Love the show but the stakes seem weak to me just because JJ's other show is closing out with a bang.

this may be the best four day TV span ever. I have very high hopes for this episode, needless to say. I just hope in Season 3, Fringe stays on target with the big plot and doesn't waste too much time with breaks and pointless stand alone episodes.

That whole setup stank too much of Heroes. I had nightmares that next season would be like Ratner's X-Men. Of course I'm sure more CortexaPhanatics will crop up from time to time, but we don't need Walter as some sort of pophead Professor X and Pacey going around wearing a visor.

As for a Best Actor - Drama Emmy

    by aka_gern_blanston

I'd love for John Noble to get it. Or Terry O'Quinn. O'Quinn is the more likely of the two, not necessarily because of performance, but because it's his last chance to get one for Lost and voters tend to like that. However, the conversation is moot as that snoozefest called Mad Men seems to buy the winners every year. How in the hell that and the shit sandwich that is 30 Rock keep winning every year is beyond me. Best comedy should be Modern Family, Best drama Lost, Fringe, or Dexter (season 4 was outstanding!). And if John Lithgow doesn't get a Supporting Emmy for playing the Christian family man/Trinity Killer on Dexter then you know that shit is rigged!

Agreed with the guy above who said Nimroy's appearances have been embarrassing. That's probably why Noble and Nimroy have never met in this season - stand the two together and you'd just see one very good theatre actor and one guy who just gurns like an idiot.I wish they'd gone for another actor in Nimroy's role, rather than stunt-casting it.

and I'll quote the late, great Bill Hicks

    by aka_gern_blanston

"If you're in marketing...KILL YOURSELF!" I tried, really tried to like Mad Men, but aside from the luscious Christina Hendricks, that show is absolutely boring with a capital YAWN. It's written smartly to make people feel like they're more intelligent for watching it but it's basically a repackaged soap opera with better actors. Fucking boring. The fact that they and 30 Rock seem to win emmys before they're announced only goes to show that the emmys are bought and paid for. I just don't get the show. You can say Mad Men is better than at least 50% of what's on TV now and I'd agree with you. But when 50% of what's on TV seems to be reality shows, that's not saying much. I've given it several chances, even tried again at the start of season 3. But I'm sorry, Mad Men is fucking boring. It's not even the best show on its own channel (that would be Breaking Bad).

    John Noble and Walter

    by monkey_tamer

Only every so often do you get the perfect pairing of an actor and a role. I actually watch the show as much for his performance week-in/week-out than the stories. He does so much with a simple expression or a quiver in his voice that it is just amazing. Add to the fact that they have created a universe (or universes) that is complex/engaging and you have a really good show. I still think it could do a few things better, but it is only in its second season. I have found usually shows hit their "highs" from seasons 3-5. Which makes me even more excited that it has already been renewed.

Olivia2's hair is just wrong, bad wig? Cat's meow.

    by tomonicker

If anyone here has ever read Fredrick Pohl's "The Coming Of The Quantum Cats", you'd see where FRINGE creators perhaps cribbed some ideas and simplified it down for their version of two universes at war! Basically, in "Cats", a parallel universe learns how to peek in on others, like Walter's Window, then to cross over, like Walter's Lake Doorway, and then to pop over by wearing some sort of suit, like Peter Weller's Time Suit, in a way. A war between two universes is started, although there are more than two in play. I doubt that the solution of the novel is spoilers for FRINGE, but eventually, a more advanced THIRD party, perhaps like The Observers, becomes involved and sorts out the mess, because, as you have seen in FRINGE, crossing universes has consequences; it's termed as "ballistic recoil" in the book. Lastly, it wraps up sort of neatly, until one character reveals a logical conclusion that even the Advanced Do Gooders have overlooked or flatly, perhaps fearfully, ignored.
I dig FRINGE. Sure, sometimes it's weak sauce X-files, but it has character touches that are endearing, genuine. I am so glad they did not drag out Peter's reveal(and consequentially, Walternate's as well), though it has often bugged me how it hasn't come up in Peter's dealing that he has a death certificate on file. Did I miss something there?

