Wait... UNIVERSAL SOLDIER IV? More Van Damme vs. Lundgren? IN 3-D?!?

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Somewhere Vern popped a boner at this news... and I can't blame him. I wasn't goofy gonzo in love with UNIVERSAL SOLDIER: REGENERATION, but that final fight between Van Damme and Lundgren was epic. Out of Cannes, THR reports that not only are Lundgren and Van Damme back, but they're going to be back in threeeeeee diiiimmmmeeeennnnssssiiiooonnnnsss! I'm not the world's biggest proponent of 3-D, but I love a well done gimmicky genre use of the tech. Tongue in cheek, over the top action... yeah. Although fast movement doesn't translate well to 3-D, so director John Hyams might have his hands full making that work. Filming begins in October! Can't wait to read Vern's review! -Quint quint@aintitcool.com Follow Me On Twitter

...'My Ass' in 3D!!!!!!!!!!!! Jeez, talk about jumping on the bandwagon. So is 2D a dead artform then? I loved UniSol: Regeneration, it was straightforward, good quality, top notch action for a Direct to DVD movie. It was perfectly balanced (even if Dolph's role was a bit too short for my liking), and a movie you can watch repeatedly. But does it warrant a 3D follow-up?? Plus, without giving it away, how are they going to resurrect a certain character...AGAIN???!!!

Can't believe JCVD turned down Expendables

    by MJDeViant

And now he's doing these things. I actually didn't mind the last Universal Soldier, but still, I'd rather he joined Sly's movie. I hear they are working on a sequel to the Expendables already (probably if it makes money) so here's hoping they get him, Norris, Segal, and Joe Don Baker from Mitchell!!!!!! MITCHELL!*pardon me* MITCHELL!

    Hey, why not?

    by Knuckleduster

This will put 3D where it thrives: good B-movies. <p> As for Van Damme, I'm glad he said no to The Expendables, because he was busy making the great JCVD. I now have new respect for the guy. It would be cool if he could be in the sequel, though (kicking Seagal's ass).

Unisol 2&3 were made for TV Unisol movies and are not considered part of the JCVD franchise. Same name and all that good stuff, but the main franchise doesn't consider them as a part of cannon. So essentially it's two franchises, the JCVD Unisols and the TV movies. Still it's all good and I really enjoyed Regeneration as well, it was actually a good brutal action flick, so heres hoping for more goodness. Though the 3D thing is kind of annoying for a DTV flick.

the third one actually was kinda fun

    by Bathman

although am i alone in thinking that it ignored the first 2 and just sorta rebooted the franchise with the same actors? It didn't seem to be a sequel at all, more of a reimagining of the idea from the first one<P>I was fine with that since the second one sucks my balls and the first one was never that great anyways

    by ricarleite2

You are missing the point ENTIRELY. It is not about 3D. I have no issues with this technique. It's just that it's being used as an excuse to push any crap down our throats for an expensive value - and the idiot audiences are following to this trend. It is hard for a studio to do a good film, but very easy to just film shit and push 3D into it so it can increase revenue.

Hollywood should convert all Part 3s in film series into 3D

    by Gungan Slayer

In the grand tradition of Jaws 3-D, Nightmare 3D, Amytiville 3D, Spy Kids 3D, Hollywood should just convert all Part 3s into 3D...think of the possibilities! RUSH HOUR 3-D, HOME ALONE 3-D, THE GODFATHER PART III-D, BACK TO THE FUTURE PART 3-D, FREE WILLY 3D, STAR TREK III-D: THE SEARCH FOR SPOCK, SAW 3-D (why wait for part 7?), Scary Movie 3-D, SCREAM 3-D (and release it before Scream 4 in 3D comes out--great way to reintroduce the series before the new movie!), Poltergeist III-D, DEATH WISH 3D, Rocky IIID, MISSING IN ACTION 3D, literally, the possibilities are endless!

