Check out this trailer for French nod to '80s sci-fi and fantasy called DAY OF THE COMET (Le Jour de la Comete)!

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. I get sent a ton of low budget stuff... trailers, sizzle reels, pitch videos... some of them are good, most of them not so much, but only a few I've felt compelled to pass along to you guys. This French film looks to homage all the right things for me personally. It's going for an '80s Amblin feel and being French has some really fucked up visuals... I mean, there's a giant teddy bear in the first part. I have a feeling this DAY OF THE COMET (no relation to the '80s cheesetacular Night of the Comet) is ahead of the curve, what with JJ Abrams doing his version of an Amblin movie with SUPER 8 and all the rip-offs that's sure to inspire from other studios. I hope the final version is cool, but this trailer really perked me up. God willing we'll see this start hitting the festival circuit soon enough and we'll see how it plays. Enjoy:

    Hmmmm, I dunno....

    by D.Vader

It seemed less like a movie from the 80s, or even an homage to the 80s, and more like a movie saying "I'm cool because I'm about the 80s." Hahaha, look at this giant cell phone I have! Hahaha, I'm wearing a red vest like Marty McFly!
In other words, Donnie Darko looked more like an 80s film than this one does, in my opinion.
Still, I'm curious.

@Obnoxious_Username - What it appears to be is...

    by V'Shael

three or four nerdy characters, at least one of whom has a craazy imaginary friend and one who thinks of himself as a vulcan/emotionless robot because he's a virgin at 31, are going through life. A comet lands, splits, and pieces embed themselves in their brains. Making their internal world come to life. No doubt with "hilarious" consequences.

Virgin becomes stud, imaginary violent bear becomes real, etc...
Amblin in the 80's

    by Mundungus

Continental Divide, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, Gremlins, The Goonies, Back to the Future, Young Sherlock Holmes, The Color Purple, The Money Pit, An American Tail, Harry and the Hendersons, Innerspace, batteries not included, Empire of the Sun, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, The Land Before Time, Dad, Back to the Future Part II, and Always.
This seemed more like Zapped! or Weird Science, more B-movie grade than anything Amblin did.

This would never be made in the U.S.

    by Cobb05

Studios would never let this movie be made in the U.S, unless this became a hit and then it's remake time! This looks like a cool movie. A real throwback to some 80's movies or Amazing Stories. I think this movie looks more like an early Peter Jackson movie. But I wish more American directors could push the envelope and show more creativity.

..who expected the knight to raise his visor and turn out to be Craig Charles? That shot was so close to the Red Dwarf one that I was really expecting Sir Lister of Smeg. Though that, of course, would be silly... Looks fun, though.

I am so getting this when it comes out on DVD/BLU-RAY. I only have a handful of French films (Amelie, Gregory Moulain Contre L'Humanite, Wasabi, and La Grande Seduction) and they're great. This one looks fun.

French "studios" either. That's a fake trailer, never heard about this film (which has been probably made by a french cinema student) You know, french producers would never produce this kind of movie. We're part of the most shitty film industry of the world. Can I say that even if i'm a frog ?

I never found any on SVHS

    by gotilk

I never recall seeing any, for some reason. But the results of taping off HBO were not too shabby. That and mixtapes. The audio on SVHS was as close to CD as I'd ever heard. I would make 2 hour music mixes from CDs to SVHS. I used to master my home music recordings from 4-track to SVHS. Those were the days. Kind of.

    RaidenReloaded, you know what ?

    by Forgehachard

I'm Day of the Comet's producer, and it's a real movie. We're at the begining of the post-production, and the movie will be released at the end of 2011. That's why you don't see a lot of effects at the moment. I wouldn't say that french film industry is whole shitty. Plenty of our directors try to do their, but we've a very low budget compared to the US. They're a few french studios (Europa Corp, Gaumont, MK2) and most of the films we make are independant. Day of the Comet has been entirely shot during 9 weeks of pain n'lo-budget, and I can't let you say a bunch of bullshit without knowing anything about this project, even if I'm a "frog" !:) Stay tuned, more images, and exclusive scenes are coming...

Oh, so, I'm happy to say that I was wrong ! But why the fuck I have to come there (AICN) to see an interesting french stuff ?

  • May 26, 2010, 1:38 p.m. CST

Because everybody's looking at caââânnes festival !:)

    by Forgehachard

The trailer has just been released at the begining of the month, initialy made as a showreel for Cannes filmmaket. Besides, we've decided to release on the net to get our first feedback. Many french & US websites or magasines have written a few lines about it (including quietearth, cinemateaser, cinemafantastique.net, maxmovies, etc...) and there's a documentary about the french "film de genre" which talks about us (screened on Orange TV by June > http://vimeo.com/11868995 (I'm the fourth one, Cédric Hachard)). But we can't over-communicate about this movie for a 2011 release. There's more than 8 months of post-production ahead... But I hope you will hear of Day of the Comet by the end of the year !

  • May 26, 2010, 7:34 p.m. CST

    Not Quite Sure...

    by MakNeil

I am not quite sure what to make of the trailer. I mean, it seems to be somewhat pretentious (which the French have to spare) and yet very…Hollywoody. Then again, it seems relatively gory and interesting in a genuinely interesting kind of way (as opposed to shorthand for: interesting in a sucky kind of way).

night of the comet was pure awesome

    by MurderMostFowl

My wife made me sit through that movie. It's one of her favorite 80's b movies.
Seeing it with a fresh eye, I realized that a huge part of the reason it was so bad is that they probably didn't have to money to go back and do reshoots. So they had to live with what they got.

I gave up after watching about two minutes of this thing

    by James_Camera_On

I have no idea what it is about and no reason why I should care it exists. It's reassuring, I suppose, that europeans can make movies as stupid as we do, but that's it. Complete waste of time. I'm ready for Transformers III now.
