UPDATE W/ CONFIRMATION!! This Is CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER!! -- Now Embiggenable!! --
Merrick again, again...
PLEASE NOTE: the images below are now rather EMBIGGENABLE!!!

Merrick again...
Mike Sampson over at JoBlo has confirmed that the pieces appearing below are the same images/designs he saw last week. I.e. the ones he described so wonderfully in THIS ARTICLE, which lead to the reader submitted mock-ups we covered yesterday.
Ain't It Cool posted some art today that aren't just fan mockups - these are the real deal.
...says Mike/JoBlo HERE.
Toldya these "would be well worth sharing with you." Ladies and gentlemen, Captain America!
Personally, I think the suit looks pretty great. Evokes the right retro vibe while looking modern enough to not be cheesy. I dig it.
And, another tip-of-the-hat to Broly's Legend for letting us get a look at these.

Merrick here...
Yesterday we linked out to JoBlo's detailed description of the suit from Joe Johnston's CAPTAIN AMERICA movie (HERE). JoBlo's coverage also included readers' artistic interpretations of the costume based upon the site's write-up of the same.
Below, you'll find more art of Cap's suit (from an entirely different origin and source) rendered with much more detail, and with much more clarity, than anything else we've seen to date. These came to us via an AICN reader called Broly's Legend, who contextualized these pieces in a way that...made us pretty sure they would be well worth sharing with you.
Know ye that these be EMBIGGENABLE!

Yeah. Needs wings.
-
Where are the Wings!!!
-
i like it
-
This doesn't make me want to puke in horror.
-
I don't know how well Capt. America's costume can translate to the big screen. It's certainly one of the most difficult costumes!
-
except the mask

You Wear The Camoflage... I'll Wear The Bright Blue Unitard!
by laserpants
I'll distract the Germans with my BRIGHT BLUE COSTUME while you guys sneak around the back and kill Hitler!
-
much better than the other renderings which sucked balls.
-
What happened to the wings on Cap's cowl?? Looks naked without them.
-
Is there any reason why the wings couldn't be, say, painted on the side of the helmet? It doesn't need ACTUAL wings, but you could throw a 2D version on there to break up the field of solid blue.
-
You can look at it and tell who it is, and if they decide on the wings later on for some reason, go ahead.
-
...the suit looks good for a live-action movie.
-
...and I can only imagine that the live version will surpass our expectations. They're combining the classic look with a bit of the Ultimates look, making the costume signature yet utilitarian. It's perfect.
Make Mine Marvel! -
Maybe you should just make it clear that these are all fan-created mock ups based on a description and not the actual suit.
Unless I'm way off and it is the actual suit.
I have to say though, it doesn't look half bad. Maybe the one from yesterday could serve as the WWII suit and the one here could be the updated SHIELD creation...just add wings. -
I don't know if comics are supposed to be realistic really, are they? It always seems more fun when it pushes the whole believability angle... with the noted exception of things like TDK, of course which made reality work within the popcult / comic / power fantasy genre context...
-
It just needed to be said. Marvel has gotten worse and worse over the last 5 years, whilst DC keeps getting better.
-
im not sure what people were expecting when you know what the comicbook costume looks like.
-
...that "rubber suit" technology in the 40's was so advanced. It looks so sleek and sophisticated... give me a break.
-
...won't look as half-way decent as this.
The materials look far too modern for WWII, but someone should give this guy a job in a movie art dept. -
Cool!
-
Maybe he'll get his wings every time a bell rings--I mean, when he's revived in the present.
-
If they could justify the wings, I'd buy them. If they were stylized radio receivers... blah blah blah. The original article said that Cap would have a show costume for USO morale. I imagine they'll play up the silliness of the wings there and let Rogers decry them. "Uh-uh. Not on the real deal."
The blue suit vs. camouflage soldiers is by design for the character. He's meant to be a symbol. He's meant to take the most fire, drawing it from the normal soldiery, and put fear into the Nazis because he just keeps coming at them. Keep your swastika and Third Reich imagery. This is psychological warfare, U.S. patriot style. -
And you guys have talked me into having the wings painted on the helmet...along with the "A". You can even have Bucky be the one to paint them on.
-
Oh, he's supposed to be Captain America. Sorry, the suspenders threw me.
-

I hope they skew slightly closer to the comic in Avengers
by industrykiller!
That's not terrible for WWII Cap, but at least give him red boots in the comic. There's absolutely no reason why he couldn't have the comic suit, wings and all.
-
to be Captain America. Let's face it, he's great as a smart-ass like the Human Torch. All wrong for Cap.
-
like in one of the other drawings from yesterday.
-
Steve Rogers was a young guy when he tried to enlist. He'd be young in WWII, too.
-
If anything, Evans is probably too old.
-
Joel Schumacher would not approve. Of course, he's too busy dying of AIDS right now, so...
-
Jun 02, 2010 12:27:45 PM CDT
To go even further, Rogers would look like a Disney Channel kid
by terry1978
As disturbing as that is, that's more than likely what he'd look like.
-
Clever.
-
or does the helmet in the 3rd image look more like a German helmet? Might wanna look at that...
-
Even if they have nothing to do with the movie, nice work!
-
i like this look. although... maybe it's just the white background, but the helmet actually looks like it could use wings. but i'm sure it doesn't feel that way in an actual scene. this is better than i hoped. i kinda love it.
-
I'm almost willing to bet this is an official leak. If not, I'm very impressed with the fan rendering of the suit. Either way the artist is a professional.
-
Yesterdays offering was depressing.
-
Still, not a bad design and FAR SUPERIOR to the last one, in which it looked as though Cap was wearing a Nazi Helmet.
-

2nd photo - LOOK AT THE SIZE OF... oh, that's his thigh.
by yotzvonfrelnik
-
ha ha, just kidding, look alright for a cartoon. betting the real thing will look even better.
-
keeps 90% of the comic's look while making it fit with the real world. I like it a lot.
-
it makes sense he would be attired in something resembling body armour. i like the look. doesn't stray too far from the original. I do miss the little wings though. Just put them back on and make them sharper more aerodynamic
-
looks functional, semi-realistic.
-
AND WERE HE TO DITCH THE SUSPENDERS, THIS WOULD BE THE PERFECT COSTUME.
-
Not enough bandoleers or ammo pouches!
And Cap don't need no eff'in feet!!!
And where's the hundreds of tiny uniform teeth bleeding around the gums?!?!! -
Cap's gonna bust a cap!
-
. . . looked much more ragged and of material they'd use back in WWII. This looks way too modern.
-
I think the red suspenders are clever, especially when you look at how it hold the shoulder armour in place.
I like it. Put little sharp wings on and..perfection.
Even then it's still very good. -
More please.
-
Let's be honest, the wings would have looked goofy. It looks like a good 'realistic' interpretation for the modern era Cap. I'm hoping for a blue WWII era suit close to American servicemen's style.
-
WTF Cap without the wings is like Supes without the S-curl or Bats without the pointy ears or even wolverine without the headdress on his mask..oh, wait logan never wore his mask in the X-Men movies thanks to that cum guzzler Singer.
-
WTF Cap without the wings is like Supes without the S-curl or Bats without the pointy ears or even wolverine without the headdress on his mask..oh, wait logan never wore his mask in the X-Men movies thanks to that cum guzzler Singer.
-
Whether they read comics or not. But seriously, Captain America? I know absolutely ZIP about this character and I don't think I'm alone.
-
It's just....missing something without them. They don't need to be full-on feathers, but...something.
-
Marvel Entertainment promotes Joe Quesada today to chief creative officer. The man who thought that the "One More Day" Spiderman storyline was a good idea(NOT). Marvel movies are in big trouble. As for the costume, IT STILL SUCKS!!! Nice of Marvel Entertainment not to honor the character Jack "King" Kirby(RIP) and Joe Simon(who is still alive) created. The costumes that Captain America and Superman wear are ICONIC and don't need to be changed for the sake of change.
-
cause they're not.
-
Awwww, shit.
-
In the middle east?Or what title they'll use in other countries?
-
looks like captain dildo
-
a professional artist makes. This is essentially the same design seen in the last post, except rendered by a much more talented artist. Looks good. Also, cool to see them ripping off that pose from the old Jim Lee X-Men.
-
Well done, Johnston
-
Until they find something else to bitch about.
-
People are bitching that there wouldn't be rubber-looking clothing technology, but they're willing to concede there'd be a Super-soldier serum that would allow a man to completely restructure his DNA?
Wow, tough crowd.
For the record, if the costume looks anything like this, I'd say they did a good job. -
The people working on his whole image were a little ahead of their time back then.
-
It's not working. There's no way i can warm up to Captain America. He will always be Captain GaymeriKKKa for me.
-
that would work without looking goofy. Also, this might not be the WW2 version of the outfit, but a SHIELD-designed 21st Century one.
-
looks like he fell out of fucking G.I. Joe
-
is half as good as this concept. The helmet/cowl combo is sweet. I wish the wings were painted on the side though... like pilot wings or something. Love the gun holster too. Great job.
-
Looks very cool IMO.
-
in the upper chest region be considered nipples? Discuss.
-
Well said, and I agree 100% with everything you said. Cap is SUPPOSED to look like this--and they pretty much nailed it. Wings on a helmet just wouldn't look right--but as you said, they may dress him up in a non-combat cowl and wings for show. Besides, he's much closer to the source material look than the X-Men were, and their films did okay. (To address some of the comments from others.) And hey, how many laypeople knew who the X-Men were before the movies?
-
The BROWN boots and gloves look BAD!! PLEASE make them RED as they SHOULD be!!
BROWN is a NAZI color!!! -
...his RED WINGS, that is!
Or maybe Thor inspires him to put wings on his head? -
...between the comic book look and a more realistic rendering for battle readiness. The helmet is very cleverly done and the rest looks pretty badass. My only quibble is the damn shoulder stars! I realize they are found in the comic book as of late, but I've always found them to be redundant and fussy, kinda like all the \S/'s on Superman's suit in SR. Oh well, can't have it all!
-
Works for me
-
When Achilles and his Myrmidons take the beach of Troy, Achilles basically leads his men while moving with super-agility and utilizing his shield to take cover. Those speed + reflexes should be about the same for Cap on the battlefield.
-
Much better than the other pictures we saw. If this is what it actually looks like I'd be perfectly happy with it, although I still want the wings on the helmet. They could just paint them on for all I care.
-
Looks like something a soldier would wear. Body armor. Looks great. Nothing wrong with it.
-
It honestly ain't Captain America without those stupid little wings on his head. Nuff said.
-
Wings Over America!
-
even has stitches visible
-
but now I think they're needed. Otherwise I like it. And he's supposed to be a symbol not a ninja. So bring on the colors.
-
Getting rid of the white A on his forehead would make it less silly for me.
Blacking out his eyes the same as they do for Batman would also help. There's just something silly-looking about the way his mask looks.
As always, keep in mind that I'm NOT a Captain America fan, so my opinions may be moot at best. -
Jun 02, 2010 1:19:48 PM CDT
By the way, we don't know the context of these
by battle_royale_with_cheese
If they bring Cap into a modern age at some point during the movie (maybe towards the end), they may give him a more updated costume, which may be what we're looking at here.
Either way, I'm taking a wait-and-see position, even though I think this looks decent. -
Did no one read Ultimates? Or even the modern 616 Cap comics? During all the WWII flashbacks he wears an outift similar to this. But when he is state-side or when he wakes up in present day he has the more classic Captain America suit. Hopefully they go this route...and give him the Wings. He looks bald without them. But for his Combat WWII suit this looks pretty great.

