldn't really control his own power.
- Hawkeye and Mockingbird had their marital problems.
- Alpha Flight had to deal with being tools of a corrupt government.
- Tony Stark had his alcoholism.
- Even minor characters like Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch had their sibling rivalry.
In contrast, the big DC characters like Superman, Batman, Flash, Green Lantern, Green Arrow, Wonder Woman, etc, didn't get any interesting personal stuff until way later in their careers. Like, when Supes married Lois, or Batman after Jason Todd died, or Green Arrow after he became a socialist, or Flash after he went public with his secret identity, etc.
In short, I think the "Marvel just copies DC" meme only goes so far, and only applies to a minority of Marvel's characters. -
Rambo!
-
. . . nobody's said how much screentime he'll have. He could be a newer guy, that doesn't get into the field right away.

I was talking to my friend about this casting news and I found out that Jeremy Renner is actually his brother in law. This is a fact that he somehow neglected to tell me in the years we have been friends.
-
it will be a twist at the end of the movie, sorry if I ruined it for anyone
-
And no, killing the hero isn't enough of a plot. Both Iron Man movies and the Hulk end with a big fight for the sake of a fight. There's nothing more at stake, no larger villainous goals to thwart. The Iron Man vs. Terrorists stuff in the middle of the first movie is much more engaging because we *really* want to see the hero prevail, take those bastards down and rescue the hostages. It's not a situation that exists solely because the villain is trying to draw the hero out into a fight... it feels like the hero is actually doing some good.
-
That's from the very first Avengers comic book.
-
why is aicn always so damn late wit their news? either way, i think thats a bit of badass casting myself
-
I haven't been on here recently due to life getting in the way, but I saw a talkback and comment and had to say something. Harry is producing a doc on SDCC and looking for subjects, to which you replied you would do... but only if you got a shot at a big budget blockbuster. Do you realize how ridiculous that sounds? Giving demands when in no place to give demands? Look, you've been posting here for almost a decade, I reckon. A decade. How close are you to your dream? Is it not worth it? Are you not that talented? You boast of your creativity... where is it? A creative person would have written dozens of scripts and filmed dozens of shorts by now. You offer your services to Hollywood. Studios hire doers, not dreamers. And not off of Internet forums not half as influential as they used to be. I cringed when Mr Miracle and kintar0 used to rip on you because clearly you are filled with childlike wonder and dreams... but that gets you nowhere. This is a challenge, JDP. Even MediaMessiah eventually posted something he wrote on here. It sucked, but he did it. And he's a 1000x closer to making it than you are because of it. Don't come back here without a script. Two of them. My own screenwriting professor says studios will not touch an unknown without something completed. Not "if they'd buy it I'd write it.". Again, you're nobody. Can't make demands. Write scripts... based on your OWN ideas, not corporate properties you don't own. Film YouTube shorts. You have the materials. Sam Raimi just hired a guy off of YouTube. That could've been you. I'm not a hater. I'm Reality. Get at it.
-
Had Batman, Joker, Two-Face, Gordon, Lucious Fox, Alfred, Scarecrow, Maroni, Gamble and Love Interest.
Avengers will be O.K.
Probably not much room for Love Interest though, but there never is in men on mission movies. -
If it manages the screen time off each character just right it would kick ass, but it's a big ask...
-
the biggest move of all time, or the gayest/cheesiest movie of all time take your pick based on IM2 and robert d j. batman and robin looms large
-
Having another "normal" on the team would work to get that dynamic.
-
It goes both ways. DC may have gotten to define the archtypes first, but they borrowed liberally from Marvel in terms of humanizing and modernizing their characters. And on a tangent, I love the massive number of nods that the Dini/Timm DC animated universe makes towards Marvel as an acknowledgment to their applying Marvel characterization to DC characters. There are multiple instances of them composing shots that directly mirror famous Marvel covers and panels. (This was especially evident in Batman Beyond, which was naturally a thinly veiled cross between Batman and Spider-man.)
-
May I just say that was a wonderful retort, so rare to get something quite so concise and well spelt!!!
Maybe you're right, but I suppose I mainly meant Green Arrow in this case, maybe my statement was a bit overblown -