Still, if ya gotta pick, Terry O'Quinn, John Noble, Bryan Cranston have to be right there up top. Michael Emerson, too, but they didn't give him much to do this year.

    by vikkimarsdale

but I'd have to guess that when Peter died and Walter retrieved AlterPeter, in order to smooth the transition he somehow managed to get Peter buried in a cemetery without reporting the death to the authorities or having a death certificate issued. He may have even disposed the body elsewhere and just had the tombstone erected. Sounds complicated and unpleasant, I know, but how else could he have done it?

Season finales for Bones and Grey's tonight, too.
Tomorrow season finale for Medium, and apparently final episode of now canceled Ghost Whisperer. Wonder if that gets an ending or leaves viewers with a cliff anger?

So I really liked the episode, but . . . if the point was to get Peter to power the alt-universe destroying engine, why go back with them? Why not sabotage the attempt to keep Peter there to complete the plan? Also, how did alt-Olivia know about the grenades? Also, did alt-Olivia have the power to cross universes too? I assume there will be answers to these obvious questions (ie plot holes).

    by yamato

Too many "classic" blunders. Why no "double tap" on evil Olivia back in the apartment? Why leave her able to fuck things up? Why allow the escape if back to the good universe, why not stop them? How does evil Olivia know about the typewriter? She did not even know about the alt universe until the previous ep. She was briefed in that much detail, that this was all planned, for her to replace the good Olivia? Sorry, but the quote Douglas Quaid, "Sorry, too perfect."

But wouldn't that mean that Alt-Olivia has the same "door opening" abilities that our Olivia has? Otherwise, how did they get back? Did Bell show Walternate how to give people like Olivia those abilities and how to train them? Damn it!! When does next season start!

Jesus we get it. You have some unexplained, unhealthy obsession with trying to insult anything to do with J.J. Abrams, be it shows, films, or fans. You've had this obsession for some time now. WE. GET. IT. In fact, I don't think there's a person that's posted in a talkback on this site in over three years that doesn't get it. Do you really have nothing better to do? I know I'm probably instigating a flame war even typing this, but enough is enough bro. If you don't like it, don't read his articles, watch his films, or follow his television. As far as the typewriter...

    by monkey_tamer

I'm assuming that Walternate has been the one guiding the shapeshifters via the typewriter so I'm sure he gave Alt-Olivia the heads up before she went undercover.

As far as why they didn't just kidnap Peter back, I wonder if that machine really WILL destroy "our" world. Remember the only ones that are relaying that info is the Observers (and who knows what their true motives are).

I liked the episode, but wish the final shot had been Olivia curling up in the corner of the padded room (just like when she was a little girl and being experimented on).

Great episode, except for that part, could see it coming a mile away, and considering the Olivia/Peter interaction, really disappointed that Peter was so seemingly easy to fool. Red opening credits!

    by vikkimarsdale

    "Groovy"

Zilla, actually the framed comic book I noticed was "Red Lantern/Red Arrow". Man, I remember buying and reading that first GL/GA issue - even remember where I bought it and the position I was in when I first saw it. At that time I couldn't have imagined an alternate color version would wind up as a prop on a sci-fi TV series. Awesome. I'll watch the tape again and look for the Dark Night alternate. (Did anyone else here think the Doomsday Device diagrams looked like Neal Adams artwork?)

Redhead Olivia with bangs = hotness. Once again, "I tolja she was the grown up Donna from That '70s Show." Not the same actress, but the same look. And Redhead Olivia is totally hotter than Blonde Donna ever was (and Blonde Donna was kinda hot.)

    "This is the '77 Model."

Spo... er, Bell holding up his hand in a farewell salute ala Khan. Awesome final scene for a beloved actor to go out on.