did jim liefeld design this?
http://progressiveboink.com/archive/robliefeld.html -
No wings! They're trying their best to not make him look too fuckin retarded. Just go with it ya fuckin babies.
-
I like it, maybe the helmet will grow on me. It looks a little too, streamlined/bald/something without something to break it up. Either a (slightly) more pronounced lip on the helmet, or the "wings" and I think it would look better. However . . .Overall, I'm not complaining. I also think the more exposure to it the more I'll get used to it. I really want to like it, and appreciate the fine line they have to walk with a character like this.Next step is really the hard part; make a good movie out of it!-Cheers
-
and it would look gayer if Bucky was in the pics too.
-
Maybe it's just me...
-
Come on DC and WB!
-
now this
-
Hey guys just to let you know that theres no need to worry, we will be using CGI to display the wings on the helmet, i was down at the production studios yesterday doing some script work and i saw the frame work they are using and the cgi is going to blend in like we've never seen before. J-Johns and myself felt that the wings in a paractical form just looked cumbersome, so we are going full CGI on this one. As for the suit, evans tried it on and said if fit like a glove and felt more like a superhero costume then what he wore in the fantastic four movies we did a few years ago
-
It LOOKS obviously like Chris Evans.
-

DOES NOT LOOK WW2, at all. NEEDS A HELMET, not a cowl.
by stereotypical evil archer
-
The costume is not bad but the Helmet needs those white wings on it or Captain America will just look bald. Like a blue chrome dome. That's why I never liked the Ultimates version.
-
Awesome stuff there. Can't wait.
-
Where are the Thor concepts JoBlo also talked about???
-
Great concept art too.
-

Is this the WW2 uniform? What's the present day uniform look lik
by dogsoup
Yeah I ask for a lot.
-
and indeed needs wings
-
That Batman porno had better costumes than that.
-
In an attempt to defend him, Captain America is the *good* America, not the Teabagger AmeriKKKa. For instance, in the recent arc, Real Cap fights (and wins) against the Fake Cap who is a racist teabagging bigot right wing ultrafascist.
-
Jun 02, 2010 1:36:41 PM CDT
That's the modern costume for the end of the movie.
by stereotypical evil archer
Or Joe Johnston doesn't know shit about World War II.
-
Helmet was the way to go. Comic book Half masks always look like shit when people try to recreate them in real life.
-
I mean, really. It meshes fine with what has been shown in IM and Inc Hulk.
-
CGI'd dicks
-
pretty good! nice start.
-
You're the reason Hulk wore purple stretchy pants and looked neon green despite how stupid that looks in reality. No Wings! He'd look absolutely silly. Yes he would, yes he fucking would.
I sincerely hope this is not his WWII uniform because it doesn't look right for the period. He should look more like a Army Ranger more Captain Americaerized like they did in the Ultimates. For my money, he should have a small selection of uniforms..Ceremonial, WWII battle-ready and modern times.
-
All things considered it's not a bad looking costume, and I don't mind the lack of wings, but this does take place during WWII, right? Did they even make fabric like that back then? I know this takes place in a fictional universe, but it just seems kind of anachronistic to me.
-
I would have liked wings painted on the side of the helmet, but this looks like Captain America to me. I'm happy.
-
It looks sort of "off" without them. Too bulletheaded. Otherwise, I think it's great.
-

by royston lodge
Here's what it would look like without the big white A:
http://76.10.145.39/downloads/capam_noA.jpg
Here's what it would look like if they blacked-out his eye, a-la Batman:
http://76.10.145.39/downloads/capam_noA_blackeyes.jpg
The blacked-out eyes doesn't look nearly as good as I thought it would, but the elimination of the 'A' works, IMHO. -
I've been a huge Cap fan for years and always wondered how his suit would look when represented on film. This is a nice combination of the Ultimates look, the regular Cap costume, and a modernized film version.
But again, this is still just a concept drawing. I'm still wondering how the costume will translate when it's actually put on Chris Evans and filmed. -
And agree with the others that the helmet needs painted on wings.
Looks good otherwise!
Actually, they could make the strap rivets not look nipple-like. -
Is a fucknut. Realism is for fucks.
-
Shoulder pad/red straps look SHIT.
-
...in Iron Man 2? It looked half broken and was being used by Stark to support his...collider? to make the new element.
-
I think Collider had some Thor concept art: tiny.cc/d60ep
-
this looks like Ultimate Cap from Ultimates 2.... this isnt WWII cap gear!
-
...is already making me hate Chris Evans playing Cap!!!!

by jimmy rabbitte
Suit looks good, though.
-
Ok, It would be PERFECT for the Avengers movie. As for the WW2 outfit, it looks too modern. Make it look more timely, more fabric, less spandex.
-
If you don't, I don't want to know you!
-
Where are they? They are what makes the uniform work.
-

-
Absolute spot-on perfection. Kudos to Marvel AGAIN for getting this exactly right. Caps duds have a real Ultimates feel to them, and much like Sam Jackson as Nick Fury in the Ultimates as well as the film universe...it just works. Looking forward to seeing the WWII take on Cap's costume. Make mine Marvel! Excelsior!
-
i think if they would have wanted our stupid opinions they would have hired us...but i like it and im a DC guy...
-
Fuck Yeah!
-
Wow, how original. One of those "lol OMG it's a movie with super soldiers and you think something's not realistic enough lol???" people. You know what, you're right. Cap should wear whatever looks badass, nuts to internal logic. And while we're at it, he should use an iPhone.
-
after all they also helped to defeat Hitler and won WW2.right? right.
-
or at least Captain North America? ha.
-
I hate it when the movie people tinker too much with the costume. What's great about Spider-Man and Superman is that they are too iconic for Hollywood to change their looks. These costumes have survived the decades because the fans LOVE THEM.
-
but frankly i dont see to be a hit outside USA.
-
they work in comics, why not in movies? right?
-
So they're going straight to the round shield then and not using the kite shield at all??
No problem with that I guess, but would have been cool to see him use both shields. -
Here's hoping
-
and the leather/vinyl of Superman Returns, Jorge, some things work better on the comic book page than they do on film.
And fuck you, ominus. How about actually letting them make the film before you rip it to shreds? -

So then I thought, how about giving him riot-police goggles?
by royston lodge

And that made me think, "gosh, he's starting to look like Snake-Eyes."
So then I threw this together:
http://76.10.145.39/downloads/capam_noA_snakeeyes.jpg
Now THIS design, I like. I like it a lot. I can imagine this guy telling Tony Stark what to do. -
Cheeting fridge beers on nuked beanpole sharks! So Hulk Hogan called but it was ok because Kurt Russell was laughing at a huge lion, brother! Stop me before I sub-reference again! -
Cap may very well carry the kite shield in WWII and his costume will certainly be made of materials more of that time period. If they're this spot-on with the modern day threads, I'd expect a spectacular 1940's era suit as well.
-
I'm of the opinion that this actually looks more modern with a retro vibe, rather than a suit made during WWII. With THAT said, I'm not sure WHAT to think. It really depends on how it is worked into the movie, as to what time period. If the movie depicts Captain America in World War 2 and later in modern day, I would prefer more contrast in the designs. If this suit was for WWII, I would prefer a helmet (perhaps one to fit over the headpiece that is pictured here) and goggles, and I would have classic seams (nothing fancy), and make the armor APPEAR more accurate to the time. If this is modern day Captain America, I would make the gloves and boots match the red of those suspenders. For what it's worth, this opinion comes from a trained artist and fan.
-
And he is fighting Saddam correct?
-
And no, he's not a Gulf War vet in this. Howard Stark worked on the Super Soldier serum, hence Cap's shield in Tony's lab.
-
Spider-Man without the Spider. Batman without the bat on his chest. The wings are another American symbol. And you can say, he has enough American symbolism with the red/white/blue but the wings stand for the national bird and a huge symbol for American freedom. That's why it is missing. Plus the mask looks naked without it. Screams "Something's missing!" I'm sure someone could design it and make it look cool. My cousin used to draw/paint eagles and they looked awesome. Still much better than the previous version, though suspenders don't look right. I know it's supposed to be a function for his parachuting but it should be more streamlined. I mean it's ok the way it is here. The shield though is awesome, much better than the one in the Iron Man movies.
-
Not too shabby.
-
If that doesn't get you excited nothing will.
-
Captain America: The First Intimidator
-
That's Captain America. The 'A' on the helmet and the star spangled shield make that statement quite clearly. And those of you that think Cap isn't an icon are fucking clueless. He's a goddamned legend. Do you even read comics? Have you ever? The guy's been around as long as Bats, and much longer than the Webhead.
-
Fuck Cap-taint America. I want Hobbit!!!
-
Fuck Cap-taint America. I want Hobbit!!!
-
This can work "as is" for the modern design. The brown of the gloves and boots match the belt, and I think it DOES work better in that way, setting the red suspenders apart. Nice modern day design. Count me satisfied. My apologies for rushing with an opinion. I say go with it...and make the WWII design a classic version of this, appearing accurate to the time.
-
I was on the fence as to whether or not it would be cool to paint wings on the helmet...kinda the same approach as aircraft nose art. Then I saw some screen caps from the 70's TV Captain America, with the wings painted on a motorcycle helmet. I'm not on the fence any more. No wings works for me.

Probably couldn't have been any better than that
by anything but tangerines
congrats
-
after seeing the fan-made drawings and looking up the Ultimates designs i thought they were going too far with the 'realistic' WW2 combat look, it didn't look like Captain America any more. This has the right balance in my opinion. Look forward to this.
-
I think the lack of 'eye black' around the character's eyes is an interesting choice. Personally, I think eye black is a better look, but honestly how practical is it for a character to bust out the makeup before they get suited up for action? It'll be interesting to see how that translates to actual photos and lighting.
-
If they wanted wings they would have cast Paulie Walnuts
-
You have waaaay too much time on your hands. You are, however, remarkably consistent and semi-fascinating at times. Carry on.
-
...I think it looks good. Also, I can picture him standing next to Iron Man. So yeah, it works.
-
That's been the character since World War fucking 2. I didn't necessarily expect them on there, nor am I THAT enraged that they arent, but it would have been nice and it COULD work. We have every right to bitch about it.
-
Yes, it makes that much of a difference. Shows the filmakers guts to embrace this as comic book movie. It is of all things NOT lame.
-
In fact, I really dig it. I do wish that this would be his current suit though... and have him in the 40s look something like this
http://76.10.145.39/downloads/ capam_noA.jpg -
wrong link... this
http://www.ifanboy.com/files/images/marvel/Ultimate%20Captain%20America.jpg -
Not in real life. No one would take Cap seriously if he really had wings sprouting out of his head.
-
Count me in... even though I already was.
-
It's just about right especially for the Ultimate costume and the WW2. I still think that for the Avengers movie it needs to be a little closer to the comic but that's a damn sight better than I thought it was going to be. Fuck Green Lantern, we've had Cap' and Thor over a year before release and fuck all from GL and that's coming out at the same time as Thor (more or less).
-
it sold 210m from its initial run from the 40s until now.next time pay attention when reading info from wikipedia.besides that doesnt mean a shit when you start hypothesizing about its worldwide success during its's theatrical release.
-
Especially if they are ACTION films that don't need many subtitles. (Speaking as a Brit, by my understanding) anyone that has a problem with America has a problem with its government/foreign policy/unreserved support of Israel whatever it does. Doubt they'll care that this movie is about a super-hero named Captain America much. Oh and you all mostly still got a free pass for electing Obama over another Republican, remember?
-
And you just know that SOMEBODY is going to bite the edge of that shield...like it's a fresh Whopper at Burger King!!! YEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAH!!!
-
just needs some metallic wings on his head. nothin big or overdone but i think that little detail would make it capatain america for me. i dunno. maybe i'll get over it eventually. these are cool tho
-
Coz it gives you wings! I like the design, but it looks un-balanced with out the wings. it's based on a fantasy comic book, so what if they would 'flap' around. He needs wings!
-
"...tell him I'm not here."
-
You didn't get the memo?
I'll make sure my secretary sends you another copy of that memo?
Now that we're on the subject, I hear you're having trouble with your T.P.S. reports... -

