A FAMILY FRIENDLY “MACHETE?” WHAT DO YOU MEAN NO RACE WAR? & A SECRET FRAZETTA PROJECT?? EXCLUSIVE ROBERT RODRIGUEZ INTERVIEW!!
Hey folks, Harry here... and today... today is a very good day. Why? Well, first off we will learn a bit more about MACHETE - straight from Robert Rodriguez, who I decided to ask a few questions on the record - to kind of settle up what's the TRUTH about MACHETE - and what is the insane paranoid drivel of madmen with Talk Shows & Drudge Reports...
However, the REAL NEWS has nothing to do with MACHETE - but something... something TREMENDOUS that Robert just secured the rights to. Something that he's been working on getting the rights to for about the last Six Months - but a project that Robert has had decades of interest in. I'll let you discover what it is below... And I'll comment afterwards...
I KNOW YOU’RE HERE TO TALK ABOUT A SECRET PROJECT,
BUT FIRST, THAT CINCO DE MAYO “ILLEGAL” MACHETE TRAILER SHOWED UP EVERYWHERE, RIGHT?
No joke! I guess I’ve gotten too adept at these fake trailers, some people thought it was real. We both knew Fox would have to remove anything we put up that very same day, yet I saw that even IMDB had it on their front page for several days as the “OFFICIAL MACHETE TRAILER”, as I’m sure other sites did too. I probably should have added a note at the end of it saying “IGNORE MR. TRAILER VOICE, this is NOT A REAL TRAILER to MACHETE.”
SOME PEOPLE WROTE IN THINKING THAT IT WAS FOR A MOVIE ABOUT A RACE WAR.
It isn’t. I would not put out a movie like that. Not only would that be irresponsible, it’d be dull and un-entertaining.
I simply wanted to make a special trailer that was as absurd as what was happening in Arizona. So I took some coincidentally timely lines of dialogue from the old original fake trailer from 3 years ago and from the new movie, reconfigured action beats, and cut it all out of context to make it look like the entire film was about Machete leading a revolt against anti-immigration politicians and border vigilantes. What can I say, it was Cinco de Mayo and I had too much tequila.
Anyway, that’s not what the movie is. In fact the main villain and Machete’s nemesis is a Mexican drug lord from a powerful cartel (played by Steven Seagal) that kills Machete’s family and runs him out of Mexico for being an honest cop, which is why Machete’s forced to work as a day laborer in the US.
Seagal’s character follows him to the US to kill him off when Machete starts messing up the assassination attempt that Seagal’s character funded. Seagal was so awesome we kept expanding his role on the set. The Big Final battle is Machete vs. Seagal and it’s amazing. A side storyline about politicians and extremist vigilante characters that you see in the trailer are not taking a stand for reasons you would think, and the movie clearly shows corruption on both sides of the border. Over the years I’ve spent a lot of time on the border, being 4th generation Mexican-American gives you a unique view of both sides.
It’s a very satirical film, much more so than the fake trailers have even shown. It’s just a damn fun movie. I guess about the only thing I can even compare it to as far as tone, big cast, entertainment value and taking license with reality is perhaps Inglourious Basterds.
SO THE FILM’S NOT A RACIST FILM CALLING FOR REVOLUTION & VIOLENCE IN THE STREETS?
Not by a long shot! And anyone who says different isn’t fully aware of how a movie is made and the many steps it goes through. They may have read a script that wasn’t finished and jumped to conclusions about its content and tone. We kept adding characters so often during production as the movie got bigger and the cast grew that actors would get their lines and scenes the night before (or morning of) each day of shooting. The best lines and scenes and character moments are always those that are added on the day of shooting or added in post. Any filmmaker will tell you, there are three movies that you make: the one you write, the one you shoot and the one you edit. And that’s especially the case with Machete, making the story as tight and as entertaining as possible.
The movie is very over the top satirical, and it’s only because of what’s happened in Arizona that some scenes actually feel at all grounded in reality, which is pretty nuts and says more about Arizona than any fictional movie. I will admit that there were a few scenes that became so real in the past month because of what’s going on that they’ll be best left as a fascinating case study for the DVD extras. This will be my best DVD special features to date, that’s for sure.
One thing the fake Arizona trailer does prove is what magic you can do in the edit room. I have ANOTHER fake trailer I cut that makes Machete look like a wholesome family film in 3D! It’s hilarious. I can’t leak that trailer until we at least have our first REAL official Machete trailer up on the Fox website. Three fake trailers in a row would be way too confusing at this point; people would have no idea what the movie is about. But you do need to see the Machete “Family film version” trailer, Harry. It is hysterical.
SO WHAT DO YOU REALLY THINK ABOUT WHAT’S GOING ON IN ARIZONA?
ZZZZZZZZ. Okay, last question about this.
I’m not that worried about it anymore, because it’s pretty clear that people won’t stand for it. I don’t really believe in protests, rallies or marches either. The real power is in voting. People have to register and vote because what we need is serious, comprehensive immigration reform. Our immigration system is so screwed up, I didn’t realize how much misinformation and misconceptions are out there until all this happened in Arizona and I started reading people’s thoughts about it. You can feel people’s frustration and yet it’s difficult for them to have a clear opinion on the matter because there’s such a mess of misinformation. This has to be figured out, the federal government has left it on the back burner for too long. Hopefully this will put pressure on them to do something about it. It won’t get solved before this mid-term election but they can at least start making progress.
I’m putting myself to sleep, that’s not what I’m here for, Harry. We have something terribly exciting to talk about. Well, I know it’s especially exciting to you and me.
WHICH IS?
A project we’ve probably talked about since we first met. As you know, I had the honor and privilege to work with FRANK FRAZETTA on a special From Dusk til Dawn poster and you’ve always asked “when are you going to get the rights to Frank Frazetta’s FIRE and ICE?”