I wonder how much of the time they keep Dunham in the dark in that cell. Or how often they feed her. Or give her water.

Red Olivia, Alt-livia - you can call her Evilivia, but she's definitely a Better Olivia. I wonder how long she things she can get away with it.

And did she get Peter to return to "our" Earth by playing the "WE belong together" card? And he didn't realize how out of character that is? What?

Pa, too bad FF didn;t have time to rewrite the last episodes to wrap matters p. Oh well, as long as we get past FlashForward Day they will have accomplished that. We can just ignore the foreshadowing and new clues and try not to ponder the where they might have gone if they had a season two. Can't believe they canceled F/F and renewed "V" though.

Because with Olivia on our side she can spy on our Fringe team and send over the tech Walternate said we were more advanced in. The other Olivia knew that Bell was a weapons maker, and when she saw the 'nades on our Olivia she probably just figured that he gave them to her. Or since she was standing so close when our Olivia warned Bell, was just BSing her way into the building with Bell. I doubt the other Olivia has any abilities since Walter and Bell never met on that side they had no chance to conduct the experiments on the group of kids. I think this will be her undoing at some point.

The fact that Peter was using a reel to reel to record his voice with. "science fiction.. double feature" from the Rocky Horror Picture Show on Otherlivia's alarm/phone. All FRINGE has to do is have a lesbo chow down and your heads will explode. So, pretty much, it's the Evilverse Red vs. Our Merry Band. Next season will have to maintain a pace towards something subtantial, either characterwise or storywise to keep me interested. So far, the things I have dreaded, dragging out major plot lines and lame retcons, have been thankfully avoided. I hope as an overall series, they have some idea where this is all building to.

is going to last past a 2-part season opener. peter/ walter/ astrid/ broyles/ or someone will probably figure her out fast, and then they'll spend most of the time getting real olivia back (probably by contacting her somehow over there, and getting her to use her powers... i bet she can be powerful enough to jump herself.. if she REALLY tries/believes in herself. you know how they do that shit...) anyway, they need to get back to a few monster-of-the-week episodes in the first half of season 3. im sure fauxlivia will still be part of the bigger mythology, but id be surprised if they kept her in the 'real-verse' for too long. I tried to post last night after the ep, but something was wonky with my computer. Saw this briefly mentioned earlier, but it seems like last night's episode was a major fuck-up.
Olivia can open the door. Only Olivia can open the door. Bell can pass through it, but not open the door. Olivia can open the door only because Bell and Walter screwed with her. Bell and Walter did not screw with Olivia-nate, because Bell was dead in Olivia-nate's formative years. When a writer creates a world, he must abide by his own rules and I swear if they try to say Olivia-nate snuck over here and snagged the real Olivia, I'm done. I loved the ep up until that part. Why are people giving this a pass? Am I missing something?

    Actually, Thanos0145

    by maelstrom_zero

I don't think that was explicitly stated. As far as I can remember, the only reason Bell made that sacrifice was because they needed enough power to keep the door open, since Olivia didn't have enough juice to do so by herself. I'm going to agree with originalmemflix that there's some logic leap going on here.
The only explanation that really makes sense within the context the show's given us is that *maybe* the fabric between universes at the opera house was so weak to begin with, that Olivia's door-opening powers weren't necessary. But that still doesn't really jive with what we've been told.
So yeah. Major missing plot point on how the Earth-1 team managed to open the door with Fauxlivia as opposed to Olivia. Still loved the season finale though. I geeked out thoroughly during and after I watched it.

They said they were going to use the machine to open the crack Olivia had made. It sounded like they meant a new crack but later they appeared to be talking about the existing crack (the one they'd created to cross over). I think it must have been the existing crack because otherwise why would they have to go back to the same place?