yeah but TDK was directed by nolan, avengers by Whedon
by redbull_werewolf
I'm a fan of firefly and dollhouse (hated buffy and angel) but whedon is not a great movie director, he's done one film and it was based of his TV show, serenity while good coasted along on its fan base as well as the fact that it could feel like a TV movie and that was ok. Why he was given avengers is beyond me, dumpy mc fart face is not a good director

that's interesting.. did u have proof? i work with somebody who is best friends with a girl whose uncle is.. wait for it.. wes craven
-
can't stand Whedon. But I like Glee and he didn't fuck that episode up too bad, pretty nervous about him directing Avengers though.
Hopefully the script was good and he didn't have to drop too many Whedonisms on it, and if they do, the editor can cut them out if they are shit.
I am happy Favreau is producing. -
..was one of the best things in Ultimates Volume 2.
And that's saying something, since so much of Ultimates V2 was so awesome.
And oh yes indeedy, Ultimate Hawkeye was fond of using guns. I still get chills thinking of that scene - Hawekeye escapes the torture session by stabbing and strangling his tormentors, then picks up a couple of assault rifles and walks up to the camera observing him (with a room full of dudes on the other end watching him), and says in a teeth-grinding rage-filled whisper, "Run." -
Replace him with one of the new Avengers like Wolverine (Cast a new guy) or Spiderman.
-
I've always been a DC guy so maybe i'm biased, but alot of marvel characters are just rip offs of DC characters. I still enjoy marvel films, but Marvel is like Mott the hoople to DC's Rolling stones
-
Heh heh heh ...