AND DID YOU?
Yep! The awesome Ralph Bakshi and I have been working it out for a while, and it’s now a TROUBLEMAKER STUDIOS PICTURE. What’s cool is, unlike past projects that I’d get involved with that would get stalled for various reasons, I control the rights to this one. So it’s actually in my power to set it up and get it made, which wasn’t the case on other projects. And for you filmmakers out there, that’s really the best way to get things done. If you can manage to get the rights yourself to a property by dealing directly with the artists and creators like I did with Frank Miller on SIN CITY, and now with Ralph Bakshi on FIRE and ICE, it makes a world of difference and you can get started sooner rather than never.
YOU VISITED FRAZETTA A FEW TIMES
Yes, and it was actually very sad that this deal closed right after Frank passed, I was so looking forward to calling him and saying “At long last, we’re finally making the movie, Frank!”
Frank was an awesome guy, I went to visit him at his house some years back and he showed me his museum. He walked me through and pointed out so many of his famous paintings, saying “I painted that in three days, I painted that in one day, that one over there in two days.” His wife Ellie was there to confirm that he wasn’t exaggerating. She was the one that had to ship them out with the paint still wet because Frank was pressing up against a deadline. To see what he was able to paint in record time was astounding. I’ve been inspired by his paintings since I was 10 years old back when I first saw those Bantam Books collections of his work at the local bookstore.
I think that’s why I was continually drawn to Machete over the years, I always thought of Machete as my version of Frazetta’s CONAN. In fact, I have a bronze of Machete on my desk which you’ve seen where Machete’s standing in a classic Frazetta’s CONAN pose. I also have Frazetta reproduction paintings hanging all over my house, I don’t think I’ve gone a day without seeing Frank’s work somewhere in my living space. He’s been so influential to artists and filmmakers, and yet we still haven’t seen a Frazetta world truly come to life in a live action film, so that’s what I’d want to do with the FIRE and ICE project.
DOES THIS MEAN WE'LL GET KNB FRAZETTA INSPIRED SUB-HUMANS AND PTERODACTYL RIDING BARBARIC WARRIORS?
Yes! You bet. It's that kind of Awesome.
SO WHO’S GOING TO BE TEEGRA?
Harry that’s the same question you’ve been asking for 12 years. At least now you know you’ll finally get an answer. Stay tuned.
Well folks - Harry here again. That's all I can share with you right now. This is a project that I'm very close to. A dream project that Robert & I have been talking about for nearly 14 years. We even painted DARK WOLF garage kits back 12 years ago. Yes, we're that kind of awesome! In the meanwhile... Here's the original trailer, dream of what it could be as a big live-action film done with the same kind of love that Robert put into SIN CITY. The mind truly boggles.

Freaking great news!
-
I'm just eager to see how he stands up back on the big screen amidst the violence. Inspired casting on this project..
-
animate the actual paintings
-
If it's Rose McGowan I'm going to punch you.
-
...makes this project even more interesting. Seagal working with a decent director and an ensemble cast is something we haven't seen (executive Decision doesn't count), and which is something to look forward to, especially considering everyone else in the cast.
-
I thought he would just have a small cameo, but having him as the main villain makes this a must-watch.
-
Seriously, just stop. Sin City 2. Let's roll.
-
They have to go with some unknown hottie for that role. I agree with Ch1ps that if it's Rose McGowan, it will be horrible. If Bay can pull a relative unknown hot piece of ass like Megan Fox out of nowhere, Rodriguez can too.

Harry was really boring RR with all that real-world talk.
by ReportAbuse
He obviously just wanted to get back to talking about important stuff like his crappy, rip-off exploitation flicks. A couple of canned lines about the importance of voting (which of course illegals can't do) and making your voice heard (which the people of AZ and elsewhere have consistently done, as many polls have shown). Deep thinker, that one. P.S. I'm boycotting Machete and all his future films.
-
jesus i would never have imagined that i would live to see this day.i love Seagal but i was always laughing with his "untouchable" style in his fights. The guy was always fighting unskilled ordinary goons which were never a real threat, they couldnt even rip his cloths a bit, while he never fought a big boss baddie who was played by some kind of real life MA expert. <p>At least Bruce Lee in most of his movies,he did choreogrophed fights with real life MA champions like Chuck Norris, but that was never a case with Seagal.i wonder why...
-
robert, please get a younger wife ok man?
-
I can't see this working as live action but I look forward to being proven wrong. What cert. will it be? With costumes from the cartoon trailer I'm thinking R?
-
Has to do the soundtrack as well!

The "boarder crossed us" line is still from the actual movie

Typical safe non-answer by a typical Mexican who has made some money. Rodriguez may be great at visuals, but as with his movies, always manages to say nothing.
-
Make it so, R.R. Make it so.
-
As an aspiring filmmaker, he's constantly trying to show me (and the rest of us) the way (and the cheapest way at that.) And I'll see anything he makes.
-
Perhaps even he knows that very few people come here for real, actual scoops anymore and that the talkbacks, especially politically charged ones, are responsible for most of the hits to this site. <p></p><p></p>Even worse is the cheap excuse to drop an image that happens to have Harry's buyable "blurb" on it.

Those words sounded kind of harsh, a typical mexican? I really hope you are a mexican too. And umm RR is not a typical mexican, look at the movies he makes you dumbass.

