US Release Scheduled for Ghibli Adaptation of Tales from Earthsea

Cartoon Brew notes that Disney has announced that it will theatrically release Studio Ghibli's Tales from Earthsea (Gedo Senki) in the US on August 13th under its Touchstone Pictures banner. The movie, directed by Goro Miyazaki, the son of revered anime director Hayao Miyazaki (Spirited Away, Ponyo, Princess Mononoke, My Neighbor Totoro) several books from Ursula K. Le Guin's series of novel. The feature premiered in Japan back in 2006, and hit other English speaking territories, such as the UK and Australia since then, but its US release has been delayed due to the Sci-Fi Channel's now expiring hold on the Earthsea rights. Cast for the English dub includes Timothy Dalton, Willem Dafoe, Cheech Marin and Mariska Hargitay. Reviews of the movie weren't especially positive, especially by the standards of the frequently lauded Studio Ghibli, and it is generally remembered a cause of friction between Hayao and Goro Miyazaki. Le Guin was likewise cold to the work. In other Ghibli news, Ghibli Wiki has translated the status update for the next Ghibli feature, Arrietty the Borrower - scheduled for Japanese release July 17, 2010 key animation and the chief animator's check are complete. Animation and background painting will be completed this week. Key animators will finish up drawing animation cels this week by not taking a rest (in the figurative sense). The background painting staff will move on to start the work of the exhibition of Taneda and other Ghibli films. Because animation work will be completed this week, painting work has become difficult. Studio Ghibli uses Toonz Harlequin to paint so most studios cannot assist. Arrietty's third trailer will be released soon.

...very frustrating that Ghibli + LeGuin could be anything...
by FlickaPoo
...but great.
Seems like such a good match.

So disappointed no one has been able to get Earthsea right. I'm not as hard on Goro as many critics though -- I think he just bit off more than he could chew, and the studio lowered their colours by, well, not being faithful to the colours of Le Guin's characters -- literally.

PS Don't mention Sci-Fi's Legend of Earthsea mini-series

Just don't don't go there. Ever. Not even Danny Glover could save that steaming turd.

I really didn't care for the post-feminist tract that she came out with later.
But for those who like a really good, really different fantasy series, I can't recommend them highly enough.
A Wizard of Earthsea is something you could read in a day or two, easily.
You could skip the Tombs of Atuan, without missing much.
The Farthest Shore is a terrific end to Ged's story.

...of the three...self contained and absolutely perfect little story in every way.
-
It's my least favourite of the three, but I don't dislike it. I just don't think it's necessary to appreciate the third book. Aside from a brief reference to Tenar and Ogion towards the end, the events of the second book are incidental to the finale.
-
and before the attacks start, I've read the first two books and loved them. I guess the trick is going into it knowing that it's a completely different piece of work. Saying that I still don't understand how people hated it as much as they did.
-
either, as the characters had light skin (despite people laughingly trying to claim to her that black and brown people are represented with creamy colors in anime).

than most Ghibli movies. I'd go so far as to say that Howl's Moving Castle was significantly more beautiful and created a much more enchanting fantasy world, even with the flaws it had. The character animation was nice, but it felt very much like a copy of Hayao's designs, so I think it suffered for that comparison. I was so sure the Cobb character was a woman though, it's going to be freaking weird hearing Willem Dafoe's voice in the dub.

Here's a relevent story from my days working at IBM. A young engineer was given his first project management position on an important government contract. Unfortunately most everything went wrong and the project came in $5 million over budget. At the end of the project, the young manager went into his boss' office and handed him his resignation. The boss yelled back "what the hell do you think you're doing? I just spent $5 million dollars on your training and I plan to get back on my investment!" I wish I could send this story on to Hayao Miyazaki.

...lots of shots of people walking/riding from one place to another - then this is for you. It's pretty sub-par.
-
was a tedious, mind numbing, visually dull experience.
-
Earthsea is by far the worst Ghibli movie. Nonsensical story, terrible ending, boring... just nothing redeeming about it.
-
Some of my absolute favorite books as a kid. Wizard's school way before Potter. So first, the SciFi channel makes a horrid, straight to TV adaption and now they've made an a Pokimon or Vampire Hunter D cartoon version of it. Won't someone please make a halfway descent attemp at a genuine move with real actors?!?!? The material deserves it.
-
Its unfortunate that Earthsea from the SciFi channel was my introduction to this, it looks no different than any of the other cheap fantasy crap they've made throughout the years. I look forward to reading the trilogy because I know its gonna be a long time before someone makes this series and actually GETS IT RIGHT. Oh, and Ronnie James Dio, RIP.
-
It's not much good. Very... bland. Character designs generic and uninteresting. The whole thing is just plain dull.
-
But it's certainly not that great. If they'd cut it down to a shorter film OVA and improved the animation and spectacle, it could've at least been something worthwhile to appreciate. Still, we got some nice music out of it...
-
My missis is a Ghibli fanatic and even she couldn't sit through this charmless nonsense. It has none of the feel usually associated with the studio and isn't even pretty to look at.
-
I projected this on a big screen for a bunch of friends earlier this year, and everyone liked it, some very much so. While it's not anywhere near Hayao's best, there's some really great artwork and enjoyable sequences, and it's discernibly darker than what usually comes out of the studio, with a main character that does something near-unforgivable at the beginning of the film. The music (most notably that song that Therru sings) is fantastic. I agree with the above poster in saying that I liked it more than Ponyo, and I'd rank Castle of Cagliostro and a few of the non-Miyazaki Ghibli films under it as well.
-
My Taiwanese wife thinks Miyazaki is a pervert because he likes to include "upskirt" shots in most of his movies.
-
Not too bad, but not very good means it's way below average for Ghibli, but still worth seeing. A shame that the US release was blocked for so long, but read the very excellent books -- I think the fourth is my favorite, but one really ought to read 'em in order to get the whole story.
