Here's a preview of some of John Debney's score for PREDATORS!
Hey folks, Harry here - just got handed this by - well - you just wouldn't believe me. Anyway, listen up and write your favorite scene you hope is in PREDATORS in the talkback below... that you thinks goes with this music. Come on, put some effort into it. What do you think that score means?

then i think it will be the scene where they first see the uber-predators, after seeing the first predator hung up, liking the references to Silvestri's original score.
-
Few things are more surreal or cooler than watching an orchestra perform/record a score, but watching them perform cartoon music cues is even MORE surreal. On a studio backlot tour back in the 1990's we got to sit in on the studio orchestra recording music for "The Ren and Stimpy Show". It was bizarre.
-
There's alot of pressure to make a good movie with a name like that. I can hear the critics now; "Director of Predators, Nimrod, a real Nimrod". The guy might as well be named Doofus.
-
Although this sounds similar, they should have incorporated the original score ala superman returns. I mean there was nothing as kick ass as that mournful horn solo piece in the original Predetor. Remember that? It's the little things like that that made movies in the past so special. Not how much cgi a flick has...
-
The very beginning is suspense building. My take is that the beginning involves one of the characters hiding from a Predator, but the Predator is is EXTREMELY close. Then it breaks into something a little more fast paced, which makes me think - chase scene. The human makes a run for it and the predator is in pursuit. Then I think there is a fight. The score sounded Jaw-esque in the middle.
-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1nQ2bncchs&feature=related Man I remember continually rewinding the vcr over and over again in the two parts where this played in the movie when i was a kid...

from the first one. So I imagine this is towards the end of the movie where Brody is playing a sort of decoy/come get me game with a predator while the other survivors get to the ship. If it were a bad ass movie, Brody would be dead and this is the music that another character is escaping on that ship to....
-
Gotta be honest, the trailer was kinda meh for me... but hearing this has me more interested. Leaning towards buying a ticket as opposed to just renting. I must gather my homies, if they're not too busy PUSHING PENCILS YOU SONOVABITCH.
-
...hiding, being found and chased by some pissed off Predators, hiding again because you think you're safe, but then you get found and get dead.
-
if you look at the top of the screen there is the bottom of the scoring screen - where they are playing the video or the movie piece they are scoring - at 1:10 i'm sure it shows a predator POV scene where the predator is trying to scan for Brody, and the music definately seems to match.
-
That looks like it's the bottom part of a screen showing the scene they're scoring.
-
That said, John Debney is more than capable, and has been working with Rodriguez and Troublemaker for a good decade now. Still, this is the first proper Predator movie in twenty years. Either get Silvestri or go with a totally new score. That's what WS Anderson did. That's what each Alien director did. Switch it up in total, says I. Either way, I hope this movie kicks my ass. 2010 is sucking summerwise, and I can't wait for Tron:Legacy to save it.
-
Just listen to hisscore for cuttroath island.
-
WHY WOULD YOU NOT GET HIM TO DO A MOVIE THAT EXPLICITLY TRYS TO BRING UP MEMORIES AND NOSTALGIA FOR THE ORIGINAL PREDATOR FILM!!! Debney is doing a decent job of emulating Silvestry but wtf, if you can get the guy that CREATED the music we want to hear in a predator film then just DO IT!!! Incidently while the last AVP flick was much better than the first AVP and the music did a great job of being both original and homage to the Alien franchise and the Predator franchise which I did not think was possible in what looked like a real mess.

SOUNDS GENERIC, JUST LIKE ALL OF DEBNEY'S SCORES....
by TehCreepyThinMan
You know, with Sin City I thought Rodriguez had reached a new level of his career and I couldn't wait to see what he did next. Well. He's pissed away the last five years making a lot of shit with the exception of Planet Terror which I thought was mildly entertaining.

I admired the fact that he was one of the few people talking about fiscal responsibility in the movie industry but now that his flicks cost between 40 to 50 million, I call bullshit.

He's now a low budget George Lucas, re-making properties to keep the machine running, in Rodriguez case, Troublemaker Studios. I understand all Director's urge to have studio space and all the equipment they need to make movies but what RR has done is tied himself to a lot of people and property that he has to pay the rent for and with that responsibility comes the need to churn out generic trash like SHORTS and lower himself to do the, technically, 5th movie in a series with Predators. If he was really as smart as he thinks he is, he would have secured the Friday the 13th/Nightmare on Elm Street rights and pumped out some low budget remakes/sequels/whatever.