No, that couldn't be true. Nobody could POSSIBLY believe that's true. *cough* Sarcasm, for those who don't understand the reference.<P>Regarding the new; super fucking bad assery!! I'm there!
-
This is one of those movies that i thrived on as a kid. If the live action can be done as a mix of Conan meets Lord of the Rings style action with the slight bit of T and A, I think it'll be a winner.
-
why the hell not?
-
You have redeemed yourself in my eyes. The "fake" Machete trailer pissed me off as I thought that was what the movie was all about. I am glad to hear your personal response about the Arizona hud. Now I am going to have to see the movie. Peace.
-
"it’s pretty clear that people won’t stand for it." I guess RR hasn't viewed the polls. Most people support the law. <br> Even though I think this guy in this video is a little cuckoo... how can RR explain the script examples? <br> http://www.infowars.com/racist-film-machete-produced-with-taxpayer-funds/ <br> <br> RR is also really stretching it comparing Machete to IB... I mean seriously.
-
and i dont believe at all that the movie is not also about the immigration problem.I think Fox forced RR to change the story of the film and admit in public that the trailer was fake, after the major backlash. <p>as RR said above: there are three movies that you make: the one you write, the one you shoot and the one you edit.

For Machete? Not so much. For Fire & Ice. Hell to the mother fuckin' yeah!!!

UNLESS MACHETE HAS A HIGH AMOUNT OF GORE AND NUDITY......
by TehCreepyThinMan
I'll waiting for this to hit Blu Ray. The trailer looks like cheesy fun but with Jessica Alba, Michelle Rodriguez and Lindsay Lohan in it, you AIN'T gonna get no tits or beaver. If Machete was being Written/Directed by Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor then I'd already have my ticket in my wallet but RR is too much of a pussy to make something as mindblowing as Crank 2 which, IMHO, is a modern day exploitation masterpiece and succeed's in every way that Planet Terror failed.
-
sweet.
-
I was really bored.
-
We all know Rose is going to star in it. She can't be Barbarella or Red Sonja, so he'll finally have her star in this. I'm a fan of Franzetta, but Fire & Ice wasn't that great. I'd rather see them take what Franzetta's work encompassed and create an original movie. I always felt that Fire & Ice was a movie that had it's balls cut off. It felt too short and not epic enough. Ralph Bakshi is an amazing filmmaker. He really never got his due and we can all agree that Cool World sucked, but he should've made more movies after that. Rodriguez and Bakshi working together would make one badass movie. We all know that on Sin City, Frank Miller was really only there as an advisor. He really had no idea what he was going. Ralph is a real filmmaker and working with Robert will give him a chance to go all out. I always felt like Robert is a filmmaker who rushes and does too much and it hurts his films. If you listen to his commentary, he's always talking about how he quickly put this together and he only had a small window to shoot. And he wrote, directed, produced, shot, cut, scored and catered his movies. I think he's talented and a great genre director. But he needs to take something for his ADD and actually make an epic movie. Once Upon A Time in Mexico should've been an epic, Sergio Leone style finale to his Mariachi trilogy, but he rushed it and it suffered. It's a good movie, but it's not the epic it should've been.

Even though it was obviously satirizing the Arizona situation it still made it seem like the movie was about a race war. Alex Jones isn't perfect. But he's right about one thing.

Harry, do you know or did you ask Robert Rodriguez what film he is doing *next*?<p> ...I'd love to see FIRE & ICE but as it stands it's just another 'project in the pile' for Mr Rodriguez isn't it? The guys in-tray must be a real mess.

But why would you promote Alex Jones/Infowars on this talkback? Jones orchestrated the backlash over Machete. Anyway, the animation in that trailer is some of the best I have ever seen. They don't make em like they used to.

I wanna see Danny Trefo cast as a tough-lovin', machete wieldin' inner city high school gym teacher in Arizona, who leads a bunch of immigration law-tainted vatos to victory... in the state lacrosse championship game. Then the eleven of them pile into Trejo's truck, and go out for celebratory tacos.
-
ebony booty babes with such ass.so no its not difficult to find someone with such an ass.the difficult part is to find someone with such an ass who can act also.
-
When I first read the headline I was thinking they were finally going to make a Death Dealer movie. That character has been painted by Frazetta as many times as Conan and has had many novels and comic books printed about him, so I figured he'd be the next logical choice brought to the screen. Not a remake or reimagining of another movie. Albeit one of my favorite animated ones. I'm curious as who will be cast as Darkwolf and I hope they don't cast a skinny white actress to play Teegra. It's got to be about the eyes and the theighs.

Nor am I Hispanic (I'm as white as one can get). But that cinco de mayo trailer was pretty awesome and actually made me want to watch the movie. Guess not, then. <br><br> Race war? Please. Isn't that what (faux) exploitation is all about? The storyline as shown in the trailer was intentionally over-the-top and ridiculous. That's what made it fun! The plot Rodriguez makes mention of in the interview sounds very conventional and boring by contrast.

Fraztta's visual style on film is going to be a tough nut to crack. Going to be following this one, stoked.

I have little doubt that Machete will become his best film.

has the ass for Teegra.
-
If anyone followed Frazetta's family squabbles, I am wondering how RR didn't mention the family having any rights at all. A Frazetta inspired film would have been better served had he been there to guide it. Fire and Ice suffered due to limitations of live action rotoscoping. Frazetta's images are peak moments held in time and all their surroundings focus on the main figure's gesture; the colors the backgrounds, everything. It is opposite of what a film does. RR adapting the stiff failure of F&I (yes, it failed to capture Frazetta because it was more Bakshi than Frank) is not a good idea at all. RR has to find a new visual language and not stick to Bakshi. The backgrounds have to sway and move with the figures. Then he might get close.
-
...is, indeed, hard to portray on film. Let's face it, Bakshi didn't manage to approximate its quality when he tried to create a Frazetta world using sub-par rotoscoped character animation in Fire And Ice. Maybe RR can do better, but I'm dreading a fake, shot-entirely-on-green-screen production.

