Make it a great season then!

    by shabbyblue

Since they know in advance that it's their final season, they better tie up all loose ends and turn him into Superman.

    Early cancellation sounds dramatic.

    by cavaliergirl

10 had to be the last season. That a show about Superman's early years in Smallville, it was getting pretty ridiculous. The ratings took a huge hit this season. Plus, Allison Mack announced tonight that she wasn't returning as a regular and only doing a handful of eps to wrap up her character. So now, every original character besides Clark is gone. I mean, it's just TIME.

Chosen to end doesnt = cancellation

    by space_butler

But Herc seems to be borderline retarded anyway so who am I to call him on his semantics.

Anyway, using Herc's own words, who is excited for the Lost cancellation this weekend?

Never would have expected that when I started watching it during the first season. Nice job, just wish they hadn't lost me along the way. I too hope the final season is a great one.

It's not a "cancellation" Herc, ya drama queen!

    by mike_d

They all agreed that season 10 was gonna be it's last because the story is running it's course about Clark becomming Superman. Season 9 was gonna be it's last until they green-lit an entire next season. If it were cancelled, there wouldn't be a next season, they would save it's money.

    Thank Zod!

    by mapman

Smallville really needs to end on its own terms. I'd rather the producers call next season the last rather than get canceled and be forced to tie everything up.
Having said that, I've felt pretty 'meh' about this season. The convoluted Zod/Kandorian storyline hasn't really interested me and I haven't mustered the interest to watch the last half dozen episodes. Maybe the final season will give it some extra zing. And maybe Clark will finally learn how to fly!

    Lex as the old lady

    by kdoc13

At least that what I think, he is dressed as the old lady with the man hands and takes Tess away at the end. That said, Lex Luthor is the most overrated villain of all time. Unless he is making giant freaking robots like in the cartoon version, season 10 needs a better villain than Lex.

    "Cancellation"?

    by mr. murdoch

It's already been said, but love how Herc finds a way to use the words "early cancellation" despite this really, in my estimation, having absolutely nothing to do with the actual scenario of choices in how they're ending the show... i.e., it's been RENEWED for a 10th SEASON, it hasn't been "CANCELLED" a la your latest Whedon overly-plotty dialogue-hitched debacle... Semantics? Possibly, but I'd lean toward Welling and the Producers (probably mostly Welling) saying, "It's time." Warner Bros. could make a mint off of this show for *another* decade, if they (and Welling) really wanted to. Just like Mack's choice -- She's had enough. Simple as that.

Just think, reporting on all these shows that have small audiences must be a pain in the ass.

    by mr. murdoch

It was WELLING who revealed this news early. Technically, the CW hasn't "ANNOUCNED" anything yet, as of this writing. Do AICN reporters check facts anymore? Guess not...

    Season 10

    by my pretty pony

It's ridiculous to suggest that the show received an 'early cancellation' because it's doing so poorly on Friday nights. SV has greatly improved Friday night ratings for The CW, that's why it was given an early renewal. Everyone already expected that Season 10 would be its last. Ten seasons is quite an accomplishment. As for Lex returning next season, I personally don't feel it's necessary. His story on SV already ran its course. We know that Lex will be Superman's ultimate enemy in the future, but there's really no point in him returning now. Dark seid is supposed to be the big villain next season and I'm guessing that the old woman at the hospital was Granny Goodness.

    The show hit a decline...

    by david_denmans_beard

when it aired the episode that faced Clark with a choice - save Lana or Pa Kent via wacky Kryptonian timejump hokum. Thank god the set of talking hooters won out, otherwise fanboy outcry of them changing up the source material too much would've leveled coastal cities everywhere.

    by david_denmans_beard

and I'll say it again: the knitter was carrying Fate's helmet. The lingering shot of the bag was the dead giveaway here. The Granny Goodness angle still seems like unplausible bullshit to me.

    by monkeymanreturns

That's more than BSG, more than Dollhouse, more than Buffy, more than Angel...more than the Wire...look, some of you hate the show - we get it. But the fact that it gets to 10 seasons is a triumph and shows that it has fans. It is a good show with highs and lows and the lowest it has ever been was always 5 times better than the shit that was the BSG finale.

Uh, the ratings didnt take a huge hit at all this season, the Justice Society special got some of the highest ratings the show has had for years, and "Salvation" the season finale also got higher ratings than Herc's little graph suggests.

This has nothing to do with ratings, it has to do with the fact that very few shows reach 10 seasons, and Smallville hasnt been cancelled, they have chosen to go out on a high.

sure smallville will be gone, but Metropolis will start up

    by bathman

It's obvious CW is wanting to end smalville then start up a full superman show (called metropolis) which takes place with the same cast, but a good 5-10 years after the last smallville epiosode. Clark will go of for his training at the end of smallville then return in the first episode of metropolis

Either way its done. Its time for a full season of Superman instead of dicking around with Clark/Blur especially if he is going to fight Darkseid. I hope they at least throw Diana and Bruce, go balls out.

    by bizarrojerry

Cancelling a show just after you've renewed it, and still allowing it an entire season is different then outright ending it. Maybe they see that it can't last much longer, but figure if they can give us one last season and hype the hell out if it being allowed a real finale, they'll get some last minute ratings.