I would rather joe Johnson was incharge instead of whedon
by redbull_werewolf
Johnson's not a great director either but at least he knows how to handle a big film, whedon will probabaly just cast nathon fillion and summer Glau in roles and have plenty of jokes to fill the gap between closely shot TV style action. I know marvel is trying to save money and do what they think will "please" fanboys, but they really should have hired a more established director for this one. But is uppose the marvel films are like the Bond films, they just hire someone to do what the producers say, the director isn't allowed to bring anything of his own to the films
-
The other day I watched Planet Hulk on blu-ray and it had an Astonishing X-Men motion comic on the special features, so I started to watch it.
Shortly after my girlfriend came home and sat down next to me and she wasn't really paying attention to the comic (just Facebooking or Texting on her Droid or something) but Emma Frost was dressed like her whoring self and getting ready to make a speach, and Kitty Pryde showed up late and Emma said something like "Glad You Could Join us, did you get lost", and Kitty said something like "I guess I was just busy remembering to wear clothes."
And I noticed that what barely registered as a joke to me, made my girlfriend who was hardly paying attention laugh out loud.
So yeah, I'm worried. -
Give us the smart-ass purple Hawkeye, please! Not some random jackass in a black leather X-men-movie jumpsuit, sporting guns! That's a totally different character! Sounds more like Dolph's Punisher to me!
-
Most of marvels characters are all emo bitches that are more concerned about the "look at me" mentality then of actually being a hero, DC's characters can be said to be more like gods but thats what makes them interesting they have these abilities and they are made to be heroes. DC is just a more epic world
-
Apart from the fact that all marvel comics look like they were drawn by a 5 year old. And almost all of DC's current line up looks like a work of art every issue.
-
wow that's nuts. renner is in best movie of the year and the guy is just now sharing this news with u? hmm kinda reminds me of aicn
-
i'm not talkin about the current quality of art. i'm talkin about the history of characters. i think marvel has better characters. comic artists come and go
-
Huge fan of this guy. I even loved him in SWAT. Shit movie, but he was miles above everyone else. So glad when he blew up after Hurt Locker. I really like him as actor a whole hell of a lot
-
After seeing ironman 2 i had a crush like an empty soda can on herShe's as hot as AC DC, she gets my thunderstruck
-
okay and who are u basing this off of? superman? that's the only one i can think of off the top of my head. and superman bores the shit out of me. i like more relatable heros not gods. that's what makes them heros. they can overcome their human flaws
-
I'll get a lot of hate for this, but I still haven't even seen the Hurt Locker yet.
My friend did tell me that when he was coming back from one of his deployments (we're both in the military), he was talking with Jeremy and Jeremy was talking about how he just got back from "Doing a film in Jordan and it was fucking hot." He didn't say what film it was at the time and it wasn't until my friend saw the Hurt Locker that he made the connection. -
Who can do a Gould impression?
-
The quality of the writing and the artistry from both companies has gone up and down over the years. I think it's a stretch to say either company has been CONSISTENTLY superior in the artwork department over the decades.
A lot of early-80s Batman is just as silly and pulpy as the 60s TV show. Batman didn't start to get REALLY good until much later.
If my memory is correct, Marvel started using better inks and better paper before DC did. When DC did start improving the quality of production, they only did it with SOME titles (the famous "Prestige Format").
Marvel's had more than its fair share of superstar artists and writers. Frank Miller on Daredevil. Todd McFarlane on Spiderman. Etc.
Similarly, both companies have had books that look like shit with writing from a Choose Your Own Adventure book. (Some of the Wally West-era Flash stories makes me want to poke my eyes out.)
And they've both had terrible "Epic Crossover Events" that have fucked both universes up and turned hordes of fans away from comics entirely. (I bet most fanboys who stop reading comics quit because of some crossover Event or another and just got fed up.)
Quality goes up and down for both companies. I've been a "Marvel Guy" some years and a "DC Guy" other years. The quality depends on way too many variables for me to commit to one or the other. -
i don't think anybody was getting personal but i agree with u. i'm a fan of dc too. just not as much as marvel
-
As the main threat in Avengers. Something they had to band together to defeat cause no one could understand how. They should let the writers of the Tv show Supernatural take a shot at the script. Those guys understand how to build a mythology and stay true to it.
-
ur not missin out on much for not havin seen the hurt locker. especially if u've experienced the military first hand. the hurt locker was good but not best movie of the year material. renner was awesome in it tho. i've heard the movie itself isn't even as accurate a depiction as it pretends to be. i guess i can see how ur friend didn't jump to bragging about knowing renner. he is just now kinda startin to blow up. i can't even think of what else i saw him in before hurt locker
-
Both companies have their "god" characters. Silver Surfer could wink Superman out of existence and then eliminate the entire Skrull armada for an encore, all before breakfast.
The difference is that Supes is based in a city and Silver Surfer is based in outer space.
It's all context. I really like reading standalone Superman stories, but couldn't get into following the series on a regular basis. Batman, on the other hand, I was addicted to month-in-and-month-out. On the Marvel side, Captain America always bored me, I never really got into Spiderman, but I loved the West Coast Avengers, Iron Man, and Silver Surfer.
Each title and character appeals to different people for different reasons. If you put up any criteria for why one character "rules", I bet you I can cite another character that meets the exact same criteria, yet is a "sucky" character. And vice-versa. -
i think creatively tho marvel has a much better more vast character variety overall. i do see what ur saying tho. i'm not a big fan of silver surfer nor captain america either. i've always been more into the x-men, spider-man, hulk, and iron man. i do love me some batman tho. in fact when i was a kid i think i was more geared towards superman bcuz he was basically invincible. but now i can relate to the more grounded superheros marvel has to offer

JEREMY RENNER GOOD ACTOR, BAD PHYSICAL MATCH FOR HAWKEYE.
by pitchperfect
He's been pretty good in the movies I've seen him in, but he just doesn't stand out as Clint Barton /Hawkeye to me. They've aways drawn that character with sculpted facial features, but Mr. Renner has a weak chin thing going on and a fat potato nose. If they give him a mask he's going to look like the male equivelant of Butterface.
-
haha fat potato nose.. the whole looks not exactly matching thing is true. but i think he's got a good personality for the role. it's hard to find both
-
From the minute I heard this rumor, I had the same feeling when they announced Downey as Iron Man: "why the FUCK didn't I think of that??" I was rewatching the Incredible Hulk and it suffers from IM 2's problem, lack of consistency and structure, but it is just as fun to watch despite it's flaws. Marvel really doesn't fail to impress as a movie studio; once more, brava.
-
He should bring his A game to this. I'm not a fan of seeing the avengers basically being a launching point for new characters but i do get a little giddy when i hear of a new character that will show upI would much rather have marvel push back avengers to 2015 or so and have them focus on solo movies for the nest 4 years, then i think having all the heroes team up would be more satisfactory
-
A 3 hour epic movie so they can give enough time for all of these characters
-
I can see it now...
-
don't u think patrick wilson would play a good superman? he's got the look and can play a solid dork just look at watchmen if u don't believe me. perfect clark kent in that movie. plus he seems like an all around good guy
-
that should prevent him from playing Superman
-
yea not like it'd ever happen anyway. i was just bein hypothetical. i forgot superman isn't allowed to have any flaws.. except kryptonite. receding hairline? no