Thanks for the praise, Strangepork, but it is largely unnecessary, as I am already aware of my brilliance in conveying to you, the sad little man languishing in the cheap seats, the zeitgeist. Verily were it not for my prodigious wit, my incisive political commentary, that you would have nothing to say, nothing to comment on. But with but a flourish of the keyboard, I was able to move you, the lowly cretin, to comment as to my brilliance. I thank you, and I wish you the best in your future LaserPants fandom endeavors. by Mostholy
This is not a recipe for success. Sounds like the movie will be all over the place. Also, RR's answer about Arizona does sound pretty chickenshit. Why back-pedal so much?
-
and big time. Those paintings are screaming to be placed in a movie. On the other hand, Robert. Don't be afraid to mo-cap and green-screen when that's the only way to capture the joy/despair death/rebirth of a Frazetta painting. Frazetta's work is meant both to inspire and frighten; those two emotions usually go together.
-
holy fucking shit, he's psychic

I love Rodriguez and all, but this type of material isn't really suited to his strengths. He's better with wackier stuff that has more humour to it.<br><br>Snyder is a pure visualist.

Not too many people outside of Harry's Austin buddies will be willing to spend $10 on this nonsense.
-
If the minority of people who are opposed to what Arizona is doing (that's right, it's a loud and vocal minority) would bother to educate themselves about the law and the federal laws already in place there wouldn't be a controversy. I've never seen such a willfully ignorant disregard of facts.

But the story and characters in the original film are terrible. So hope they don't follow the narrative too close.

But if I'm walking down the street and asked out of the blue, you got a pissed off citizen on your hands. We don't do that shit in America. And anyone who calls that "misinformation" is full of shit. Asking for papers without suspicion of a non-identity related crime is something for old time Germany and the old Soviet days. It will never fly here and has NOTHING to do with race or immigration. This is just another case of more laws to deal with problems that already have laws that are simply not being enforced. Along with a border that is being guarded about as well as a dog pen in a suburban backyard. It's also interesting to laugh at the assumptions people make about my leanings when I talk about it. I'm VERY for better border protection, but very against new laws to do it. We don't need no stinking new laws, we need to take some of that old-school nuclear war age military money and funnel it into our borders. More for anti-terror reasons than illegal immigration reasons. And if you think Arizona thinks it's actually DOING something right now, you're willfully naive and misguided. This has been and always will be about votes and about being "the guy" who took a stand on illegal immigration in his next ad campaign. It's about careers and just slightly about sating the closeted desires of subtle racists. "Show me your papers".. just say it in a German accent and anyone with 4 years out of a cave of cultural references will recognize it as a throwback to unacceptable fascism. And it's doubly hilarious when you consider that a huge number of people who did or would vote for something like this just got back from a protest carrying Obama with a Hitler mustache signs. Fucking trailer-park-hippies.

Calm down, buddy! If you would simply take the time to read the bill you wouldn't have your panties in such a bunch right now. In fact, nobody would. People who are pissed off about this bill don't realize that they are being used as pawns in the bigger chess game of politics. The bill is 10 pages and DOES NOT condone asking for identification without reason. No, reason does NOT mean being brown, it means being pulled over or committing ANY other ILLEGAL act. Please, I beg you so that you might educate yourself, show me the part in the bill that says ANYTHING close to what you think it's saying, show me where it differs from federal law AT ALL, show me where it says that a father and son eating ice cream can be asked for papers and harassed by police for being brown. Please! I beg you! This whole situation is retarded and would not exist if people would just take roughly ten measly minutes out of their day to actually read the bill. Funny how all liberals claimed to have read the entire health care reform bill, but their utter ignorance of Arizona's immigration bill shows that they can't even stand to read TEN PAGES.

Fire and Ice needs script work...The only thing interesting about that movie in the first place was the character design and Frazetta art direction. Remaking it into live action strips away most of the appeal. That story is fucking boring, I'm sorry. I wanted to like it but it was so by the numbers fantasy and poorly voiced that I fell asleep, and could never fully finish it. I love Frazetta don't get me wrong, but this seems like a doomed project, even if Rodriguez gives it a Sin City-type spin to the look. Fix up that script into something that's entertaining and it could be watchable, but a straight remake will tank. On the bright side, I do think Machete could really be fun, and I wasn't really offended or put off by the fake trailer. It was pretty amusing to me and very fitting for Cinco De Mayo.

Apocalypto had a real Frazetta barbaric/savage vibe to it {the hero in a tree , facing a panther , was taken from one of Franks paintings }and managed to keep it looking *real* and classy. That said Fire and Ice isn't exactly Frazettas finest moment .It has more in common with Bakshis awful LOTR than Franks work .Slow and boring with endless scenes of neathendrels running towards and away ,its hard to sit through. The character design is nice , but thats about it.I get the feeling frazetta only came to terms with the failure of this film a short while back.He was nearly always used to outstanding praise and success and the commercial and critical beating it received hurt him.

Years ago I read an article about some up and coming directors, one was Quentin Tarrintino, and the other was Robert Rodriguez. I tracked down "El Mariaci" on VHS, loved it and was very excited to see his up coming project "Desperado". I ended up seeing that film 12 times in one week. I have enjoyed everything else he has done as far has the "adult" stuff, I have shyed away from the kid friendly stuff. He has the best seqment in "Four Rooms", Once Upon a Time in Mexico, was a misstep, but I have really enjoyed his honest approach to making films. I am not familer with "Fire and Ice", but I am very interested in anything this guy does. If I have one question, I would like to ask why not cast The Rock in a Predators reboot?
-
Sorry Robert but Amnesty was given in 1986 and has made the problem only worse. Our immigration laws are just fine and fair.<p>Mexicans need to work hard in making their country a better place to live.
-
Despite common misconceptions (a few of them thrown around here) it is quite possible to be a white hispanic. There are plenty of white hispanic Mexicans, they just tend to be in positions of power and thus not often found attempting to cross the border illegally. Calderon himself is a perfect example of the white Hispanic Mexican upper-caste. They benefit from the near slavelike conditions of their browner (largely Indian & mestizo) brethren, so of course have a vested interest in maintaining the status quo. The thought of all those millions of poor, pissed-off mestizos coming back down into Mexico and starting another revolution scares the shit out of them. They'd rather the US deal with them. Tangent: In addition to white Hispanic Mexicans there are white non-Hispanic Mexicans also, mostly of Anglo and Germanic stock and found in Mennonite and Mormon towns in Mexico like Colonia Juarez, etc.

