This movie was a master"piece" of SH*T. I love Sci-fi and horror films. Dren is female until Brody has sex with her and she then turns male. Dren as a male bones Polley at the end. Polley is seen at the end signing over the rights to the baby and she states "What is the worst that could happen?". HOW ABOUT A F*CKING SEQUEL. That is the worst that could happen. I ask you all to wait one week to read TRUE reviews online or to hear from some poor soul who paid to see this crap. Not one person I had the unfortunate oportunity with to see this film liked it. No one liked it. Actually the guys were laughing during the Dren/Brody love scene. It was so ridiculous. The movie tried to be serious but it was laughable. It sucked bad.

I really like the direction Guillermo wants to go with it. Reminiscent of movies like Alien and The Thing is exactly what it needs to be.

CYPHER is a great little movie, and Natali is a fine talent - happy to see guys like Almodovar and Del Toro using what kudos they've got to help others make their movies. Hopefully in ten years time or so, Natali will be able to do the same for the next generation of moviemakers.

Lovecraft's writing is a very acquired taste. For those that don't like the antiquated style of speech, it gets tedious quick. It hinges on a very long build up of suspense
I can't see it translating into a mainstream picture.
June 3, 2010, 7:26 p.m. CST
I wrote here that George Romero was a class act, and Guillermo (for some reason I feel comfortable enough to use his first name) is definitely another.
I mean, he could be a total arsehole in person, but reading his words, and listening to his commentary on films like Blade II, Pan's Labyrinth or The Devil's Backbone and you come to realize that this guy is in it for the love of it, as opposed to some latent insecurity passing itself off as ambition.
It's heartening to me that someone can find something that they truly love as a career, and even more inspiring that they do it so incredibly well.
And in reference to At The Mountains Of Madness: It's all about atmosphere, and if Hellboy and Hellboy II have shown us anything, it's that Guillermo Del Toro can create atmosphere, a feeling of dread, of otherworldlines, that belies the relatively small budgets of his films.

I read The Strain. It was a good read, though if you have seen Blade II (minus Blade, and David "The Slayer of Franchises" Goyer) you have essentially 'seen' the novel.
A good read, though it doesn't so far bring anything new to the genre.
And At The Mountains Of Madness is less about the horrors you see, than those that are at the edge of perception, waiting–which, to be honest is the case for most of Lovecraft's fiction.
Personally, I tended to enjoy August Dereth's additions to the Cthulhu Mythos. They tended to be more heroic, and Man sometimes had the wherewithal to fight back, as opposed to Lovecraft, where humanity was generally so overwhelmed that we were little more than lunch for the Hounds of Tindalos, or such such being/deity.
Though there were the attacks on Innsmouth by nuclear submarine (that is, Stuart Gordon's Inboca, btw) though such attempts were relatively few and far between.

Any thread I see, I will voice how bad Splice World was. Give me your email and I will spoil every movie from here forward for you. I see movies sometimes a month ahead of release. Karate Kid was a good remake. Just in case you were wondering. At the end -Cheng tries to break Dre's leg during the end fight but Dre gets back up and uses the cobra move, that he saw on the Dragon Well mountain, on Cheng to win. Opps.. spoiled that one for you too.

for the super short version. Really I don't get the hype for the story either. Outside of the fact that it inspired John W. Campbell Jr's "Who Goes There", which was later adapted into the "The Thing". The ending is the biggest non ending as well, because technically you are not supposed to see the giant monster that the ancient things fear as the two survivors fly away and one of them look back and see's it, and I sure as hell don't see the need for an R rating since there's only a few deaths in the story and they all happen at once and they are found already dead. Dont, don't, don't believe the hype! Harry started this ball rolling. He kept suggesting how cool it would be to see someone take this story on. That is were the seed for this tree began.
June 4, 2010, 12:36 a.m. CST
So let me get this straight. You intend to post messages on this site revealing the end of every movie you see, even before they are realeased. Does that about sum it up?
June 4, 2010, 3:21 a.m. CST
I'm glad Splice is getting so much attention. I love Guillermo's push for these new "psychological monster" films. It's such a refreshing and interesting sub-genre of horror.

"Psychological Tactics" directors, actors, producers and studios use to promote and sell films on tv shows to Citizen John and Jane. I'd love to see someone just say "You know what, fuck it! The studio and the producers made me sign a contract to promote this film, they even hired someone with a psychology degree to teach me how to talk about the films "bullshit human and story dynamics" that would bait a larger ass to seat ratio. Dollar Dollar Bill Ya'll.

"Does that about sum it up?" -Nope. Only the two. But again I would recommend Karate Kid. It was good. Good for a family type of film. I truly wished Splice was good. I love the trailer when I saw it but I could not hold back when I read Harry's review. He has done that with other films that were garbage. He used to have a good solid open mind on things but over the years his reviews and love for crap films has changed.

You think you are getting old? I saw ROBOCOP in the theaters in 1987, man! I could had watched Star Wars in the theater in 1977 if my parents had been people who cared about going to the movies at all. Think about it.
June 7, 2010, 4:32 a.m. CST
I agree. It's quite clear that Guilhermo Del Toro is a very intleigent, very smart, very well read person. And all his audio comentaries for his movies are very good, specially those about his spanish language movies. Hisa two spanish civil War movies, in particular, show how fully he understood the mind and the situation of Spain in those troubled years. Smart, intelligent, talented and cultured. What's not to like about Del Toro?