Captain America's cowl/helmet must have wings, so Hawkeye can call him "winghead."

but he's also got billboard forehead, Ragedy Ann cheek bones, papercut nose and souless dog eyes...these thing will also prevent him from playing superman

i'd be down for some tiny metallic wings.. it would complete the look

haha i thought those things we're necessary to play superman these days?

I would totally be okay with the Leader scenario.. I was wondering when someone was going to mention that, it was pretty obvious at that point of the movie that Leader would show up sometime, as well as the cameo at the end of the credits that people somehow forgot. I thought Hulk was a sure thing? I'd be pretty upset if this were not the case, I was really looking forward to seeing Norton and Downey together.
-
That's a pretty big lineup of heroes, especially with them working both War Machine and Iron Man in there. It's going to be very interesting to see how they balance the screen time, especially if Thor should bomb. And it's going to be particularly interesting to see if they go with a bow-armed 'classic' Hawkeye or the Ultimates version. I'm thinking the bow will be a tough sell, but perhaps a few very impressive trick arrows will be cooked up to make it work.
Either way, this one is going to be a big something. But whether that's big success, or big flop, remains very much to be seen. -

So he's either going to play Ant Man or possibly be the new Bruce Banner. I was looking at the upcoming Marvel movies and those are really the only two roles open. And if they're keeping it secret, he must be playing the lead.
-
"You shouldn't have dropped me in the #*%@ing kitchen."
-
Spot on. I stopped reading comics after the Mutant Massacre of '88.
-
WILL HE SHOOT ARROWS WITH BOXING GLOVES ON THEM? I hope so

Where's Josh holloway fit in all this? And...they better bring back the HULK!

-
Made me chuckle.
-
...are Captain America, IronMan and especially Hulk. Ed Norton kicked major ass as Hulk so I'm disappointed at the possibility of him not returning. He really needs to be in this project. I'm sure we'll hear definitive news one way or the other since now things are finally under way for the project. For me the rest of the characters - hawkeye, antman, warmachine...I just hope are decent enough supporting characters.
-
Nothing to do with this piss poor secondary rung purple rip off!
-
Ruining the movie blockbuster. TDK and Spider-man 2 being the only passable superhero movies since Donner/Reeve Superman. All you fucking whacks just LET YOUR CHILDHOODS GO!!! You're not that little boy reading X-Men anymore.
-
I think that Whedon can handle it. He did a fine job with multiple personality fights in Buffy and Angel. Just stay away from a fucking origin for all of 'em. Take for granted that they exist (maybe a nod of the head to where they came from) and just go with it. Fuckin' please no cutsey dialogue.
-
Gotta definitely second this. Robert Downey, Jr. running around taking orders from a buncha twenty-something pretty boys is gonna looked fucked unless they get Norton to balance that shit out. I'm definitely with the Incredible Hulk (Norton's version) love. Disappointed with the box office, but the movie is on heavy rotation around my house. (Doesn't hurt that the missus likes Norton.)
-
Saw somewhere yesterday that he might be included with a cameo to give a jumping off point for the solo movie.
-
No, I'm a big boy reading comics. Been doing so since I was a whipper-snapper. Plan on continuing the trend. 2011 and 2012 are shaping up to be TEH SHIT!
-
who was a rip-off of Robin Hood.

why are u even on this web site?
-
agreed on the baffling box office take on the INCREDIBLE HULK...it was great great fun. It' felt like the director heard us on exactly what was lacking from The 1st HULK, and blammo. The casting was perfect in the 2nd film too, and I hope they throw bags at cash at Edwards(or whatever it takes to make him happy)...we need him!

like a PVC fetishist.
-
to me at least.Hulk 2 had some very cool action scenes and a seriously proper hero vs. villain fight.
-
elements of a good story. it just didn't bring it all home. still fun tho
-
had the one best thing about it(firing on all cylinders):The actors and there charisma.ANd the humor.I enjoy favreau's injection oh humor, and as always...Downey Jr. But that plot...boy oh boy, did it suck.the WHOLE felt like a repeat of the errors in part 1,and the "park model IS THE map to a new element..." story was just redonk.
-
....Josh Holloway probably. I don't see it myself but whatever.