Thanos0145 thanx for that alt-comics cover link

    by vikkimarsdale

I immediately recognized Red Lantern/Red Arrow when I saw it, didn't get a clear enough look at the others. Man of Steel Returns is a terrific design (even if it did inspire that movie...). The League with Jonah Hex instead of Guy Gardner? Probably just there to plug his movie. But a Death of Batman issue? and Superman dead in Crisis? Wow. Since the "real" Supergirl never returned from dying (just got replaced by 2 or 3 differently named characters) and since Wayne, not being Kryptonian, probably had no way of returning from the dead the way Kent did, that means the alterverse DC universe is without two of it's Big Three, making Wonder Woman their most iconic character.

Kinda cheap finding out the comic parody covers were done as a sneaky way of plugging the fact that the studio that created them are doing a Fringe comic book, but on the other hand... hey, there's a Fringe comic book!

I still say it was out of character and, sorry if I'm in a very small minority on this, but it was the only scene in the episode that I actually BOLed (booed out loud). Sorry, but I was just really hoping that FRINGE wa NOT going to go that Moonlighting/Sam&Diane/Mully&Skulder/Bones&Booth UST (unresolved sexual tension) route. Can't a man and woman work together in TV ville and not automatically fall in love? Does every show have to be a soap opera?

    by vikkimarsdale

Liked how the Red Lantern Red Arrow comic tied in with the Red Opening Credits.
That RL/RA symbolically shows the Power Lantern being destroyed. What if in that Alt-DC-reality it really happened and that universe has no Lantern? That would explain no Guy Gardner in the League. A DVU with no Superman, Batman or Green Lantern?
Does the loss of those three superheroes symbolize the deaths of the three Chlorhexaphane superheroes from the Real-Verse?

Realizing Alt-Bell died young and he and Walternate never did the Chlorhexaphane trials on the kids means that the Alt-verse does not have any potential super-heroes. Not that I would welcome the Fringe-verse turning into Heroes, but if you're looking for the technological differences between the universes, that's a significant one. One world has (potential) super-heroes, while the other world - the one with massive rift damage, which could really use super-heroes, doesn't.

The reason they didn't need the real Oliva

    by deathpool

Sorry if this was pointed out already, but I saw a lot of people mentioning this. Walter and Bell explained it at the lab in Harvard, the crack in universes was already there from their first jump, they just needed a way to prop it open (the energy doohicky thing) and use Olivia to power it. Instead Bell powered it, allowing them to cross back over. Unless Alt-Olivia does have powers of some sort. It's possible that in the alt universe, Chlorhexaphane or something similar to it is given to everyone at a young age to help their mental growth somehow. The only thing backing me on this though is that it was established people from the alt universe can survive crossing over better than those from our universe (that being the reason Peter discovered the truth about himself). Also, I really like this show. Can't wait for next season.

    Vikki - Walter/Walternate

    by paburrows

Well they remind me a lot of Beast/Dark Beast in the X-Men books. In the early 90's there was a battle between Prophesor X and Magneto which also involved Charle's son's Legion. If I remeber correctly (its been a year or two since I read it) the battle had the regular ending, but then they had thing huge what if spin off called Age of Appocolipse were Legion accidentally killed his Father Charles Xavier in an alternate reality which spun into this huge event where Magneto became good and lead the X-Men and one of the major villians Appocolipse was able to take over the planet and regular humans were slaves.

Anyways the Beast in that world became twisted and evil who would like to experiment on humans just for sadistic fun and had no morals. Eventually the good guys took back control. But as a later result Dark Dark and a number of other Alt characters somehow crossed over to our reality. So Dark Beast has been running around doing all sorts of bad things while Beast has been doing the opposite. Both just like the two Walters a result of the chioces that they have made in their different cercumstances.

The reason Walternate gave the Fringe-Alt-Division was all for nothing. That wasn't good writing at all. They clearly (especially Olivialt) saw, that they are human beings with feelings. And they are not monsters! So the speech Walternate gave was senseless! If you ignore that - it was a quite entertaining finale! Kudos to Mr. Nimoy! A fantastic curtain call!

