‘I’m Against You, Russell!!’ The First Decade Of CBS' SURVIVOR Ends Like This!!

Published at:  May 13, 2010 5:26:35 AM CDT

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

Every week seems Russell’s last
But each week he fights anew
Rupert got lots of votes last week
But he’s still standing too

Last week Russell turned on two “allies”: turncoat “hero” Candice and “villain” Danielle, whom Russell believed too loyal to Parvati.

“That’s messed up,” Parv whispered to Russell as Danielle stood to get her torch Probst-snuffed.

Will Parvati make Russell pay, or will Russell’s Hitler-Stalin pact with “heroes” Colby and Rupert keep him from marching down the bamboo staircase?

I've long contended Russell will not be among the finalists this time around.

With two episodes to go, six contestants remain:

HEROES
Rupert Boneham
Colby Donaldson

VILLAINS
Sandra Diaz-Twine
Russell Hantz
Jerri Manthey
Parvati Shallow

A semi-naked Candice explains why she turned on her tribe:

And discovers her fellow “heroes” on the jury are not forgiving of her strategy:

“Survivor” remains Thursday’s top-rated series, and it’s long been renewed for 21st and 22nd seasons.

The first episode of "Survivor" aired May 31, 2000.

8 p.m. Thursday. CBS.
8 p.m. Sunday. CBS.

    Russell at the end?

    by ckhappyanswer

Herc, your contention that Russell doesn't make it to the final is based on his trying to buy the title at last season's reunion show.. From what I have seen this season I believe it is possible that his trying to buy the title was actually a setup/ploy to throw the scent off him for this season.. which you might have fallen for.. If he had acted smug at the reunion you might have picked him as a winner for this season.. Is he that smart?

Why would Russell want to throw viewers off the scent?

    by jinxo

I could see Russell wanting to go into this game with his fellow contestants not knowing what he's about or up to, but what strategic advantage would there be in him making the home viewers think he lost? If there is no game play advantage I don't think he'd try and play a trick like that.

Russell and wanting to buy the title

    by the_scream

Because he's Russell! He wants the title twice! He wants to go down as the only man to win twice! But that, of course, can't happen. So, I reckon there is a very good chance he will be in the final three.

I don't think Russell was trying to trick us

    by vin_diggler

but the final vote had not and still has not been revealed for the current season. Why would Russell not be upset that he did not win last season? Like he said, he wants to be the "ultimate survivor". It's an ego thing for Russell. He did not want to lose his first season after everything he did to make to the end. Plus there is no guarantee he will win this season even if he is in the final two. I would not try to read anything into what Russell said last season about this season.

The Russell We're Watching Doesn't Know He Lost Last Time

    by blameitontheboogiepop

Keep in mind that this season was taped about three weeks after last season wrapped - before the votes that declared last season's winner were read. The Russell we're watching knows he made it to last season's final vote, but doesn't know the outcome. He's probably egotistical enough to believe he got enough votes to win that season. He seems to be making the same mistake he made last season - he's not getting voted off, but he's burning his bridges with everyone who goes over to the jury, apparently believing they'll still vote for him out of respect for his gameplay. Last season's lesson should have been that that doesn't work, but since he hasn't seen those votes read back to him, he's making the same mistake again.

    by banshee7

I really wanted him to win as I feel he was robbed last season. But the All-Stars are just as petty and vindictive as the first time players. So Russell's aggressive play will not be respected and he'll come in third. I don't think he gets a single vote. That means Sandra will win. And I HATE her. I hate her type of player, the ones that ride coat-tails, never win challenges and jump from alliance to alliance. The only thing that makes her bearable is that her husband is in the service.

Sandra is amazing. What impresses me most is that Sandra manages to make it week after week without being in a majority alliance, in control or by flying under the radar. She's bold and brassy and a former winner, but no one votes her out. Her "3 more days" strategy seems like it should fail, but she is pulling it off again so far.