-
...WW2 Sgt Nick Fury.
That's my theory anyway. -
they crammed Tony healing himself, Demon in a Bottle, Armor Wars, War Machine, and the formation of The Avengers all in one short movie. That's why this stuff works better stretched out. Though I enjoyed it, as it's as good as we are going to get. No real visionaries making superhero movies. Justin Theroux really worked hard on the script; he worked in a lot of themes in there. The problem is, the high concept theme detracts from the serialized nature of Marvel.
-
...if Marvel were to wrest the character out of the evil paws of FOX.
-
I was bitterly disappointed that they basically shit on the Demon in a Bottle storyline, but that's Hollywood for ya!
-
This is something AICN should be on top of, not completely neglecting. Sigh.
-
...in two weeks.

dismissed that as rumors...

wishful thinking anyway.

She was a West Coast Avenger along with a shitty version of The Son of Satan.
I guess Caruso could play him. -
I kid. I kid.

you going to report this story this is like the 3rd time you've run this.
-
They barely touched upon Tony's drunkenness in Iron Man 2. He got truly drunk only once in the movie, and it was at his "last" birthday party, after Scarlett told him "I'd do whatever I wanted with whoever I wanted." (which should have involved anal with Scarlett.) There's plenty of Iron Man sequels to have a true "Demon in a bottle" storyline. I'd honestly love to see Tony in The Suit for about 5 minutes of Iron Man 3, and have the rest of it as a film dealing with the troubles his alcoholism caused, and have a film like TDK, where "being a superhero" is secondary to a good dramatic film.
Of course, that would wreck my campaign for Fin Fang Foom in IM3. -
Barf. Renner is awesome and perfect for Hawkeye, though. But why not include Mockingbird, then? Or Wasp or Scarlet Witch or at least one more woman.
Ugh. War Machine. Ugg. -
Gambit. Period.
-
in a later film. if you get too many characters then they are all cardboard and no body gets fleshed out. Cap, Shellhead, Hulk and Thor are plenty with cameos by Nick Fury and BW. Less is more there Marvel. Dont let it become a useless mess like the X-Men films.
-
Now they just need to bring on some Avengers worth actually seeing in a movie. Black Widow? War Machine? Hawkeye? Lame choices for the first real All-Star comic book superhero movie.
Could you imagine if the Justice League movie was going to center around Black Canary, Mister Miracle, Booster Gold, Plastic Man and Steel? LAME! -
Cap doesn't have WINGS ON HIS COSTUME!! I guess there's still Shell-head for Iron Man. Will Hawkeye's costume have leather pants as well Marvel Ent.????
-
Marvel should just do like National Lampoon Vacation series with Rusty and Audrey and cast a different actor as Banner in every movie Hulk in in.
-
I want me a comic book movie set 800 years in the future. With Jensen Ackles as Magnus. Would be awesome.
-
Seeing as how Hawk is a Green Arrow Rip off,(with Purple tights and a minor handicap.) I would suspect that Marvel may have also-ran the ol' Boxing Glove arrow from GA. (I watched the Justice League Unlimted series enough to know that "Ollie" uses the silly pugilistic arrow.)Speaking of Arrow/DC, I think Renner would make a good Guy Gardner as oppossed to Hawkeye.
-
to save the day. I'm betting that's going to be story. Renner is a good choice.