Do any Fringe-o-philes have all the Alt eps on tape?

    by vikkimarsdale

or DVR or the first season DVDs?
I haven't been taping it to save, and I watch too many other shows to memorize everything on all of them. and frankly Fringe, since the ep just before the hiatus, surprised be by becoming a lot better than I thought it was going to be.

That preface out of the way, the topic is Alternate Technologies. And, I suppose, Dynamic ones.

Both worlds are science-fiction. Our familiar Fringe universe has a woman with a fully functional bionic arm. And Chlorhexaphane kids with super-powers.
The Alt-universe has, well superguns and plasma grenades.

In many ways the Alt looks like futuristic sci-fi, and yet we are told that in some ways they lag behind us.

The Other Side's advances we can chalk up to three things:
    1. Scientific research in certain areas was not done, leaving those scientists to work in other areas.
    2. They had cunning super-genius Walter Bishop in full possession of his faculties while out brain-damaged Walter spent seventeen years in an institution.
    3. They eventually got our William Bell.

    And their lags:
    1. Same as above: science working in some areas while neglecting others.
    2. All the years they didn't have a William Bell.
    3. Their Walter bishop turned bitter and vindictive after losing his son, went into politics and rose to Secretary of Defense while neglecting hi research.
    4. The damage done to their world by the weakening of the barriers.

So what exactly is different? They have better medical care and faster healing. More powerful handguns and grenades. Advanced tracking devices. A ID card system. Better computers and toys. Different comic books. Can we assume an attack on the World Trade Center was prevented or stpped rather than merely never happened? Then, better security.

So in what ways are they 'behind'? Well, that is the question.
We are often sown lighter-than-air craft - Zeppelins. Is it remotely possible that they haven't developed heavier than air travel? No airplanes, no helicopters, no jets, no rockets, no missiles? Thus, no faster than sound intercontinental flights, and no space program? No Tang and Space Food Sticks?

Peter's use of a reel-to-reel tape recorded suggests they may have avoided dead end technologies like 8-track and cassette tape and videotape. It probably can't mean they don;t have digital technology - their computers seem too advanced.

Once everyone gets over the head-rushes of this weekends Lost finale, we need someone to check out all of the Alt-Fringe episodes to try to figure out what common technologies we haven't been shown.

    What are they missing?

Well I think it's already been established from an episode this year that they had digital tech at least 25 years before we did. Hence the cell phone Walter copied in 1985. That would be a fundimental difference right there because of all the inovation you'd have much earlier. I'd say alot more advanced. If it hadn't been for things like the Hindinberg we might have kept building blimps for awhile. Just because they didn't show other kinds of aircraft doesn't imply they don't have them. Walter also said their medicine is much more advanced on more than one occasion. I'd say alot more advanced as just 25 years of advancement in just some areas would be alot.

    The significance of the comics?

    by vikkimarsdale

I may be trying to read too much into the framed comics... or just trying not to miss clues.

Whose comics? If no Peter on that side, were they his mother's comics, or Walternates?

The RL/RA cover is symbolic, but it shows a high-tech weapon, the Lantern Battery power source, being destroyed by a primitive weapon - an arrow. Symbolic of a culture trying to defeat an alternative world they think is thirty years advanced in some areas?
Death of Batman - a good guy loses.
Seems to bookend the Death of Superman - the ultimate hero falls, but we also have, Man of Steel returns - the hero reborn. Crisis, though, also represents the destruction of all alternate realities and the creation of a single real reality.
And that version of Justice League was formed after the group disbanded. It was reformed by a businessman, Max Lord, who eventually turned out to be a bad guy - a villain manipulating and using the Heroes both to control them and to generate "profit as a by-product".

If those were supposed to be Peters parents framing his childhood comics as a memory of him, they were odd choices and don;t all seem to fit the right time frame for his age. His mother being a comics fan would be an interesting character detail.