Harry You Sound Like You're Being A Bit Of A Dick To Rodriguez.
by pr1c3y
Maybe it just reads like that though and wouldn't sound like that.

I think he can re-edit his movie into anything at any time. Because he is such a whiz in the editing room. He could make Jeff Fahey into the main character with Machete as a minor player, if he wanted to. Perhaps, Fox called him and told him to tone down the movie, and now he is. There's no way to prove it at this time. Anyway, with the "illegal trailer" he dipped his toe into the political waters and made a statement about Arizona. Unfortunately, it gave the impression that Mexicans should riot/kill and those who are anti-illegal immigration are racists. Bottom line...his goofy attempt to make a political statement was wrongheaded, blew up in his face and now he has to play damage control. It think this interview reflects the decision of Rodriguez to quit making overt political statements. It's for the best in the long run. I can't imagine Rodriguez going on all the political talk shows 24/7 defending his film even if it happened to incite violence. Perhaps, he realized that he's just laid back dude, who doesn't feel like dealing with the political arena and that's ok. That's fine for me too. However that trailer was pretty extreme, so we'll see what the final product is.
-
Melissa George. Boom.
-
I'm sure the studio doesn't want to appear to take one side or the other (spineless test-marketers) and risk pissing off half their audience, so they probably leaned on RR to backpedal on the fake trailer. But I bet he's just biting his tongue for the sake of the box office. <p> Personally, any work of fiction that gives teabaggers and scumbag dittoheads another reason to frown and pout and cry is worth supporting financially. Such a huge fan, cant' wait!
-
Is he trying to bring back big titties and huge bush? What next remaking live action Hentai.
-
That's what the title should have been for this TB. Let's face it, Rodriguez knows better than to comment too much about immigration in America.<p> Were he to tell you his honest opinion, he would probably have to tell you how oppressed and unfairly treated he felt Mexicans to be. He'd probably tell you that there is an underlying racist sentiment in white America based on fear of losing power and control. He'd also probably tell you that he thinks we should have an open border policy that allows those who wish to come and contribute to American society to enter and live in America without fear of deportation.<p> That, I would imagine, is the unspoken sentiment of Robert Rodriguez. He can't speak such sentiments for fear of a backlash. Although, honestly from this crowd he'd receive no such backlash. In fact, he'd probably get a rousing round of "Hooray for Robert! Way to tell the truth!, etc."<p> The immigration situation in this country is far larger than people will admit. The answer isn't to open the borders to all comers. It's to close the borders, to make America available to a select few who really want to be Americans... not those who just want to live in America and reap the benefits of being here.<p> There is a huge difference between those who want to be Americans, and those who just want to be in America. We need immigrants who are proud of America, proud of our accomplishments and of our history.<p> Too few people here right now, whether they be natural-born citizens or people who are living here either legally or illegally, are truly proud and eager to be Americans. Hell, even the First Lady isn't proud of being an American.<p> Being an American requires assimilation, and that is a tenet of our society that many immigrants do not wish to adhere to. More and more refuse to speak our language, learn our history or commit to contributing to the American Way.<p> Now the standard of the day seems to be Multi-Culturalism - standing apart rather than together. People proudly display their respective country's flag on their vehicles and outside their homes. What about the good old Stars & Stripes?<p> It's great to be proud of your heritage. I know I am. But for America to continue on, there has got to be a cultural identity that is shared by all Americans. Otherwise, we'll all just be hyphenates, and that will be our undoing.<p> So stop, Robert, with your Mexican-American pablum. Stop chastizing Arizonans for trying to protect their own citizens from a downright incursion from south of the border. The absurdity lies not in the Arizonans who passed the law, but in the federal immigration system that has so monumentally failed to protect the citizens of the United States.<p> Don't beat up on a state trying to protect itself. Don't demonize the citizens for trying to handle the issue since the feds refuse to. The people who seem lacking in facts are the people so quick to cry, "Racists!" and call for boycotting the state and people of Arizona. They want to punish Americans for trying to uphold the law. That's the absurdness of the situation.<p> That said, I can't wait to get ahold of Machete when it comes out!
-
Stop putting words in RR's grill, if he wants to say something then he seems man enough to come out and say it.
-
I was thinking the same exact thing. I agree.
-
Where the hell are you?
-
has NEVER been about "separatism". Only delusional, xenophobic minds afraid of understanding other cultures would think that.<br><br>If you are a 'melting pot' than shouldn't you embrace the diversity of cultures contained in a ginormous country like the U.S.A.? Why wouldn't I want to know a bit about Greek history? Or Portuguese history? Or Mexican, Jamaican or Japanese history? Don't aspects of those cultures exist in the U.S.?<br><br>Anyway, big props to Robert Rodriguez for the Bakshi love. Now if he can just get "Coonskin" out on DVD.
-
Hell yeah... start with "Prisoner of the Horned Helmet." <br> <br> Director: I'm really digging the Russian directors right now... "Mongol" and "Viy. The Return." <br> DP: Vladimír Smutný, Dan Laustsen, or Sergey Trofimov. <br> <br> Gath of Baal: Manu Bennett <br> <br> Cobra: Amanda Seyfried? I know in the books they describe her as being ivory. <br> <br> Robin Lakehair: Emmanuelle Chriqui <br> <br> Costumer designer... someone like Renée April or John Bloomfield.
-
Get John Milius... make Death Dealer bloody as hell. The guy still has it... wrote and produced Rome... and is working on some Genghis Khan project atm.
-
I've seen the movie, and I feel that it is one of those rare gems that demand a remake. Then I read that Robert Rodriguez...THE Robert Rodriguez...secured the rights to the film so now he has full power over the adaptation and can do whatever he wants with it. Hell, with a filmmaker of his caliber this adaptation will be quite faithful to the original film, and can surpass it tenfold not only in the effects department but also in terms of script (the original was pretty short, so the live action version should be longer to add more expositional depth to certain characters). As far as casting goes, please cast Megan Fox as Teegra. There are naysayers who may trash her but honestly she definitely looks the part. I'm sure that they won't show her strutting around with that sexy skimpy get-up from the original (thong and all), but at least something along the lines of Princess Leia's slave outfit from Return of the Jedi. Seriously, I love Megan Fox and she's not that bad of an actress. She's certainly no Hilary Swank or Jennifer Connelly, but she's still young and I know that she can pull off better performances in later roles. Hell, I totally prefer over any actress who were principal characters on Baywatch (no where near Fox's league and went on to do lesser things). I know that there may be those cynical enough to trash my choice but lay that aside and please give a reasonable rebuttal to my post. Also, if you're reading Robert Rodriguez then please take this acting choice into serious consideration. Thanks.
-
are actually in the movie? It'll be a letdown without DeNiro, Michelle Rodriguez, Don Johnson, Jessica Alba and yes, Lindsey Lohan. I want a big, crazy cast.
-
Dammit, that looked GOOD! If that's not the movie, shit! How can you have make a family friendly version of a movie that's supposed to be "Rated X" and has the tag line "They fucked with the wrong Mexican"?!?!! Ah shit, those trailers are clearly better than whatever the movie is going to be. We didn't cross the border, the border crossed US!! That was hilarious! If actual Mexican Americans were going to start a war over that, holy shit what idiots are in charge!