"Good" being the operative word...
-
We've got Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Nick Fury, and possibly War Machine and Black Widow. Do we fucking need ANOTHER superhero in this crowded 2 hour movie? Not just any comic superhero, but one of the lesser known ones.
Now, if Tobey McGuire reprized Spiderman for an Avengers movie, then I'd understand, but this move is just a lame excuse get another Hollywood star into the Avengers movie IMHO. Are they anticipating that the movie will suck so bad that they have to add Jeremy Renner to the cast?
Just restrict it to core members: Captain America, Thor, Hulk, Iron Man, Fury. Like the old adage goes: "too many cooks spoil the broth." -
Or rather, pg-13 superhero movies...same formula time and time again. I'll take Crow(admit it,it is), Spawn, Kick-Ass or the Punisher over Iron Man 2 any day.
-
I'd love if at least part of the film was them capturing the Hulk. That would be a great match-up, and in a way, it would be a rematch. Tim Roth used a variant of the super soldier syrum in "The Incredible Hulk". Now Hulk can go against the real McCoy. :-)
As the Iron Man films have shown, you don't need a lot of Superhero stuff. The whole last 1/3 doesn't have to be mind-numbing noise. You've got great actors cast. The more you let them act, the better the film will be. -
They always use old school bent-stick-and-some-string type bows instead of the lethal, composite bows made out of high tech materials that are available today in any sporting goods store. Hell, an idiot like Ted Nugent is better armed than Hawkeye or Green Arrow.
-
I'll bet you dollars to doughnuts that he's a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, assigned to act as Nick Fury's liaison on the Avengers team.
-
They set up the Mandarin character in Iron Man 1. He would be a perfect character for The Avengers villain.

Oops, wrong talkback.
-
That is, one of the 6 or 7 billion different Avengers teams that are all TOTALLY FUCKING BORING?
-
people are gonna hate this avengers movie
-
Or I still wanted Krasinski for Cap. I think Chris Evans is good but just a bit too unserious and youthful for Steve Rogers. He'd've made a better Hawkeye.
-
I kid! I kid!
-
i'm open to chris evans bein cap. i think he can find the character. renner doesn't look like the noble hero type. more like somebody who likes to do things his own way. and krasinski? he would look goofy as fuck tryin to be captain america
-
I vote for Patrick Wilson for Hank and depending on which version of Jan they use (Caucasian or Asian), either Karen Gillan or Faye Wong. Nathan Fillion is a fine actor but far too macho and good-natured to play a squirrely neurotic like Hank.
-
For Chris Evans I fear it would be a bit of a put-on. And Michael Keaton was a comedian too when he was cast as Batman - worked out wonderfully.
-
These dudes gotta chill out...