I'd even go so far as to suggest that he do some low-budget (I mean actual low-budget i.e. in the 5 million-or-less dollar range) DTV exploitation/Horror flicks. Cast unknowns and put all the money on screen. Go the Roger Corman route since the major studio's only wan the most generic crap produced today. Just some thoughts....
-
Just curious. Sounds good anyway!
-
I'd say it's a hiding, being found, chased, hiding again and escape
-
Adrien Brody's character is smoothtalking to the hot latina girl while sitting before a campfire. Slowly their lips come closer. They kiss, and embrace each other and when they start rolling around on the wood ground the camera turns to the campfire!
-
That top of the wall was on the front wall, not the booth. So it's just cutting off the screen.

-
...But Debney can be brilliant, Passion of the Christ was a masterpiece.
-
I like it a lot. Fits with the style of the first film.
-
The question is, will they have more than just a few token references, or will they have the proper Predator theme that Silvestri wrote?

It's going to be a fail if they don't have Silvestri's theme.
-
"SOUNDS GENERIC, JUST LIKE ALL OF DEBNEY'S SCORES...." Get his FULL score for Cutthroat Island before writing such stupidities. It's one of the ten best orchestral scores of the 90's.
-
Look MoFo we got to get you back before you contaminate Predatorville. If My boss finds out I let a human catch a ride on my ship back here he'll fire me. *second Predator Mark Bartkowski walks in and says* EEEEEEKKK! You still haven't got rid of that thing! I thought we were a team Mulligan?! Our career is over! We're are in so much trouble. Mully says, Well don't worry we'll get the human back before anyone notices. Beside I think its kind of cute..you're a cute little human aren't you..yes you are? Bartkowski screams, CUTE? With that nose?! Come on lets get back to the ship and send this thing back before it gets loose and destroys our lives!
-
... the music is VERY reminiscent of the first Predator film. I love it. Sounds great!

His scores are awesome.

If there's no Silvestri, No Arnold, not even Danny Glover (or his dick blood), why bother making it?

That's the bottom of the movie being projected. I think we're seeing through the window of the sound booth, the top of which is cutting off the picture, making it look like a glowing strip as its out of focus.

I'm feeling ZERO buzz for this movie. Haven't read shit about it anywhere in weeks. I'm predicting a bomb depending on the budget and opening weekend.

The movie would not have been as effective without it.
-
Even if it's a great score... you can't polish a turd.

The most irritating souless Hans Zimmer imitation clone after Harry Greggor-Williams or whatever thje fuck that guy is called. God, i fucking despise those two assclown composers! They are clear example sof what's wrong in today's Hollywood movie scoring.

The dude is hungarian, Nimrod is a relatively common name ther,e and the name itself is taken from th FUCKING BIBLE! You know, THE FUCKING BIBLE? The fucking book that's most read in USA? The fucking book that's America's favorite fantasy novel of all times? Ring a bell?

... kicked ungodly amount of asses. It was brillant!

He has literally scored some of the worst films ever made. Now I can't really comment on his talent and I know he isn't makig these films, but geez, he's had his score play to an awful, awful string of movies, I hope this isn't an omen!

Typical of today's scores; sounds good but only textural and not thematic. There hasn't been a memorable score since THE MATRIX, and that's a scary thought. Anyway, even if they asked Silvestri to come back I'd hope he'd recognize that this film (unnecessary as it is) will be a juvenile ripoff of the original... 'Nimrod' is no John McTiernan
-
I think you'll find The Dark Knight's OST was fantastic.
-
...overcooked melodrama which never lets up enough to create genuine suspense..
-
That's the single most idiotic thing I've read all month. Debney has made a good living scoring kid and family friendly movies and is one of the most dependable and called upon composers working today. The quality of the movies has no bearing on the quality of his scores. If you need a clue, and it seems some of you do...try Dragonfly, Lair, even Evan Almighty has some excellent scoring. Not to mention the freaking brilliant Cutthroat Island. try to get a clue before posting, OK?
-
It's a legitimate statement because it's an OPINION you twat, just like your claim its one of the best 90's scores...just YOUR opinion and certainly not a widely held view outside your bubble.
-
when it was handed to him...coz nobody gives a flying fuck whose name he wants to drop.
-
The score of CUTTHOATH ISLAND is brillant? Brillant is not the word that comes to my mind about it. The word that caoems to my mind about it is the same about the movie: shit. Fucking piece of shit. God, there's no accounting for taste, does it?

Which sucks. In my opinion, Silestri's very distinct, hard hitting, unrelentless score is one of the main reasons Predator works so well. It provides the film with a momentum that keeps the pacing intense and vital. At the 1 min and 1:35 min mark of this video you can hear clear refferences to Silvestri's score, but that alone isn't going to provide this film with the same type of throbbing intensity. I know it's only a segment and out of context, but the element from the first I was hoping they'd keep more than any other (even the jungle setting) was the score.
-
Please tell me that's not fucking true. Anyone?
-
Nimrod was THE ULTIMATE HUNTER. Kinda fitting for a Predator flick. Next time you decide to watch something, read something instead.

