Johnny Depp Gets A Sidekick (And There's A New Boat) ON STRANGER TIDES!!

Merrick here...
Stephen Graham (Tommy in SNATCH) will be Johnny Depp's "sidekick" in PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: ON STRANGER TIDES.
He'll portray Scram, a Machiavellian pirate in Disney's fourth installment of the franchise in which Sparrow seeks out the fountain of youth.
...says Variety HERE. Graham worked with Johnny Depp on Michael Mann's PUBLIC ENEMIES, where he portrayed Baby Face Nelson. He'll soon appear as another historical crime figure - Al Capone - in HBO's BOARDWALK EMPIRE.
In related news, an AICN reader called DaMighty 20 sent in two hastily nabbed pics of a new boat from the 4th film. Check out that skeleton mounted to the forward facing sticky outy thing (is that part called the "bowsprit"?) These pics are EMBIGGENABLE (sorry Trazadone).
We appreciate DaMighty 20 for taking the time to send these in.

Who loved the POTC trilogy. Yeah DMC and AWE had flaws but I actually thought AWE had some great moments in it and set pieces. But those films have gone up a few notches because of their high rewatchability factor. Not talking about heavy duty watching, just having it on the TV on a Sunday. They're GREAT for that. Anyway, I hope this one works. Kind of looking at it as more of a stand-alone than a traditional sequel though.

I am under an NDA and thus will only say it's awesome. First screening was in the OC back in April. I was there. I will not say more, except its done but for likely some music and I imagine they'll make it more "public friendly" with some editing, though I loved it as is.

    by umbral_shadow_

POTC 2 sucked balls because there was no Rush (aside from the last ten seconds). POTC 3 was a marked improvement thanks to Rush. I'd like to see Sparrow and Barbosa go head-to-head again, a battle of wits - that's what made the first so watchable. Less of Depp's tomfoolery and more bad ass Barbosa and I'm sold.

    by fitzcarraldo2

The first film was enjoyable for Depp's excellent performance. If it weren't for him it would have been turgid, especially with shop dummy Orlando bloom in the lead role. The second and third films burned up a lot of Depp's credit in my eyes. A fourth? Now he's just plain selling out. How much money does he need?

  • June 3, 2010, 1:16 p.m. CST

    LOVED THE FIRST ONE

    by Darth Busey

First one was really imaginative, and included some solid Caribbean scenery. The next two films had the characters traveling all the fuck over the place. I thought they were "Pirates of the CARIBBEAN". Not fucking Shanghai or the Arctic circle.

  • June 3, 2010, 1:20 p.m. CST

    PIRATES VS. COLONIALS

    by Darth Busey

That's another reason why the first one was great. Pirates vs. British, and then a "ghost ship" as the third party in a Mexican standoff. The fucking Davy Jones lobster men stuff just got really goofy for me. I thought the Jack Davenport character was rather tragic for a fucking popcorn movie. Here's a guy who's been stationed halfway around the world from his home, with no family around him, and the only thing he has in his life is his job and his pure love for the governor's daughter. He was a fucking gentleman, dammit. And he got FUCKED in the end and died a heroic death.

    Stephen Graham is a BADASS!

    by JethroBodine

Stephen Graham is a BADASS! This guys got some SERIOUS chops, although he's rarely been in a position here in the US to display them. I keep hoping that he'll eventually be seen in the US as something more than sidekick material, but alas so far he's only been allowed to play second-fiddle roles, or roles where he doesn't speak much or never speaks at all. SHAME ON YOU HOLLYWOOD! It makes me sad to see guys with immense talent like his get relegated to second-banana work when guys like Colin Farrell and Timothy Olyphant get sweet gig after sweet gig HANDED to them. Hollywood PLEASE don't turn him into another Andy Devine. DON'T SQUANDER HIS TALENT. USE IT!

    I forgot all about...

    by JethroBodine

I forgot all about Ian McShane being in this movie. Ok it's good that they have been smart enough to put McSchane and Graham in the same movie, but they need to be put in a film that actually lets them chew up the scenery, and I'm afraid that a 4th outing in a Pirates franchise ain't the kind of film that I'm looking for.

    Could be cool

    by Kremzeek

Loved the 1st, of course. The 2nd was great once they left Cannibal Island (truth be told, the whole first 30 minutes of that film is unnecessary and serves only to "find" Jack again - bad writing), and the 3rd... well, it started out ok and had some moments, but completely lost me from "Jack in Purgatory" onward. Very disappointing. But I have hopes for the 4th. Looking forward to no more Liz Swan/Will Turner storyline as well. That overstayed its welcome.

I really, really enjoy this franchise.

    by RandySavage

There is something (many things) about the PotC movies that make them much more re-watchable for me than most other big-budget franchises and I'm trying to put my finger on it. <P> The first and biggest thing is that I really love the world that the film-makers created: the real history-meets-storybook fantasy with a aged-in-oak visual patina akin to another favorite movie world, Indiana Jones. Like Jones, there are endless possibilities for ongoing adventures both supernatural and historical in this world. <P> -The cinematography/locations/effect are often rich & beautiful. <P> -The music, particularly in film III is excellent. <P> -Most of the major characters are interesting, likable and/or charismatic, particularly Sparrow, Barbossa, Norrington & Davy Jones. <P> I will acknowledge the films aren't perfect and could use a little more tightening up and little less forced humor/comic relief between bumbling duos. But there are no recent big budget, epic movies that I find as enjoyably re-watchable as this series ('At World's End' being my favorite). <P> That said, bring on Swedgin and part 4.

Why POTC: On Stranger Tides might actually be good...

    by DoctorTom

The clue is in the title - they bought the rights for Tim Powers' On Stranger Tides so that they could turn it into a POTC movie. Of course, they'll probably lose a lot of the best stuff from it, but there's still a fighting chance that the movie won't just throw out the best parts of the book. Heck, it's probably a triumph that they've actually got a novel to start an adaptation from and not just a Disney ride like before!

    by Cliffhung

He blew me away in that movie. I never expected that after seeing him play small sidekick roles in Snatch, gangs of New York, etc. If POTC 3 wasn't the only movie I've ever walked out of I might be excited to see Graham in POTC 4 - hopefully this will lead to more large roles in big movies.

Still wish the film was set in our time on a cruiseship

    by TheJudger

With Capt. Jack as a preforming himself under the guise of a stage actor for the tourist. The stage play pretty much recounts the seas adventures of his that we know a final adventure we didnt get to see about his quest for eternal youth. He swear these adventures be true as much as a rum drinker can recall. I guess that kind of story would be a lot like Baron Munchausen and Robert Ford. Everyone thinks he just a really good liar/actor. Until a sudden storm finds the ship lost in a black rain in a black sea with an ancient enemy attacking/ boarding onto the cruise ship. <P>Whatever the film is now. I think it's a mistake!!!!!

this is taken from the Shane Meadows website messageboard posted by Shane himself. <br> This Is England 86....<br> Post by shanemeadows on Jan 6, 2010, 7:33am<br> "This is England 86" is the new and final (probably) title for the series. Me and Jack Thorn have just put the final touches to the 4 scripts and I am now proud to say that it is finally finished. Channel 4 have greenlit it, though there are still a few minor details to sort out and we look set to shoot at the end of March, beginning of April. To be broadcast later in the year on C4! The Cast (who haven't been cut, died or had a sex change) should get the scripts sent out very soon so they can see what has become of themselves! For fans of the film, all I can say at this point is that Milky is Alive, Combo Returns and Woody is now Climbing the Management ladder at Quick Save and About to Marry Lol. The rest is Top Secret!