The only role Holloway is remotely suited for would be WW2 Fury
by reflecto
He simply can't play any other type of role and anyone pretending he could is living in geek fantasy genre TV world which has very little to do with mainstream role. Stop trying to cast people like Josh Holloway, Summer Glau in serious fucking films.
-
There was a rumour Josh Holloway was up for a role in The Avengers. I think there is only Hank PYm left.
-
Yeah, I know I'm repeating myself, sue me.
-
....sorry, havent made a LOST purgatory joke in days... call me Michael, i still havent moved on
-
the main Villian for the Avengers.
-
Black characters , dont forget about Jackson as Nick Fury.
I'm will to bet War machine and possibly Black widow wont actully be 'Avengers'.I do think they will have a female memebr though so maybe Black Widow
Apart from The famous 3, Hawkeye is certainly the next memeber i think of if i think Avenger , and yes i mean above Ant-man and wasp.
I. Robin Hood and Green Arrow are both obviously inspired by Robin Hood, so i dont think either one is more original than the other.
What else we got...Apart from Bat-man and a few other exceptions the vast majority of DC characters, are WEAK . -
Not loving Lost anymore?
-
...lol Im actually conflicted... loved it at the time, but in hindsight its terrible... I did enjoy the finale, but in the end, very disappointed... Ill never watch it again, but there probably wont ever be another show Ill devote so much time and thought into (especially wit networks canceling shows before they can even get good)...
BUT I STILL GOT SUPERNATURAL... *poom* -
I still get giddy over the geek stuff, if our Fillion gets to act "toe to toe" with acting greats like Renner and Downey, my geek validation will be complete.
-
...and beady-eyed to be friggin' Superman!
-
...What a great idea for Pym.
-
...or whatever like in the comics? Maybe he was with the Tuskegee Airmen in WWII? Or is it gonna end up that in the movies "Nick Fury" is a standard alias for the heads of SHIELD. Like, they have their identities erased and adopt the "Nick Fury" title as a shout-out to the original Nick Fury, war hero and the first head of SHIELD? Or, uh, something.
-
Jun 04, 2010 5:11:47 PM CDT
Spider-Man as an Avenger in the comics was a bad idea
by jaylenotookmyjob
Spidey's the working-class anti-hero. He would have been like, "Me? An Avenger? Psshyeah rrright! See ya in the funny papers winghead!" Which brings up the question... what's movie-Cap's catchy Stan Lee-esque nickname gonna be? "A-head" just doesn't have the same ring to it. Penis head? Naahh... too Seth McFarland-y...
-
... about the movie Avengers villain being a shout-out to the Skrull Secret Invasion storyline from the comics. Seems strange because Whedon supposedly hates aliens as a concept. Bet it ends up being something lame like an alien "Skrull Virus" taking over people's minds or some shit like that.
-
...actually I think all comics suck especially if aliens are involved... the only comics i can say i do still care about are those featuring mutants or Batman... but thats just me
-
I always thought it was the same chick in the first two, but no! In Vacation it was Dana Barron, in Euro Vacation it was Dana Hill (who sadly, died back in 1996). In Xmas Vacation it was, weirdly enough, Juliette Lewis of all people (remember when she still had a career?). In Vegas Vacation... aww who gives a fuck, that shit was unwatchable!
-
I mean, in real life, a mutant is just a person or animal with a birth defect. It's the League of Cripples! Ooo... I'm so scared I'm giving up evil! Also, mutants in comics have way too many overly-complicated and unresolved plotlines.
-
... Hollywood revamped Galactus as a giant cloud of space smoke. Hmmm... a giant cloud of malevolent smoke. NAAWWW... You don't suppose... The Lost Smoke Monster was... Baby Galactus!!!!
-
That's just what this movie needs to get non-geeks to take it seriously: a guy running around with a bow and arrows. What's that? They're Stark arrows with explosive tips? Perhaps magical Asgardian arrows with boxing gloves on the ends of them? Never mind then, all my fears have been allayed.
-