...or wing-like designs on each side of the head, and this design is perfect. The head just looks odd blank on both sides. Looks too much like Bullseye without them. Surely the talented costume designers working on this film could come up with some type of design (if wings were deemed too "cheesy" or whatever the reason is for their absence in this design) that would work. Leaving one recognizable element out of the Cap's signature speaks more of laziness. Maybe some type of chrome "earpiece" type designs could be added. It needs SOMETHING. Otherwise, good work.
-
Completely evokes Captain America to me. Wings would finish off the gear, but it's not necessary. Looks great.
Perhaps a more revealing look at Thor's costume now? -

and destroys a factory which was building nuclear bombs.that was pure propaganda inside the comic since in reality Saddam didnt even have a fucking army capable to fight, not nuclear weapons.and the comic was written by a Scottish asshole.do you understand what i am trying to say?Captain America is a very difficult character to use properly, because regardless how much you want to do a great and sincere job with this character, its very easy to mishandle him and make him misunderstood by the audience. Its not strange that the character was rebooted 5 times until it had the fortune to arrive into Ed Brubaker's skilled hands, who has done a marvelous job with Cap until now.Personally i want Ed Brubaker to be the consultant of the character in the movie production.but i am reading that Bendis or Whedon might be the consultant instead, something which is not very promising.and if they intend to totally follow the Ultimate road for this character, then i am sorry but the worldwide audience is not going to like this version of Cap very much.
-
The suit is crap. It lacks the wings (this work well in movie) with stupid straps instead of stripes, muscle is not defined anywhere. This is not our Captain. Poor Steve.
-
and its totally another thing to watch the actor wearing the actual uniform.which means that not only the uniform might change in order to aesthetically suit better the physical appearance of the actor, but it also means that the real suit will give a different impression from the one that we are getting from these pictures right now.
-
A guy who was perfect for Johnny Storm is the round peg that wont fit into the Captain America square.
Jeremy Renner would have been wicked.
Suit looks all kinds of gay. Looks like the modern one as it wouldn't fit WW2. -
I am optimistic.
His suit does look too modern for WWII, but like others I assume this is his 21st. century outfit. -
I actually think it's pretty clever. I like how the suit is grounded in reality. Does make sense for the era it takes place in. Would have to wait and see the final real-life version to pass full judgment though.

Go all comics. Full, bright, sky blue, blood red, whiter-than-white white, wings-on-helmet, red fold-down wader boots, red gloves, bright bulls-eye star on his chest, glowing A on his head, bright shiny shield with the best bulls-eye outside of an archery class, the whole 9-yards. Screw going for realism. Forget that he's fighting with real soldiers in WWII, or that we have a greater awareness of what war's like. Forget muted colors that might have some chance of being somewhat practical in blending in when moving a whole army so you don't get yourself and your fellow soldiers shot. Just make him a symbol of American patriotism.I know he's a comic book hero, and a symbol of patriotism. But if people are going to complain because the producers try to cater to common sense in war and the fact that being part of a platoon means trying to not draw fire to your band of brothers, then just go balls to the wall and make him a live-action cartoon on film. I hate to say it, but I don't think they can win. Quasi-realistic, and we'll get the griping we have now from the fan boys. True to the comics, and people are going to be starkly aware of how that would get Rogers killed (because, even though he's a super-soldier, he's not Superman), or at least everybody around him killed. Either way, it's going to split audiences. At least if these talkbacks are any indication. So yeah. Good luck with this, Hollywood!-Cheers

just like those old bomber planes with painted girls on them. he should have them painted.

I have. The majority of the world haven't, and don't see Captain America as an uber-patriot kicking the shit out of America's enemies, they see him as just another Marvel superhero. If they haven't heard of him, depends if the movie looks good. If he's kicking Nazi ass in the trailer everything's peachy. If he's invading Iran singing I'm A Yankee-Doodle-Dandy, possibly a problem. But I don't think he'll be doing that. As for the costume, meh it could be worse, but I still want wings and red boots/gauntlets, at least for the modern costume.

I don't get why Marvel has been trying to ditch the wings on Cap's mask/helmet for so many years. They are a fundamental characteristic of his silhouette. Why don't they take away the wing's on Thor's helmet while they're at it and turn him into a generic looking medieval soldier?
Captain American needs to have wings on his helmet, otherwise he just looks like a generic bald dude with an A on his head. It's as great an offense as taking away Batman's ears or Daredevil's horns. -
Hope the live action version looks that cool.

Both Batman Begins and Ironman managed somewhat plausible explanations for the heroes outfits. But this? How do they explain a grown man willingly running around in this...this...well, in THIS? I just can't see it working in the cinematic universe Ironman created. They need to de-fruitcake-ify Captain America for the big screen. Screw the outfit in the comics. Yeah, I said it...fark 'em.
Like LaserPants said..."You Wear The Camoflage... I'll Wear The Bright Blue Unitard!". They might as well use that as the key origin scene, because nothing else would be any less ridiculous. -
Did you grow up reading Captain America and Avengers comics? Did you enjoy watching Cap fling his boomerang-like shield and rally his team and overcome incredible odds in his red buccaneer boots, his winged cowl and his chainmail tunic? Yeah, me too.
That's not what we're going to see in the Captain America and Avenegers movies. These movies are not intended for fans of the character(s). They're designed for the average theatergoer who has absolutely no fucking idea who Captain America is.
Oh yeah, they'll throw fans a bone and put in a little detail here or there, but they usually manage to fuck that up anyway.
I'm amazed they actually put an A on his helmet and a white star on his chest. Why not go with Captain America dressed in all black kevlar? Think like Nolan! -
Instead, I have a feeling these images give away that this movie will be book-ended by scenes from the modern day.
Fury, Stark, and Thor find Cap frozen and defrost him. As he begins to awaken, the WWII flashbacks begin.
The movie climaxes where it began, with Cap in the ice, though this time, the first time.
Then the film closes with Cap coming to, getting this suit, and then meeting the newly-formed Avengers.

It was a mess after Normandy, the Nazis are often wearing muted blue/grey... they don't really blend in to the background. Kirby's own memories of WW2 as a scout seem to indicate both sides either knew where the enemy was or stumbled into them in chaotic Europe. And even so, it makes perfect sense (in Caps world) that he might be more brightly coloured to draw fire towards his BULLET-PROOF SHIELD.

How can you be a fan of Captain America and think his costume looks "cheesy"?
If you're embarrassed about Captain America's uniform, then don't sign on to direct a movie about him. How complicated is that? This costume is beyond cheesy-- it looks like someone trying very hard to look stupid and succeeding. By the way, is this costume supposed to exist during WWII? This is his USO costume? Jack Kirby must be very happy in his grave that someone finally came along to fix that crap uniform he designed. Way to go Joe Johnson!! Screw Kirby!! -
The costume is not complete without his wings, or does have to earn them in the movie, we'll have wait and see.
-
Neoprene foam wetsuits first appeared in the 1950's and were later sandwiched, with thin sheets of tougher material such as nylon, so it stands to reason S.H.E.I.L.D. could have it earlier.
Pilots were already wearing leather in WWI and WWII.
The first usage of the term Flak Jacket refers to the armour originally developed by the Wilkinson Sword company during World War II to help protect Royal Air Force (RAF) air personnel from the flying debris and shrapnel thrown by German anti-aircraft guns' high-explosive shells (flak itself is an abbreviation for the German word for "anti-aircraft gun")
The jacket consisted of manganese plates sewn into a waistcoat made of ballistic nylon (a material engineered by the DuPont company); therefore, flak jackets functioned as an evolved form of plate armour or brigandine.
During World War II, flak jackets and steel helmets were worn by US Navy personnel on aircraft carriers during battle, since the ships and especially their flight decks offered little protection for their crew. The jackets were supposed to protect against shrapnel and heat.
Aramid fibers are a class of heat-resistant and strong synthetic fibers. They are used in aerospace and military applications, for ballistic rated body armor fabric, in bicycle tires, and as an asbestos substitute.
Aromatic polyamides were first introduced in commercial applications in the early 1960s, with a meta-aramid fiber produced by DuPont under the tradename Nomex. This fiber, which handles similarly to normal textile apparel fibers, is characterized by its excellent resistance to heat, as it neither melts nor ignites in normal levels of oxygen. It is used extensively in the production of protective apparel, air filtration, thermal and electrical insulation as well as a substitute for asbestos. Meta-aramid is also produced in the Netherlands and Japan by Teijin under the tradename Teijinconex, in China by SRO Group (China) under the trade name X-Fiper , Yantai under the tradename New Star and a variant of meta-aramid in France by Kermel under the tradename Kermel.
Based on earlier research by Monsanto Company and Bayer, a fiber - para-aramid - with much higher tenacity and elastic modulus was also developed in the 1960s-1970s by DuPont and Akzo Nobel, both profiting from their knowledge of rayon, polyester and nylon processing.
Much work was done by Stephanie Kwolek in 1961 while working at DuPont, and that company was the first to introduce a para-aramid called Kevlar in 1973. A similar fiber called Twaron with roughly the same chemical structure was introduced by Akzo in 1978. Due to earlier patents on the production process, Akzo and DuPont had a patent war in the 1980s. Twaron is currently owned by the Teijin company
Once again, it would make sense in this world for S.H.I.E.L.D. and Howard Stark to have this tech prior to the 60's.
I would also like to point out that there is no such thing as super soldier serum, vibranium, adamantium and Thor, the God of Thunder. -

They might be better off keeping that kid in traditional uniform.