But if they are Walternate's comics, he must have picked those images deliberately. A team formed by a corrupt leader; a shot at William Bell, or how he sees himself? Destruction of technology by a more primitive weapon: his attack on "our" reality? Or how he views the destruction wrought on his dimension by the incursions from ours? The death of a hero? The death and return of a hero? And the destruction of Earth-2, Earth-X, Earth-S etc.

Are these Walternates comics, and if so what do they represent to him?

The destruction of the Battery explains the absence of a Lantern in the Justice League, but is the replacement of Gardner with Jonah Hex anything more than a movie plug? Because after heroes and Lost, I think Fringe already has enough fantastic elements without adding Time Travel into the mix.

    Fauxlivia not a real redhead?

    by vikkimarsdale

Realivia found that exact shade of hair dye in her bathroom.
She also didn't get the haircut right. Fauxlivia had her bangs combed down flat and trimmed straight across (thing Moe Howard, Vampirella, '60s Cher, Bettie Page, etc.) Realivia trimmed her bangs about an inch longer - eyelash length, then swept them to the side.

If Realivia meant that "we belong together" romance stuff and wasn't just saying it to get Peter to come back to RealFringeWorld, if Peter tried to act on it and get closer, will Fauxlivia play along with it? That's what a good espionage double-agent would do. And that could give us a Peter/Olivia sex scene or two that wouldn't actually change the real Olivia/Peter status quo.

I can't believe Fauxlivia is going to get away with posing as the real Olivia for long.
She works for a fairly security conscious government agency, but they tend to get tricked by double agents all the time.
Astrid doesn't know her that well. Walter always thinks things are a little off and assumes it's his fault. But the people who know her? Peter? Her sister? Her niece?

"Mommy, what's wrong with Aunt Livi? She's weird."

    Peter's Choice.

    by vikkimarsdale

Hmm... in one world they mainly recruited him for the Fringe Division to get access to his madcap genius father. They constantly put him in insane monster-of-the-week situations he's no way qualified to deal with. His mother committed suicide and he learns the man he thought was his father actually kidnapped him.

On The Other Side he learns his mother - his real biological mother - is alive. That his family is rich and powerful. That his father is Secretary of Defense, head of the Fringe Division, and not brain damaged or insane. That in many ways technology, including medical developments, seem miraculously advanced.

On the down side, incursions from Side One have caused horrible devastation on Side Two. And, oh yeah, his at her has created a weapon capable of destroying Side One, but it's keyed to his personal DNA so he's the only person who can destroy the world he grew up in. A weapon that can never be used as long as he's in Side One.

Okay, that's a pretty big deal-breaker and it was the right thing to do for Peter to come 'home' - but he sure blew off his real biological mother without even a bye-bye. Lets' hope she doesn't suicide out over losing the same son twice.

What I Always Thought About This Situation

    by real deal

Was how great would it be if they had a scene where Fauxlivia tells the real one that she's going to " take her place and Peter also " then they cut to a scene outside the room where you see fauxlivia being thrown through the door. I just thought it would make a great scene to get the point across the Olivia really does love Peter ( and you'd better not fuck with that ) and that they do belong together. That's been obvious for some time. In a way Fauxlivia was right when she said " Is that what this is all about ". From one point of view it was.

so they do have some heavier than air transportation.

And the fact that the washing machine thingamajig with the concentric hoops would "hold open the crack Olivia made when they arrived" and then Bell would supply the energy needed to "serve as a doorstop" and hold the crack open long enough for them to pass through was mentioned at least twice.

The episode stands up well to a repeated viewing. I especially liked the scene where Fauxlivia takes the key from over the door - right where Realivia told her it was, right where she keeps hers. When Faux enters Real's apartment the camera does a slow sweeping pan - interesting when we know that she's seeing her doppelganger's apartment for the first time.