The Avengers has been well cast for the most part...
by blood_bubbles_in_bathwater
... with the exception of Chris Evans as Cap (Aaron Eckhart would add much more depth to such a whitebread, seemingly 2-dimensional character). Renner can do Hawkeye's smartass cockiness with his hands tied behind his back. The way to do this is make Hawkeye a SHIELD agent from inception, just like Black Widow. Make the two of them sleek, black leather background characters that answer to Fury, and you're golden.
-
And Evangeline Lilly as Janet Van Dyne. They have good chemistry together.Hank Pym is kind of a jerk, so Fox should have no problem with that.
-
Eckhart is too old. Cap was a kid when he got shot up with the SSS and tanned with the vita-rays. Evans has the chops and the physicality to nail the role and I expect he will do as well as RDJ does as Stark. The guy you should be concerned about is the one playing Thor--that is arguably the most challenging role to pull off and I know jack squat about that actor.
-
Excellent casting. Jeremy Renner deserves a huge raise in his public persona, so this will definitely put him on the map. Not that "The Hurt Locker" didn't, but this role will ingratiate him to the general public in a fairly kickass way.
I can't wait to see this. -
Loved Renner in National Lampoon's Senior Trip. Seriously, tho, he should be fine if they give him the Ultimates costume and the 616 attitude.
-
I don't know much about the Avengers comics but isn't he one of the main guys?? More black superheroes would be nice.
-
It really gets to me how at this late date everybody and their brother still makes these absolute declarations and presumptions about what comic book elements simply won't "play" on film to the "mainstream" audience. One "silly costume" success after another, after another including a movie about a billionaire vigilante who dresses in a holloween costume and fights an evil clown gaining "wider audience" appeal to the tune of about a half a billion dollars. So it seems pretty obvious to me that the geek audience IS NOW the MAINSTREAM AUDIENCE. Not sayin everything that works on the page can work on screen, but even the worst of these comic book films (cough, Wolverine, cough, cough) seams to have no trouble gaining mass appeal. So maybe its time to ease up on the "web shooters" certainty about what won't play.
-
You guys think the average Joe off the street (ie: 99% of the business for this movie) is going to care or even *know* that Hawkeye is a Green Arrow ripoff?
-
I thought they were going to end up picking someone else for a minute. I'm glad it's still going to him.
-
was going to play Hawkeye, Great pick up. He'll do one hell of a job playing as Clint.
-
That's some fancy footwork slick, but I don't know if using Nolan's Batman franchise as an example of why superhero films *shouldn't* worry about realism is the best approach.
-
Then SHIELD recruits him. As the new XXX. Oh, wait, wrong Sam Jackson secret national security team movie. But this one will be better than both XXX's and Snakes on a Plane combined.
Also, I think Tony Stark will start as just a consultant, maybe even SecDef, and than build and command the Hulk Buster suit to slow down Hulk long enough for Hawkeye to shoot him with a love arrow. A dazed Hulk thinks Thor is a stubbly, sinewy she-beast, and immediately becomes smitten. Thor luckily remembered to wear his "ass-guard" armor, narrowly escaping rectal ragnarok. -
He kill his captors by flicking his fingernails at them
-
kills
-
If Some kind of cool Spider Woman isn't in this then I don't care.... They didn't even call Black Widow by her name in Iron Man 2 , and it was an utterly shit film imo anyways ...
when are we going to get an intelligent adult interpretation of a MARVEL comic on film to rival Nolan's Batman????............ Until that day ,the Marvel corporate whores can stick whatever pop corn crap they want to excrete out of Hollywood up their own asses ....And they wonder why people download all this shit off pirate Bay....ZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!!! -
They should at least give him a cameo...
-
oh dear god no.
-
...but can I say how much I love this casting job?! Loved this guy ever since 28 Weeks Later.
-
..for Comic Con. He's doing it, no question. And dollars to donuts, they're gonna reveal the whole roster (and hopefully who's playing them) there.
-
But if they surprise us and do it this year, I may straight up come in my pants. This has been a long time comin'.
-
It had to be said. That aside, Green Arrow can kick Hawkeye's ass.
-
I snoozed. I lost.
-
Arrows can still work if it's not over-done. He'll have to supplement his archery with marksmanship to make his character more believable.
-
I'm sure he's going to be a fan fave in the film. Of course they won't put him in a dumb costume. He'll just be the sleeveless badass side character who fights with an actual weapon rather than with a shield, or a hammer.
-
I think it's encouraging because that way is HAS TO have more action than that weak, forgettable Iron Man 2.
-
So you don't consider people at the very top of the bell curve to be mutants?
Michael Jordon
Wayne Gretzky
Stephen Hawking
Bill Gates
Supermodels
Kenyan marathon runners
Etc... -
Of course, so will Hawkeye...
I still think it'll be the Ultimate version of Hawkeye tho'. -
You just made the nerdiest comment on here! You mentioned illegal downloading, how stuff sucks, and Nolan's Batman! For all this you win a lifetime banning from the opposite sex! Enjoy!
-
But I do get plenty cock thanks...

-
He'll be the maverick of the group. Just like Wolverine... he won't consider himself "one of them"
-
I also feel that he is the type of character that would be on a black ops team. Bow and arrows are better at killing than maiming anyway.
-

D'you think they should lay off superhero movies for a while?
by mr gorilla
There's been a pretty good decade, just about, that started with Bryan Singer's X-Men and ended with Watchmen. There's been some brilliant films in the middle - I'd particularly choose X2, Spider-Man 2, Dark Knight. & I'd also nominate The Incredibles and Unbreakable. But right now, Marvel seems to be drifting downhill (was The Incredible Hulk any better than Hulk? Was Iron Man 2 any better than Iron Man?). And I'd just love them to stop and take a breath. Do what EON did after Tomorrow Never Dies - which made a pile of money but was not a good movie. Stop, guys. Just stop, take a breath, then start anew.
-
He's going to look weird compared to the rest who have movies already. He looks like he belongs with Singer's X-men.
-
Gambit is just too easy. The X-Men need to be younger anyway for future movies, so the guy in Woverine was okay. Doc Savage would be just right for Holloway. He would only need to bulk up a bit. The other option is the make him Kraven in the next SM movie.
-
Green Arrow is to The Justice League
As Robin Hood is to the Merry Men
As William Tell is to whoever he hung out with -
C'mon. Evil Dead IV please.