some other guy above said something very important:its ridiculously stupid if you think its realistic to have a soldier dressed with a bright, colored uniform like Cap's and have him go in convert operations during WW2 or any other war.The uniform works in the comics, but sure as hell it doesnt work in a movie,at least in a realistic one and not a cartoony one.Cap America is not Superman whose colored uniform with the pants out can work in a realistic/cartoony movie.Cap America is a man with enhanced human powers, but he is not immortal who doesnt care about getting harmed from conventional weapons. He is mortal fighting in a war and using a bright, vivid, colored uniform like the above instead of a camouflaged military uniform is pure suicide thus its totally unrealistic. So having the wings and making him look ridiculous when fighting the Nazis, should be the least of the problems the producers should worry about.Unless ofc they are going for a cartoony movie and not a realistic one, which in this case they should have kept the wings since they are essential part of the original cartoony uniform.
-
Why is it that Marvel thinks that getting rid of the wings on Cap's mask somehow makes him look less corny, when he's got a giant letter A on his head? That is a much sillier and kitschier design element than having wings on his mask/helmet is, and yet that is present in almost all versions of Cap. If you're going to mess with his mask design in the name of being more "serious" you have to get rid of the letter A, too. Personally, I say leave both the wings and the A in place, and don't mess his mask up under the pretentious notion that you are making him look more "serious."
-
on Deadliest Warrior, I'm am psyched about what this fucker could do with that thing.
-
...they could add a mental institution haircut, French accent and ludicrously tiny pickup truck and he could be some kind of bizarre Jeunet movie character!
-
that show made the shield seem much more viable as an offensive weapon to me.
-
It's too busy. Those buckled suspenders/shoulder pads look ridiculous, and would inhibit his agility. Dude is not playing football, he needs to be able to raise his arms overhead!
And those pouches on the front of the belt look like they would also restrict movement.
So chainmail is not practical, OK. But why not kevlar mesh to preserve the classic look, instead of that cumbersome padded leather?
This should be a middle-step outfit, like Spider-Man and Iron Man went through a few suits, Cap should have a reference to a crude effort like this before arriving at the look that we know and love.
-
That's why he carries a shield. A big, distracting, bulletproof shield. I don't know why you aren't getting this.
-
i admit i know nothing of this hero.
-
Hasn't anyone read Brubaker's run on the character. Cap wasn't the covert ops guy, he was the symbol to inspire the soldiers and strike fear into the Axis forces. His costume is part of that symbolism.
-
Actually fuck the wingies. Costume looks ace. Well done Mr or Mrs costume designer!
-
Hey, it's Cap and they got rid of the damn wings. Ultimates look is cool, I'm down with this.
-
It's very 40's, I hope its a period film. They should lose the 'A', though. The cool thing about the costume is that it actually look functional with the straps and whatnot, a little more practical than your standard issue bat-devil gear. But the 'A' kills that. I've never been a Captain America fan but I've grown more fond of him as a character, over the years. I hope they get this film right.

a lot of reasons for that:He might use a shield, but the other other soldiers dont.So he might not give a fuck if his cover is blown up,but i dont think his team-mates are sharing the same feelings when their team and mission is being jeopardized.Bullets are going to ricochet in the shield.Which means it might put into harm his team-mates.The shield can stop bullets, but as sure in hell it cant stop the full impact and the shrapnels from grenades, bombs, rockets, shells or the flames from flame-throwers and so on.Ergonomically speaking the shield is a joke.It partially protects his body and i dont care how super-fast he is.can he protect himself using from a machinegun? there is a reason ancient armies and the modern SWAT/police/riot control teams use full-body shields.i am sure there are other reasons which i am too tired to think of right now.so cya later.

What is he, Thor? One of you fanboys explain that. And no, his costume is corny enough as it is, they don't need to make it sillier.

...painted on wings. I'm a little concerned about the shoulder pads. They look like they might interfere with movement. I believe that this is the modern uniform that cap will have at the end of the film. If you remember Agent Colson's reaction to the Cap shield in Tony Stark's workshop, you have to assume that it was the shield used by him in WW2. Why else would he have been so appalled to see it used as a shim for Tony's experiment.

This is what he will look like in the modern parts of the story. This is the Ultimate Captain America outfit.
I am glad they are not doing Buccaneer boots and feathered wings on his helmet.
By the way all of you whiney fucks, Kirby's original comics had cap wearing a modified helmet.
Not a cowl.
This looks believable but a bit to modern for WWII -
What they could do is take that same approach, but instead of three lines, have the "wings" be the twin captains stripes on each side of his helmet. Displays his rank while helping to add some variance to his blue headedness. That would be a nice "realistic" approach to wings on cap's head.
-
The minute you start thinking realism has a place in a superhero world you torpedo the entire story. That's why most of these movies suck.
These characters and stories are all-out fantasy and should be treated as such. If you're like Nolan and think Batman should wear kevlar because it's more realistic then you've missed the boat entirely.
If you think Captain America shouldn't have wings and an A on his head and throw a shield because it wouldn't work realistically on a battlefield, then you've completely missed the point.
And since the movie industry behind these films and the ignorant audiences that line up to go see them in droves THINK EXACTLY THIS WAY, these movies will continue to suck.
Next up: Why it's not realistic for a man to bang a cane on the ground and transform into the Norse of God of Thunder. "That would never happen in the real world!" brays punter #341 and Mr. Movie suit. "We need to make this realistic!" -

You can't possibly expect reason from this cesspool. For the sake of argument, let's say that Captain America ends up being a very solid, successful and entertaining movie. It gets generally favorable reviews and is seen as holding its own against some of the better comic films of the past decade or so. The community here would rather hemorrhage internally at the sight of a costume they don't like than derive pleasure from the film as a whole. They would rather grief themselves and others within earshot into having zero joy from an enjoyable film, simply to bask in their own sense of superiority regarding one design element separated from its context. So, rhine1784, don't expect such a self-destructive geek mentality to be rational. Common sense is anything but common.

The Only Way To Make This Film Work Internationally Is...
by media messiah
...to make Captain America fight against some 5th Column force that threatens to betray America from within...and destroy the rest of the world as a result, with the primary scheme to destroy Europe, the Middle East, Asia...and South America, etc. There is a lot of anti-American sentiment in the world, much deserved, and some not, but the only way to blunt that, and to to attract foreign audiences to this movie and its namesake, is by showing Captain America as being a part of the American system, and then being an outsider to that system...ala Jason Bourne, working to correct what is secretly wrong with it, to stop a hidden cancer inside that he discovers; in that way, he becomes not just Captain America, but an everyman for the world as a symbol of freedom, representing a country, America, that is made-up of all people of the world--all nations, colors, religions, classes, and creeds. That should be the thrust, and the message of this movie--and can serve to attract all demos, nationally, and internationally. If they don't go with this angle, the film will feel like American propaganda...and will not go over well outside of the U.S.I would even do segments where the Tuskegee Airmen help him in a air battle scene, and similar fair.

by johndillingers20inchseveredcock
Looks good; can't wait. I'll just have to adjust to the Human Torch being dressed as Cap. I'll deal. I hope we get some kind of nod to the WWII style shield.
-
Huh? You mean the Edward Norton Hulk?
-
On the way out I said to the guy at the door "Captain America is back!"
-
It should be a military uniform, battle fatigues from a special unit of soldiers, special forces if you will, who are wiped-out, and the only member left is the Captain. This will help to explain away the costume, as something less of a costume, and more of a uniform, with reason.
-
They need to copy the way watchmen did the costumes. That is pretty much the standard I reckon.
-
they didn't have to resort to AICN review blurbs for the ads.
-
we are very proud of you and your new funny name
-
Yes, Alpha Team...that is what I would call the special forces military unit that the Captain belongs to, thus explaining the "A" on his costume, which later, some who witness him in action, after his team is wiped-out, start dubbing him, again, thanks to that capital "A": Captain America.
-
I approve of Cap's costume design.
Maybe the wings will come courtesy of Namor. Cap will see them and think "That looks pretty cool but I'd put them on the sides of the head and not the ankles."
I'm more curious myself as to where the shield is going to come from: will Tony Stark's dad give it to him? And will we be seeing Nick Fury in this WW2-set film? -
I think it needs to be an Idependence Day style alien biosuit left behind from a Skrull that Howard Stark caught, beat up and caged in his back yard.
Then S.H.E.I.L.D. reverse engineers the new technology and patriots it up so the aliens and everyone else know not to fuck with us and that is why fanboys should mostly be ignored. -
How come the Human Torch gets to play yet another hero? No fair. I want to read for the role.
-
I get more than likely as a nod to the bald eagle, but one of those things gets snagged on something during a firefight, you're fucked up.

Bitching about "A" + Bitching about no wings = EPIC WIN
by burnhollywood
So, I'm deducing this costume is almost perfectly designed, based on the level of wonks (rationally quibbling about having a target on the head) versus the fanboys (whining about some superfluous, fruity wings). Looks like the designers successfully split the difference of practicality balanced against sentimentality.
Seriously, it looks fine. -
Though I'd make the helmet bigger and more like a real helmet. I think they may have been afraid to stray too far.But that's just my preference. I think this pretty damn good, you whiny sons of bitches.

Should be pretty epic. The costume design fits in perfectly with the styles of the movie Iron Man & Thor. This should stand out perfectly with the movie version of the Invaders too. -
Want to see what they look like. Bring on all the costumes of the good and bad guys.
-
Unless Whedon writes them out, they're going to be in. Director Joe Johnston said this a couple of months back. Said they'd be in the 2nd half.
-
Glad they chose to go the with the Ultimates look rather than the winged mask and pirate boots. I like that the red stripes are part of the utility belt/harness thing. The helmet looks pretty cool too. I'm sure the costume provided quite a few challenges but I think they managed to pull off a really cool look for the Cap'n.
-
According the article, we'll see a nod to the original costume, or the version with wings? Really, what's to complain about here? At least it's not a Green Goblin debacle. That was an ill-thought costume adaptation. This still looks like Cap, and it may not even be the final look. I'm happy for now.Oh, and I just want to add that Hayley Atwell currently holds the top slot in my spank bank. Hummina hummina.
-
The wings represent eagle wings, right? Maybe the company/platoon/squad that Cap is part of or leads uses eagle wings as their insignia. It would then make sense for Cap to apply the wings to the sides of his helmet, as a personal customization he does to his uniform.
-
Only suggestions I would make are:1)Somehow add the wings to the mask. Paint them on or actually add them. It looks very bare. 2) Get rid of the brown on the uniform. Make the gloves red, white, or blue. Those are the colors of his uniform. Not brown. Also, I would go with darker colors. They would look outstanding. Seriously, look at football teams. Some of those with the darker oolors in their uniforms really standout.3) Get rid of the suspenders. Add the stripes.Again, it doesn't look that bad. Just tweak it somewhat. The shield looks great. Let's fix the rest.
-
That phrase has been said on here countless times about numerous comicbook-inspired films. And it has never ever been proven true. Ever. You're looking at the final look. His boots won't magically turn red by the end of the film, gay little wings won't appear on his head by the end of the film, and his pants certainly won't turn into the lower half of a ballet leotard by the end of the film. It is what it is. Get over it. I personally think it looks good. It might even be a bit too comicbooky.
-
This design could work, but Shoulder pads that strap on? Who straps on shoulder pads without a chest protector? Are his shoulders his weakness, I was unaware. Whats in the pouches, smoke bombs, m.r.e's, a compass, his I-pod. WTF? This could be better and yes he needs wings or it don't fly with me, but then again I am just another A-Hole with an opinion.
-
I would love to see that original shield, the medieval looking one, not the round one. I believe it only appeared in the first issue judging by the covers.
-
*IF* that alleged "nod" involves a more faithful adaptation of his original comicbook suit, it will be intended by the producers to convince you fanboys that men don't look very good in campy ballet leotards. It will be intended to dissuade you from your desire to see Capt. America in a blue leotard, not to honor you in some pathetic way.
-
"America! Fuck Yeah!"...love that song.
-
Seriously, how hard would it be to change the color of those to red. The costume is based upon the American flag. Give me a break.
-
to balance that mask/helmet -- I've played with a lot of skull helmet designs and wings/batears/whatever REALLY HELP (see Big Daddy -- the head ends up looking small without something to build the helmet)Then just make the brown boots/gloves/pouches RED -- Dye a couple of the belly sections red under the straps... and I think we have a winner
-
like this:http://captain-america.us/wallpaper/images/cap_quote.JPGThough I think I can get on board with this version, and I actually like the brown in it. Though I think the render is of a guy much bulkier than Chris Evans, so it'll be interesting to see how this outfit works on an actual person.
-
Steve Rogers was born in 1917. He enlisted, as a college student, in 1940 - age 23. He was frozen near the end on the war, 1945, so he was ~28. Chris Evans is 28 (28 next week). And for the record, its been 6 years since he first played the Human Torch. To think that he should still be stereotyped playing young, early 20s roles more than a half decade later is laughable.
-
sorry, but that was the first impression those pics had on me...
btw I think some ppl on here need a dose of THE FACTS when discussing the movie - from the imdb synopsis:
"...their Super Soldier is far too expensive a creation to risk in combat. So, they decide to put him to use as an army celebrity and parade him across Europe to boost morale by performing in USO shows for American troops. He is even given a costume that bear the colors of Old Glory for the stage..."
hence the gay-ass costume (btw shrewd Hollywood investors welcome the Gay-Market with open arms)
and now for some
SPOILERS
"...Captain America sacrifices himself and winds up frozen in ice for almost six decades! Revived, Steve Rogers now must join forces with new heroes and become an Avenger of the modern age"
http://shrunklink.com/eryw -
...it really does.
-
No I mean that over-grown Macy's Day parade Hulk from the Ang Lee movie. Of course I mean the Edward Norton Hulk. design wise it fits right in with Thor Cap and Iron man.
-
This'll tank bigtime overseas - to a lot of countries that really hated Bush Capt. might as well be wearing a swastika.
-
and the army was parading around a soldier they thought was too important to fight in front of me while I had to risk life and limb, I don't know if my morale would be boosted. Though maybe I'd be happy that I wasn't made to wear an outfit as silly as him.