Bastard! Still, I find it hard to believe Sandra wins. If she does, it will mar this awesome season. She's possibly my least favorite player that was part of HvV, aside from Cerie. I really hope she doesn't win this. Coat-tailing and flying under the radar may win over some juries, but an all-star? I sure hope not! I'd love to see Russell win this.

that's been my biggest gripe with this show for awhile. The final vote is always made out of anger. I wish they could come up with a better way of deciding the winner. Rarely does the person who wins ever really desrve it. the should change the motto to "Outwit, outlast, outplay...just make sure you do it nicely"

I kind of love Jerri this season...

    by blackwood

I think I've said it before, but she really seems to have matured in the near-decade since her first appearance. Sure, she's been coasting, but she's also made some important decisions that completely changed the power dynamic of the Villains tribe. I would love to see her in the finale.I also hate Sandra, but I can respect her game. I think Russell and Parvati played bolder, smarter, but Sandra seems to forge ahead on sheer indignation and is really good at wallowing in the dissent and distrust other players have for each other. She's a snake, and irritating, but she's a great player. As for the 'win' spoiler, even if the final three is right the votes are read live so there's no guarantee. Although to be fair in a Parv-Rus-Sandra likelihood, I'd be hard-pressed to see the voting go any other way.

    by big jim

but it makes me think - how would Russell be if he was on the Jury? He freaks out when he gets even a whiff of someone being less than 100% loyal to him. He is very critical of those who are not loyal, and attacks them for it. It would be interesting to see, if Russell does make an alliance with Colby & Rupert, ends of being betrayed by them in the end, and faces as a Jury member a final 3 of past allies: Parvati, Rupert (or Colby), and Jerri (or maybe Sandra)

As for the Jury voting history...

    by blackwood

I agree that it would suck the life out of what has been a great season if they vote on feelings rather than strategy. I love Russell and want him to win. Between him and Parv I don't know who played better. I honestly think Russell would be best going up against Colby or Rupert, because Colby has been a lump and Rupert has been a louder, whinier lump. I think he could make the case that he played a better game than they did.

There have been a lot of lousy juries

    by jtp8000

There have been very few - best player won juries because the juries tend vote against rather than vote for who played the best game. Dani Boatwright may be the worst winner ever (okay maybe 2nd to Natalie White). She did absolutely nothing- I don't think she spoke more than two lines the entire season but everyone was pissed at Stefanie for playing hard.Russell lost to Natalie because more people voted against him than for him.Same with Neleh losing to Vecepia(okay maybe she was the worst),Rob losing to Ambuh, the list goes on.

Surprsingly some of the people who won because they played the best game of the final two are the most
unpopular winners - Brian , Jena and Chris come to mind.

The only person who played the best game, won and no one had a problem with the outcome was Richard.

Big Jim.....Agreed. Russell is a big, furry baby.....BUT

    by sydbarretsmydad

he is also the best player. Apart from a few moves Parv has made this season, Russell has DOMINATED the decisions made at tribal counsel for both his seasons. And Parv wouldnt even BE there if it werent for Russell. There have been more than a few occasions this season where my wife and I have cringed at something Russell did (i.e., telling people he has the immunity idol) but his mistakes have been far overshadowed by his completely bat shit insane brilliant moves the rest of the time. So, yes.....maybe Russell gets angry when people go against his machiavellian plots. But he is hands down the best player. I say, let the audience decide who wins. Were far more impartial than the bitter jurors.

    by arch_stanton

If you're after impartiality, I guess you have a point. But that would simplify the strategy of the game too much. Russell brilliance at avoiding a vote-out is extremely impressive, but since he has ZERO ability to keep friends on the jury, his overall strategy is lacking. ON THE OTHER HAND, if he ends up in the final three with Parv & Sandra, does he get votes based on those two being million dollar winners?