I thought it was great! Damon and Carlton are such funny guys and have good non-answers for questions that may be answered in the finale. I don't see how people can really call them assholes if they ever see these two in panel discussions and interviews like this one. <p> The clips they showed were pertinent to the series and featured one of my favorite events on the show- Desmond's phone call to Penny. We learned some interesting info on who may be appearing in the finale (during the opening credits- block the lower portion of your television so you don't see all the guest star names), AND we saw a scene from the finale! <p> I was hoping they weren't going to spoil anything, but the scene they showed sure did potentially answer some questions/bring up some new ones! Just like LOST always does =). <p> In other words, I had a lot of fun.

This was ruled on back in 2005 by the U.S. Supreme Court... the police have the right to pull you over at anytime. <br> <br> (U.S. Supreme Court - Muehler v. Mena; No. 03-1423; March 22, 2005) <br> <br> The Court of Appeals also determined that the officers violated Mena's Fourth Amendment rights by questioning her about her immigration status during the detention. 332 F. 3d, at 1264-1266. This holding, it appears, was premised on the assumption that the officers were required to have independent reasonable suspicion in order to question Mena concerning her immigration status because the questioning constituted a discrete Fourth Amendment event. But the premise is faulty. We have "held repeatedly that mere police questioning does not constitute a seizure." Florida v. Bostick, 501 U. S. 429, 434 (1991); see also INS v. Delgado, 466 U. S. 210, 212 (1984). "[E]ven when officers have no basis for suspecting a particular individual, they may generally ask questions of that individual; ask to examine the individual's identification; and request consent to search his or her luggage." Bostick, supra, at 434-435 (citations omitted). As the Court of Appeals did not hold that the detention was prolonged by the questioning, there was no additional seizure within the meaning of the Fourth Amendment. Hence, the officers did not need reasonable suspicion to ask Mena for her name, date and place of birth, or immigration status. <br> <br>

Megan Fox as Teegra now that she needs a job lol

"I’m not that worried about it anymore, because it’s pretty clear that people won’t stand for it." Except for, you know, the 65-75% of Americans who support it. Get out of the cocoon, Robert, and make some non-leftist friends.

Love Frazetta, not realy a fan of Bakshi. Fire and Ice does not need to be remade. It was just a juvenile 'Tarzan lord of the jungle' with tits. The villain was seriously ripped off from Michael Moorcok's Elric too ;)