What's up with Fox's lack of promotion for this film?!
by GreenSkinFlatHead
It's fucking comes out in 5 weeks. Where's all the billboards, commercials, trailers, etc...
-
I suddenly realize the site really needs a makeover. why do you think black people rarely wear purple?
-
That is all.
-
Fox's lack of promotion = absolute bomb on their hands, and they know it. Rodriguez is a shitty filmmaker, he's still that kid fucking around with his 16mm camera, only now overblown x 1000. El Mariachi is still the best thing he's ever done, by far.
-
He fairly gets a lot of praise for his Predator score, but I think his score for The Abyss is actually better. Soaring, emotional it complements the film perfectly. I'd say a good 40% of my enjoyment of that film is the music.
-
he isn't very good, either. He seems to have garnered some credibility by proxy to his relationship with Tarantino but he isn't half the filmmaker Quentin is. He isn't a hack, though; he tries hard and his efforts are admirable, but his work is often cheap, small scale, and extremely childish. Therefore, I don't hold out a lot of hope for Predators, and I fear the abominable AvP movies have irreparably ruined the credibility of these characters regardless.
-
i'll go see this for a laugh... and the fact that this summer is one of the lamest summers for films in a while... but this film just screams "HEY I'M JUST LIKE THE ORIGINAL, COME SEE ME!". its sad that we have to look forward to something that is merely trying to duplicate (reeeeaaally trying to be) something that i have in my blu ray collection. rodriguez seems more like a fan with means than a film maker.

there are THOR costume pics out there, hows about getting on that AICN? that should prove to be a painfully funny talkback.

Who was it? Robert Rodriguez? We wouldn't believe that? Or John Debney? Hell, *someone* involved with a Rodriguez production, and we wouldn't believe it? 100% doubtful Harry, you know that. You're buddy buddy with the producer, of COURSE we'll believe it!

...will ghost their postition
-
I'm with every one of the other intelligent talkbackers here: If Silvestri is still alive, why not hire him to make a score that echoes something HE originally composed? Why hire someone else to COPY his work when he's still alive?
Someone tell me he passed on it. It pisses me off almost as much as the fact that they went with KNB for the Predators instead of with Stan Winston, but at least some of the KNB guys actually worked with Stan Winston on the original, so that's more acceptable.

the first 10-20 seconds totally sounded like beltrami but then yeah as everyone else said, it became more similar to the original scores. so what happened on Predator 2? did he do a new score or is it what it sounds like, the exact same score as Part 1 but with a little haitian mamba thrown in at times?
-
We hardly believe the shit you say anyway Harry.. Who gives a rats ass who handed you something..you are sooo full of yourself...
-
Yeah, and a bunghole is just a hole in a barrel, but that's not what anyone thinks of when they hear it. Nimrod = Doofus.
-
As far as this site has gone downhill with you in charge Harry, I would not be surprised if they said keep my name out of it cus I dont want the bad pub from being on your site.
-
Stan Winston is dead.
-
Tribal drums!!
-
...was likely busy and too expensive. His A Team score rocks, however.
-
Stan Winston died from cancer nearly two years ago now. Seriously, is this news to you?!
-
He's obviously goofin', umbral_shadow.
-
With the one two killer punch of back to the future and predator. The death blow was flight of the navigator though.
-
I just don't know, man, maybe something action-y? But really, when you get to the heart of it, what does anything mean, really? Isn't "meaning" just an illusory imposition of order by a linear mind locked in a consensus reality? Think about it, man. Oh, but yeah, it sounds like generic action movie music. So... action?
-
Sounds A LOT like Alan Silvestri. Kudos.

in parts. Dissonance, clusters, HSWS/WSHS diminished motifs and harmony as well as Silvestri's use of glissandi. Does this mean that there might be usage rights of the original theme in this score? Would love to hear that percussive theme and of course the mad predator dumbeks/congas and warped didgeridoo sfx. All time classic score imho.
-
a post-media vetures Zimmer clone, he's old school, and his scores for Cut Throat Island and the Passion of the Christ were stand-outs. Some very harsh, and ill-considered drubbing of a decent composer on this talkback, check your ears.

I don't think there would be problems on usage, since it's all Fox.

as far as I have heard (both watching the old R & S Show) and reading about it, all the music was library or production music licensed from older sources. My favourite? The "CALL...THE POLICCCE" scene in Rubber Nibber Salesman, accompanied by the same music they used for the opening of the original NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD.
-
I like how the guy sitting on the right (in the black shirt) gets into the music. His head bobbing was hilarious. ;)