    US 4?

    by professor murder

To me, this is Universal Soldier 3, because US2 had no Van Damme. Was just a dvd tv movie quality wannabe money maker off the name. Still, Regeneration(the last one that came out earlier this year) was actually pretty good. I don't remember the MMA fighters name who played the bad guy, but these fights were really believable in the pain they tried to show through the camera. I had fun with it.

why he turned down THE EXPENDABLES

    by Vern

It was reported at the time that he couldn't do it because he had to concentrate on editing THE EAGLE PATH, a movie he directed and starred in. But it also would've conflicted with UNIVERSAL SOLDIER: REGENERATION. That's why Lundgren has a small (but brilliant) part in that one. I can't wait for EXPENDABLES but I think he made the right decision, because REGENERATION is easily one of his best movies.<p> I can see why people would want to talk shit about this, but only if they don't know what they're talking about. If there's an American action movie of the last couple years that's better than REGENERATION I can't think of what it is off the top of my head. That's due to Hyams being a brilliant director and willing to expend maximum effort even though it's just Universal Soldier. The big news here is that Hyams is making another movie. I can't wait to see it.<p> P.s. but I don't get boners for shit like this, Quint. That is a misrepresentation.

  • May 13, 2010, 4:46 p.m. CST

    Vern, Regeneration is that good?

    by Gungan Slayer

Regeneration one of the best action movies of recent times? Really? Seems a bit of a stretch to me....Admittedly I can't say anything because I haven't seen it. Suppose I'll have to get around to it, for the sake of curiosity at least.

  • May 13, 2010, 5:02 p.m. CST

Better action movie of the past couple of years...

    by AngrySmurf

Rambo. Though as I said above, I enjoyed Universal Soldier Regeneration quite a bit, and agree that Hyams jr could be someone to keep an eye on.

  • May 13, 2010, 5:02 p.m. CST

Regeneration was way better than it had any right to be

    by Stryder

Thanks for turning me on to it, Vern. Even as a low-budget actioner, it really came through. I do kinda wish Dolf had more screen time, but hopefully he'll have more to do in the new one. Maybe we'll finally get to hear what he remembered!

  • May 13, 2010, 5:10 p.m. CST

    Oh, and...

    by AngrySmurf

JVCD explained exactly why he didn't hop on board The Expendables train at a press conference for one of his other films a little while back, you can find the clip easily enough on youtube. He even does a fun Stallone impression during it. But basically it all boiled down to JCVD didn't want to sign on without seeing a script first, whereas Stallone expected him to jump right on board as soon as he called him up. Van Damme says he was open to the idea of doing the film, but when he pushed to see a script Stallone hung up on him and then basically wouldn't talk to him any more. And through the whole thing he was still praising Stallone, and saying he'd still be happy to work with him any time, despite this odd experience with the guy.

    yeah, to be fair

    by Vern

I don't think there have been many good American action movies in the last couple years. But I don't mean it as faint praise. I definitely consider it the best DTV movie made so far, and better than the original UNIVERSAL SOLDIER (although that's an enjoyable movie).

    by Maniaq

I loved Lundgren's last line - absolute classic!<p><br />but, just off the top of my head, I thought Wanted was better - wait, does that count as an American action flick? <p><br />also... refresh my memory - didn't they pretty much crap all over the possibility of Lundgren returning at the end of that film? <p><br />not that it makes a lick of difference - they churned out countless Terminator sequels, despite there being absolutely no fucking chance of a sequel making logical sense whatsoever - if there's money in it, it will happen...

I checked out ReGen. Based on this recommendation...

    by robertplant

...and had a fun fucking time. It's flawed but solid. Some really great stunts and cinematography. Van Damme was sorta minor, as was Dolph, and there were def. plots holes, but I'm pretty cynical and I dug it. So bring on the next one.

  • May 14, 2010, 5:26 a.m. CST

    hey maniac re: crapped possibilities

    by robertplant

The last shot is a shot of like 7 clones of the same guy, so obviously there could be any number of Lundgrens waiting to go. Fuck me for caring this much.