...immigration reform was signed into law by Reagan in 1986. The current "comprehensive immigration reform" is nothing more than an amnesty for tens of millions of illegals. 1986 FEDERAL law specifically state "illegal entry" is forbidden and subject to deportation. 8 U.S. Code Section 1325, look it up.<p>I don't know why Robert found Arizona illegal immigration law boring to talk about, I think he's evading the question and gave a bullshit answer. What about that nut Alex Jones who have a highlighted copy of the script which have a stereotypical Minuteman being decapitated towards end, or did he overlook the bitingly satirical context?<p>Check out Mexico's immigration law, it's very strict and then the Mexican president have the gall to lecture Americans on immigration. What a hypocrite. I surmise Mexican president LOVE illegal aliens in America because they send money to relatives in Mexico by wire; a "black" economy if you will, like about 1/3 of the economy. While Mexico refuses to fix its problems, only corruption and more corruption compound for the authorities to maintain control of Mexican government by the full-blooded Spaniards that look down on the impoverished Amerindian-Spanish admixture people and sanction them to migrate north to take over America to liberate according to Atlzan plan (La Raza, MEChA, Brown Berets, etc). Mexico kicked out France that seeks to force Mexico to repay the remaining debt in a war, and that is celebrated on Cinco de Mayo holiday. In sum, Mexico is a parasite nation. I think if U.S. government were taken back by the "extreme right-wing" faction with firm belief in founding principles, U.S. should pull out of the bullshit "War on Terror" in the Middle East/Central Asia and plan to invade Mexico (or sic the CIA) to overthrow the corrupt Mexican government and restore the Mexican Constitution as originally amended. Hell, original Mexican constitution, which is almost a carbon copy of U.S. Constitution, grants the right to keep and bear arms, and yet now gun control over there is strict with horrifying results with drug thugs having a huge advantage in illegal arms possession and trade. Not U.S.'s fault. It's the macho, misogynistic, guns-blazing culture over there that's a problem. <p>Robert's claim that Machete is not meant to evoke race war withstanding (because Mestizos are usually idiots with the bowling ball I.Q. who might take Mechete film so literally they might become criminally inclined), Machete film looks alright...but even if it's in satirical context as Robert claims (of course, it's grindhouse), Robert basically and subconsciously sanctions a race war (he calls for comprehensive immigration reform = amnesty) while earning big money. You know California was wonderful just four decades ago with best schools (K-12 and college) and quality of life in the nation; now it's miserable because of rampant liberalism and insanely convoluted politics & tax code. When California goes under in fiscal and sociopolitical explosion, as a trend-setter, other states - unless they prepare well - might get knocked down in the domino effect. Check out "Civil War II" by Thomas Chittam, published circa 1995. Awesomely prophetic. I will read reviews (preferably by right-wing faction) to decide whether Machete will be worth my time.
-
what are we supposed to do? Just let all illegals in the country? So fucking sick of harry's bullshit.
-
I don't know or even care if she can act but she's got the body of a Frazetta babe. Mickey Rourke as Darkwolf would be cool and RR has already worked with him on Sin City.
-
O.k. I realize that this isn't ever going to happen, but... The original movie was animated using real actor's performances, and characters in the sytle of Frank Frazetta. There is a way to do this like that again, but updated to today's technology; The Avatar performance capture route. The sad, sad truth is that almost no real women look as sexy as Frazetta drew them. They're either too thin to have curves like that, or they don't put on weight that way. Finding one that looks like a Frazetta woman and can act is not going to happen. Darkwolf is going to have the same problem. Men who don't use steroids don't look like that. Jason Mamoa got pretty damn buff for his Conan role, but the images that are coming out are still getting mocked, because no actors look like Schwarzenegger any more. My vote is to find actors that can act, and make CG characters that look like they're from Frazetta drawings. But I don't imagine that this film will have anywhere near the budget the it would take to do that right. If Rodriguez holds off making this until the technology gets a cheaper, and the Conan and John Carter movies do well, then he might just get the budget to do this, but it still seems unlikely. But a man can hope.
-
just in general without even factoring in this interview. and his movies blow after the novelty wears off around 30 mins in.
-
First a decent looking Predator sequl and now this. If only RR had got the rights to Conan too.

It's possible, if these test pics are to be believed: http://preview.tinyurl.com/35oy4u5 !!!

And celebrities wonder why they get asked fluff all the time?

Because of geekdirectors visiting geekbloggers to tell fucking awesome geek news.
-
I would have more respect for Rodriguez if he had stuck to his guns. He knew exactly what he was doing when he made that trailer; apparently he wasn't really prepared for some of the push-back. His "problem" wasn't that people misinterpreted the trailer, it was that they very clearly got the message he WANTED to send, and he (for some reason) wasn't prepared for the negative reactions to it. That, or someone got to him and told him that he was risking running into trouble at the box office. To pretend otherwise, to sit back and laugh and act like he can't believe all those uncool people out there "didn't get it" is totally unconvincing and, frankly, cowardly. He wanted to provoke, he succeeded, he should deal with it honestly.
-
on my target audience, and hope they'll get the joke". Smooth move. Fuck you, and fuck "Machete" as well, asshole.
-
Well put sir.
-
Cry and moan at the top of your lungs about the poor, poor people and then tuck tail and run when they're called out on their BS. Sounds like Harry for that matter, although he's a pretend liberal just so he can look cool next to his many celeb friends who tolerate his ass because they think getting good reviews on here will guarantee good BO.
-
I'd like to challenge the notion that coddling illegals is an automatic leftist cause, though...I'm a lefty, and I support Arizona and am against this bullying boycott. There must be others, given the overwhelming support the polls give their cause...<p> For all intents and purposes, undocumented workers are being imported wholesale into this country to undermine your average worker's wages in order to dampen inflation so the fucking vampire banks who created this recession can continue to play in the derivatives market. And the bleeding-heart, coffeeshop liberal elite are going along with this scam because it warms the cockles of their heart to pay a foreigner to be their maid, gardener, groundskeeper, etc, rather than an out of work American. Guess the broken English makes them feel smug or something.<p> All this outpouring of emotion, and Mexico currently has an unemployment rate of 4.85%, less than half of ours...I shit you not.

So the race war part is just the subplot. That's comforting!
-
RR's backpedaling is probably a bit too late I'm afraid. I spent a couple weeks thinking the movie was about how much of a racist asshole I was for supporting the Arizona law, and being a movie geek I'm probably in the minority reading his explanation that it was just a funny trailer and nothing more. Most people who heard about the controversy will probably assume that's still the tone of the film, and I guess that's that. I'll reserve judgment until I read the reviews, this is probably going to be a fun netflix rental, but I think he's done a lot of damage to his film. Bad timing RR.
-
Tuck tail and run. You mean like your beloved George Bush, Dick Cheney and company did when it came for them to serve their country? Typical right wing lunkhead.
-
Yeah, the sixty to seventy percent of Americans who support the Arizona law won't stand for it. Maroon!<p>I agree with the others here who've said that they'll never watch Rodriguez again. I loved the dude. Watched all of his stuff. Own his Rebel Without A Crew, etc. No more. I want nothing else to do with this idiot. Ever.