-
This rendering of the Captain America suit looks amazing. Final judgement will be reserved until I see it live but based on this article, it looks awesome. But of course, when scouring through the talkback, I see a bunch of uneducated morons complaining that there are no wings on the helmet. What the fuck? Are you kidding me? Does anything satisfy you fuckheads? This is probably THE hardest comic book costume to pull off live and they NAILED IT. End of story! Stop complaining about it. I hate that we live in a "meh" society where nothing is appreciated, everything must be criticized.
-

Is there a variation of his uniform which replaces the helmet with a beanie (tuque)? You know, so the uncircumcised guys can feel represented too?
-

-
The more I look at the concepts the more I like it. First impression was putting the wings on the helmet but they may have tried it out and it may not have worked. So hats off to the design crew. Good job!
-
But aren’t comic books fantasy? Why do people insist on setting everything in the real world.
When someone makes a film, its “how will this translate” uh, I don’t know, just do the damn thing? Superman worked out just fine with his bright blue and red costume. Reeve looked the part and everyone treated Superman seriously, so did the audience. Caps costume is just as bright and he is supposed to be wearing the colors of the flag. Are we saying the flag is too colorful now?
Why does it all have to be realistic? The subject matter is not, so why not take it for what it is. Comics are modern day mythology, so treat it that way. Or should Zeus have a mechanical lightening generator?
I honestly don’t much care for what they do with these films anymore as the comics I love will still be in my possession, but I just wish they would just make a FANTASY adventure film that is fun with a good story. You wanna take a serious angle? Go for it! I liked the Ang Lee Hulk (but most hated it?) It was serious, but Hulk still looked like Hulk and they edited it like a comic, but no, not good enough. Everyone wants this gritty realism. I just wanted Captain America to be the damn hero I read in comics with the proper colors and costume.
Why is it so hard to translate it to film? No one has ever answered that (at least not to my satisfaction.)
Whatever, take my comments for what they are, my opinion, if you don’t agree that’s fine, but I just want a live action representation of what I read. Not a “reimagined” version. I don’t just don’t get it. People who claim it doesn’t translate obviously don’t have the imagination to visualize it, and also, I have a this feeling that guys who like heroes want everyone to think they are cool and by making these heroes darker and more real, they seem to cooler. Well not to me. I want what I read. Period. After watching these films, I pick up the comics and see that they are nothing alike? So what’s the ultimate goal here? Also, why wait for Avengers to do things.
Wait, lets save Mandarin for Iron Man part 37, yeah, and lets show the origin of Iron Man’s father, and then we can see the real Iron Man later???? This is what is happening.
Iron Man was a bad example here, but you get my meaning.
“Oh don’t worry, we’ll get the real captain America in part 2.”
Just my 2 cents.

Look at the detailing on the trousers. This is not the WW2 outfit.
I also suspect the WWII outfit may have the angular shield, not the round one. -
Wings on the helmet wouldn't look any gayer than the current design.
-
Superman and Batman are the only DC characters to hit the screens in the past 10 years. Marvel has had Blade, Spiderman, Daredevil, Fantastic Four, X-Men, Iron Man, and the Hulk. Granted, each of the Marvel movies were not great but at least they have a film library for a number of their characters.
-
I would also like to point out you did way too much research on the status of spandex in 1950 to act like a modicum of internal logic isn't important. Yes, we all get that this is sci-fi. I've heard the song and dance before. But as fellow "haters" Jon Favreau and Christopher Nolan understand, you have to at least try and make your world seem credible. If this design is intended for use in WWII then it could be worse. At least it's snazzy, and maybe the way it looks won't seem as bad in context. However my first impression is that something a little more period authentic would have been nice. Sorry that opinion bothers you.

The costume is too big and bulky...too many straps, too much padding, and what's with all the lines in the fabric? It's like the wardrobe people got carried away and decided it needed a little Spiderman in it. Captain America should be entirely purposeful, not decorative just for the sake of being decorative. His costume is flashy so that it makes a statement (making him the living embodiment of the flag), but otherwise it should be somewhat more purposeful and...well...less bulky and cheesy with the details.
Also, Captain America was always a serious acrobat, but that costume is a nightmare for mobility. And the helmet would not only destroy peripheral vision, but he wouldn't be able to hear out of it, either. Not good. I think they were moving in the right direction, they just went a little overboard (typical of Hollywood). Also, it's interesting that he's wearing a gun holster in one photo, but not in the others. -
this guy is 100 pounds heavier than Chris.
-

-

-
The straps and shield are bright red, but the gloves and boots are brown???? That really doesn't make a hell of a lot of sense. It doesn't make the suit more realistic or purposeful by making those items brown when the other aspects are a nice bright red. Just plain stupid.
I'm hoping they fix the issues with the modern-day version of the costume...fixing all the issues that Cap. would have had with the original.
I'm also curious to know why Cap's shield was in pieces in IRON MAN 2. -
His uniform(not costume)is supposed to protect him from small caliber ammunition.

His entire post-art career is owed to a rolodex of his drinking buddies being fan favorites.I think I've just lost a huge amount of faith in an "Avengers" flick being anything but dreck inspired by Ultimates crap now.

ATTENTION HOLLYWOOD DOUCHEBAGS - CAPTAIN AMERICA HAS A BIG STAR ON HIS CHEST. A BIG AMERICAN STAR THAT REACHES FROM NIPPLE TO NIPPLE, GODDAMMIT! Not, I repeat, NOT, a tiny, nearly invisible mini-star that stands out in relief just like the fucking ridiculous mini-"S" that Bryan "Let's turn Superman into a super-creep" Singer gave us. Way to make a very simple costume over-complicated, you nimrods.

Hey, what does everyone think about the colors?
by battle_royale_with_cheese
And did someone say something about him having wings on his helmet? Not sure, seems like there hasn't been much conversation about that detail.
-
Those images embiggened ME.

Just a few simple changes and it's close to perfect: http://tinyurl.com/2e5blap

It's actually not bad.

Whats with all this gay bashing when i see so many of you dumb yuppies prancing about like wimps yourselves. With all this metrosexual bullshit you guys sure are one to talk!
-
and throw his shield around and hot babes.
-
Along with my anal virginity.
-
Wings are very hard to pull off without looking silly. I was watching some special features on one of the LOTR EE's and Richard Taylor and co were talking about having one hell of a hard time adapting the winged helmets for the Gondorian soldiers. It took them a long time to come up with what they did and 90% of their trials were truly dumb.
Two little parakeet wings on the side of his head may fly on a comic book page but I bet they looked gaaaaayyyy when they tried it here. -
..oh bitch bitch bitch. I will openly call myself a geek and nerd, but come on. You guys sound like the dorkiest bunch of dorks who ever dorked. Well, you probably never dorked anything, but you get the point....dorks

You're starting to freak me out bud.

My super serum's about to pop.

Little wings would've done. Though by no means a deal breaker, his head is definitely in need of the wings.
-
just want to point out that cap doesn't have wings; what's up with that?
-
your not helping things at all flamer.

I mean, you don't mess with icons, and them wings is definitely iconic.

... looks like he's walking through a party, dispensing high fives.
High five, Cap! Niiiiice. -
I mean Dark Knight. My bad!

And on that bed is either Wonder Woman, lying face up, or Superman lying face down.

"What do they mean, I'm wearing a cock-shaped helmet? It doesn't look like a cock! It doesn't look like a cock! It doesn't look like a cock!"

Captain Canuck. Which seriously exsists. Seriously.

... camouflage for fighting on a battlefield draped in American flags.
Although, why is the target on his forehead in the shape of an "A"? -
... Because our national flag is red, white and blue and has stars on it too.
I think Sam Worthington should play the role, and then they can release it down here as Captain Australia.
Although, Captain Australia wouldn't wear a cock-shaped helmet. He'd just go bare-headed and draw an A on his melon with zinc cream. -
even with a pair of semi-ghey wings on his helm, Cap would still be twice as masculine as the average yuppie. In fact I believe the majority of American males have devolved into being bi-sexual.

Are wings on Captain Americas helmet metro-sexual?
by captain_americas_cock_shaped_helmet
Story at 11!
-
Thor and Odin look gay?
-
FAIL! FAIL! FAIL! Ultimates was shit!
Stop copying that crap and use the original Jack Kirby Costume!! -
They should include it in the Captain America outfit and then include a plot thread in The Avengers movie, where Captain America and Thor have a contest to see who has the biggest head-wings. The loser would get teased by the others and leave the group in a huff, slamming the door on his way out.
-
It also had CONSTANTINE, SWAMP THING, WATCHMEN, THE LOSERS, V FOR VENDETTA, etc. Regardless of anyone's opinons of the films, DC has always had a more eclectic roster than Marvel. Now...JONAH HEX (but fingers crossed).
-
The one that goes... "When Captain America throws his mighty shiiiieeeeeld..."
They should score the movie to that. -
It's like a freak'n bulls eye for snipers.
-
he is meant to be a symobl, the wings are part of this symbol, his outfit is not really that practical (from a soldier's perspective), its not camo coloured, he had a big shiny shield, he has a big A on his forehead. You either have him in full army gear, or you have him standout like he was intended to, none of this inbetween nonsense.
-
Captain Condom!!!
"Remember men that when you liberate those European dames to always use a rubber, you want to come home nice and clean for your broad at home" -
We're getting a period Captain America feature film by the director of ROCKETEER and THOR with Asgard goodies feature. It is, beyond belief. Not to mention the concept of a huge budgeted GREEN LANTERN film.
-
The helmet doesn't look right without them :-(
-
Think people will either be in the camp of you either do it properly or not at all.
Whereas some (think like yourself) will be grateful that they gave it a shot.