But if he loses to these 2 bird brains you have to question how good he really is. I mean you need to have some support on the jury and right now everyone hates him. I hate that I seen that spoiler but I had a feeling Russell and Parv would be there. Was hoping Sandra wouldn't as I think she is a weak player but I am probably wrong there. She already won once and if she makes the final 3 you have to give her credit. She could take it all again due to jury indifference towards the other 2 big mouths.

would it simplify the strategy? I think it would simply alter it. It was clear that at the end of last season, Russell was BY FAR the most popular player with the viewing audience. Because we watch the show and want the person who has the better strategy to win. I say, all it does is alter the strategy of most players from trying to look like a good guy and everyones friend (in order to get jury votes) to trying to be the most cunning player (which gets our votes). And I think it would be the fairer outcome. Yes, all we get to see is what the producers want us to see......and that may be a weakness. But the jury is "In the Bell Jar" as it were, which I think is a bigger weakness.

    by acappellaman

What we see is what the producers and editors WANT us to see. We see 43 minutes each week of their three-day experience. There's a whole HELL of a lot that we don't see. The game is played 24/7 out there, so there's always something going on. No way would they give control of the vote to us. We don't have a truly objective view of what transpires there, and on the flip-side we get insight on what players are actually doing and saying that's hidden to the other players. The Survivors should always get the final vote.

It's a shame that who we feel SHOULD win won't necessarily win. It's great when it happens - like with JT - but players like Russell get kind of screwed. I guess it's also kind of their fault for not being a bit more careful with how they handle their relationships on the island. It's a social game, so you have to find a way to screw people over yet keep them liking you or respecting you on some level.

...can stop talking now. He's pulled two boneheaded moves in two weeks: wasting an idol and trying to pit Parvati and Danielle against each other. All he cares about is getting to the final two or three; he has no clue that he's supposed to be winning jury votes along the way. Just watching Ponderosa, it's obvious Russell won't be getting many of those if he reaches the end.

Now, I love watching him. He was brilliant casting move, and I'm glad he's stayed in as long as he has on both seasons. But he has all of the grace and intelligence of a pit bull.

...is convincing people you aren't playing the game. Russell is horrible at that part. He gloats, he mocks, he threatens, and he lets his ego get in the way of victory. You don't have to be humble to to win, but you have to make members of the jury think that you didn't mean any of it. It is apparent from the way Russell talks that he would absolutely do anything to win and he doesn't care who knows it. Part of the game involves not letting people know that.

    Russell may go tonight.

    by fiester

Of course, I've been saying that for weeks now.

If the vote breaks down 3 vs 3, what do they do? I can easily see there being 3 for Parv and 3 for Russell tonight. It depends on Jerri, I think, and which was she goes: does Jerri have the stones to vote against Russell? I don't know. She seems terrified of him.

If the remaining heroes were smart--and to this point they have not really shown themselves to be--they would take this opportunity to blindside Russell. But they've been fucking up the whole way along and I don't see it changing for any reason tonight.

I was pointing out people who weren't liked but who won the game anyway. Chris,Brian amd Jena were not well liked but the juries respected their game. (if you remmber Christy said she hated "the evil stepsisters" but voted for Jena anyway because she respected her game as did Rob C even though she cost him the million). To use your examples, Yul and Bob were liked so they don't fall into that cateogry

God that woman is sexy as hell...damn and double damn. I will miss her ass once this season is over...I wish they would add a new thing to the finale Sunday. There would be the million dollar winner...that fans voted 100,000 dolla winner thing...and then best ass....best breats...best camel toe....prizes for that....hey if they gave prizes for it imagine future seasons and the female contestants knowing in advance more tit and mor toe means possible cash...oh yeah. Oh and one last thing Parvati and Amanda....million dollar bodies...oh yeah. And go Russell you evil evil troll....you are the best and the worst at the same time...its all good.

I'm with DadTimesTwo's assesment of Russell

    by fiester

You guys can love him because he's a very compelling character to watch unleashed in the middle of the game, but he is not the best player. His ego and paranoia consistently get the better of him when it comes to making decisions and he does not know how to foster any kind of loyalty or respect from the other players--skills crucial to winning the vote.

It's all part of the game. You can't just say "That part of the game is dumb and screws Russell over" when it's been a part of the game from the very beginning and everyone knew it.

Russell may be the most hated person ever on the show by his fellow castmates. There's no flippin' way he has a sniff of winning.