I don't know you, dude. And I don't know Sierra Tango Foxtrot Uniform. I seriously thought he had turned "politically relevant" on us. I was so pissed. I'm glad it's going to be kick ass exploitation and not propaganda. People need to read the bill before they open their traps, and realize how big a problem illegals really are. There are legal immigrants who support the bill. That should tell you something about the BS that people are spreading about it. The Feds aren't doing their job so Arizona adopted the Fed laws so they could enforce it themselves. And Fire and Ice! Holy Crap!!!
-
..If he is full of shit and it is propaganda, I'll never give him another dime and boycott his ass!
-
he will use his money and fame to stop illegals from coming to America. Problem solved. No illegals = no new laws to try to find & expel them. Anyone opposed to the tougher immigration laws is just admitting they want to help their own by breaking the law and sucking America's social services dry.
-
Looking at a recent survey, when asked why they support the Arizona law, a majority of those in support favored the measure because “the federal government has failed to solve the problem” (52%), compared to 28% who said because “it will reduce illegal immigration” and 12% who said “it will reduce crime.” What everyone actually wants is comprehensive immigration reform. Again, looking at a recent survey: Now I'd like to read you a description of comprehensive immigration reform: Under this proposal, the federal government would strengthen border security and crack down on employers who knowingly hire illegal immigrants. Illegal immigrants currently living in the United States would be required to register with the federal government, undergo criminal background checks, pay taxes, learn English, and go to the back of the line for U.S. citizenship. Do you support or oppose Congress passing comprehensive immigration reform? Support 78 Oppose 16 Don't Know 5 Support/Oppose Democrats 76/17 Independents 76/19 Republicans 84/12 Everyone wants this. Only the crazy fringe actually insists that we need to deport people who have been living here, and not causing problems.
-
Because that is just code for 'amnesty and open borders'. We want BORDER SECURITY. And thanks to Arizona someday it might happen. I live in Arizona, by the way.
-
I watched "Fire and Ice" for the very first time last night. I thought it was really good! I think it does have potential to be a great live-action movie. I'm really excited now about seeing it. I think it's going to be great! I can't wait! Thank you Robert!
-
He is a skilled and enthusiastic hack, but he is a hack, nevertheless. His movies are mean-spirited, visually and tonally ugly, and without heart. He has never put out a truly great, or even good film, as he doesn't have the necessary skills as a writer/creator. No, Rodriguez is a very talented technition, and that is all. He's a camera man and a self taught special effects man, but as a director/writer, he doesn't have what it takes.

For immigration reform to happen, that would mean no more slave wages for the illegal immigrant workers. It would also mean giving them living wages and benefits, including full medical benefits, and the U.S. government, and U.S. corporations, don't want that--the reason they have failed to move for fair reform of the system--and I underline the word fair. Hell, these bastards are so greedy, they don't even want U.S. workers to have a living wage, benefits, or pensions--no, they want us all to be broke, unable to pay our mortgages, or to buy a home in the first place--yes, they want us on our knees; so knowing that, you have to reason, if they don't want us to have those things, then they certainly don't want that for Mexican day/night laborers and their families, either.<BR><BR>Look, if you want to stop illegal immigration to the U.S., and you are being totally honest and serious, you would make it a felony to hire someone without a legal work visa. Here is the analogous: Shut-down the rides at Disney Land, and who will show-up to ride the rides? Answer: Nobody...and the same is true of jobs, and the hiring practices that lead to those jobs. If there are no jobs, save through legal work visas, nobody will come to the U.S. illegally for said jobs. The American government, corporations, small businesses, and even the press...know this, but they don't care. They want the illegal problem, because the slave labor is good for the economy, and greedy corporations, small businesses, and individuals, benefit from its continuance slave labor, and the black-market economy that it fuels, but they won't admit it. It means trillions of dollars to them. <BR><BR>Secondly, Mexico is creating the world's most billionaires...a title shared with Russia, thanks to their huge oil reserves, respectively. Both the Mexican government and the U.S. should insist that much of those profits coming from Mexico's oil industry be shared with the Mexican people in order to build-up the infrastructure of Mexico, and quality of life for families, via higher taxation of the oil industry there, and its oil mogals. Surely, these corporations and individuals can afford to give up half of their worth for the betterment of their people, and nation--but they refuse, out of sheer greed, and we let them, out of our own greed. Enough!!! We are destroying much of our country, and theirs', so that the top companies in the U.S. and Mexico, and a handful of individuals, per capita, can get extremely rich, with monies they couldn't spend in 10 lifetimes, or more, and the same for their families. It is just vulgar. This is blood money, no different than the Blood Diamonds of Africa because people (the Mexicans) are being taken advantage of in the worst possible of ways, for profit. Mexican families are being separated, women and children are being raped by human traffickers, and families, and individuals are murdered, or die on their trek to...or from, America, just simply because they are trying to feed their families? This is obsurd, vulgar, and unacceptable!!! And we call ourselves Godly? As for His part, after seeing such willfully cruel actions by such a corrupt society as the U.S., et al., God can only call us worthy of Armageddon.

Give the money to the people of Mexico!!!! God Bless them, and may it be so!!!!

Both you and Robert Rodriguez may disagree about my comments concerning his filmmaking, but the issue that is most important to all of us here, is what is going on in Arizona, and around the country concerning the fair/unfair treatment of the Mexican people and how it impacts the U.S., and its people. I would like Robert to consider my words about that issue (see above), and share them with others, should he agree. There is a greater issue going on here, than just simple illegal immigration, there is an unspoken agreement between governments and corporations to exploit the Mexican people, and the people of the U.S., and the only way to tackle the issue properly, is to expose the truth, and in full...as I have outlined in my above text. Thanks Harry!!! <BR><BR>Sincerely, MM