I got a good feeling about this and Green Lantern
by captain_americas_cock_shaped_helmet
Like I had when I saw the Phantom Menace trailer.
-
It might be ok in the comic, but I'd have trouble thinking he really means business if I thought he/they had put together a costume and stuck wings on it. That's like taking "the human spider" seriously before Parker updates the costume.
-
has lasted as long as it has. This "now" look for The Avengers will pass its expiration date quickly, dating the movie.
-
either get gutted by a knife wielding Bucky or Union Jack before Cap even comes on the scene, or roasted to a crisp by Torch and Toro.
-
but now...The Red Skull....That is the make or break for this Fucker, and it is gonna be damned hard to pull off and not look fucking ridiculous.
-
so is it like those FF movies never happened now in this universe of Captain america, Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk and Thor? Is Raimi's spiderman considered a part of it or is the reboot the one that will tie in or even not be a part of it?
-
subtract the MK3 subzero suspenders.
-
Look down at your cock. Does it have wings on it? No? Well, there's your reason - wings look out of place on cock-shaped things.
-
I said the same thing in the last cap article.
-
he's probably gonna earn it by the end of the movie like kirk earning his gold uniform.....seriously though they need to change that friggin first avenger prefix it's so insulting.
-
when you look at pictures of a man in a costume.
-
I just read it on wiki...goes to show I should read the article titles on this site more clearly also.
-
Now, when I dress my trouser-hero up as Captain America, I can dispense with the uncomfortable adhesive wings and simply draw an A on the knob.
Although nothing could be worse than the time I tried to do it up to resemble the Human Torch. The smell of burned hair cleared out the playground. -
I get semi hard seeing hard cocks in a porno. Maybe I'm part gay. I'd prolly have sex with a young Bratt Pitt or Tom Cruise, I mean, who wouldn't?
-
And the Germans are assholes. And all the fanboy moviegoing audience are pussies. Now the dick is going to fuck the pussies at the box office, but dicks also fuck assholes. Either way...Capt America, fuck yeah!
-
Love them. Seriously, this looks cool. Imagine this battle-dirty.
-
although CA was never a great character to begin with...
-
Let the Ultimates have it's way with Nick (Samuel Jackson ugh) Fury ONLY.
-
American symbol my ass....
The romans used the eagle way before the inbred states of America commited genocide on it's original inhabitants.
A blue eyed, blonde haired superhuman?
Can you spell Aryan?
Very funny indeed that good ol Cap is based on Hitlers concept of a perfect human....so cry about his wings some more...
But then...you flag mastrubating fags never were good at history.
-
It could look a hell of a lot worse. There were a million ways to screw this up, but I think they've avoided the major pitfalls (like giving him the black suit he wore when he was fired and went around as simply "The Captain," because they thought black leather would look better on the battlefield or something). Is it perfect? No, but they have all the right stuff in the mix, and if the movie is great (please, oh please, oh please) a few minor problems with the way the suit looks won't matter.
-
anyone who doesn't like it, is a fat fucking basement dwelling nerd of the the highest order.
-
is in need of a Draino enema. It will clean out his brain.
-
I live in an attic. And, anyone who does like this is a philistine. I can't believe people like the modern fashion designer-y stitching on this thing, and the unnecessary and tacky looking shoulder pads that have straps. Why are they strapped down? Wouldn't they need straps on the arms and neck as well? Talk about silly. Modern just means it'll date The Avengers movie quicker, as "modern" becomes "outdated" in a few years. There is a reason why the iconic suit has lasted as long as it has. Look at Iron Man -- there are only so many permutations they can go through until they'll have to go back to square one. The iconic look for Cap is fine, as long as it is made with quality materials and construction.
-
are up at Bleeding Cool. It's like Christmas.
-
I hope these are just works in progress and not the final look. I can accept the Ultimates inspired costume for present-day Cap but the straps and shoulder pads look a little contrived. I'm sure someone thought they were being clever by disguising the stripes but now there's too much negative space (white) around the waist. I also agree that the helmet would look better with wings painted on the sides but can accept that it doesn't have them since they're not depicted in the Ultimates books either. This helmet gives Cap a look reminiscent of that from the old serials, which come to think of it wasn't that cool. But, then again, I also think it would look better if it didn't cover the ears. Anyway, I hope the final design does Cap justice the way the Spider-Man and Iron Man movies did for them.
-
Plays in my head when I think of Captain America.
-
Again, this design looks fantastic.
If you want wings, go check out the 1990 Captain America movie. -
I guaranfuckintee every nerd boy on this site would be complaining about them looking stupid.
The costume design looks too modern? I'm no expert, but, if the government can develope a "super soldier serum" in the 30's, they can probably make some high-tech armor too. Think about it.
I've never been a huge Captain America fan, at all really, but I think that costume design is pretty damn good. Probably as good as it's gonna get. -
http://imgur.com/5I0Ul.jpg
although maybe it could have been improved with wings - you know, like a tampon... -

on screen with some low lighting! I'll try to stay open minded about this one but it's gonna be tough.

It's a fan rendering of a description by someone we don't even know was telling the truth and saw anything. Maybe he did. maybe he didn't. But this is all a friend of a friend's friend stuff.
-
It's one of the many ways he tries to be "precious", but ends up just making me want to punch him.
-
but is going to look a hell of a lot better when we see the real outfit. Also need to bear in mind it's 1 or two suits he will be wearing in the movie. Joe Johnson has already said this.
-
Fans doing 2 minutes of photoshop make it look way cooler.
-
in the photos released so far. LOLOLOL I'm not going to be able to take that one too seriously. Also this film will BOMB internationally.
-
The more I look at Cap, the more I love it. (HE HAS SUSPENDORS!) But the Thor costume looks like something I would make for a costume party. So uninspired. Maybe it will look better on screen, but that pic is pretty sad. Make the chest thingies energy like in the Ultimates or something. Looks cheap as hell as it is now.
-
I'm talking about the comics; I couldn't give a flying f about the craptacular movies. Oh, but on that point, although the Batman movies are the only good current DC movies thus far (Superman Returns was a bust and I don't count Watchmen), it's SO much better than the recent spate of Marvel's movies as to make said movies all but totally irrelevant. They make alot of money, sure, but they're not good movies.
-
Cap in WW2 = No Wings
Cap given a second chance at life in present time = Wings on Helmet.
Like a Phoenix he has risen from the ashes... that kind of thing.
-
And they should enable him to fly.
-
How would they look in reality, what material should they be made of ?
How do you stop Cap's head from looking like a condom with an A on it -
is the bigger worry from the sake of costume and concept, but has the better guy "behind the wheel", compared to Cap.
You don't get someone so consistently mediocre as Johnston. The guy would have always got C+s (ok maybe October Sky was a B) in school, never shined, but never failed miserably. -
THOU ART NOT THOR!
-
looks like a neo nazi to me...how ironic
-
laser pants DC have done well in the past 5 years with Batman. Thats it. Make mine Mavel
-
Kind of a silly looking costume. What purpose do the snap-lock suspenders serve besides holding up his pants? And what would Captain America need to carry in a utility belt? Cigarettes? Cap-a-rang? Cap-Rope? Cap-Shark Repellent? Shield-wax?
-
Jun 03, 2010 6:30:55 AM CDT
this cap makes me want to be american. bring on union jack!!!
by jonny_boba
everyone seems to be toatlly confussed with this being the WW2 cap. It clearly isnt and quotes over at empire seem to prove that http://www.empireonline.com/news/story.asp?NID=28040 its modernised and the material even looks similar to batmans suit circa dark knight. i heard tell that they are going to use the kite shield in the WW2 one (which would be awesome) i think what we are seing here is captain america 21st century avengers style and in my opinion he looks badass
-
Expect the cowl to come off early and often. Unlike many costumed characters, the mask doesn't really add anything.
-
Marvel is certainly more *popular* than DC (due to the craptacular movies aimed directly at the Lowest Common Denominator), but DC puts out better books. Not just Batman, but the whole pantheon of characters -- especially the whole Green Lantern thang which totally kicks ass, not to mention the Vertigo line. All Marvel has is Spiderman and Xmen/Wolverine, both of which SUCK now. Oh, and 35 billion Avengers titles; all of which are boring.
-
Are they going to remove the wings off of "The Flash"... in the Flash movie that's in pre-production?
-
After the X-men chickened out on anything resembling the original suits, I'll gladly accept this as being reasonably close to the original.
-
Seriously, how could you NOT want that winged helmet for Thor? (It should be an exact duplicate of the way Jim Starlin illustrated it in the classic AVENGERS ANNUAL #7 from 1977.) AWESOME helmet.
-
Flash got bolts.
-
Won't always work on the big screen. This WWII costume is perfect for that era. Lycra/spandex whatever makes no sense years before it was invented. A high tech suit makes no sense. Besides: cap ends up in the here and now. His costume is likely to update during the movie or Avengers.
-
...because despite a solid effort with the sleeves and torso of Thor's design, it LOOKS TOO MODERN. If you want modern touches, don't leave the Viking influence so far behind. The bracelets, pants, and boots should have a more classic influence (Jim Starlin). Rememeber Thor's yellow boots from the 70's, with the high points at the knees...and how the lower leg had the look of straps? I would follow that influence of design with the exception of color. The bracelets, boots, and belt should be MORE influenced from the past. And most of all, Thor should have the helmet. Unfortunately, their modern design won't allow the visual conflict of the classic helmet...so my hopes of Thor having the helmet are GONE. Design = C-
-
IF IT LOOKS BETTER IN THE MOVIE THEN I WILL GIVE EXTRA CREDIT. D-
-
...because I can already see him in action. The costume should work wonderfully on film! Captain America Design = A-
-
part of a harness that he can strap his shield onto.
And as for the pouches who knows? Rations, explosives, matches, compass, twine, flints and tinder? -
...Hostess Fruit Pies, of course.
-
Because the Hostess Fruit Pies comment was genius. How have we not had a Hostess product placement in one of these films yet?
-
I totally agree with your Hostess Fruit Pies theory. It's the only way to pacify the Hulk's cravings for delicious fruit filling!
-
it belongs on the set of Battlefield Earth 2
How sad that all sense of Myth is gone, replaced with some low level tech shit. This is the God of Thunder and he feels like he has lost every single connection to the nature elements that he is suppose to control. They better light that film really dark, I can imagine that those pics are for merchandising concept only with that flat light all over the place, maybe if they light the Thor film with candles it will look ok. That suit is shit. -
...looks like ass (and it does). Get a load of Thor's "weekend gay bike club" outfit over on comicbookresources.com! Yeah Marvel... looks like that Disney merger was a (chortle) GREAT IDEA!
-
Fucking fanboys would bitch regardless. When did we become such a jagged lot?
Listen up, we are getting a THOR and a CAPTAIN AMERICA films...I am in geek heaven, until they come out I am holding my venom. -
Just enough influence from the later 'Comedian' costume to qualify as gritty & realistic... But the REAL bonus here is the BROWN LEATHER!!! Gloves & ammo pouches are all believable extrapolations from WWII-Era miltary gear, and the boots look like a cross between Corcoran Jump Boots and M-43 Combat Service Boots. Yeah, I'm geeking on this one!!!
-
mmmmmm
-
pretty cool otherwise
-
...and will be animated to reflect his emotional state.
-
costume, and I think it works really well, but as others have said, sheesh...that Thor costume is bad. It almost looks gay......
-
If they make him Mark Millar's jingoistic military man this will fail(both here and abroad) because that guy is an asshole. Though I don't see this since Joss Whedon is writing Captain America and Avengers. I also hope they don't skip on the shield slinging and acrobatic fighting style. If Captain America is just some military guy on magic steroids barking orders and having nothing else extraordinary about him it will be so dull. Not having the wings IS a mistake. We've seen plenty of modern artist(most notable John Cassaday) update the wings and the chainmail and make it look cool. I know it seems like a silly thing to nit pick but there are somethings that the powers that be never trust to suspension of disbelief whether it be wings on Captain America's mask/helmet, The Phoenix force on Jean Grey or an adaptation of I Am Legend that includes ACTUAL FUCKING VAMPIRES. Those of us with verisimilitude and imagination know how cool these thing would be on film but all the short sighted, simpleton crybabies of the world outnumber us. It's sad.
-
...and don't care about the wings.
-
I hope they don't have him wear that costume in Branaugh's film and then lose the cape and the arms for Avengers so he looks like "Ultimate Gay Environmentalist Leather Boy". God this is all Mark Millar's fault which means really it's Warren Ellis' fault for making The Authority so awesome. If the Authority wasn't a hit then Millar and Quitely would have never done their run. We would have never seen 'The Americans' and Quesadilla and Jemas would have never hired Millar to turn the Avengers into a watered down version of the murdering fascist parody they did in The Authority. Jim Lee's Heroes Reborn crap would have been a better template for Marvel movies than the Ultimate verse and thats saying something because Heroes Reborn was garbage too.
-
Chris Evans is a great choice for a young Steve Rogers and this costume design is awesome. That is all.
-
with those platey things
http://tinyurl.com/26jqmwd -
...push Yoko off your belly, be careful not to roll over and crush her, lay there and fart for a few minutes, then get the f**k outta bed and post something about the lame-ass Thor costume already! Geez, remember when Harry used to get the scoop on s**t like this all the time? Harry's aging faster than the Wachowski siblings career sank!
-
All those who chose to oppose his shield must yield.
If he's lead to a fight and a duel is due,
the red and the white and the blue will come through,
when Captain America throws his mighty shield! -
..that kinda sucks...
-
Having some trouble there buddy?
-
Only quibble with Cap's is the glaring absence of the wings. Cool helmet, sure, but it makes him look bald from the front. Fix it!! As for Thor,......uh...what happened? Looks pretty much all wrong! Really disappointing :(
-
..got a st-st-st-studdering problem today...
-
but seriosuly, where the hell is the Thor post for his wacky suit? where the hell is his helmet? his suit looks like the one he wears to the dinner table when Odin brings his new girlfriend around for the first time to meet his son...not something he wears to battle. the pics should include the jingle BY MENNEN.
-
I mean really it looks like one of those cheap costumes you see in the stores right before halloween, they might as well have just given chris hemsworth a poncho with thor on it
-
Just doesn't seem to evoke any sense of Norse god otherworldliness. I was cool when I saw the first production still of Thor, but the pants/boot combo seems ill-inspired. Oh well, too late now.
-
it looks awesome BUT it looks like a modern day suit, not something from th3 40's. if they were to update it after he gets thawed what will they change? change the brown to red and get rid of the pouches? that's all they'd need to change as the rest looks modern. it seems the designers were afraid to give him the baggy clothes with real helmet look... a shame, although at least he definitely looks like Cap to me and is far better than that supposed Thor get-up.
-
maybe that's why they only showed the upper part of Thor, chest armor and cape... cause the rest of him is very unimpressive. the pants seem like something out of X-MEN, not that's not a compliment.
-