    The spoiler

    by gooseud

For the record, I've known the final 3 for 8 weeks, its not like I rushed into coax to spoil it for anyone. However, if some douche is going to spill the beans, no point pretending it isnt there, might as well talk about it. As far as whether it is accurate, it is. I (along with many other people) said the same thing, "How can anyone know the boot order? Pshhhhh no way thats real". The guy responded with "I cant wait to see Tyson screw himself tonight. Oh, and those of you looking forward to a season long Rob/Russell showdown, dont get your hopes up". Yeah, and then we all saw what happened there. So unfortunately, its 100% accurate, dont ask me how.

Russell and the boys go after Sandra, who has the HI, and this is the last time she can play it (I think). Sandra immune, Rupert voted out. That would work out better for Russell, in a way -- because he could keep his word with the Heroes while at the same time getting rid of them. Which is, like, a drop in the sea of his treachery, but still.

    Rupert's Immunity Idol

    by mapman

Last week Russell thought Rupert had found the hidden idol and told the others. Sandra didn't tell anyone she found it as far as I can tell. So what happened with that? Did everyone know Rupert didn't have it? I didn't hear anything about it on tonight's show.

jtp8000, Sandra told Rupert she was voting Russell

    by big jim

Rupert promptly goes and tells Russell. Rupert deserved to go. Last week he lays into Russell, basically saying he epitomizes everything that's wrong with the game (or, if not wrong, at least all the unfriendly aspects of it). Rupert tell him he is untrustworthy and a liar, says he's even worse than Johnny Fairplay. This week, Russell practically fellates Russell when Russell suggest they join forces. Twice now Russell burns him with the idea of an all-women alliance.

Even though people figured Rupert probably didn't have the idol, they should have concluded someone did. Russell never asked either Jerri or Parvati if, while on the reward, they got another clue (or maybe we just didn't see that). No clue to where the idol is hidden means someone has found it.

    What Sandra is doing ...

    by haljordansuperstar

is being the best damn player in Survivor history. She can piss Russell off, because she knew she had the HII. It makes her not a coat tail rider or under the radar. The jury hates Russell and Sandra is the only one who stands up to him. The jury loves her right now.

    "The jury hates Russell"

    by big jim

Would have been beneficial to her, in the eyes of the jury, to have blindsided Russell last night with the idol. Vote Russell, then give the idol to Rupert. Of course, that would have required Colby & Rupert also voting Russell. Rupert, as we know, can't be trusted with the simplest of strategies, and going along with a new plan would have been too much of an effort for Colby.Speaking of Colby, after last night I really do think he's simply on vacation. He wants on the Jury. He wants to be there, be in the game and on TV, but he wants a bed and the food (the food they get at Ponderosa does look great) and just kick back and relax at a tropical island resort. I'm sure every time the Jury walks in he looks at Coach and thinks "why couldn't that have been me".

    Russsell will stay.

    by mapman

At this point you may as well have Russell with you at the finals because that will ensure you win. I can't see how Russell could come up with any kind of speech that would cause the jurors to vote for him. He has a great strategy for getting far in the game but that same strategy will also win him second place at best.
After Amanda left I have started to root for Sandra or Parv. Both of these players have played great games and I give them extra points for making Russell scramble. I hope the girls keep needling him and that his temper gets the best of him.
Colby is a big disappointment. In Probst's blog a few weeks ago he was talking about how he liked how Colby handled the situation between Amanda and Danielle. It sounded like they were grooming him to be the new host once Probst retires. After Colby's dismal performance this season I don't think he deserves the job now.

    Unfortunately SPOILERS

    by optimus122

I think Sandra will probably win it all especially if the final 3 is the same as the list and it will be. I don't see Russell or Parv getting many votes. Sandra will be the 1st 2 time winner and she can look in the mirror and say she is the best player to ever have played the game. Unbelievable as it is. To me, she is just a hanger on but clearly she does a lot more then the viewers are allowed to see. And thats the whole trick of the show. I am sure there are more then a thousand times that Russell kisses ass after saying something mean but they don't show it so he can be portrayed as some big brut who has balls of steel. Its all in the editing.