They need to get rid of the lip at the back of the helmet
by redbull_werewolf
because without the wings, it really makes cap look like a penis

Looks gay...

With a capital A for America! This is so cool!

fucking hood ornament.
They could paint them on like they look in the Ultimates but you would all bitch about that.

The Cap costume is frustrating. On first blush, it looks like Cap. But then you realize that the red stripes on his abdomen are almost by accident due to the straps (so, if he takes them off, he doesn’t have red there? Why?). With the feathers missing, you kinda realize that they were an integral part of the iconic image and are missed. Now he looks like some bald guy. The colors are stupid and you realize that the filmmakers missed the point of Captain America. In this jaded age, a super-powered character whose costume is based on the American Flag boosting the morale of a nation that actually didn’t care much about fighting WWII in Europe (they cared more about fighting the Japanese) doesn’t relate to folks who want “gritty” and “realistic”. The fact is that he’s a living embodiment of the American Flag. How would you like it if the American flag were muted to the colors of the movie version of Captain America? If you think about it, his colors weren’t “impractical” on the battlefield. He was a super soldier. His mission is different than that of the rest of the American troops. Sure, Cap’s bright colors would attract the fire and troops of the Nazis – so he can deflect the firepower with his invincible shield and draw it away from the rest of the American troops, and he can beat the crap out of the oncoming Nazi troopers with his enhanced super-strength, distracting them while the rest of the American troops can go about their business of winning the war! Duh. These guys just don’t get it.

has attracted that attention of the Okay Fashions bot. Nice work, everyone.
-
I like the rest of the costume but those wings would have really made the helmet.
-
on the sides of the helmet...make them look kinda futuristic, it would have worked.
-
They gave the costume a "superhero" kind of feeling. Why must they change everything, yet invent so little they constantly rehash old stuff. Whether it's speedos on Supes or off-center "4s" on the FF, somebody decides not to leave well enough alone. "Hey, it lasted 60 years, why change it?" End of rant. Have a wonderful day.
-
movie. Make a Marvel conan movie- duh. I would go see a Fanboola Eddie The Gorilla Face Girl movie marketed towards that comic's target audience before this. Ya know? Fat, lonely dykes.
-
Brown?!? BROWN?!!? I guess they should have added an "S" instead of an "A". S, as in Shit!
-
Where we're going we don't need ... wings.
-
has that been mentioned already?
-
Fuck it straight to hell.
-
I'd like to see anyone who says this, walk into the Philadelphia Eagles' locker room and say it out loud.
-
true, you'd probably get raped in the butt by those fruits for saying such a thing.
-
I was skimming through this board late last night -- reading all of "wing" back and forth debating -- but my eyes got tired, and then I fell asleep on the couch. But I was thinking the exact same thing and was going to post it today since your analogy to the Philadelphia Eagles...or side emblems on the sides of ANY NFL team's helmets...is a perfectly response to those saying "Oh, wings would look gay on the helmet of a man."Apparently, we don't have too many football fans in here. Maybe we do have too many geeks who never leave the basement of their parents house!
-
...But he needs wings.
-
With Cap's, Thor's, Nick Fury's, and I'm sure Hawkeye's look, Marvel wants to make the Ultimates movie and not an Avengers movie. Is Mark Millar rewriting the screenplay for these movies? No wonder Chris Evans was cast to play Cap because it will be the Ultimate version (who's an ASSHOLE).
-
Probably largely due to their fans pelting Santa with snowballs and cheering Michael Irving getting a career-ending injury, but I generally can't stand Philadelphia sports teams, and DEFINITELY can't stand the Eagles.-Cheers

Ultimates Cap = looks like fucking SHIT. Do the REAL Cap.
by big dumb ape
In my opinion, the look of the Ultimates Cap is truly shitacular. It's fucking LAME. Right above my post, Shogunshin posted to links to that look (for those unfamiliar with it) and it would just be fucking LAUGHABLE in a movie and on the big screen. Seriously, the Ultimates version doesn't even make any fucking sense -- it's one of those bullshit things done in comics where a comics creator thought he'd change stuff because he wanted to put his particular take on a character, and franly Mark Millar's take on Cap was about as rancid as any shit I crap out when I have diarrhea. And enough with this bullshit "Cap needs to look realistic and his outfit needs to look like the Ultimates version, like a WWII" soldier's outfit" argument. For crying out loud, its a FUCKING BIG BUDGET SUMMER POPCORN SUPERHERO MOVIE. Seriously, you think anyone buying a ticket for this thing...a movie about a guy who gets a needle shoved into his arm and turns into a superhero...who is THEN going meet OTHER superheros in his debut film (The INVADERS)...and who is THEN going to team up with even MORE costumed superhero names like "Iron Man", "Thor" and "The Hulk" and even "Giant Man" or "The Wasp" (depending on they round out the team) to form a whole GROUP of costumed people called "The Avengers" should be based on REALITY? Are you fucking kidding me???Audiences would laugh the Ultimates version right off the screen. They would instantly be saying "Wow, what happened? The Spider-Man suit was perfect... Iron Man looked cool... they even forked out the money to GGI the Hulk, so he looked cool...but I guess Marvel chinced out and couldn't afford to create a decent Cap costume."Not to mention, just imagine the bad press Marvel would get from people crying "What, you're too chicken shit to actually do a Captain America costume? Because you're afraid foreign audiences won't want to see the American flag so prominently onscreen?" Anyone who is pushing that line of logic has their head up their ass. The movie's called CAPTAIN AMERICA. So, I have news for you: if foreign ticket buyers are going to be anti-American in their sentiment, it won't fucking matter what he's wearing and you should do something more in line with the classic Kirby design SINCE YOU HAVE NOTHING TO LOSE ANYWAY.
J_Man in his post above explains it best WHY something more in line with the classic Kirby design should be done. Emotionally it was supposed to inspire the troops in the field and it WAS supposed to be fucking bright and look like the flag. J_Man (and others who've pointed this out) are right that the flag color scheme even make sense in a WWII movie, since then Cap would be leading troops and attracting gunfire toward himself and his shield. But the main reason is incredibly obvious: The whole fucking POINT of the classic Kirby design -- and whole POWER to the character itself -- is that he IS supposed to look (to any enemy) like a LIVING, BREATHING AMERICAN FLAG COMING FUCKING RIGHT AT YOU. Helloooo! THAT is the symbolism and effect the costume is clearly SUPPOSED to have.Snookeroo said it best when he said "Captain America can carry a huge bright red, white and blue shield, but giving him red gloves and boots is too much? Fuckheads." He also posted this link below, where he made some adjustments to make the costume look more Cap appropriate by simply adding the wings (to symbolize the American Eagle) and changing the glove/boot color. I agree, make the colors a touch brighter and more flag-like, increase the size of the star on his chest a slight bit too (which someone else suggested, and likewise offered up an aero-look wing design that was nicely done too), and THEN you've got something...:http://tinyurl.com/2bqnlglAll in all, not a bad design. I'm actually shocked that this could look fairly cool. But to use a football analogy, they've gotten the costume to the 5-yard line. So tweak it a final bit and push it over the goal line! -
hmmmmmmm....nah, looks fine as is.
-
Oh, one final rant. Giving Cap brown gloves and boots makes NO fucking sense. Think about it...You're Steve Rogers. You've been given the super soldier serum by the military and turned into Captain America, a superhero. So now either you...or perhaps in script for the film, the military itself...decides to create a costume. An actual costume for you to run around in.So you make this thing that's red, white and blue and you pattern it after the American flag. So you go out and get a form fitting helmet and even paint a big "A" on it...you put a big star on your chest, like the field of stars on the flag...you decide to carry around a bright red, white and blue shield...and you even give yourself a utility pouch belt. But THEN you notice it crosses over the white of your torso, so you paint JUST THAT CERTAIN PART OF THE STRAPS RED, so it will look like the strips of the flag. And let's face it, I'm going to assume he painted that portion red or it was specially made that way (again, by the military which is outfitting him) Well, gee -- if you've gone to ALL that trouble, to where you've even thought about creating a "red stripe look" -- why the hell WOULDN'T you go that one final extra step and self-paint or have made red boots and gloves to complete the look?So given all the OTHER suspension of disbelief that a movie watcher is supposed to have for a person who decides to strap on a fucking costume to then do incredible things on-screen, why the hell WOULDN'T Steve Rogers (or the military) have thought of red gloves and boots given the visual look they were clearly going for ANYWAY?Again, it's like my football analogy above of getting to the 5-yard line, but then you got lazy and didn't cross the goal line. Even for a summer superhero movie, I would find it pretty silly and laughable that somehow IN the movie they try to explain a guy dressing up this way...patterning himself after the flag...and yet then either Rogers or the Pentagon was too fucking stupid to look at the final outfit and realize brown is NOT a color on the flag.
-
all in all, i think the suit is pretty shit. brown gloves and boots? looks awful - and i'm british. but the real thing that irritates me is the piddly little "A" on his head - just awful. If marvel were too embaressed to make a cap film, they shouldn't have bothered. this feels like they started, shit themselves and then just bottled it, making a suit that was neither an emblem or a realistic battle dress. what a disappointment. hope thats not it, but i get the feeling it is. Looks pretty shite really man. boo hiss
-
Superman embodies the "American ideal" that Captain America is supposed to represent WAY better.
-
He definitely needs fucking wings on his cock helmet. They COULD make them look cool imo.

STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT THE GAY FEATHERS ON HIS HEAD. Nobody's going to paint them onto his helmet, either. Batman retained his ears because they make him look like a demon. This movie was made before Obama got rid of don't ask, don't tell, so Capt. America's supposed to represent heterosexuality, truth, honor, integrity, justice, and really, really big guns.
-
Do you really want a gay soldier? Then dress him in a patriot-colored leotard and pirate boots. And then put fluffy white feathers on the sides of his head.
-
I certainly hope that the majority of winers on here are just kids. It would pain me to think that there are so many people out there who dislike it when comicbook films are given realistic looks. You guys are the same ones who said that Wolverine needed yellow spandex and a mask, and that Batman needed to wear his underoose on the outside of his pants.
-
..."Do you really want a gay soldier?"
Try and find a time machine and travel forward to the 21st Century.
What a prick! -
Hey I'm just sitting back and watching you youngsters ruin the USA. Do whatever you want. In fact, do everything you want. That's what will be the end of you.
In any case, I actually didn't mean it like that. I should've written, "Do you really want Capt. America to be an openly flaming gay soldier?"
And, yeah, I'm a prick. A huge one, thanks. -
You're a 45-year-old gay man named Jim.
-
The "bear" part of your name alludes to the lifestyle of one who, in slang, is referred to as a "bear," which involves your being an obese bearded man with a desire for young boys.

Fuck Kobe
-
The fact that we are actually gonna be sitting through a period piece involving Cap from the director of the ROCKETEER...that;s enough to make one soul himself. On top of that...the fact that they apparently nailed the costume...coupled with a budget & some artistic freedom...you just can't go wrong. Can't wait.

And I live in L.A. Lost interest in Lakers back in, what, '80s?

How else is Hawkeye, who's gotta come along, call him "winghead?"

I could not agree more - about Kobe being a dickwad.

costume for modern times. Trying to "tween" the two is f%cking fail.
Put him in Camo and fatigues and save the "walking American Flag" sh!t for post-icecube. Sheesh. -
Hence the name CAPTAIN AMERICA. If another studio like FOX was making this, the disasterous costume would be expected. But Marvel Ent. is and making the costume PC to not "offend" the overseas market is BULLSHIT. How did Truth, Justice, and other "stuff" work out for Warner Bros? You can be sure that Chris Nolan isn't going to leave out the American Way with his Superman reboot! Yes, Marvel Studios has a Daddy and his name is Chris Nolan (2008, 2010, and 2012).

Stwolf: "Do you really want a gay soldier? And put fluffy white feathers on the sides of his head."I direct you several posts up, where someone correctly pointed out...Triple_J_72: "I'd like to see anyone who says this, walk into the Philadelphia Eagles locker room and say it out loud."
-
wait wrong superhero.
-
...actually, I am 32 and married. I have no interest in young boys - sorry, you'll have to look elsewhere if you want sex!
-
...love the pic of you and your boyfriend. Which one is you - the one with the bad acne and terrible haircut...or the one with bad acne and a terrible haircut?

will the remove the the wings of lightning / bolts of lightning / lightening wings / from Flash?
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/b/b8/Flash_DVD.jpg -
I just wanted to clarify any and all ambiguity for nerds who may call them bolts of lightning... or "wings of lightning." I love me some John Philip Sousa.
-
What, you need a fucking initial to remind you that he represents America? He's already got a fucking flag wrapped around him.
To me it looks like how jocks and bullies would write words on nerds' face or back or whatever to humiliate them. Like someone wrote it on his head while he slept and it stands for "asshole" or something. -
If you have a problem with the costume or think the movie is going to suck, then don't pay to see it. Every time you buy a movie ticket, you are casting a vote for what Hollywood thinks you want to see. They don't take any of your reasons for seeing the movie into consideration. They just look at how much money it made and crank out more of the same crap if it did well. You have the power to stop Hollywood from doing this to your favorite properties by not buying their tickets and supporting the people who keep screwing them up. Would your life really have been incomplete if you hadn't seen Ang Lee's Hulk? Elektra? The Fantastic Four movies? Indy 4? They were horrible wastes of time that probably just left you feeling unsatisfied anyway. Do yourself a favor and save your money. If you must see it, then let some other guy rent it and just borrow it. Pass this on. Tell you friends. Twitter it. Facebook it. Just get the word out and stop this from happening over and over again.
-
although I think it does need the wings to break up the helmet a little. Besides, thats just the way Cap is supposed to look. Speaking of which, am I the only one who misses the chain mail design of his chest armor? I think it would look better than the molded leather look going on in these images...but that's just one fellows opinion.

to this helmet......

First, hats off to a fairly compelling argument. I'm still not totally in agreement, but you make a decent point about demoralizing the opponent. I'll argue it doesn't matter because, him being a superhero and demolishing the Axis Army and totally devastating the opposition will do that anyway. Still, I'd say you articulate your points pretty well.Second, the gloves & boots being red . . . Nobody who wants the bright American Flag colors is going to agree with me, but the boots & gloves are the most likely to get dirty from tromping through mud, picking stuff up, shooting guns, etc. It could make for a more practical choice for concealing dirt (if they're paying any mind to real world sensibilities), and not as likely to soil the American Flag colors.Final point; Just because somebody like me disagrees about the color scheme and is arguing for some anchor in the real world does not mean we're morons who don't get it. We're just part of the audience, of both the movies AND the comics. If you look back, they have had to make allowances to characters and tweak the science. I can suspend disbelief on the technology they create. However, they are firmly planting themselves in a science fiction world. They created a fake-yet-practical science for Tony Stark in the Iron Man movies. They have had to change things about Hulk as we learn things about radiation (and things that were given as explanation for his genesis are fairly widely known to be impossible). I believe they've modified the scientific explanation for the Fantastic Four (again, because as-written their origins don't make any sense given what we know about the science of things).Without writing a book, I think they can go the all bright-colored living/breathing symbolic flag route, or the more pragmatic muted color, realism look, and have either work. There are just different strategies involved. The first, they have to explain (or ignore altogether) how he fits into modern warfare tactics, and maybe they just fly him in and he drops down, kicks tail, and then goes back to base and isn't part of a regular platoon. The second way, he's more natural looking and seems more period-specific which I think is kind of cool. Either way, the enemy is going to be able to figure out pretty quickly the soldier in ANY shade of blue (with red & white accents) zipping around like some a try-out for the Olympics and taking out large numbers of their companions with a flying shield is probably the Captain America super soldier fellow they've been hearing about.Regardless, if they do a serious job with the acting and the physics of his combat and action, I've come to the point that I couldn't care less how they do the suit. They're not going to please everybody, so I'm not going to worry about it. I think the wings would help with how the profile of Captain America looks, but really that's not a major gripe of mine. And the color scheme, I'll deal with whatever they throw out realizing the different sides they have to try to please probably means they have to do some sort of compromise. So it will come down to whether or not they can make a compelling Captain America-centric WWII movie. I think they can, and remain optimistic. Still, seeing all of the heated opinions on the cosmetics, I've disengaged from that. It's arguably the most iconic American-based hero ever. I'll let the actions decide if the character is a success more than his uniform.-Cheers

Chris Evans will single-handedly destroy the films from this point on because he is a joke as Captain America. He won't be taken seriously and you can't have an Avengers without a serious leader. He will be down played like Cyclops.
-
Can't believe no one wrote that earlier.
-
The moment you envision Chris Evans goofy ass wearing it. Think about it, dumb ass Evans wearing that dick-head mask and about 50 pounds lighter than the guy in the artwork.
-
Cap with belt and suspenders?!?!?! Remember the movie “Once Upon a Time in The West:
“How can you trust a man who wears both a belt and suspenders? The man can’t even trust his own pants.” (Frank/heny Fonda)
Honnestly, it’s ridicoulus, and stupid! -
This costume is based on the "Ultimate" version of Cap, not the classic version.Thats why there are no wings, and no stupid floppy red boots or gloves. For more info on Ultimate Cap, see this link:
http://marvel.wikia.com/Steven_Rogers_(Earth-1610) -
I dont think thats the WW2 outfit, but the modern one. I dont like the suspenders that go around the shoulders, but other than that, think it looks great.
-
Yes. The more believable the character the better. But cutting corners on suits began with x-men and spider-man. Yes all black leather suits are more realistic and I guess not having a web shooter is too….I guess. Each x-man had their own unique style/suit. I web shooter shows how smart parker is and also can add dramatic events when it runs the hell out. But I never saw how blowing white web out of his wrist was any better. Spider man has a WEB SHOOTER!
Cap is a symbol of the United States of America. He is supposed to stand out because he is a super freaking solider! His most important job during the war was to inspired soldiers. So his suit looks like a flag because of that. If they wanted him to win the war alone he would have had a stealth suit and been a secret. FOR GOD SAKES HE HAS A HUGE SHIELD THAT LOOKS LIKE A TARGET!!!! SO PUT SOME ****ING WINGS ON HIS HELMET AND MATCHING RED GLOVES AND BOOTS. WHY THE HELL NOT??? SOMEONE EXPLAIN THIS TO ME! WOULD U REBUILD A FORD MUSTANG CORBA BUT LEAVE OFF THE ****ING COBRA EMBLEM??? WOULD U NOT GO BALLS DEEP IN PAMELA ANDERSON DURING THE BAY WATCH ERA??!!?!?!The movie already swings in the balance because of Chris Evans who I think is a long shot to even try and act like the leader that is captain America. SO Y MAKE CAP LOOK LIKE A BLUE BALLED DILIDO???!!!!
LETS HEAR IT FOR FINISHING WAT U START….. LETS HEAR IT FOR WINGS
-
I coulda sworn ALL of the images of Captain America have wings on his mask or helmet or whatever the hell you wanna call it. I hope the director caught that and pointed it out to the artist, who obviously has never really seen Captain America up close. Captain America's mask has wings, Where the hell are the WINGS, stupid?!
-

(first link didnt work above... sorry) -
Costume changes for some super heroes can be good, but others can't.Christian Bales's costume in "The Dark Knight" was the right change. Brandon Routh's costume in "Superman Returns" didn't work. Wrong colors, among other changes, was a big factor. Chris Evans' costume in "Captain America" should be the same as it is in the comics, colors and all. Lose the wings if they must, but lose the helmet too.
